Oliver Reed and GLADIATORS

Published at:  May 05, 1999 2:04:16 AM CDT

Hey folks... Harry here. One initial fear that has arisen from Oliver Reed's unfortunate passing has been his part in GLADIATOR the upcoming Roman Gladiator movie featuring Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed as a Gladiator trainer.

Would he remain in the film, or would they pull a 'Sydney Pollack' on him and reshoot all his scenes with another actor. Well, according to the Malta Newspapers that are covering his story... Well... He had allegedly come very close to completing his role in the film, so it looks like he'll remain in the final print.

So it looks like we'll have at least one last film to have him woo all of us. Hazar, I say. Yesterday I bought a CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF one sheet to remember Reed by, and now Gladiator is even more exciting for me. I must see the legendary Oliver Reed's last role. I want to see him train the hell out of them huns. Kicking the shit out of them as we only thought we saw in Spartacus.

Sigh.... Though I wish I had another 30 upcoming films to see him in. Sigh.... Not fair.

He Rode in and Out of Reality on a Wave of Alcohol

    by gyrobot

He was as English as they come.

Without a doubt the best story I know was of him in a Spanish restaurant during the filming of "The Four Musketeers". He stripped off completely and jumped into a huge ornamental fish tank. When police came to arrest him he cried "YOU CAN'T TOUCH ME! I'M ONE OF THE FOUR MUSKETEERS"
If Heaven is a bar that evrybody's trying to get to you bet Ollie's already barged his way to the front. Good on ya y'bastard!

God bless Ollie, he died on the piss. His drinking stories rank among the very best Keith Moon ones. Let's have another bloody drink!

I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name, and....

I am so glad I have my stills of his films...and doubly glad that he'll remain in The Gladiator. He was on AMC last night in Great Scout and Cat House Thursday, and afterwards, Dorian made special mention of Reed's good performance. By what he said, it's unlikely the comments were made after Reed's death. Also, "The Girl Getters" ("The System") apparently just came out on video. Thanks again for keeping us posted, Harry!

    He made me howl

    by thunderball

I can still remember my parents taking me to see "The Curse of the Werewolf" when I was a couple of years old. It was probably the first movie I ever seen in the theater. God, I loved it. When Reed turned into that monster at the end, with the moon beaming through the bars and he tears open his cell-door, wow, goosebumps popped up all over my body. That scene and that performance are forever imbedded in my brain and are what made me a fan of horror (particularly Hammer) films. Oliver, I look forward to sharing a brewski with you one day in the upstairs balcony of heaven.

"Black leather, black leather, smash, smash, smash...!

    by uncapie

One of Reed's earliest moments was that on an extra! Yes, an extra with no dialogue in and episode of "The Third Man" television series in the fifties starring Michael Renne and Johnathon "Dr. Smith" Harris! He walked into a room displayed some jewels on a silver plate(No dialogue whatsoever!) to them, then walked away. Who says an extra can't make it in this business! Go for it you thespians!

    All this talk of heaven...

    by maniaq

He was a great actor, a real character, and could drink the hardiest of them under the table any day! Nowadays, apart from the various pieces of celluloid and rust on stickytape he has impressed upon, he serves to keep the worms happy (and drunk!)...

He will, no doubt, be quite well preserved for another year or so, before succombing to his own fermentation processes. I sincerely hope he has had more of an influence on the world than moving a few wellwishers to having a drink in his honour - time will tell...

    RIP you scoundrel!

I guess I'll never know whether or not he actually has a tattoo on his penis, as has been claimed.

    Oliver Reed

I'm really saddened that Oliver Reed is dead. He had magnificent presence. The older he became, the better he got just like Clint Eastwood. I can't wait to see him in Gladiator.
