It's very interesting there was no mention of the PS3 in that second video despite the Unreal Engine III being available for both system. Perhaps MS really are going to buy Epic?

This is the most exciting news yet outta GDC. Did anyone see the Unreal tech demo with the hundred Locust on screen? Amazing! This could mean not only more enemies on screen in the single player, but 16 player multiplayer and 4 player coop for the single player game. Maybe more who knows. The next thing and I've been saying this a long time regarding Gears of War. One of the biggest complaints towards Gears 1 was the cheapness of the Chainsaw. How you can't defend yourself from it. Well I'm speculating that the clashing Chainsaw duel seen in the teaser is hinting at Chainsaw clashing during gameplay. By hitting the melee button. You can block the chainsaw. Which begins a locked duel between you and your opponents Chainsaws. Whoever hits the B button the fastest wins the clash and thus chainsaws his opponent. If this becomes fact. Remember you heard it here first. Lastly, will we see female characters? That would be interesting. One thing that games of this nature lack. Are female characters and with more and more girls playing games like GOW, HALO and COD. I don't know, but If I was a girl i'd feel left out if I couldn't choose a female character during multiplayer or coop games. I'm glad to see Fable2 adding a female character. Where you can coop and interact with each other. We need more of that in gaming. Especially single guys hehe.
Feb. 21, 2008, 5:03 a.m. CST
You can watch that tech demo here, http://tinyurl.com/2pn9xw - Microsoft's press site also posted images of the temporary box art for Gears of War 2. We find out it comes in both Regular Edition and Limited Edition, woot! http://tinyurl.com/2jyap2

Gears fo War is the best game ever and worth buying an X box alone just for that one game, I could literally cope with only having that game to play and no others on my X box
The online play although quite random (Part of its appeal) is the best going and the community and social aspects compared to the likes off Halo (Full of kids who refuse to communicate even on team objective games)are fantastic.
If they can make it feel the same in Gears 2, but add a few extra small things in to improve it such as larger battles, Some gunship on rails sections and sort out a few issues with online i.e. Ranked matches with friends, dont make the sniper so overpowered this time, and fix if you fire a missile at someone and they survive but you blow up. Then this will trounce Halo, COD4 and the rest to take over its predecessors mantle of number 1 online game which it has only just lost to COD4, yeah thats right, magazines say different, but everyone is still playing COD4 and Gears more than Halo, its a fact.
Bring on the November violence, the rumours have been on X box live for ages, we all knew it was coming pre X mas, but its good to have it official finally.
If you have not tried it, buy an X box and get this game, you will love it. Now all we need is a decent film version.
Feb. 21, 2008, 5:17 a.m. CST
Plenty of girls play Gears online, in fact only game I know where girls do play regularly online, thers 2 sets of couples i play regularly with.
What Id like to see is
larger maps for 16 player online games a la COD4
AN XP system like COD4
4 player co-op for campaign
Some new guns, the flamethrower anyone?
Love frag tagging, but throwing frags could be more like a FPS game.
anyone else got any wich lists for this game or thinsg they should fix from the first one?

Feb. 21, 2008, 5:27 a.m. CST
The reason why there's no mention of PS3 is because a) It's an exclusive title and b)Gears actually influenced the design of the 360; it's why there's twice as much video memory and why Epic have stated time and again that Gears COULDN'T be done on PS3.

The engine is simply middleware that drives games; it's all maths. It doesn't take into consideration the little things like texturing etc.
Feb. 21, 2008, 5:39 a.m. CST
No way this would ever come to PS3 and basicaly the ain reason why there is no point in getting a PS3 over an X box aart from that it s a cheap Blue ray player
All good games on PS3 are either already on X box or coming on, but PS3 does not have Gears or Halo or Forza etc.
What reason would you get a PS3 unless you want GT4 or Formula 1 above all others and Forza is just as god as GT anyway.
Online play is better on x box, some games that are out for both are better on X box (COD4, PES2008, GTAIV when it comes out will have extra content)
A Games system such as these are built on the games, not the hardware and the games are simply better on X box...Simple
If you want a proper gaming machine get an X box, if you want a family machine, get a Wii. Have played them all

I ahve actually played with couples who were having sex while playing Gears of war, and i myself and married with children, I only play x box when the family are in bed, so fuck off with the I actually have sex with women argument, geeks dont play Gears fo war, hard people play gears of motherfucking war, geeks play the sims and final fanatasy and shit.
Some games these days are better than half the movies that come out, all we need now is a decent Indiana Jones game for the new awesome looking movie, that would kick ass, big time.
I guarantee you if they do justice to the Gears movie, then people will realise what a great concept they have there, imagine an adult rated Gears film, with chainsaw action, curb stomping and explosuive arrows to the face, this will out violence Rambo man.
Gears rocks and if you are not in on the scene you are missing out
Feb. 21, 2008, 6:11 a.m. CST
Yes but that second video was talking about new features in Unreal Engine III, not Gears of War 2 (although I'm sure many of those features will be in the game). Sony provide a copy of UE3 with every dev kit sold, and loads of titles on the PS3 use the engine. Also that video is from the Game Developers Conference which is for developers not the general public. I'm sure the PS3 programmers there would like to have known if those features will also be in the PS3 version of the engine. I just think the lack of mention of the PS3 is quite unusual given than Epic probably make just as much money licensing the game to PS3 developers.

All it is anymore are first person shooters, adventure/platform, and real time strategy. The moment they started making a ton of money the video game industry stopped being innovative.
Feb. 21, 2008, 7:31 a.m. CST
Gears is innovative, nothing else like it, its a third person game but done in an FPS kind of way, plus the use of cover has now been copied on a to of games apprently GTAIV uses almost exact same cover system and button press as Gears.
"What are these things made of...Shit!"
Feb. 21, 2008, 7:41 a.m. CST
I could swear that Gears is a third person shooter, and that there are also sports games, RPG's, fighting games, and MMORPG's as well...
Feb. 21, 2008, 7:45 a.m. CST
Too many games these days are just made with the 16 year old boy demographic in mind, every game seems to be about controling a big hulking space marine type dude as you run around some futuristic wasteland/bombed out city while shooting generic aliens/monsters with a huge gun. Whatever happened to games where you had to use lateral thinking to solve a puzzle? Why does noone make adventure games like Full Throttle or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis anymore? Don't get me wrong, I like a decent shooting game as much as anyone (Call of Duty 4 is easily the best game on any console) but enough with these generic borefests already. People always rave about Gears of War but I seriously found it so dull and repetative that I traded it in and couldn't even be bothered to complete it.

Feb. 21, 2008, 8:01 a.m. CST
COD4 is also a great game, the best FPS on any console, much better than Halo, if they could just sort out all the bugs it would be great. But Gears is still number 1 for me, just more fun, and did you go online, how can that be repetitive?
Feb. 21, 2008, 8:11 a.m. CST
Kill or be killed, reborn or die, again anda again. In the same little maps. Yawn. Its just PACMAN with better graphics...
Feb. 21, 2008, 8:16 a.m. CST
I guess I just couldn't get invested into the game because I really didn't care about what was going on, it starts off, you're handed a gun and that's it. Technically, developers these days are able to make amazingly real worlds with great graphics and physics, it's just that until they put as much effort into coming up with original character designs, environments and storylines then, as far as I'm concerned it's all a bit dull.
Feb. 21, 2008, 8:47 a.m. CST
I haven't played it personally, but people I know have and they rave like mad about the depth of its story and philosophy. Apparently the guys who made the game were inspired by Ayn Rand. I'm going to be picking it up soon and giving it a whirl.

Hardware that's dated? lol Let's see, if it doesn't have a 'cell' processer or anything titled 'emote' it's dated? A new processor doesn't necessarily mean it's better. From what I've seen so far (and I do have both) the 360 is is just as, if not more, powerful then the ps3. Pretty good for a 'dated' piece of hardware.

It’s fine to have an opinion but when that opinion is housed in nothing more substantive than a need to troll or deride other people then you pretty much have nothing to stand on. To the few vocal people claiming Gears is overrated, good luck with that. It’s a phenomenal looking and playing game, the multiplayer is excellent and the story was actually pretty decent, all things considered. If the game didn’t personally do much for you that’s certainly fine but the technical merits and overall quality of that particular title is pretty obvious. As for the people bemoaning the lack of innovation, once again I would simply point out you really have no idea what you are talking about. There are plenty of innovative games on the market: Assassin’s Creed, Shadow of the Colossus, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes, and Okami, just to name a few. Then you have a plethora of new and interesting software via XBOX Live and the PlayStation Network, including some pretty awesome remakes (Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Super Street Fighter II online both look incredible) and completely original games. If you don’t personally like the medium then why bother coming in here at all?
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:04 a.m. CST
I liked the fact that tghere was no 10 minute opening video, you just start and you find out bits of story as you go along, but its als like a small section of a larger story that they can build up in sequels and movies.
And for Underdog, I can see hat you are saying, but does that not essentially mean you just are not into playing Computer Games, whereas I and millions of others really like them, and of those that do, most people who play it think its a great game. I do know poepl who ahve an X box, a live subscription and one game...Gears. Thats all they ever play and have between 500 and 1200 Gamer points for just that game.
The new maps that were available, were not all that good, th originals are mostly still the best, save perhaps Process, Subway and Raven down.
PS3 games are rubbish and all other games compared to Gears are rubbish, you know I'm right.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:09 a.m. CST
Its a shit hot game, and one to really play on your own with the lights out and get into the story, but once you have finished it? Not much left to look at.
Gears real value is in the fact that you can still get entertainment out of it after 1000 hours of play if you wanted to?
But for those that like FPS and story, Bioshock is the game, I personally only got a loan of it, but thats because with no online you really dont need your own copy?
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:16 a.m. CST
Resistance 2. 8 player co-op with a separate storyline that compliments the single player. 60 player multiplayer. Fantastic art direction, and great gameplay in the first one. I can only expect it to get better. And, yes I have a 360, and yes I played GoW. And, no, I don't think it's a crap game. But if we're going to be honest and start spouting off bullet points, then R2 needs to be mentioned.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:20 a.m. CST
I think you may be correct, however, the PS3 streams data from the Blu-ray disc, so it overcomes that bottleneck. At least that's a work around that I've read about.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:20 a.m. CST
Although I think the 360s processors are a bit better than people give them credit for, but that's mho. As for resistance, I wasn't all that impressed with it. It was the first game I got with my PS3. The graphics weren't that great (hardly any texturing at all--get up close to a wall, and you'll see). You'd get a few instances with a lot of enemies on the screen at one time, which was great, but there weren't enough of those. there also isn't a whole lot of interactivity. Again, this is just my humble oppinion.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:26 a.m. CST
That's why a good chunk of Devil May cry was put onto the hard disk. It's unfortunate that MS wouldn't let them do the same thing on the 360 (a 360 without a hard drive is pretty pointless imho.) Blu Ray does give you more space though, which means fewer disks for games.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:34 a.m. CST
It is without a doubt the most overrated game I have ever played in my life, and the online multiplayer is garbage.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:45 a.m. CST
Is the developer support. This is an area where MS is clearly ahead. The use of Directx is just as important as the hardware. I'm sure Sony will improve this area over time, but they have a knack for going all proprietary on game makers. Development time is the biggest outlay for game companies.
Feb. 21, 2008, 9:47 a.m. CST
Unreal 3 is cross platform so, yes, those features will be available to PS3 devs too. However, GoW will be the first game released to use the new additions to the engine, (bear in mind that it's in a constant state of development), so i assume that's why they're showcasing it on 360.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:13 a.m. CST
I loved the single player campaign and would play thorugh it on the hardest setting just so i could warm up to xboxlive playing. I only got to play it onine a few times because i JUST NOW made my xbox live account. But what i did notice in GOW online is that the use of cover is VERY important, flanking people was fun and its an intense FPS. I traded mine in months back to get some new games (Bio Shock) i wish i didnt though. Its cool, i have COD4 t hold me at night....wel no, i got a girl for that one too, OH YA
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:14 a.m. CST
The data placed on the HD for DMC4 is not due to any inability to read from the BD. It was used to decrease load times of levels. Several companies have all stated that they dynamically stream textures from the BD as it gives them a huge amount of space to pull from without causing a hit on the RAM. The thing that hinders the PS3 developers is that some are working on cross platform titles. There is simply no way that a dvd9 disc, no matter how good the compression is, can give you the same amount of data as a BD. People are complaining that games are getting shorter, look at the storage space. The move to hi-def graphics causes a huge boost to texture sizes. But not just image maps, but also to lighting maps, specular maps, etc. As the models get more detailed, the assets associated with them get ballooned in size. The dvd9 simply can't hold enough info to provide hi-def imagery and longer game lengths. So the trade off is made to shorten the game time, but add in multiplayer elements (since the assets involved are the same as single player assets, save for some different environments) to give a game more replay value. At least that's what makes the most sense as to why cross platform games tend to be on the short side. Uncharted was 8-10 hours (and gorgeous), I still haven't finished Ratchet (viva la Rock Band!) but I'm in the 10 hour range right now and I don't know how much I have left to play. Gears, while a fantastic looking game, is designed to be very linear. By that I mean that it is meant to funnel the player through very specific tracks. Sure they are gorgeous tracks, but they lack the 'open world' aspects of other games. Overall, both consoles have their shining moments, and their pitfalls. But to just write one console off wholesale is too fanboy-ish for any educated person.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:22 a.m. CST
Bring on the flick, too.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:23 a.m. CST
It is one of the most cinematic games of all time. Yes, the dialogue is cheesy at times and the plot is not too original, but the sci-fi and overall style put it high on the list of FPS's, and console games in general.
Gears, I think, more than Halo, would make good souce material for a movie (maybe get Willem Dafoe for Fenix?)
The only game-to-movie adaptations I'd like to see more would be Bioshock and a sequel to Tron.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:29 a.m. CST
1) Poor selection of games
2) Crappy online service
3) No vibration in the controllers
4) Stupid 6-axis-control schemes
5) Lack of good 3rd party support
6) Few exclusive titles
7) No acheivement points
8) No interface with your PC via Windows
That's just for starters, folks. If I buy a PS3 it wont be for the games (much)- just for the blu-ray player.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:29 a.m. CST
That is awesome. It makes me want to run out and get an XBox when it hits.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:42 a.m. CST
So that's the biggest reason you won't see it on PS3. Technically speaking of course Epic could do it for both platforms. And per the headline GOW2 is just using the updated Unreal Engine - not a new engine. Sorry to nitpick. :)
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:46 a.m. CST
I have no doubt resistance and some other games will be very good, but no one has played it yet, the last one had 40 people online, but does that make it a better game, because 16 player on Halo os actually worse than 8 player IMO. Also will R2 be a console seller, the first one was not that good a game, very very difficult game on hardest settings, but not that much improvement on old generation games.
For those that say that online Gears is acrp, well you ahve not platyed it enough, I said exactly the same thing when I tried it, wasnt for me, but once someone showed me what to do and how it works very dif from the Campaign I was hooked, once you get good its absolutley addictive in the extreme.
Agree with skinjob, just no real reason (Games wise)to fork out for a PS3...Yet
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:47 a.m. CST
You are correct, ts nothing to do with technology, but since Msoft have the best games coming out, its there machine a games fan should buy?
No?
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:51 a.m. CST
I really dug the whole art deco sci-fi of the 50's style environment and the story was really new and original. My only gripe was that most of the enemies never pose you that ig of a threat, even the Big Daddys can be dispatched pretty easily. This led to the game being more of a twitchy shooter rather than the atmospheric, creepy game it promised to be.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:55 a.m. CST
The combat was pretty simple, and with the vita-chambers dying had little consequence to the player. I think the designers wanted it to be a fairly simple game, so that gamers of all levels could explore Rapture easily and progress through the (awesome) story.
Feb. 21, 2008, 10:56 a.m. CST
From a gamer's standpoint, I agree - the 360 has the superior line-up right now. Over the course of this year the PS3 will hopefully get some exclusives that are worth having. I have both consoles, and not surprisingly I mostly use my PS3 as a blu-ray player. Uncharted is a very good game for the PS3, but it's also too short to justify a full price (in my opinion) - it's a game you can beat in six hours, and there's no sense in playing it again. For me the 360 is definitely my preferred console, and probably will be for this generation of consoles.

It was well-documented that Gears of War used 19 shades of grey, and six shades of blood. Geez!
Feb. 21, 2008, 11:20 a.m. CST
the ps3 might have superior hardware but what good is it when the software sucks ballz? thats why the 360 is a much better gaming console.
Feb. 21, 2008, 11:35 a.m. CST
But with Fable 2, Too Human, Ninja Gaiden II, and GoW II, I got to say that the PS3 cannot again match the quality and quantity of titles. Don't get me wrong, Gran Turismo and MGS4 will rock. But I personally don't think that it will be enough this year to get me to pick the PS3 up. Now if we can just get that Alan Wake date nailed down....
Feb. 21, 2008, 12:04 p.m. CST
I own one and love it for what it is but most developers have gone on the record as stating that the notion of the PS3 having more power than the XB360 is a misnomer. The system appears to have some nasty bottleneck issues and it’s not easy to program for, which is why most of the multiplatform games look and run better on the XB360. Don’t get me wrong, the system is capable of some truly spectacular graphics (Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet all look phenomenal) but the PS3 doesn’t have superior hardware although to be fair the console is much more reliable than the XB360.
Feb. 21, 2008, 12:16 p.m. CST
As i said, Blu Ray gives you more space, but it does nothing for your bottleneck issues, nor texturing. I will say this for the PS3, it is the best bet as a Blu Ray player.
Feb. 21, 2008, 12:27 p.m. CST
Nearly always look better on 360 because it's, 99% of the time, the lead SDK that games are made on. It simply has the better tools and more streamilined development process. They start games on the 360 then port them over. There's also the fact that PS3 has half the video texture memory; textures stored on BluRay are irrelevant when you only have 256MB to cram them into. Anyone seen Fight Night 3 on PS3 will know exactly how awful that game looks.

It's also a completely false assumption that BR is an asset to developers; infact many seem to have difficulty in filling 25GB which is why some games have taken to being bloated up with extra content, (see Stranglehold), to make it worth while putting them on those expensive HD discs. The fact is, 9GB is more than ample and the only games coming on multiple discs are typically japanese RPG's which are filled to the rafters with pre-rendered CG and speech.

Compression and a talented art team are all you need to fit current games on standard medium.
Feb. 21, 2008, 12:33 p.m. CST
In terms of raw computing power, PS3, on paper beats the 360 hands down. However, it's worth mentioning that we can't run linux on a 360 to actually benchmark the difference. It'd be nice if homebrew could be run on 360 because that'd be one way to settle arguments over who has the bigger baslls so to speak.

Cell is certainly a blinding processor, but PowerPC chips are no slacker either and anyone who writes them off simply hasn't got a clue what they're talking about.

Also, the RSX GPU in the PS3 is based on the same GPU that wound up in the 7800GTX; that's a 3 year old card for anyone counting. The 360 has a similar, nearly as old GPU from ATi, which is why PC games are now starting to look better....see Crysis or Far Cry 2.
Feb. 21, 2008, 1:36 p.m. CST
Nothing looks as good. Also, screw CliffyB and Epic for abandoning PC gaming and buying into the "the PC market is dying" BS.
Feb. 21, 2008, 1:52 p.m. CST
What you've posted pretty much mirrors what I've read from other developers, all of whom claim the PS3 looks better on paper but insist the XB360 is easier to squeeze results from.
Feb. 21, 2008, 1:57 p.m. CST
Epic hasn't abandoned the PC at all; they made a deal with MS to publish certain games on the XB360,specifically the Gears of War titles, and to give those games a timed exclusivity before releasing them onto the PC. Epic put out the newest Unreal on the PC first so I think it's a bit premature to accuse them of leaving the PC market. Also, Epic's work on the consoles thus far has been exceptional; Gears is still one of the best looking games on the market and Unreal on the PS3 looks and plays great.

Just they made tweaks to the code for it so it can do more. Like the meat cube, shading and lighting, and the new water effects.

the 360.If you look at the line-up on 360 the equivalent point in its life-cycle, PS3 is actually being very well supported. Bottom line is PS3 and 360 are actually very evenly matched technically, they have strengths in different areas but whichever you own, you should be seeing a similar level of performance. There have been some shitty 360 to PS3 ports (EA are particularly guilty if this), but titles like Burnout Paradise, CoD4, and DMC4 show how similarly the platforms perform when coded competently.

Who would design an assault rifle that would force you to shove the barrel of your weapon through an enemy's body to use the chainsaw attachment? You pull it out and it has a little meat or piece of bone jammed in there, and the next time you pull the trigger the pressure isn't dispersed evenly and you blow off half your face. The Chainsaw has to be extended in front of the barrel so the muzzle of the gun is kept clear of debris and obstructions. NERD ALERT

I'm not going to hold my breath for Killzone 2. Granted what I've seen of it so far is awesome but for the last 3 years it's been nothing but vaporware; brought out for special presentations when PS3 has had a rubbishing in a magazine or somewhere. If they can pull it off exactly as the videos they've shown then i'll be very impressed but PS3 is famous for not living up to it's expectations, (and i'm really pissed off about that), and to top it off, i thought the original Killzone was garbage.

Actually, I've not seen any mention of Killzone 2 at the GDC which is strange given it's a flagship title. Maybe i've missed it. I'd love to see some more stuff but that same video of the guys on that flying carrier is kinda wearing a bit thin now.

As for this years software line-up, the microsoft keynote from John Schappert claimed that there's going to be "more than a thousand games realesed on 360 in 2008". It certainly sounds like a spurious claim but there's no reason to actually doubt it. Of course, if there are 1000 games released, you can bet your life 75% of them will be crap.

I love my 360, but I hated Gears of War. It was a lot of looks, but little substance. It was just Run, Run, Run, Shoot a bunch of guys, Run, Run, Run, Shoot a bunch of guys, Run, Run, JUMP!, Shoot a bunch of guys, then vomit from motion sickness.
I never get motion sickness from games, but GoW did it to me with the jerky, shaky camera work. And what the hell fun is a game that puts you on a track? There's no player choice in the game; It just drags you from place to place, gives you an enemy, and then drags you around some more. Sure, you're the one doing the actual moving, but you can't deviate from the course they set for you. It's like a ride at Disneyland.
I'll take Grand Theft Auto IV, or the upcoming LOST game (which will be a sandbox-style adventure), or a shooter that doesn't tie me to a path, like Team Fortress.
Gears of War was WAY overhyped. It's a better movie than it is a game... Not that there's much actual gameplay to speak of, anyway.

...but I wouldn't mind a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player.
One place where I think PS3 has it ALL OVER the XBox 360 is in the ability to upgrade the hard drive yourself. It's RIDICULOUS that I have to pay so damn much for a bigger proprietary hard drive from Microsoft when the PS3 lets you drop in a SATA hard drive and format it on the console.
I'm also not fond of their price on the WiFi adapter. That's some ol' bullshit right there.

Um, no. That would be Bioshock, Fallout, or Planescape:Torment on a PC. Or Wasteland on the C64/C128. Best console game ever would be Final Fantasy III on the SNES. Best shooter ever would be Goldeneye on the N64. Best wrestling game ever would be WCW/NWO Revenge, or Virtual Pro 64 if imports are allowed. And hell, if we're going with imports, the greatest game ever is actually Bombliss for the Super Famicom. It's true, it's true!

It's a great shooter that found an open niche to occupy in a video game world saturated with shooters. The singleplayer gameplay did get repetitive in spots, and the tank/searchlight level was dumb as fuck, but online play was intense. Talk about a game that rewarded actual teamwork, and punished the morons who run straight for the sniper rifle at the start of every round. P.S. Halo 3's replay system needs to be standardized on all shooters from here on out, the amount of hilarious shit you'd otherwise miss is unbelievable.

the tech demo looked awesome so I have high hopes about the game especially if they setup a level where Fenix has to deal with 100 or so locusts at the same time. the power of that Unreal Engine is insane. the GDC has great we got Gears but also they showed footage of the new Bionic Commando and its loook awesome, the remake especially. theres videos of it up on www.consolepatrol.com

Gears of war is decent but it's got nothing on Call of Duty 4. The multiplayer alone is worth the 50 bucks. One of the best games ever.

I've playing it for a year straight. The multiplayer that is, Bioshock I beat in 5 days, put it away and never touched it again. What GOW naysayers and nongamers fail to realize, is it's not just the game itself, but the comradery between friends while playing Gears that makes it so much fun. The spectator mode lets you show off in front of everyone. The funny situations that occur while playing Gears and no online shooter game allows you to leap into the air, duck and cover and shoot around corners. Gears does all that. I can also rowdy run shotgun yah.

The perks are the only thing that set it apart. I'll give it that. Other than that it controls like other COD games. FPS need to evolve. Why can't I lean up against a wall and shoot around a corner in a FPS game? Why do I feel like i'm controlling a floating gun?

You start out on New Caprica in the Resistance, and you can either be a Colonial or a Cylon Sympathizer.

I purchased it back in October and haven't popped it in the 360 yet because my hdtv blew up. I'll be getting another tv in the coming weeks and plan on playing Gears first thing. I don't want to tarnish my first impressions by playing on my 19" tube.
Feb. 21, 2008, 7:39 p.m. CST
Did you like Resident Evil 4? The controls are similar to that, but with modifications of course. The rowdy run feature for example is very unique for a video game. I'm surprised no game has copied it yet.

RE4. Corrupted memory card on the GC prevented me from playing that. It's another on my list of games to get to. I pretty much just play CoD4 now though.

while hiding behind a wall's corner or crouching, you can blind shoot around/over your cover (quite effective with the shotgun, i might add).

Matchmaking for multiplayer was atrocious. No excuse not to have a streamlined Halo-esque matchmaking system these days. It should be basics nowadays to quickly invite your friends to a party and stay partied as you select match types, ala COD or Halo. Only thing that kept a lot of people away from Gears was the cumbersome multiplayer interphase.

I think the gears system for online play is the best I've seen. I'm not much of an online gamer gears and guitar hero are the only two games I really play, I think the gears system is great. All you need to do is choose a game mode and you get a list of games being played and you just pick one. I borrowed Halo 3 the other day, tried to play it online and had no idea what to do. Because I'd only ever played Gears I was looking for the same kind of list. From what my friends who play Halo online say, it takes 10 minutes to set up a game that only lasts about ten mins anyway. Whereas in GoW you can go from turning on your Xbox to playing online in less than 5, Thats if you don't care about ranked matches, which I don't thats a little more arsey. If anyone working on Gears 2 reads this, DON'T CHANGE THE ONLINE MATCH SYSTEM.
