United Artists to Remake Nacho Vigalondo's TIMECRIMES!!! Now with Trailer!

Published at:  Jan 19, 2008 7:55:23 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I've spent my day at the Fangoria Convention here in Austin, Texas. There really isn't a ton of news debuting here, but what we do have is some cool ass guests that are partying the weekend away - and I love it. I spent a good deal of time today with Kane Hodder and Tom Savini chatting about all sorts of fun stuff - from TEETH to the badass CURSE OF THE DEMON mask I bought from Matt Geuther!!! Sorry Tom - Didn't know you wanted it.

Anyway - I get home and I have a couple emails pointing me to Variety - where they're reporting that Nacho Vigalondo - Spain's latest cinematic genius - has optioned the remake rights of his first feature, TIMECRIMES - which premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, where it was optioned by Magnolia Pictures for U.S. Distribution. Who picked up the remake rights? None other than Tom Cruise's UNITED ARTISTS - and apparently Steve Zaillian attached to produce.

Now TIMECRIMES was universally picked as the discovery of the year by all three Austin contributors to the AIN'T IT COOL AWARDS - (Quint, Massawyrm and Myself) but Quint and I decided to name other films so as not to be repetitive. I'm fascinated to see how TIMECRIMES plays at Sundance, but given this quick acquisition by UNITED ARTISTS - I'm betting it did damn fine.

Now - who on Earth will United Artists cast... I could see Tom Cruise in the role - but my real hope is that they go with Nacho to direct it - His direction was so sharp and on-target that to go with some other talent would be a real waste of opportunity. I'm sure Nacho has a lot of ideas for how to bring it to American screens... and besides - these Spanish directors... they seem to have a knack for kicking U.S. Audiences' collective asses!

    excellent flick

Also saw it at FF. It was worthy of being the jury winner. It's probably the most entertaining time travel film since 12 MONKEYS.

    subtitles

    by flyinhawaiian30

i enjoy movies with subtitles but they give me the false sense that i understand languages that i actually don't. i've seen Amelie so many times that i could have sworn i had learned french but tried it once without the subtitles and boom nothing..

    Remakes, remakes, fuckin' remakes!!

    by maxthesilent

That's it! I'm boycotting ALL remakes. I never want to see another one unless the original is made widely available by the studio whores who approve this crap. If not, then fuck the lot of them. I'm sick of it. Why is it that horror fans get fucked up the ass all the time? No respect, that's why. Worthless hack pieces of shit like Platinum Dunes who don't have the slightest clue what makes a good horror movie. Yep, I'm done. Never watching a remake again until I can see the original.

I'll be seeing TIMECRIMES at Sundance

    by badwaldo s revenge

...if I'm lucky to secure a seat in the wait list line (2-3 hours wait). I totally missed out on individual tickets, plus it cost 5 bucks more than wait list ticket. I'll report what I think of this interesting-sounding movie. L8r

    Good news, I suppose...

    by skinjob69

Just saw the premier of Timecrimes earlier this afternoon at sundance. It was fantastic. It had a complex plot involving the main character taking multiple, short trips back in time. Each trip is done with good intentions, but each one inadvertently creates more problems for him. Incredibly tight plot- with no glaring plot holes (as is often the case with stories involving time travel). I wasn't bothered in the least with the Spanish language/ English subtitles, and the effects were top notch. Don't really think it needs a remake, but if that results in more people seeing this story, it's a good thing. I think Nacho has some serious brains and film-making talent. I'm definitely going to watch this film again, and I'm really looking forward to his next project.

Loved that film! Seems`like almost nobody saw it, though, which is a shame. If Cloverfield is similar in some ways, I'm even more stoked to see it.

    Cuervo

    by headgeek

Last I heard, the movie didn't have distribution in Spain. It world premiered at FANTASTIC FEST and got picked up by Magnolia - Nacho was stunned that he got U.S. Distribution on a Spanish Language flick - Prior to acquisition in Spain or any other Spanish speaking country.

FUCK NO!!! STOP CRUISE FORM SHITTING ON THIS!

    by badmrwonka

remember Abre los Ojos? remember how great it was? and it got remade with a bunch of white people in English like 3 years later, called Vanilla Sky, and it sucked! why can't things just stay in their language, and be little gems?if you really have a hard-on for a movie, take the screenwriter and director, and let THEM make an English language film for their next project.fuck this, I will not see a remake that was greenlit BEFORE THE FILM WAS DISTRIBUTED THEATRICALLY IN ITS OWN COUNTRY. that is fucking bullshit.

Miracle Mile scared the feces out of me.

Why did all of the best "what-if" nuke movies have to come out in the 1980s, when I was a kid? Even the phony mushroom clouds in The Day After still give me the creeps.

    Not if it's Cruise

    by jeffv

The buzz sounded interesting. Sadly, I'm rarely in the mood to watch subtitled films. (It's not that I don't read, but if I wanted to read I'd read a book, not a movie.) An English version would definitely get my attention (it isn't available dubbed is it?), but I am so sick of Tom Cruise that I've been boycotting everything he's in (no matter how good it looks) in the vain hope that I can in some small way help make him disappear into obscurity.

    Not Tom Cruise

    by bingo the clown

If this is going to get remade, it needs to star someone who can play a character completely out of his depth, not Cruise's smarmy can-do attitude.
