BIONIC!! I-SPY!! AVATAR!! ME!! TREK!! MST3K!! GILMORE!! OC!! Herc’s Super-Exciting Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Feb 06, 2008 2:41:40 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

In August 2006, Rhino/WEA released “Mystery Science Theatre Vol. 10,” on which Joel, Mike and their robot puppets made sport of “Godzilla vs. Megalon,” “Swamp Diamonds,” “Teen-Age Strangler” and “The Giant Spider Invasion.” Then Toho (or somebody) tapped Rhino/WEA on the shoulder and pointed out that it never really secured the DVD rights to “Megalon,” so Vol. 10 disappeared from store shelves and became an instant collector’s item that now fetches north of $190 a copy.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 10.2 is the replacement set, which swaps “Giant Gila Monster” for the verboten Godzilla movie. If I understand correctly, early MST3K stars (and current “Cinematic Titanic” stars) Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein even contribute a bit of new material delving into the substitution.

Those who purchased the now-super-expensive “Megalon” version of Vol. 10 (and those who haven’t) can purchase the MST3K-enhanced “Giant Gila Monster” as a single movie from Rhino here.

The reason Linda Hamilton isn’t snuggling up to Ron Perlman on the cover of Beauty and the Beast: Season Three is because her character died in the second hour and Linda Hamilton disappeared for the final 10 of the show’s 12-episode third season. The final installment aired on CBS Aug. 4, 1990. “Terminator 2” began principal photography two months and five days later.

Herc’s Popular Pricing Pantry

If ever series-sets were priced to move right out of the gate! I give you I-Spy: Season One and I-Spy: Season Two: Each contains 28 one-hour episodes on five discs of this acclaimed and groundbreaking series for $13.99.

That price is so low I kinda think it might be a mistake. Just buy these sets so you’ll have an extra stocking stuffer near Christmas. Or you can use them for coasters. I can’t believe they’ll ever sell for less.

Last week Paramount slashed – almost in half – the prices of a few seasons of its latter-day “Star Trek” series which had retailed in the prior week for $116.99. But we all moaned “Still not cheap enough” and this week Paramount has cut the prices even further, and on ALL the “Voyager” and “Enterprise” season sets:

Star Trek Enterprise: Season One
PRICE TWO WEEKS AGO: $116.99
PRICE LAST WEEK: $69.98
PRICE NOW: $62.99

Star Trek Enterprise: Season Two

Star Trek Enterprise: Season Three

PRICE NOW: $62.99

Star Trek Enterprise: Season Four
PRICE TWO WEEKS AGO: $116.99

PRICE NOW: $62.99

Star Trek Enterprise: The Complete Series
PRICE LAST WEEK: $219.99
PRICE NOW: $211.99

Star Trek Voyager: Season One
PRICE TWO WEEKS AGO: $116.99
PRICE LAST WEEK: $69.98
PRICE NOW: $62.99

Star Trek Voyager: Season Two

Star Trek Voyager: Season Six
PRICE TWO WEEKS AGO: $116.99
PRICE LAST WEEK: $116.99
PRICE NOW: $62.99

Star Trek Voyager: Season Seven
PRICE TWO WEEKS AGO: $116.99
PRICE LAST WEEK: $69.98
PRICE NOW: $62.99

The third and final and completely wonderful third season of “Veronica Mars” (the one with the 12-minute fourth-season “Veronica FBI” pilot among its extras) is still selling at the moment $19.99!! That’s 67% Off!! (It was $37.99 two weeks ago.) The first two seasons have been momentarily encheapened as well:

$16.99 Veronica Mars: Season One <--- VASTLY ENCHEAPENED!!
$19.99 Veronica Mars: Season Two <--- VASTLY ENCHEAPENED!!
$19.99 Veronica Mars: Season Three <--- VASTLY ENCHEAPENED!!

Warner Bros. Home Video’s girlish generosity, it turns out, is not limited to Keith and Leann Mars’ little girl. All four seasons of “The O.C.” are available for $16.99!! That’s a whole season for a dollar less than the “Epic Movie” DVD and 72% off on the latter two seasons (the ones with Taylor Townsend and the mini-Coop and the episode that tells you how it all ends).

Also, all seven seasons of “Gilmore Girls,” a favorite of mine and Mrs. Harry Knowles, are down to $19.99 per season.

The first three seasons of “One Tree Hill” are available at the same price, in case you’re into poorly written teen sports drama.

    by zekmoe

No more. I've bought buffy and B5 when they were between $20 and $30, and they've been worth it. But would I have paid $70? No way. Same goes for the other. You've made your millions. $20 or nada from me. Or maybe free download.

    by noahtall

It's fantastic. Now the two least popular Star Trek series can be had for only twice the price of a brand new season of 24. In fact slightly less than twice the price. Yeah, this is why my dvd shelves currently have full collection of pretty much every other sci-fi or fantasy series that has been released but Trek in all versions is conspicuously missing. Well, except for DS9 which I got from Japan for about $120 for the entire series.

    by big jim

Got both seasons at HMV ("2 for $30" deal).Who will pay for "Bionic Woman", other than family members of cast & crew? How many episodes is on this. Did they hold back the good episodes for the DVD?Yes, I still agree, Star Trek, even at half price, is still 3 times too much. Herc, can you do a little investigative journalism and find out why they are so expensive? Is Paramount really that greedy, or is it due to residual deals with Rodenberry's estate that make the price so prohibitive?

The reason why Trek DVD prices are so absurd...

    by osmosis jones

...is because TREKKIES WILL BUY ANYTHING. If the season sets were $300 a pop, they'd STILL buy them. Fuck, at least the X-Files sets came down to a reasonable $40 a season several years back. It's exclusionary shit like this why so few new people are willing to enter the Trek universe.

    Bionic, just let it die

    by gboybama

The problem with this show wasn't "fine tuning" or lack of action. Rather, there was was too much fine tuning by the suits looking to please a certain advertising demographic and not enough creative freedom for writers to take the show somewhere interesting. There was plenty of action as well. But, who cares when character motivations are unclear / inconsistent and there's not one genuinely sympathetic character on the show.

    TOS Remastered/Trek Pricing

    by bytor

Remastered TOS was released on combo HD-DVD/DVD discs; they've got no announced plans to release it any other way.And here's some irony for you. Old-timers will remember that back in the early days of home video, movies were ass-expensive ($80-$130). Then, one day, a brave studio decided to try an experiment: they'd release a movie for a lot less ($39.99), figuring that sales would skyrocket and they'd make a lot more money. Sure enough, the video was a runaway success, and in mere months $29.99 was the standard retail price for movies, and it kept falling from there. The studio? Paramount. The movie? Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.I'm a huge Trek fan, Paramount, but I haven't bought one damned DVD set yet. Why? Because you price them like ass.

    Bionic won't be back...

    by kid z

...Neither will Friday Night Lights, Heroes, etc. etc. etc... Silverman and Zucker are going to go with an all-reality format, just watch. Proof:

"But recent moves by NBC and comments from Silverman and Jeff Zucker seem to hint that NBC actually might be moving towards more reality and games shows. Zucker says he's getting rid of expensive pilots, which in itself isn't a bad thing (I'm sick of expensive, incredible pilots that lead to a mediocre series), but it could be another clue that they are changing the way they do business. Zucker also says that NBC might stop doing upfronts, and let's not forget that Silverman himself said just a few weeks ago that "In every other country in the world, the majority of prime-time programming is unscripted...It also has to do with demographics. Young people like this kind of programming...Time periods may be lost to scripted shows."

...Back when the strike started I predicted this and you guys stomped all over me. But now our fears are coming true. Told ya so!
