That STAR WARS thing that happened this weekend that I didn't go to and the one I did!

Published at:  May 02, 1999 8:47:44 PM CDT

Tonight... Ahhhhhh... The reason I'm not in line for STAR WARS just yet. You see... There are other lines... There's a pattern... a system to our collective madness. You see. WE... We're geeks, real ones, not the guys out there raising money for charity (a noble pursuit I'll give em that) but for the rest of us. Well... We just love Star Wars. And tonight... For geeks around the country was the first unifying peek of what is to come.

You see, tonight was the MIDNIGHT MADNESS to acquire STAR WARS EPISODE ONE toys. Heh heh... And for folks like me (and Kevin Smith who was shopping at the Eatontown, NJ Toys R Us store as I got in line in Austin at 11:01pm central) this STAR WARS thing is not just a movie, but an entire gigantic sucking of cash from our billfolds. We are the helpless masses that wander in search for our Darth Maul flipfaced watches and inflatable Padme thrones. For me... this was... LINE ONE! Well, technically LINE TWO, the first one was at the UNIVERSAL CITY WALK to get in to see the first Trailer. But, for the month of MAY, this was line the first one. There were folks in costume (Boba Fett, Waampa and Imperial Guard) all three were outstanding, and a part of me wondered. How much longer these would be the costumes of choice. Would we soon be seeing folks in Maul wear, black men with shaved heads wearing Jedi robes and doing Pulp Fiction dialogue, little children wearing little Anakin outfits? Hmmmm

I arrived about an hour before the TOYS R US opened and... well I was probably number 300 in line. And before the doors slid open there were at least 400-500 people behind me. It was Father Geek, Copernicus, Quint and myself that dared this crowd. People were rapping on the concept of evil toy scum guys buying up all the Darth Mauls and selling them outside for $55. But instead, from these bastards I heard them talk of going to EBAY with their profiteering. Fucking assholes! I hate these people. Toys are meant to be opened and played with, not suffocating in a plastic death chamber whilst you wait to get rich!

Soon I was being interviewed by regular geek types that were simply documenting the LINE... Line one. One lady had her VHS tape confiscated by the TOYS R US gestapo that "Vill not TOLERATE anty shooootin' in ere!" So here it is... She interviews folks all in the line, then.... BAM... No more coolness. You know... This is the sort of thing that can result in.... Long standing prejudices against corporate entities.

When the doors slid open, the crowd rushed. Copernicus had run to the rear entrance to beat everyone in... He did! Thus collecting up many of the rarest toys. When those doors opened, humanity was no longer a chief concern. We were the lowest most base creatures on the planet. Driven by a singular desire, "MUST GET DARTH MAUL.... MUST GET JAR JAR BEANIE BABY..." Perhaps dual desires, but desire none the less. Covet was a word on our minds. We coveted what lay inside and if we had to push, shove, stampede and lie to get our toys, we were.

As we began rushing forward you could feel the electral adrenaline rush coarsing through your body. The toys... They were inside.... Get them... We rushed, no longer caring for our fellow people, I just pushed past, people grabbing hold of my leg to be pulled into the store with me. Little kids running down the EXIT aisles to get to what they wanted.

Inside... Swimming pools filled with figures, and the human piranha were praying on the nourishment we wanted. Chancellor Valorum figures were flying to the floor being tossed aside for nearly anything else. One kid screams out, "I GOT HIM! JAR JAR!!!!" The older crowd laughs, the kid is puzzled. The grown ups (well as grown up as a bunch of so called adults digging in a pile of Star Wars figures in a kiddie pool can be) asking "Have you seen any MAULS?" One fella was off on the side with a basket filled with MAULS... How the fuck did that happen? What the hell? He set up shop trading. A DARTH MAUL for each thing he wanted. He was a true WATTO.

Then as folks slowly began to be satiated with their legos and storybooks, the frenzy became a, "What do I have in my arms?" mode as everyone divided up to the three corners of the known universe (Toys R US was our known universe) and began to see what they had? Then began trading. Suddenly I saw a kindness to their fellow human beings. What a friggin JOY! Civility, humanity? Here? A smile crossed my face as I realized. MONDAY... Midnight.... TOWER RECORDS.... THE SCORE. Sure I've heard it, but not in my car!

We all left. I was nearly $200 lighter on my card. But... Heh.. I had toys! I began instantly opening EVERYTHING. Ships, figures, watch, strange microchip reading device... not sure how this thing works.... I got 14 figures and four space ships. Me a happy boy. You might notice a lack of updates today.... That's cause... Right now... I'm playing!....

My god this is fun... they make noises.... Cool noises.... heh heh... They talk.... My god, I need to become super rich! We all do! I only missed out on one thing I wanted, and that was the Darth Maul on his Sith Speeder. Oh well... Perhaps in the morning at TARGET!

NOW FOR THE THING I WASN'T AT

Ya know... In a 'Gorillas in the Mist' sorta way I wish I had been there. This sounds absolutely miserable. One fella called me up telling me how this handicapped dude on crutches was forced to stand out in this mud pit of a line whilst the heavens rained down upon him because there was no... "handicap line". And then another person called up screaming about how there was more rain in the tents than out of them. You know. I've set up at shows for my entire life as a dealer (save the last year) and... ya know. If a buncha drug using hippies like my parents and their friends could throw a show without any of these problems that were attended by more than 10,000 people... Well... Ya know... Um... George? Give Father Geek a call next time. He's only been doing this sorta thing since.... TIME BEGAN. At least put an Eagle Scout in charge, "BE PREPARED" Of course, Garp's Law does play into such events, thus making them the miseries we bitch and moan about till our memories fade and our bladders leak. Ahhhhh, I can't wait.

I'm lucky enough to live down the street(well ok a 15 minute ride) from the
site of the Star Wars Celebration. I just got back and was rather
disappointed.

I'm not a HARDCORE fan so maybe you want to take my words with a grain of
salt...

Major complaints....

1. The mainstages are outside under tents. It's rained all day! The weather
here in Denver has been really crappy for a week or so! Why do this outside?
The tents where miserable. The flood had huge puddles and the tents leaked!

2. The dealer room was in a tent too! WHY?? Why would you even think of
putting all these collectibles outside? Big puddles, leaking roof, WHY???
The dealers where pissed and from a conversation I eavesdropped on the
dealers where planning to demand compensation for the conditions.

3. No information packets where available. I kept hearing "they're on their
way". The finally "We'll have them tomorrow morning".

4. Again I overheard that a guest didn't show up and on of the stages was
empty with no MC.

5. The line for the office "Store" was just stupid. Me and my buddies waited
for over an hour to get in. As we approached what we thought was the
entrance we where informed that the line continued outside(in the rain) with
another hour wait. A few guys coming out with some very cool Darth Maul
jackets told us that once inside they only had ONE credit card machine
hooked up to a cell phone.

At least no one was shot by a psycho teenager. I hear along with videogames, and comicbooks, Star Wars causes people to go nuts and shoot people. It's something to do with teaching kids how to give in to hate, and "let go".

Whine, bitch and moan...I thought that was my job

    by damien667

I remember a couple years back at the re-release of Star Wars, when I paid ***$25*** for a party being thrown by the local independent paper and the theater. Of course, it sucked. The "food" they promised to have was eaten by the time I got there (they had under estimated the number of people), the raffles were giving away Star Wars comic books signed by some local artist (who hadn't contributed anything to the book, as far as I know-- maybe he KNEW the guy who had drawn it, which gave him the right to sign it in his place?). So, after the whole shin-dig, and having the bear sitting next to some guy who smelled like he hadn't changed his "I Luv Chewbacca" t-shirt since 1972, I wrote a letter and complained about the whole event. Know what I got? Three signed comic books by a local area artist. I know none of this compares to standing in the rain, but at least it was an OPEN AIR event, where those S.W. "enthusiasts" (read here: FREAKS!) could air out a little-- and maybe a get a little bath in the rain, as well.

It was, unfortunately, very poorly planed. And it was oversold. (waaayyy toooo many people) They also had pre-teens taking care of the parking - sadly, they didn't learn in school what a straight line is... Very rude guards at closing time Sunday night (at the front door) The THX setup had a lot of pops, crackles and sound fade outs. The Smithsonian video, in the THX room, was on a VHS tape with poor sound. The THX (speakers) setup was wrong - trust me, I know. (Kinda strange having THX reps there with a poor setup - Hey George.. can I have their job? I'll do much better.) I was the only person to help a lady, in a wheelchair, get out of a deep water puddle - in the dealer room! Sadly, I don't think another celebration will come to Denver after this mess. There was a lot of good things at the celebration... (Anthony Daniels, the guest speakers and stuff in the main dry section) But the bad stuff sticks out... way out. The Fiasco was worth it

    by steve tack

The Star Wars Celebration was one of the most poorly organized events I've ever seen. Almost no markings on the tents to tell you where to go, HUGE lines for the simplest things, and the worst part was that there was simply not enough room for everyone to see the main attractions. I got in line 90 minutes before the first presentation (the final Rick McCallum one) this morning and barely got in!

Friday was the worst. Total parking anarchy (no parking lot help), no portable toilets, and everyone had to wait in huge lines in the pouring rain.
(BTW, the tents were not leaking, it was condensation. Whatever.)

Still, once you got in it was pretty cool content. Ray Park is unbelievably cool. Someone asked him to do a backflip and he did it with no hesitation. He did a little martial arts sword thing that was kinda cool too. There were lots of preprepard video clips with all sorts of behind the scenes stuff and interviews, which were really well done. We also got to see the "Duel of the Fates" video, which is basically the trailers set to the music, but it does have a tiny amount of new footage. The ILM and sound effect presentations were REALLY interesting too.

And I actually got a kick out of seeing the full sized Anakin pod racer, C3PO (Episode I version!), battle droid, and X-Wing. Some of the original models were interesting too: a Millenium Falcon used on Empire (amazing detail!), an X-Wing, Y-Wing, 2-legged walker thing (AT-ST?), Tie Fighter, and even a fighter model from Episode I after pieces of it were blown off!

It's safe to say that just about everyone had a good time and are now more pumped up to see TPM than anyone really should be!

So, yes, it sucked in many ways, but it was worth it.

    A Night Under The Stars

    by anakin rocks

Harry, hearing that you opened up your toys warmed my heart! I ripped mine right open too (although I forgot to buy batteries so I can't use my Darth Maul lightsaber or Comtech reader or Naboo fighter just yet)! I LOVE toys, I buy them because I ENJOY them, NOT because I want to collect them & sell them later. I pretty much got everything I wanted although it was SO crowded that I ended up with two unplanned doubles and I missed out on Chancellor Valorum (I will probably be able to find HIM today though). I lined up at the Manhattan store at 6:30 & was glad I did because I was one of the first in. I must say that Toys R Us had planned this thing HORRIBLY, I mean how about letting in A FEW people at a time so there wasn't a CRUSHING number of bodies? On the other hand, the fans were WONDERFUL, people handed each other toys which were out of reach, helped each other out and actually SHARED. Wow! Needless to say, I am VERY tired this morning now that I have to go to work, but it was all worth it. I wonder if I have time to put together my pod racer before I leave...
    Not too much longer,

    5 years old again

    by joe buck

Waiting in line at a Toys R Us in Atlanta, I was 5 years old all over again. It was just an exhilirating feeling to see everyone geeking out. There was a news reporter there who was almost trampled when the doors opened. I was about 20th in line so I got a pretty good selection of booty. Kept it to $100 but got all the major characters except Anakin (who I never saw), Jar Jar (who I couldn't give a rat's ass about), and Queen Amidala (am I the only one who thought this was the worst looking of the figs?).
I saw, but never touched a Darth Maul, so I had to sate myself by buying the deluxe Maul with the button that makes his saber rotate, and I got the coveted Darth Maul and Sith Speeder. Picked up the Droid fighter for good measure (didn't like the look of the pod racer and held off on Naboo fighter). In and out in 30 minutes, but it was a blast!

Not living in the US right now is very painful. Having lived in Michigan for a long time and now Belgium,... this sucks. I guess the soundtrack will be out here this week but the other stuff?
This means I have to order online. What's the cheapest place? I've ordered from actionfigureexpress before and the service was good. Any place that's better? I'm going to have too empty my bankaccount, but it's worth it.

    Star Wars Toys

    by atarijawa

    I attended a Toys R Us Midnight
    Madness event in lovely Norwalk
CT. There were only about 50
people there and I managed to get
all 21 carded figures that were
released (oh yeah, in case you
didn't know there are 4 different
    battle droid variations and
theres only one set per case.). I
also purchased the Jabba the Hutt
Glop figure (easily one of the
    most disgusting action figures
    ever) and the Qui-Gon Jin(with
    articulated ankles for
    swimming!!!)/Cybernetic Fish set.
All in all a most cool evening
except for a few random jerks and
the Tv news team I managed to
piss off while they were live on
the air. I told them I knew
nothing about this so called Star
Wars Phenomenon and I was just
there for the new my little pony
    collection. Suckers,

    Only 4 people line line!

    by dlhstar

Our local mall toy store opened at 12:01 to sell prequel toys and the damnedest thing is that only four people showed up! (Other than myself, and the two guys I was with.) We went to the 24-hour Walmart at 1:00 and they were dead , too. (They had ALL the LEGOS, even the episode 4-6 sets. They must have held them all back for fear of putting out any TPM toys early...) I was strictly there for moral support as I only had $5 to my name at that time.

Personal opinion... Yeah, the toys look nice but the voice chips suck a little. I have no intention of blolwing $20 on that particular item, so it doesn't really matter. (NOTE: I was told by a manager that the in-store voice readers were shriller and higher pitched to be heard better in the stores. I don't know if this is true, but the in-store reader may turn out to be the one really rare collectibles of ep. 1 if that is the case.) But I'm saving my money for one lego set and Gasgano and pit droid. (Forget Jarjar and Maul, Gasgano will be the cult figure of ep. 1!)

Inquiry: Darth Maul Lightsabre candy sticks... Any opinions? I saw them, but the WM people hadn't torn them out of the boxes yet. (I know it can't be as cool as the "French-kiss Jar Jar" candy dispenser... :) )

    Star Wars Figures

    by sean montgomery

I skipped the 'midnight madness', and just dropped by my local toy department while on the way in to work this morning. No lineup, no mobs. I just waltzed up to the rack - passing the display of Phantom Menace novels - and took what I wanted (Darth Maul and Watto). Overall, the figures are okay, but not spectacular. At least they're no all 'buff', as the Power of the Force figures were (heck, in PoTF, even Grand Moff Tarkin looked like he could break a board with his forehead). But the human characters still don't resemble their real life counterparts. On the plus side, each has individual detailing, which means that some characters are all a bit different. Many of the Darth Mauls look a bit cross-eyed, so I advise buying in person rather than online, so you can pick the best one available. The chip thing is silly; a money grab. I just want them looking cool beside my workstation, I don't want them uttering crappy electronic messages.

    Good and Bad

    by madcow

Going in to the event on Saturday, I was prepared for the worst, so it wasn't a disappointment, rather what I expected. Huge crowds and lines. Like the others said, things weren't marked, so it was hard to know what you were in line for. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to see everything, I just hopped in whatever line I happened to be near. The highlight for me was the exhibitor hall. There is a lot of very cool merchandise coming out, especially the computer games. Awesome! While I was in line at the Hasbro display, I spotted actor James Duvall, who played Randy Quaid's son in ID4, and is currently in Go. I don't think anyone else recognized him, since he wasn't being bothered. Almost every booth was having drawings for their merchandise, and the Pepsi booth seemed to be giving the most away, having drawings every hour. The bad thing about the Pepsi booth was you had to be present to win, so people wouldn't leave the front of the booth, which made it almost impossible for the rest of us to try and enter the drawings. Since it was raining, and I was by myself, I didn't feel like standing in line for two hours to listen to the various speakers. However, it gave me chills hearing the sound coming from the tent, and then hundreds of people cheering. Yes, it sucked not being able to see everything, and it was too crowded. On the other hand, I thought the crowd control was done well, and as crowded as it was, everyone was polite, and there weren't many rude attitudes. I'm glad I went, and I had a good time, it will be something I'll always remember. Thankyou Mr. Lucas for letting Denver host this.

    Toys R Us Limits

    by joeyc923

Like many of you, I had a real blast last night. I did the toys r us thing last night, then opened my KB at 6.

I would like to know why TRU insists on catering to the black market. Can anyone really make the case that limiting someone to, say, two of each figure is somehow infringing on their personal rights as shoppers? I have read many posts this morning, horror stories of those low life bastards who got in line last night at 9 and bought 20 darth mauls, only to scalp them outside or, worse, on eBay.

We, the customers of Toysrus, should DEMAND that restrictions be placed on these degenerates. Is anyone with me??

    A funny story...

    by sainteuphoria

I have one pretty funny story about last nights mad dash for Star Wars toys. My little brother got in line here in Minneapolis, Minnesota at 10:15 when he saw the coverage on the nightly news! I joined him an hour later once I got off work. We were #20 and #21 in a line of roughly 500 or so people. Regardless to say, after we got a hold of two of each thing (as was the limit per person per item) we pulled down a side isle and began to make sure we had absolutely EVERYTHING we needed. At one point, my little bro realized he only had ONE Padme... he was tired, it was painfully hot and sticky and he had just fought (valiantly, mind you) to make sure he had TWO Darth Mauls... so, like a war zone, he requested I "go back in" while he provided cover fire so I could secure him his second Padme... after fighting through the throng of crazed Star Wars fans in full-on-savage-fanatic mode I successfully nabbed one... and it was still in good condition, albeit a bit damp from the lingering perspiration. Back at the encampment, and here's the funny part, some guy came walking by, zombie like gaze transfixed somewhere off in space, undoubtedly internally berating himself for showing up late. He turns to me, sizes me up, and like a junkie so deep within the throes of withdrawl he has no sense of reality, whispers the question "Did you get a Darth Maul?" "Yes", I answer. His eyes light up ever so slightly... his next question struck me as amusing: "Can I just... see it?"
Understanding the rage that IS Star Wars Toy collecting, I obliged. He studied it for a moment, emotionless. Slowly, the sides of his mouth began to rise into a bizarre, blissful smile.
"Thank you." With that comment, he shuffled away. That was my cue to check out.

Uh...Lane & my experiences & TRU - Why no cameras????

    by pdaddy

First off (and I don't know why I'm leading off w/ this - I think I'm just going to ignore LM from now on), Lane you've now solidified my opinion of you as a selfish asshole. I hope you realize that by claiming that a figure was part of limited set when it wasn't, that that's tantamount to fraud - hell, I think it is fraud. Please, just go away and wallow in your own misery. Anyway, here was my experience - sadly, I was unable to line up for toys last night. I had a HUGE med school exam this morning and was in desperate need of studying last night. It was a close call, though, as I really wanted to get first dibs. So, I sent out one of my friend's girlfriends to get me some figures (she was getting figures for my friend). She got me a Maul and a Qui-Gon - COOL. After my exam, I went over w/ another friend to FAO Schwartz and picked up the double sighted light saber (40 bucks, but I had my heart set) and an Obi-Wan. Double coolness. At the store, there was a news reporter for the local NBC affiliate and she was doing her taped report in front of the camera w/ the light sabres in hand. Anyway she kept on pronoincing Qui "Key", (I corrected her), but then she was like "What are these things again?" - POINTING TO THE SABRES!!!!!! We told her they were light sabres - man, she was a typical reporter flake. I didn't get the "Comm Chip" player or whatever it's called - I might get that later. For all you Chicago folk, I had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever getiing anything that I wanted at the FAO on Michigan Ave - they still had everything there - so check it out. Here's my question - for all you people who had your tapes confiscated by Toys R Us - What the hell is the rationale behind it????? I just don't get why they have their panties in a bunch over you guys documenting your experiences??? Is there something they are trying to hide? What's the deal??

That's double-sided light saber (not double - "sighted") - I don't know why but when I'm in a mad rush typing, I spell out phonetically sometimes - doh!!

    People are sick

    by slick21

I've got love for every star wars lovin' individual around. But to think that people are selling those damned things on the black market they call ebay, fuck them all! Seriously...the toys are for the KIDS. Maybe collectors, by some stretch of the imagination...but just think. When you were young...all you wanted to do was grab a hold of that X wing fighter (meaning, ripping open the plastic, having no worries about "value" of something opened, not a care about how your dog chewed up the little thingy on top that used to make the buzzing noise but doesn't work anymore). The reason you used it was: IT WAS FUN. And the profiteers are just ruining it for those Lucas wants to effect the most: the kids. Hell, George Lucas is probably damning these people to hell already (it is he who they base thier petty livelihoods around, am I right?). All I am saying is this....before you go get in a fistfight for a damned 3 and a half inch plasic figure down at the local Kay Bee toy store, why not do something for someone else? Imbue the fantasy of it all that you had when you were a kid. Get some satisfaction out of life. Go out, get some of the toys, and hell, give em to the kids. Watch their faces light up. See how you feel then. I'm sure it would be more than some cheap "damn, don't it look cool" feeling when you tack up the package onto your ceiling. This is by no means a way for me to blow sunshine up your ass. I just want a wake up call to be sent to those in it for all the wrong reasons.

I got a Sith Speeder, Harry, and Sebulba's Pod racer

    by captainact

Boy, what a great experience last night. I went to the Toys'R Us in King of Prussia, PA last night to get my Star Wars booty. I drove by at about 7:20 to see if there was a line. No one was there, so I thought it would be safe to go home and return later. I went back at about 11:20 and there were only about 15 people waiting in line, so I was happy. We passed the time by talking Star Wars and how nuts we all were and how much we hoped no news crews came by. (None did.) By the time the doors were about to open, there were about 50 to 60 people there. Right before the doors opened, 2 guys dressed like Stormtroopers came out. These were real costumes, not the cheapy things. They even had the voice synthesizers. Pretty cool. The doors opened and the dash started. I grabbed a cart and headed around to where everything was. I stopped in the first section, which really had a lot of crap. A lot of people passed me when I slowed down to get to where the figures were in the second section. By the time I got over there, the people were 2 or 3 deep. I'm tall, so I started reaching over people to grab all the figures I could. I managed to get a lot of the figures I wanted, but couldn't find Darth Maul. There were no more on the shelves. So I grabbed a Sith Speeder with Darth Maul as a consolation, when they brought out more boxes. They had TONS of figures left. I can't imagine anyone left last night without all they wanted. But the one thing I really wanted and hadn't found yet was Sebulba's pod racer. I just think that character looks REALLY cool and I can't wait to see him in the movie. (Horse face, arms for legs, legs for arms....The next Boba Fett!) Anyway, I saw someone had one in a cart and I asked where he got it. He pointed to a shelf where all I saw was Anakin racers, which is not what I wanted. So I moved all of the Anakin racers out of the way to find my top prize: the last Sebulba pod racer (on the shelves anyway). I was so happy. I have it on my desk right now if front of me, although I still need to put the stickers on. It's SO COOL! I also have the Sith speeder and the doubles of the figures I got (Obi-Wan, Jar Jar, C-3PO, Watto, Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Anakin, Darth Maul, and Darth Sidious) on my desk. I managed to get 20 of the 21 figures. I think I missed Senator Palpatine. I'll have to try for him later and get some other doubles of the figures I like so I can put them on my desk too. Total spent: $255. I'm sure I'll wind up spending a lot more in the course of the rest of this year. I can't wait until May 19th. (I hope I can get in!)

    Cool!

    by foster zygote

Just saw "Duel..." on (ugh) MTV. I like it. The few new scenes are cool but not too much more revealing. Just enough of a tease. 'Nuf said. Also: Lane, shame on you for exploiting the mentally handicaped... What idiot would pay a small fortune for something that might be worth $15.00 in ten years? The stuff that's worth a lot today is the quirky stuff like Chewbacca mugs and Star Wars Color Forms. Not the mass produced stuff. And for Santa: You must be a blast to ride home with from any movie. If you were stuck in a Fomula One car and asked to drive for 10 seconds without crashing I'll bet you'd swear that no one could drive that thing. But I don't know, maybe you've got the Chiltons book on the speeder bike. **** Kid Rock? In ten years this guy's gonna look as stupid as the "toughs" in Beat It. I gotta change the channel before I get cancer.

    Hey Santa, Vintage stuff!

    by kieran

I laughed myself silly. Really, champagne comedy! It reminded me of an article that Spy Magazine did a few years back, analysing how fast Santa would have to travel on his Sled if he were to actually reach all the kids in the world in one night. The 'scientific' analysis including graphic descriptions of how many magic reindeers he would need, how fast they would have to go, and given that speed, and the tremendous heat even a magical aerodynamic reindeer would generate ploughing through the atmosphere, how long is would take for each of the reindeers to 'slough off' into a kind of charred reindeer goo. If I recall, Santa had almost 2 seconds before he died a horrible & fiery death.

Those damn NYC Cops at it Again!!!

    by zerofactor

Two tales of the "Midnight Run".

I was at a Toys r Us in Queens, NY. I went to Queens because I heard the figures would be a buck cheaper then good ol' Manhattan (they were). I got there at 10:30PM with my girlfriend (who wanted to go look for Aliens figures) and her old roomate (His goal, a Corporate Mankind). We were about 30th in line. At 11:30PM a NYPD Police van pulled up, they banged on the Exit door and were let in. Were they their for crowd control? To bust heads if anyone got out of line? Nope. THEY WERE THERE TO BUY ALL, I repeat, ALL THE 12 INCH FIGURES!!! They had two carts full of everything!!! They manger waited to open the doors until they were rung up to avoid the angered masses. No one realized the damage until we were told that the only 12 inchers left were a few Queens!!! But besides the cops all was good, people were exchanging figures and helping others find ones. I had a guy in a Star Wars t-shirt come back with a box of figures asking people what they needed, no trade or nothing! He handed me a Boss Nass, no problem. But once again the NYC Police show why everone here loves them so much!

THE GREATEST STAR WARS SPOILER EVER TOLD!

    by paragonian

I knew you'd all want to read this. You want to know the reason it's always raining during these things, God is showing his contempt for you all! Oh well, I guess if this's what makes you all happy than go ahead and do it. Just be glad my planted explosive devices failed to go off at my local Toys R Us store. By the way, does anyone have an extra Darth Maul. If you can't beat em, join em.

    Toys and Screenplays

    by withnail

Lo, I have walked through the valley of temptation. Being a daily reader here, I can't say that I haven't read my share of spoilers, but today I held the illustrated screenplay in my hands. I flipped through, stopping at one or two bits of dialogue, when suddenly a little Darth Maul appeared on my shoulder. "At last, the screenplay has revealed ourselves and the Jedi. At last we will have revenge." Then, on the other shoulder a tiny Yoda appeared. "Control, Control, you must learn control!!" I looked up at the official scrapbook, screenplay, novelization, comic adaptation, money in pocket, debating. Darth siduous appeared behind Darth Maul. "Buy them out. All of them." Then Obi-Wan behind Yoda "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" and so with great effort, and a slightly fuller bank account, I put the screenplay down after only a cursatory glance. "You've failed your highness. I will wait for the movie, like my father before me." This will NOT stop me from buying the soundtrack however. Also, The guy at the bookstore got really mad and started electrocuting me. But that's another story.

You're NOT in the mafia? Damn! I was hoping to ask you to do a little "clean up job" for me. Did the guy in the Blazer look anything like the guy who got busted back stage with the fake posters in The Song Remains the Same? Well, he was probably in the same union anyway. And as for stormtrooper farts, does anyone really mind their own farts? I've only had to pull over and get out once (after a lot of jalepenos). It's the other guys that get you. Maybe we could ask NASA about that. Airtight suits just prevent you from sharing.

they can't be THAT limited edition

    by bitchass

I went to Canadian Superstore this afternoon to get some film developed and they had, literally, a SHITLOAD of Darth Maul and Anakin figures... are these actually limited edition? or do they jsut distribute them differently around the country?

Also, they're only $9.88 Canadian - doesn't that make it quite a bit cheaper than in the US?

    TV Commercials

    by lobos

Has anybody seen the new tv spots? What do ya'll think? I gotta agree with JFK-2000, the one love spot definitely leads you to believe that Qui-Gon is Anakin's father. I don't believe Lucas is that ham fisted, it's a red herring.

    by quentin2

Look, I have the fucking script. He ain't annie's father! AND IS NOT FOR ONE SECOND IMPLIED THAT HE IS ANAKIN'S FATHER! In fact, Qui-Gon questions Shmi about Anakin's birth. Shmi responds by hinting that he was a virgin birth. IN FACT, Qui-Gon brings Anakin before the Council and says that he believes that Anakin was concieved by Midi-Chlorians! NOW, I INVITE ANYONE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOVIE TO CHALLENGE THIS INFORMATION.

    All your shopping needs

    by withnail

As I mentioned in my above post I did see some dialogue while I glanced through the screenplay.

MACE WINDU: Yoda, hand me my lightsaber.

    YODA: Which one is it?

MACE WINDU: It's the one that says bad mother fucker on it.

And of course the Obi-Wan voice over section

OBI WAN: Choose life, choose the lightside, choose a lightsaber, choose fighting mind numbing throat crushing sith lords. But why would I want to do that?
(This is just before his compelling "It's shite being a Jedi" speech)

Speaking of Sith Lords, come on down to DARTH MALL for all your Star Wars shopping needs. Forget the Sith Cycle, how about a delicious Sith-sicle at our food court? (Raspberry Sherbet with black licorice mixed in and a few peanuts sticking out of the top.) Buy a pair of Qui Gon Jeans, or a Jar Jar of jelly beans for the kiddies. Kids will love the "Pods and Sods" store, and Watto's "Everything for a buck" store. (No republic credits please) so do a Jedi flip over the "Gap" and come on down!

The Force will be with you...from 10:00-9:00 on weekdays 10:00-5:00 weekends and Holidays

Alright, the commercialism is a tad rampant but IT'S STAR WARS!!! YEAH!!!!

Apology to Lane & Double-Sided Saber

    by pdaddy

OK, I'll start my post w/ Lane again (sigh). I'm sorry Lane for misinterpreting your posts - I thought you were being serious and I guess sarcasm doesn't translate well across the internet. My bad. Anyway, I've got a question for all of y'all who bought the double saber. What do you think? Overall, I like it, but I've got a couple complaints. I agree w/ the previous poster in that I wish the saber would light up other than in the "flash" of contact - although I do love that flash. My other problem is that the "On/off" button and "Reset" can be pressed by accident a little too easily. I mean, you're going along bashing things left and right (w/ some cool sound effects and light displays) and then, OOPS, the saber goes off b/c the buttons get pressed if you merely brush them. The buttons are too close together and are both right where one of your hands goes when your holding the saber. OK, enough bitching. Don't get me wrong - otherwise, the saber rocks - I love how you can jerk your wrist and get the whole saber to suddenly "ignite." I like the "hum" of the saber, and I like how it's over 5' long in length. I'm gonna try to get the choreography of the fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul down that you see in Trailer B. I need to go practice....

    Soundtrack & Some ??'s

    by njfilm20

I just finished giveing the soundtrack a listen and all in all it was awesome. The tracks that stood out for me was the 15th and 16th tracks ( Qui-Gon's Nobel End & The High Council Meeting/Funeral ). One track though ( #17 ) was pretty tough on my ears and, to put it nicely, was horid. I simply couldnt take those kids in there.
Man, was this a fucking tease listening!! Thank god there is only 16 days and counting.

Hey does anybody know if the theaters are going to start showing EP1 at 12 midnight? I would think so. And would they just go on all night or would they have to close? One more thing, can you get tickets in advance at the theaters or just online?? Just answer me pack in a post or drop me some mail. Thanks.

I remembered that the SW shit went on sale at midnight and we switched the tube on to see all you damn geeks acting like the geeks you are and we laughed it up at your expense. Ahh...by the way, where I live, a friend of mine who is a collector works at the aforementioned superstore and he and his co workers got to pick out the shit they wanted before they put it on sale. that is the way to do it, I guess. about Darth Sidious...

    by 4-lom/zuckuss

...is it just me or does anyone else think that Darth Sidious and the honorable Sen. Palpatine are, in reality, the same person. I mean come on. Their voices are similar, they have the exact same chin line, and with these new phrases that the toys speak, Sidious' figure has such Emperorisms as "my young apprentice" and "you have done well." OK, that last one isn't very telling, but to me the first one is. Anyway, if anybody agrees or disagress with me, feel free to call me on it.

Jim, I wondered about the Queens voice too. This is a long shot guess but what the Hell. I noticed that her voice was only lower when she was in her ceremonial outfits. Perhaps she has some device to make her voice deeper for her encounters with other diplomats? (????) And Santa, when one of my friends would yell something like "Get the fuck away from my doughnut you scavenger!" it was no fun unless someone responded with something like "I'll take that damn doughnut and your life too!"

    by foster zygote

Years ago I would see Star Trek fans at conventions on the news, the ones who would indignantly say "Trekker" when the talking head called them Trekkies, and think "I'm glad Star Wars fans don't act like that". But somehow I think that the news cameras will be focused on the inarticulate kooks in the full costumes and masks come the 19th. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a stormtrooper costume, but to mount in the corner of my TV room like 16th century armor, not to wear in public. Oy!
