Jake Lloyd and ENDER'S GAME'

Published at:  May 06, 1999 1:19:01 AM CDT

You know what folks, my entire impression of Jake Lloyd changed when I made a fun vocal connection with the lad. For those of you that love the movie SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, take a listen at Barooni the Genie (as played by Richard Eyer). I find their voices EXTREMELY close, and as a result... I'm dying to hear and see the rest of our Anakin's performance (The Read Along CD STORYBOOK has lots of dialogue and sound effects and WOWZERS) But anyway, on to the subject at hand. ENDER'S GAME. Will this become a real live project? Will it? I don't know. I haven't heard too much about it. The various drafts of the script have made the rounds, but this is certainly a new development (at least to my knowledge) and is a possibly fascinating avenue for young Jake Lloyd to take. I know he has a drama up next, but after that.... Will it be ENDER'S GAME? Come on Barooni, make it so....

a
little bit over a week ago, i went to a Tower book signing outside of
Sacramento featuring Orson Scott Card, the genius scribe behind Ender's
Game, among other great sci-fi and fantasy novels. now, i am sure that
you have heard lots of rumors about this movie. i don't know about all
those. i only know what Orson Scott Card said.

in the past he had written several drafts of the script. it took him
a while to find a good producer, because most of them wanted to turn
Ender from 6 to 16 and add a love interest. Card wanted to keep the
Ender 6, so he worked on a couple of scripts that placed the emotional
focus from Ender to the supporting cast, specifically, Mazor Rackhem
(sorry, if i spelled it wrong. I don't have the book with me. a sin
for sure). however, though he liked the script more than the Dawson's
Creek meets Wing Commander, he still wasn't satisfied.

>{? patience is a virtue, and patience paid off for Orson Scott Card.

not much earlier before he had the book signing, he met with Jake
Lloyd. without a doubt, your spy network have sent you rumors of this
before. it is no longer a rumor. Card called Lloyd brilliant, an
amazing kid for his age (much like Ender.) Lloyd is a big fan of Ender
and really wants to play the part. after May 19th, Card reminded us,
there will be an international child movie star: Jake Lloyd. when he
spoke with us, Card was on page 42 of his new draft with Ender as the
focus. the way he writes, i am sure he is much further at this time.
he predicted that the movie could possibly be out at Summer 2000.

after reflecting on the situation, although Lloyd will be a child
superstar, it is doubtful that there are many movies at this time that
would feature him as a character with as much emotional depth as Ender.
if this deal was done, Lloyd's future career could be sealed. we
should pray that all goes well.

also, Scott revealed that a new novel, Ender's Shadow, will soon be
released. this book takes place at the same time as Ender's Game, and
is from the perspective of Bean. Card would love for this book to be
picked up at as a movie at the same time so they could film both
back-to-back, before the actor's hit puberty!

by order of the high council, i took a new name, thanks to a certain
spy who turned to higher calling. you can call me Nichodemus.

    The ULTIMATE Coolness

    by anakin rocks

Well, I heard the same info from Scott Card at a book signing on the East Cost. He said nothing was definite but that it looked good. I have not had a single doubt about Jake Lloyd & the first trailer just sealed my opinion. Frankly I think a lot of the advance worry stems from the fact that Mr. Lloyd is young. As a teacher of young children, I know very well the emotional depth and great skill that kids posess. Jake Lloyd looks to be a fantastic actor (I'll see for myself in a matter of hours). Ender's Game is one of my very favorite books & I am so happy to see it fall into such capable hands, this would be the ultimate coolness. -John

    not cool, totally KICK ASS!!!

    by campino

Sorry, I just really hope this movie gets made. It's such an awesome story, and should make a really great film (as long as Freddie Prinze, Jr. is kept as far away as possible). Now we just have to hope that Jake Lloyd won't be typecast as a sci-fi only actor.

The number of great books that should be made into movies is incredible, this is great news, let's just hope it doesn't end up like Dune.

8 Years,... Eight years since I first read this book, and all that time I have been waiting, just waiting for it to be made into a film. Now don't get me wrong I love films as much as the rest of you but I have to say that this is one the very, very few books that I have always thought SHOULD be made into a movie. The story is just so simple and yet deep that it just screams out to be filmed, I'm just glad that the script is being written by Card himself. Thankyou for making my day.

    Cinescape Scooped This!

    by darth_bane

This is old news! Here's a Cinescape Online report from March 22: "The movie adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Hugo and Nebula award-winning novel Ender's Game might have fallen off the radar recently, but that doesn't mean the project is dead. An anonymous source tells the Insider that the script is undergoing final polishes as we speak, with Card seeking out a director who will remain true to the source material. Furthermore, my source indicates that Card has talked with none other than The Phantom Menace's fringe-haired moppet Jake Lloyd about playing the title character. Set in a future where the human race is threatened by a hostile alien species, Ender's Game tells the tale of boy genius Andrew "Ender" Wiggin. In response to the alien threat, the military breeds child prodigies and trains them to be soldiers from birth. One such soldier is the isolated Ender, who, separated from his family, struggles to remain true to his values while rapidly surpassing his peers with his combat skills."

    Scooped?

    by clarkgoble

Like the other guy says, who cares who wrote it first? The info has been on IMDB for about a month now, which is before Cinescape. Of course IMDB isn't the most accurate of sources - but still. Like the other guy says, this site gets the most interesting stuff eventually and I like it's format better than the more AP News style of other sites. It's more personable here.

whoo!! Yeah!! This is some of the best news in millennia!!

    by stardust8

Yes!! With Ender's Game being the best written word of any form in existence, and written in a style that can be fluently turned into a positively brilliant film, I am far more excited about this than any other film project currently in development, 'cept LotR. Not only that, when it comes to dramatic roles(Anakin, Ender), I believe that Lloyd can be as good, no, wait, make that BETTER than a child actor, any one, you name it! And the sequel stuff is great too!! Because it sounds as if it will have that style like Ender's Game, not that over-religous stuff in the other sequels. The other sequels were beyond awful!! The only thing that even remotely makes me appreciate any of the sequels is that without Speaker, there would be no Ender's Game.

    Jake Lloyd's age?

    by pdaddy

Well, I'd just like to add my voice to the previous expressed excitement for this project. One thing, though: If OSC really does want to keep Ender 6, I don't know if Jake Lloyd will be the best choice. Isn't he 11 or something? When that voice starts cracking, he'll make a fairly unconvincing 6 year old....

    Jake Lloyd's actually 9

    by stardust8

That voice won't start cracking till this movie's in the can, dude :)

However, I just wanted to bring up another point : what about this film's RATING?? There is definately some "R" material in here, guys, and yet the film is centered entirely around kids. Heck, some kids in the movie might not be allowed to see it!! But to trim it down to PG-13 would be a travesty. Another case for a rating between pg-13 and R(I'm thinkin' PG-15 or PG-16. The Matrix would fit under this rating)

    Ender - Lucas Black

    by kc

Back when I first heard about the possibility of Ender's becoming a film the first name that leapt into my head was Lucas Black. Star of both Slingblade and American Gothic he certainly could carry a film. Unfortunately he was already a little long in the tooth and by now is I'm sure in the throes of puberty. (Not to mention the strong southern accent which would make casting Peter & Valentine a real chore) It's a shame though, I hate to see a great story squandered on an actor who is merely ok.

    Easy Zero-G

    by megatron

I don't think that the zero-g wargames would be difficult at all. It would require either extensive CG, or the old suspended from a cable shot from below trick, a lot of great editing, and tons of blue screen, or all of these used together, but as good as CG has gotten, and as amazingly effective as blue screening is nowadays (computer compositing) I don't think that any of this would be a problem, especially with the kind of budget that this film would require anyway.

    by carlos

Card will be edged slowly out of the loop while some jerk off studio exec takes over and then the entire project will fall into ruin. Do not make this movie. I don't trust Hollywood at all to do it justice.

    Ender

    by atarijawa

While I would really love to see
this movie I really don't think
it would end up being anything
like the book. I'm sure they
would drop the Peter as Locke and
    Valentine as Demosthenes(sp?)
part of the story. They should
use the kid from Simon Birch as
Ender. Now that would be cool. I
also don't think Speaker for the
Dead would be an adequate sequel
    but this Enders Shadow novel
    seems pretty interesting. How
about a movie based on the dark
tower series by Steven King? The
    gunslinger would be really cool
to see in a celluloid format!

    Non-happy-Ender

    by lord shell

I think Ender's Game finale is so dark, that it would never make it into a Hollywood movie. There's no "Stand up and cheer" and the end of THIS book. It's far more an introspective morality play (i.e.- the studio execs will want to change it because the test audiences found it a 'downer'.) Probably best to let it live on in it's present literary form. A pity.

    Lloyd not officially cast yet

    by clarkgoble

I posted the info from here (with a link) over to an LDS Lit mailing list I belong to. Someone asked Card about it yesterday in New York at a book signing. According to her Card said that Lloyd hasn't signed in yet, but is looking good. She's read the new Ender book and says it is fabulous. I hope so since the last two were only medicore, in my opinion. I think Card's work has really gone down hill the past few years. (i.e. what he did with the fantastic Alvin Maker series)

Jake Lloyd: Fine actor or poop-snot?

    by jimmer72

While I'm perfectly willing to believe that Jake Lloyd will do just fine in EPISODE I, I just have to ask... has anyone seen this kid interviewed? Holy moley, is he irritating. (And while I think of it, whatever happened to DANNY Lloyd, of THE SHINING? Has this guy been in anything else recently?)

    Torn

    by anton_sirius

Isn't anyone else worried about Orson's ability to write a decent screenplay? I hope to Goddess I'm wrong, but his literary style doesn't seem like it would translate well to film. He has this wonderful gift for digressing into obscure backwaters of the plot, be they theological or anthropological or philosophical, that would be absolutely ruinous in a screenplay. Stuff that would make 2001 look like a Road Runner cartoon in comparison. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. If done right Ender could be the kind of film that changes lives. The book certainly is. But I honestly think Orson would be better off finding someone else to write the script. Someone who doesn't have quite the emotional attachment to the material, who can make the decisions necessary to create the best possible Ender ON SCREEN. Let Orson produce it instead- and spend his energy fighting the constant studio battles that will no doubt arise.
