Dr Moreau gives a mini-review to LOST SOULS!

Published at:  May 07, 1999 1:55:00 PM CDT

If memory serves (help me out Moriarty) but I believe Moriarty really enjoyed this script and felt the film had a lot of potential. Me... I can't wait, as I really enjoy both Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin. But hey.... that's me. Here's Dr. Moreau...

Just saw a test screening for LOST SOULS tonight in California. Very creepy
and cool plot. Winona Ryder plays a woman who has to stop a satanic
conspiracy. Very believable and real. Not stupid and insulting. The
director has two Oscars for cinematography, and now has made a visually
arresting movie that kind of rocks your sense of good and evil. Thank God
they didn't hype this up with special effects or absurd monsters. This movie
will give Ryder the jump start she needs, and will kick Ben Chaplin into the
action/thriller league. Fun and dark and smart. Makes you think, and the
best part of it is that the scary scenes could really happen.

Loved it. Hope they don't change it too much before they release it!

    Ya know...

    by cervaise

...Lately, every time I've read an unmitigated rave on this site, I almost automatically think: "marketing plant." And even more recently, when I read a gnashing-teeth slam, my reflex is: "jealous competitor." Am I overly cynical? Probably. Harry is usually pretty good about keeping his spies straight, verifying identities and tracking previous information to ensure reliability. But beyond that, I guess this is just a word-to-the-wise for future contributors: Be lucid, and clear, and balanced, and objective. Most of us can tell the difference between a writeup by someone who has no vested interest and just wants to talk about the movie, and someone who's just trying to beef up the buzz for an opening weekend. (Does anybody else subscribe to Sony's inane "Scoop" e-mail service? Talk about vapid marketing hype...) In other words, make sure your feedback can't be mistaken for the wrong kind. So, I'm not sure exactly what I'm trying to say here, other than to point out our collective cynicism, and observe how a high-quality, well-written writeup (such as those by the evil professor, truly a model for all) transcends those easy categories and cannot be dismissed with a knee-jerk reaction. ...Oh, by the way, "Lost Souls" looks iffy to me, but what do I know? :-)

    Who wrote the script?

    by tomtomb

Is it based on the Clive Barker story?

I don't believe it was a studio plant. I'm an NRG recruiter and although this wasn't one of our movies, there are a lot of screening-goers we call "regulars" because they hit 3 or 4 screenings per week. We did a movie Tuesday at that same location, and odds are Dr. Moreau was one of the people who was there Tuesday as well. I have a sneaking suspicion I know who Dr. Moreau is, but I will keep that to myself. After all, we always keep a sharp eye out for you "regulars" because you are money in the bank to us and we will hook you up with tickets in a heartbeat.
