Not to blow my own horn or anything, but come on now.
-
and let me assure you it is amazing. 5.4 is the best of the season and 5.5 is pretty great too. So much to talk about but I don't want to spoil anything. This is the greatest series ever.
-
...I don't think this ever got any sort of televised broadcast here, even on cable. Add to which, we are only up to season 2 on DVD. I'm just gonna wait tis season out and hope on a giant ass box set at the end.
-
People fall off the wagon. They need their fix, their hit. That happens all the time. It's not a Why couldn't it happen to McNulty? Really people have to understand that this isn't a fairy tale. Everything will not end up in a nicely wrapped bow. People drink after going on the wagon. It happens. Just like it did with McNulty. Deal with it. By the way I am really impressed witH Steve Earle. He has some serious acting chops.
-
Yes, I know it's not a fairy tale, and that's one reason to like the show. Just sometimes, I wish it wasn't cynical to the point that everything has to turn out badly. But, yeah, McNulty's issues make complete sense. And maybe his change last season was a little too abrupt. And I can acknowledge that the show remains great and realistic, while still optimistically hoping McNulty turns things around. I guess that shows the power of a series when you're rooting for a character. But in this episode, even Bunk seems disappointed, and not just in his crazy scheme.Oh, and Michael and Dukie don't chat up two white girls, just one. Unless my race detector's off a bit.
-
With the show having not ended, I would not write off McNulty just as yet. And yes, people can quit a habit abruptly. They can also fall back into trouble. Also tragic figures do tragic things. It's good to be disappointed in what McNulty has done and not done. Not a flaw in the show at all.
-
I've seen ep 3, and HBO's own blurb gives away way too much.
-
These first three episodes seem to be leading towards something big. Will Avon play Marlo into a trap? Will Omar seek revenge on all those responsible for Butchie's death, including Cheese? Will Michael and Dukie continue to rise in the criminal empire? And will McNulty can a handle on it all and do some real police work? I certainly hope so, and cant wait to find out. This season is showing just how deep the game can be. And i for one, have been loving every second of it. Only 7 episodes left though. Noooooooo!
-
I skipped all of the above...to "spoil" this series would be akin to learning that Darth Vader is actually Luke's father during the Cantina sequence (I'm still trying to forget the "first" three movies). No way in hell do I want to know what happen to whom before it actually happens! Like the mythical Cyclops, who asked for the power to see his own future...and when his whis was granted he gets only to see the moment of his death...man, fuck that!
And for all you non-believers out there, I would suggest you check out all the press that The Wire is getting...articles in Time, Rolling Stone, EW (and those are just the rags I get personally) plus raves in the Washington Post...hell, David Simon got a really kick-ass op-ed piece in the Post today (about the decline of the printed press, of course).
My best friend/best man at my wedding/ cult-rocker Paul K. told me two years ago that The Wire made The Sopranos almost irrlevant...entertaining, yes, but not socially relevant. There's more truth in one hour of the Wire's fiction than can be found on most network's entire fall lineup, especially the so-called "reality" series.
What's real? What's keeping it real? Check out HBO sundays at 9...better yet start with Season 1, episode 1 from Netflix or your local Blockbuster...and get on the bandwagon!
Hell, even my wife has gotten into it. Granted, she's only 8 episodes deep into season 1, but she's into it nonetheless. We've got plenty of time to watch TV now as....
We've had a baby boy! Miles Elliott, born January 4th. 8lbs, 3.3 oz / 21 1/4 inches "tall". Mother, Miles and the Colonel are all doing well, if sleep deprived. At least I now have all four seasons on DVD (thanks, Ebay!) to keep me occupied. The hardest part? Pausing the episode I'm watching that she hasn't seen yet (the last thing she saw last night before bed was the dinner party where we meet Clay Davis for the first time...you know...when his driver tells Cederic Daniels how much he could bank by boosting the art from the house where the party is held.
My Boy...Miles Elliott Smith. Who would have thunk it?

Loving it, best show on tv!
-
Yes shout out to my hood!I don't know where this season is going. Does Omar get payback? That's all I really want to know. Knowing the Wire Marlo might just get his revenge and it would just be business as usual in Charm City with Marlo reigning as king. Also did Wood Harris need the money? I thought he didn't want to be on the show anymore because he was dissatisfied with how the storylines played out.
-
Can't go wrong passing time with the Wire and your newest addition to the family!
-
Fairfax VA (to me) lies just beyond Alexandria off the Beltway. I pass thru it every day on my way from home (Waldorf MD) to work (Sterling VA...yes, you read that right...106 miles roundtrip every lovin' day...thank god for SIRIUS & 103.5 WTOP). Actually, Alexandira might be in Fairfax County...I really don't know. It's a pretty nice place, as long as you aren't an illegal immigrant. NOVA is starting to crack down pretty hard on 'em, which I understand, but damnitall if the latino restaurants don't kick the shit out of nearly every other "ethnic" eateries around. Shout out to Thai Seafood Grill here in Waldorf (last week the sight of a major "after hours party" bust), SADO Bros/Sterling Pizza in Sterling, VA (best steak & cheese around, and the "Peruvian-Style" charcoal roasted chicken is tops. Honorable mention to Henry's Soul Food Cafe in Oxen Hill for everything they make, plus the Sweet Potato Pie (if you wanted on for the holidays you had to pre-order it well in advance...you should have seen the people who were turned away...they were PISSED!).
It's great being able to watch the Wire with Miles on my lap...that's not something I'll be able to do in a few months. Imagine if he goes to pre-K and starts asking for points on the package (or worse), muthafuckas.
And on a sad, angry note, the AMC Hoffman 22...my favorite multiplex in the area...recently blocked off the free parking lots (2 of em...HUGE lots) and now we must PAY to PARK to see a movie or eat at the San Antonio Grill (best cheese enchilladas ever). Not a bad deal after 4 pm when it's only a dollar....but now it's $9 to PARK to see a matinee. Oopps...there went my business! I'd rather go to the Uptown, the AFI or the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse anyway...even if ACD does charge $2.75 for a 12oz soda (8ozs of ice). AFI serves beer & wine & Uptown has an apx. 40x70 curving cinerama-type screen (with red velvet curtains that open before the show).
If anyone is still with me, the Washington Post published a great op-ed piece by David Simon re: the decline of newsprint in America. It's online at the website. Also, in the Jan 14 issue of TIME there's a great piece on The Wire that should still be there.
Uh-Oh...someone's got Stinky Britches. Gotta run! See you all back here at 10:05 for the post-show recap... -

By the 7th episode, you really feel like the shit is hitting the
by razorback
Much to come... Omar returns like Vader going to Mustafar. Just wait.
-
This show can be funny as hell when it wants to be, and this stuff with McNulty this season has been fascinating so far.
-
It seems to me, McNulty's biggest addiction is to detective work itself. It's what he's best at, and it puts him apart from everyone else. Reading Simon's Homicide book, it seems that some of these people almost can't stop doing the job. But for Jimmy, the job is his excuse to do what he wants. The job both makes him and lets him drink. The late nights, the drinking, the living in his own little world. The fact that he's solving a murder makes his job more important than anything. What could be more important than solving a murder? He basically says this in this episode.
-
Fairfax is home to a number of cute girls looking for a "bad boy" to piss off their very affluent fathers. The roller coaster in the background..."Two Face". The Six Flags up 301 is heavily DC comics based. The "Superman" and "Batman" coasters are pretty sweet. They've got a Joker themed one, too, thats one of those linear induction, magnet driven ones. A little jerky, but niiice.
I wish they hadn't shown Butchie getting clocked in the head by Chris in last week's "next time on The Wire" preview...that kind of ruined that whole scene for me cuz' I knew what was coming. Fuck, when have Chris & Snoop ever left a breather (except, this time, to get word to Omar that he's been invited to a Royal Command Performance)? And I think Vondas & the Greek are gonna piss all over Marlo.
Regardless, I still don't want to know SHEEEEYATT about what comes next...I skiped this weeks-next week preview.
OH BOY IS THIS GREAT!!!!! -
He's a little wonder. My boy....(((sigh)))
-
by far!
-
That was a fucked up and sad scene with Butch. Most shows end on a big twist where you go "What the fuck? I can't wait to see the next episode.".
The Wire doesn't rely on twists. When I saw Omar's face at the end of tonights episode, I thought "Ohhhh Shit. I HAVE to see the next episode." Best.Show.Ever. -
The previews and previously on are 16:9 but the actual show isn't, am I the only one that has a problem with this? Anyone?
-
Joker's Jinx is the shit. I still haven't gotten to try Batwing. The line's always so long.
-
David Simon said they thought about switching to widescreen HD for the third season when everyone else was doing it, but they decided not to so that the whole series would be consistent. I can respect that.
-
Hello LA Customers, just wanted to let you guys know that the Wire episode 54 will be available On Demand at 12:01 AM....and for some by 12:30 AM.. Please be patient Herc, I'll make sure it's available by then.
-
Most people don't want to know anything, even your vague references, from episodes that aren't going to air for 3 weeks. If you want kudos and acknowlegment that you've seen through episode 7 and you're special...there, you've got it now. But this isn't some douchebag Heroes talkback, this is The Wire...we're supposed to be smart here. Don't ruin in it for the handful of people that come to the talkbalks to read about and discuss the current episode.
-
Just saw episode54......WOW! Nothing fucks with this show!!! Season looks like it's gonna be ill.
-
Just saw episode54......WOW! Nothing fucks with this show!!! Season looks like it's gonna be ill.
-
not to hijack this talkback, but its a pretty good show.
-
is that they can't find an English speaker easily given what the place is supposed to be. It hardly serves the locals!
Spoilers - I feel so sorry for Bunk. McNulty broke his heart on the wagon and is stomping on it now. And his face when Lester didn't react as expected!
-
First of all let me say, Holy Shit! I didnt see that ending coming a mile away. Fucking Marlo! But my question is: Who was that tied up and gagged person being delivered to Cheese by Chris and Snoop? Was it the guy with the glasses in the CO-OP? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
-
Sorry about my last post you all..but glad to see some more East Coast people on here. I guess now I will have to try out SADO brothers...I never been there..I live in WV, about an hour away from Sterling. I go to NOVA all the time (Sterling, Herndon, Reston, Fairfax and of course Tysons)...I used to work in both Herndon and Sterling on Holiday Park Drive...from 2000 to almost the end of 2003...But each time I go to NOVA I stop in to the Buffalo Wing Factory (the one in Sterling). I think it's on Church Road...Anyway saw your posts and I just had to respond...I cant wait for episode 4. It just sucks that DISH doesnt have HBO ON DEMAND
-
Yes, it was the guy who had the beef with Cheese in the co-op meeting.
-
Just saw episode54......WOW! Nothing fucks with this show!!! Season looks like it's gonna be ill.
-
It's just a little mom & pop place tucked in the back of Sterling Plaza (the "Safeway" strip mall, right beside the Laser Tag place). I've yet to have one bad meal outta that place.
-
this show is like crack, I can not get enough even when I can see an episode a week in advance. As good as this ep. was, next week looks crazier! I'm losing my mind and I'm gonna miss the hell out of this show.
-
I hope Cheese gets what he has coming to him. "You play in dirt, you get dirty."- McNulty
-
So why did the Greeks give Marlo the nod to do what he did. Was it because of what the old greek said - that Marlo's just going to keep coming back over and over again? Thoughts? Also, nice mirror image of what's happening with the top of the police leadership and the gang leadership.
-
One of the funniest lines in the show ever. Also episode 4 is insane.
-
I FUCKING HATE HATE HATE MARLO!!!!
Motherfucker I hope he gets his. I hope omar chops him to pieces. I seriously just had a fucking visceral emotional response to EP 4. I hate marlo. goddamn i hate him. -
I didn't spoil anything. When you see the episodes you can come back here and note how much you overreacted. Thanks.
-
nearly blew my mind. i love this show more than most things in life.
-
The scene with McNulty and Beadie was really really sad, as well. You know, you forget how well you know and care about these characters sometimes, and then theres a scene that breaks your heart. And you realize that it's like you're watching a family member throwing their life away. It had it good with Beadie. So sad.
-
I stopped reading after "scene with Beadie was sad"...you spoiler mother fucker dickwad. I hope you get some kind of eye disease, scumbag.
-
I just reread my post again, and am pretty sure that I don't know what you're talking about.
I can see what you think it says. But I assure you, I didn't spoil anything that you don't already know from the frist Ep of this season. Namely, McNulty is fucked up again, and he has a good woman at home who is suffering for it. -
Even knowing who lives or dies from episode to episode is a spoiler. And my post was also a warning and reminder to take it no further. My tone wasn't overreacting at all. Or "hyperbole". Look it up, do you even know what it means? What part of my post was "hyperbole"? When I called your original post a "vague reference"? Your follow up and condescending "Thanks" makes me wish I posted what I originally wanted to: you're a Douchebag. No hyperbole there either.
-
No, I don't know what you said, nor do I intend to read your post. And I take back that eye disease crack...you obviously are a pretty classy guy. It's just that I jock this show so much I don't even watch the "Next Week on the Wire" bits anymore. I guess I'm really pissed at HBO for the On Demand shenanigans. I'm a Direct TV guy, and to think they put that out there to try to get folks to drop satellite for Comcast (here in DC) is just reprehensible, dirty pool, etc. etc. Please, though, in the future, please don't even hint at what's to come. I don't like being mean, especially to such entertainment-savvy type folks like yourself...
-
Man oh man do I hope she gets the Oscar....let Cate have the best acterss, spread the Oscar ove around a little....and three cheers for Juno, too.
-
If you're telling the truth that is the most f'ed up thing I've seen on a message board ever.
-
I love the show and am following it pretty well but can someone explain (with SPOILER alert) exactly what is going on b/w Prop Joe/Omar/Greeks/Marlo? I've seen the first 4 episodes. I'm not exactly sure how everything led up to the exit of a main character.
-
Avon is not out of this picture, he can't be, he's the reason the show exists. I think someone called it before. Omar does some real damage, takes out Chris and Snoop but doesn't get to Marlo before getting taken out himself. Herc, however, via Levy, manages to get info to the squad, which gets Marlo into jail. Marlo, in jail, lasts a good hour without his muscle and Avon in his best of moods. It won't go down down like that at all, I'm sure, but damn if they aren't setting it up that way.
-
Just sayin. This show is hard enough for me to talk to other real world people as it is. Let's not detonate this talkback, which has been graciously granted us by Herc (who has to suffer daily, I'm sure, for sharing the name of the character I most want to throttle on the show). I'm trying to keep myself as free from knowing what's up as I can, like a lot of other people here, but I love talking the Wire. So, maybe, you know, play nice so we can enjoy this final season of the best show ever aired on television together? Yes? No? Maybe?

It's all good man. I'll be more careful. I guess I just assumed that most people are able to watch the On Demand for the following week at 12:01 am like me. Peace

Not even bright enough to have burnt out. Hyperbole is an exaggeration. Calling anything I said a spoiler is hyperbole. It is at worst a preview. Hell, it is not even that since nothing I said spoils anything... because it doesn't even happen.
-
Don't read this... *****Omar gets badly injured but goes on a rampage anyway... crippled, using a broom to support himself, he goes around destroying money, drugs, and Marlo's muscle like the Angel of Death.***** Now that is a spoiler.
-
Although there might be other connections as well, I caught an ep of FotC last night and laughed when I realized that Doug (of Mel & Doug fame) is none other than Thomas Klebanow, senior editor (?) of the Baltimore Sun[papers].

...get a talkback for the greatest show ever and godless attention seeking cretins ruin it with spoilers. Fucking clowns should be lined up and shot.

I want that Police van to reappear in the last episode. Valchek's one of my favorite television bastards ever.

This isn't a spoiler, so don't worry. There's a scene in a bar, and it's got a close up on Richard Belzer complaining about a bar tab. It's completely superfluous and not used again. This show is so real, that a little nod/in joke to Homicide RUINS it and takes you out of the realism, and the only time I've cringed. That works on something like Arrested Development, not here. That being said, Dominic West did direct it, so I guess if someone should fuck up, it should be the first time director, and the episode does contain a lot of wonderful stuff. Now, here is a question I have, that MAY BE A SPOILER, so look away. In episode 5 or 6, I can't recall which, when Carcetti is talking about the new Westport Harbour, and the one guy yells and insults him, was that Nikky Sobotka? I couldn't tell, but it looked like him, and the fact that he was talking about the port makes sense. It would jsut be really awesome if it was. Can anyone confirm/deny?
-
People are just building it up due to the ending. It's of course still a very good episode, but I think episode 6 or 7, was much more enjoyable, just due to how much more tense and convoluted everything is. Simon said he was only doing 10 episodes so each episode could be full of events and quality, and it absolutely has.
-
I'm in L.A. and THE WIRE 5:4 still hasn't shown up on my ON DEMAND! WTF?
-
Yeah, it was Nick Sobotka. Fucking fantastic.
