If CAPRICA Is Being Eyed For Production, Has Anyone Told GALACTICA's Ron Moore??
I am – Hercules!!
“I just got a call from NBC-Universal,” SciFi Channel VP Mark Stern says in the current, sci-fi issue of TV Guide. “They want us to take another look at [‘Battlestar’ Galactica’ prequel ‘Caprica’].”
Reconsideration for the long-shelved project was reportedly born out of the ongoing writer’s strike, as “Caprica’s” teleplay was completed long ago.
But a reader asked “Galactica” mastermind Ron Moore about the project on Wednesday, more than a week subsequent to publication of Stern’s words in TV Guide. That reader’s report:
Howdy Herc,
I won a contest for the pencils2mediamoguls and was in direct communication with Ron D. Moore and asked him about the prequel. His Words:
"Despite the rumors to the contrary, there's still no word on ‘Caprica.’ I have yet to get a call from the network about it, and if they're really considering it, they're keeping it to themselves."
Hope this helps clarify what’s actually happening with that.
So is SciFi, which has already greenlit the likes of “Frankenfish,” “MegaSnake” and “Mansquito” (to say nothing of “Flash Gordon” and “Painkiller Jane”), still not serious about putting the “Caprica” pilot in production?

But expecting SciFi Suits to do ANYthing intelligent is not recommended. They don't know quality, don't know what to with it when they stumble across it. BSG aside, PKJ had a decent pilot and a great casting of Jane--so they go from pilot to a series that not only replaces everyone, but utterly ignores the premise and backstory of the pilot.SciFi Channel: We Suffocate Quality
-
Sci-Fi channel wouldn't know a decent show if it bit 'em on the ass.
-
... for the Suits at SciFi They probably think it is a good thing.
-
It's not like their movies have writers
-
...and I can indeed confirm that I have no knowledge of the Caprica project, although I can confirm that I'm currently working on a new version of the A-Team starring an all-female cast.
-
i mean, it seems to be their plan to have only ONE good show on at a time. when galactica's over, what will they have? chupacabra vs. mansquito? blech.
-
I really did.
-
Sci-Fi passing (again!) on a show that has a chance to be great?
Typical. -
Maybe Sci-Fi will have Glen A. Larson produce but set it in the original series' mythology. Wow. Wouldn't that be great? I can smell the odor coming from my television now...
-
she's just in change of usa network as well.
and as long as bonnie is involved with skiffy, it will be about shitty cheap movies with narrow scripts and vapid characters.
here's to the next scifi picture which features (throws dice):
a) nazis
b) gargoyles
c) cloning
d) mutation
e) guns
f) all of the above -
"A-Team with an all female cast"If it is the RIGHT cast, this could work!
-
Not the most original idea. Charlie's Angels? The "FoxForce 5" dialogue from Pulp Fiction?
That being said, dudes love seeing chicks kick ass. It made Sarah Michelle Gellar's career. -

Just because RDM hasn't been called doesn't mean it's not happen
by eaglet1138
All Stern said was that NBC called. There's about twenty steps that have to be moved through before RDM is called. The writers' strike needs to be finished before the pilot can get polished and shot, so I see no reason they'd bother talking to a PICKETING WRITER this early. Give it time.

I will never watch Sci-Fi again (after BSG concludes, of course). And Fuck Sci-Fi's Flash Gordon bullshit.

Sci-Fi should peddle their shit at the Dollar Tree stores.
by teethgnasher
Yeah, Dollar Tree and Sci-Fi should set up a booth at the next Comic-Con.
-
I don't mean I'm looking for crazy star wars space action, but as far as ANY show's premise goes....Caprica sounds DULL.
-
Sounds like it would be like Dallas...or some other crappy soap! Will not watch it if they make it...unless they do an episode called 'who shot Adama'
-
Yeah, unless I'm missing something here, I agree. Why would they call the show runner while he's on strike? I guess he could produce it with Eick as long as they don't change anything in the script, but...
I dunno. Then again, the whole idea of shooting Caprica with the script on the shelf and without Moore sounds unviable. -
Many fans crapped all over Moore's BSG before it came out, and look at it now. He won over a lot of fans. But to convince fans he went the mini-series route first. If SciFi keeps playing it cheap, we could get a look at Caprica as a mini-series and see if we like it. It we don't, then SciFi saved a lot of money and had a filler show; if we like it, wait a year and a half and the series may come out long after the writers strike ends. It's a win-win for both the SciFi channel and the Viewers.
-
Like I said in the last thread... The reasons why they passed on it still exist regardless of the writer's strike or not. Those same reasons are why they will pass on it again. Sci Fi also likes to cock tease it's fans, marketing is likely saying don't let people forget about BSG before the next episode airs in like two fucking years. So they will release tidbits like this for a while.
-
podosphere, the idea that Ron Moore would re-imagine the A-Team with an all-female cast plays upon the fact the he changed BSG's Boomer and Starbuck from male to female. Dirk Bennedict played Starbuck in BSG and Face on the A-Team, so I guess this would give Katee Sackhoff a possible role.
-
The smart move is to stop moving the start of season 4 deep into the 22nd century for goodness sake. If the first few episodes do very well, SciFi should reverse the planned ending (i.e. write new shows to end the season)and give BSG a full season five which explores the mythological and societal impact of finding Earth instead of launching Caprica.
-
Sci Fi knows it has some pretty bad shows so it drags out this rumor every other month or so to generate some interest in the network.
-
You got the make geek, the female journalist, the female warrior, the female bitch and the make cop, but in the end, the day is always saved by the bone-headed redneck dude. It's like Xena, but instead of empowering chicks, it empowers the un-educated white guy. Pretty original if you ask me.
-
We want periodic MST3K vs. Sci-Fi Pictures broadcast specials and DVD releases
-
Seriously though, do Caprica as a December SciFi mini first.
-
BSG, while not a huge ratings winner, has a fiercely loyal cult fanbase rivaling Buffy's, and Caprica, being land-based, could be cheaper to produce than BSG. Not to mention BSG has earned the strongest critical response of any show in SciFi Channel's history.
-
Man, I'd watch that.
-
Just NO. Galactica has been great, and there is nothing wrong with just ending a story.
-
How's things? But, I must ask:"Are you High? Are you high Right Now?" I am only compelled to ask this as you are suggesting "the smart move" in the context of the SciFi Channel execs....When should we schedule your intervention?Seriously, though, hope all goes well for you! Cheers.
-
since they tend to fuck up pretty much everything, but Flash Gordan has actually gotten alot better. It's semi-watchable now if there's nothing else on, which is a vast, vast, VAST improvement from where it began. Kinda like saying "you're the smartest retard in the room", but hey, I'll take almost anything scripted over reality shows...
-
I'm shocked SciFi hasn't done it... I just couldn't leave without bashing SciFi a bit...
-
When I said "smart move" and "SCIFI" in the same sentence, I was in a dream-world, but I have awakened. How did I awaken? The SciFi Channel was on in the next room advertising their programming schedule (sans BSG)!Thank you for your offer of intervention, Chromedome! Should I find myself ensnared by that dream-world again, I rest assured that you shall be the Morpheus to my Neo.:)Cheers!
-
Red or the Blue pill? Dammit, I can never keep that straight.Just take em both, see what happens.... And follow the White Rabbit.
-
That show was good, and each ep looks like it cost $50 to make.
-
Hehe only joking. The flashbacks in Razor were jean-creamingly good, I know Caprica is set a bit further back, but it could be very cool. At this point, I'll take any Battlestar I can get. Make this happen please, pref with Ron Moore!
-
Mansquito et al may be billed as "Sci-Fi Originals" but most are straight to DVD fare they buy up the rights to broadcast rather than being Sci-Fi Channel financed productions.

STEP 1: Take one word from the following list...
NIGHT, DARK, DEATH, KILLER, FIRE, MAN
STEP 2: Take another word from the following list...
SPIDER, ALLIGATOR, LIZARD, DRAGON, WOLF, BAT, ROACH, MOSQUITO, BEAR, WASP, SCORPION
STEP 3: Mash the two words together somehow. For example...
DARK SPIDER, KILLER BAT, FIRE WASP, DEATH SCORPION, etc.
STEP 4: Write a 2-hour script around Step 3, cast it, and film it all within the span of one week.
STEP 5: Air it on Sci Fi and wait for the standard 2.0 rating from idiots that actually watch these shitty movies.
STEP 6: Rinse and repeat as needed.

How about working on that other series... I think it was called
by murdermostfowl
I know there is a writers' strike still , but this one has been bugging me for a long while. I absolutely love BSG.Like alot of talk backers, I was going around begging people to watch the miniseries back when it first came out, just because I knew people would like it if they gave it a chance. And now the more I watch it, the more I keep thinking... something is missing. All of the new story arcs, all of the new plots... there just aren't many great ones anymore. POssibly I am just suffering from a bad memory, since we only get to watch 2 episodes every leapyear or whatever the schedule is now, but what happened? Anyone know, was there a big writing shift to a different group? It just doesn't seem as clever anymore. I almost feel like it was a cop-out to make so many people cylons. it's becoming kind of like "lost" now. FOr all the years I yeared for multidiensional characters, I find myself trying to stuff some of these characters back into their archetype just so we can have some good solid war episodes or something.
*sigh* -
Isn't this "sciffy" trend totally played out yet? Can we please stop working backwards with our geek franchises?
-
is not Caprica.I want to see a series set on the Cylon homeworld during the gap between wars, the development/creation of the Skin Jobs and the culture. They could cut to spies they have in the colonies, etc, but the focus should be the cylon culture, plans, etc.
-
What I don't like about Lost is, funny enough, is one thing I like about about BSG. With Lost after S2 even, I felt the writers seem to pretend they have a larger story arc, but I never really believed it. But maybe I should cut them some slack since it's obvious they never thought they would be on for so long.
Perhaps not knowing if the show was going to get renewed turned out to be BSG's strength, and turned out amazing stories, and story arcs. I don't feel one second of BSG is "unimportant", or "flavor"
( well except for the entire Razor movie... I thought I would love it and I left not caring whether I had seen it or not, except for the old school toasters. )
-
...is the 13th Colony/Tribe's journey through the galaxy from Kobol as they make their way to Earth. We would cut and forth from the 13th tribe to see the demise of Kobol and the founding of the 12 colonies. The mini-series would show their decision to leave Kobol at Athena's dismay and their departure.
-
of Young Adama as seen in Razor, that little glimpse into his life as a pilot for a day was awesome.
-
I think Skywalkerfamily is on to something here.
-
I love the writing on BSG, although the whole Fatty Lee Adama thing just made me crack up every time he was on the screen. Personally i'd love to see a Caprica Storyline, i'm sure they could make it snappy and as exciting as the current series. The more BSG the better.
-
We can follow John as he solders together the Farscape module during the day and kicks back with a beer at night. No? Not a good idea? Then why would anyone think Caprica would be a good idea? What's up with Hollywood always trying to crawl back into the womb anyway? They think they're being safe by always recycling old ideas (remakes, sequels and prequels) and then blame TiVos and piracy when people stop watching out of boredom.
-
Opening scene: Fertilization of the egg.
-
There's a conspiracy in there, somewhere.
