Oh God... The Signal's real!

Published at:  Feb 25, 2008 6:00:46 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. THE SIGNAL, a small horror flick I love, came out over the weekend. It's not doing all that well and I wondered why... now I think I know...

The film is about a mysterious signal that goes out over all televisions. This signal drives anybody who sees it crazy... but in odd ways. What's good about the movie is that these people go insane in their own head, but they retain themselves a bit. It's not like they turn into zombies like in Stephen King's CELL or something like that.

Magnolia picked it up when it had a terrific premiere screening at Sundance and then held it for a long time... They released it on something like 200 screens and I don't know how it did in real numbers, but no one's really reporting it, so I don't think it did very well. Now I read this news story at MSNBC.

The story is about a man who watched the movie and decided to stab 2 people and run out. So, that's why we have no numbers. It's all evidence now that The Signal drives its audience mad!

This is one of those crazy "no shit? That wasn't a publicity stunt?" type stories. I can't believe it happened... I don't believe the movie actually turned this dude crazy (I've seen it twice on the big screen and it didn't make me kill anybody... in the theater, at least), but it makes for an interesting read.

Click here to read the whole thing!

If the flick is playing near you, give it a shot. I guarantee a good lot of you reading this that pass it up now will wish you saw it on its original release when it is finally discovered on DVD by the hardcores in the near future. It's a blast... just make sure to observe those around you and keep an eye out for sharp instruments.

Quint, forgive me, but since I saw this movie Friday night, I have not been able to stop thinking about how absolutely fucking dreadful it was. The first transmission was near-brilliant, true. But the last two transmissions drove me crazy and not in a good way. What I don't understand is who thought it would be a good idea to turn The Signal into a black comedy halfway through, and not only that, but a brutally unfunny social commentary. It was so incredibly disappointing because it set up its characters so well in that first act and I liked how the line between sane and crazy wasn't especially obvious, but the hallucinations and ironic, pithy dialogue, especially from 'Jim Parsons' had my friends and I looking at each other and rolling our eyes. It was opening night and it was the only theater the film is playing at in Hollywood and there were, no joke, 7 people there. I also think it's a little irresponsible to use this platform to link to an article about a truly scary, tragic incident hoping it will encourage people to go see the film. Look, it drove this guy literally crazy, you gotta see this shit for yourself! Having written several papers about school shootings and other sprees of violence influenced by films like Natural Born Killers and The Basketball Diaries, I feel comfortable in saying that this guy who stabbed these people was obviously crazy before he saw the movie and the movie played no part in affecting his decisions. He could've been watching Definitely, Maybe and he still would've stabbed those people. Obviously he had been planning something if he was carrying a weapon or other sharp instrument. I know a lot of people worked on The Signal and aside from me hating the shit out of it, yeah, sure, it sucks that no one is seeing it, but using that incident to encourage people to go see it is I dunno... it just made me uncomfortable. This isn't an attack on you for deciding to post something like this, because as journalists, it's our job to report the news and this is story is certainly relevant. And it's not an attack on the movie because my feelings about the film would be the same regardless of whether or not this incident ever happened. What prompted me to write this was that last graf, like, you'll wish you saw it in theaters now that this terrible thing happened. I guess I'm just trying to start a dialogue here about life imitating art and vice versa, and also a genuine movie debate about the pros and cons of The Signal. Maybe part of me not liking it was that I feel the film was wildly misrepresented by the trailer which surely could've influenced my attitudes about it, in that I paid for something other than what I got.

    by mazzer

but it's no different on RottenTomatoes. The critics seem to be split on this one, and the "top" critics just edge into the fresh category. So the wider opinion doesn't exactly say that it's a stinker. But still, it doesn't sound very original to me.

    Saw this over the weekend...

    by jonah echo

I think it's safe to say this movie didnt drive that guy crazy. At one of the theaters in our area(in Baltimore county) a few years ago, a guy shot someone during a screening of X-Men. He had been planning it, not with a specific person, just a person. Some of these theaters have terrible security and the reality is I've been to theaters where clearly mentally impaired and possible homeless people have gotten into theaters. Typically, they find their way to theaters that are sparsely populated as Im sure the Signal theater probably was. I saw it on Saturday and there were four others besides myself and a friend there. I recall going to see American Werewolf in Paris (one could make the case I was the mental ill one) and there being only 2 or 3 people there, and one of them was a guy who kept screaming at himself and waving around some sort of object and eventually took off his pants. The theater chain itself was small and understaffed, and most of us were sitting close enough to the guy we werent sure what standing up and attempting to leave would do. Eventually I had people come in and remove him, but it wasnt particularly pretty. Nothing like two teen ushers out of their league telling some crazy-eyed guy to "put on your f**ing pants, right now".

As for The Signal, I can understand Quint's trying to push it. It really is a great horror movie, and Im pretty critical of the genre. I didnt even want to particularly see the film, but it's intense, intelligent, more than a little funny, seriously disturbing and actually original even though the premise makes it sound like that is the last thing it is. Im sure if this ever finds it audience, it will be a cult classic. And just because people arent seeing it doesnt mean it sucks(which seems like mira-jeff's point). I seem to recall another febuary release in 98 that all of 5 people saw. It was called Dark City and it rocked. Seriously, if you are a horror fan and this is playing nearby, see it. Don't get too hyped up. Just check it out. I think you will be more then pleasantly surprised.

    what scares me about this

    by kloipy

is that I hope this doesn't bring around another wave of 'we need to censor more horror because it is causing violent acts' bullshit and bring about yet another wave of PG-13 shitty horror movies because people look for an excuse to push their agenda on film because it makes them feel better. As i have said before I am a Christian, but I also believe a lot of christians are INO and just think that anything they don't like is "evil". I read some reviews on some christian movie review site and they don't like anything for any reason unless it's about Jesus. And they go particularly hard against horror even though they just can't understand the genre. I just really don't want to go back to the post-columbine crap we had to deal with after that.

Yea, in some ways this isnt gonna do the movie any favors..

    by jonah echo

Now people are expecting some sort of gonzo experience, but it really isnt. It is violent, but honestly it's relatively restrained. It also has something to say regarding violence and human interaction. Kloipy, as a christian who saw the film, I know where you are coming from regarding people complaining. I can understand their attacking certain films, but I think it's a waste of energy and time that could be focused on showing love and understaning. The main problem is they don't ever watch these things they just make blanket judgements. It's so bad I was recently reccomending the spiderwick chronicles to someone and they wanted to know if there was "evil magic" in it. Unless cgi is evil magic. There is actually some thoughtful stuff going on with The Signal, and it would be worth the discussion even for someone who thought it was valueless trash.

I know my friend. A lot of Christians seem to hate more than they love. It's like they don't understand their own religion. What makes me wonder is if they are so hateful towards movies like this then how do they let their children read the Bible? It has murder, incest, rape, and more in it's pages. And again I am a Christian but I just don't understand a lot of what it's followers do. The message of God is beautiful, but it gets miscontrued all the time

yes the country's top critics are decidedly mixed on The Signal, but I'm glad that me hating the movie has inspired some of you to go see it, just don't be mad at me when I say I told you so... there are other dissenting opinions in the talkback of Capone's review... listen, to each his own. i consider myself a big horror fan but my taste is pretty much the opposite of Harry and Quint's (i.e. on Leslie Vernon). I'd love to hear Mori weigh in on The Signal. It's a divisive film and there are moments of genius, but it's way too all over the place and I GUARANTEE it would've been a better film if there had been one singular vision, rather than three different directors that really impede the flow of the movie on the whole... you'll see.

With the infinite possibilities the universe holds it's a bit hard to take the idea of a God seriously. to subscribe to the idea of a God, we must also believe that we are special or at least capable of some greatness. But that cannot be since we can drop dead at any moment. To think of an afterlife is to feel secure and comforted; to soften the blow of mortality. I don't think it's a coincidence that we're the most self-conscious beings on this planet and we believe in something that makes dying acceptable. Cmon, Let's think practically. The only truth we know is the perceptual world. Everything else is hear-say. It's not that I don't respect your beliefs. I do. I admire your lack of cynicism. It's just, why would God place us in this existence if only to test us?

Im not sure what your point is, but I wasnt being anti-homeless person. My point is that sometimes the people are in the theater because they are just trying to get somewhere, stay warm or hang out, whatever. I'm saying clearly a theater is the wrong place to do that. Most people, homeless or otherwise don't do that. Usually when it happens, there is something else wrong. That's not to say all homeless people are mentally ill, far from it. My point is not that mildly deranged people are paying for tickets and getting in. The dude without the pants, it was discovered, hadnt paid and had just wandered past the ushers. Surprise.

And able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. We just didn't see eye to eye on The Signal. Not the end of the world. For what it is, The Signal's not bad. To its credit, it doesn't look or feel homemmade or low budget. But always be wary of sentences that start, for what it is, because my problem with The Signal is that it could've been so much more if the filmmakers had stuck to their guns and not gone the Shaun of the Dead route. Not everyone can pull off tongue-in-cheek. After a half-hour I thought the film was apocalyptic like 28 Days Later, and then it became a silly sitcom of violence and imagined events.

I saw this film a few weeks back and really dug it. The directors were there afterwards for a Q&A and some dude asked them about how they made the signal. They said something about how they did research on different video and sound frequencies and also ppsychotron resonance. It may b perfectly plausible to think they may have gone to far and it is actually affecting people

How many horror films have been released where nothing out of the ordinary happens?I'm just glad it didn't happen at a theatre showing DEFINITELY, MAYBE. I think I'll have to wait until DVD on this one, because there ain't no way on God's greens they'll be playing it here in theatres if it's such a limited run. Speaking of God (religion, particularly), I don't think that Christians are unique in their pre-occupation of focusing their energy on hate (of course, I would never say all religious people, but, let's face it, they exist.).

and regarding "HOLLYWOOD MADE ME DO IT!!!!"

    by lost jarv

this saggy old excuse has been used thousands of times very, very unconvincingly-Just look at the wide variety of films that these despicable lowlifes try to blame: (all of these have been "linked" to crimes at some point) A Clockwork Orange, Natural Born Killers, Child's Play 3, Straw Dogs, Reservoir Dogs, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Old BoyWhat do these films have in common? nothing, not a damn thing. It is fatuous tripe to try to suggest that a film may in some way be responsible for depressing violent actions, when people try it they may as well be saying "a big boy did it and ran away" as what they are actually attempting to do is to blame Hollywood/ media for their actions (to quote noted sage Eric Cartman "These movies have warped my fragile little mind")and thereby somehow divert/ dilute blame. There are two things I'm mildly curious about. Firstly, if it had happened on London Underground and the guy flat out said "The tube drove me to do it" would the Right Wing papers be calling for a ban? and secondly, why are none of the films ever Torture Porn? Basically, all I am saying is that people have been treating each other like shit and murdering each other for millenia but cinema comes along in the 20th century so it must be the fault of cinema. Horseshit. People are evil, and the impetus for vicious actions come from inside. Society did not make you do it, the media did not make you do it- you did it because you have a head full of bad wiring.

What I got at the last paragraph of Quint's wasn't "Bet you guys wish you'd saw it before that guy knifed some people!" but that he thinks the film will do better on DVD and people will kick themselves for not seeing it at the cinema. I think the last bit was just a push for the film rather than relating to the stabbing.

I know that there are a lot of people who don't believe in God. I was one of them for a long time. I studied a bunch of different religions and found a lot of good in them, but it came down to what I found in the Bible to be what my soul was drawn to. The universe is so vast and our understanding is just that. Our understanding, doesn't make it concrete or true. I've never seen another galaxy but I believe it is there. I'm not saying Christianity is right for everyone but it is for me. I don't pray because I am only afraid of God's wrath, I pray to get closer to Him and to find an understanding of life as best I can be given. I have had too many miracles in my life that aren't just coincidence. For me, life is just too complex and wonderful that I can't believe it just came together by itself. I don't have the answer, but I have felt the presence of something much greater than I am and I just feel in my heart that it is true. But like I said to each his own. I think Christians have a stigma because of the followers not the message. It's all about, as Jesus taught, acceptance of everyone, because none of us are greater than anyone else

Were you at the horsehead nebula to take a picture of it? I wasn't, but that doesn't mean just because I wasn't doesn't mean I don't believe it is. I've never been to Saturn but I know it's there. Oh, boy... Here comes the religeous banter!

    by rakafraker

I had to come back and say: I hope that you religeonists are happy, well-adjusted people that are confident and believe in your god because you have studied theology thoroughly and chose to live by the 'guidelines' presented by the Christian 'commandments' because they suit your personal lifestyle. I also hope that you are the kind of people that keep that info to yourself and don't wish to 'spread the word' by soliciting everyone you communicate with. (It is to those that I am just giving their rant right back. To all others, my apologies.) I, obviously, have a big problem with religeon. Not spirituality (transcendant thought and actions), mind you. The righteous, bigot-hiding-behind-God, ignorant, socially-inept whiners who just can't believe in themselves and need a crutch that, in their perception, is bigger than any person, so they can feel good about themselves. I have my own reasons for believeing what I do, too. I've studied enough of theology to know that I don't need it. I know that I do more good for the world than just about every religeous zealot I've ever met. I know that gods are more illusionary than planets and stars (I used to work at an obsevatory as a youth). I know that the laws of science are more sensible than the ramblings of ancient texts (and are also prone to revisions when actual revelations are made and proofs are, well, proven. Unlike prophetic fiction that is taken de facto, and still has to be interpreted. I want to learn this 'God math' to quantitatively prove that these gods exist and we all exist because of them. Like the letter of the law, the burden of proof is for you to prove it, not for me to disprove it.). And, as far as I know, no wars have been fought because of differeing scientific views (though more than a few have died from believeing in science, instead of the religeon-of-the-day.). I believe in showing my views by example (like helping where I can, being kind, understanding, and compassionate for others regardless of race, religeon, or style)I'm not saying that people like Jesus and Mohammed, etc. didn't exist. I'm sure that they did, and made an impact on the people of their time because they had the cajones to educate people on the pros of treating others with respect and dignity and cons of hurting others. Unfortunately, the message seems to have evaporated and replaced with eliteism.Again, I apologize to those that have the sense to use reason and fact to make the decisions for their own lives, and spare us from illogical drivel. Hey, I like to read, but I don't take any literature that makes some sense and worship it like it is the last word (including science texts), and then kill those that don't believe like I do. Thank you for your time. Hijack fin.

I agree Fullerton didn't look like a bad place where shit like that goes down, my band has played in the area a couple times. But if anything this is proof that shit like this can happen anytime, anywhere. One time I was at Arclight in Hollywood watching a 21+ showing of Beerfest and this dude walks in double fisting a couple cocktails. He looked like he got the party started about 32 hours prior and was probably homeless. First thing he does is chug one glass and says "FUCK THIS SHIT!!" to the screen. Then he throws up all over his lap and his seat. This unfortunate turn of events prompts him to, no shit, pull his pants down and jerk off (while crying). Nobody came in to fucking stop this guy, pretty much everyone who was there just moved as far back in the theater as they could be from this asshole, or simply left. I mean, truth be told, if I worked at the Arclight, I wouldn't want to fucking go near some random, drunk, half naked homeless guy who's beating off and crying while covered in vomit. I don't give a shit how many people are bothered by it. Fuck it, I'd just quit my job and go far, far away from that place. I still have trouble going into the 21 and over screen there.

message to those who think this is all there is

    by teh ran

It's a shitty existance when someone you love passes away. I lost my dad last year and it's painful to have the conflict of wanting to talk to him but understanding the futility because he's no longer there and he hasn't moved on to another plane of existance or afterlife. I wasn't brought up to believe in God or religion but I know one thing for sure, I am envious of those people who do because they have something I don't and that's their own innner comfort that when the worst happens they have someone to talk to and faith that there is something after this life. I can't force myself to have faith and I certainly wouldn't criticise or belittle someone who has. The paradox is that I have faith in mankind's ability to evolve and create. I've seen faraway planets through my telescope and witnessed natural occurances that leave you in awe, solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, meteor showers etc. But for some, unknown reason I haven't enough faith within me to believe in God or an afterlife. Good luck to all you people with religious and spiritual beliefs I'm sure you'll have the last laugh.
