One of the Highlights of BNAT 9 Has Its Trailer Unleashed: MONGOL!!!

Published at:  Jan 31, 2008 7:15:44 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... This is one helluva great film. You don't need me to tell you that - obviously if its one of the 5 nominees for Best Foreign Film - but when it played at BNAT 9 - nobody in the audience knew that. What played out was one of the most intimate tales of an epic life we've seen. The story of Genghis Khan as told here is far more amazing than the basic tales of him being a Barbarian Leader - that's here - but the story of how he came to be, what he came from, the world of that period of Mongolia. It's just a stunning film. Then there's the woman in his life - and that story is just stunning. In a very odd way - this is a Valentine's Day film. It is heart-achingly romantic... a love spanning from childhood to ... well you know where Genghis Khan goes. This story is about how Mongolia ceased to be a series of tribes... and became an empire. The story is epic - but this is just the beginning. To the point where he became the one true Khan. And it is genius. A truly epic romantic adventure! Here's the trailer...

it's right there on the front page - I moved it from the top story spot - because - frankly - the chance that Ratner is going to get the job is basically done. Now there's far better directors in the mix - and chasing the project enthusiastically. The threat of Ratner was incredibly real - and was very close to being irreversible. That time has passed. Can't reveal the details quite yet. But there's no need for the story to be a "top" story.

    hmmm...that trailer was pretty lame

    by datascream

I'm sorry but it sounded like a Discovery Channel special. and the it didn't really show much to get me excited. It doesn't really matter though, since I'm sure it'll be DTV since most indie films get that shoddy treatment. So I guess I'll be seeing it on DVD. I may give it a chance then.

if you loved the source material, the script and the direction the movie was headed in... and a terrible director is considered... that director is a threat to what could be a wonderful film. It matters - who shoots these films. It isn't about just throwing anyone into that seat. This is a really great project and Benicio and Anthony and Rick Baker deserve a better creative partner than a hack.

The Mad Mongol. I used to manage him in the early 80s. Had a great chest slap and killer leg drop. He was a little slow in the ring though. Dumb as bunch of rocks, and smelled like a wet goat.

    by coop2046

Is anyone else tired of these foreign films having U.S. trailers with nothing but the trailer voice guy talking, as if they want to hide the fact that it's in subtitles. It's fucking annoying that so many people won't see a brilliant subtitled film just cause they dont wanna read. Still, I cant wait to see this movie

Original Russian (?) Trailer was more interesting...

    by ephor

... even though I couldn't understand a word of it. It showed a lot more and had some semblance of narrative. This international trailer is pretty ridiculous. the first 5 shots are of the 2 armies marching, back and forth between them, even though they're clearly not even fighting each other - they seem to be in different climates. I don't mind some english narration but if they just added a few lines of subtitled dialogue, for instance maybe scenes from his childhood, it would have been infinitely better. The bit where they randomly pronounce "Genghis Khan" is hilarious... yay 5 non-descript guys on horseback. And the literal visualisation of the narrative "to some he was a leader " -insert shot of sword held in air. "to some a god" - insert shot of people bowing. BAH! boring and lazy work. If I hadn't heard all thsi hype I wouldn't have even bothered with this film.

    by godmars

Oh, I'm sure its a wonderful movie, but I'm also pretty sure its 99% total fiction (The 1% being that Genghis Khan actually existed). This is not to single out this film, most "historic" films are mostly BS. Besides film, my other passion is history, and the factual mess they make out of most of these films really ruins alot of them for me.

    by chutneylix

Ratner's hate for Harry. Probably. Maybe. If allegations are true and if Harry (and AICN) outrage over the news put other directors in the running....Brett baby just lost out on a job. Thats a lot of negative energy coming back at ya Harry. Careful. And whats this about Yoko being with child?? Is this true???

But that fetish Hollywood had with period movies a few years back really killed my taste for the genre. It got to the stage where only every forth or fifth one was half-decent and I just got sick of them altogether. However, I would love to see a version of Vlad The Impaler. His story is basically where Bram Stoker got the idea for Dracula. Some of the shit he did was fucking cool. Eg. He slaughtered half of his own men to intimidate the enemy. I'd like to see that on a big screen.

    by skibum

Cheesy american voice-over makes it look like this movie belongs on the history channel. Why are studios so afraid to show the characters speaking a foreign language in the trailer? From what everyone who saw this at BNAT said I was kind of excited for this, but that trailer did absolutley nothing for me.

    Awful trailer

    by oski

I don't know if it's a good movie, but that trailer really did suck. Besides the terrible voice over, I think the worst part is when they show the guy standing on the ice and it breaks and he falls in. I mean, what was the point of putting that in the trailer. If it was part of a montage of other stuff it would have been fine.
