Red Band PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Trailer wins the bake-off!

Published at:  Feb 13, 2008 8:23:12 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... The PINEAPPLE EXPRESS red-band trailer is kinda awesome - and I've heard from several people that have seen this film in test screenings and it kicked their ass into the dirt. It's far more than just a comedy - there's a tonal shift that apparently kicks your ass hard. I can not wait to see it. For now - here's the trailer...

...Wow...It looks like a really shit film got raped by a really great film. Weird choice of M.I.A for the trailer music, weird choice of director. I was wondering what David Gordon Green could bring to an Apatow world comedy...Seems like he just folded into their style. Looks kind of like Midnight Run meets Harold and Kumar. Odd really.

    by ryanislyin

It makes geeks/losers/slackers think they have a chance. I have a couple of daughters, and all I could think of while watching Superbad was "Jesus, as if all I had to worry about was the jocks trying to knock up my girls, now the nerds think they have a shot." If Michael Cera came anywhere near my girls, money and fame be damned. I'd remind them about Darwin, and natural order. What ever happened to "the jocks get the girls"? Oh, yeah. Forgot where I was at.

    by the real mirajeff

Ryan, we DO have a chance. There is no natural pecking order. When did you grow up, the 50's? Did you and your spouse 'go steady?' There's nothing wrong with Apatow indulging geek fantasties. That's why people go to the movies. And who knows, maybe one of your daughters will grow up to be the next Midol Girl. Would that be the worst thing in the world? I should think not. Besides, Pineapple Express is David Gordon Green's film, not Apatow's. It's the Greg Mottola thing all over again.

I graduated high school a few years ago, and am speaking from 2000-2004 experience. The drug dealers get the most poon, followed by the jocks. But the jocks get the good looking girls who are least likely to have vd. Geeks/losers/slackers as a group didn't get the hot girls, but there were many individual successes.

I loved that 4-minute clip they released with the Superbad DVD. Between that and Franco's stuff on FunnyOrDie.com, I've become a fan. I think he's also as short as I am, which makes me feel better about myself.

I like the slow-motion shot of Rogen jumping onto Cole's back. That occurs after the "tonal shift" and probably during the final action sequence.

If this is good, it should cement Rogen's and Goldberg's place amongst the video store school of filmmakers.

    by applescruff

Yeah it rocked, the trailer was interesting. The actual movie felt slightly different, and I think it had to do with the fact that there was music going throughout this and in the film there was little music. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and I'm upset that they gave away some of the stuff they did in the trailer. Fuck it, though. If it gets some of you haters out there to give it a shot, then it does it's job. This is the best thing that Seth Rogen and James Franco have ever been involved in. Oh and I saw The Signal tonight. and we can get that bad year behind us. Knocked Up was almost as funny as those horrible DTV comedies that are on Comedy Central. Superbad did rule though. The first teaser I saw for this look really lame. But starting to think that its going to turn out ok, seeing actors smoke fake weed is usually pretty gay though. Oh and also Half Baked already has the title for best weed movie ever, and don't think that this movie will top it. I wonder if the poster is going to be a picture of Hogsqueal with the saying "Would you smoke weed with this guy?". Anyways just like Mottola, David Alan Grier is a better director then the Cable Guy.

I love Seth Rogen and this trailer is damn hilarious from beginning to end. I love the bit with Franco diving into the dumpster in broad daylight and suggesting they just stay there, complaining that he's "already in the dumpster." Damn that's great. I like the idea of these two guys having to go on the run from gangsters and getting caught up in some kind of action film, but i'm tired of the "lol weed is cool".

Reminds me too much of the two types of people who smoke weed, those that enjoy it and just get on with it and know that it's pretty much as accepted as alcohol and cigarettes as an enjoyable drug, and those that enjoy it and have to shout about it to everyone about how awesome weed is and how cool they are for smoking it.

And I knew Apatow didn't direct. Got some "Story" credits, though, right? From a female perspective (and someone who spent a lot of time in a relationship with an alpha male), the jock alpha male tends to be an enormous douche. Engaged to a nerd now... way happier. You should hope you're daughter avoids jackass dickheads with massive overcompensating tendencies (Dude! Check out how big my truck is!) and heads for people who actually care about her and have a brain.

Oh right, laughed my ass off at the trailer. I think it'll be a blast. Out of curiosity, those of you in the "we hate Apatow" camp... what do you find funny? Honestly, I think the guy saved American comedy... apart from the flicks he and his crew are making I watch almost no new comedy. I'd rather enjoy some Monty Python or Top Secret than sit through another Epic/Date/Scary/Shitty Movie.

    by sleazyg.

Not that I don't dig MIA and all, but I think it's only fair to point out the music she's on top of there is The Clash's "Straight To Hell". She's also done cuts that sample the theme to "Sanford and Son" and have her singing the chorus to the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind". I have no problem with sampling, covers, or anything else--just like to make sure people know their source material.

It's a painfully boring national pasttime. An intense game of checkers is frankly more exciting. As for me being sorely mistaken, I think you're a little out of your league on this one, pal. Apatow does not have 'complete control' on all of his movies, especially the ones he's not even directing, nor do any of them suck. I'm surprised more vitriol has not been directed at you in this talkback. How dare you slander the Apatow name! Your daughters would be embarrassed if they knew their old man was such a square alpha male.

    You call it "square"...

I call it the "bandwagon". I can accept anybody thinking baseball is boring, mainly because most of the interesting stuff doesn't happen on television. What I can't understand is you swinging on Apatow's nutsack like you (and most of the talkbackers on this website) do. I like to think I have a fairly good idea what "funny" is (for instance: your response was "not funny"), but with Superbad, I was dumbfounded. Here, on a site I read just about every day, with a bunch of critics I semi-respect, you guys just fucking GUSH over this movie. I kinda wish I HAD taken HGH... maybe the side effect would have been I'd agree with your sweet nutsack lovin' of Geek-King Apatow. As for me, I'll go back to wistfully looking at my baseball jersey hanging on the wall, wishing for a time long since past, where men were men, critics were pussies that couldn't hit curve balls, and I accidentally impregnated the girl of your dreams.

    MiraJeff, Ryan...

by and large: baseball hardly qualifies as a sport, and geeks don't get the hot girls. Alpha males rule (literally), and being able to hit a curve ball means you either weren't athletic or man enough to play football.

    MiraJeff & Ryan

    by thebigchill

MiraJeff, having played baseball for much of my life and am still doing so in college, I can argue both for and against the fact that baseball players are athletes. We prepare for those 90 foot sprints as much as anyone else. I can agree that baseball is terribly boring, but in all those minutes that you go without seeing a play in the field you still have to be ready for it to happen, which requires more focus than in any other sport. Its the perfect balance of athleticism, intelligence, and patience. If there was a sport for geeks, its baseball. Look at Greg Maddux. The guy is a McLovin' on a pitcher's mound.
Anyway, Ryan, you're like every douchebag teammate that I've ever been around, totally vacant from the neck up. You can argue that you have some great life, banging some hot wife whose equally as airheaded as you. Doesn't really matter because it doesn't change the fact that you still find fart jokes funny, really enjoy misogynistic comedy, and still talk about that time Tex rubbed IcyHot in Scrappy's jock and then went on to rail the girl that he was hitting on at the bar that night.
Being parts of both geekdom as an English major focusing on Creative Writing and of 'alpha male' position being a pitcher and utility man, its clear that girls are more in awe of the nice, intelligent, and funny guy aspect, not the raw meat, obscenity spewing, jock scratching physicality. Go back to talking about your glory days and avoid comedy that more often than not resonates with a wider audience.

    Oh... and Ryan...

What exactly is your definition of funny? I've yet to see any sort of evidence that makes you a credible source in anyway. In fact, all you've done is point your baseball bat at everything Apatow and call it shit without telling us what exactly makes it shit? Is it that they are don't have an alpha male figure? Is it the fact that your kind isn't represented? If thats the case then I guess you've basically missed the point on the entire history of comedy, because in order for something to be funny, the lesser person has to come out on top. Pretty sure that has been the comedic formula since its inception. And I'm glad you found your accidental impregnation of the girl of someone else's dreams to be something to brag about, hopefully you'll be there to high five the father of your sixteen year old daughter's child.
