The Final Four!! Learn What's At The End Of HBO's THE WIRE!!

Published at:  Feb 17, 2008 3:08:29 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Is the Stanfield organization to go the way of the Barksdales? Is McNulty to go the way of Bunny, Herc and Prez? Or worse?

HBO has forwarded the last few loglines for “The Wire,” which goes dark forever in just three weeks.

If you thought the tale of Homeless Larry couldn’t get any sadder, wait till you meet Larry’s parents tonight.

Episode #57: "Took"
Debut: SUNDAY, FEB. 17
An unexpected call puts Templeton back in the spotlight - and gets McNulty more attention than he expected. Bunk bucks at Landsman (Delaney Williams) when ordered to help with the force's most recent red ball. Omar sends Marlo a message; Carcetti proves he's still an adept fund-raiser; Carver (Seth Gilliam) gift-wraps a witness for Bunk; Bubbles shows a reporter the ropes; Freamon tries to crack a clock code; Greggs prepares for a visit from her son; Michael has a close call; Haynes (Clark Johnson) can't shake his suspicions about Templeton; assisted by the top-drawer lawyer Billy Murphy (Billy Murphy), "cash and carry" Davis makes his day in court a memorable one.

Teleplay by Richard Price; story by David Simon & Richard Price; directed by Dominic West.

Episode #58: "Clarifications"
Debut: SUNDAY, FEB. 24
Baltimore's renewed police commitment brings fresh recruits to Daniels (Lance Reddick) and McNulty, starting with Carver. Facing a new political challenge, Carcetti is forced to make dangerous political deals. As the Pulitzer season winds down, Haynes approaches Templeton about his sources. Bunk returns a McNulty favor; little Kenard (Thuliso Dingwall) makes a big score; Dukie finds work; Fletcher (Brandon Young) continues his interview with Bubbles; Freamon presents his latest plan to a prosecutor; Sydnor (Corey Parker Robinson) uncovers the missing piece to a puzzle; McNulty comes clean.

Teleplay by Dennis Lehane; story by David Simon & Dennis Lehane; directed by Joe Chappelle.

Episode #59: "Late Editions"
Debut: SUNDAY, MARCH 2
With Steintorf (Neal Huff) ordering Rawls (John Doman) to initiate "creative" remedies for the rising crime rate, Freamon's (Clarke Peters) vigilance pays off with a promising lead, sending Sydnor (Corey Parker Robinson) and the department into overdrive. Although Daniels (Lance Reddick) is originally delighted, a further probe with Pearlman (Deirdre Lovejoy) reveals some troubling source information. McNulty (Dominic West), feeling betrayed, doesn't feel like sharing in Freamon's celebration; Michael (Tristan Wilds) is suspicious about his latest assignment; Haynes (Clark Johnson) gets fresh eyes to help with fact-checking; Namond's (Julito McCullum) debating skills make Colvin (Robert Wisdom) proud; Davis (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) points a finger at Levy (Michael Kostroff) and the courts; and Bubbles (Andre Royo) recounts a recent temptation overcome.

Teleplay by George Pelecanos; story by David Simon & George Pelecanos; directed by Joe Chappelle.

Episode #60: " - 30 - "
Debut: SUNDAY, MARCH 9
Carcetti (Aidan Gillen) maps out a damage-control scenario with the police brass in the wake of a startling revelation from Pearlman and Daniels. Their choices: clean up the mess, or hide the dirt. With his leads predictably drying up, McNulty asks Landsman (Delaney Williams) to pull police off the homeless case - until a fresh homicide ramps up the investigation. A frustrated Haynes finds his concerns about Templeton (Tom McCarthy) falling on increasingly deaf ears. Convinced he has the upper hand, but caught in a legal quandary, Levy plays a cat-and-mouse game with Pearlman. Bubbles debates whether to greenlight a newspaper story about his life; Dukie (Jermaine Crawford) seeks out an old mentor for a loan; and Marlo (Jamie Hector) oversees a new co-op order as he maps out his next move. As the officers stage an Irish wake for another dearly departed officer, the seeds of the future are sown throughout Baltimore.

Teleplay by David Simon; story by David Simon & Ed Burns; directed by Clark Johnson.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

    by ninjatracksuit

This season feels fast, but fits perfectly with the others, when viewing the whole picture. Sseason 4 ratcheted things up and kinda put everything in place that is happening now, and season 3 put everything in place for that season and...Well, you get the idea. I've only been sad when one show went off the air (laugh all you want - it was NIGHT COURT, and I was twelve), but I'll have to say that I am saddened to a great degree by the thought of no more WIRE - no more McNulty, no more Bunk, no more Omar, no more Greggs, no more Lester, no more Bubbles, no more Daniels. Damn.

That's going to be fucking huge. There's also a wonderful callback with Greggs having her kid over, paralleling when McNulty has his kids over in season one, involving Ikea. I've been really pleased with this season so far.

has an extended length, like seson four's finale did. I have no idea how it will end, or how it should end rather, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make a big deal about it, and just show that nothing has changed, and the chain of command continues.

    by darthscotland

Looks like Marlo might make it out the end of the Wire not deadified.

And if 'little Kenard (Thuliso Dingwall) makes a big score' is what I think it is then I shall jump out the window/shark along with season 5.

I'm thinking my feelings at the end of this series will be 'bitter disappointment' after 4 top quality seasons.

I will be happily proved wrong.

    by reynard muldrake

But I'm glad - I wanted to read this and try to wrap my head around the fact that they really only have 3 weeks to go and somehow are going to 'wrap it up', but am also glad I have no REAL idea how it all plays out. Though the idea of seeing Bunny, Namond and Prez (has to be Dukie's old 'mentor') one more time is nice. Who's the cop with the wake?!?!? I bet it's good symbolism too of the institution being a static thing falling behind...Damn this season better come on DVD ASAP after its done airing with a shitload of extras on it - like massively comprehensive interviews etc, outtakes...but most of all, just get it out.

    Wire fans:

    by toshiro-solo

I have no idea how you'd track it down at this point, but any fan of this show would love a lengthy interview with David Simon that ran in the McSweeny's affiliated magazine "The Believer" this past summer. It is probably the best interview about the creation of a TV show that I've ever read, and Simon's trademark attitude is all over it. It's excerpted in the booklet to the soundtrack to The Wire that came out about a month ago, so you can get a feel for the piece there, but I'm telling you - it's worth tracking the full thing down. Really good stuff. I'm gonna miss the hell out of this show...

    by eggbeater

No spoilers just speculation. I just know, in true Wire fashion, that characters I love will die and characters I hate will live. I've loved the season so far and I think Simon has a plan to wrap it up. Just please don't kill any of the four main kids.

    by danielkurland

Where you see Bubbles has turned his life around, and has a job, and at the end he's just with these big pots of water and such. Just as a result of how this show works and operates, I fully expected one of the pots to have boiling water in it, which he'd accidentally spill on himself, or some robber would come into the place and shoot him. So everyone's thoughts about people dying towards the end are not off base at all.

    by the_squid

McNulty? My buddy and I were thinking about this. That would be a very emotional finale. I have very little doubt that the final scence of the show going to be the "cop funeral" in the bar. I always loved that scence from season 3.

    Sticking with my theory:

    by eggbeater

Lester dies of a heart attack. I still think its gonna be Lester's wake in the finale. Ever since he told McNulty "I'll take it to my grave" in an earlier episode, I always thought he would pass away. The smile on his face when he said it just made me think of foreshadowing. It's probably just a throwaway line but I have my suspicions. Wouldn't it be great if it was Rawls's wake and all of his past lovers attended and the series ended with a nice montage set to a killer Celine Deon song. A man can dream.

    by eggbeater

Most of the posts for this talkback are raves for the show. I agree its the best show ever made, but I want to here some theories for the final episodes. Who will die? Who will be arrested? Who will get fired? Who will stay the same? So come on guys, let's wake this talkback up. No Spoilers. I've already made that mistake before and got my ass chewed out. My theories: As stated before, Lester will die of a heart attack. I think the last shot of Marlo will be the police with a clear tap on his phone leading us to believe he will eventually be brought down. McNulty will be fired or in jail. Bunk will stay the same. Carrcetti will catch shit when the homeless murders turn out to be a lie. Templeton will end up with a better job and not get caught. Bubbles will get a book deal. Omar will survive! Michael will be arrested. Chris will get killed by Omar and Snoop will flee. That's it for me and keep in mind this is all theories.

    Highlights from tonights episode;

    by eggbeater

There were a couple things I wasn't too fond of. The Richard Belzer cameo completely took me out of the show. I also wasn't a big fan of McNulty on the voice distorter. One of the great things about the first season, was that they didn't have the technology like wires and cameras in the beginning to take down avon. They had to go to the FBI. Then this season Lester just breaks out a voice modifier. Some things i did like was the last scene with Kima and her son. That was genius. I actually would have liked that if it was the last scene of the series. The clay davis courtroom scene was fuckin hilarious. Omar killin Savino was also top notch. I do wish they would finally show Marlo's reaction to all the shit Omars been doing. In one of the season 4 commentaries David Simon says in season 5 we will finally see Marlo get angry. I don't think we've seen that yet so I'm waitin. All in all good episode.

I get that to stay true to the streets of Baltimore, and to allow the murder poh-lice to finally win one, Omar had to go down... but Omar deserves better. Let him go down fighting. Gravy's spoilers

    by cptrios

Can be found all over the place (which doesn't make him any less of a prick), and frankly I don't have much cause to believe that they're true. Sure, someone's "friend at HBO" might have confirmed them, but whatever...I've seen several people who claim to have seen the last three episodes give entirely different accounts of them. All of them seem to agree on Kenard's "big score" (FUCK FUCK FUCK) but if you've sen the clip, there's plenty to suggest that it's not the real scene (i.e. Omar's lack of limp).

    Lack of limp

    by charlie murphy

Omar's limp seems to vary from scene to scene... I figure Omar's a pretty smart dude and is playing it up a little bit to bait Marlo... and about Kenard's big score, most people on here seem opposed to the idea, but I kinda like it... (would've like it more if i didn't know before i saw the fucking episode)... can you imagine what a fucking legend that kid's gonna be in fifteen years? David Simon's always said the game never ends, and this just further pushes that point. i actually think it's a little brilliant, actually. but still, fuck you gravy. i still can't get over that.

The Wire and No Country for Old Men comparison:

    by eggbeater

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER for both the movie and episode 58. Do Not Read if you haven't seen both. I just wanted to throw out a cool comparison. This is referring to the Marlo/Omar scene and the Chigurh/LLewelyn Moss scene. In both The Wire and NCFOM, you have one character talking about how one's gonna kill the other and there's so much build up and build up only for one character to be killed by a random side character. There is never a showdown. I don't think it's a bad thing in either case, I just thought it was a neat little comparison.

    Barefoot Creepy Others???

    by tman2626

I may have missed the boat on this but was it ever addressed that the others were intially shown as creepy whispering people walking barefoot in the woods who killed people with a boomerang I believe??? Was it all of a sudden just decided they would be normal people living in a community on the island without ever address the prior incarnation?

Love the show but that is something that has always bothered me.

I don't hate it artistically either, I'm just mad that one of my favorite characters in the history of television has to die (though frankly, and this might sound hideously idiotic, this particular death is somehow going to make every character death from hereon in easier to bear). If you haven't seen ep. 8, don't read this. The comparison to No Country for Old Men is sound, but there are also comparisons to the Assassination of Jesse James to be had. Both are legends. Both go out like chumps. I'm in the camp that thought it was brilliant/shocking/completely in character. Also loved the scene where the FBI profiles the serial killer - freaking hilarious!

Yea I posted on imdb earlier. I wasn't really trying to compare the charaters but more the situation and uproar from fans. Spoiler. They both had the same build up with no showdown. Llewelyn and Omar were both survivors the entire time only to be killed by someone who we didn't think would kill them. We wanted that showdown but I actually liked the outcome of both.

it wasn't THAT big a spoiler

    by mazzke

They certainly foreshadowed the hell out of who was going to kill Omar. In one of the previous episodes, the little kid said something like "Omar is a bitch gimp" or something like that right after he put a gun to Michael's head. He was the only one in the group, including the previously immovable Michael, who wasn't scared shitless. At that point, I thought the kid was gonna have a role in helping find Omar. And then a few scenes before the deed, Omar is walking through an alley; all the kids yell "Omar!" and scatter, except the same kid who calmly watches him walk by; Omar ignores him, not considering him a threat. And even the actual scene itself was obvious as hell. You knew something was gonna happen when the camera angle is all close in, clearly trying to obscure what's going on in the store, even though Omar isn't doing anything interesting. He even looks over when he hears someone walk in and decides it's not a threat, before the big kablooey.

I guess Simon's point is that every tough guy eventually overlooks something and falls. Another youngin always picks it up. It's an endless cycle with no winners. I too would have enjoyed Omar torturing Marlowe for a few episodes, quartering him and then skull fucking his head, but I suppose this ending is a bit more meaningful.

    Omar deaths will play on

    by mazzke

I bet Omar's death ends up being exactly why Marlowe goes down. Did you say how shaken Chris was when he heard Omar was dead? Everybody else was celebrating while Chris looked downright shell-shocked. Chris realized that even the baddest motherfucker out there can be taken down by random shit. That's the endgame for those guys. He'll probably realize this, let his little protege Michael escape the life, cop to some murders and snitch on Marlowe, so he can't have him killed.

Omar may have become a sort of antihero for us and maybe those out in the streets. But ya know what? Having Omar go out like some heroic soldier on the battlefield is just not how this show goes. Someone like Omar would very likely go out like that. If it's one thing I know about this show, it's that you rarely get what you expect, and you often get what you don't want. Too bad. And Omar may pick and choose who to kill, but he's still a murderer.

    Omar (spoilers)

    by reynard muldrake

Another thought on Omar going out like this (or at all) is that I think it's symbolic of the "loss of code" (aka 'the old school' of the streets). We saw Bodie get killed in the same manner - frustrated, and left all alone as a true 'soldier' for stepping up to the wanton nonsense of Marlo and the M.O. of how things are done now. I thought it was very telling that the last scene of Omar (before the convenience store) is just him...all alone...on the street corner...having only dumped a few g-packs...and his voice almost cracks as he calls out into the silence and abandonment for Marlo to sack up and "do it right"...no code...Omar is a dinosaur...and when you then have Kenard be the one to take him out...it reminded me a lot of 'City of God' and those young-uns that run the favelas at the end ...or at least are the heirs apparent. Just some thoughts.

    Fuck David Simon

    by weebay

Oh please don't give me that realism code of the street bullshit. The Wire is a fictionalized show plain and simple. David Simon could have killed of Omar anyway he wanted but he chose to give a big FUCK YOU to the fans of the show. Oh and I thought No Country for Old men was pretentious bullshit and the ending was crap. I bet I know what he was thinking that he would show everyone that no character is safe. blah blah blah. Been there done that. Actually keeping Omar alive would have been going against the grain and bold if you ask me. At least let him go out with his boots on.

If were going to talk realism let's do it. I live in Baltimore. Lived here all my life. There has never been a drug organization that put 22 bodies in any vacant houses. Never! We've never had a serial killer on the lose in the city either which means we've never had a reporter or a detective fake a serial killer either. How much realism is that?

Look. No one is saying that Omar couldn't die or shouldn't die, but as a FICTIONAL character that the audience had so much invested in I think the writers owed the fans more that's all.

Your post further up the page regarding Omar standing in the street alone was spot-on. I agree wholeheartedly, and am satisfied with the way things turned out. Plus, let's not forget that Omar's death put Lester on Cheese's tail.
And regarding budbundy's spoilers...those are the ones that have been flopping around everywhere, and I guess they seem reasonable enough. One surprising, out-of-character (for Simon), "unrealistic" thing that I'm holding out for now is that Bubs somehow makes good. If Simon is giving us all of this hope for him now, with the news story and everything, just to kill him off, THAT is going to be some fan-alienating bullshit. Though the show's over anyway...who needs the fans?

Hey thanks. I'm definitely still processing through it. Someone posted this over at the Facebook group page and I think it really hits a lot on the head and hearkens back a good bit on the 'legend' thing:

"TV Critic Alan Sepinwall already wrote previously that he thought Kenard or someone "unworthy" would kill Omar. He said about episode 8 recently (like a few minutes ago):

Because, as with The Sopranos, nothing on this show is accidental or extraneous. I knew Omar wasn't going to succeed in killing Marlo -- been there, did that with Stringer -- and the entire tone of his return to B'more storyline has been unglamorous and anti-legend. It just seemed apropos -- and very much in the Western movie spirit in which Omar is written (see "The Wild Bunch" or "The Gunfighter") -- that Omar would die at the hands of someone "unworthy" of killing him. And who's lower on the totem pole of the game than Kenard, who utters a line expressing complete disrespect for Omar's legend?"

If you listen to the commentary (or just watch) the episode where Brother Mouzone confronts Omar in the alleyway before they go in against Stringer together - it's shot/staged/scripted very "Old School Western" (and the commentary confirms that's what they were going for) --- these two almost 'mythic' figures squaring off...so then going back to the quote/analysis above, I found it very interesting and almost 'comforting' to read that this guy thought Omar going this way was like...yep, a Western again...where someone unworthy takes him out, because who was 'worthy' anyway - lots to process...and as hard of a time as I'm having with it, I'm coming around to seeing it as almost the one true way to do it...
