5.6, hitting HBO On Demand Monday and HBO Proper next Sunday, is described by the channel thusly:

Episode #56: "The Dickensian Aspect"
Debut: SUNDAY, FEB. 10
Mystified by Omar's disappearance, Marlo and Chris (Gbenga Akinnagbe) ramp up their efforts to locate their nemesis. After attending a sparsely attended waterfront ceremony, Carcetti (Aidan Gillen) fires away at a larger press event - and recasts himself as a champion for the homeless. Bunk (Wendell Pierce) revisits some old leads in the rowhouse cases, but is frustrated in his attempts to get bloodwork from the crime lab. Templeton looks for a perfect follow-up to his latest, nationally covered story, which has replaced the city's educational crisis on the paper's priority list. After the detail gets more manpower, Freamon (Clarke Peters) presses McNulty to get new surveillance equipment, but the resources aren't as deep as both hoped. Pearlman (Deirdre Lovejoy) discovers new clues pointing to corruption in City Hall; Marlo makes new appointments at the latest co-op meeting; McNulty takes a peculiar interest in a homeless man.

Teleplay by Ed Burns; story by David Simon & Ed Burns; directed by Seith Mann.

I dont want to ruin anything for those who have yet to see episode 5.5. Its just a tiny spoiler, but Omar's leap out of the window after he almost fell victim to Marlo's trap was one of my favorite moments in The Wire Mythology. Thats right I said it. Bring on 5.6!

Great episode tonight, though I'm still failing to engage with the media element. Don't know how they are going to wrap it all up in just five episodes though.

    Wire talkbacks

    by mc-909

The Wire TBs on AICN are kind of pointless. Not everyone watches the Wire and the people that do don't want to spoil anything for anyone else. There should be a seperate TB for episodes that have already aired (and no, I'm not talking about the OnDemand ones) so those of us that are fans can read comments without fear of having anything spoiled. If you are one of the people that deems it necessary to spoil The Wire, go fuck yourself.

On that note, battle royale: Omar vs. Anton Chigurh from NCFOM. Discuss.

Gravy, you're on crack and I question your love of the show. Omar's leap was possibly the worst moment in Wire history. It might have worked in a Van Damme movie but it was horribly out of place on this show. MC-909, don't click on the link if you don't want to see any spoilers. I realize there's a lot of pain and anguish in not being able to read a page on the internet but you'll come out of the experience a stronger man.

    Funketeer...

    by gravyakira

The worst moment in Wire history was the second McNulty started to strangle an already dead junkie and claimed "we have a serial killer on our hands". Either that, or having to sit through season 2 after season 1 knocked my socks off. Once Omar blasted Stinkum with a shotgun and wounded Wee-bay, Omar was a legend in the hood of Baltimore. Since then, he has robbed every major drug cartel in the city, and still lives to tell about it. Anyone with even a minor knowledge of the drug trade will tell you that is damn near impossible, no matter what city you in. The Omars in "real life" are all probably dead or in jail. So while the Wire remains the most authentic and true to life tv show possibly of all-time, its still a tv show. I have no problem with Omar surviving a 3-story fall. He didnt jump from a fucking skyscraper! What would you have done? Stood up and get shot to shit at 3 different angles? I love the fact that Omar is a hood superhero of sorts. This is not the first time the show has hinted at it. Did you see when he got locked up in season 4? Only Omar could get out of a situation like that. And by the way Funketeer, im a sober young man who loves the show conditionally. To have my love questioned by you is insulting. You must have really enjoyed season 2 huh? Not that theres anything wrong with that. "You come at the King, you best not miss!"-Omar

Wouldn't it be news worthy to report that sources indicate that the writers strike may be nearing an end..? According to the LA Times..."If union leaders OK the proposal, the strike could be called off by week's end, salvaging the Oscars and fall TV. Hollywood's striking writers and major studios have reached the outlines of a new employment contract, resolving key sticking points over how much writers should be paid for work that is distributed over the Internet, people familiar with the negotiations said Saturday. ..." I love season 2

    by gravyakira

It contains vital story elements that are still playing out in the final season. I was just trying to make a point that the Omar revenge storyline is far more enjoyable to me than anything that happened on the docks in the second season. Frank Sobotka was one of my favorite characters, but I fell in love with the Wire because of its focus on urban America, and its accurate portrayal of the "drug war" happening in the states. Its also one of the rare times on television that a show with a mostly black cast surpasses everything else out there in terms of acting, story, and flat out entertainment value. When season 2 began showing with most of my favorite characters on the backburner, it was a disappointment. I love the fact that the Wire is one big continuous story. And season 2 had some of the finest moments of the show (Omar taking the bench, Ziggy finally losing it), but its focus was more on the law side of things rather than the street. For some thats a plus, and I am no more right than anyone else who may have liked season 2 more than I did. And while I love Bunk, Greggs, Freeman, Prez, and the rest, my favorite aspects of the show have always been the rise and fall of the Barksdale operation, and the continued adventures of Omar. That is until you make me fall in love with a group of middle school kids. Damn I love this show!

If you didn't like ANY season of the Wire then I still question your love of the show. Season 2 was just as good as any other season. If you didn't like the change of scenery, too bad, because that's one of the elements of the show. As for Omar and his exploits, he's based on real people, one of whom is on the show right now so I'd think it's very possible to rob drug dealers and survive to tell about it. Finally, McNulty strangling a homeless guy to fake a serial killer is completely within character for a man who wants to do the right thing, is continually disappointed in the system, and has recently fallen off the wagon. If you were paying attention to the characters and not hoping for more Batman moments like last week, you'd recognize that. I hereby revoke your official Wire fanclub membership and reinstate you as acting president of the Full House Fan Armada. Go reset your Olson Twins countdown clock and watch some very special episodes of Blossom.

Since no one else has the balls to say it, I will...

    by mikesal222

The Wire has jumped the shark this season.

Omar jumping out of a tall building. Lester, supposedly the smartest cop in the department, flushing his career down the toilet to follow McNulty's insane plan. There are other equally far-fetched
plot developments, but I don't think those episodes have aired yet so I won't mention them.

And the media storyline is nowhere near as compelling as the kids storyline last season.

Season 4 was probably the greatest season of a television show ever. Season 5 feels like a totally different show.

That said, it's still better than 99% of anything else on TV. But compared to previous seasons it has been a letdown so far.

I think having only 10 episodes to tell the story as opposed to 13 is a big part of it. The whole rhythm of the season feels...off.

Hopefully things will get back on track for the final episodes.

    Still didnt make myself clear

    by gravyakira

The Wire is the best television show I have ever seen. I LOVE every season and pretty much every second of every episode If I had to pick my favorite seasons in order it would be : 4,1,3, and Ill have to wait until this season ends before I put season 2 ahead of 5 or vice versa. We all have our favorite characters on the Wire and we each have our own opinions on our favorite episodes and scenes from the show. Judging by the talkbacks here, the fan favorites seem to be Omar and McNulty. My personal favorites happen to be Omar, Avon, Slim Charles, Bunk, and the late Bodie. Those are the characters (I) relate to, and care about most on the Wire. Your personal favorites may vary from mine, and in turn probably sways your affection or dislike of certain episodes. I agree that this season is a disappointment. Season 4 set the bar so and and set things up so well for this season, that I was expecting to see the second coming of Christ in season 5. So far it has been nothing of what I expected, mainly due to McNulty and Freeman and this homeless bullshit. The saving grace this season has been the continued story of Michael and Dookie, the power hungry Marlo(even though the cold fuck killed off 2 other series regulars), and Omar's revenge of Butchie. These story lines keep me coming back each week. I nearly lost it when Bodie took two to the head in last years finale. I just dont really care for Mcnulty's story line as much as the other characters on the show. I just never really liked him that much. But thats just me. Now i gotta get my hair braided before the Super Bowl. Ill get back to you later Funk.

    by mc-909

with his character. He's an individual that's too smart for his own good. Mark my words, he'll fuck himself by bragging or some shit and that will be his downfall. He always fucks himself...he doesn't think before he leaps. So all this stuff he's doing with the dead addicts perfectly coincides with his character. He's a fuck up. A smart fuck up, but a fuck up nonetheless.

Amy Ryan is amazing in Gone Baby Gone and she's making the talk show rounds. But not a single talk show host has even made mention of the wire. You would think that someone who's been on 20 episodes and is STILL ON THE SHOW every sunday at 9 would be able to at least get a little plug in for the show. I'm not blaming her at all, it just sucks that no one watches the show so they probably don't even know she's on the damn thing. Morons. Those sad fuckers are missing out big time.

I'm done ranting and i'm pumped for tonights episode. I don't have On Demand so I only watch it week to week and i'm loving it so far. My favorite seasons in order: 4,3,1,2,5

    Season 5

by guy who got a headache and accidentally

I don't know about all this talk about it "jumping the shark" and being a "huge letdown" but it has definitely taken a fucking weird and unexpected turn here this season. Maybe that's the big final suprise, The Wire, the one show that does not cater to viewer expectations suprises us one final time by being, uh, action movie and 24ish or The Shieldish, I guess you would sort of call it. I can't even imagine how it's all going to end, maybe some weird 4th wall breaking shit will happen.

    Highlights from tonights episode:

    by eggbeater

Clay Davis sets the record for the longest Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Seeing Lester getting the wiretap all set up and then all he hears is static. Awesome.

    Omar's sky dive.

But the best scene of the episode has to be when McNulty and the reporter from The Sun are sitting at the table basically just lying to each other. The look on each others face when one would "one up" the previous lie was classic. That scene was genius. I've heard people knocking the serial killer side plot but I'm actually diggin it. I thought the whole episode was outstanding. And by the look of next weeks preview *minor spoiler* we will finally get to see the deal with omar and the exploding SUV. Obviously i don't have On Demand. Most of you are way ahead of me. But its all good. Best show of all time.

The scene at the newspaper was awesome. McNulty sitting there knowing the reporter is lying, and unable to call him on it, because he can't say why he KNOWS he's lying. Great stuff. And while I've complained about McNulty's backslide this year, I'm feeling he may straighten himself out yet, when he's actually got his ex and Bunk in agreement.

    I WOULD ARGUE...

    by ninjatracksuit

...(To the haters of WIRE S2) that it really got everyone ready for the the massive directions that this series has sprawled in. At the end of the day all roads do lead to the drug empire that Barksdale created - but Simon and Co. want to show how this came or comes to be (in Baltimore). Who is supplying the drugs to the community (ultimately preying on them) and why they have taken such an iron grip on people is just as important as anything else covered. The docks, the mayor's office, the schools, the paper - all of these lead to the street. And the concise, truthful way in which they operate in The Wire has shown how - though we live in a free country - the same opportunities are not really there for certain segments of the population. Again, S2 adds some depth to 'The Greek,' even though he was always referred to mysteriously and only shown a few times. After the crush of seeing him leaving (at the airport) at the end of S2, you have no idea how happy I was to see him back on American soil in this season. You have sociopaths like Wee Bey and Marlo and Chris and Snoop crawling the streets, but The Greek is - in my mind - the worst of them all, and I hope they get the fucker. No telling how Simon and Co. might play it, but there is still the chance (with the 4 eps left of the season I haven't seen yet) that they might bag him. Didn't Daniels find a bracelet or necklace at the end of S2?

    by ninjatracksuit

Yeah, that scene at the paper was great - you could just see the look of disbelief in McNulty's eyes...And then seconds later you could see the wheels turning as he suddenly realized that he could use that in some way. Great scene. Also nice - the subtle way in recent eps where they have shown the gentle side of Chris. The guy is such a monster (see 'alley walks' and the beating death of Michael's father...umm, though he deserved it), that it was a great juxtaposition seeing how he was going to miss his family while they try and take care of the Omar problem. This season really is great - I would argue that it is moving at quite a fast pace compared to the others, but it is excusable...I mean, this is the end. My only disappointment so far: No Bunny Colvin.

Thanks eggbeater. I don't know - something about it feels fast, but I guess we'll see when the eps roll out. However, I did read that there were a few promos/scenes and whatnot filmed/leaked that were total bunk (no pun intended). I think one of them had Butchie or someone else smoking crack...Maybe it was actually Dookie. The other had Snoop mouthing off some stuff, and the last one had Avon removing a wire from his chest after a prison chat with Marlo. So who knows. I do think that scene looks 'unfinished,' but I guess you could argue that about the majority of scenes in The Wire, when they are taken out of context.

    GOTTA BACK UP...

    by ninjatracksuit

Eggbeater on this one - he did mega-warn everyone that there was a possible spoiler to follow, and it could easily have been skipped. And that's some pretty major news to keep under one's hat - I can understand the desire to let it out somewhere...even if I reserve judgement that it is real until I see it in an official episode. I'd also like to apologize to the others that are a couple episodes back - a lot of us found the leaked episodes (up to and including Ep 7, I found them on Mininova.org), so we may be a little nonchalant in the talkback...Forgetting that most are just up to episode 5. So again - sorry. Also, in relation to the Lost comments, Executor - no, I don't think Simon and Co. are filming false scenes and playing with people...But, some scenes are shot as promos early on, based solely on ideas, and to see how they look and play on a screen...Don't tell me that you don't think HBO has the spare change to do that for one of the most critically beloved masterpieces of a show to have ever graced the airwaves. ANd again, it could be real, we'll just have to wait and see - but I still think the cuts and the lighting are off (much like a promo). Something about them doesn't feel like The Wire to me, but alas - patience...

Yeah, blame HBO on demand and bit torrents for the spoilerish stuff...But yeah, for - literally - the best show on television these talkbacks do have a few tumbleweeds rolling through...

    Back to tonights episode.

    by eggbeater

No more spoilers from me. I appreciate the post ninjatracksuit. If anyone is pissed that i posted the video and didn't take proper precautions, then i apologize. I probably shouldn't have posted it in the first place.
But I want to talk again about the scene with McNulty and Templeton at the newsroom. I talked about it earlier but I just watched it again and I still can't get over how genius it was. I don't think either of them figured out that the other was lying. They were both so wrapped up in their own lies and thinking they were smarter than the other that it just didn't register to them that maybe the other person wasn't telling the truth. This season may not be the best of the 5 but that scene, for me, ranks in the top 5 of the entire series. Amazing writing.

by guy who got a headache and accidentally

How would McNulty NOT know the other guy was lying, you dumbass, he was saying shit that McNulty KNEW couldn't have possibly happened. He made up the god damned serial killer. And fuck you for those spoilers. Herc clearly stated he wouldn't tolerate that shit here.

    No Love Lost here

    by kentucky colonel

I will no longer be posting here. Even a small spoiler (Omar jumps out of a building) just fucking ruins it.

I know...big fucking deal, eh? Well, the advertisers might think otherwise (especially the Busted T folks....who have the hottest girl-next-door types).

    Enjoy your spoilage.

Episode 5.5 Mcnulty / Templeton Spoilers

    by mrjonz72

I do to beleive that there is a possibility that McNulty doesnt know that Templeton is lying.
The possiblity exists that in McNultys mind...someone pretending to be the killer (that doesnt exist) actually called Templeton. You know there are some crazys out there.. It has happend a few times in real life.

And oh yeah Season 2 was great...I just dont think people were not ready for the direction it went it..but I think views also got enough screen time of the "streets" in the show in Season 2. I have watched the 1st 3 seasons at least twice and as Great as this show is, the first time watching it, it amazes me how it's even better the 2nd viewing and the stuff I didnt catch the 1st viewing.

God I love it when my phone number has the same area code as people's on the show. They stopped giving out 410 awhile ago, though. Now it's 443.

    5.6 was great...

    by philvis

I was left feeling bad because I now have another week's wait until 5.7 shows up on ON Demand. This honestly is a fantastic show and it deserves more respect than it gets. You know the show is good when it makes you feel for a super baddie(Chris) for just a moment...but then I wanted Omar to blast his ass. I just can't wait for Snoop to meet her maker and for Marlo to get treated like the bitch he is. I don't want him dead...I want him going to jail as a parapalegic.

Question re: Omar's stakeout of Monk's crib

    by bjpeirce

Early in the episode they showed Chris saying that they had seen Omar casing Monk's crib. Plus in a few of the shots they showed Omar and the real Omar sitting in the car nearby. Why didn't they just take them out then instead of waiting for them to come into Monk's place? Did I miss something? Also, that wasn't Kennard that threw that soda bottle at Dukie, was it?

Marlo's cell number is also Cheryl's phone number (see season 3). It would be an interesting twist if Cheryl was working with Marlo or was in fact Marlo.

Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World

    by eggbeater

You fuckin dunce. McNulty is completely wrapped up in his own lie. The last thing he's thinking is that the reporter is lying. I'm betting he thinks some crazy person really called Templeton claiming to be the serial killer. That's why he tried to expand on it talking about the number 12 and shit. Watch the scene again before you start talking shit. And regarding the spoiler I posted earlier. If you didn't want to know what happened and you still read past "Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler", then how is it my fault? Fuck you.

    i really just dont agree

    by daywalker1

Sorry guys, I can't believe so many of you are giving up here on the McNulty, Freamon scam. Is this really soooo unbelievable. A nutty cop who always goes over the line, and is so passionate about his work that he disobeys chains of command, infuriates superiors, goes off the grid to get things done...fianlly reaching the breaking point, finally getting to that place where he goes, f you all, these people are dead, and you don't care, so one way or another I'm going to do what needs to get done to catch the bad guys. Or even Lester. A whole career, much of it wasted, by a system that only cares about catching the bad guys when it's easy, cheap, and politically convenient.

I don't find it unrealistic at all that both of these guys could get to this same end point.

    Why is Kenard still dealing?

    by eggbeater

Didn't he steal Namond's package in the 4th season? Then Michael beat the shit out him. I thought Michael was in control of the corner. It's weird that he would let Kenard still hang around him. Maybe getting hit in the face multiple times was punishment enough.

McNulty even points out in a later episode how "that reporter at the sun is eating up his bullshit serial killer story" He specifically mentions what a liar that reporter is. I don't know what kind of bullshit dream logic you followed to come to your conclusions anyway. So fuck you pal.

So let me get this straight. You've seen every episode of the wire and understood every plot point after only one viewing. Damn dude. You must be smarter than every fuckin person on this talkback. I commend you and hope you stay healthy. We need smart people like you in this world. Does the Mensa website have a talkback? Motherfucker, McNulty makes up a fucking serial killer. A journalist tries to tell him about how this very same "killer" who ISN'T REAL, "called" him and you think McNulty, the man who MADE UP this killer, BELIEVES HIM? Suddenly McNulty is just a dumbass instead of say, fucking around with the guy and seeing how far he takes his bullshit story, which is obviously what was going on exactly the type of thing McNulty would do. Jeez THAT IS COMPLEX. Maybe it does require repeat viewings to grasp this INTRICATE plot detail! If I'm the smartest guy in the talkback what does that makes everyone else here, (excluding you of course) being that they also failed to pick up on this idiotic idea of yours.

Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World

    by eggbeater

Listen cocksucker. The serial killer story made THE FRONT PAGE OF THE FUCKING NEWSPAPER! Newspapers get calls all the fuckin time from people who try and take credit for crimes they didn't commit. The impression I got was that McNulty makes up serial killer. Templeton makes up a phone call from the serial killer. McNulty thinks the phone call is from a random crazy person and tries to run with it. And read the whole talkback. I'm not the only person who thought this. And by the way. You are one annoying motherfucker. You try to push sarcasm so hard in your posts and you just come off like a little whiny bitch. I showed my roommate your posts and we just died laughing. You are just a fuckin joke.
What's great about this is that I just read both of our posts back to myself and we are basically arguing over one thing: I think McNulty believes Templeton got a phone call from a nut job. You think McNulty knows Templeton is lying. You are obviously right cause you've already seen the other episodes. What's funny is that either way McNulty would still be in the exact same position even if I was right. Our argument is completely pointless. But it was still fun and I still despise you.
