Interested in helping out with two good causes'''

Published at:  May 06, 1999 8:08:29 AM CDT

Glen here...

...with a cool charity kind of thing which I thought might be of some interest to Coaxial readers.
The below press release / statement kind of says it all, so I'll let this story explain itself:

____________________

Tony Urban, author of "Autograph Collector" magazine's Kid's Corner, is
currently holding his 5th charity autograph auction. The auction began
on April 29th and runs until May 12th.

This year's event features items from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio,
Celine Dion, Kate Winslett, Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford, Clint
Eastwood, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Dennis Rodman, and more
than 2 dozen other superstars.

All monies raised in this spring's auction are being divided between the
"American Cancer Society", an organization dedicated to finding a cure
for cancer, and "In-Touch Hospice" a group which provides medical care for
patients with terminal diseases. These events are held in memory of Mr.
Urban's grandfather, Carl David Shoemaker who passed away from
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1991.

All items purchased in this auction are tax deductible. For more
information on this worthy cause, you can email Tony Urban at: HREF="mailto:epicfilms@sprynet.com">epicfilms@sprynet.com

Glen again...

I watched my father wither away into an unrecognizable, disgusting pulp over a gut wrenching
six month period. As such, I gotta say I believe in both causes Tony is supporting here. It should
also be pointed out that he contributed substantially to last year's Coaxial Christmas Toy Drive, so
this guy really believes in helping out those in need, and doing the right thing even if it means a bit of
self sacrifice.

I'm happy to point you his direction...

The American Cancer Society can gobble my crank, for all I care. While their cause is certainly valid and important, the fact that they continue to funnel their donations into animal testing is reprehensible. Animal tests only produce misleading data that does not translate well to human physiology. Computer models, cell cultures and others, based directly on human physiology, are far more accurate and much less expensive. Don't be fooled, the folks benefitting are NOT cancer patients, they are the engineers and the labs that breed and house the animals.
My Christmas present last year was watching my best friend's mother, someone close to me, slowly devoured by cancer. Her life was not prolonged by any animal research, nor will anyone else's. It's a complete lie. Do some independent research, as I have done. The R&D of medicinals is ruled by money, not compassion, for humans or otherwise. When the ACC stopped by my door the other day, I politely refused.
    That's my rant.

By the way, it IS at least heartening that someone used this site for something thought of as a good cause. Far better than begging for gifts.

    Just a note

    by epicfilms

I just felt the need to add a bit of information here. The American Cancer Society has 2 purposes. The first is trying to find a cure for cancer. The second is helping cancer patients. This includes providing medicine, money for gas to go to and from doctor's appointments and chemotherapy sessions, and reccommending patients to specialists and clinical trials. I just didn't want to end on a sour note, with everyone thinking that all the Cancer Society did was give the disease to lab animals. They do a great deal to provide help to people suffering through the disease. Thank you! Tony Urban
