BERLIN FILM FEST! Mastidon On BE KIND REWIND!

Published at:  Feb 21, 2008 5:40:01 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I’ll have my review of this up tomorrow night. For now, here’s Mastidon, who has done such great work for us from Berlin this year:

BE KIND REWIND
Written & Directed by: Michael Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow, and Sigourney Weaver
Release Dates: UK & USA - Friday
Rating: 4 1/2 Stars for Sweded movies, Rest of film 2 stars, Over-all 2 1/2 stars out of 5

Hey Guys,

Mastidon here with a movie I know you all have heard everything about already so I just want to pipe in my 2 cents with a short review. BE KIND REWIND was the official closing film of the Berlin Film Festival. Quite a surprising honor considering Martin Scorsese opened it with SHINE A LIGHT.

I must admit, I am absolutely not a fan of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, having tried to watch it 3 times and never getting through it completely. I found it boring and pathetic. And to be honest, that is how I found most of BE KIND REWIND. Maybe it's just me. Several people in the audience were laughing hysterically at most parts of the film. Maybe Germans got the weird French humor better than I ever could. I don't know. Jack Black's character is on the edge of complete insanity and so annoying that it's just not funny. I did chuckle at a couple of scenes, the most when he was at the power plant with the signs but over-all it just seemed like a time filler until the real entertainment showed up - Sweded movies.

This movie is worth seeing only for the Sweded films. You can walk out when they are over. GHOSTBUSTERS SWEDED has to be about the hardest I have ever laughed in my life. I have seen the question in the talkbacks and I can say yes, there are a few versions of the theme song in the movie - Jack Black's own and Ray Parker Juniors both make an appearance. The other Sweded films are also entertaining but nothing tops GHOSTBUSTERS. Wait until you see who gets the Sigourney Weaver role making it even that much funnier when Sigourney shows up herself as the representative from the MPAA. RUSH HOUR 2 and DRIVING MISS DAISY are also both good for laughs -- not to mention 2001!

The closing credits mentioned that you can view all of the Sweded films on the BE KIND REWIND website. I wish that was the case as they are not currently up. Maybe after it opens on Friday. If they do appear, save your cash and watch them there. If not, this one is clearly a rental. Be kind, fast-forward to the good parts.

Ciao for now,

-Mastidon

But finding "Eternal Sunshine" "pathetic" definitely makes the list.

That was supposed to say "There are few opinions in the world that invalidate everything a person says." Now you can enjoy my snark in full.

Fair enough. That is criticism I can accept. I don't know why but it just never worked for me. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood the various times I tried to watch it. Several people I know whose opinions I value think it's fabulous. Maybe I should try it a fourth time and force myself to watch it all...

I liked "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind"

    by bobo_vision

I thought it was brilliant. But I think most of that credit goes to Charlie Kaufman's script. Gondry's last film, "The Science of Sleep" was so painfully boring that I could not watch the entire movie and had to turn it off before the halfway mark. I try to watch all movies all the way through to give them fair judgment, but some aren't worth it. So I don't know...I might have to wait until DVD to check out "Be Kind Rewind".

    Bobo_Vision and Mastidon

    by dale_cooper

First of all, Bobo, you're right. I haven't seen "Be Kind" yet but on the evidence of "Eternal Sunshine" and "The Science of Sleep," Gondry seems to work better with someone writing for him. His direction was exemplary for "Eternal Sunshine" but the same style seemed cloying and overly whimsical attached to his own script. He needs a collaborator with a little more pessimism, or something.

Mastidon - my less snarky response is that "Eternal Sunshine" was a really ingenius movie that dragged out career-best performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, and actually had something new to say about love, which is the most tired topic in Hollywood this side of "cops who are new partners sometimes hate each other but then grow to like each other in a faintly homoerotic way." I don't actually think it invalidates your opinions if you didn't like it, but I do strongly urge you to revisit it & make yourself watch the whole thing. The last ten seconds of that movie are very meaningful; it's really the point of the whole thing.

    This film is groundbreaking

    by spandau belly

I've heard people say to enjoy certain movies you have to "switch your brain off", this is the first movie where you have to "switch your brain off" to even enjoy the trailer seeing as it presents you with a movie that looks like an atomic bomb level insult to intelligence.I love Goundry, especially La Science des Reves and his music videos, but I just don't think he thought this one through.

"Boring and pathetic" is not an argument.

    by grungies

It is a conclusion that has to be backed up. Mastidon failed to do so. I'm disregarding this review.
