Link to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" finale review !!!
Glen here...
Okay, folks.
So many of you whined, bitched, and complained about my " no spoilers" policy concerning the
last episode (series finale) of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, I thought I'd mention this to
you.
Since I'm not gonna post spoilage for the last episode...and am not going to review the script
thoroughly as some of you had requested...someone else has decided to do it. If you wanna go read
a buncha stuff about the show's final episode, HREF="http://trekweb.com/cool/Headlines/WYLB_exclusive.html">CLICK HERE to jump
TrekWeb.com.
BE AWARE: there is spoilage in that thar review, so once you go there, you could be spoiled.
Of course, that's why you'd be clicking n the link above anyway, so I guess I don't really need to
warn you about spoilers... ;-)
Enjoy!!!

The author of the spoilers is Steve Perry. Not to be confused with the excellent sci-fi author, this guy's obviously a wannabe writer with delusions of grandeur. He spends half the article complaining about how the final show is gonna suck, and the other half on how it could have been done better. And he sums up with a *blatant* attack on JMS. He shows his lack of knowledge of the events of Babylon 5 in trying to make a comparison on why Sisko's ultimate fate is better than Sheridan's, and how at least the last show of DS9 "because it actually brings things to a conclusion, instead of dragging us through a maudlin denouement that leaves too many questions unanswered." and finally advises JMS to take his Hugo and be happy. Last time I checked, personal issues are nNOT supposed to be dealt with in an impartial, critical review. It's a shame that our mysterious Mr. Perry never learned this lesson.

Sounds like the finale will be great. I Just cant wait till it comes out.
-
Help me out here...How many shows has JMS put on the air? And his spinoff, lets see... that's been cast aside for months by TNT in favor of Wrestling, Matlock and the Adventures of Brisco County? Having said that, lets just all sit back and enjoy what will probably be last worthwhile Star Trek story to hit the big or small screen for sometime. With TNG in limbo and Voyager making me yearn for an episode of Mama's Family(which is on a Turner network, something JMS's sequel hasn't been able to accomplish!), this is going to be it for a few years. I think all Trek fans will agree that DS9 long ago surpassed TNG in quality. I think the last episode will be fantastic and worth the build up.

Bah. I'm sick of all the B5-Star Trek mudslinging and anger over what amounts to nothing more than a few TV shows. The comments the reviewer seems to be speaking about are JMS's dislike over the creation of the DS9 idea after he had picthed his B5 idea to Paramount. That distaste is well-known, but as far as I;m concerned, that is nothign but water under the bridge because he wound up making his show anyway. I haven't seen any other comments to that effect. In any case, a cessaiton of whining on every side would be to everyone's benefit, and each show should be respected for what they are. Everything else is probably just jealousy

Generally, I'm happy to read anything that might be a spoiler. But I recently decided to try and not read too much about the final DS9 episodes. I had read a few things a while back that I hope are not going to come about, so now I'd rather wait and be surprised. DS9 kicks ass and even it's worst shows are still better then some of the crap out there. I think I read too much about SWE1 and now I'm not going to be surprised by a few things. As much as I love reading as much as I can about this stuff, I still remember being shocked at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. (Hey, you might have seen it coming, but I was only 14 at the time!) So as with all things in life, I guess too much of anything isn't a good thing.
-
I'm sure there must be some Trekkies out there you know this (yes, I said Trekkies), but did Nana Visitor have a breast reduction at some point? I remember thinking at the beginning of the run of DS9 that she had quite a rack, then I stopped watching 'cause the show stunk, and when I tried watching an episode recently, I noticed that she was flat as a board! I'm guessing she had implants at the start and had them taken out when she had the spawn of Bashir. (Why the hell am I writing this?!!)
-
Spoilers or not, everybody knows we will ALL be watching!
-
I just wish that the final DS9 episode will live up to its expectations, cuz i would hate for it to start another DS9-B5 war over which final episode was better ( SiL was excellent )..... as regarding to the spoiler, I'm sure that the comments made by JMS must had some truth in it, or had been misquoted .... he isn't a fool, after all, and he is usually very cautious about this whole DS9-B5 thing ....
-
I would really hate DS9's legacy to be a full scale Sci-fi fan civil war over whether or not DS9 ripped off the final episode of B5. For such a frighteningly good show, it was frighteningly inconsistent at times, but I've really gotten into this nine-part finale. I think I might actually be sad to see it go. But from what I've read of the spoiler, I'm not exactly feeling great about the fallout potential here. The whole Sisko = prophet thing has been in place for a while now, but falling into a cave with Dukat, doesn't that seem a little Zha'hadumish for some people?-CS
-
That was a bit of a low blow don't you think? So you don't like B5, we get the point, but B5 made it on the merits, it didn't get to ride the waves of a all-powerful franchise-CS

I've now read three DS9 finale synopses from different sources.Well,I've been predicting a new outbreak of B5 rip off claims before and now this looks almost inevitable. The Cardassians/Centauri similarity was obvious for some time and it reaches it's logical conclusion with the attack on Cardassia Prime in the finale. That Sisko/Sheridan/Prophets/First Ones thing is hard to ignore too.Does it mean that "What You Leave Behind" is going to be crap and DS9 writers are absolutely talentless? Not at all...I think it'll be a very long time before a sci fi show with a genuinely new and original story arc will appear on US TV.OK,Trek's been too similar to B5 lately but let's have a look at another major sci fi show - The X Files. We've got: 1) a massive invasion storyline involving an ancient alien aggressor(Colonists) that uses infiltration tactics (Shadows/Dominion?);and involving shapeshifters (Changelings?)2)A loveable baddie (Cancer Man) who seems to be well disposed to the good guys from time to time (Londo/Dukat?)3) A group of enemy collaborators (the Elders) who'll turn against their masters given an opportunity (Centauri/Cardassians?)4)Main characters (Mulder/Scully)who'd attracted attention of powerful alien entities and may not even be 100% human anymore (Sisko/Sheridan?).The list goes on....The point I'm trying to make is that ,basically, details are everything. The overall story doesn't matter that much-it's pretty similar in most of TV sci fi, what matters is the way it is conveyed on screen. And that means acting, dialogues, music, design,SFX.I like Babylon 5, Star Trek and X Files in equal measure and there's much diversity between those shows but not enough to start branding one single show as a definite rip off of another.
P.S. Kira diguised as a Breen is TOO "Return Of Jedi"'ish though... -
I went over to TrekWeb and read the "spoiler laden" review. Pathetic. In typical Trek fashion it looks like the closer will be devoid of any real grit or suspense. DS9 has had an odd course. It's first years were fairly crummy. Then it perked up--with only a few clunkers a year. But there are still plenty of episodes where the drama is leeched out and the wrong decisions seem to get made. The spoilers over there seem to make it look like they just tipped the playing board over and went off to write more Voyager eps. JMS should relax because DS9 is not the achievement that B5 is and, while I have reservations about SiL, I have to admit that I cried more tears for B5 than I'm likely to cry for '9.
-
I've always felt B5 received more support from critics and the fanboys because it wasn't part of the Star Trek uber-franchise. Sorta like David vs Goliath except with geeks right? I've always felt JMS sold himself short by the ripoff claims. He developed what some, and obviously not me, felt was a classic sci-fi show. There's Coke people and there's Pepsi people, this rivalry is no different. Some people rally around the little guy, some see it as crying sourgrapes. Star Trek was around for 25 years before B5 and it'll be around long after. Why resent something because it's successful? Because its not "cool" anymore? Kinda silly isn't it? While I believe JMS contributed nothing to the Trek franchise, I applaud him for sticking with his vision. It sure beats the hell out of Voyager. Gotta go, I think "In the Heat of the Night" is on TNT.
-
Let me explain. My last post was probably ill-considered, in that it focused too much on that old chestnut B5 vs. ST. Let me recap: I don't CARE if JMS got ripped off or not. The problem is not the comparison. The problem is HOW DS9 is realized as a thing unto itself. Like many other fanboys, I love/loved Star Trek. I WANT a glorious future for that little shared cultural sandbox. I watched last night's episode of DS9 and rather enjoyed it, as I've done more of in recent years. But...... DS9 is about all that's left. Voyager is virtually unwatchable and TNG is now blowing up the Enterprise weakly... And DS9 has always had plotting problems. The actors do well, but there seems to be (as the script snitch pointed out) a certain lack of dramatic follow-through. And the character reset button gets hit: in last night's episode, Worf gets lectured on honor and the fate of the Empire. This SHOULD have piquancy and depth... except, dammit, we've seen DOZENS of this scene since we were introduced in TNG! (Yawn) Klingons are morons. Don't you want something more? They are showing ads now for the finale. The fleet assembled, ready to go into the final battle. It looks like Sheridan's fleet up there, waiting to face certain annihilation by the combined Shadows and Vorlons. I want the same *kinds* of feelings to be stirred... the sense of something completing... the sense of wonder and dread... I want and desperately desire a powerful sendoff for the series. Perhaps I will have my fondest desire rewarded. I certainly hope so. You're right, Michael. ST will be remembered long after B5 is forgotten... and B5 is not the greatest TV ever made... but just this once I'd like to see a modern ST episode that haunts the imagination. This is that opportunity. Let's hope they don't muff it.

I wish I could just let things be.. but the Trek franchise has been driven into the ground. And different shows using similar themes, and a degree of similar plot twists is one thing. But Paramount's incredible lack of creativity with Deep Space 9 is not something that should be accepted by the fans. So my feud is not with fellow Trek-geeks everywhere- and I am a Trek-geek, Reformed, just not Orthodox.- it is with Paramount.
-
Ok..here's an idea..let's stop the DS9 and B5 bashing and instead turn our attention to Voyager, the most pathetic piece of crap I've ever seen. As loyal as I am to Trek, even I will admit that show is horrible! Has anyone heard if Mulgrew is leaving? I know she made some noise about that and she got married to some retired politician. Maybe she can work on the marriage. God knows a new direction couldn't hurt the show. Its got no place to go but up. Voyager is so bad the SciFi channel probably won't have any use for it when it goes off the air. I think that's as bad as it gets for a SciFi show.
-
Deep Space Nine is a brilliant mix of politics and Sci-Fi. I used to think Voyager was better but now my opinion has changed.
If you dont like the show then dont watch it -
Ok, I'm a dunce. I posted a message here a couple of weeks ago about Voyager bashing, and have just now come to the realization that there's a reason there is Voyager bashing here. I'm reading postings from hard cord DS9 fans. I hadn't previously figured out that Trek fandom has fragmented. I'm one of the few that enjoys all the varities of Trek.
I will miss DS9. In a way, I think the war arc has taken away from some of the variety of the episodes this season, but I think the show has always been well written. I've always wondered why the African American community has been so silent about this show. It been the only show on T.V. that shows an African American man in such a positive position of authority. Who's cooler than Sisko? Emissary, Starfleet captain, cook, he does it all! I'd like to see a big screen DS9 entry.
