Makes Sense... Sony To Help TERMINATOR Take Over The World!!

Published at:  Feb 25, 2008 10:37:42 PM CST

Merrick here...

We've known for a while now that Warner Bros. would be releasing TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS here in the States, but until now we've heard nothing about the project's distribution across the rest of the world.

Per Variety, the film has been set for a May 22, 2009 release in the U.S. This will open it against NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM II.

Now comes word that McGINATOR will be released overseas by Sony.

The deal inked with the film's producers, Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson of the Halcyon Co., hands Sony's worldwide acquisitions group arm all foreign distribution rights except for Korea and some Middle East countries. There are no plans to sell off any of those foreign rights to third-party distributors, a SPWAG spokesman said.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.

It's late and I'm tired, so maybe I'm missing something. Is this implying the film won't be seen in Korea and parts of the Middle East?

  • They could've either already sold those rights to local distributers in those territories (not likely, it would say so), or they are keeping those rights themselves for distribution in those countries. The company may already have good connections and good terms there with which to distribute.

Lena Heady is perfect for the role. Good mix of tough but vulnerable and burdened with the load she must bear. A good mix of the vunerabilty and softness Linda Hamilton showed in the first one, with the one-note anger and venom she showed in the sequel. Heady is way way better.

    by lonegun

It would be all too easy for most actors to descend into camp with this kind of role, but Headey pulls it off with class. The memory of Linda Hamilton as Sarah doesn't get in the way, because Headey makes the part her own, while keeping all the best aspects of the character as it was originally played. She's tough, maternal, and unconsciously sexy.

Hey i love the tv series...ive heard they are cancelling it but it wouldn't make sense with the movie coming out next May. Even if it had shit ratings they'd certainly make a few more season and take a loss just because of the publicity it will generate for the movie. Makes sense.

One thing i don't like though...the future episode-we are seeing too much that should have been in the movie.

As i understand it the movie will deal with the orgins of the "plastic terminators" ie the orginal terminators yet in the series weve jumped forward too many years they are already in existence, we see kyle and his brother and john and were seeing (possibly) how they built that whole time travel machine.

Also Bale won't be in it much

is soooo f'ing bad it makes my head spin. To get a real good example of it's awfulness please just watch the scene from tonights episode where they tried to recreate sarah's interview scene from T2...awful awful awful. the show's ratings have been declining steady since the premiere and yes it has been canceled. As for the new movies they will do what most of us have already done and pretend as if this show and T3 never really happened. i am usually the guy defending every ones own opinion. it's all subjective. but not this, this is childhood raping bullshit.

    by alex mack

Lena is just a far better actress in emotion and range. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trashing Linda Hamilton's work on the first two films. But, let's face it, some people just are better doing things than others. Just imagine what James Cameron could do if he directed Lena Headey in a terminator film. But, Lena being better than Linda is just my opinion, and it's not wrong on either side who you like better. Afterall, they're both good actresses. Btw...Summer Glau is hotter than both of them put together! My Opinion of course.

And what makes one immature just because they believe everybody deserves to have their own opinion and nobody is really wrong for their own opinion? As much as I like it, they should never should have even started a TV show if they knew they were making a movie. Forgetting Sarah Conner

    by greyspecter

I think everybody overlooks Hamilton's mediocre performance due to the amazing concept of the first, and the brilliant execution of the second. She was a one-note horror heroine in the first, the typical battered woman stalked by the relentless killer who relies on someone else, makes bonehead errors, and somehow eeks by because it's a movie. The second, far superior film she was better, much more of a female action hero than the Milas, Umas, and Lus of today, and even showed some range as she broke down after trying to kill Dyson. Still, she had no subtlety in the role, though to be fair there wasn't much time or emphasis placed on it. It wasn't a character study, it was an action thriller. The TV show has benefited from being able to develop the character interactions more than the movie; obviously, with 20 hours of screen time v. 2.5 it's necessary. So this might be as much format-related as actress-related, but Headey has more subtlety and complexity in her feelings toward John, in being a protector in the most literal sense for her child as well as the future, and yet still being a woman with all the facets that spring from that. So yeah, I'm giving Headey the nod. Among other things.

    Lena Headey

    by strabo

Headey has done an excellent job on SCC. She's really taken over the role of Sarah Connor. At this point, she's actually played the character longer than Hamilton has. While I agree that the asylum flashbacks on last night's episode were very poor I think that's probably because Headey was trying to emulate Hamilton's acting from T2. I'm sure she would have done a better job had she not felt constrained by trying to copy someone else's performance. Also, one thing people don't seem to have picked up on yet. The music Cameron was dancing to at the end of last night's episode was the same music that was playing in the basement where they tortured Derek (dumb name...who names their children Derek anymore?). I haven't been able to place the music. I'm almost certain it's Chopin, but I've never felt particularly attracted to Romantic Solo Piano pieces, so I can't tell definitively. The implication behind the choice of music, Derek's look of revulsion (Brian Austin Green is the worst actor on the show...sigh), and the fact that he recognized her in the bunker in the future flashforwards all indicate that she, or an identical model, was present when he was tortured. This is going to feed into the Derek/Cameron fight they're building up to and the possible Cameron-gone-rogue story. I would hope they'd save that for the end of the series though a few seasons down the line. Sadly, it doesn't look like we'll get the opportunity to see this show beyond the next couple of weeks. Fox certainly doesn't have the patience to let it build an audience. If/When this gets canned, I'm not sure which I'll be more disappointed about: SCC or Journeyman. Nah, Journeyman is definitely the better show.

Question: is "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" the actual title of the next film? Because that's a verbose and bloated banner that instantly makes me wary. How about "Terminator 4"? That's a nice, non-cloying summation of the film, right? I say use it.

    Linda Hamilton

    by thelastcleric

Plot contrivances and muddled time travel nonsense aside, the SCC is a decent show but I’m genuinely amazed that people think Heady is the better Sarah Conner. Hamilton’s physical transformation from T1 to T2 alone was something pretty amazing while Heady is your typical waif. When Hamilton beat the piss out of the guards in T2 using legitimately sound hand-to-hand tactics I completely bought it. By contrast I roll my eyes every time Heady dishes out some kung-fu and knocks out 200lb men with a couple of hits. Hamilton was simply hardcore; she didn’t have to act tough because she played a character that was constantly on the edge of desperation and survival. Heady looks like a model trying to act tough and not doing a particularly good job of it.

    by dmatheny

Terminator was amazing, T2 is in the top five greatest movie of all time. T3 was the shittiest movie I've ever seen in my whole life and now they're making a 4th one! What a bunch of bastards. Oh, and the show is shit.

SCC writers head and shoulders above any new movie

    by murdermostfowl

They have done a great job wisely avoiding tying themselves too tight to the movies, but respecting the continuity when appropriate. It sometimes teeters on the silly, but all of the stories have been solid so far, never feeling like any material was just for show.

Hats off to them for pulling off one of the few movie->TV series translations that actually works. That's a *very* short list of successes
MASH, Stargate, Alien nation I suppose was a reasonable success.

I can't help but think that this series would have never gotten a chance if there wasn't the writers strike.

    oh and Headey versus Hamilton

    by murdermostfowl

Of course Heady can't be Hamilton, but I respect what they've done with all of the reoccurring roles... I'm certain they could have gotten Earl Boen to reprise his role as Dr. Silberman, but they didn't and I think that was a really smart move. Keep their own vision pure.

What really makes the show for me (other than the solid writing.. not oscar winning, but solid ) , is the casting and the appropriate use of special effects. The casting of John Conner is dead on. This is who Conner should have been in T3. Having Summer Glau be the "good" terminator was shear brilliance. ( Perhaps I should channel Harry here and add unnecessary superlatives, copious amounts of exclamation marks ;)

And don't get too distracted by the psyche ward video. No matter what it's not going to look "right". That was an extremely power performance Hamilton did and you'll remember it that way no matter how you see it done again. It could be frame for fram accurate wth the same intonation and you would still reject it becuase it *isn't* the same performance. So I think the show went the right direction here and went their own way. Notice the hospital itself was similar, but just different enough that it was its own work. Did that bother you too? Meh...

Some lame writing is fucking up SCC

    by performingmonkey

Jesus Christ when you watch that show it makes you REALLY respect the quality writing on something like Lost. People always drone on about the Lost writers not knowing where they're going, what they're doing etc. but at least they can write a fucking episode without you wanting to smash the screen. Summer Glau is EXCELLENT is Cameron.

    SCC terminated?

    by stalkeye

That's news to me as it has gotten plenty of praise from critics. It's ok but could be better had it went straight to HBO or Showtime meaning more gratuitous violence and more Lena Headey assshots.Terminuder, bring it on!!

I loved 3 but am I the only one who thinks that the Terminator is going the way of star trek enterprise. The only thing good about the show is Summer Glau's Tits.

Only local companies can distribute movies in Korea and parts of the Mid East.

Sony can't distribute it. Hence why they say they're not.

    by mr. gunderson

about this. After doubting the Sarah Connor Chronicles and being proven wrong, I'm gonna hope this will continue in a different but quality vein. We'll never get James Cameron quality but we can hope McG and co. do the universe he created justice.

The Whole Give Me Heady or Hamilton Debate..

    by rockyg

As much as I love this show...i think Heady kind of sucks. I have trouble not getting annoyed when I see her. Her acting sucks I think, and her hair...my god..HER HAIR....What is up with that disasterous do. Plus I was turned off by her as Connor immediately in the beginning where she was running around in a freakin tennis skirt or whatever..Dream or not, that was ridiculous..LOVE THE SHOW though, regardless of Heady..I still try to just look at it as a continuation to my favorite story of all time. So I'll just have to get used to her....and her hair.

Why Films won't be seen in certain Countries

    by cassie4486

I work for a Fortune 500 company & our company cannot trade with the same countries. This is why:

It's the listing of the U.S. Department of State list of state sponsors of terrorism & the U.S. will no do business with them.

    Here's a few county listings:

    Cuba (Embargoed)
    Iran (Embargoed)
    North Korea
    Sudan (Embargoed)
    Syria

China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, Iraq, Libya, UAR.
Business in these countries carries increased proliferation.
