Englund As Freddy in ELM STREET Remake?? No Big Shock Here, But...
Merrick here...
Last week, we learned that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes gang was gearing up to remake A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.
The first question that popped to many people's minds (besides "Why?") was: "What about Robert Englund? Will he be Freddy again? He's Freddy..."
Not surprisingly, word is now filtering out that Englund does not appear to be part of the equation.
Shock Till You Drop says...
A number of industry sources recently phoned in to shed some light on the early discussions going on behind-the-scenes regarding "Nightmare"...and none of them include Englund starring as Krueger.
The franchise facelift includes discovering a new actor to polish up the finger knives and play the iconographic dream role Englund has practically made his second skin since '84.
...in an article you can find HERE.
The idea of someone else as Freddy will certainly ruffle a few feathers. On the other hand...presuming this is a re-launch of the franchise from the ground up (as it appears to be)...it's certainly understandable that they'd re-cast part to a performer without baggage/the weight of pre-association; a cleaner start will come about that way.
But, still, this isn't exactly the same thing as recasting Leatherface, for example. Englund performed his character...Freddy is a defined personality...where as Leatherface more-or-less lumbered along. ELM STREET is a whole different scenario than CHAINSAW; hope these factors are taken into consideration when they're putting this project together.
More on this as more comes in...

I probably should have actually read the article...
-
this sucks
-
almost first: anyways, i would have liked it if englund was there to some extent... ANY extent
-
I hope it's Miley Cyrus.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if they just used CGI and couple it with someone's mocap and/or voice work.
-
This whole project is an unnecessary cash in. I don't care how good it is, it still sucks.
-
Do you think that they would relaunch with a 50 something actor...they need a 20 something hollywood "it" guy so that this series can continue on for the next 10 years without a hitch. FOOKING GAY. Robert is Freddy.

-
for a second there, I thought his was going to be an article about Englund playing Freddy being locked down.
-
Didn't he say once before that he wasn't going to have anything to do with this series... then came back for two more? We'll see if it sticks.
-
I posts it twice.
-
and for a sec i was riding the giants win and feeling great. Now this shit...just do a great sequel. What is so hard ppl
-
Is this a typo or is this a shifty way of trying to make a statement?
-
Write is probably the wrong word, it's more akin to finger painting with each other's shit, but since they've successfully raped Transformers and Star Trek, I'm sure they'd love to ruin a Freddy film too.
And obviously Bay's company won't want to cast Englund, that would run the risk of making parts of the film actually good and they'll be looking for something uniformly shit. -
. . . then I'm glad Englund won't be in it. Fucking bullshit.
-
It amazes me that they want to remake this series AND THEY WANT TO DO IT WITHOUT the man who defined this series. Freddy is not Freddy WITHOUT Robert Englund under the makeup. Anyone can put on a hockeymask or a bbq apron and stomp around.
Freddy is more than that. These assholes don't get it. I hope Englund busts into their production, takes a big shit on the director, and runs off to star as Sam Witwicky in Transformers: 40 Years Later. -
That'll complete the glass shard ass raping of this process.
-
Englund was great, but if it has to be re-cast, what about Billy Zane? He definitely showed the charisma needed for the role in Demon Knight. He would just need to add more grit. The makeup covering up his pretty face would do half the job.
-
Bring on Ben Foster. Just watch 3:10 to Yuma and you will agree he can be badass. Just drop the corny one liners. I hope Platinum Dunes doesn't ruin this like they did Amityville Horror. I had such high hopes.....
What do you guys think?
-
RIP Hollywood.

I love Freddy and Jason and Michael all the 80's slasher horror stuff. I grew up on it. It was great for its time but everyone has to admit the slasher thing is kind of dated, even the Scream movies the "great slasher relaunch," has fizzled. Freddy was alway more fun to watch though he was never just a slasher. The was always more od that odd psychological dream aspect, and the fact that he could do or be almost anything, within the limits of 80's SFX. But you know, we just don't need any more Horror remakes. We don't need anymore Japanese/American Horror remakes. What we need and seem sorely lacking is our own imagination for horror, you can't tell me there isn't a single screenwriter out there with a great idea, hell maybe even a good script. Because I'm telling you, a new idea, a good fresh idea for horror, would sell so many more tickets and get so many more butts in seats than these damn rehashed ass remakes. Of course studios go for the easy money, hell even if the new Halloween remakedidn't do great in theaters its more than paying for itself by mad DVD rentals and sales. Where's the originality people?
-
Ben Foster could really take the character in an interesting direction. This may sound odd, but my only problem with him might be hight. He seems on the short side, but I really don't know Englund's hight either, so who knows. Ben would need a good director though to help him shape a performance the fans could get behind, and that's the doubtful to happy. Either way, good call.
-
it's just a soulless cash in
-
...Johnny Depp as Krueger would rock.
-
Ben Foster has that creepy quality that Englund could always pull off so well. The voice the slightness of his frame that made you not fear him physically (aside from the glove), but mentally because you just knew he was gonna come at you with so crazy-assed serial killer fantasy. Its the mad eyes and the stillness right before you die. Ben's got it. check him out in Hostage too, movie was only okay, but again he put in solid work as the bad guy; he was the stand out.

I'm more interested in what the new Freddy will look like!
by derlanghaarige
Same old Pizzaface or Davy Jones-like CGIed actor that looks more like the concept that Cravon originally had in mind?
-
Mother Effing B.S. I bet if you asked everyone you see for the rest of the week, you'd get one or two crazy assholes who think this MIGHT be a good idea, and then you should never talk to those crazy assholes ever again.
-
You're exactly right and not just with horror. With all of this remake fad.
IMO the reason new horror is such a problem is because of the state of the world right now. Historically dark comedy and horror flourish when times are good, people have money and war is a far away concept in other lands (IE the 80's & 90's). In times when the economy is shit, and the news is filled with explosions and death horror tends to become stale and hollow.
Oh and there might be screenwriters out there with ideas but they're on strike so...
Personally I think Hollywood has needed a kick in the ass for a long time. People like Spielberg, Lucas, and Coppola might be making turds now (well maybe not Coppola) but they really shook things up in their day.
We need something like that again. I think there's directors and writers out there who could do it...just need a studio that isn't run by chicken shits. -
Why in god's name would you post a sentence like this:"...hope these factors are taken into consideration when they're putting this project together."when you know god damn well Platinum Dunes are doing no such thing. the only thing these cocksuckers consider is the bottom line. if they have to rape a few franchises in the process, so be it.
-
That always bothered me about Englunds look it wasn't really burn-like. My great uncle, god rest him, was severly burned in a car crash when I was a kid, his face his hands, about 65% of his body. He lived until a couple years ago and was a great guy but as a kid I was always scared shitless of him. There is a smoothness to real burns and an outward warpping of how you know a person should look that the filmers could really play with. I don't like the CG idea for the character as a whole, just dream kills and SFX. I always pictured Freddy just being as scared as he was at the moment of death anyway. so there seems like there'd be a logical stopping point to the burn effect pefore CG would be needed too heavily beyond the nose or fingers maybe.
-
if maybe a bit young..... http://imdb.com/name/nm0004936/
-
I wanted him for the Joker, but I bet he is capable of some great creepy un-englund Kruegerness. Did I just say that? Sheesh.
-
Good. That's $10 more in tha bank for me.
-
she'd be fucking great. Either her or Barbara Streisand.
-
This SUCKS. You would think after the success of "Freddy VS. Jason" they`d stay with Robert. Yeah he`s old, but who cares, you wouldn`t even know with the makeup and everything.
-
Did you see Graham McTavish as the Brit nutcase merc in Rambo? He has a similar look to Englund and he lays it on so thick in that movie you were laughing even as you were kind of scared of him. I could see him under the makeup
-
He is an up and coming star. Sounds great for a film but someone like Ben who likes to go from role to role and try new things, def doesn't want to be sterotyped as the new Freddy Krueger. Love England but what has he done since? 2001 Maniacs I liked but he is really just known for Freddy.
-
I'm with it
-
The answer is YES.
-
Robert Englund is coming for you.Meanwhile, I'm coming for Heather Langenkamp. In my pants.

I thought Eugland was going to star in a prequel before he gets burnt. Why the fuck would they reboot the character? This isn't James Bond, it's a horror series that doesn't require rebooting. This is a faggot cash grab and it's driving me crazy.
-
There is less than nothing cool about it. Unless you think it's cool to see a creatively bankrupt group of dickheads destroy some great horror.
-
True story. He's kind of a lonely old tramp now. It was a bit sad, really.
-
freddy, jason, myer, and all their z-grade horror friends... why cant they all stay dead once and for all? it boggles the mind that they became so popular in the first place. seriously, you guys keep blaming hollywood for making turd, but then these kind of turds keep making money.

jesus, that fucking awful programme was a source of distress for me growing up.
-
I thought they were pretty crap in the first place - bogeyman made real who stalks you in your dreams - shitfestival.
I know they're banking on the built-in audience supporting this but fuck it, start a new mythology that won't invariably have people comparing with the previous films and ultimately condeming the follow-ups to DTV.
Oh fuck, I think I just figured out what they're going to do with this remake - Kruger stalks you via the Internet...sweet baby jeebus! -
Actually, I guess there are differences, since those were based on books, but did people scream when Christopher Lee played Dracula instead of Bela Lugosi? Maybe they did, and if AICN was around back in the 50's, there'd be the same discussion. Or not.
-
Agreed, Freddy doesnt need to come back, the series has had its day and we dont need a remake or a reboot. However some of you guys make good points. I think the first thing that pisses us off so much is that we know if the right people handled this movie, and in the right way, this could be an amazing movie. The problem is we know that wont happen. Englund we always be Freddy, we know. But I dont think hes the only one who could pull of a good Freddy. Foster would be a cool choice but I dont see it going that way, hes moving up and I dont think hed wanna get stuck as Freddy at this point. About the burns, I agree, I love the original look, but it always bugged me that it didnt look like Freddy was really burned. I think if the burn stuff was real looking it could add a whole new level of fucked up and creepy to the film. Now we all know that effects do not a good movie make, but they can def. add to one if done the right way and not half assed or to excess. It'd be great to use the tech we have now and really do some amazing shit they couldnt do in the 80's. The major thing to nail for this obviously is the story, the character the atmosphere, etc. Thats why the first Nightmare anyway, is so great, its not just some lame slasher. Nothings gonna make the original go away or suck, so I'm not gonna shit b/c theyre making new ones, it has potential to be sweet but there are a lot of elements that need to come together to make that happen. Heres hoping
-
It's "No Shit Sherlock", as in Sherlock Holmes. A 'shylock' is a loan shark.
-
Instead of Freddy arms growing really long and scary, it could be his nose!! Count Floyds would be given shivers on his goosebumps.
-
...is Foster. That kid is as annoying as fuck. I'm seriously getting sick of these "intense" young actors copping mannerisms from older established actors and chewing up the scenery in everything they're in (Foster thinks he's Brad Dourif). They need to take Foster and Ryan Gosling, seal 'em up in a rocket, and shoot 'em into the Sun.
-
is that he's a good actor??? he'd ge great...but only if they want to make a good film and not some quick cash teeny slasher garbage. If the script and director are good...I say go for it Ben.
-
Wishing Platinum Dunes comes up with something original...
-
England just played Freddie three years ago in Freddy vs. Jason. If they want him to do this one, I'm sure he could. With the makeup, it doesn't matter how much older England himself looks, because Freddy will look the same. And for those who want a more gruesome Krueger, check out the last Nightmare movie, "New Nightmare" from 1990 or so. Craven re-did Freddy's look for that, with more burns and creepier eyes.
-
I really prefer the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's take, A Nightmare on My Street.
-
DamnMichaelBay!
-
YOU TALENTLESS FUCK.
-
Start fresh and this time go Scary...kinda how it all started.
-
3:10 to Yuma was fucking corny and Foster was a bitch in big boys clothes. Come on, we can do better than this. Where's all the Crispin Glover love you guys showed for him playing the Joker? Seems to me he'd make a better Freddy than Joker.
-
Who cares?
-
as Wacky Bumbling Freddy. Or Carrot Top...you wouldn't even need any makeup.
-
there are horror movies, i mean real horror movies(notice the best ones need no gore), and then there's this subgenre of halloween mask killers with kitchen appliance hunting down horny teenagers. you can change the masks between these clowns and it wont make a difference since they're all the same movie. horror? more like comedy.
-
Has a talkshow he runs out of his living room in LA. www.tomgreen.com. Good stuff most of the time, semi big guests (Val Kilmer)
-
Wes Craven Whores his old movies and characters again! None of his stuff is any use anyway cept the first Nightmare on ElmSt.That recent Werewolf one with Christina moonface was unwatchable!
-
But the posts about why Ben Foster or the like wouldn't want to do it are valid too. If this is a successful remake/reboot, more decided by the money it brings in than anything else in Hllywood's eyes; there will be sequals as surely as there will be blood. Odds are whatever actor is cast will have a clause for at least one or two sequals. If they are sucessfull, ironicly, especially if they're good then the same way we say Robert Englund is Freddy to us the next generation it could be the new guy. There goes his career. He is that character. Young actor, great performance in an iconic role equals mark hamill: Skywaler-he had to find voiceover because he was Luke to most people. Nemoy=Spock. Chris Reeve=Superman. Great actors but they never recovered professionally from the iconic status they gained. I'd be hesitant to touch the project too. No matter how great the director or script.
-
I've always thought that a restart to the series would be a good move. Even the original is kinda lame really. A hardcore remake suits me fine.
-
do most child murdering pedophiles look like Ben Foster because they don't look like monsters in the first place because then the kids would run away at first sight. Look at your local sex offenders web site. The baby rapers are always the ones who look like skippy the next door neighbors kid who just hasn't moved out yet. Some look like uncle Chuck the "funny uncle" but you get my point. lol
-
burn victims have no hair on their head, no nose, and no ears. Often they have no lips - they are essentially an egg shaped head with two pinholes for nostrils and a thin line for a mouth. Almost fetal in a sort of way.
Thats what Freddy should have looked like. -
C'mon Wes, the Scream series and Red Eye should have let you bank some bucks. The Hills Have Eyes remakes, as much as they didn't need to exist, make sense because I bet more people heard of the original then have seen it. And it was a pretty low budget production. Nightmare, though, is your signature creation. Hell, that series helped make NewLine the major player they are today..It's just sad that Bay continues to mine signature material (Chainsaw, Hitcher..this) for his remake mill.
-
"Write is probably the wrong word, it's more akin to finger painting with each other's shit, but since they've successfully raped Transformers and Star Trek, "
Ah the internet. Where every success is a failure. I won't call you any names or anything which seems more suited for you, I just feel sorry for you that you can't enjoy things.
I wasn't aware that you've seen Star Trek. How was it? -
Rainn Wilson as Rainn Wilson is scary enough, I don't need nightmares.
-
To target key demographic. Diamond encrusted spinning knives on his glove. Nick cannon as Freddy Lamar Jackson Kruger, betrayed and murdered by his bichez, Freddy's back and hez gonna get paid. Also starring the cast of Bring it on II. Coming from MTV films in 2010
-
Feathers get "ruffled", not "rustled". Just a heads up, m8. ;)
-
I know it will sound like blasphemy to everyone but, I heard somewhere that Ben Foster was a name passed around for freddy. I thought it was fucked up to lose englund, but looking back at how great foster played the part in 300 days of night, maybe he could pull it off.
-
Motherfucker, can't you read? Hell no, I don't think he's a good actor. If you'd actually read my post, you'd realize that I think he's a copycat and an overactor. When he acts, I don't even see him - I see Brad Dourif. I would bet good money that Foster is a huge CUCKOO'S NEST fan, and Dourif's performance is why he wanted to become an actor. As a result, in every movie he's in, Foster's not playing a stagecoach robber or skin-art junkie or a wannabe vampire or a home invader; he's Ben Foster pretending he's Brad Dourif playing the role - to the max! But the guy can serve up all the Billy Bibbit-esque manic mannerisms and fiery glares he wants - he doesn't have an ounce of Dourif's humanity or gravitas. Foster's performances are totally superficial. And, for the record, "intensity" does not equal a genuinely good, nuanced performance. If you think it does, you deserve the shit-hackery this guy's slinging at you.
-
and as much as I think he would do a great job (as usual), I realy don't want him doing another "Depp show" as Freddy
-
He's the right age. He won't ask for 3 million bucks. And doesnt seem to be snobby that he would turn down sequels. Plus he's banging Rebecca Gayheart. And the fat women who ogle him on Greys Anatomy will flock to see him. If not Dane hire Meloni from SVU.
-
casting ben foster will actually create some positive buzz for this movie! Do it!
-
The new Freddy kills the old Freddy. Get it?
-
FINO.
-
sick, but hell its Freddy
-
Doesn't need to be remade at all. Secondly, RE is Freddy as Kevin Conrad is Batman. Third, if they do recast Freddy, it HAS to be Shia Labeuof!
-
That is all.
-
..my choice for Freddy would be Michael Wincott..its all in the voice..
-
I wish I could consider that a vague possibility, but this is Platinum fucking Dunes. They are not the taking into consideration type. They remade Texas Chain Saw without it even being about the family. They didn't even put the dinner scene in! They work fast and don't have time for unnecessary steps like understanding what made the original movie good or watching it and being familiar with its basic elements.
And in defense of Leatherface, he is a character and a performance just as Frankenstein's monster is. In the original and in part 2, although he's played by two different actors, he has two very strong characterizations. In the remake and prequel he also has a character, but his character is "big muscle man who's gonna fuckin kill everybody! SWEEEET! (guitars)."
But yes, Freddy is one of the few horror icons of the '80s who talks and has a face and cannot be replaced. So of course, they're gonna replace him, because that's what they do.
I guess we will survive a crappy, forgettable, one-time only "relaunch," but I feel sorry for Robert Englund, who seems so proud of being Freddy.
note: this could also be a publicity stunt so they can pretend they are listening to the fans if there is a big enough outcry. But I'm not sure they would bother with that shit. -
would be a good choice. I've always thought he was underappreciated. Seems like an asshole though.
-
Robert Englund as Ehren Kruger.
-
A wet dream on Elm Street.
-
but if he's not a 6'7" professional wrestler he probaly doesn't have a shot. They want this to be modern and realistic. Why would a murderer going after you in dreams be scary UNLESS he could bench press a car?
-
seriously, is it that hard to film an original script? STOP REMAKING MOVIES THAT GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. jesus.

"it's certainly understandable that they'd re-cast part to a performer without baggage/the weight of pre-association." What the FUCK are you talking about? The audience this will be aimed at won't know what a Robert Englund is anyway, so there's no baggage there. Meanwhile, those of us that remember Englund, the ones whose cash spent on the NOES flicks in the eighties fucking built New Line, wouldn't see Englund as baggage as all. We'd see him as reassurance. It would be a win-win situation. For the record though, not even Robert Englund could save Freddy's Dead. What a mess!
-
Wie meine Übersetzung Software tut. Mein Deutsch ist ein wenig rostiges.
-
I was only half heartedly following this remake from the beginning. Remakes in general are a nasty idea. Now Englund isn't playing Freddy? Count me out alltogether. Englund mad that character his own, NO ONE else deserves to play it. Even if they obtain someone who can do the job, WELL, I'm still out on this one. These remakes are really making me hate movies.
-
In which Englund-Freddy starts picking off the beautiful young cast & crew on the set of a pointless Michael Bay remake of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'.
-
Dracula is from a book. Lugosi wasn't even the first actor to portray him on stage or in a movie. And if he wanted to keep doing the sequels I'm sure they would've let him. If Hammer had wanted Lugosi to play Dracula in their movie it would've been hard to pull off because he was dead.
Freddy is a different matter because he was created on film, and has been portrayed by the same actor in 8 movies and a TV series. Any other version of Freddy (comic books, etc.) has always been based on Robert Englund.
And this also has the Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken factor because until this remake is made there is still hope of the series continuing with Englund. As recently as last month there were stories about New Line developing a Freddy vs. Jason 2 or a new Elm Street sequel. So hiring whichever wrestler or overly noticeable celebrity they choose will have consequences in that sense, it will cut off Robert Englund.
So to make that comparison is stretching. Of course, it could turn out to be like Dracula if somebody besides Englund could come up with a brilliant interpretation of Freddy that people would accept. But the chances of that coming from this production company, who so far have not made a good movie, seem slim. -
I say hire a hit man and take bay out...and everyone should go to new lines offices and all take a shit on their door step,.
-
FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF.... this is such utter fuckwittery i can hardly even muster the words. Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. Why remake this film at all? What exactly is the fucking point? FUCK OFF AND STOP WASTING MONEY THAT YOU COULD BE DONATING TO STARVING CHILDREN, YOU STUPID ARSEHOLES.
-
I can understand that he is a special character that in our hearts, can not be replaced. But honestly, you people want this old fart to keep climbing out of his coffin to reprise his role of the child murderer? come on, shit he is well past his prime. let the old fucker die already. The Nightmare series is my favorite horror series and i will be the first to shit on the film if they fuck it up, but if they do put foster in it, he might do the film justice. at least they arent scooping up broc lesner to don the red and green striped shirt. stop being pussies about it and let it go. Dont get me wrong, no one would be able to replace him for us, but let someone else in for some glory for the kids of today.
-
Gole teefe yo. Nick Cannon back from the dead to smoke da bichez dat played him. Diamond encrusted spinner glove knives. Sean John red and green striped sweaters which will be marketed as stylish. MTV films 2010. Another loveletter from the "new" hollywood to it's supportive fanboys. Fuck this shit !!! No wonder I prefer Asain cinema.
-
...and the first hour and a half will be about Freddy's childhood and what motivates him to enter dreams and kill... yaaaawwwwnnnn!
-
I have no problem with studios remaking anything, no matter how distasteful I personally find it. They only do it because we pay to see it and they're in the business to make money. Hell yes they'll recast, why not. They will have no loyalty to Englund. They could make an utter turd and people would still see it and rent it. You want these shitty remakes to stop? Stop going to see them. Tell your friends not to see them. Don't rent the DVD. The only thing a studio hears is the jinggle of coin in their pockets, not your rants and curses, speak to them with your money. That they will hear when their pockets stop clinking. Stay home on the weekends or go out and do other stuff, but don't go see it. That's the only thing they'll get. I mean they just made a japanese/american horror remake about death by voice mail for Chrissake. Who the hell would or did pay to see that anyway. That's the people that encourage this crap.
-
i was born in '82 and i first saw this movie when i was 3. i can't believe that i'm old enough to see remakes of movies that came out after i was born. fuck.
incidentally, if robert englund is not freddy in this, i hope they don't use him in some corny cameo as a wink/middle finger to fans of the original.
wait, fuck i sound like i'm accepting this horse shit proposal. this movie will fucking suck. wes craven personalized this film by naming freddy after a grade school bully of his, there won't be half the heart or honesty of the original in this remake. fucking michael bay and anoes is more illogical than van sant and psycho. why doesn't he remake top gun or some other stupid guy movie i fucking hate? maybe a franchise i don't give a fuck about like phantasm.
also, michael bay is fucking ugly. he looks like a tom cruise/cryptkeeper hybrid.

You don't know Ben Foster? Do yourself a favour, mate, and watch Alpha Dog, 30 Days of Night, 3:10 to Yuma... Hell, even Liberty Heights. The guys shows a lot of promise. That said, he is too young to play Freddy and if he has any taste (which I'm certain he does) he'l stay as far away from Platinum Dunes as possible.
-
I was five or six when the Dino de Laurentis "King Kong" was released. I wasn't old enough to see it at the theater, but I recall the giant cutout of Kong they had on top of a local cinema. A couple years later, when it was shown on TV, I felt it was different enough from the original. The score was excellent. The world trade stuff was 'cool' to me back then (I'd seen the original, so putting it in 'real life' New York was cool).
-
... If they do recast Englund as Freddy, it would hardly be seen as a "relaunch", would it? Most people would think of it as just another shitty sequel and stay the fuck away. The only reason anyone watches remakes is because of the novelty factor.
-
It seems the consensus amongst talkbackers is that Platinum Dunes (PD)is a blight of the film industry today. Most everyone here seems to know and care about movies and the grand history of it all. Unfortunately, no matter how much we hate PD, these crap-filled remakes will make them money, make these arseholes running the company rich, and encourage them to make more unoriginal shite films. The reason? The consumer. Simple, uneducated, easily amused people will pay to see this movie. So, I'm not trying to defend PD or anything, but they don't see film as art, they see it as business, BUT, if nobody went to see their films, they wouldn't stay in business. They would go bankrupt! Now, we all want to see that happen to them, so the best thing to do is hope no one goes to see their films. But, good luck telling that to these kids today with their myspace and their ipods and their total disregard for anything made before they hit their "tween" years. [Fudge] these kids. [Fudge] them and their disposable income and subsequent support of horrible films like Meet the Spartans. May every theater they populate burn with them in it. And may all ye true film buffs continue to insult this horrible trash. Talk on!
-
its only a novelty if it happens on the rare occasion but it is so frequent Dunes is a company that just makes remakes essentially. Does anyone see the wrongness in that? A new company that produces nothing but bad remakes of okay to decent horror movies, and makes a living doing it.
Hell, maybe its my generation. The Gen X and Y bunch we have money and jobs and its like we're spoiled kids trying to get that one toy we didn't get that Christmas when we were six and now we can, and all this crap is coming back, GI joe, Transformers, Slasher Flicks, Game systems, Not only do we see the movies but adults are buying the toys to collect ect. Can we just not grow up or let go? Is it because we're not marrying till 30 going back to live with mom and dad after college instead of getting kicked the fuck out, not having kids of our own till nearly 40. What!? whew sorry had that rant brewing all day. Can you tell I turned 30 this weekend. -
New movies. I can has them now?
Failing that, a Leslie Vernon sequel. There. -
Robert Englund and Freddy go together like Godzilla and man in suit.
-
I went to college, got married, joined the militarty, went to war, had a kid, got another degree and now I teach. And I still watch shitty movies and have the entire collection of 25th annaversary GI Joes, and own a comic shop on the side that peddles the crap of which I speak to other people my own age! So... yeah I'm a hypocite.
-
In this version Freddy Krueger is after those who are too smart to fall for the bullshit being sold by Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. Powered by liberal guilt (which proves to be his downfall), Krueger attacks conservatives in their sleep, but is easily defeated by common sense and the ability to use facts to come to a rational, rather than emotional, conclusion. Hopefully they can work in parts for Sean Penn and Tim Robbins so they can both feel they're making the world a better place through Hollywood propaganda...
-
"How about Mackenzie Crook?" I sometimes walk past Mackenzie Crook in my home town (An area of London). Mackenzie Crook smokes a shitload of weed. Every damn time I walk past him he's toking on a massive reefer.
-
You have my sympathy, mate. And novelty isn't worth it. These guys are looking to make a quick buck and that's exactly what they're gonna get. Let's face it, we're all gonna go watch it, because we're curious to see how it turns out, curious to see if the new guy playing Freddy is any good. Even those of us who hate the idea will go see it, and we'll probably be pissed off afterwards, but that won't change the fact that we paid these cunts in order to see their movie.
-
Do a semi-prequel thing with Englund as the human Freddy and then have a CGI Freddy after he "dies", that way.... never mind, I think they should do something with the existing universe or something along the line of New Nightmare (hell, what about Freddy vs Jason part deux?).
-
I'm a masochist. Although, I didn't watch the Texas Chainsaw, Hills Have Eyes or Halloween remakes on the big screen, so maybe I can withstand this one too. Then again, it's fuckin Freddy, man!
-
An imaginary story where Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent go to Camp Crystal Lake and are harassed by summer camp handyman Freddy Krueger and Mrs. Vorhees would be kind of kick ass. Well, as long as Mrs. Vorhees didn't get pissed and hunt down Clark and Bruce for having sex with one another...
-
Absolute waist of time and money.
I will not go to see this at all.
Just make another movie in the franchise.
As the old joke goes.
" Why does Hollywood remake movies"
" Because they didn't screw it up the first time " -

"Nightmare" was a good single movie, but the sequels were terrible and it devolved into a self-parody. Making a new film with Freddy as a scary rather than comedic character could be a good idea. (Not that they'll do a good job, but the idea is sound.)
-
I just want to watch Crispin Hellion Glover kill people. Is that so wrong?
-
But Hollywood just isn't listening. One day they'll realize that fighting midgets sell more tickets than tits.
-
No Englund means this is not a Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It's a shitty copy.
If you want to make a movie that doesn't feature the character actor who made the series great, then you might as well not call it A Nightmare on Elm Street at all. Call it "The Dream Monster" or something.
I wouldn't pay to see this. This is completely different from remaking Halloween or Friday the 13th or Texas Chainsaw... The villains in those were masked nobodies. Freddy IS all personality. Freddy IS Robert Englund. -
Basic kiddie killing horror movie... at the end he's burnt to death by the parents. Opening scene is his Mum being raped by 100 maniacs (or whatever the backstory was). Englund MUST be in it - pre-make-up, of course.
-
Englund IS Freddy. Anyone else would probably just be doing an imitation of him anyway.
I'm still not sure why they don't just do a proper sequel... -
can we petition? no elmstreet without englund? fuck, my buddy who works at a theater said he wont sell tickets to a robert englund less movie. lol. dont give these fuckers any of your money when this piece of shit comes out. if it fails at the box office, maybe hollywood will get a clue and stop remaking movies that dont need to be remade.we only have ourselves to blame. of course, there are people out there who dont know any better... maybe they never watched an elm street flick. maybe they dont even watch horror movies. they arent the target audience. the target audience is the people who love these movies, and the target audience should take a stand against this.
-
I's all been beaten to death in at least 3 or 4 of the movies. Just make a sequel. Take a cue from Dream Warriors. That was the only decent sequel anyway.
-
that could even pull this off, ..theyd have to totally reinvent the charcter of freddy which i highly doubt can top englunds take on it. If they didnt invent a different freddy itd simply be an actor pretending to be robert englund acting as freddy...wouldnt you want the real deal? just get robert englund and make a good Nightmare on elm street movie that justifies a remake..ben foster doesnt even come close from what ive seen, he looks and sounds like a teenager..hed be good for freddy:the high school years.
-
We can expect plenty of 80's horror classics being updated now that CGI has come so far along. I mean...Now we have technology to make anything you can dream appear REAL as hell on screen.
So while they are doing it...why not update the character, too? Would we expect Kurt Russell to reprise his role as MacReady in the eventual "The Thing" remake/reboot, do you? Nope...it'll be some new hot shot actor from today's casting pool...who will have to stand in front of green screens all day reacting at "nothing" but tennis balls on green sticks...when Kurt got the benefit of actual latex and goo animatronic alien life forms to interact with.
Advanced CGI will be forcing movie makers to remake ALL our favorites from the 70's and 80's. You better just get use to it. It's never going to stop. -
Because Clive Barker himself is going to do it because there are things he couldn't do back in 1986. That remake would have a purpose. This does not.
-
On the one hand, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET does not need to be re-made for all the obvious reasons, but on the other hand, as Cheif Brody said, think about all the great deaths they could come up with using CGI - it could be quite fun if the screenwriters use their imaginations. Having said that, it's being written by the Academy Award winning writers of FREDDY VS. JASON, so it's bound to be a masterpiece.
-
I found Mr. Bay's personal forum.
http://tinyurl.com/2kc8yw
If your really upset, go and let him know peronaly. It may make ya feel better even if you know it won't do a lick of good. -
I don't get the hate here for a remake. It would have to be an improvement on some of the horrendously awful films in this series.
-
"We can expect plenty of 80's horror classics being updated now that CGI has come so far along. I mean...Now we have technology to make anything you can dream appear REAL as hell on screen."
Now just hold it right there. Doesn't real stuff like latex and ketchup already look more REAL (because, after all, it is) than a bunch of expensive CGI latex and CGI ketchup? Michael Bay is a cock and he can eat my shit. -
It was a great movie, the sequels yeah remake em, and do them better...
-
i've seen many people, here and on other sites complain that the writers of FVJ are on this. but unless im really blind, i havent seen their names connected to this at all, they're doing the Friday movie. there isnt a writer picked for this til the strike ends.
-
I mean...come on...some of our classic 80's horror had some pretty fake ass shit in it. God love 'em, the filmakers and effects guys were pushing the envelope to the best of their abilities....But the cost of CGI and the massive render time has come WAY down since, say, the 1st Jurassic Park...to where it is now COST EFFECTIVE for studios to go back through some of their 20 and 30 year old properties and say...Wow....imagine the update we can do with that story! The possibilities can become endless....Now will all the updates and reboots have the same care and attention to detail that, say, Peter Jackson took with King Kong? Probably not. I think Harry might argue himself that the original Kong is far superior to Pete's remake in some respects.
But to a desperate Hollywood...starving for new tent pole movies evry god damn summer... A NEW Nightmare on Elm Street...with updated effects and a whole new cast....brings a great story up to date for a whole new generation. I mean...fuckin Johnny Depp was IN the original Nightmare....but a whole generation only knows him as Cap't Jack Sparrow.
I'm just saying...whether it's Michael Bay...or Uwe Boll doing the raping...BECAUSE of cost effective CGI....your childhood is going to be raped...hard....and sometimes without lubricant....and all the petitions in the world ISN'T going to stop it.
But every once in a while...something NEW will hit that silver screen... A new "Matrix" or "Lord of the Rings" will come along and make these lame re-imaginings and remakes feel like yesterday's news...and Hollywood will go back to looking for fresh NEW ideas.
Until then, Ray...I suggest you lube up.
-
Homage...that's the word missing from my previous post. Pete Jackson paid homage to King Kong...striving to the last fucking detail to capture tthe feeling that the original Kong gave to audiences back in 1933. He just had better toys to do it with.
When studios greenlight all these fucking remakes...from The Wolf Man...to Elm Street...they better hire directors and artisans who know what the word homage means.
Otherwise...they are just wasting everyone's time and money. If they strive to give their remake the respect that the original source material deserves...then some of these thing may actually be fun for new and old audiences alike.
If they take the "cookie cutter" Hollywood blockbuster conveyor belt route...it's gonna be a dark time in cinematic history. -
Why don't they just go in a different direction. Robert Englund is the ONLY Freddy. Since they want to remake/revisit, whatever, just create an entirely different character. No Freddy, have a different mass murder, different dream demon, anything but Freddy and the Elm Street world.
You know they gonna uff it up -
And Let Robert voice the role. I mean the fucker is supposed to be burned beyond recognition right!?!?!?!? CGI would be acceptable. A real burn victim would never look like those latex appliance pieces that Robert sported for all those films. Fuck!!! This way Robert can keep the role, and his age and psyhicality is no longer a factor. Not that it ever was, but if they are that hard up to reinvent freddy look and persona. Then this is the obvious answer that keeps both sides happy. We still get Robert and they get whatever new incarnation they feel they need to reinvent the look and feel of the new Freddy. Think of it as the new Gollum Challenege.
-
freddy walks up to someone with his glove stretched out to their throat and says "You're gonna die, bitch!"
the teen pulls out a shotgun and says "In your dreams!" and blows Freddy away. And we all die a little more -
Or if Hugh is too expensive get his casting doppleganger Dougray Scott to fill the knived gloves. Get Del Toro to direct a more serious, broodingly ambiguous Freddy picture.
-
Didn't the first one do pretty good in the BO? Why don't they just make a sequel with the same actors as before?
-
My picks for a director:

-
hell... he does.
-
Lea Thompson in her prime. Yeah, baby.
-
forever, man.
-
I know. He did that wierd BEN remake a few years ago, but the guy is good and wierd. He looks like he'd be the "type" to be a kidf**ker. Another "cool" angle would be to make him a defrocked catholic priest before the Elm Street stuff occurs. Wes Craven made a masterpiece, but since he made it, the Catholics have found demons amongst their ranks, and Freddy fits right in with that ilk, especially since Mom was a nun raped in an asylum, right? What about Udo Keir as a priest that teaches young Freddy the fine art of Sausage-Stuffing?
-
Paul WS Anderson or Uwe Boll.
Watch. Its gonna happen that way. -
Glover did WILLARD not BEN. fuckers.
-
That would be great.
-
Balls out Blu-Ray 25th anniversary version of the original, complete with all-new cast and crew interviews (including Johnny Depp and Wes Craven), CGI updates of the cheesier effects and a limited edition Sideshow Freddy glove replica, plus a theatrical re-release to boot)...but, why do that when they can poison the well forever? Get Rob Zombie and make sure it gets fucked up properly!
-
Wears a Christmas Sweater all year round? See? It's shit like that that ripped the balls off of Freddy, that kind of writing. Get some guy who LOOKS like a damned pedophile to be Krueger, make him REAL fucking scary in REAL life, and then, when you think you got him killed by firebombing his child molester basement...HE'S IN YOUR FUCKING DREAMS! See...It's really easy to fuck up, because it's so easy to do right.
-
with the glove hand, does he? Or shine his sausage? How sweet. Dark meet. I hope this one has more superhero dream warriors, like a guy in a wheelchair who cannot walk, but in his dreams not only can he walk, but he can do electric boogaloo gymkata.
-
Lou Gossett gotta eat.
-
Search on YouTube for Crispin Glover's video "Clowny Clown Clown'. He IS twisted enough to be Freddy. Hell, he should have been the Joker!
-
I was already pissed, but Michael Bay really knows how to stick it to film fans, doesn't he? No Robert Englund = no Freddy film and no me. I'm not watching this shit.
-
Nice lists, but you forgot the list of directors in the Platinum Dunes rolodex: the guy who directed those commercials, the guy who directed those videos, the guy who was fired from END OF DAYS but then directed TEXAS CHAINSAW remake and PATHFINDER, the other guy who did the other commercials. That is the entire list, unfortunately.
-
Truth is, it's in our nature to create, break down and recreate. I mean, I grew up thinking Roger Moore was the real Bond. And, to that generation, as misguided as it is, he really was. Doesn't mean we don't get the opportunity to discover Connery's characterization and learn from the master. Any more than it means we can't allow Craig to come in and sort of blow our minds. I dig the love for Englund, but seriously? Bill Shatner's campaigne during his entire career that he WAS Kirk, nay, Star Trek itself is probably exactly why he doesn't get to be in the reboot. Anyways, I don't mean to offend anyone. I just am not terribly surprised by this news...
-
I'm sick of it. Robert England IS and ALWAYS WILL BE Freddy.
-

No matter who they get, they're just gonna do an Englund imitati
by sonnyfern
So why not bring the real deal back? It just baffles me.
-
days of the year?
-
Only F13 stands a chance of having a decent remake given that its parameters are so vague, but even that could/should just be made as another sequel. A good one.
-
never gonna watch this. In fact this is my last comment on a talkback about this crap. Fucking Whores. Any true Freddy fan will also boycott this shit.
-
Eli Roth.Neill Marshall is not the man for this either. And I usually whore him at everything.
-
THIS REMAKE SHIT HAS GOT TO STOP!!!!!! Im not going to anymore remakes!!! Stop spending money on crap that has already been done... and done much better....
-
Sure it was fabulous in the second and third sequels to see Fred quipping and gesturing wildly, but then there were nine other movies or something!
Give it to Giuseppe Andrews. He's fucked. (In a brilliant way) Now that's scary. -
So.. are we getting a full "origin" story now?
-
Even if we get a non-comedian version of Freddy, it'll still take an actor to play him. Whereas Mike Myers or Jason could be played by anyone with five minutes of stunt training. No offense to Kane Hodder.
-
I just wanted to say that. Again.
-
can't wait to know more, but fuller said there's no on the ground yet!
-
The most remarkable thing about the original film and the series is the staying power of Krueger.
A shadowy, dark hidden figure with freakish powers in the dream world and an even worse backstory...has become a horror icon.
While I agree with most horror fans that Fred Krueger was annoying, silly and dull in the later films in the series, in all honesty, he was the only thing worth seeing in the later Elm Street films.
The screen always lit up a bit when he was on and Robert Englund definitely infused Freddy with a life and an appeal that a lesser actor simply could not pull off under all the make up.
Krueger became more and more comical and stereotypical of the light-hearted way Horror was perceived in the 1980’s.
But the Nightmare on Elm Street series became something different as it dragged on. It became dark fantasy.
The fantasy theme of these films elevate them (or lower them depending on your opinion) into the mainstream. Krueger became the Ronald McDonald of Horror.
-
give him a nice cashmere argyle sweater (v-neck optional)... maybe substitue his glove for a series of serrated blades he'll strap across his chest Pancho Villa style... uh, and oh, i know! give him a hot young emo-chick sidekick (gotta look out for the younger demographic, of course). hey, if they're going to totally rape Krueger, they should go all out.
-
The remake's Casting Director! I'd say give the Freddy role to a versatile NEW character actor who can easily project a quirky meekness but is also able to malevolently snarl his way into our hearts, eh?
-
Oh wait they'll probably just make this book into a movie next year. I suprised the writersstrike had any impact at all with absolutly nothing original coming out. Oh wait...Jumper....yay.
-
Ryan Stiles from Whose Line is it Anyway.
Awwwww yeah. -
Remember THE OMEN... or THE FOG... or maybe HALLOWEEN? I don't care about the fucking remakes made by dickheads. This new versions suck. And I'm sure they will show us a CGI Freddy who will look like a digital 'dream'cloud or something. You know what? I don't care! For me Robert is Freddy... period!
-
I can understand wanting to get Freddy to a new generation. I was about 12 when the first one came out, and it scared the piss out of me. Then the sequels got more and more silly as they went along, but being a teen, I ate them up anyway.
Now they want to start over. Why not use Englund??? Aren't the majority of child murderers in their 40's and 50's? I always thought that Freddy was a little too young in the first one. If he was any good at being a child rapist/murderer, then he wouldn't have been caught/released, and then let go, and then murdered by angry parents until he was much older. Just my 2 cents as an avid Freddy fan from his heyday.
BUT, if you MUST recast... Ben Foster would work. I MIGHT pay to see that. -
I love Michael Wincott.....but as Freddy? Ehhh I don`t know. I don`t think he`d do it anyway.
-
it has been too long.
it is like coming home.
