Did You Read VANITY FAIR’s Article On That Crazy New STAR WARS Game?!

Published at:  Feb 08, 2008 6:23:22 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

This game sounds so incredible.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED is going to be arriving at stores with quite a bit of hype attached regarding its various physics engines and interactivity. All I care about is finally getting a chance to play a game where I can use all the craziest powers of the Force at full-blast. All the demo videos I’ve seen for this look incredible, and the article VANITY FAIR just published (their first ever on video games) is more than just a little bit breathless. For a publication as far outside the typical gaming demographic as this one to publish a story like this... well, maybe they really are up to something special.

God, I hope so. Can you imagine?

Hey guys - just wanted to point out the story that went live tonight (and is in the March issue of Vanity Fair).

It's the first time Vanity Fair has ever covered videogames, and the story about Star Wars: The Force Unleashed goes in depth into what we have cooking at LucasArts. Not only are there a bunch of new images and an exclusive video, but there are also several HUGE revelations about the story of the game in the article.

It's good stuff!

"A twist on the level of 'I am your Father.'" Given what they went on to say about how the birth of the rebellion is also an important part of this story, and it's a story about "redemption," it sounds like they are trying to say that, even as Darth Vader was mopping up the last of the Jedi, he was also the secret and clandestine founder of the rebel alliance, and it was all part of a large and far flung plan to eventually unseat Palpatine from the imperial throne. I think.

    by jollydwarf

This is nothing more than a fucking infomercial in print. The game will be about 6-8 hours long, will feature braindead enemy after braindead enemy, a 'narrative' that MAY get an 'honorable mention' in a fanfic contest limited to socially retarded people caught on videotape twirling sticks around like double-bladed lightsabers, and won't exactly look like "Gears of Star Wars". The Lego games will be more gratifying for adults at the end of the day. It will be the definitive "7" game. Looking forward to picking it up for twenty-five bucks about a year from now (half for the Achievements)!

this game can't possibly be good

    by smackfu

I'm sure it looks great to some retard from Vanity Fair (these people call tv shows 'skeins' for christ's sake). To non-gamers, really shitty games often look great. But to people who have played through all the previous Star Wars game offerings know what works and what doesn't. And the fundamental concept of these games is doomed to fail. Because ultimately, it all boils down to navigating a character through levels, and every time you run into a stormtrooper, or sith ninja or whatever, you just hit your Y button and lightning shoots out and lifts them off the ground and then they die and fall down. It looks cool in a 3 minute presentation, but when you sit down and play these games, it's extremely unfulfilling to just repeatedly use God like powers over and over and over again. Same with the Superman game from Xbox 360. For the first time it's a well-done game that makes up for all the previous superman offerings, but ultimately, it's a concept that can never work in a video game, because as amazingly cool as it is to be able to fly around a city and blow cars away with your breath and cleave a highway in two with your laser vision, after about 5 minutes you've really gotten all the enjoyment you're going to get out of doing that. Lucasarts used to pump out really original, fantastic star wars games. Shadows of the Empire, though a little rough as an FPS, was an amazing Star Wars experience, as was the Rogue Squadron series until they derailed it by trying to add new half-assed elements (like having to get out of your vehicle and run around). The sad thing is, the people at Lucasarts probably think people just aren't interested in Rogue Squadron, that interest just fizzled out. Instead of realizing that they fucked up Rogue Squadron III so completely that nobody is bothering to ask for a 4th.

    monorail77 - Wii lightsaber

    by ye not guilty

The article I read was in a dead tree magazine, and I don't recall which one right now, but here is another article I found using Google just now (remove spaces):

    http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/star-wars-the-force-unleashed/news/wii-lightsaber-set-to-disappoint/a-20080117113548345076/g-20060808163223978049

In short, while there will be lightsaber action in TF:U, players will not be swinging the Wiimote around like a saber. Instead, the Wii version will have Wii exclusive content. Prepare to be disappointed if you get the Wii version.

Check it out, and be sure to watch the video interview too: http://tinyurl.com/2a6b8e

Although I think the articles might be saying the same thing; no 1:1 mapped motion of Wiimote to lightsaber. Sounds like you'll make some canned "lightsaber moves" with the wiimote which will translate into lightsaber animations, basically like Lego Star Wars, but with more detail. Could be fun, but definitely not the full-fledged lightsaber wielding we were hoping for

They need to do a 1st person saber game right already

    by han cholo

Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy almost accomplished this but people preferred playing in 3rd person which sucked in my opinion. Plus the saber combat was too arcade like and limited. I always dreamt of a way that you could actually create your own moves using the mouse like an extension of your arm. Unfortunately there are movement limitations that come with it and other gameplay problems that would need to be worked out but I think that's the key to TRUE saber dueling on a game system or PC. I think if anything, the Wii almost has it right. I'm thinking that the Wii's version will be the most bought title and might even be a great selling point for the system. Seriously, if it comes anything close to what I'm thinking, I'm gonna buy a Wii.

    by docpazuzu

...the first time I played Dark Forces back in 1995 and heard the John Williams music while gunning down stormtroopers with a blaster. That was the shit, no doubt about it.

Or how about the sequel? Fucking people up with a lightsaber? Nice. The most awesome moment in that game was the level where you had to delve deep into a starship to complete a mission, and after it was done the ship started plummeting towards a planet's surface UPSIDE DOWN and you had to scramble back the way you came (on the ceilings, basically) as the thing shuddered and buckled, hoping to reach the exit before the thing crashed.

    Good times, good times...

    Female Imperial Officers

    by zerocorpse

I know, I know. Cue the standard film fanboy's rant about how the Expanded Universe "ruins" Star Wars. I hear it all the time.
However, there are plenty of female Imperials in the books. Not just the Expanded Universe novels, but the trilogy novels as well. They may not be major characters, but they are indeed members of the Empire. Palpatine wasn't a woman-hater. He promoted people who could get the job done-- As long as they weren't aliens. (He WAS a bigot)
There was even a Hasbro "Female Imperial Officer" action figure: http://tinyurl.com/2k9bej
As far as high-ranking Imperials go, there was only one female I can remember: Admiral Daala. She was exceptional, and cold-blooded, and earned the Emperor's trust through tenacity and action. You could call Mara Jade a "high ranking Imperial Officer" too, since she was the Emperor's Hand, and held a rank that was in the same neighborhood as Darth Vader.
Also, back before the current books and merchandising happened, there was a Star Wars comic book from Marvel (70s and early 80s), and there were a few female Imperial officers in there, too. Shira Brie, Captain Traal, Captain Plikh, and a few unnamed others. You can hardly call female Imperials a "new" thing. They've been writing female Imperial characters since before Empire Strikes Back hit theaters.
Besides this, you've got members of the Senate who remained highly ranked until Palpatine dissolved the Senate just prior to "A New Hope"... Where you you think Mon Mothma and Princess Leia came from? They were technically high-ranking members of the Empire before they formed the Rebellion. Yes, the Emperor was slightly sexist (he knew women to be capable of being very devious and clever, and thus distrusted them) but he knew a useful asset when he saw one, and he was wise enough to exploit people when they proved beneficial to his cause, gender or species be damned.

    by zerocorpse

You must be one of those twerps that thinks crap like JRPGs and anime-style hack-n-slashers are "good" games. Either that, or you're too young to have seen LucasArts best stuff.
Ballblazer, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max Hit The Road, Outlaws, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Rebel Assault, and so on...
If you don't like (or never played) any of these games, then I guess you're just hopeless. LucasArts DID push the envelope at one time, and used to produce some great games. I'm very happy to see them being pushed to innovate again, and the fact this new game will be a few years ahead of others in terms of game engines is step in the right direction.
It's also pretty fucking cool that they got the guy who does Chad Vader to play Darth Vader. That is geek love, right there.

    Agree, ZeroCorpse

    by thegreatwhatzit

LucasFilm's past track record includes the "Monkey Island" odyssey (exceptional writing & arresting images) and the game adaptation of INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. But Lucas still corrupts; as a result of his participation, the ROBOT CHICKEN "spoof" of STAR WARS was grievously compromised (extremely lame). I know that FAMILY GUY launched their own spoof but, frankly, I'm a bit tired of that series.

    LucasArts...

    by theallseeingeye

Most of the recent star wars games, (infact it might actually be everything for the last 8 years or so), wasn't actually made by LucasArts. They simply published them. Raven, Pandemic and Bioware are just some of the outside studios that LucasArts farmed out their work to; they don't have any in-house talent to work on genres popular with todays games, ie, FPS. Even this new game is developed by an outside firm. However, the tech demo of this game engine simply staggers belief. Yes, you can say it'll follow the same old formula but i think Force Unleashed is definately going to re-energise the franchise, in gaming terms of course.

ZeroCorpse, when you say Rebel Assault, did you mean the shitty Dragon's Lair-style CD game where you'd pretty much go left or right? Don't get me wrong, I'm old and I love all those other classic Lucasarts games. Rebel Assault sucked balls though. Maybe you're talking about the Ninty Rogue Squadron games?

I loved SNES Super Star Wars too. My wife is still scarred by the Jawa theme droning on forever because for some reason I just couldn't get past it for ages. Yes I'm lame.

And yeah this new tech (interested to see how they use it in GTA4) seems pretty awesome, even if Lucasarts are only really interested in generating assets and gameplay automatically rather than have to rely on expensive and annoying artists and coders. I keed. A bit.

LucasArts never made a good game?

    by lynxpro

That was one of the stupidest things I've read on AICN. The first two LucasArts Games, aka LucasFilm Games, aka Atari/LucasFilm Games, were hits straight out of the ballpark...Rescue on Fractalus and more importantly, BallBlazer. BallBlazer rocked, whether you were playing it on an Atari 800/XL/XE/XEGS, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, or a Commodore 64. There was even a remake on the PS1 a few years back too.

    Dark Forces

    by salamander

Have to say I was a huge fan of Dark Forces/Jedi Knight with that Kyle character. The scenes/story were okas the ingame/movie music set the scene briliantly ramping up when in battle and gave a great experience.

This game does look awesome and I shall get it for my xbox but have to say I'd be more excited if they brought out Dark Forces Jedi Knight 3... Oh I loved the original (it think it was) Rogue Sqaudron when I played it ages ago nice little arcade game but way out classed by lego starwars ! lol

Looking forward to indiana jones lego game but with only the the first three films you just know they will release another version of the game with the next movie to fork cash out for 8(

What was the name of that stupid poor man's Han Solo

    by half vader

character? No, not the guy in Firefly, the one from the Shadow of the Empire stuff. Even his ship was a poor man's Falcon.

    He sucked.

You mean "Dash Rendar". And Shadows was a pretty good storyline.

The story-line may have been O.K., I'll concede that, but the character still sucked. Did they think they were fooling anyone?!
