Rest In Peace Roy Scheider

Published at:  Feb 10, 2008 8:48:39 PM CST

Quint here. I don't know what to say. I'll probably ramble a bit, but I'm still reeling from this... I'd heard that Roy Scheider was battling cancer, but I thought he had control of it. I've seen him pop up on TV and he looked great... strong, intimidating... full of life. He died this weekend.

Of course JAWS is my favorite movie and Roy Scheider was a big part of that. Quint's a great character played colorfully by Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss brought a lot of sarcastic humor to Hooper, but those guys don't come into the movie in any major way until reel 2 or 3. If Scheider hadn't been the likable everyman the audience wouldn't have stuck around for the shark action and a crucial element to the chemistry of Quint, Hooper and Brody would have gone missing.

His work outside of JAWS is great, too. I'm thinking particularly of the film that got him the role of Chief Brody, William Friedkin's '70s masterpiece THE FRENCH CONNECTION. He was a big part of '70s crime with French Connection and The Seven Ups and Marathon Man, but my personal favorite non-JAWS related film is another Friedkin flick, a remake of the classic THE WAGES OF FEAR, titled SORCERER. It's one of the hands down most intense films ever made. Scheider played a man transporting volatile nitroglycerin through the bumpy jungle roads of South America.

Other memorable works include 2010, ALL THAT JAZZ, KLUTE, BLUE THUNDER, NAKED LUNCH and so much more.

I never had the chance to meet Roy Scheider, but I know many who did and to the person they spoke well of him. By all accounts he was a man of deep kindness and even deeper intelligence. He died this afternoon at the age of 75.

My thoughts are with Mr. Scheider's friends, family and fans. I hope you all join me tonight in a toast to Roy. Let's drink to our legs.

This is like hearing that some one you went to high-school with, and only shared a few classes with has died. You remember them, and you can place their face, and remember some enjoyable times with them, but never made them a big part of your life.

I just showed my daughter "Jaws" for the first time two weeks ago, and she loved it. He's in so many great movies and also in a lot of movies that aren't considered great but that I love. I'm sure his presence is a big part of why. What a loss.

Roy Scheider was an awesome actor. For me, the parts that stood out the most were Jaws, Blue Thunder, and 2010 ("Something wonderful."). He was a great actor and I will miss him. I had no idea he was ill, so this comes as quite a shock. To his family and friends who might be reading this, please know that he is in my family's thoughts and prayers and that he touched us in wonderful ways with his acting. Thank you, Roy. Rest in peace.

"Marathon Man" is one of my favorite movies - Roy as Doc Levy, he stole the movie - first depiction of a homosexual bad ass professional killer thats a "good guy" ive ever seen - not seen one since - he stole fucking that movie - a whole movie about Doc Levy woulda been very cool - Roy is a fantastic actor - he made "2010" watchable - he made "Jaws" believable - "The Seven Ups" is one of the 3 best cop thrillers ever made (alongside "Bullit" and "The French Connection") - id argue it had the best car chase - my favorite anyway - Roy gave his movies a realness factor - this news really does suck - the formal lunch scene in "Marathon Man" where Doc exposes Elsa as a phony is fucking brilliant - classic - this guy was a real actor - one of our best - rest in peace

What remnants of my youthful exuberance just died too.

I just turned 34 and the only time i'm happy is when i think back to the 80s when i was growing up, riding my bmx around and watching all those amazing flicks.

Everything sucks now. Music and movies.

I was hoping to god they would finally make another Jaws flick. With Roy's death...they will remake it now.

All this gen does it remake and rehash old movies and music.

Holy Shit is this sad news !!

    by picardsucks

Just watched Marathon Man again last week. What a terrific actor !!
Everything he was in he brought a quiet dignity to the roll. From Jaws to French Connection to Blue Thunder. He was the reason to watch 2010. He could play the commanding presense as well as the reluctant hero. Him, Sean Connery, Clint, Pacino, Deniro, Jack, Shatner. One of the last of the real men's men, That whole generation of terrific actors just pisses me off even more that now Hollywood only churns out these cardboard abercrombie prettyboys who don't appear to ever had to shave or thrown a punch and expects us to see them as believable and they only comparable actors with that kind of macho gravitas are all imports from the UK or Australia. Think I'll go watch Jaws again.

The man could act. He got his role in the "French Connection" when William Friedkin saw him in an off-broadway play as a cigar smoking nun(!!!!) and gave him the role as Popeye Doyle's partner. I'm sure we're all sorry to see such a great actor leave us. R.I.P.

His iconic role will always be Jaws, but he's just as great in French Connection and Sorcerer. The latter, btw, is a rare case of an American remake being just as good as the foreign original. Not to knock Clouzot or anything. Sleep well, man.

I don't know what to say...

    by cheif brody

...or where to begin. Wow. Like a sucker punch to the gut. I am so saddened to learn of Roy's passing. Thanks for the very nice send off, Quint...and the use of that iconic photo.
Jaws was, for me, the first time cinema grabbed me by the throat and let me see how viseral the movie going experience can be. If you ask someone what Jaws was about...the answer is almost always "a shark". But that's where they miss the boat. Jaws was about a reluctant hero named Martin Brody...a man who lived on an island who hated the ocean....a cop who grew tired of all the crime in the big city...and sought a nice cushy job in the sleepy resort town of Amity. Little did he know, that nature would provide him with a challenge that made the dirty city street crime he left behind feel like a cake walk.
Roy Scheider embodied the role of Chief Brody, and captured the fear, desperation and triumph of a man who only wanted to deal with the local karate class breaking fence posts and keeping the city safe with the help of one lone deputy and an assistant named Polly.
Because Bruce the Shark was constantly misfiring, and was unable to perform 80% of the tasks the script called for...the movie was transformed from what could have been a bad "monster movie" about a man eating shark...into a compelling character study about the men fated to killing the beast.
Had Bruce actually worked as planned, we would not have gotten the well drawn, carefully crafted characters that ended up making the film the classic that it is today. And Mr. Scheider was a big reason for its tremendous success.
The scene where Mrs. Kintner slaps Chief Brody's face...when, in reality, she should have been slapping the face of the man standing next to him...the greedy, and repugnant Mayor Vaughn...was priceless...and made so much of an impact due to Roy's understated work. I also think back to the scene at the dinner table, where Brody shares a quiet moment making faces at his son...who is mimicing his father's movements. That scene goes overlooked...and it's a shame...because that's the type of scenes where Roy turned Brody into a living, breathing person...the man we know is just doing the best he can to insure eveyone's safety...and his family. The man who conquers his fears and faces the problem head on...with the help of an old salt...and a wise-cracking young oceanographer.
By the time Scheider delivers his famous "Smile you son of a bitch" line...and the triumph of finally destroying his nemesis...Roy's pitch perfect performance is realized...and you feel as though a friend has just gotten a demon off his back...not just a movie character.
I saw Jaws 16 times the summer of '75...many times staying in the theater for the next show. I even snuck an old cassette recorder in with me and recorded the entire film so I could listen to it as I dozed off at night. Since that summer...I've seen Jaws dozens of times...maybe hundreds...I can't tune past it when I find it playing on TBS or AMC. And Roy's reprisal of Brody in Jaws II was the only reason to watch that movie. It was like meeting up with an old friend.
RIP, old friend. Thank you for being such a big part of my life these past 30+ years. Hopefully you and Robert Shaw are having a big laugh together right now. Thanks for the memories, Roy Scheider.
"Can you do that, Martin?"...."I can do anything....I'm the Chief of Police".

After watching his performance in Blue Thunder, I was thrilled he was taking on the role of Heywood Floyd in 2010. I re-read Arthur C. Clark's novel again recently (better and more detailed than the movie), and I could still imagine Mr. Scheider as Dr. Heywood Floyd (as well as in 2061). I don't know if there would have been a movie version of Odyseey 3, but seeing Scheider would have been worth the cost of admission. My condolences go out to his family and friends. by broosethescharuk

...My love for Jaws is no secret to others who know and love it. In 1975 I was 10 years old. I saw Jaws at the drive-in. It changed everything about the way I thought of movies, actors, water, sharks, and my own mortality (thank you very much Alex Kintner). Roy Scheider became one of my favorite actors at a time when I was only just starting to even be able to acknowledge that the guys playing my heroes were real and figures I idolized were made up characters (it was the '70's -- no dvd's or interweb machines to remind a boy of these facts day in and day out). The same definitely goes for Robert Shaw, but -- unlike Scheider -- he always intimidated me. Not to mention, he didn't last even to the end of the '70's, so he hasn't been around throughout the ensuing years of my life, popping up in movie after movie as an old familiar face. Roy Scheider felt like my dad or something. I never saw a performance by him that I didn't like, but he will always be Chief Brody to me. "You're not going to do this aboard the ship are you, Mr. Quint?"

Roy Scheider's passing is a goddamn shame. Easily one of the most underrated and under used actors in the past twenty years. He really shoulda been in the same category as someone like Dustin Hoffman, Bob De Niro, or Gene Hackman, but he never kept up the heat from the late 70s. And it wasn't that he didn't have the talent either - I'd argue he was as good as/even better than the three above. will be sorely missed...that's some bad hat harry...

    The Seven-Ups: Great car chase

    by jbs0209

Via NetFlix's download service I saw Roy in The Seven-Ups.
While an otherwise OK film, the car chase scene was one of the best I have ever seen. And, the end of the chase made me cringe.
Very good. Watch it if you can.

Sad news indeed. I've always loved Scheider and he was one of the first actors I learned to recognize when I was a wee lad. Like Michael Caine, he was one of those actors who, no matter how shitty the movie was he was in, would escape unscathed and unsullied.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I love 2010. A lot of people hold the mistaken notion that it somehow diminishes 2001 by its very existence, but I disagree. It's a completely different kind of movie and works very well on its own, in no small measure due to Scheider's great performance.

Other favorites include Marathon Man (why can't modern thrillers capture the sinister atmosphere that so many 1970s thriller seemed to do with ease?), Cohen & Tate (why isn't this on DVD?) and The Fourth War (crap movie, but unforgettable Scheider performance).

    R.I.P.

    by lyghthouse

Its after Quint comes down inside the boat and destroys the radio with a baseball bat. Then Roy gets all pissed saying "Well thats great! Thats just great!" and then he starts hitting the radio with the bat as well. I don't know why, but I always thought the way he did that scene was hilarious. Besides his work in Jaws, he did some great work on the French Connection, 2010(which I think is a great movie) and All That Jazz. I'm gonna miss him.

Jaws is the greatest movie of all time for 4 reasons

    by theycallmemrglass

Schieder. Shaw. Dreyfuss. Spielberg. No other film in history had 3 actors playing off each other with such vitality and intesity as here. Schieder was perfect. He was my childhood hero who killed the monster that frightened me. He was the fatherly protector. I only saw Jaws for the hundresth time a few days ago. 2010 is my second favourite Scheider film and then Marathon Man. Cool character to the end. RIP Roy Scheider.

Never got the level of admiration that he deserved...

    by sledge hammer

He truly was one of the greatest actors to emerge and make his mark during the 70's, but while Pacino, Hoffman, DeNiro and Nicholson found true fame, Scheider instead had a workmanlike, though still impressive, career. But unlike all of those actors, who faltered at times in the coming years, or who seemed to get bored or rest on their laurels at times, Scheider was always top class and gave his all to whatever role he was playing. He was one of those actors that you could always rely on for a quality performance, no matter the film or the role. With an industry now seemingly more focussed on fame than on acting, we won't see his like again, but at least we'll always have the films and performances that he left us with to revisit and to remind us what real acting is all about. Rest in peace Roy Scheider, and thanks for all the great memories.

Man, sad, sad news. Roy Scheider was definitely undervalued by the tools that run Hollywood, a masterful character actor. His performance in Jaws is real to me, having seen Jaws at an early age I always thought it was cool when Police Chief Brody would pop up in other films. Thanks for everything Roy, and hopefully the Academy will give you a posthumous Oscar for your life's work.

Some of my favourite lesser known Scheider roles...

    by sledge hammer

Cohen & Tate: his performance in that film, opposite Adam Baldwin, was just amazing. The Fourth War: silly premise that's saved by two amazing performances by Jurgen Prochnow and especially Roy Scheider.Naked Lunch: One of Cronenberg's masterpieces in my opinion, and Scheider was truly creepy as Dr Benway. The Russia House, where Scheider, for my money, stole pretty much every scene he was in. 52 Pickup, one of the last of the bare-knuckled Elmore Leonard film adaptations, before Leonard films became all slickened and hollywoodized, where Scheider just owned the screen. The Myth Of Fingerprints: Roy Scheider's performance as the head of the family was, along with Julianne Moore, the best thing about this strongly acted ensemble drama.Romeo Is Bleeding: An under appreciated film (that I always loved personally), and an under-rated performance by Scheider in his supporting role as a mafia don.The Seven-Ups: One of the most unjustly over-looked and nigh on forgotten films of the 70's, and Roy Scheider really was top of his game in this one. Oh, and the car chase *is* better than the ones in Bullitt, The French Connection and To Live & Die In LA. Check it out if you ever get a chance, and you love 70's crime.Last Embrace: Not a perfect film, but still a quality old school thriller from Jonathan Demme that benefitted greatly from a superb central performance from Roy Scheider.
Of course in addition to all those he was of course fantastic in all the roles that he's most often remembered for: Jaws, Sorcerer, The French Connection, Marathon Man, All That Jazz, Klute, 2010, Blue Thunder, and even SeaQuest DSV. That's quite a legacy to leave behind, and one we're all richer for having experienced.

Too bad his later career was DTV and itty bitty supporting roles. I forget why he left Seaquest. I wasn't sure if it's what he wanted, or they wanted to try and inject new life into the show. At least they replaced him with another great actor, Michael Ironside. Gotta love it in Blue Thunder when he flipped the chopper, and blew the crap out of Malcolm McDowell.

"Smile ya sonofabitch!" is a legendary line. He was the best thing in 2010 and even brought gravitas to The Punisher with his cameo. I feel robbed of a great talent. I thought he'd be around for another 20 years, giving more great performances. RIP Roy.

This truly sucks. Scheider was great in everything I saw him in, but Jaws has always been in my top three. Hell, I even liked Jaws 2 because he was in it. It's like losing one of your cool uncles or something. Damn. Miss ya, Roy. You were a class act. Now where's that "Shark is Still Working" DVD? It'll end up being one of the last movie-version interviews with him in it. And Peter Benchley.

    by jack burton

I know he had cancer but like many of you Scheider was one of my favorite actors and this just kills. He was one of those guys that just isn't the norm in Hollywood any more and it's a damn tragedy. That great 70's grit and natural charisma that just owned the screen. Like many folks posting on here Jaws is my favorite movie and I don't say that lightly. Seeing it at the drive in with my parents is one of my very first memories and it lead to a life long fascination with sharks as well as admiration for the cast and Spielberg. And a huge part of my love for that movie is due entirely to Roy Scheider's performance. Thank you for the memories Roy, you will be missed.

Had a friend in college who got his autograph...

    by kid z

...My friend and his girlfriend went to a movie in Manhatten. The previews were going and in walks Roy Scheider and his wife (?) and they sit right next to my friend. Guy's a real autograph hound but he was nervous to be sitting right next to Roy Scheider... Sherif Brody from Jaws! So he fidgets for about a hour, trying to summon the courage to ask Scheider for an autograph or something, but what to do?... everyone is watching the movie. Finally, my friend's girlfriend just grabs his notebook and *whap!* slaps it down into the lap of a very shocked Roy Scheider and loudly asks him, "Mr. Scheider, could you sign this? My boyfriend here won't stop twitching!" And he sort of smirked and signed it! "Stop twitching! Roy Scheider" LOL! Didn't even get up and move to another row either. Great guy, great actor... gonna miss him.

Another instance of a wonderful actor not recognized for his wonderful body of work. I hope he gets a long ovation at the Oscars, 2 noms do not do this man's resume justice. Jaws 2

    by neomyers

While Jaws 2 is not the amazing, groundbreaking film that Jaws is, I think Roy Scheider's work in it was great. In the first Jaws, he's the new guy--he sees this problem and he tries to act on it, only to be thwarted by political interests. Once it's undeniable, he acts and brings the whole Coast Guard down on the place. He faces his fear of the water to stop the menace at its source. In Jaws 2 Brody's in a different place. He's the town hero, everyone knows him, he's got power -- but another shark shows up, this one a little sneakier. This one doesn't kill children in front of the whole town, but Brody knows. Everything he gained between the first and second movie is slowly lost as he's made out to be a crank, a nut. He's no longer a hero, he's fired, and worse yet, his two sons are out on the ocean with the shark that only he knows is there. Scheider played Brody a little nuts in Jaws 2 and it works. He's all alone, basically, and at the end when he's facing down the giant shark in a little life raft armed only with an oar and a power cable, he's yelling and shouting like an insane guy--he plays it like Brody snapped a little bit. SO...is Jaws 2 Jaws? No. But I think Scheider's role in it was great and the movie wasn't all bad.

I saw Jaws 2 in theaters before I saw the original Jaws. I loved it. Loved Scheider in it. He made a mediocre picture great. I love the scene near the beginning at the pool opening with his wife and they're like, "You wanna get out of here...go home, get drunk and fool around?" Scheider really gave life to Brody, and with Loraine Gary, they acted out a very believable, 'real' marriage. "You're too damn drunk. You're too damn drunk..."

he always gave it his best effort. I saw him in an interview when Jaws 2 came out, and he admitted that he did the role "at the point of a gun." But he didn't phone it in, as much as he must have discouraged by the final result. Rest in peace, Roy - you've earned it.

    by bringingsexyback

Of course Jaws 2 didn't measure up to the first, but Moonwatcher is right. I really saw that movie as nearly on par with the first because of Scheider. You can tell he does give it his all, and not for a moment did he seem down about being in it (and if you hadn't mentioned that "point of a gun" comment, I couldn't have seen it). I wish he had more roles in his career that had kept him in the limelight but certainly he's made more of a lasting contribution than many many lesser actors.

He will be missed. He was the only reason I even bothered with SeaQuest for the short time that I did. Singularly cool and ballsy aspect of the recent Punisher remake. I love 2010, and I think the primary reason is because of Scheider. The sequel couldn't match the mystery, the music or the visual dexterity of the original, so what Scheider brought to it-a humanity and a warmth was the only real thing that distinguished it as something special apart from the original. I think Ill pull that one out and watch it tonight.

That was some bad hat, Harry

    by napoleon park

Roy Scheider, 75, died Sunday of complications from a staph infection at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, where he had been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma for the past two years. Roy Scheider began working as an actor on "The Edge of Night" in 1962. He worked on television until the end of that decade, making his way into films with an uncredited role in "Paper Lion," then getting noticed as Jane Fonda's pimp in "Klute" (1971)That same year both Scheider and co-star Gene Hackman became stars with the release of The French Connection. While I hold to my opinion that Steve mc.Queen's "Bullitt" had the best car chase sequence in film history, "The French Connection" certainly comes in a close second. Scheider was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the film but lost... to Hackman. He varied his career between TV and both foreign and domestic films, most notably "The Seven-Ups" (1973) until landing the lead in Steven Spielberg's breakthrough film "Jaws" (1975). While the film is considered a classic in the horror and monster movie genres, Scheider approached his role with a comedic touch that made his character all the more likable and vulnerable. He delivered the films best known line "You're going to need a bigger boat." Fans of the TV series "House, MD" will want to watch the monthy TBS reruns of "Jaws" with an ear open to catch the line "That's some bad hat, Harry" (the tag line of the "House" production company.) Jaw's is considered the first movie in the era of "blockbuster films", the first film to earn over $100,000,000.00 at the box office.Following "Marathon Man" (1976), he made a lesser known masterpiece of suspense, "Sorcerer" 91977) Director William Friedkin was hot off of "The Exorcist", Scheider was hot off of "Jaws", and the teamed up for a tale of a group of crooks who make a seriously bad career move (robbing a church) and compound it with an even worse move (killing a priest with a mob-connected brother.) having offended both God and The Mob, the men hide out in a small south American village and are hired to transport a truckload of unstable nitroglyvcerine across twisting jungle roads and decaying rope bridges, all to the tune of a very effective soundtrack by the synthesizer group Tangerine Dream. He went the sequel route the next year with "Jaws II", essentially a remake of the original. The following year he performed one of the roles he was proudest of, playing "Joe Gideon" in the roman-a-clef Bob Fosse auto-bio-pic "All That Jazz" (1979) - a role that earned him his second Oscar nomination. In '83 he starred in "Blue Thunder," in '84 had a key role in "2010: The Year We Make Contact," and in '85 hosted a first season episode of Saturday Night Live.In 1986 he had the lead role in John Frankenheimer's film of Elmore Leonard's story "52 Pick-Up". This gritty hard--boiled crime-noir actioner falls into the same "kill the crooks" genre as the "Death Wish" and "Dirty Harry" films, but Scheider's character is a cunning businessman who responds to being framed for murder and then blackmailed by for the most part tricking his enemies into killing each other, ala the old TV version of "Mission Impossible." The movie exploited the public's then current fascination with "snuff films" by having the bad guys film the killing of the girl they caught Scheider having an affair with (with his own gun) and then showing him the film. The movie has an extraordinary cast and adult film fans will want to look for familiar faces during the party scene. His next decades worth of films included "Night Game" (1989) and "Naked lunch" (1991)From 1993 to 1995 he tried his hand at television again as the lead on "Seaquest DSV".His three dozen film and televison projects after that included "The Peacekeeper," "Rainmaker," "Daybreak" and "The Punisher".His final film roles will be appearing in 2008 - "Dark Honeymoon" is completed and "Iron Cross" is in post-production. =Napoleon.Park= obits:http://tinyurl.com/ypn2cs http://tinyurl.co/2gw84t

Next to Jaws, it might be the best thing Scheider has done. It was intense, and for being a remake of sort of Wages of Fear, it ended up being very much it's own thing and one of the more intriguing films in Friedkin's career. Seaquest

    by lina2008

His fans remember him on Seaquest which started out well, but began taking a turn for the worst in the second season. Roy wasn't too happy about some of the storylines and decided he wanted off the show. Michael Ironside is not a great actor, he's not even a good one, but he was the guy who took over as captain in the third season and Roy Scheider made some guest appearances because it was in his contract. After watching SEaquest all over again last week, I now know why Roy decided on leaving. The scripts in season 2 were just a bit too much. Nonetheless he was an awesome actor who kicked ass on any project he worked on.

Sorry, I just thought that after everyone and his dog would have used the "Smile you son of a..." I'd go for the lesser used line. Last film I saw him in was The Punisher ( no bad mouthing please, whether you like this film or not is irrelevant in this case) and Mr Scheider was as always, instantly likeable, warm inviting and friendly - but you knew he could be a badass if needed. That's what I loved about him - he was like the ultimate Dad/ Father figure.

    OK, Mucho Amor for Sorcerer

    by bswise

My vote for Friedkin's absolute best. Also love Wages of Fear, but Sorcerer seemed so vivid and true, with realism bleeding into madness. The haunting soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, the washed out cinematography of Dick Bush
John M. Stephens, the hardcore jungle location shooting (and real oil fires) all lend to the powerful mis en scene. The largely silent opening vignets also really set the tone and give the film a truly international flavor, like you are seeing the state of a fallen world in 1977. Of course, it's Scheider's performance that anchors the film, as sure as Yves Montand anchors the original. The final scene where he has one last dance, while the hitmen arrive outside, is as haunting as anything you see before it. BTW, really digging the AICN lovefest here.

    by zardoz

Jaws is by far, one of my all-time favorite movies. And Roy's "Martin Brody" is one of the best characters on film. Ever. His performance was so good in that film. And he was brilliant in "All That Jazz". He was nominated for an Oscar for that role, but he didn't win it. He should have won it. (sorry, Dustin!) For those two films alone he will forever be in the Heavenly Hollywood pantheon. So long Roy, we will miss you...

    His films with Friedkin

    by samuel fulmer

Of course Jaws is his best film, but I also really like the two films he did with Friedkin (The French Connection and Sorceror). Supossedly there's going to be a new Sorceror DVD sometime soon. I think the reason he was such a good actor was that he was so believable in the parts he played. When he acted, he seemed like he was playing a real person, not just a character.

Sad that he's no longer part of our 'world'.

    by cpt kirks 2pay

Everytime I see Jaws, he's no longer 'here' with us now. All that time growing up with him, now he's gone. Jaws does indeed feel more empty. He did seem like a good hearted guy off camera too, and I did wonder when I watched him in other stuff, even crud like The Fourth War, whether or not, there was a greater actor in him than I even knew, no matter how good I thought he was already. Again, as workshed said, he seemed to be underrated. I mean, check this out, in the DeNiro biography, it said that for a long long time, Scheider was pinned down to play Michael in The Deer Hunter, and that he and Michael Cimino were very keen for him to play the part. The reason why he couldn't is an incredible irony, is that the role which brought him original fame, was the role which held him back from achieving perhaps the fame that he really wanted - and that was Martin Brody. For even though Jaws made him a star, the fact that he was contractually obligated or something, to star in Jaws 2 or else - meant that he couldn't free himself for The Deer Hunter, which Scheider is said to be well pissed off and angry at ever since, or something. As exceptional as DeNiro was as Michael, one can't help but wonder how much Scheider would have shocked us all, with how amazing HE would have been to. Meanwhile, I'll go check out Sorcerer. You are missed, Roy! See you on the other side.

is a worthy conclusion to his career. Listed in 'post-production'- IMDB summary:

"Joseph, (ROY SCHEIDER) a retired New York cop, who witnessed the massacre of his family in Poland 1941, travels to Nuremberg to visit his son Ronnie (SCOTT COHEN) having turned his back on him for the last five years for rejecting a promising career in the NYPD and marrying a German woman, Anna (CALITA RAINFORD). No sooner does Joseph attempt to heal the rift with Ronnie, he swears that living in the apartment below under the false name of Shrager (HELMUT BERGER) is the now aging SS Commander who committed the atrocity. With little hope of seeing him stand trial, Joseph talks Ronnie into exacting justice - and vengeance - and together they set out to kill him..."

    Memories of Scheider

    by johnquay

Nice to see so many respectful tributes here for a commanding actor whose performances in so many enduring films will give pleasure for generations to come.

It so happens I graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, Scheider's own alma mater, many years after the man himself, but one year he was the commencement speaker (not the year I graduated, though) and another time he came back to give a talk in the school theater when I was a student (1983), and which I remember clearly. He was very funny and very encouraging to the people in the theater department, showing his love for the place where he'd begun acting, and not putting on any airs at all.

Now let me please be very serious: Scheider died from complications arising from multiple myeloma, a still incurable form of blood cancer, a terrible disease which has touched my immediate family. Please consider making a donation in Scheider's name to either The International Myeloma Foundation (www.myeloma.org) or The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.multiplemyeloma.org). And no I am not affiliated with either group, just someone bearing witness to the effects of this still incurable illness.

Goodbye, Roy Scheider. You were a hell of an actor and thank god we can still see you perform.

he DID start making Deer Hunter, but then backed out after "creative differences." And it just happened at the time that the studio wanted a sequel to Jaws. Scheider didn't want to do that, but they said it would count as 2 movies and thus fulfill his contract with them. I'm glad he did it, because he helped make that movie a lot more than it would have been without him.

Seeing Scheider was always so comforting. I don't think I realized until now just how much he threaded his way through so many of my favorite movies. He really was a great actor and dammit, a real movie star, and it's a career most actors could only dream of. I also wanted to mention his performance in RKO 281. A fun movie about making Citizen Kane. He's the RKO exec working with Welles. And he brings all his humanity and talent to a great part. He was never one of those actors I thought would leave us. Scheider in Deer Hunter = AWESOME

    by prossor

DeNiro did good but i can really picture Scheider as Michael Vronsky with the grounded toughness and stability there.

ACADEMY-AWARD® NOMINEE ROY SCHEIDER’S MISSING SCENE
TO BE DIGITALLY COMPLETED FOR HIS FINAL LEADING ROLE

    IRON CROSS

Film Written & Directed by Joshua Newton and Scheduled to Premiere
at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2008

NEW YORK, NY, February 15, 2008 – Two-time Academy Award® Nominee Roy Scheider, who sadly passed on February 10th, was one key scene shy of completing principal photography for what he hoped would be his great comeback performance in the upcoming revenge thriller IRON CROSS. Discussions are currently in progress with leading digital effects companies to finish the pivotal scene using the latest CGI technology. The feature-length debut of British writer-director Joshua Newton, will launch at the Venice International Film Festival in 2008.

Roy Scheider, widely recognized as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, was nominated for an Oscar® for his extraordinary performance as Detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection, and again for his sparkling portrayal of director Bob Fosse in All That Jazz. Scheider had been featured in more than 50 films; His upcoming credits include Dark Honeymoon (co-starring Daryl Hannah and Eric Roberts), and what is his final leading performance in the Joshua Newton film IRON CROSS.

IRON CROSS tells the story of Joseph, a retired New York police officer, played by Roy Scheider, who witnessed the massacre of his family in Poland in 1941. He travels to Nuremberg to visit his son Ronnie (Scott Cohen - Gilmore Girls, Cashmere Mafia) years after turning his back on him for rejecting a promising career in the NYPD and marrying a local artist, Anna (Calita Rainford - Return to House on Haunted Hill). No sooner does Joseph attempt to heal the rift with Ronnie, when he swears that living in the apartment above, under the false name of Shrager, (Helmut Berger - Ludwig, The Damned, The Godfather Part III) is the now aging SS Commander who committed the atrocity. With little hope of seeing him stand trial, Joseph talks Ronnie into exacting justice - and vengeance - and together they set out to kill him.
“Roy Scheider was one of the most talented and acclaimed actors of his generation. His versatility and riveting presence set him apart and made him the obvious choice to play such a complex, troubled character as Joseph. Roy was extremely passionate about this project and we became close during filming,” said Joshua Newton, writer, director and editor of the film. "He really was a brave man. I admired his fighting spirit and I am honored to have known and worked with him.”
The story is a very personal one for Newton, as it closely mirrors conversations and experiences with his own father Bruno Newton, who passed away last year during filming, and coincidentally like Scheider, from complications caused by myeloma. In memory of both Newton’s father and Scheider, 10% of Newton’s share of the film’s profits will be donated to the International Myeloma Foundation.
