A hobbit to play with a Wolverine? What's this world come to?

Published at:  Feb 22, 2008 10:56:19 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The mutants keep adding up for WOLVERINE. Looks like they're going whole-hog on this one.

The newest recruits are Dominic Monaghan and Daniel Henney. According to Variety, Henney will play an agent (AGENT ZERO, no less) from the Weapon X program that is an expert tracker and lethal marksman and Monaghan will play a mysterious mutant from Wolvie's past that can manipulate electricity and energy.

Gossip blog JustJared broke Monaghan yesterday, but they claim he'll be playing Beak/Blackwing, who wouldn't have control of electricity if I remember my minor Marvel characters correctly.

Sounds almost like Monaghan's playing Shocker or Electro to me if the Variety article has the right information, but again... I don't think Shocker or Elecgtro are tied specifically to Wolverine. I always remembered them as being more in Spider-Man's world. Anyone more familiar with the Marvelverse want to bring up other suggestions?

    by reel american hero

Since they're going with the current version of the Weapon X program and all I wonder if they'll have Malcolm Colcord a.k.a. nameless guard who Wolvie savagely mangles his face in his escape from the program and who later runs the show. I'm still having a hard time buying Liev Schrieber as Sabretooth though. Way more talented then Tyler Mane, but Sabretooth was always supposed to be a lot bigger then Schrieber though.

Monaghan is Beak AKA Barnell Bohusk

    by mr writer

Beak is a relatively new character created a few years ago by Grant Morrison for New X-Men. He doesn't really have anything to do with Wolverine or Weapon X, so I think he's been chosen to feature because visually Beak would look amazing if done right. He's a basically a man crossed with a bird and if the effects are good enough it could look really cool. From what I gather his role in the movie is pretty brief. He's a mutant on the Victor Creed's death list and gets hunted down by Sabretooth early in the movie. Dominic Monaghan should be perfect for the role.

As for Daniel Henney I don't know much about him, but it makes sense to have Agent Zero/Maverick in the movie since he was a member of Team X with Logan, Creed, and Wraith. Obviously Stryker is the boss of Team X in movie continuity and Deadpool is another subject of Weapon X. Where Gambit fits in I've don't have a clue. His only link to Wolverine continuity is his long standing association with Sabretooth.

So far the casting is very interesting. The only characters I'm concerned about is Gambit and the Blob (who hopefully will just have a 30-second appearance. And the only actor I'm worried about is Lynn Collins as she looks nothing like a Blackfoot Indian. But overall its looking good and I can't wait to see Liev Schrieber's take on Sabretooth. I just hope all these cameo/appearances are kept to an minimum onscreen so Wolverine has the chance to star.

Liev Schreiber is 6"2, Sabretooth is 6"6

    by mr writer

I think Liev Schreiber could be a fantastic Sabretooth. He's tall enough without being a giant (and if shot right could look much bigger than 6"2) and we know the guy could act. Tyler Mane short of looked the part (although not entirely) but there was none of Sabretooth's personality. He's the sick and twisted version of Logan. He's everything Logan fights not to be. And he's far more mindless. He's a devious, blackly funny, killing machine. I've seen a couple of shots of Schreiber on set with great big hairy sideburns so I assume they're giving him a blonde hair piece, fangs, claws, and maybe CGI white eyes to look like Creed. Again if the FX are on the money he could look really cool.

I wonder if there will be any mention in the movie at all of the history of the Weapon X program, i.e. it's actually a roman numeral 10, not an X, as in the 10th attempt at recreating the super soldier Weapon I, a.k.a. Captain America

All these cameos could work if...

    by mr writer

...there is a reason for them being present in the story. If Beak is on the list of mutants Sabretooth is killing then that's cool. Maybe Gambit is on the list too, but survives with Wolverine's help. Maybe Blob is on the list too or maybe Wolverine just meets him in the mutant bar scene I've heard about.

And the others (Deadpool, Agent Zero, Wraith, and Stryker) are all Weapon X so that's cool. While Silverfox is obviously Wolverine's love interest.

    So it could work.

    Weapon 10

    by mr writer

I don't know how much of Grant Morrison's Weapon Plus storyline is acknowledged as canon by Marvel. Its a strange situation, but almost half of everything Morrison did on X Men seems to have taken place in a kind of alternate reality. i.e Magneto is Xorn, Magneto is dead, Magneto is alive again confusion.

I think Weapon Plus is probably a bit too complex for Wolverine's first movie. There is no need to tinker with the classic Weapon X storyline by Barry Windsor Smith (I'd love to see that on the big screen) and its relatively simple to follow compared to Morrison's uber complex plot. Mind you a throwaway mention of Captain America could be really cool even if its just for fans.

Apparently in the second half of the script (the first draft) Wolverine is trying to track down Stryker and Creed and does a bit of detective work, which includes hunting down the likes of John Wraith for info. In one scene, he goes into an underground bar/nightclub (think Blade) which is just for mutants. It's meant to be pretty colourful place full of weird and wonderful mutations. I can't see where Blob would fit into the movie so maybe he gets into a barroom brawl with Wolverine?

Monaghan is playing Beak (whose real name is Barnell), a really ugly looking mutant bird guy. Variety must've gotten their info mixed up, because the OTHER dude, Henney, is the one whose character (Maverick aka Agent Zero) can manipulate (kinetic) energy, in addition to being an expert marksman. He was a part of the same program that manipulated Wolverine to give him his adamantium skeleton, and took away his memories.

Geeks have the comics and, to a lesser extent, cartoons to cream over. This is a hollywood movie made for 15 year olds and 40 year olds to spend 12 bucks to go see on a saturday night. Bog it down with the nuance of geek-may-care only characters and motivation and it would have never been green lit.

but he is a wirey, mousy-looking guy. When looking at him I could never consider him to be an imposing, frightening, or savage villain. He is more suited to the quiet, 'seems friendly on the outside but there are evil motivations within' kind of villain. He's much more suited to a Bond villain, or the intellectual type supervillain, but is not suited for something like Sabertooth.

if they really do that character, and not just some random joining of different character's names and powers (Kid Omega, anyone?), that would be pretty awesome if it's present time and he's dealing with Scott's death. Even stretching my imagination further, it could be a link in the story to eventually bring back Cyclops for a later movie. Won't happen, though.

That's not particularly fair... A better comparison would be if they made a spin-off movie all about Rick O'Connell.
The Scorpion King took a character that was in the movie for a total of five minutes and tried to make a story about it. There WAS no story to be made... (and it even contradicted Mummy Returns, which makes it even worse).

that's bangin' Kate from Lost. Cause if it is I owe him a cockpunch. But, seriously, is he the "second breakfast" secondary hobbit or that dude and secondary hobbit who was so irritating on Lost?

    Blackwing does have some ties

    by kafka07

to Wolverine, not significantly, but they're there. Blackwing does not have the ability to manipulate energy/electricity. He's a mutant and he can fly, born with wings if I remember right. Kind of an ugly version of Angel.

    by reel american hero

Isn't Cyclop's brother's code name Havok, and not the correct spelling of the word? And yes that would be cool if they got him in the franchise, though I'd prefer seeing him in his own X-Factor franchise from the Peter David version of the team. That flick I could forgive an undertone of comedy in. That along with the Justice League of the 1980's were two of the funniest superhero team books I've ever read.

Sounds really close to the minor character Bolt, who was also known as the second Maverick when the original took the Agent Zero identity. Would make sense. Here's the wiki entry on Bolt

Oh yeah, Wolverambo or something. Wolveringer? Wolverump? I forget. Doesn't matter though, cos I'm super excited about that new Wraith movie. That guy from the Black Eyed Peas is sure to kick ass. With his track record. How could that possibly go wrong.

JAVIER BARDEM SHOULD PLAY CONAN THE BARBARIAN

    by -888

    I'm just sayin'.

I know someone else on AICN already pointed this out, but it's a great idea.

He's about to win an Oscar, so maybe he's ready to grab a paycheck franchise.

He'd be a surefire draw for attaching a decent director to the project.

STUDIO TAKE NOTE: Iconic Hero+Great Actor(s)+Sharp Director=$$$. It's simple math. See new Batman franchise, X-Men 1&2, Spider-Man, new Bond movies, etc. for real-world examples of this working. This math works.

Do the new holders of the Conan property have the $ to apply this formula and earn $$$? Let's hope so. It'd be a great movie.

No joke: give him a few 'roids and a trainer and BARDEM IS CONAN. Get to it!

    Electrical mutant = BOLT

    by jinx

Agent Zero = Maverick of the Weapon X project, BOLT = Maverick's electrical power having younger sidekick with the Legacy Virus. BOLT debuted in an issue of X-men Unlimted #8 and was briefly a member of the New Warriors. Bolt eventually took on the mantle of Maverick when the original became AGENT ZERO

I say bring in Peter Dinklage as Puck. He's athletic, an amazing actor, and how often do you get to cast the smaller folks? Achondroplasia is probably what Puck had, anyways. I want a hard drinking dwarf who gets all the ladies!

    Beak...

    by wolfman nards

Was a pretty "useless" mutant but that's what his story was about... being a freakish, weak mutant and finding his purpose. I think he eventually married Angel and was "cured" of his mutant abilities, making him a normal looking human. As a mutant though, he was a half bird/half man with a mohawk and brittle bones. I don't even think he could really fly. It seems like he's a character that's going to need some explaination so I don't think he'll just be a cameo. I could be wrong though.

    by milvis

While the character I think he will play doesn't have anything to do with Wolverine's past in the comics, who says this has to be canon.

Former Gen-Xer, was in Weapon X, British (I believe)

The mutant in question.....it's got to be CHAMBER!

His powers will look so badass in a movie.

    Maverick

    by msbelang

Everyone is forgetting about maverick, an energy-manipulating mutant mercenary who definitely has a past with logan... although a minor, b-list character in the x-men universe, maverick is definitely one who fits the description and has a lot bigger connection to wolverine's past than beak or electro or chamber... plus he doesn't have a bunch of weird SFX required to render him, which makes it a little more likely IMO
