STAR TREK teaser is online... via shady crappy looking YouTube... Perhaps Monday in HD!

Published at:  Jan 18, 2008 12:52:10 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Behold the nice, atmospheric, understated - but at the same time - grand in scope and vision... the construction of the Enterprise teaser trailer for the relaunch of STAR TREK. No matter what you think of the Enterprise being made on Earth... you can not deny that it looks cool. I suppose the Enterprise could take off from Earth at impulse power - but a ship can't achieve warp in an atmosphere (at least that's what we've been told, right?) Here's the teaser...

HARRY SOME THOUGHTS ON ENTERPRISE EARTH BUILD

    by deus vult

So did my subject line make it? if not, here's the jist of it: does it REALLY matter where the ship is built? QUICK ANSWER: NO.now, some talkbackers have mentioned that, according to their trek encyclopedias, the first enterprise was built piece by piece on earth, then the pieces were sent to some atmospheric station for full assembly. Harry does that make you feel better?all kidding aside, every great sci-fi ship was built on a planet; the falcon, the sdf-1, the ship HAL ran, and now clearly the enterprise.also, how do we know its actually being built on earth? maybe its inside of some orbital station? I didn't see any futuristic fast food drive-throughs in the background so who knows?and, honestly, is it really worth getting upset about? I've noticed a few people complaining about it, yes you harry are included, but hey, SO WHAT? does it REALLY matter? no in the end it doesn't. let's just be happy the movie doesn't include clones of picard or cigar-shaped ships angry there are no more whales on earth.now I'm asking for the last time...is it a lion or is it huge or both?

I'm not sure if the Bird of Prey went to warp in atmosphere - cuz I seem to remember that it was full impulse - and that Sulu said once they were clear of Earth Atmosphere - that they had hit Warp Factor something or another.

And as for the Enterprise in the original series being in an atmosphere... I just missed that episode.

    by falcon5768

The BoP was most certainly in Atmosphere when it warped out. Someone hunted down Gene's 1968 Making of Star Trek book (which contained in part much of the bible of the show as well) where he spelled out quite clearly the major parts of the ship where built on Earth and lifted off to orbit via some sort of anti-gravity sled. So the Enterprise was always intended to have been built on Earth, even by Gene. Considering Orci and company are not just fans of the show, but have read the decidedly non-canon books, it would make sense one of them at one time read Gene's autobiography of the making of the show to gleam out details

How is it going to take off? Are they going to strap big shuttle boosters to it's nacelles (I hope they fixed those O-Rings!)?
Enterprise is far to large to maneuver in an atmosphere, she's not aerodynamic, no anti grav (like voyager) and it just not equipped for flight within an atmosphere.

Ok, so I haven't seen it on the big screen and honestly I didn't see much of anything at all in that YouTube piece of crap but looking at the large image that was posted the other day I see that it's being built in "an atmosphere". Nowhere does it say that it's earth's atmosphere. Also did anyone notice the "under construction" line? For all we know this scene is some expensive advertising CGI and nothing more. Can anybody honestly say, hand on heart, that Mission Imossible III was a great film? It was like a TV movie...no sense of spectacle, rapid editing and confusing geography. Compare JJ's bridge attack scene with the one done by Cameron in True Lies, Cameron's is brilliantly shot and edited - result? It is tremendously exciting. JJ has no talent in his selection of shots and editing. This is typical pre-release PR bullshit. Crap trailer. Come back Nicholas Meyer, perhaps the only truly talented director (Robert Wise aside) the Trek film franchise ever had.

The teaser also goes against the book that says the enterprise was assembled in space...assuming the enterprise in the teaser was on Earth...look at it, does it look like it needs assembling? No...it's being fully built on Earth in the film, which goes against all canon.

Now I couldn't give a shit...I wanted to throw out canon and reboot with a Klingon War trilogy, but what pisses me off is that the overrated hacks, Abrams and Orci are essentially lying when they say they're sticking to canon...and I hate liars.

If you show me in a film or series where it says Enterprise was built in space then okay it's canon. I don't know or care. I'm a trek geek, but I'll put that in the uber geek category. Like I said in the other post if JJ starts screwing with character timelines, and changes that are documented in any series, then I'll be angry at him. By the way, I hate liars too, that's why I'm unemployed and looking for work, while the liars are still working.

But it will take them years just to figure out WHAT format to release it in. I wince at the ABC Network version.

Could the Enterprise be built in Space Dock?

    by ccchhhrrriiisssm

It certainly looks like this could be the case. Besides, the images of builders without space suits does not imply that it is built on Earth. They could have been working inside the ship, or behind a force field, et al... Anyway, GREAT TEASER! I am now officially excited -- and I am not really a Trekkie (only really liked Wrath of Khan, even though First Contact and Undiscovered Country were decent).

    by saluki

Well beyond anything on TV, and I've seen plenty of Spooks & 24. Why MI:3 gets so much shit, when MI:2 is the true black sheep, surprises me. MI:1 takes some getting used to, but it has it's own appeal. Thumbs up on the teaser, but I also think it being built in space is just all-around cooler (and somehow makes more sense).

    by arcadiands

Roddenberry published a 'writer's bible' for anyone intent on submitting potential scripts to himself or DesiLu Productions. In that bible, he states specifically that 'our ship was built in space, and has never known the gravity of any planet' or words to that effect. I'm sure you can google for a word-for-word quote, but I'm confident that I'm within 90 to 95 percent accuracy.
So if you want to discuss what is and what is not actually canon, I think when Gene Roddenberry specifically states that the Enterprise was built in space and not on any planet, well I kinda think Gene Roddenberry is the actual FONT of all things Star Trek Canon - wouldn't you?

    by deus vult

and as harry, mori, whoever will confirm, the goal of any teaser trailer is to GET PEOPLE TALKING and lo! it is so. EVERYONE is officially talking about this trailer, save anderson cooper of course.although oddly enough I read a review of cloverfield in the weekly standardnow someone above said the enterprise is too large to manuever in an atmosphere. hmmm...not sure about that one, considering according to the chart on wikipedia its roughly the size of an aircraft carrier. and if memory serves the sdf-1 was a mile long and yet took from macross island just fine. until it accidentally folded and took all of the island with it into deep space. uh hmm...looks like I shot myself in the foot with that one. nevertheless, the trailer's got all of geekdom, from austin to austria, talking about this movie, and it doesn't come out for a year. so congrats abrams, you've done it again.

I am still waiting for my refund from Paramount Studios! But I do have respect for JJ Abrams' mind, along with Roberto Orci. There is quite a bit of potential here, and I don't think that they would ruin it for any but the most closed-minded Trekkie (who wouldn't be happy if Roddenberry's overrated corpse were to rise from the dead and write the script).

Here's the god damned dialogue from the movie:

SCOTTY Admiral! There be whales here!

    THE BRIDGE (INTERCUT)

KIRK: Well done, Mr. Scott. How soon can we be ready for warp speed?

    SCOTTY: I'll have to re-energize.

KIRK: Don't take too long. We're sitting ducks for their radar systems... Mr. Sulu, impulse climb.

BIRD OF PREY - as she begins to climb with moderate speed to altitude.

    BRIDGE

UHURA: Unidentified aircraft, 40,000 feet MSL, range 30 miles, bearing 010.
KIRK: Mr. Scott -- how soon?
SCOTTY: Stand by, sir. Miracle worker at work...
KIRK: Mr. Scott, don't make jokes, we are in danger of -

    SCOTTY: Full power, sir.

KIRK: Mr. Sulu, if you please.

    SULU: Aye, sir, warp speed!

And then the BoP zooms off, heading for the sun. Sounds like to me the order was given and carried out in the Earth's atmosphere...

    Enterprise..

    by ceejaynightwing

Looks to me like it was simply being assembled in space, not built from scratch. That would satisfy all the nitpickers and hopefully if that is the case, not fall prey to the Enterprise TV show's nasty habit of being totally inconsistent with pre-established history. Christopher Pike is in the film so it would more likely be a scene of the Enterprise being refitted if in the film at all. My worry is the half-assed casting in the movie for some of the lead roles, Simon Pegg as Scotty? Paul McGillion not only looks like Scotty but IS Scottish! Enough with the fanboy selections and at least get the initial casting done decently so the film can have a chance as a serious production and not a spoof!

Guys, I think the bad quality is because somebody camcorded this off of a screen today in a show of Cloverfield and matted the frames. I don't think it's any reflection on Bad Robot, and I'm betting they planned on you seeing all this on the big screen, before anywhere else. Seems to me, it's meant to be a public statement that JJ has his genre house in order, and to trust him a bit. Besides, the big screen, given the history and prestige of the franchise, is the appropriate place to premier the trailer.

I can understand how components would be assembled on Earth, then lifted into orbit for final assembly. Not much os a stretch there, really. What IS pushing believability is that you'd still have conventional "dirty" welding techniques in use by the 22nd century. I doubt you could create a standard weld with the "advanced" materials that would be in use to build the old-E we came to know and love. No, the whole "welding" idea is for the birds, JJ. Let's hope it was just a ploy used exclusively for the trailer.

But just because someone like a Joe Quesada (as Editor in Chief at Marvel) or a JJ Abrams (as an independent movie producer) has the POWER to make the decisions about changing a much-beloved franchise......Doesn't mean they are making the RIGHT decisions. In fact, let's be honest and have a little REALITY check here. A little bucket of cold water thrown into the face. History in both movies and comics has long since proven and shown that usually -- accent on usually -- that most "changes in a much-beloved franchise" were actually made with a financial bottom line in mind (ie. a gimmicky sales hook to boost revenue) and NOT a true artistic purpose or goal.

I hate it when teasers with a "big reveal" like this one feature the logos of the production companies at the beginning. This trailer would have been WAY more effective if they didn't give away what movie it was by showing the Paramount/Bad Robot logos. Immediately, we know what the welder is working on. A much better tactic would have been to show workers working on "something", and we don't realize what it is until the VERY end. Spock's voice-over also occurs too early in the teaser, again ruining the "surprise".

    by cuttr

OK, I haven't read the talkbacks because I'm pressed for time, so this may have been discussed, but...
The rationale for building in space is because it takes a great deal of effort and energy to lift stuff into orbit. So, assuming the development of a propulsion technology that eliminates this concern, and also assuming that we're (relatively) early in our ability to source raw materials off-planet, building the Enterprise on Earth makes some sense. Maybe they used recycled materials or something.

    Very cool, very nicely rebooted

    by dreamfasting

To me, what resonated about Star Trek was not the space race part but rather the idea that the cold war would not be the end of the world, that today's tensions in our crowded little world today are just a passing thing in the grand scope of time and space. It would have been nice to hear a couple of idealistic quotes from the social side of US culture in there too - like a Martin Luther King snippet. As it stands now, there's just a nagging little hint of "NASA propaganda video" vibe. Otherwise, very cool - very much in the good taste of the franchise reboots that seem to be popular these days.

As you can see by the response here Star Trek is anything but dead! People are clamoring for it. Last time ST was gone for 10 years. People had moved on with Star Wars and other things and would say " Well I like the reruns but it's so dead and I can't imagine it coming back ". Well it came back stronger than ever! ST is a timeless format for telling SF stories that people want to see. If handled correctly it can be very popular and inovative. Given that B & B are gone now and have nothing to do with this I have a feeling it will come out swinging again. Get used to it!

    INSURRECTION > THE FINAL FRONTIER

    by bringingsexyback

Why people are aching for a Shat appearance is beyond me. Look at the man. The moment he's onscreen the magic of Star Trek is gone. He's a caricature now. He was great as Kirk circa ST 1 to 6 (excl. 5) but that was a different person. And the fact he directed 5 just solidifies the fact that he lucked out with good directors (Meyers, Nimoy) and good scripts (that he wasn't involved with).

The only real problem I see with this is old timers ( and yes I'm and old timer since 1966 ) not being able to have an open mind and let something new and fresh come in. My mind is open and I'm willing to see what the new movie has got.

    by ccchhhrrriiisssm

...but to me, it reeks of cheesy "B" movie sci fi. Why all of this adoration for Roddenberry? From all that I have heard, he was generally hated in Hollywood. His "Trek" contributions were initial and then, uh, very limited. The most important figure since the films has been Leonard Nimoy. He has had more say into the story, direction and canon of Trek than Roddenberry EVER enjoyed. If Nimoy is placing his stamp of approval on this project, then I have a good feeling about this.

    IGNORING 40-YEAR-OLD CANON!!!!

    by mpd1958

I cannot abide this absolute thumb-in-the-eye of well established Star Trek Canon. Someone needs to force the film-makers to at least read "The Making of Star Trek" by Stephen Whitfield and GENE RODENBERRY! It's only been around since 1968! It contains Rodenberry's "Star Trek Bible" for its series' writers, which says, "The unit components were built at the Star Fleet Division of what is still called the San Francisco Navy Yards, and the vehicle was assembled in space. The Enterprise is not designed to enter the atmosphere of a planet, and never lands on a planet surface." This is from the horses' mouth! It wasn't built at fucking Area 51, and it didn't fucking blast of from Earth! If they ignore this, they'll ignore anything!

I make no apologies about loving every Start Trek movie. Every goddamned one, including insurrection and nemesis. It is the single greatest body of popular science fiction to date. Star Wars is NOT science fiction, it's fantasy. So even though it's like comparing apples and oranges, ST is better than SW, and better than you, and this will be fantastic. Real Deal's comments

    by mpd1958

Real Deal, I think one of the big problems of virtually every Trek movie after "Wrath of Khan" is that they were not true enough to TOS. The most courageous thing this movie could do is to take us back to the colors, styles, look and feel of TOS. I'm talking mini-skirts, heavy mascara, and beehive hairdos; I'm talking the ORIGINAL bridge of the Enterprise- as Scotty says in the Next Generation episode "Relics", "No bloody A, B, C, or D!" Face it- the appeal of Star Trek is its mythos, its history. The fans love it classic style, not the bastardized weak-sister form it's been in since The Next Generation aired. Give me the classic Grant Jeffries design for once on the big screen, and DON'T REWRITE HISTORY!

Thanks for bringing that image back to my mind, I thought I was finally done with the nightmares. I saw the teaser at the theater today, it isn't really clear that they are on a planet surface. It could be inside a big space dock. And no it isn't really important if it was built on earth or in space. The problem is if it is earth they are ignoring the fans. Sticking to established ST canon is that hard but ignoring it like Enterprise did just shows lazy writing and producers with no real love of the show.

Well. I feel just the oposite. I feel that during and after " The Wraith Of Khan " it was more like the TV series than ever. However it couldn't have been just like the old series because the characters ( along with the actors ) were older. And one thing I can tell you about being older ( I'm 54 now ) is that things aren't exactly the same. Time marches on. As for the rest. Sorry about you being stuck. But this sort of thing came up when they reimagined BSG. They happened to get past that and made a very good show despite the stuck in their ways old fans. In this universe there's room for both. The old show isn't going anywhere it's just been told in that style to death. Time to do a different take. Have an open mind. That's the way I picture most ST fans.

By the way, the whole concept of a spacecraft that was never meant or designed to land on a planet's surface was a fairly new one when Star Trek TOS came out. It was a concept later used in the design of the "Discovery" in 2001, and later by Star Wars' designs for a lot of its ships, including Imperial Star Destroyers and Rebel Blockade Runners. They are two large to land on a planet, and are not aerodynamic. NONE of the forms of Enterprise could land on earth, although the saucer sections could detach and land in an emergency.

And another thing. TOS was built around the current events of the late 60's. In order to be as ground breaking as that show was they have to do some adjusting to make it fit the 21rst century. We don't just have the Russians ( Klingons ) and the Chinese ( the Romulans ). And the whole focus of current events is different. In order to be relevant like the old series some changes have to be made. This is what made the old show great.

    assembled vs. built

    by staldo

I don't get this argument about where the damn ship was/should be built. My Legos were presumably created in China somewhere, and then assembled by me into a castle. Who built the castle? the plastic mold operators in China who created the components, or me? So the thing was "built" in space. There could be a dude arc welding a component, or even assisting with a "test assembly" on earth to make sure all the life support components worked before disassembly Here's a solution:each component individually transforms into a giant robot lion, which then jets into space under its own power, and combines with the other lions to form the enterprise, with Kirk yelling out the components as they are formed. Everybody happy? thought so.

Pertinent points all. Can't really disagree with your statements but I'm still hyped. It feels good to get behind a Trek film again (the last couple of years and several of the offshoot shows - I just ignored them). I'd be only too glad to see Star Trek become an event for more than the in-crowd (and having said that - let me say that I care that they're building the bloody Enterprise on land - WTF? - I'm hoping this is a Trailer-move designed to avoid confusion amongst newbs "why are they building it in space, do they build spaceships in space - huh - I am confused?" etc). Anyhoo, come opening day I'll be there and I'll be willing to give the new Trek a good shot, if Abrams f**ks up I'll bitch and moan with the best of us but I'll still continue to hope that someone picks up the Trek mantle and keeps it running because it's just too good a concept to keep down. Hasn't that 60's look and design for the Original Series been "reaffirmed" as canon by episodes of Next Generation (Relica) and Deep Space Nine (Trial and Tribbelations)? Surely they can't ignore that as well?

Well see that's where we differ. I've already seen what they could do with the old form. They've been redoing the FX on the old show to correct what looks so bad now it detracts from the rest of the show. And doing a damn good job of it to! However trying to copy what's come before in a bigger newer form isn't original. It's already been done. Also there's the reasons I've already listed. TOS was a product of it's time. Closely locked into current events. Even that book you sited states that again and again. Time for a product of these times. And as much as I have a nostalgic fondness for the old Battlestar Galatica it's really pale in comaparison to the types of stories ( and FX ) they've been able to do in the reimagined version.

    Landing absolutely possible!!!

    by betasword

Oh, man, don't you guys get it?
OK, here's reasoning why the Enterprise is easily capable to land: AG, short for AntiGravity.
Well as we all know, every StarTrek's Enterprises is able to have Gravitation(that's the reason, why all the Characters don't fly through the Ship)
and if you use it countered(upside-down), it should also be able to lift a ship, or to decrease it's wheight to a point, where even the manoeuvring-Thrusters should be enough to lift the ship.

As it goes for Warping in an Athmosphere, well, it might damage it, so it's only used in emergency-situations, i think.
As far as i know, it was prohibited in B5 to use the Hyperdrive in an Athmosphere, as it might ignite it.

its a teaser so i wasnt expecting much, it was well done...i like jj abrahms for lost and for cloverfield, but to call M:I3 the best of the series is crazy....it was a mess from beginning to end, really hard to watch.....as for the enterprise being too heavy to be in an atmosphere, in the original series it was inside the atmosphere when it beamed that pilot out of his jet...the bird of prey from star trek 3 and 4 was roughly the same size as the enterprise and it landed and took off effortlessly, and voyager routinely took off and landed, and in the finale when the had the ship fly through the san francisco sky while fireworks went off....but until i actually see it being built on the ground, meaning actually see the ground ill hold my opinion on that...if it is being built on ground in sections, whats to say that the saucer isnt seperate from the engineering section and the nacelles at that point in the trailer...im just glad everyone got off the "turbine" comments.....dont like the fact that its a kirk-centric prequel, but ill keep an open mind on it..

Also, his shit doesn't have a SHRED of believability behind it...which the best Sci-Fi/Fantasy does.

And now this Bastardization of what is without a doubt the most adored and copied Sci-Fi story of all time.

"Turbines", planet Earth and other whiney-assed complaints

    by drfyzziks

    Jesus H. Christ ...

Kids, it's a damn trailer. Not only that, but it's a conceptual trailer that isn't showing us a damn single scene from the actual movie. Its whole purpose is to instill a sense of awe and wonder - as in "humanity gets its shit together and builds something as noble and kickass as a starship!".

Now, as for the "turbines". They're obviously not turbines. They're the bussard collectors, which happen to work via magnetic fields. And if you've taken any kind of basic physics course, you'd know all about the Ampere-Maxwell law (basically, a changing electric field induces a magnetic field, and a moving magnetic field can induce current flow) ... so any sort of bigass motherfucking magnets (like those in a bussard collector) might just look like a motherfucking turbine - but I guarantee you that they don't suck in air and jet-propel the ship through the sky. Since my physics degree only covers advances up to the early 21st century, I'm willing to give the movie the benefit of the doubt ... and so should you.

With regards to the whole "built on Earth" thing - OK, so we have some people saying "No! The show's bible says it never lands and can't enter the atmosphere!" ... and we have other people saying "Well according to such and such tech manual, parts were assembled on the ground, blah blah" ... well here's a 3rd one for you: There was a TOS Trek novel called "A Flag Full of Stars" which covered part of the period between the end of the Enterprise's first mission, and the 1st movie. In it, the Enterprise is undergoing a refit, and the saucer section is being essentially rebuilt, on the ground, just outside of San Francisco ... yeah, yeah it's not "canon".... but whatever.

Like I said: I think the trailer is just there to get people talking. We won't see a single scene from it in the actual movie. It's entirely conceptual. Enjoy it for what it is and nothing mroe.

Warp Drive can be initiated in the atmosphere

    by uss cygnus

It is generally frowned upon in a solar system or near a planet, because of the orbital "traffic" that is near an inhabited planet. Other spacecraft, satelites and such. You don't want to engage warp drive and hit the 24th century equivalent of the Hubble telescope. Also, you don't want to risk engaging warp drive in a solar system, as the FTL speeds involved make it an extremely delicate thing to do in a crowded solar system such as ours with the asteroid belt in between Mars and Jupiter. Starships have navigational deflectors, yes, but they are not foolproof at close quarters. Bottom line, you can do it in an atmospheric environment or near planetary or inside a solar system at your own peril. Starfleet policy says it's Possible, but not reccomended only in cases of extreme emergency. This is citing multiple examples from the various "canon" series and films.

I AGREE. IN FACT, IN ONE OF THE BEST TREK NOVELS (PRIME DIRECTIVE) THEY MAKE GREAT USE OF THE IDEA THAT A STARSHIP IS PROHIBITED FROM AND HAS NEVER ENGAGED WARP IN THE GRAVITATIONAL WELL OF A PLANTE BECAUSE THE PREDICTIONS OF THE EFFECTS WERE INTRACTABLE WITH KNOWN PHYSICS. Like the fear that the first atomic bomb test could inadvertently trigger the incineration of the atmosphere.

This is already much more interesting to me than any of the previous Trek flicks were. Star Trek has been a bore for years, all pointless technobable and regurgitated weak plotting. Dull, dull, dull.

It turned into an afternoon soap with a handful of weird looking folks, yawn. Fingers crossed they don't give a shit about continuity and just focus entirely on making a bloody fantastic movie.

There's been no tangible sense of reality for the longest time. It's been way too plastic, both the sets and the direction.

It's time it had an edge that could cut, maybe then I'd actually give a shit and become engaged by the thing. As for the physics!??? WHO REALLY GIVES A RATS ASS? A physics text book does not make for an interesting story, it's unnecessary and IT'S DULL!

Funny, despite all the claims that the script review wasn't real... maybe it's true the ship is being built in Area 51, or right next door at 52. Nimoy's voices sounded ancient, like he's got dentures, but it's a good trailer and will look like a big motion picture unlike Berman's travesties. Still, it's hard for me to get excited about anything that is Star Trek. At least we will have the Indy trailer on Valentine's Day.

The problem with a city like Manhattan is that your routes are completely limited to a relative handful of accessways and, combined with the sheer numbers of people, you can forget about going anywhere fast. The sheer conjestion of pannicky people will preven you from doing anything but walking, bike or no. Honestly, there are just too many factors to dictate what you should or shouldn't do. Such escape plans like boat theft, bridge v. tunnel and which bridge to take, are completely dependent upon weather, conjestion of people, and said monster, that your best shot might actually be to stick it out.

I think Clovercrab's next destination would most likely be Elizabeth NJ where all the chemical plants are. He strikes me that he'd like a fix of the pollution like the Smog Monster. Then maybe go down to the shore for some sun and fun. I think your best bet is to stay away from the west side as he'd stomp all over it.

The Enterprise has always been the star

    by mpd1958

You young fans need to realize that, in Rodenberry's mind, the Enterprise was always the real star of Star Trek. That is why he put so much thought into its design, look, specifications, and history. Why else would he have imagined two prior captains before the time his series was set? One of them, Captain April, was never even mentioned or shown in TOS, but Rodenberry felt it was imortant to make him part of the ship's history in the minds of his writers. Rodenberry said, and it has been accepted for 40 years, that the Enterprise was built in orbit. You don't screw around for no reason with something that is so central to a myth- it is like a "re-boot" of Superman where C;ark Kent is born on Earth instead of Krypton!!!

Although, I'm not sure how involved J.J. is on Lost. He's a co-created and he's directed a couple of episodes but is it really his show? Other than Lost I'm actually pretty unfamiliar with his work. I tried to watch Alias once but I couldn't really get into it, and while MI3 was the best of the series, I thought the first two sucked so he had a very low hurdle. All in all, I don't think J.J. has yet to really knock one out of the park.

Yeah, I get a lot of flak for hanging on to my beloved 17, but I ALWAYS prefer the route of reliability when it comes to my weapons, tools, and equipment. While I do agree that a 9mm round doesnt have the stopping power of the higher calibers, the Glock 22 and 37 do have some issues. In my opinion, the most reliable model of the most reliable pistol is the glock 17. On a side note, you should have seen the amount of hair I pulled out when dealing with my M-16 back in the mid 80s. I'm still pissed about it...

    Enterprise

    by rumplewho

The USS Constitution - NCC-1700 built in 2241, never put into service. Once the design had been proven, the Enterprise was the first of 11 built. NCC-1701 was completed in 2245. It was built on Earth, in the San Fran ShipYard. It then flew into orbit under its own power, using Impulse, at which point the Anti-Matter Engines were installed. Just to clear things up, yes, the Enterprise is quite capable of going into the atmosphere, stationing itself a few hundred feet over an area, then putting itself back into orbit. Why did'nt they ever do that? 1) the anti-gravity fields would probably do a number on anything underneath it. 2) the anti-matter core on the ship has enough energy to vaporize an M-Class planet. 3) they have transporters and shuttle-craft.

anything over than 10 rounds is considered high capacity and thus, illegal in the state of NY. You can, of course, modify the magazine or, in my case, get a few magazines that were made before the ban, before 1994, but as I understand it, your sidearm is still considered illegal in NYC, ban or no. Ok I'm not a kid ( born on May 10 1953 ). You made me go into my liberary and pull out that old book! " The Making Of Star Trek " " What It Is - How It Happened - How It Works "

By Stephen E. Whitfield . Gene Roddenberry
    Copyright 1968
    I quote from page 171 :
" The unit components were built at the Star Fleet Division of what is still called the San Francisco Navey Yards, and the vessel was assembled in space. The Enterprise is not designed to enter the atmosphere of a planet and never lands on a planet surface. "

So that should clarify and settle the matter. No it's not supposed to enter a planet atmosphere ( although we did see this in the episode " Tommorrow Is Yesterday " which by the way got a really great makeover by CBS digital for ST remastered ) however the components were made on the surface and assembled in space. What we see in the trailer appears to be components being made. So until we see it fly up into orbit it doesn't interfere with your continuity. And even so this is a reimagining.

    by geekgasm

Okay, two things: you're very geekily quoting from The Making of Star Trek, "The unit components were built at the Star Fleet Division of what is still called the San Francisco Navey Yards, and the vessel was assembled in space." Look at that trailer - you've got the saucer, you've got the nacelles behind it, in the same position they're always in (with their big jet turbines), obviously supported by something that's probably the pylons - the damn things already assembled and its on the fucking ground! That's not "component units", its the whole fucking ship! With fucking spot welders, cranes, scaffolding, and if you look hard enough, probably a blacksmith with a hammer and anvil, a horse and buggy, and somebody shoveling coal. Which brings me to the other thing - I don't give a shit if its canon or not; it looks FUCKING STUPID! Like Abrams and Orci and their ilk are building the motherfucking Love Boat. All that bullshit Orci is spouting on that circle jerk TrekMovie site about "oh its a metaphor for building our future and its literally and metaphorically grounding Star Trek in our future" - bullshit! And totally gay on top of the bullshit! Show some damn futuristic shit and not some grimey UAW grunt with a spot welder! Its so ridiculous that they're turning their noses up at the original show's 60s retro future at the same time they're embracing the motherfucknig building of the Titanic! And you KNOW what happened to the fucking Titanic! It went DOWN, just like Anthony Pascale goes down on JJ Abrams!

It is so clearly stylized that I believe it is not meant to be taken literally. I hope Abrams can make a Star Trek film that is better than "Wrath of Khan" (which, is considered to be the "Empire Strikes Back" of the Star Trek films and I agree), but I think Abrams is overrated. Yes, he has some nice ideas, but I don't think they are well executed. I will see Cloverfield tomorrow, because I love monster movies, but I'm not expecting to be blown away. Anyway, we shall see if the new Star Trek film "re-energizes" the franchise. I will say that I think it's cool Quinto is a younger Spock and Nimoy is also in the film.

Keep telling yourself that. According to Roberto, they had long discussions about "how the warp engines have to be built in the gravity well of a planet to be balanced", I kid you not. So that's a lot of geeky brain power wasted on somethnig that's supposed to be "only a metaphor". Read what he said. And AGAIN, I don't give a fuck about "canon" or not. It's the stupid details that differentiate Trek from something like Space AOB and BSG, and I LOVE that stuff... gritty 21st century-projected-into-space sci-fi. I just don't think you need to do that to Trek to make it 'hip' or whatever. Trek was always about imagining the 'gritty reality' of an idealized future. I look at the design of the original Trek and I see a prototype for the future right down to flip phones and car dashboards. If TOS had just been typical 50s-60s lowbrow cheese our culture would be poorer for it today.

You know what made Space: AOB?

    by grammaton cleric binks

    R. Lee Ermey in the first episode training marines. A PG version of a futuristic Hartman. The Wild Cards only made it so far because of Hartman.

You enjoy making a lot of meaningless noise don't you? The only reason I quoted that book is because mpd1958 was using it first!
I'm sorry you guys can't get past your preceived ideas about this but some people just stop growing at certain times in their lives.

    Real Deal and Biter

    by geekgasm

RD: Yeah, quoting other people quoting a 40 year old book about Star Trek, that's real deep emotional growth. I don't give a fuck about the fucking 'canon'. Building that hulk on earth is STUPID and that trailer is BORING. Canon, schmanon. Moving on ...

Biter: Oh no, I got your point. You don't seem willing to wrap your brain around mine, i.e. there's no reason for such a widely-perceived wunderkind like Mr. Abrams - with his 'aw shucks, i'm just a geek like you guys' attitude and his 'gosh. my TV shows sure start to blow after one season' - not to be able to pull off both tricks at once, instead of your glass half full, glass half empty paradigm. People who like the details will be happy and people who don't know the details won't know the difference. Can. You. Understand. Me. Now? I doubt it.

Apparently for all your " Smarts " your reading retention is't so great. Like I said the other guy used that book first so you have to include him in your tirade. As for what Mr' Abrams can do " Cloverfield " is doing quite well at the box office but I guess you're too busy being full of yourself to notice. Stop now please. You're starting to sound like a troll.

Canon is called "canon" for a reason

    by mpd1958

For all you idiots who think that Star Trek Canon doesn't matter, you don't even understand Star Trek at all. Star Trek is a fully-realized universe, with all its own rules, traditions, and histories. The Enterprise is an ICON of science fiction, as is its imagined history. If you want to ignore all that, go ahead, BUT DON'T CALL IT STAR TREK!!!!

As a non-Trekkie and super casual viewer I must say...

    by gibsonusa

    Leonard Nimoy kicks ass.
    He cannot be replaced.

When this trailer appeared before Cloverfield (in front of a packed house of teens and college kids)...it was total indifference...as if it was just another Star Trek movie. Actually I think a lot of people were confused, as they used those historical lines from real history, then show a spaceship and a logo. I highly doubt it will stay in peoples memories.

As far as Star Trek canon, rules, and such goes, I suggest you go to YouTube and search "Star Trek movie mistakes". I like Star Trek too, but it plays fast and loose with its "rules, traditions, and histories". I'm seriously hoping the people making this movie purge the Rick Berman faggotry that spoiled modern Star Trek in all its forms (just think of Wesley Crusher as a giant metaphor for what that fucker has wroth).

    It's funny

    by bizarrojerry

how everybody seems to know the exact plotline of this movie, when we've really heard nothing beyond some rumors here and there. We don't really know anything. Anything we know officially doesn't really contradict much in the way of "canon" as far as I can tell. The ship built in orbit? Nothing very definitive about that. Kirk and Spock shouldn't know each other in the Academy? Some semi-official sources place say their four year terms there overlapped. Someone complained that Kirk would be taking command right out of the Academy, which we in fact have no official word on. Just wait and complain when you actually KNOW something, everybody.

    by jonny_boba

im starting to worry about this film a lot. Its just not gunna be the same with a bunch of young actors playing roles that we associated so feverishly with the original cast plus the enterprise is never gunna look as good as 1701 A

    Just occurred to me...

    by zaphodbeeblerox

The whole idea of the images of the Enterprise being built dovetails with the current tagline that we're seeing everywhere of "Under Construction" and may just be mean to indicate that there is a new Trek being made, but that what we're seeing may not be anything shot for the film.
