The CW Cancels WWE SMACKDOWN!!

Published at:  Feb 08, 2008 5:14:46 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

“WWE Smackdown,” a staple of UPN and successor The CW since April 1999, is ending its CW run in May.

The WWE is reportedly now shopping the series to MyNet and NBC.

If “Smackdown” doesn’t find a new home, fans of scripted wrestling can continue to flock to WWE’s “ECW” on the SciFi Channel, “Raw” on USA, and the WWE’s endless string of pay-per-view specials.

Read all of TV Week’s story on the matter here.

    Vince the steroid pusher/enabler/etal.

    by pennsy

I haven't watched pro wrestling in almost 5 years; I had a steady diet of Pride and K-1 DVD's to tide me over; MMA is where it's at. And HDNet's coverage of M-1 Global's Yarennoka New Year's Eve card in Tokyo's Saitama Super Arena (the return of Fedor Emelianenko) may have been the best fight telecast I've seen in many a moon.

Raw was on a Viacom network (TNN, now spikeTV) but now WWE has 2 shows on NBC Universal along with specials (Saturday Night's Main Event) and appearances on shows (Project Runway and The Apprentice). I could see Smackdown going to a NBC Universal owned network. And Viacom currently has TNA Wrestling over on SpikeTV so I wonder if they may give them a shot on the CW to fill in the void.

First of all, I'm not gay, but I think use of the word "fag" is about the same as using the word "nigger", and as such should be reserved for bigots and members of the respective minority.
Now, the answer you requested: Why did Bravo become such a gay network? Because "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" was a huge hit, and because Bravo is an arts and theatre-related channel, and as such just happens to have a very gay audience. Anywhere there's art, you'll find the LGBT community.
Kind of like how TNN gets all the dumb white people, and FOX News gets all the dumb white people who think they're not dumb, but really *are* quite dumb and gullible.

Wrestling is fake, people have known that for a long time. It is entertainment. You know all those tv shows you watch, this is just like that. People have different tastes. Like who in their straight mind would watch something like Veronica Mars, even if Kristen Bell is hot? I would just get pics of her online or from a magazine.

    by decfx

If Smackdown is really done, the ECW guys will be pushed aside so the top tier Smackdown wrestlers get their spots. ECW as a show is pretty bad as is Raw and Smackdown. I hate to say after being a wrestling fan of WWE/WWF, I have to say TNA had a better product overall, including some of the best wrestling talent out there. Cena, HHH, Batista can't hold a candle to guys like Styles, Joe or Angle in the talent department.

And even then it was sucking pretty hard after WCW folded. It was never high art, but at least it had a few amusing things going for it. As far as I'm concerned, Vince has fucked things up beyond repair and really hasn't put anything that could pass for intelligent or amusing since the Rock and Mick Foley were in their prime. I'll grant them the first couple of Kurt Angle years, but that's about it.

Well...maybe Nascar, but even I dont understand that one. And ( I know how this is going to sound) but the difference between bi-sexual and gay is that most gays cannot get sexual or emotional pleasure from the opposite sex whereas someone who is bi-sexual can get equal amounts of satisfaction from both sexes.....I only know that because Im college educated and took a class...I swear.

If you think Kristen Bell is hot... You're gay.

    by zerocorpse

Look guys... She's skinny, like a teenaged boy. She doesn't have tits, like a teenaged boy. She's got a soft man-jaw, like a teenaged boy. She's got a squeaky voice, like a teenaged boy. She has no hips, like a teenaged boy. She has no ass, like a teenaged boy.
If a woman that has a boy's figure, a boy's voice, and a boy's face is what turns you on, then you're gay and you don't know it (or maybe you really DO).
Women have curves. Boobs, hips, butt... and they don't have lantern-jaws.
I bet the Kristen Bell fans think Ann Coulter is hot, too... Adam's Apple and all.
Yes, I know a lot about the LGBT community. I was a theatre major, among others, and I have been pretty close with a lot of gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals. I've only known a couple transsexuals... And I laughed my ass off when my former best friend (a raging homophobe) tried to put the moves on a transgendered woman (a man in the middle of a change), and I had to break it to him that he was just trying to get someone with a penis into bed.
You haven't seen funny until you've seen a guy realize he's been jerking off to fantasies about another guy without knowing it!
And by the way-- Bisexuals get a lot of flack from both sides of the fence. Heterosexuals accuse them of being gay but unwilling to admit it, and homosexuals say the same thing, but in a much more catty way.
By the way; Bisexual doesn't mean you find EVERYBODY attractive. It means you find SOME members of both genders attractive. Being open to both genders doesn't make the ugly people any better looking to a bisexual.

    The "Wellness" Program

    by buffywrestling

When this was adapted after Vince's steroid scandal, it became abundantly clear that it was bullshit. After the incident with Benoit, it became even more so. They've tightened it up since then, but it is still bullshit. I was in the business for awhile - that's were my nic comes from, btw - and it was prevalant and obvious. Drug regiems were discussed outright, doctors names passed on. Guys used to share pills. It's ignored because the sad fact it you have to be a certain bodytype to get somewhere. Yes, you can be athetically talented, but if you don't have the body, your chances of making it in the business decrease dramatically.

When Heath Ledger died, it brought me to mind of a lot a wrestlers who have died because of drugs. They take them at such a high dosage: when they leave off a couple of weeks and their tolerance drops and start again at the same high dosage, they OD. And just as the Pusher..er... Doctor who overprescribed Benoit, they should start looking into Hollywood's pattern of overmedicating talent. You know that their must be some doctor's who are pretty loose with their prescription pads just to get some famous picture on the wall of their office.ˇ

    Interesting

    by deejay

This news would "imply" that CW doesn't believe WWE will continue to cater to its core demographic and psychographic audiences. In the case that McMahon's company concurs with that rationale, we could eventually see a change in their programming strategy. Granted, that particular type of "cause and effect" wouldn't be consistent with McMahon's past behavior, so I see this playing out in a more complex fashion. Whatever happens, if you combine this news with the spate of bitter employees posting "shoot" interviews on YouTube, various aspects of the Benoit tragedy, the decrease in sales of new WWE DVDs and their potential involvement in a future Congressional hearing, you have to wonder if this is the point at which the organization's growth reaches its apex (unless they begin to make some real changes in their product)...

SK229, me and a buddy from work drove from

    by grammaton cleric binks

the middle of Connecticut to Queens, New York to find the Lost Battalion hall and watch ECW. It was a Friday night and we got out at noon on Fridays so we got there around 2 or three, found the place and a safe place to park our car, then spent the next few hours grabbing lunch, and hanging out at a nearby mall as there was nothing else to do. Anyway, this was when ECW was only broadcast on MSG and it only performed in Philly and Queens. So when the doors are ready to open we're in line chatting with all these guys around us, telling them we're from CT, and they're like man this is getting crazy, because no one drives two hours to ECW, but we did. I remember Juventud and Rey Jr. fought a killer match, the speed was amazing. The Eliminators were there, I think the Pit Bulls were too, but I don't recall. Dreamer, Sandman, Beulah, the Dudleys were also there. I can't remember everybody. I think Pittman was there. I don't think he had moved on to WWF yet, but this was post WCW time for him. All I can say is these guys gave a hell of a show. The audience was 98 percent guys, and even though they were allowed I don't think I saw anyone under 18. During the last match, or right before some announce comes out and says something like the NYC gaming commission says they need to be out by midnight, and we wouldn't make it. So then he says "You know what, FUCK the gaming commission." Of course we all start cheering and chanting. I had been to big league wrestling matches before, but to this day I have not seen anything better in the squared circle, and since ECW was bought out a while ago, I know I never will. Remember WWF and WCW didn't start to get harcore until they saw ECW siphoning their fans away.

Anybody remember the front row guy in the straw hat?

    by pennsy

At the ECW Arena? He was hilarious, along with their own Sign Guy next to him? ECW was teh shit, and it was clearly the best wrestling group in the country in the mid-90's. Country mile-length, even.

  • wrestling fans, let it be known that wwe will have no problem finding a new network for their show which has survived longer than any other sitcom or tv show, even The Simpsons. If nothing else, USA will pick up Smackdown or Vince will just merge the Smackdown roster with the Raw roster. Wrestling isn't going anywhere. Sorry to disappoint you people who think your entertainment is so superior.

and MMA is not where it's at

    by sick fixx

I don't want to see people hurt for real, with swollen heads, concussions, broken bones. Plus, the fights can end in a matter of moments as the last UFC show proved. The personalities of the fighters aren't always that captivating either. Sports Entertainment is where it's at, and where it always has been. People need to stop leaning on the conversational crutch that wrestling is fake, because every form of entertainment, including reality tv, which is ten times more mind numbing than pro wrestling ever was, are also fake.

    by sick fixx

But honestly, I'd prefer if Vince just merged the Smackdown roster with the Raw roster, and left ECW the second brand. Except for Torrie Wilson when she was still doing the stinkface and Chuck Palumbo going apeshit on Jamie Noble, Smackdown hasn't been watchable on its own for some time. Now, put all those stars on Raw, you have two or three year's worth of storyline potential.

    by sick fixx

When you come down on us with that cliche not-thinking-for-yourself line 'Wrestling is fake', you're not telling us anything new. And even though wrestling is 'fake' and choreographed and scripted, it doesn't change the fact that these guys are hitting each other to a certain degree in 'safe places'. They also suffer injuries that last well into their old age if they live that long, because the 'bumps' they take, i.e. falling from a clothesline, going through tables, chair shots to the head, all take a toll on their bodies.

    Also, rest assured that

    by sick fixx

if you stepped into a ring with a wrestler, even if he wasn't Hulk Hogan, but some little 100 pound Spike Dudley, they would know hundreds of ways to torture you and make wrestling very real for you, ways they don't use on their fake opponents. It's called 'shooting'. See, wrestling is a whole other world, there's no other business like it and no outsiders even care to investigate its fascinating history.

I am also rather surprised by the rather bigoted comments about wrestling, and the people that like to watch it.

The canceling of Smackdown reflects the change in the wind. The age of aggression and violence to solve problems is over...the new age of change will bring communication and understanding between America and the rest of the world. And McMahon and Co should be accountable for all the steroids being sold in his merry bunch of retards. We're right in a middle of a dumbass baseball scandal that even the Senate is now going over but those dumbass politicians aren't even trearing thru this league of 99.99999% steroid abusers, at least in Baseball they used it to help comeback from injuries and not all leaguers are involved, but in wrestling, the only ones not on the juice are ... well.. CW would be retarded to not try to keep it... one of the highest rated shows on it's network since it's inception... yeah, even over Buffy when tht moved over to UPN. Yes, WRESTLING had higher ratings than the beloved Buffy. I guarantee all the fucktards here putting down wrestling ate out of Bischoff's hnd and sucked Hogans cock during the NWO days. And he next time it's on an upcycle, they'll all be in love with wrestling again. Look cool, guys. Buy your John Cena gear now.
