This Spy Seen GET SMART!

Published at:  Feb 08, 2008 6:22:01 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I’ve been watching GET SMART episodes while laid up sick this week. I’ve got this box set here of every single episode, and as I watch, I realize how little I actually watched of the show when I was young. I remember the credits, and I think it was a show that came on before something I liked, so I only ever saw the ending every day. If I saw more, it was because I was bored and waiting, not because I was a fan.

I am now. I’m impressed by how crisp and smart the comedy writing on the series was week after week, and by the way the show actually got better as it wore on, not worse.

So can this film live up to the name? Even a little?

Let’s see what this spy thought:

Hey guys,

Just thought i would give you my thoughts on my recent outing last thursday to see a test screening for the upcoming summer "blockbuster" GET SMART directed by Peter Segal, and starring Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway and others. Not to mention Zod himself......Lets just say the test screening was seen only by like 50 people tops.. and i think i saw Mr. Segal there in the back, not sure though.

Now i havent seen much of the original get smart, so i'm gonna base this review off what i saw on screen and whatever i wikipedia after the movie.

the first 2 acts are great alot of banter between characters and it moves well. lots of physical comedy from Carrell whichis awesome and he has some swell lines too. He seemed a bit monotoned through out the movie though.

Anne Hathaway as agent 99 was good as she can be, i feel that she needs to loosen up because i couldnt believe the chemistry between her and Carrell.

The rock aka dwayne johnson is cool as the suave agent who likes to back up Maxie...lol

ZOD.. terrance stamp.. man all i kept hearing when he talked was "Kneel before Zod"

i know this was a quick review but let me just say the laughs were good for like an hour after that though the last 45 minutes felt forced aside from the stupid idiot that laughed like a hyena at every line.

If you use this

U can call me
Optimus Whine

The thinest review I ever read

I saw a film - it had 4 actors in it - it had some fun moments.

    Looks absolutely horrible to me...

    by sledge hammer

...there wasn't one genuine laugh in any of the trailers released so far, and Carrell's schtick is amazingly grating just in those snippets I've seen. I'm sure it'll make money, but then again, so does a lot of shit. Me, I'll be taking a pass and saving my money for something that doesn't make me cringe every 4.5 seconds.

Wow, that's like the most poorly written review I have ever read. It's like it was a text message review. Slow day for reviews AICN?

    Sounds like waste of talent

    by donniedorko

But I don't really know more about this movie than before I read the "review"... "the Rock" should take a break from comedy and choose some real popcorn-action roles. He can pull them off, this is for retiring actionheroes, not upcoming.

Should've known the review would suck balls...

    by blanket-man

...since AICN couldn't be bothered to use correct grammar in the title. Then again, a good 75% of the headlines on this site are indecipherable.

    by 2for2true

Aside from the fact Hollywood is hellbent on forcefeeding us all recycled cornball TV shows, this strikes me as -particularly insulting. Just because the studio execs have the imagination of an apple core doesn't excuse them from raping what was a pretty wonderful little show back in its day. Someone should drop the cone of silence on their fucking brains once and for all.

look, I know you just got married, so you must be a little distracted. But between this review and the review of the new stones doc, I have become officially disgusted. Bad spelling, punctuation, and is there even a point to this review. Uncle Rico makes better arguments than this guy. It's not fair to us. Dammit, try harder.

    Monotone delivery...

    by zerocorpse

Clearly, Steve has been studying Don Adams' acting technique for "Get Smart", and I'm pleased that he seems to be staying true to that style of speech. That was one of the comedic elements of the show that MADE it what it was.
I'd watch a new Get Smart TV series staring Steve Carrell .
