Rest In Peace Roy Scheider
Quint here. I don't know what to say. I'll probably ramble a bit, but I'm still reeling from this... I'd heard that Roy Scheider was battling cancer, but I thought he had control of it. I've seen him pop up on TV and he looked great... strong, intimidating... full of life. He died this weekend.
Of course JAWS is my favorite movie and Roy Scheider was a big part of that. Quint's a great character played colorfully by Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss brought a lot of sarcastic humor to Hooper, but those guys don't come into the movie in any major way until reel 2 or 3. If Scheider hadn't been the likable everyman the audience wouldn't have stuck around for the shark action and a crucial element to the chemistry of Quint, Hooper and Brody would have gone missing.
His work outside of JAWS is great, too. I'm thinking particularly of the film that got him the role of Chief Brody, William Friedkin's '70s masterpiece THE FRENCH CONNECTION. He was a big part of '70s crime with French Connection and The Seven Ups and Marathon Man, but my personal favorite non-JAWS related film is another Friedkin flick, a remake of the classic THE WAGES OF FEAR, titled SORCERER. It's one of the hands down most intense films ever made. Scheider played a man transporting volatile nitroglycerin through the bumpy jungle roads of South America.
Other memorable works include 2010, ALL THAT JAZZ, KLUTE, BLUE THUNDER, NAKED LUNCH and so much more.
I never had the chance to meet Roy Scheider, but I know many who did and to the person they spoke well of him. By all accounts he was a man of deep kindness and even deeper intelligence. He died this afternoon at the age of 75.
My thoughts are with Mr. Scheider's friends, family and fans. I hope you all join me tonight in a toast to Roy. Let's drink to our legs.

RIP Brother
-
I loved it as a kid, even if I didn't understand what the hell it was about. Schneider was a man's man. Rest in peace.
-
what a bummer. didn't even know he was sick.... RIP

This is like hearing that some one you went to high-school with, and only shared a few classes with has died. You remember them, and you can place their face, and remember some enjoyable times with them, but never made them a big part of your life.
-
Roy Scheider was a man's man. His very real warmth and decency shone through in every role he did.
"Catch ya later." -
I don't think any of you knew him well enough to call him "Roy." We're not talking Paris, here. Show some class.
-
He should have taken that part in Deer Hunter.
-
Him, Dreyfus, and Shaw in Jaws?...fuggetaboutit
-
I just showed my daughter "Jaws" for the first time two weeks ago, and she loved it. He's in so many great movies and also in a lot of movies that aren't considered great but that I love. I'm sure his presence is a big part of why. What a loss.
-
Roy Scheider was an awesome actor. For me, the parts that stood out the most were Jaws, Blue Thunder, and 2010 ("Something wonderful."). He was a great actor and I will miss him. I had no idea he was ill, so this comes as quite a shock. To his family and friends who might be reading this, please know that he is in my family's thoughts and prayers and that he touched us in wonderful ways with his acting. Thank you, Roy. Rest in peace.
-
That movie was made only watchable because of his performance.
Also. I havent seen Blue Thunder since the 80's but he is more memorable to me than the helicopter. A great actor and he will be missed. -
Even though he was amazing in Jaws as well as many other films, I have to say he made the greatest impression on me starring in Seaquest. I was a little kid when that show aired and it was a great escape for me. He was an amazing actor. RIP
-
Sad. Before Harrison Ford, he was my first "hero" actor. Such a presence. Miss ya, guy.
-
Chief Martin Brody... One of my all-time favorite great performances. May you rest in peace Mr, Scheider, and give my regards to Robert Shaw when you see him.
-
He was a great, strong, and expressive actor..and a terrific everyman. As Prince Faisal in Lawrence of Arabia said, "what we owe [him] is beyond evaluation."
-
I'm holding it back too. My favorite film of all time is Jaws. It is what made me fall in love with movies. I have seen it over a hundred times and a large part of that is because of the performance of Roy Scheider. So I have to thank you Mr. Scheider wherever you may be for inspiring me to want to be a story teller. Rest in Peace in the hands of God.
-
I always wanted to meet him to talk about his roles over the decades, having grown up with them. RIP Chief...you will be sorely missed.
-
Should be written on his tombstone. Do you think that Darwin the talking dolphin will be at the funeral?
-
I had no clue he was even sick. That just sucks.
-
"Marathon Man" is one of my favorite movies - Roy as Doc Levy, he stole the movie - first depiction of a homosexual bad ass professional killer thats a "good guy" ive ever seen - not seen one since - he stole fucking that movie - a whole movie about Doc Levy woulda been very cool - Roy is a fantastic actor - he made "2010" watchable - he made "Jaws" believable - "The Seven Ups" is one of the 3 best cop thrillers ever made (alongside "Bullit" and "The French Connection") - id argue it had the best car chase - my favorite anyway - Roy gave his movies a realness factor - this news really does suck - the formal lunch scene in "Marathon Man" where Doc exposes Elsa as a phony is fucking brilliant - classic - this guy was a real actor - one of our best - rest in peace
-
Hopefully he'll be buried in the yahd not too fah from dah cahr.
-
You will be missed..."Catch ya later"
-
Jaws and Blue Thunder were two of my favorite movies as a kid. RIP.
-
How sad is his passing.
What remnants of my youthful exuberance just died too.
I just turned 34 and the only time i'm happy is when i think back to the 80s when i was growing up, riding my bmx around and watching all those amazing flicks.
Everything sucks now. Music and movies.
I was hoping to god they would finally make another Jaws flick. With Roy's death...they will remake it now.
All this gen does it remake and rehash old movies and music.
Josh Brolin would make a good Brody - at least he's from Gen X -
I wanna make sure my movie is okay.
-
just last night they played the episode of family guy where he plays himself on a video to teach kids how to poo.
-
I was surprised to see him in Marathon Man. Didn't really buy him as Dustin Hoffman's brother. But him as a cop and a father in Jaws - fantastic. The scene with him and his son copying him at dinner was as powerful as any of the shark scenes.
-
...is on my list of 5 favorite movies. Rest in Peace Joe Gideon.
-
Cancer is such a horrible thing and I'm sure each of us has been affected by it in one way or another. My prayers are with his family right now. RIP Roy
-
...maybe no Jaws remake; but somebody may take another run at SeaQuest DSV... hey if they can bring back Knight Rider and American Gladiators they can bring back anything...
-
an absolute legend. from jaws to seaquest DSV, hes one of those actors that everones knows, they just dont know they know him. Except for us lot, the geeks who care. seeya later roy. you were awsome.
-
I just loved that stuff. Great actor, he'll be missed. -
You will be missed
-
Damn.
-
it had to be said...
-
That was one of my favorite lines from Jaws. Scheider was one of the best character actors in the biz and he will be missed. Have to agree with the guy mentioning his role in "Marathon Man" - he was awesome in that movie.
-
With Brody and his son mimicking one another defines the relationship between father and son to me. Maybe my favorite moment in that flick. He'll be missed.
-
Rest In Peace. I'm really at a loss for any other words...
-
Jaws is in my top ten. Awesome performance. He will be missed.
-
how about his perfromance in that dolly-in/zoom-out shot when the Kintner kid gets eaten... guy just played the heck out of the Brody character... a truly iconic performance.
-
A damn fine actor indeed.
-
Such an endearing actor, and always so cool. I remember as a little kid seeing him onscreen and just liking him immediately. Sad to see him go.
-
You will be missed
-
He's faking his death. Just like Heath Ledger.
-
All I can say is that I'll always remember him for Jaws, 2010 (a damned good role, if you ask me), and, of course, The French Connection. He was a very natural actor.
-
This guy was great.
-
Cheers to you.
-
Damn...I always admired Scheider's work - JAWS, 2010, and THE FRENCH CONNECTION being my personal favorites. He also had one of the most chiseled profiles in all of film. I'm saddened to hear of his passing.R.I.P., Chief.
-
Just watched Marathon Man again last week. What a terrific actor !!
Everything he was in he brought a quiet dignity to the roll. From Jaws to French Connection to Blue Thunder. He was the reason to watch 2010. He could play the commanding presense as well as the reluctant hero. Him, Sean Connery, Clint, Pacino, Deniro, Jack, Shatner. One of the last of the real men's men, That whole generation of terrific actors just pisses me off even more that now Hollywood only churns out these cardboard abercrombie prettyboys who don't appear to ever had to shave or thrown a punch and expects us to see them as believable and they only comparable actors with that kind of macho gravitas are all imports from the UK or Australia. Think I'll go watch Jaws again. -
Hosting a toilet training video? I think that's what I'm gonna remember him from most.
-
Damn! I loved this guy. I agree that he was incredibly good in Sorcerer. What an apex he had between French Connection and All That Jazz, which I'll always remember as his most dynamic performance. He WAS Fosse in that movie, and more.
-
Or will Ledger be the final clip? I say the line for Ledger is at 20 seconds, Roy will be shorter.
-
one can't help but wonder if we're stuck in some kind of real world 'Final Destination' scenario. where's Tony Todd when you need him!?
-
or am i wrong?
-
Oh sweet jesus! This is truly horrible news. Scheider was really one of those guys that I'd see walk into a scene and straight away I'd smile. I'm so bummed! And I don't mean to prattle on about Jaws but that movie is the reason I don't like water. I saw it at the age of five and every second of it is scorched into my brain. I've paid my respects to the dead before on this site, but they've never come with such a heavy heart as now. The man, although well known, was a very understated actor and one of my favorites. His presence will be sorely missed. RIP Roy Scheider.
-
Just had to mention this one as well; probably not a great movie by any means, but I remember catching it late on Showtime once, and Roy Schneider was probably the main redeeming thing about it. What I'm trying to say I guess is that he's one of those guys where he could take even a bad or average movie and make it worth watching. RIP.
-
he even made jaws 2 bearable b/c of his potrayal of brodie. damn, his last reel arrival in the rainmaker was great as well. gosh, this is sad. he will be remembered well.
-
You made us all "certifiable" with your performances... Slow ahead...
-
Finally got the upper hand.
This really caps off a bummer of a day.
That is all I can possibly say at this point, besides geez I hope his family find comfort in the fact they can always watch his films. -
That hurts, some just hit you harder than others. Thanks for everything Mr. Scheider.
RIP. "it's only an island if you look at it from the water" "I can do anything; I'm the chief of police. " God That is an all time great!!! -
hell, the man made seaquest seem like an awesome idea even when the stories stopped making sense. he may not have been the greatest or the best but he poured his heart and soul into his work which is all we can ask of any actor and that's more than we get from a lot of the younger so called actors.
-
Is all. RIP, Chief Brody.
-
One of the best. What else can anyone say? Sad day.
-
He's the star of the first summer blockbuster. He was as iconic as John Wanye.
-
That's all. RIP.
-
although I didn't really see that many of his movies. I just recently saw Sorcerer which I thought was great, but I also loved him in 2010 and All That Jazz. He had such a stand up guy way about him. I'll have to check out some of those films that I've missed. Rest In Peace, Mr. Scheider.
-
This is a sad day, indeed. R.I.P., Roy. I love Jaws and the French Connection.
-
I figured this would hit you a little harder than most. Roy wasn't always the best at picking his roles but, man, when he got a good one, he nailed it. He'll be missed.
-
I just saw Amy Winehouse win record of the year at the Grammys a classic moment. I was on a high. Then I see this. Now I feel like crying. Roy was like a hero to me. I'd follow him anywhere. A wonderful actor to watch. He'll be missed
-
How can you love film and not love Roy Scheider. I will be eternally grateful to him for some of the best movie experiences I could ever hope to have, films that will probably never be equaled in our lifetime. May there never be a day when I dont have those three films within a few feet of my television. Sorcerer. The Seven Ups. All That Jazz. He will forever be an honoroed guest in my home through his work. Thank you, Sir, thank you.
-
He graduated from the same high school I would attend (obviously) decades later- Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ. I've always had much admiration for him. Of course I loved him best for his work in Jaws. He will always be the man in my eyes. Thanks for the obit Quint. God bless his soul and his family during this tough time. May he rest in peace.
-
He was so great as Nathan Bridger in seaQuest. I loved that show. And Jaws, of course. 2010 was awesome.
-
while reading a little naked lunch. blue thunder man..fucking blue thunder.
-
He will always be remembered and will never be forgotten.
-
This realy stings, Roy Scheider was one of my favorite actors.
-
He was the best character on that series, but that show was fun to watch. I know he didn't like being on it, but he played Bridger well.
-
I need something in the foreground to give it some scale! Foreground, my ass!
-
The man could act. He got his role in the "French Connection" when William Friedkin saw him in an off-broadway play as a cigar smoking nun(!!!!) and gave him the role as Popeye Doyle's partner. I'm sure we're all sorry to see such a great actor leave us. R.I.P.
-
His iconic role will always be Jaws, but he's just as great in French Connection and Sorcerer. The latter, btw, is a rare case of an American remake being just as good as the foreign original. Not to knock Clouzot or anything. Sleep well, man.
-
All That Jazz was definitely his tour de force, but his utter seediness in Naked Lunch is my favorite of his many great movie roles.
-

Wow that is like a sucker punch out of no where. RIP
by allpowerfulwizardofoz
Very sorry to hear this. I had no idea honestly he was even pushing 80. I guess when you watch movies like Jaws and you don't see an actor for many years they become timeless. He was a fantastic actor.
-
French Connection and Jaws are two of the greatest films of all time. Personally two of my own all time favorites. Scheider was perfect in them. Every line he delivers in JAWS, a classic. A pitch perfect performance. Farewell and adieu to you sir.
-
He helped make the first film I truly loved...many memories and all great...sad day *having a drink to you*
-
2010, I never thought they could make a sequel that worked for 2001, but this film actually works
-
Sniff.
-
That famous shot of him jolting into frame from "Jaws" (you know the one) is so iconic. The man will live forever in the highlight reel of the history of film. Even if my future great-grandchildren never see "Jaws" I am positive they will know him and that shot.
-
Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

Iron Cross (08) (post-production) Dark Honeymoon (08) (complete)
by orionsangels
Still two more Roy Scheider films left. Can't wait to see them.
-
Roy is one of the main reasons why 2010 works
-
RIP Mr. Scheider. You will be missed, but we're lucky enough to have some great work to remember you by.
-
I thought he had recovered and that he was doing fine. man, I always hoped that they would get around to filming a "2061" movie and that they would use Scheider to portray Dr. Floyd again, it would have been perfect. he's done a lot of cool movies.
-
"I can go slow ahead. Come on down here and chum some of this shit."
-
Damn fine actor and all-around good guy. 'nuff said.
-
People like Roy Scheider. Who seem so humble and strong and brave. When Roy Scheider yelled you were at attention. When he was concerned. You were concerned. There was never a single dull moment when watching Scheider act. Scheider seemed like such a friendly approachable guy. He always seemed like a father figure to me.
-
I can't imagine why.
-
Sniff. Poor Darwin.
-
Scheider was a great great actor. I will miss him alot.
-
A friend of mine was working with him on Iron Cross and said he was a joy to film with.
-
Man, I'm just in shock over this. A friend and I were talking about how great and actor he was just last week. I mean, fuck. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
-
He had a way of making every performance interesting. I had one personal encounter with him and he was a very nice gentleman.
-
Awesome actor and an awesome person. He was in 2010(one of my personal favorites) and in The Punisher with Thomas Jame. I once read somewhere that he loved doing the first season of seaQuest DSV, but hated doing the rest because he loved the fact that the first season had to do more with science-fact than science-fiction. RIP Mr. Schneider.
-
RIP Mr. Scheider. He seemed like one heck of a nice guy, and fine actor.
-
Another minor gem that Roy elevated
-
and "Tiger Town" in HD and Blue Ray
Thank you Roy -
. . . to fit all the greats he is a part of. Missed he'll be.
-
To Roy's family, friends and fans. And to you Quint. You were one of the first people I thought of when I heard this terrible news. Best that can be said is that he's out of pain, and for that we can be thankful.
-
I was watching shark show son discovery tonight - how ironic is that? he will be missed - a big part of my fave film vault and growing up watching movies - RIP
-
that he played a greedy insurance exec who refused to pay for a boy's cancer treatment in the movie The Rainmaker. RIP Roy.
-
...or where to begin. Wow. Like a sucker punch to the gut. I am so saddened to learn of Roy's passing. Thanks for the very nice send off, Quint...and the use of that iconic photo.
Jaws was, for me, the first time cinema grabbed me by the throat and let me see how viseral the movie going experience can be. If you ask someone what Jaws was about...the answer is almost always "a shark". But that's where they miss the boat. Jaws was about a reluctant hero named Martin Brody...a man who lived on an island who hated the ocean....a cop who grew tired of all the crime in the big city...and sought a nice cushy job in the sleepy resort town of Amity. Little did he know, that nature would provide him with a challenge that made the dirty city street crime he left behind feel like a cake walk.
Roy Scheider embodied the role of Chief Brody, and captured the fear, desperation and triumph of a man who only wanted to deal with the local karate class breaking fence posts and keeping the city safe with the help of one lone deputy and an assistant named Polly.
Because Bruce the Shark was constantly misfiring, and was unable to perform 80% of the tasks the script called for...the movie was transformed from what could have been a bad "monster movie" about a man eating shark...into a compelling character study about the men fated to killing the beast.
Had Bruce actually worked as planned, we would not have gotten the well drawn, carefully crafted characters that ended up making the film the classic that it is today. And Mr. Scheider was a big reason for its tremendous success.
The scene where Mrs. Kintner slaps Chief Brody's face...when, in reality, she should have been slapping the face of the man standing next to him...the greedy, and repugnant Mayor Vaughn...was priceless...and made so much of an impact due to Roy's understated work. I also think back to the scene at the dinner table, where Brody shares a quiet moment making faces at his son...who is mimicing his father's movements. That scene goes overlooked...and it's a shame...because that's the type of scenes where Roy turned Brody into a living, breathing person...the man we know is just doing the best he can to insure eveyone's safety...and his family. The man who conquers his fears and faces the problem head on...with the help of an old salt...and a wise-cracking young oceanographer.
By the time Scheider delivers his famous "Smile you son of a bitch" line...and the triumph of finally destroying his nemesis...Roy's pitch perfect performance is realized...and you feel as though a friend has just gotten a demon off his back...not just a movie character.
I saw Jaws 16 times the summer of '75...many times staying in the theater for the next show. I even snuck an old cassette recorder in with me and recorded the entire film so I could listen to it as I dozed off at night. Since that summer...I've seen Jaws dozens of times...maybe hundreds...I can't tune past it when I find it playing on TBS or AMC. And Roy's reprisal of Brody in Jaws II was the only reason to watch that movie. It was like meeting up with an old friend.
RIP, old friend. Thank you for being such a big part of my life these past 30+ years. Hopefully you and Robert Shaw are having a big laugh together right now. Thanks for the memories, Roy Scheider.
"Can you do that, Martin?"...."I can do anything....I'm the Chief of Police". -
RIP Roy, another one of the men who filled the movie screens when I was a lad, who were replaced with overpumped parodies of men, who gave way to undersized pretty boys acting at being men... God speed Roy, and thanks for all the movie moments that live on...
-
aww man, not the good dr. Benway!! May him and Burroughs be ripping heaven apart tonight... With the aliens of course... A very serious RIP over a guiness right now...
-
This sucks :(
Weird, I was just thinking of All That Jazz last night.....Premonition!! :P -
,.but I'll always remember him as Captain Bridger. Seaquest is and will always be my fav sci fi series of the nineties and Roy made that show! To hell with the stupid Michael Ironsides third season. Seaquest ended when Capt Bridger left.
-
I thought first it was rob schneider star of the Animal and all the Sandler movies.
Pheww that was a close one -
That was a great movie.
RIP Roy. He was a great actor. -
Major props for being so wonderful in that role alone.
-
After watching his performance in Blue Thunder, I was thrilled he was taking on the role of Heywood Floyd in 2010. I re-read Arthur C. Clark's novel again recently (better and more detailed than the movie), and I could still imagine Mr. Scheider as Dr. Heywood Floyd (as well as in 2061). I don't know if there would have been a movie version of Odyseey 3, but seeing Scheider would have been worth the cost of admission. My condolences go out to his family and friends. May he now be at peace.
-
very sad
-
I was just talking about him, and what an amazing job he did in the last season finale of Law and Order CI (probably one of the best hours of tv cop drama if you missed it). I was thinking that he was going to start showing up more. Well RIP.
-
I will never forget his teaching us how a toilet works.
-
Good bye Scheider. Love 2010, the amazing scene in Marathon Man when the guy sneaks up on you from behind, the dinner scene in Jaws, French Connection,e tc. Amazing work. Thank you and goodbye.
-
...another great line...
-
A real presence. A voice like nobody else. He brought authenticity to projects that were otherwise garbage. He made everyone around him better. They don't make 'em like him anymore, and never made too many to begin with. He will be missed.
-
I hoped that he would make a huge comeback before he dies. Dammit.
-
His performance is Jaws made me relate to what his character was going through (scared shitless, at first). 2010, French Connection, etc., all great. But Sorcerer, gosh, that was one hell of a movie and he was one hell of an actor. He had more toughness in his little pinky than all these new guys combined. R.I.P. Mr. Scheider. You truly will be missed.
-
What a bummer. Going to have to watch Jaws tonight as a tribute.
-
Blue Thunder, All That Jazz, 2010. Frank Murphy, Joe Gideon, Heywood Floyd. Three characters and one hell of an actor I will never forget. Thanks for the inspiration as a fellow performer, thank you for the laughs and the memories. Godspeed.
-
complete shock... rest in peace sir.
-
Claims another soul.
-
not too faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah....from the caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. How's that?
-
You were great and still are. Godspeed my friend.
-
And Harry always cries every single time.
-
I never new of Roy Scheider before I saw SeaQuest DSV as a kid. I absolutely loved him as Captain Nathan Bridger, and I knew even after watching that show that he was a very capable actor and a man of good integrity. He really brought heart to that show and every other role he's portrayed. When I later saw him in Jaws and Jaws 2, and even his bit part in The Punisher, I liked him even more. RIP Mr. Scheider, you were one of Hollywood's great ones.
-
...that's for damn sure.
-
Fuck that! Roy was a totally totally underrated actor. Sure, he got respect from directors who cast him in great films, but the man lost Best Actor to Dustin Hoffman in Kramer vs Kramer, the year he BURNED the competition with ALL THAT JAZZ. That's PROOF that the Oscars are LAME and don't mean fucking shit. So many great movies. What a shame.
-
I was just a little kid in the 70's and saw 'The French Connection' and 'Jaws' on the big screen.
What a shock to hear of his death. I never knew him personally but he seemed to be a very likable actor. -
...My love for Jaws is no secret to others who know and love it. In 1975 I was 10 years old. I saw Jaws at the drive-in. It changed everything about the way I thought of movies, actors, water, sharks, and my own mortality (thank you very much Alex Kintner). Roy Scheider became one of my favorite actors at a time when I was only just starting to even be able to acknowledge that the guys playing my heroes were real and figures I idolized were made up characters (it was the '70's -- no dvd's or interweb machines to remind a boy of these facts day in and day out). The same definitely goes for Robert Shaw, but -- unlike Scheider -- he always intimidated me. Not to mention, he didn't last even to the end of the '70's, so he hasn't been around throughout the ensuing years of my life, popping up in movie after movie as an old familiar face. Roy Scheider felt like my dad or something. I never saw a performance by him that I didn't like, but he will always be Chief Brody to me. "You're not going to do this aboard the ship are you, Mr. Quint?"
-
I'm so upset by this news. I loved this guy and his work. He was an amazing actor and you could tell he was a good, decent man as well. He was one of my favorite actors in hollywood and will be forever. The really strange part is that I had a dream about him a couple of nights ago. I have been watching some of his stuff last week and I was googling more of his work this evening when I came across the news of his death. At first I thought it was a mistake, but unfortunately it wasn't. Yesterday I even ordered one of his films. It's just really upsetting. He'll always have a special place in my heart. You'll live forever through your movies! Love ya Roy and R.I.P!
-
Sad. Much respect...

-
I totally agree with shozo as well. Roy should have won a couple of those oscars, but whatever. His fans know what a great actor he was.
-
Such a strong, charismatic actor. So many memorable performances. I especially loved his tour de force in ALL THAT JAZZ. Rest in peace, Roy.
-
Very sad. Rest In Peace Roy, condolensces to your friends and family, and to Quint, who I know will be feeling this.
-
Probably his best work, along with Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number. A superb actor who really deserved a bigger boat.
-
You will be missed. Say "Hi" to Evil Knievel for me.
-
I have no words.
-
Roy Scheider's passing is a goddamn shame. Easily one of the most underrated and under used actors in the past twenty years. He really shoulda been in the same category as someone like Dustin Hoffman, Bob De Niro, or Gene Hackman, but he never kept up the heat from the late 70s. And it wasn't that he didn't have the talent either - I'd argue he was as good as/even better than the three above. will be sorely missed...that's some bad hat harry...
-
you are in a better place now chief...somewhere where they do respect your work
-
Loved Scheider. 2010, JAWS, SORCERER and BLUE THUNDER are among my favorite movies...
-
Via NetFlix's download service I saw Roy in The Seven-Ups.
While an otherwise OK film, the car chase scene was one of the best I have ever seen. And, the end of the chase made me cringe.
Very good. Watch it if you can. -
You'll be missed.
-
Sad news indeed. I've always loved Scheider and he was one of the first actors I learned to recognize when I was a wee lad. Like Michael Caine, he was one of those actors who, no matter how shitty the movie was he was in, would escape unscathed and unsullied.
I know it's not a popular opinion, but I love 2010. A lot of people hold the mistaken notion that it somehow diminishes 2001 by its very existence, but I disagree. It's a completely different kind of movie and works very well on its own, in no small measure due to Scheider's great performance.
Other favorites include Marathon Man (why can't modern thrillers capture the sinister atmosphere that so many 1970s thriller seemed to do with ease?), Cohen & Tate (why isn't this on DVD?) and The Fourth War (crap movie, but unforgettable Scheider performance).
R.I.P. -
Sad, sad news. A hugely under-appreciated actor with a special kind of charisma. I loved the way he was so vulnerable in Jaws and still managed to come across as a real man's man. I'd always hoped to meet him. Vale, Roy Scheider. You ruled.
-
Yes he can. Thank you Mr. Scheider. R.I.P.
-
Jaws. Fuck yeah.
-
That was a great show, broke my heart when they cancelled it. One of the best 90's Sci Fi shows. Roy will be missed.
-
Great acting and persona in Marathon Man, wonderfully nutty in Naked Lunch and absolutely superb in All That Jazz. It's Showtime, Folks!
-
He was a very special actor who helped make a lot of great movie what they were.
-
We're losing all the greats. In my mind I picture all my favorite actors living on forever. They do in film yes, but I don't like to think of them dead.
-
This sucks, he will be missed. Lets forget him in the floater that was "The Punisher", and remember him in great works like " The French Connection ".
-
He was one of my favorite actors, damn it! He'll live on film forever
-
and i hate being reminded of my own mortality
-
Its after Quint comes down inside the boat and destroys the radio with a baseball bat. Then Roy gets all pissed saying "Well thats great! Thats just great!" and then he starts hitting the radio with the bat as well. I don't know why, but I always thought the way he did that scene was hilarious. Besides his work in Jaws, he did some great work on the French Connection, 2010(which I think is a great movie) and All That Jazz. I'm gonna miss him.
Farewell Roy. -
gonna have to make a point of catching that one!
I still remember thinking how could this guy possibly get any cooler and then watched Sorcerer - if you haven't seen this, do yourself a favour and check it out! -
they fuckin gotta do something special for him...roy was a part of history....jaws was the first blockbuster and one of the few blockbusters that was mostly character driven...my god, the shark sucked...but who cared...i didnt...i was 14 and jumped out of my seat when the shark went for the chum...so damnit...give the man a retropective at this years oscars...that part i will watch
-
and it was an experience which changed the way I looked at films and story telling in general. Scheider's work in ATJ was brilliant and far removed from chief Brody.
I saw Sorcerer at the theater when I was way too young and of course loved it. F'ing incredible film that burned itself into my memory.
R.I.P. Mr. Scheider -
in '91 or '92, when I was waiting tables. He came in the restaurant. Seemed very decent. I always thought he conveyed a startling intelligence and drive onscreen. A singular presence.
-
...that William Goldman would write a script for "Brothers", his follow up novel to Marathon Man. It was actually a really neat story, and seeing an entire film about Scheider's character would have been fantastic. I'll also throw my vote in for his performance in All That Jazz being one of the greatest performances I've ever seen committed to film.
-
"Grab your ankles and kiss your ass goodbye, Jafo. We're going down."
-
I was watching Jaws 2 last night on tv. It could've been great if they just focused on Brody for the first 2 acts of the movie - No Shark until the last 20 mins - just a sense that there might something out there in the water. Some great scenes in there with Lorraine Gary. Damn Roy, you were a second dad for me growing up. Thanks for the memories old friend.
-
One of the 70's finest. An inspiration, and underrated.
-
Absolutely gutted at this.
An absolute legend - especially in Jaws.
Think I'll watch it later when I go home. -

Jaws is the greatest movie of all time for 4 reasons
by theycallmemrglass
Schieder. Shaw. Dreyfuss. Spielberg. No other film in history had 3 actors playing off each other with such vitality and intesity as here. Schieder was perfect. He was my childhood hero who killed the monster that frightened me. He was the fatherly protector. I only saw Jaws for the hundresth time a few days ago. 2010 is my second favourite Scheider film and then Marathon Man. Cool character to the end. RIP Roy Scheider.
-
I loved that movie and I loved him in it...very menacing. His 70's movies though are among some of the best.
-
He truly was one of the greatest actors to emerge and make his mark during the 70's, but while Pacino, Hoffman, DeNiro and Nicholson found true fame, Scheider instead had a workmanlike, though still impressive, career. But unlike all of those actors, who faltered at times in the coming years, or who seemed to get bored or rest on their laurels at times, Scheider was always top class and gave his all to whatever role he was playing. He was one of those actors that you could always rely on for a quality performance, no matter the film or the role. With an industry now seemingly more focussed on fame than on acting, we won't see his like again, but at least we'll always have the films and performances that he left us with to revisit and to remind us what real acting is all about. Rest in peace Roy Scheider, and thanks for all the great memories.
-
Abe Vigoda will outlive everyone!! All hail the great Abe Vigoda!!
-
Great actor, he was one of my favourites growing up. Rest in peace.
-
Thank you for everything, Mr. Scheider

"We're gonna need another boat!" Sad Sad News. AGAIN!!!
by alucardvsdracula
Think of all the cool lines he had in Jaws: "Smile you Son of a Bitch!!!" etc. Another great gone. R.I.P
-
JAWS may be my favorite film, and I just saw 2010 the other day. My deepest sympathies to his family.
-
Shaark!!
Great loss. Rest in peace, Roy -
Only last week, spent a day quoting Chief Brody.
This is a shit start to the day.
Really sad news. -
http://fantasymoguls.com/forum/posts/list/755.page
-
rip.
-
Blue Thunder qualified as one of the coolest movies of the period. I must have seen it a dozen times from the first time in the theater to on TV. JAWS was life changing. Scared the crap out of me for years. Rest in peace Roy wherever you are.
-
All That Jazz...man...
fine film
sorceror...
and on -
Man, sad, sad news. Roy Scheider was definitely undervalued by the tools that run Hollywood, a masterful character actor. His performance in Jaws is real to me, having seen Jaws at an early age I always thought it was cool when Police Chief Brody would pop up in other films. Thanks for everything Roy, and hopefully the Academy will give you a posthumous Oscar for your life's work.
-
Such a part of my movie childhood, as he seems to have been for many others. Terrific actor. Gone, but never forgotten.
-
Cohen & Tate: his performance in that film, opposite Adam Baldwin, was just amazing. The Fourth War: silly premise that's saved by two amazing performances by Jurgen Prochnow and especially Roy Scheider.Naked Lunch: One of Cronenberg's masterpieces in my opinion, and Scheider was truly creepy as Dr Benway. The Russia House, where Scheider, for my money, stole pretty much every scene he was in. 52 Pickup, one of the last of the bare-knuckled Elmore Leonard film adaptations, before Leonard films became all slickened and hollywoodized, where Scheider just owned the screen. The Myth Of Fingerprints: Roy Scheider's performance as the head of the family was, along with Julianne Moore, the best thing about this strongly acted ensemble drama.Romeo Is Bleeding: An under appreciated film (that I always loved personally), and an under-rated performance by Scheider in his supporting role as a mafia don.The Seven-Ups: One of the most unjustly over-looked and nigh on forgotten films of the 70's, and Roy Scheider really was top of his game in this one. Oh, and the car chase *is* better than the ones in Bullitt, The French Connection and To Live & Die In LA. Check it out if you ever get a chance, and you love 70's crime.Last Embrace: Not a perfect film, but still a quality old school thriller from Jonathan Demme that benefitted greatly from a superb central performance from Roy Scheider.
Of course in addition to all those he was of course fantastic in all the roles that he's most often remembered for: Jaws, Sorcerer, The French Connection, Marathon Man, All That Jazz, Klute, 2010, Blue Thunder, and even SeaQuest DSV. That's quite a legacy to leave behind, and one we're all richer for having experienced. -
It's like a piece of your stomach torn out. A bigger boat is just Blue Thunder; and All That Jazz.
Cheers to you both. -
He will be unforgotten. He was already a legend since Jaws but never gave a bad performance even in his lesser movies. And i liked him. RIP.
-
He will be unforgotten. He was already a legend since Jaws but never gave a bad performance even in his lesser movies. And i liked him. RIP.
-
I liked Roy- great actor.
-
sorry eric, im prettty sure this guy made a big impact on you, man...
-
He was totally awesome in that movie and pretty much every movie I saw him in. Never a dud performance in his career.
-
Damn, this guy was great in everything he was in. A favourite of mine was 2010, which despite not being generally liked was a real favourite of mine.
-
in my living room with Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman while watching JAWS, they were so jealous that they didn't get the role.
-
RIP Roy. I had no idea he had cancer. So sad.
-
Jaws remains one of the greatest films ever in my opinion. Harry says that The Host is on par with it!!!!!!!!!
-
I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't get over this horrible news. I'm gonna be thinking about this man for a while. I can't get it out of my head and I just feel so bad for his children.
-
to me you'll always be Chief Brody, maybe it would've pissed you because of the great other movies you made... but Brody means a lot to me. I was the kind of caracter that help a young boy becoming a man. Taking responsibility and trying to do things right.
-
I remember seeing him in a Gap store in New York about 15 years ago and I so wanted to say something to him but didn't. I always regretted that. Oh well. Rest in peace Roy.
-
'cause Jesus just hauled in a big one...
-
Gonna miss Roy. Jaws was his most memorable role but I also loved him in The French Connection, Blue Thunder, and 2010. Thanks for the memories Chief Brody. May you rest in peace.
-
RIP Chief.
-
I too loved 2010 and Sorcerer. And Jaws, of course.
-
Feb 11, 2008 5:41:52 AM CST
He was great that one time on Law & Order: CI
by guy who got a headache and accidentally
Playing some Hannibal Lecter knock off who might have been Vincent D'onfrio's characters dad. A classic Roy Scheider role.
-
Also one of the most underrated. I'm truly sad to hear of his death, I didn't even know he was ill. I'm actually finding it quite hard to type this, so I'll just say thanks for your films and may you rest in peace Mr. Scheider.
-
Blue Thunder was one of my favorite 80's film of the high concept genre. His scenes in Marathon Man were almost as memorable as Olivier's.Last film I saw him in was 2004's Punisher. R.I.P. Roy, atleast at the age of 75 you lived a modest full life wihout scndal and all the usual Hollywood BS. Peace.
-
I was watching that piece of crap Jaws 2 last night and the only reason was Roy Shieder! The guy just had a perfect screen presence, like you were watching your dad up there 'Splodin that motherfukin massive assed Shark! One of the loopiest, most amazing bits of cinema a kid had ever seen!Thank you Mr Scheider.
-
Thank you.
-
He always brought something special to any film he was in. RIP.
-
Chief Brody.......sad....
-
he was great in all he did. Especially in 2010, Blue Thunder ( so need to get that on hi-def) and of course, Jaws. If anything else, he will be remembered for the greatest ad-lib in movie history "Your gonna need a bigger boat" Class.
-
He'll certainly be missed.
-
I remember him more for Jaws, Blue Thunder, 2010, and Seaquest. I've never seen Maraton Man, and only bits and pieces of The French Connection. Too bad his later career was DTV and itty bitty supporting roles. I forget why he left Seaquest. I wasn't sure if it's what he wanted, or they wanted to try and inject new life into the show. At least they replaced him with another great actor, Michael Ironside. Gotta love it in Blue Thunder when he flipped the chopper, and blew the crap out of Malcolm McDowell.
-
Hope Satan rapes your ass.
-
Hope Satan rapes his ass.
-
Hope Satan rapes your cheeks with parking meter.
-
RIP Roy
-
I had no idea he was so popular with movie fans until I read this talkback. He was one of those very rare actors it was so easy to feel empathy with, he had a genuine unaffected everyman quality. There was no vanity in his performances, they always seemed so relaxed and... dare I say it... 'natural'.
RIP -
Very sad news.
-
Is my favorite line from Jaws. And I like the drunk song b4 the big attack. I will have to get the Blew-Ray DVD when that is ready.
RIP -
RIP, so sad. Jaws is my favourite film of all time, and i agree with Quint that Roy was the likable anchor of that movie. So sad.
-
This is a terrible loss. Scheider was a magnificent actor who brought great stature to everything he appeared in. JAWS will be the clasic he's remembered for the most. "Smile ya sonofabitch!" is a legendary line. He was the best thing in 2010 and even brought gravitas to The Punisher with his cameo. I feel robbed of a great talent. I thought he'd be around for another 20 years, giving more great performances. RIP Roy.
-
God speed He's in the big fish take in the sky.
-
..is this bullshit? Chief Brody doesn't die! Jesus, he was the best thing in Jaws 4, and he was only a picture on a wall.
Hail to the chief. -
This truly sucks. Scheider was great in everything I saw him in, but Jaws has always been in my top three. Hell, I even liked Jaws 2 because he was in it. It's like losing one of your cool uncles or something. Damn. Miss ya, Roy. You were a class act. Now where's that "Shark is Still Working" DVD? It'll end up being one of the last movie-version interviews with him in it. And Peter Benchley.

"That's just great! You're certifiable, you know that?!"
by jack-torrance
-
I just caught Sorcerer recently on DVD for the first time. Man, where has that film been all my life? A lost classic from the seventies with a great performance from Scheider.
-
Not even Michael Caine could save that turd. But, as he put it "I haven't seen the movie, but I've seen the house it bought, and it is quite lovely." or something to that effect.
-
A very underappreciated actor. What a loss.
-
like if Charlton Heston took the role. I think he was offered it, and declined, or something like that. Sure, it would have been great. I love Chuck. But better than Scheider, for that particular role? That would be a closer vote than the Democratic Primary.
-
I know he had cancer but like many of you Scheider was one of my favorite actors and this just kills. He was one of those guys that just isn't the norm in Hollywood any more and it's a damn tragedy. That great 70's grit and natural charisma that just owned the screen. Like many folks posting on here Jaws is my favorite movie and I don't say that lightly. Seeing it at the drive in with my parents is one of my very first memories and it lead to a life long fascination with sharks as well as admiration for the cast and Spielberg. And a huge part of my love for that movie is due entirely to Roy Scheider's performance. Thank you for the memories Roy, you will be missed.
-
Jaws 2 was a decent film. While not as great as Jaws it was a worthy follow up. The soundtrack is underrated and one of Williams finest scores. RIP Roy, you will be missed sir.
-
That sucks. :( Best thing that came out of a fish on a stick. Sucks I liked him, he had that real person feel to his work.
-
may he be at peace ...
-
...My friend and his girlfriend went to a movie in Manhatten. The previews were going and in walks Roy Scheider and his wife (?) and they sit right next to my friend. Guy's a real autograph hound but he was nervous to be sitting right next to Roy Scheider... Sherif Brody from Jaws! So he fidgets for about a hour, trying to summon the courage to ask Scheider for an autograph or something, but what to do?... everyone is watching the movie. Finally, my friend's girlfriend just grabs his notebook and *whap!* slaps it down into the lap of a very shocked Roy Scheider and loudly asks him, "Mr. Scheider, could you sign this? My boyfriend here won't stop twitching!" And he sort of smirked and signed it! "Stop twitching! Roy Scheider" LOL! Didn't even get up and move to another row either. Great guy, great actor... gonna miss him.
-
Prayers and thoughts to his family and friends.
-
Seemed like a great guy that had some good roles.
-
with the dolphin that could talk... and what's his name ... that kid actor... what happened to him?
-
"Why?" "Because I need it." Whoever above said that scene defines that relationship between father and son was right spot on. Jaws was the first film I ever saw on the big screen and Brody was my first on-screen hero. Before Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, before Indiana Jones there was Chief Martin Brody. Godspeed, Roy. Farewell and adieu. Knock a few back with Shaw for us, huh? :)
-
I loved his take on Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2010 (even though the 2001 version of Floyd is a wee bit more "sinister", for want of a better term). I still held out hope that maybe, just maybe, we'd someday get to see his reprise the role in a big-screen adaptation of 2061. Alas, it is not to be.
-
I thought the headline said "Rest In Peace Rob Schneider". I was halfway into baking a celebratory cake before I noticed my mistake. Nevertheless, this is more sad news. 2008 and shaping up to great for the good guys, I've gotta say.
-
"2008 ain't shaping up too great for the good guys" **slaps proofreader**
-
RIP CHIEF BRODY.
-
And special mentions for his great acting in Marathon Man, 52 Pick-Up, Cohen and Tate, The Fourth War and of course Romeo is Bleeding as well.

It's only an island if you're looking at it from the water.

We'll miss you, Roy.
-
Glad to see people showing the love for 2010, a very underrated movie in my opinion. I'm sure we'll see JAWS footage during his piece of the Oscars memorial montage, but 2010 footage would be much more apropos...
-
I always thought Mr. Scheider was one of the most underrated actors around. I loved the 7-ups, Blue Thunder and 2010, but his work in Jaws and All That Jazz are simply iconic. Another instance of a wonderful actor not recognized for his wonderful body of work. I hope he gets a long ovation at the Oscars, 2 noms do not do this man's resume justice. As luck would have it, I just let my oldest daughter watch Jaws for the first time, so another generation enjoys his wonderful work.
-
RIP Roy.
-
Put in 9 Nines, press the square root and then the interger.
-
He was in 5 of my favorite movies, Jaws, Jaws2, French Connection, Blue Thunder and even 2010. Great actor, seemed like a good man. RIP Roy!
-
may you rest in peace.
-
While Jaws 2 is not the amazing, groundbreaking film that Jaws is, I think Roy Scheider's work in it was great. In the first Jaws, he's the new guy--he sees this problem and he tries to act on it, only to be thwarted by political interests. Once it's undeniable, he acts and brings the whole Coast Guard down on the place. He faces his fear of the water to stop the menace at its source. In Jaws 2 Brody's in a different place. He's the town hero, everyone knows him, he's got power -- but another shark shows up, this one a little sneakier. This one doesn't kill children in front of the whole town, but Brody knows. Everything he gained between the first and second movie is slowly lost as he's made out to be a crank, a nut. He's no longer a hero, he's fired, and worse yet, his two sons are out on the ocean with the shark that only he knows is there. Scheider played Brody a little nuts in Jaws 2 and it works. He's all alone, basically, and at the end when he's facing down the giant shark in a little life raft armed only with an oar and a power cable, he's yelling and shouting like an insane guy--he plays it like Brody snapped a little bit. SO...is Jaws 2 Jaws? No. But I think Scheider's role in it was great and the movie wasn't all bad.
-
Amazing Actor.
-
I saw Jaws 2 in theaters before I saw the original Jaws. I loved it. Loved Scheider in it. He made a mediocre picture great. I love the scene near the beginning at the pool opening with his wife and they're like, "You wanna get out of here...go home, get drunk and fool around?" Scheider really gave life to Brody, and with Loraine Gary, they acted out a very believable, 'real' marriage. "You're too damn drunk. You're too damn drunk..."
-
he always gave it his best effort. I saw him in an interview when Jaws 2 came out, and he admitted that he did the role "at the point of a gun." But he didn't phone it in, as much as he must have discouraged by the final result. Rest in peace, Roy - you've earned it.
-
Of course Jaws 2 didn't measure up to the first, but Moonwatcher is right. I really saw that movie as nearly on par with the first because of Scheider. You can tell he does give it his all, and not for a moment did he seem down about being in it (and if you hadn't mentioned that "point of a gun" comment, I couldn't have seen it). I wish he had more roles in his career that had kept him in the limelight but certainly he's made more of a lasting contribution than many many lesser actors.
-
Heard he was one of Spielberg's favorite actors.
He was a part of Jaws and a part of cinema history. Rest in peace. -
He really did make Jaws 2 a better movie than it deserved to be. A real chunk of my childhood got lost today. RIP.
-
my fave of his work had to have been 2010. He did his work like an everyday man.
-
He will be missed. He was the only reason I even bothered with SeaQuest for the short time that I did. Singularly cool and ballsy aspect of the recent Punisher remake. I love 2010, and I think the primary reason is because of Scheider. The sequel couldn't match the mystery, the music or the visual dexterity of the original, so what Scheider brought to it-a humanity and a warmth was the only real thing that distinguished it as something special apart from the original. I think Ill pull that one out and watch it tonight.
-
I dunno...is there some way we as the AiCN community can do something to honor Scheider or thank his family? Like when BSB or whoever brought flowers to Heath Ledger's apt? That was class.
-
I just clicked over to Ain't It Cool to catch up on my morning reading. Man. Heath Ledger's death was tragic, but just wasn't as connected with his work. It was more about what he was *going* to do.
With Roy, though... man. I gasped. He's an unsung hero to millions of people, and I'm just now feeling how much he was a part of my childhood. Jaws, 2010, Blue Thunder, All That Jazz, Sea Quest before it went tits up... A man of quiet tenacity.
Wow. -
damn, this is a huge loss to the movie loving world. Rest in Peace Mr. Scheider, you will be missed.
-
Jaws has been my favorite movie for most of my life, but I never realized how badass Roy Scheider was until I saw that hotel fight in Marathon Man. We won't see his like again.
-
first The French Conection and then
The 7 UPS great actor,great movie's
U youngsters watch these movie's nuff said. -
I always enjoyed watching Roy Scheider, wish he was in more stuff.
-
He deserved a bigger career. RIP, Roy. Tonight will be Jaws night for me.
-
Piece of of Artwork hanging on the wall, of Brody behind the rifle scope, aiming at the shark, as the boat sinks. Its just a sketch really, but its incredible..(Olde City Tattoo, Phila)
-
I think tonight will be a Jaws night for me too.
-
Awesome flick. I want a helicopter like that.
-
His yell of joy and relief after he blew up the shark was the best ending to a Spielberg movie ever.
-
Don't know if anyone has seen him in this movie but you should. It's awesome.
RIP Chief Brody. -
Thats some really shitty news. I loved him in Marathon Man, Jaws and The French Connection. And although i'v heard recently that it as a shitty program, i've nothing but fond childhood memories of Seaquest DSV.
RIP Roy. I hope there's a talking Dolphin where ever you are now. -
and Mr. Scheider's legacy will live on through his body of work. Godspeed, Mr. Scheider.
-
Who proved to me that a helicoptor CAN do a Loop and put a bullet up the bad guy's butt. (I screamed for a whole minute after that one.)
-
Roy Scheider, 75, died Sunday of complications from a staph infection at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, where he had been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma for the past two years. Roy Scheider began working as an actor on "The Edge of Night" in 1962. He worked on television until the end of that decade, making his way into films with an uncredited role in "Paper Lion," then getting noticed as Jane Fonda's pimp in "Klute" (1971)That same year both Scheider and co-star Gene Hackman became stars with the release of The French Connection. While I hold to my opinion that Steve mc.Queen's "Bullitt" had the best car chase sequence in film history, "The French Connection" certainly comes in a close second. Scheider was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the film but lost... to Hackman. He varied his career between TV and both foreign and domestic films, most notably "The Seven-Ups" (1973) until landing the lead in Steven Spielberg's breakthrough film "Jaws" (1975). While the film is considered a classic in the horror and monster movie genres, Scheider approached his role with a comedic touch that made his character all the more likable and vulnerable. He delivered the films best known line "You're going to need a bigger boat." Fans of the TV series "House, MD" will want to watch the monthy TBS reruns of "Jaws" with an ear open to catch the line "That's some bad hat, Harry" (the tag line of the "House" production company.) Jaw's is considered the first movie in the era of "blockbuster films", the first film to earn over $100,000,000.00 at the box office.Following "Marathon Man" (1976), he made a lesser known masterpiece of suspense, "Sorcerer" 91977) Director William Friedkin was hot off of "The Exorcist", Scheider was hot off of "Jaws", and the teamed up for a tale of a group of crooks who make a seriously bad career move (robbing a church) and compound it with an even worse move (killing a priest with a mob-connected brother.) having offended both God and The Mob, the men hide out in a small south American village and are hired to transport a truckload of unstable nitroglyvcerine across twisting jungle roads and decaying rope bridges, all to the tune of a very effective soundtrack by the synthesizer group Tangerine Dream. He went the sequel route the next year with "Jaws II", essentially a remake of the original. The following year he performed one of the roles he was proudest of, playing "Joe Gideon" in the roman-a-clef Bob Fosse auto-bio-pic "All That Jazz" (1979) - a role that earned him his second Oscar nomination. In '83 he starred in "Blue Thunder," in '84 had a key role in "2010: The Year We Make Contact," and in '85 hosted a first season episode of Saturday Night Live.In 1986 he had the lead role in John Frankenheimer's film of Elmore Leonard's story "52 Pick-Up". This gritty hard--boiled crime-noir actioner falls into the same "kill the crooks" genre as the "Death Wish" and "Dirty Harry" films, but Scheider's character is a cunning businessman who responds to being framed for murder and then blackmailed by for the most part tricking his enemies into killing each other, ala the old TV version of "Mission Impossible." The movie exploited the public's then current fascination with "snuff films" by having the bad guys film the killing of the girl they caught Scheider having an affair with (with his own gun) and then showing him the film. The movie has an extraordinary cast and adult film fans will want to look for familiar faces during the party scene. His next decades worth of films included "Night Game" (1989) and "Naked lunch" (1991)From 1993 to 1995 he tried his hand at television again as the lead on "Seaquest DSV".His three dozen film and televison projects after that included "The Peacekeeper," "Rainmaker," "Daybreak" and "The Punisher".His final film roles will be appearing in 2008 - "Dark Honeymoon" is completed and "Iron Cross" is in post-production. =Napoleon.Park= obits:http://tinyurl.com/ypn2cs http://tinyurl.co/2gw84t

First and most importantly, the passing of a great actor and a personal favorite. I always had a huge soft spot for Roy Scheider and he will be missed. Rest in peace. You've left us with a great body of work. I'm also disappointed to see that Sorcerer isn't getting more love on this Talkback. For anyone that hasn't done so, you owe it to yourself to check out this movie. It easily stands amongst Friedkin's best films.

Oh man, this is some sad sad news. Jaws is also my absolute, all time favourite movie and chief Brody one of my all time favourite characters - along with Hooper and Quint, of course. Very sadly missed, old boy - I'm watching Jaws tonight in your honour, and joining Quint in drinking to our legs. RIP good buddy. :(
-
"Try chummin' some of this shit."
-
2010 was the first movie I ever bought on DVD because it resonated so much with me. One of my favorite parts of the whole movie is when he's narrating his letters to his wife, "Dear Caroline..." It just, sells the whole experience for me. Same thing with Seaquest DSV. The first season was an amazing look at what was possible... "For beneathe the surface, lies the future..." His voice just sold it for me. One day, when I have kids, I'll be introducing them to this man on DVD and I hope they become as big a fan as I am...
-
Sad. So long Chief!
-
with Samuel L jackson appearing?
-
Next to Jaws, it might be the best thing Scheider has done. It was intense, and for being a remake of sort of Wages of Fear, it ended up being very much it's own thing and one of the more intriguing films in Friedkin's career. Up until now I didnt have it on dvd, but I think Im gonna have to remedy that soon.
-
Jaws is STILL my favourite film of all time. Its so widely known amongst my friends that this is the case that I was getting texts telling me "Chief Brody died!!" as soon as it was known...Quint got it so right...lets drink to our legs.
-
Nah, I'm not mean enough to wish death on Rob Schneider.
-
His fans remember him on Seaquest which started out well, but began taking a turn for the worst in the second season. Roy wasn't too happy about some of the storylines and decided he wanted off the show. Michael Ironside is not a great actor, he's not even a good one, but he was the guy who took over as captain in the third season and Roy Scheider made some guest appearances because it was in his contract. After watching SEaquest all over again last week, I now know why Roy decided on leaving. The scripts in season 2 were just a bit too much. Nonetheless he was an awesome actor who kicked ass on any project he worked on.

Jaws 2, lousy flick that it was, still boasts one of the best tag lines ever... RIP, Chief Brody

As a writer and aspiring filmmaker, I honestly believed I would have a chance to cast this man in the part which I'd written for him, someday. Someday is something I've said far too many times, but this time, it really hurts. Fly with the angels, buddy.
-
He will be missed.
-
He will be missed. Very sad news.
-
Sorry, I just thought that after everyone and his dog would have used the "Smile you son of a..." I'd go for the lesser used line. Last film I saw him in was The Punisher ( no bad mouthing please, whether you like this film or not is irrelevant in this case) and Mr Scheider was as always, instantly likeable, warm inviting and friendly - but you knew he could be a badass if needed. That's what I loved about him - he was like the ultimate Dad/ Father figure.
I'll be raising a glass of apricot brandy to you tonight good sir, may you rest in peace "Chief" -
My vote for Friedkin's absolute best. Also love Wages of Fear, but Sorcerer seemed so vivid and true, with realism bleeding into madness. The haunting soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, the washed out cinematography of Dick Bush
John M. Stephens, the hardcore jungle location shooting (and real oil fires) all lend to the powerful mis en scene. The largely silent opening vignets also really set the tone and give the film a truly international flavor, like you are seeing the state of a fallen world in 1977. Of course, it's Scheider's performance that anchors the film, as sure as Yves Montand anchors the original. The final scene where he has one last dance, while the hitmen arrive outside, is as haunting as anything you see before it. BTW, really digging the AICN lovefest here.
-
OK, that movie's shite, but it's still another standout Scheider performance.
-
He added a lot to Blue Thunder, a film where a lesser actor would have taken a back seat to the technology and action scenes. Scheider delivered great performances again and again, no matter what the genre. He will truly be missed.
-
Scheider dispatching Malcolm McDowell in Blue Thunder = immortal movie scene.
-
Roy Scheider was Crash Davis before Crash Davis was cool.
-
Jaws is by far, one of my all-time favorite movies. And Roy's "Martin Brody" is one of the best characters on film. Ever. His performance was so good in that film. And he was brilliant in "All That Jazz". He was nominated for an Oscar for that role, but he didn't win it. He should have won it. (sorry, Dustin!) For those two films alone he will forever be in the Heavenly Hollywood pantheon. So long Roy, we will miss you...
-
It's no understatement to say that Jaws changed my life. Good night and God bless, Mr. Scheider, thanks for everything.
-
Of course Jaws is his best film, but I also really like the two films he did with Friedkin (The French Connection and Sorceror). Supossedly there's going to be a new Sorceror DVD sometime soon. I think the reason he was such a good actor was that he was so believable in the parts he played. When he acted, he seemed like he was playing a real person, not just a character.
-
Seriously. RIP man. RIP.
-
...growing up, Roy Sheider's work in 2010 was the first real voice of tolerance I was ever exposed to. At least for me, his work made a very real difference.
-
I'll scan my Jaws 2 trading card--the one with the closeup of Scheider, and post it here for fans of the man who made Amity safe again...and again.
-
Damn, I'm stunned. My favorite Chief :( say hi to Quint for me.
-
Nice guy status: positive confirmation. And I hope your friend married that girl.
-
will be missed.
-
...till we get them silly bastards down in that rockpile, there'll be some fun, they'll wish their fathers had never met their mothers when they start digging their bottoms out and slamming into them rocks, boy' - Okay, so that wasn't Roy Scheider's line but what the hell. A great actor and a nice guy has left us. Rest in peace.
-
How many actors have been gutted by Sir Lawrence?? Marathon Man is still a favorite.
RIP Roy....see you on the other side! -
O. Maddox et al., rent it or buy it!
Golden Dreams Mr. Scheider.... -
i first really know him from 2010 but have liked him in everthing else jaws marathon man blue thunder even that submarine nonsense in the 90's R.I.P.
-
I think the respect shown on this talkback today speaks volumes about how affectionately we hold this man's performances. He was careful in his choices and we here at AICN like that. He'll be missed... because... there's only one Roy Scheider. Awesome.
-
And of all the memorable Spielberg father characters, Roy Scheider's Chief Brody was probably the most fatheriest. He never deserted his family to go chase UFO's or Lost Arks, and single-handedly took out the big bad wolf shark that menaced the little people...
-
What a man's movie starring a man's man!
-
Damn, we just watched the Extended Cut of The Punisher last night. He was in it, and I remember thinking, gosh, he looks old. This is sad news...Farewell and ado to you Roy Scheider. Rest in Peace.
-
Spot on.
Nowadays, everytime I see the "latest, new" laptop computer on the market I think of that ending beach scene in 2010 with H.Floyd and his "clamshell." Just a thought.
Agreed, Heaven truly realed in a big one Spinmove. -
Everytime I see Jaws, he's no longer 'here' with us now. All that time growing up with him, now he's gone. Jaws does indeed feel more empty. He did seem like a good hearted guy off camera too, and I did wonder when I watched him in other stuff, even crud like The Fourth War, whether or not, there was a greater actor in him than I even knew, no matter how good I thought he was already. Again, as workshed said, he seemed to be underrated. I mean, check this out, in the DeNiro biography, it said that for a long long time, Scheider was pinned down to play Michael in The Deer Hunter, and that he and Michael Cimino were very keen for him to play the part. The reason why he couldn't is an incredible irony, is that the role which brought him original fame, was the role which held him back from achieving perhaps the fame that he really wanted - and that was Martin Brody. For even though Jaws made him a star, the fact that he was contractually obligated or something, to star in Jaws 2 or else - meant that he couldn't free himself for The Deer Hunter, which Scheider is said to be well pissed off and angry at ever since, or something. As exceptional as DeNiro was as Michael, one can't help but wonder how much Scheider would have shocked us all, with how amazing HE would have been to. Meanwhile, I'll go check out Sorcerer. You are missed, Roy! See you on the other side.
-
We were drunk, and I called him Rob Schnieder by mistake. Then I heard this, hours later. Sad news. You'll be missed Chief Brody!
-
it scared the living shit out of me and I've been hooked ever since. Thanks for all the years of entertainment! R.I.P.
-
That is what some jackass said on the radio this morning about Roy Scheider dying. My prayers go out to his family. Rest well good sir.
-
... and im glad Roy played Scanlon/Dominguez instead of Friedkin's first choice - McQueen - although im a huge McQueen fan, had he starred i think the movie woulda mainly just been a star-vehicle for him - instead of the masterpiece (sadly underrated) that it is - again, heres an example where Roy lent to a movie's "reality factor"
-
he made me want to see his other movies. And when I saw The Punisher I got that cool nostalgic feeling of "ohh sweet Roy Scheider". Sad he died.
-
other than Scheider and Rogers?
-
That was a great Roy Schneider film. That helicopter was badass and he was great as Frank Murphy in it. Also he was cool as Popeye Doyle's partner in French Connection...the good one. A great actor gone. Enjoy a shark free heaven my friend!
-
I felt like I knew you...you were a brilliant, genius actor.
There are many actors, but only few who leave a lasting memory, an indelible mark on history...
Roy, you are one of those men.
We will never forget you.

I think not!

Jaws is my favorite film of all time. Just a perfect film (in my opinion); direction, cast, chemistry, dialogue, etc. It's ironic that Spielberg also made my least favorite film as well (at least by blockbuster standards - the god-awful Jurassic Park 2: Lost World).
-
is a worthy conclusion to his career. Listed in 'post-production'- IMDB summary:
"Joseph, (ROY SCHEIDER) a retired New York cop, who witnessed the massacre of his family in Poland 1941, travels to Nuremberg to visit his son Ronnie (SCOTT COHEN) having turned his back on him for the last five years for rejecting a promising career in the NYPD and marrying a German woman, Anna (CALITA RAINFORD). No sooner does Joseph attempt to heal the rift with Ronnie, he swears that living in the apartment below under the false name of Shrager (HELMUT BERGER) is the now aging SS Commander who committed the atrocity. With little hope of seeing him stand trial, Joseph talks Ronnie into exacting justice - and vengeance - and together they set out to kill him..." -
Great movie, and Scheider as usual kicked all kinds of ass in it-
Lymangood: All those people. What do you suppose they're all doing down there?
Frank Murphy: Well, according to the latest statistics, about 1 million, 775 thousand of them are... getting it on!
Lymangood: That many, eh!
Frank Murphy: The rest are waiting for 'Laverne and Shirley'! -
The look on Scheider's face when he sees the shark for the first time goes on the reel. Agree on the love for Sorcerer, a great movie that bombed because it was too ahead of it's time. It was an action adventure before Raiders, Stallone, and Der Governator made them huge BO rakers.
-
Hey, I'm gonna sue New Line for making me sit through Freddy VS Jason.

GOD DAMN! Man...I haven't laughed so hard after reading something in a long time. That "celebratory cake" shit was just too much LOL!
FUCK that was funny! LMAO!! -
Seriously. WTF is the reaction going to be for some of the icons now staring at the event horizon?
-
Nice to see so many respectful tributes here for a commanding actor whose performances in so many enduring films will give pleasure for generations to come.
It so happens I graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, Scheider's own alma mater, many years after the man himself, but one year he was the commencement speaker (not the year I graduated, though) and another time he came back to give a talk in the school theater when I was a student (1983), and which I remember clearly. He was very funny and very encouraging to the people in the theater department, showing his love for the place where he'd begun acting, and not putting on any airs at all.
Now let me please be very serious: Scheider died from complications arising from multiple myeloma, a still incurable form of blood cancer, a terrible disease which has touched my immediate family. Please consider making a donation in Scheider's name to either The International Myeloma Foundation (www.myeloma.org) or The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.multiplemyeloma.org). And no I am not affiliated with either group, just someone bearing witness to the effects of this still incurable illness.
Goodbye, Roy Scheider. You were a hell of an actor and thank god we can still see you perform. -
love, Jaws
what?... just because i'm a (dead) great white shark, i can't come to land, jump on someone's computer and pay my respects? blow me. -
So he'll finally be joining Bruce and that Blue Thunder copter up in heaven. I would have thought Popeye Doyle would go first, not Det. Buddy Russo. I never knew he narrated Mishima, loved THAT movie. Saved Orson Welles's ass against William Hearst in RKO 281 and hauled nitro in trucks through miles of jungle. Right now, he's giving Jessica Lange a deep-throated kiss...she finally got to smooch Joe Gideon.
-
Except for being a fucking brilliant, iconic actor. Take a bow, good sir. Take a well-deserved bow.
-
Or George Lucas.
-
Loved Roy Scheider in "Jaws" and "All That Jazz," of course, but because so many people here have recommended it, I'm going to go out of my way to seek out "Sorcerer." Big fan of Tangerine Dream, have owned the soundtrack for years, but for some reason never saw the film. RIP, Mr. Scheider. Your work lives on and will be seen by new eyes forever.
-
He came to Kentucky once. Enjoyed the horses, the bourbon and the baskeball. Roy was a great guy, a wonderful actor, and he will be missed.
-
Sure, he doesn't act much anymore. I think the last gig, which he almost put someone else in anyway was Million Dollar Baby. Where else can you find someone who is both an actor, and director of his caliber? Eastwood is a fine wine, he just gets better with age. And I don't care what anyone says, Bloodwork was great.
-
What a great actor. He had such presence and charisma. Goodbye Roy.
"Smile you son of a bitch!" -
...I just wanted you to know that.
Come worship at the altar of Scheider, kids.

R.I.P
JAWS is one my fav of all time. He made that movie.
JAWS shot him to stardom, but also think it stopped him from reaching his potential.
I heard he turned down deer hunter.
Your gonna need a bigga boat, wasn't in the script, when he aw the shark come out of the water he ad libbed.
-
he DID start making Deer Hunter, but then backed out after "creative differences." And it just happened at the time that the studio wanted a sequel to Jaws. Scheider didn't want to do that, but they said it would count as 2 movies and thus fulfill his contract with them. I'm glad he did it, because he helped make that movie a lot more than it would have been without him.
-
...one of the greatest screen heros ever! I remember about eight years ago Total Film compiled a list of the 50 greatest film heros of our time (Indy was nos 1, James Bond 2, I think John McClane 3) I was so glad to see Chief Brody in the top 20 if memory serves me correctly. Goodbye again Roy! Sniff!
-
That is really sad news. I have been a fan of his for as long as I can remember; Jaws/Jaws 2, Blue Thunder, 2010, etc.
You will be missed, Roy. -
Truly a man's man.
I'm gonna go watch "The Seven Ups" -
..a childhood hero dies,a part of me dies.
-
Mr Jaws and Mr Blue Thunder.
-
Im so glad people have mentioned Sorcerer so much. I have adored that movie for so long. The poster is framed on my wall. And also, the Seven Ups. Another amazing film. Seeing Scheider was always so comforting. I don't think I realized until now just how much he threaded his way through so many of my favorite movies. He really was a great actor and dammit, a real movie star, and it's a career most actors could only dream of. I also wanted to mention his performance in RKO 281. A fun movie about making Citizen Kane. He's the RKO exec working with Welles. And he brings all his humanity and talent to a great part. He was never one of those actors I thought would leave us. And in the best of ways he never will...
-
Prayers go out to your family. I hope you met Eternity amicably. I'll always love you for being Brody.
-
DeNiro did good but i can really picture Scheider as Michael Vronsky with the grounded toughness and stability there.

ACADEMY-AWARD® NOMINEE ROY SCHEIDER’S MISSING SCENE
TO BE DIGITALLY COMPLETED FOR HIS FINAL LEADING ROLE
IN REVENGE THRILLER
IRON CROSS
Film Written & Directed by Joshua Newton and Scheduled to Premiere
at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2008
Photo Courtesy of Kasia Koniarz/Iron Cross Productions Ltd. Krakow, August 2007
NEW YORK, NY, February 15, 2008 – Two-time Academy Award® Nominee Roy Scheider, who sadly passed on February 10th, was one key scene shy of completing principal photography for what he hoped would be his great comeback performance in the upcoming revenge thriller IRON CROSS. Discussions are currently in progress with leading digital effects companies to finish the pivotal scene using the latest CGI technology. The feature-length debut of British writer-director Joshua Newton, will launch at the Venice International Film Festival in 2008.
Roy Scheider, widely recognized as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, was nominated for an Oscar® for his extraordinary performance as Detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection, and again for his sparkling portrayal of director Bob Fosse in All That Jazz. Scheider had been featured in more than 50 films; His upcoming credits include Dark Honeymoon (co-starring Daryl Hannah and Eric Roberts), and what is his final leading performance in the Joshua Newton film IRON CROSS.
IRON CROSS tells the story of Joseph, a retired New York police officer, played by Roy Scheider, who witnessed the massacre of his family in Poland in 1941. He travels to Nuremberg to visit his son Ronnie (Scott Cohen - Gilmore Girls, Cashmere Mafia) years after turning his back on him for rejecting a promising career in the NYPD and marrying a local artist, Anna (Calita Rainford - Return to House on Haunted Hill). No sooner does Joseph attempt to heal the rift with Ronnie, when he swears that living in the apartment above, under the false name of Shrager, (Helmut Berger - Ludwig, The Damned, The Godfather Part III) is the now aging SS Commander who committed the atrocity. With little hope of seeing him stand trial, Joseph talks Ronnie into exacting justice - and vengeance - and together they set out to kill him.
“Roy Scheider was one of the most talented and acclaimed actors of his generation. His versatility and riveting presence set him apart and made him the obvious choice to play such a complex, troubled character as Joseph. Roy was extremely passionate about this project and we became close during filming,” said Joshua Newton, writer, director and editor of the film. "He really was a brave man. I admired his fighting spirit and I am honored to have known and worked with him.”
The story is a very personal one for Newton, as it closely mirrors conversations and experiences with his own father Bruno Newton, who passed away last year during filming, and coincidentally like Scheider, from complications caused by myeloma. In memory of both Newton’s father and Scheider, 10% of Newton’s share of the film’s profits will be donated to the International Myeloma Foundation.
