Wait A Minute... Who Did They Audition For Namor?!

Published at: Jan. 24, 2008, 4:02 a.m. CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. I have nothing to say about this. It baffles me that much.

One on One with Jason Statham! Jason Statham talked today with IESB about The Bank Job, Crank 2, Transporter 3 and, believe it or not, Namor, the Sub-Mariner.

    Really?

    by Zauriel

I'm not sure what to think about this. I'm somewhat partial to Statham, but Namor?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:04 a.m. CST

    When I think of Namor

    by Shub-Wankalot

I think of Jason Statham. Sure.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:05 a.m. CST

    Wow, my first first.

    by Zauriel

I promise I won't let it go to my head.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:06 a.m. CST

    Yeah, I'm baffled as well.

    by Shermdawg

After the trainwreck that was Transporter 2, do we really need a third installment?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:07 a.m. CST

    He was kidding...

    by Ladonite

"Later on, Statham joked that he was going to be starring in The Submarine" http://www.movieweb.com/news/05/23705.php That was ages ago. He's probably still joking...

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:15 a.m. CST

Hey Mori, not busting your chops, but...

    by Shermdawg

...are y'all ever gonna address what's going on with the Wolverine casting?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:18 a.m. CST

    Excellent news -

    by Samson_K

Because I just love the fact that so many people get frighteningly wound up by casting of comic book characters - I cannot think of a single exeption to the rule. I have no real nowledge of Namor but from the artwork I've seen of him I don't think there's any reason why Statham couldn't play him.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 4:26 a.m. CST

    Riiight....

    by Knuckleduster

And Mary-Kate Olsen is getting cast as the Black Panther.

I have no real knowledge about Namor - wings on his ankles looks like Spock, flat head? But I do know that everytime a superhero casting is mentioned on here a Unicorn dies! I wouldn't hit anyone over Namor - though God help the world if they miscast Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew!

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 5:32 a.m. CST

    Just a thought...

    by Ladonite

Heath Ledger would be better in the role, and he's dead. Too soon?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 5:46 a.m. CST

    Has no-one realised....

    by the ageless stranger

....that Statham has one character, and one only: Cockney spiv gangster in Guy Ritchie films. Anything else he tries to do is a disaster with a terrible accent. Also, Namor looks ridiculous on paper, so imagine, if you will: a shaven headed cockney spiv gangster, wearing the spangley green underwear and winged heels of Namor. Tremble before his power!

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 6:18 a.m. CST

    Statham for Tintin!

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 6:25 a.m. CST

    Statham as Tony Stark!!!

    by SpencerTrilby

    how's that "too late"?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 6:37 a.m. CST

Leonard Nimoy as Namor. CGI de-agify him.

    by CreasyBear

He's the only one who would really fit the look of the comic.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 6:50 a.m. CST

    Mark Dacascos, fools!

    by DocPazuzu

You know you want it to be so.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:06 a.m. CST

    Given a nice hair piece...

    by Varakor

I think Statham can pull it off, because he has that really pissed off look that's needed for Namor, who always looks pissed of.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:11 a.m. CST

    You always here suggestions . . .

    by Nice Marmot

. . . to make the film version of a character black. I think Namor could be done Asian. Think Jin from Lost. On Statham as Namor, fucking retarded. If it were his first action flick I'd be intrigued. After taking every idiotic action role thrown his way post-Snatch, not so much . . .

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:37 a.m. CST

    Crank 2?

    by Lawguy

Unless he teams up with Zombie Tony Almeida, I don't see how that could happen.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:38 a.m. CST

    Zachary Quinto for Namor!

    by SpyGuy

STAR TREK should be wrapped up by the time principal shooting begins on this and he's already used to pointed ears. Seems like a no-brainer...

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:42 a.m. CST

SpyGuy took my opinion! EL BASTARDE!

    by Cletus Van Damme

Yup, he's already got the ears on, just shove ZQ in the pool and be done with it already.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 7:52 a.m. CST

I always think of Hugo Weaving as Namor

    by zer0cool2k2

although he's probably a little old for what they're imagining. but just look at him in those pointy ears in the LOTR films

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 8:20 a.m. CST

    Christopher Molari all the way

    Good for Black Adam,too.

    by phool2056

He's definitely up to the task. Who else can anyone think of buff enough to fill the speedo, but with enough class to be the Atlantean prince?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 8:32 a.m. CST

    Namor...

    by rutgersjaffo

Lamest. Superhero. Ever. Note to all Supervillains, simply perpetrate your crimes away from the ocean and this goober with wings(!?) on his heels will not be able to thwart your plans for World domination. That is all...

    ASIANS DO IT BETTER

    by samurai sark

    Jason Scott Lee (Bruce Lee)
Tony Jaa (The Protector)
Marc Dacascos (The Crow Series)
Daniel Dae Kim(Lost)
Ken Leung(Rush Hour/X3)

All of these would make a better Namor than Statham. Considering the tone of the series thus far, I don't think they need a GREAT actor, just a physically gifted, seemingly arrogant bastard. My Number One pick?

Rick Yune (Fast&Furious, Tomorrow Never Dies)

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 10:43 a.m. CST

Moriarty, it's the Battlefield Earth casting method!

    by Archive

It's actually quite simple, so focus your puny human mind and you will understand. Take a bunch of movie dorks, strand them alone and hungry in the wilds of February, and whatever they watch first must be their favorite snack! Then, we will have LEVERAGE!

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 10:47 a.m. CST

    On a whim . . .

    by Nice Marmot

. . . I looked up Statham's info on IMDB. First, it doesn't seem possible that Snatch is going on 8 years old. Yikes! Second, I wasn't exaggerating, Statham has done nothing but shit since, although I haven't seen him in that last Ritchie flick, but I think I'm guessing he plays the same character w/ a different name. Third, there is a fucking Crank 2 and an Italian Job sequel, titled the Brazilian Job, on the way. These on top of that Death Race remake. For fuck's sake, why am I letting this shit bother me so much???

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 11:14 a.m. CST

    Statham definitely looks the part.

    by LoneGun

However, you need someone with grand acting chops for Namor, or at least someone with grand screen presence. I think, under the guidance of a strong director, Statham could pull this one off.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, noon CST

    Jude Law

    by Mosquito March

I always thought Jude Law would be a good Namor, and with Oscar nominees like Norton and Downey, Jr., singing on for the new Marvel movies, I don't see why they couldn't snag him for that.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 12:55 p.m. CST

zer0cool2k2, Weaving's got the voice for sure

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

I imagine a deep and commanding voice. Looks wise Namor has always had dark hair and squinty eyes. I'm not being racist, that's the way he's drawn. Samurai Sark had some good suggestions. I'd put Marc Dacascos or Daniel Dae Kim at the top.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 12:58 p.m. CST

Nice Marmot, so you're saying The Transporter

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

sucked? Quite a few would disagree with you on that. The One was great although he was only a supporting character.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 1:10 p.m. CST

    Who really

    by Shivv

gives a flying (or swimming) fuck about this Aquaman knockoff anyway?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 1:20 p.m. CST

    Statham

    by MacTard420

I think he just takes what is offered to him. He's probably grateful he gets paid to work in the movies and only realizes that most of them are not very good. Crank and Transporter are both fun. but Dungeon Siege, WAR, The One? C'mon Jason!

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 1:27 p.m. CST

    Namor not Aquaman knockoff

    by Jonas Grumpy

Namor is not an Aquaman knockoff. It's the other way around. Namor first appeared in comics almost two years prior to Aquaman. He also predates Spock by almost thirty years. Get it right, you knobs.

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 1:34 p.m. CST

This is why this is AWESOME...

    by ImJustSaying

Before the acting, before the selling stolen shit on street corners, before the modeling Jason Statham was a professional swimmer, like... full blown in the olympics, man. I'm up for being down for this.

    by Rufferto

but neither did Elektra and a lot of others. I thought if he'd be in a bad movie it would be Fantastic4 three. But who am I kidding? I bet Avi Arad is still trying to direct a Venom movie. I'm sure that why he pushed so badly for the character to be in Spider-Man 3.

    by Jonas Grumpy

Surely they could dress the actor in the black open-chested '70s outfit of Namor's, complete with the scalloped wings under his arms?

  • Jan. 24, 2008, 3:55 p.m. CST

    Ankle Wings

    by Jonas Grumpy

I think it was the original OHOTMU that described Namor's ankle wings as resembling the fins of a fish more than a bird's appendages. Since then, I've wondered why no one ever seems to actually DRAW them that way. Here's hoping they're portrayed in that manner in the alleged movie.

    Asian Namor?

    by samurai sark

Why the fuck not. I like the idea. Sue Storm is Filipino, Nick Fury's about to be a black guy. These are roles I think one can alter races for. Captain America needs to be gringo. As does Thor. But if there was an asian Namor, Idon't think comic fans would cry (no more than usual anyway ;p)

The comic book movie era is near it's end....

    by Lanceloco

When you have Namor getting his own moviw, you just know it is. I mean really, Marvel has kinda blown their load, Granted then have a few more charcters to build a trilogy around (Captin America, Thor, Silver Surfer, Wolverine) but after that, there isn't too much. DC has ALOT of potential, but it's potential that will sadly will never be reached because they have no fucking clue what to do when it comes to a comic book movie (aside from Batman THANK GOD!!!)
