What Comic Book is Robert Rodriguez going to turn into a feature film' Well... look and see!
Every now and again a director tasks me. Challenges
me. Taunts me with their information. Recently it’s
been Robert Rodriguez. He’s been taunting me with
the knowledge that he was going to do a ‘Superhero’
movie, after the film he’s about to work on.
Now Robert’s been incredibly secretive with me
about his next project. In an almost ‘hide and seek’
sort of way. But basically, all I know about his
NEXT film is that involves two kids, is apparently
wild and is not BEDHEAD.
Well, when Robert mentioned at South By Southwest
that he had a Superhero film in the works my mind
immediately began reeling. Taking in every single
thing I knew about Robert’s comics taste, which are...
similar to my own, and began making a list of
characters that Robert would be interested in making
a film on based solely upon Robert being a friend.
This would be like you looking at a close friend and
trying to figure out which of the 75 superheroes
you’ve discussed in the last 45 minutes he would
most want to turn into a film.
Well, this was of course completely unpublishable. I
mean. The fact that Robert MAY be doing a
Superhero movie was ludicrous, until I knew which
one. And Robert was the last person I wanted to find
out about it from.
You see. He tasks me and I shall have him. So.... I
deployed a Robotic Drone to monitor each of the
comic properties that I felt Robert was interested in.
Scouring for every bit of knowledge I could gather.
And tonight... at approximately 2:45 in the morning,
the Robotic Drone came back with the golden chalice.
MADMAN
That’s what my sources tell me. Apparently, Robert
has just acquired the film rights and is set to work
with Allred to create what would be one of the
coolest friggin comic movies to be made this side of
HELLBOY.
According to my guys in the monitoring room, Allred
will be coming down this summer to write this sucker
up with Robert as the possible film after his
children’s flick.
Folks... I believe this is a perfect mix of project and
director. The mere thought of a Robert Rodriguez
MADMAN is... well numbing. Personally I’ve felt
that action and comedy were Robert’s strongest suits
and MADMAN is the absolute perfect mixture for
Robert’s manic directing skills. And in a lot of
ways.... Well, this is as exciting if not a bit more so
than the SPIDER-MAN project because... Well,
frankly David Koepp doesn’t instill a lot of faith in
me at the moment with that property.
You know. With Guillermo Del Toro making
HELLBOY. With Bryan Singer making X-MEN.
And with Robert Rodriguez making MADMAN... We
live in incredibly cool times. (unless of course my
sources on this one are wrong, in which case they’ll
need to be flogged till the flesh no longer hangs from
their bones.
Can you imagine where Robert would take ol Frank
Einstein’s third eye? Or what he’d have Frank do to
his doctors? WAAAAY to friggin cool.
Now a bit of a warning about this story. It isn’t
scripted yet, so you’re gonna have to remain calm and
collected on this one for quite a while I bet. It won’t
be getting started till sometime after our computers
don’t work anymore.

MADMAN!!! Yes, it's about time that good comics are making the film history. I think that the new wave of comic movies to hit(Spider-Man, X-Men, Blade, Hellboy, Mystery Men) is backlash against the early 90's stinkers(The Mask, Barb Wire, Batman 2-4). Finally talented filmmakers are making good comic movies. Madman? I've never thought in a million years that a Madman movie would get made, with Robert Rodriguez as the director no less. This is truly great news. Makes sense that this news is hitting now. The first new Madman comic to hit in over a year was released the other week. This would gel with the hiatus. Madman has been one of my favorite comics in recent years. There is nothing like it. I guess it still hasn't registered enough for me to formulate original thoughts and sentences. So on to my cast list: Madman/Frank Einstien: Johnny Depp, Joe: Cameron Diaz or Julia Roberts, Dr. Flem: Udo Keir, Dr. Bioffard: Jack Nicholson, Mott: Tom Arnold, Astroman: John Cusack, Bonnie: Pamela Lee/Anderson, Gail: Helen Hunt, Machina: Halle Berry.

Tell me, every now and then, don't you just have to take a step back, smell a rose or two, and attempt to contemplate just how COOL your existance is? Well, I know now that my contemplations will be even longer, knowing that Madman will exist on film... Of course, if Harry's sources are wrong, it could signal the end of the world, as brought on by maniacal Madman fans robbed of their hope... Oh yea, "Death: The High Cost of Living" will rock too.
-
ok, I haven't been reading comics since the early 90's when Spawn was a new thing. Who the hell is Madman?
Rob -
I have mixed feelings about a Madman film that Mike Allert would be involved in, having seen Astroesque, a film written, directed and starred by him. Astroesque was in my opinion a piece of crap, so excuse me if I don

I know that RR will defintely be in the super hero movie director hall of fame when he hits the screen with MadMan. Its a good move for him. Viva Rodriguez!!
-
That's simply FANTASTIC!
A cool project in the hand of the coolest director. I just finishesd reading "Rebel without a Crew". Great, inspiring book.
Can't wait to hear more about this. Go, Robert! -
There isn't a director out there that deserves the task of trying to get Madman onto the screen. And it would be very difficult. This would be like trying to make the comic Black Orchid into a movie... or why not just be completely ridiculous and make Marvels. Someone who has been completely overlooked (I think) is Jason Lutes, and his book Jar of Fools. That would make a neat movie... Let the man take a shot at it... but, I completely expect failure. He's not ready for such a project. Let him write another script, something original... hopefully he won't follow Tarantino's lead of having to fall back on someone elses (Elmore Leonard's) novels/writings for subject matter.

Does anybody know where I can get one of those brain-wash thingies from MEN IN BLACK? I just rented FROM DUSK TILL DAWN II: TEXAS BLOOD MONEY, and feel the need to erase my memory. (Yes, I know Rodriguez didn't direct it, but I think he was executive producer or something -- I didn't watch the end credits).
-
Y'know, I fail to see why everyone wants to see a medium designed to hold in your hands turned into crap by the sharks at the top of the entertainment food chain. Maybe it's to show everyone else in the world why we are so fond of these characters (only to have them end up as crap anyway, making comic book fans seem like we ENJOY crap... But I digress.).
I'm sure RR would do a great job at Madman with Mike Allred's help. No one has offered to get their grubby fingers into the pot (yet).
The whole reason I guess I'm so upset with the Hollywood "establishment" is formulaic thinking. Can we see at least ONE movie every couple of years that at least comes close to the true characters we've read about for all these years. Hell, the Alex Ford Superman script nailed it right on the head. The first time I heard about it on AICN, I thought "YEAH! An entertaining movie with the true core of the character." And then I read it. That's when I got pissed at Hollywood. An excellent script turned down to meet a producer's "vision."
My faith in Hollywood has very narrow bounderies. Maybe the smaller studios will "save" our comic characters. But if I never see another comic book movie ever again, I won't care. If that means only a few select people read Moore, Gaiman, Ennis, Claremont, etc. on a regular basis, then let the rest of the world be damned for missing out on quality AND entertainment.
Sorry for the rant.
But you should see why I got pissed in the first place:

Speculation. Idle speculation. First off, I have nothing but respect for this comic, but it's too willy-nilly to turn into a feature film. Second, it's totally NON-Rodriguez. I don't want to pigeon-hole him, but he's got such a nice feel for out and out action and blood-gore-festiness that I can't see him what basically amounts to a Terry Gilliam film with mild Coen overtones. Preacher's not a bad idea. Then again, neither is NEXUS. Or the Badger. What about other ideas for comix movies that just cry to be done? They don't have to wear funny suits, you know. Ms.Tree? The Question would be a personal fave. More than anything, though, I want a Kirby project done right. With all the nutty stuff intact.
-
It will never happen, why torture yourself. None of these superhero movies ever happen.
If it does....
I hope Robert R. got over whatever it was that he had while making The Faculty. That movie blew so hard it almost made me hate his other stuff. -
I forgot to mention Astroesque. I have to admit that i only watched the first 20 minutes or so but Fuuuuuck! The Worst. Mike Aldred might be able to right a good comic but forget about movies. Let someone else do it. Just adapt it from the books.
-
Ok, Rodriguez MIGHT be doing a MADMAN flick!?
Soooo- when's he gonna make like Kevin Smith & start doing comics? It would be a great way for him to contnue the adventures of "El Mariachi"! -
But, what company will produce it? And if they do, will they muck it up as usual?
-
I remember when Rodriguez was attached to this project. Whatever happened to it? And the better question, does anyone besides me still care about this franchise? I would love to see a talented director re-visit this great action pic from the 80's (the first sequel was pretty bad, however, I thought). The first one (directed by McTiernan, in his glory late 80's days) should an amazing amount of promise. While Raimi and Proyas come to mind, I really can't think of a director who would be *perfect* for this project. Any comments?
-
Hey There,
I want to confirm the fact that Rodriquez is doing MADMAN with Allred. I'm working with Michael on another one of his comics, "The Everyman" which is a very cool comic. I know for sure because I speak with Michael all the time and he is infact working with Robert on the script for Madman. You're info is on the money later buddy.
M Shuken -
UNIVERSAL, if i am not mistaken is the company that own's the rights to MadMan....And i don't think you should say that a director is better fitted to other projects....directors want to branch out and try other things...that makes you grow...rodriguez is awsome...he did well with his segment of Four Rooms...and i am tired of people knocking the faculty...so what if it is an amalgam of other works....he pulls it off with style and his films always end up keeping me entertained....without fail...trust in rodriguez if he does do this to make a great film.
-
Has anyone else noticed how shoddily-crafted Rodriguez's movies are? He's a really fast
director, gets scenes ready and shot post-haste--and it shows! Maybe Allred, if they work in really close collaboration, can add the necessary finesse to capture the comics visual sensibilities. You know what would be really cool--and a first: if they used cgi over-top the live action and gave it the same texture/look as the comic--the result of what I'm talking about here would look like an animated viewmaster scene--two-dimensional-looking, ink-outlined characters and props in a 3-D environment. The live-action underneath would work better than rotoscoping, for giving the cgi an odd-sort of realism. -
You want facts?
Yes, it's true. Mike has stayed with Robert in Austin where they created an outline for the script. Robert will be coming up here to Oregon where they'll work some more and so on. It's ROBERT'S film! That's the way Mike wants it. But trust me, when Mike doesn't like something HE LET'S YOU KNOW IT (but in a nice way)! This should leave comic fans VERY optimistic since Robert is optioning the rights with his own funds maintaining %100 independence. Yes, an INDY comic book movie! And while the production will be financed elsewhere, praise or blame can only rest with Robert and Mike. Now , Robert still has his "kids flick" to finish first, and from what Mike says this is more than worthy of your enthusiasm. It sounds wonderful. But while we remain hopeful that a MADMAN film will finally be made, anything can still happen. But this is certainly Mike's ultimate scenario. Also,Mike's comic output WILL NOT be suffering (I hold the whip) Not only will there be AT LEAST four more MADMAN comics this year but a new spin-off called THE ATOMICS whick is GREAT! Yes, I'm his wife so, of course, I'm biased. And ASTROESQUE may "suck" but I LOVE IT! Let's see what you can do with $8,000 and change. All my love, Laura Allred -
I thought From Dusk Til Dawn had great performances especially by Clooney and Tarantino but they should've stuck more with Tarantino's original script. Rodriguez isn't exactly the best writer and director out there although the Four Rooms segment was awesome. I would like to see all these comic book films focus more on the characters and less on the special effects and please don't make any more Spawns or Blades.
-
I hope this whole shit is true, because now I can't wait to see this project going on! "Madman" is a great choice for Rodriguez to show us more about his very own style of filming. Then, as in all his movies, Salma Hayek might be doing a cameo. WOOHOO.
-
What the hell was wrong with Blade? I thought it rocked. It was better than it had any right to be, considering the source material. And as for Preacher, it's already in development with kevin Smith & Co executive producing, Garth Ennis writing, Rachel Talalay (who did the INCREDIBLY under-appreciated TANK GIRL) directing and offers out to Ben Affleck for the title role and Sam Jackson as the Saint of Killers. And as for Rodriguez doing Madman; KICK ASS!!!!!!!!!! I still want to see the Tick or Captain Sternn though, damnit! Bruce Campbell needs the work.

We all want Johnny Depp for this. Don't deny it. Even if you hate his model-abusing guts you know he's perfect for the part. So ya know what? I don't think he'll take it. Has Depp EVER made a career decision that made any sense? (I thought Sleepy Hollow was the one, but the Depp Curse held: it's scheduled to open against Bond 19.) So we'd better start looking elsewhere. Pretty young space-cases who can act... hey! Elijah Wood! Oh, he'll be busy. How about Skeet Ulrich? (He'd have to shave that obnoxious goatee, but it'll be out of style by the time this gets made anyway, so that's OK.)

Remember that guy from "maniac Cop". "Tango and Cash" and those "Frogtwon" movies? If that guy is "Captain Stern" with that jaw of his, I don't know who is!

i don't know of this comic everyone talks of because well comics got too damn expensive and silly and i quit collecting years ago but... i do like robert rodriguez, i even liked the faculty.. especially because it ended with the aliens winning. at least thats my view, but my roommates say i'm wrong. i haven't seen it in a while but its the only way to make sense out of the ending, what with the drug dealer guy on the football team and the preppy girl hooked up with the dorky kid.. what the hell.. besides i think right before they cut to that final scene there is this little squirmy thing in the girl-with dark-hair's face. its not commented on and it only occurs briefly. it could have been my imagination, but i really dont think it is. anyways with the aliens winning it makes the movie cool, if the aliens don't win its not as cool. if anyone agrees with me, or can say for sure that this was the intent that the movie was made with, please reply, i want something definitive i can tell my roommates so they won't think i'm insane.
-
Just TRY and tell me that it wouldn't be good for a laugh!
-
Hey, elephantangelboy, thanks for giving away the ending to The Faculty, you moron.
