Green Lantern, Wonder Woman & J’onn J’onzz Grounded!! George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE Production Delayed By Strike!!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2008 9:37:16 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Citing script problems that couldn’t be remedied during the writers guild strike, Warner Bros. has decided to let its options lapse on the cast for George Miller’s upcoming “Justice League” movie.

The project will now have to wait until the AMPTP and/or Warner Bros. make deals with the writers, actors and directors guilds. The latter two unions see their agreements with the studios come up for renewal this summer.

Those said to have been cast but now may or may not be available once production commences include:

Adam Brody (Wally West), who turns 29 in December;
Scott Porter (Clark Kent), who turns 29 in July;
Lonnie “Common” Lynn (John Stewart), who turns 36 in March;
Megan Gale (Diana of Themyscira), who turns 32 in August.

Many in talkback will be thrilled that that such young actors may not play these iconic DC superheroes.

But. Look at the ages of other actors when they played their superhero roles:

Christopher Reeve, 24 in 1976;
Lynda Carter, 24 in 1975;
Christian Bale, 29 in 2003;
Brandon Routh, 25 in 2004.

    Thank you! I don't mind the cast, but at least this way they'll wait for a story that's good. (New Frontier wouldn't be bad, but Warner's would probably insist it be updated to modern times and that would rip the heart out of it.)

    Talent does. Reeves was a talented fucking actor who was hungry for the part and took the role dead seriously. He even went so far as to work out with Darth Vader himself in order to beef up enough to fill the tights. by jobacca

    I retract my earlier statement. Superman Returns was a fucking joke due to the story and the age of the actors. Supes and Lois had met,fell in love,Lois had given birth to a child who was 5 years old,and Supes had flown back to Krypton. It was a story about characters who had a past and a history together and neither ROuth nor Bosworth looked old enough to drink. Kate Bosworth was what,23 in human years when that film was shot? And since she's a Hollywood actress that means she actually looked 12. Did anybody buy her as an award winning reporter AND the mother of a 5 year old? That movie would have been good if that had actually cast ADULTS in the lead roles. Same with the MIA JLA.

    Hallelujah!!!!! It's for the best. Do this as a motion capture film with a great voice cast, including Kevin Conroy or Bale as Bats.One big problem at TimeWarner is the elitism of the movie division. They dictate what characters can appear where on TV and in movies, but will not hire on-staff writers who work in other divisions. With Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and scores others on staff working on animated shows, DVDs, comics, Smallville, major movies for the "New Line" division, etc., they still insist on hiring freelancers or people who worked on movies for the other major media corporations. Can a major stockholder (since that is all they listen too) please tell these idiots to hire IN-HOUSE!!-----later-----m

    She was one of the only things I couldn't stand about SR. She was terribly miscast in that role.

    Let's face it. I know we're going for a different universe here, but Porter doesn't even look like a Superman. Why not go for Nic Cage all over again? Brody is famous because of an over-rated televsion show made famous by teenage girls. Being on a popular FOX show doesn't mean you can act. Ask the cast of 90210.

    Bale was already 30 when they started filming Begins, but age alone isn't the issue. It's the credibility, experience, and frankly the talent, or lack there of, of these "actors" that irked people. Plus the George Miller making this film is not the Mad Max Miller anymore, it's the Babe and Happy Feet George Miller. Babe was at least a good kids movie, but Happy Feet was awful.

    by count magpyre

    Age (and apparent age) is pretty important for most of these roles. It's the difference between Stuart Townsend or Viggo Mortensen playing Aragorn...for the leader, you want someone with presence and gravitas and Scott Porter just doesnt have it. Chris Reeves might have been 24 at the time he first played Superman, but he looked like a man and that's what kids want to see when they go to this movie. When I was a kid, I never wanted to be Luke Skywalker or Robin when I played, I wanted to be Han Solo and Batman. Superman should be someone like Tim Daly (he did the voice in the cartoons, Jamie Bamber, or Jim Caviezel. And for Batman, I wouldn't mind seeing Thomas Gibson (watch him on Criminal Minds...that's Batman)

    We have already seen a man run faster than a speeding bullet; we have already seen variously colored lasers and energy beams come out of every object imaginable; we have already seen countless people fly; we have already seen mutants, talking animals, eye shadow masks, hairstyles that defy tornados, and alter-ego costumes that miraculously, MIRACULOUSLY hide underneath everyday clothes. It's what age you can PLAY, not what age you are

    by theseeker7

    It's all about perception. I mean like for Bale (which, BB was in 2005, not 2003) if you would've told me he was only 29 at that time I would've said you were full of shit. He plays as definitely a few years older onscreen, I had no problem with him as Bruce/Batman.

    But someone like Kate Bosworth on the other hand, she plays right along with what her age really is, early 20's. She was WAAAAAY too young looking to play Lois Lane. Lois Lane should be a WOMAN. But Routh at only 24, I didn't know that, I thought he played older than that (whereas, again, someone like Josh Hartnett would've been a terrible choice. He actualy looks his young age, not to mention of course also being an awful actor)

    Age-wise, none of them were too young. Look-wise, Adam Brody looks about 12. Scott Porter I was actually kind of excited about because I've been watching the entire first season of Friday Night Lights this past week, and I think he could pull it off. Ultimately, though, it's good news. It would've just caused confusion.

    by moto

    Come on. That would have been terrible. And Adam Brody may be 29, but he looks like he's 19. Scott Porter is the only one of the bunch I was rooting for. All American looks with acting range to boot. But the others?

    WB was trying to make this into something it is not, a kind of amped up X-Men, as far as the young looking casting goes. In my eyes, the only Justice League movie that would work would entail having a cast that is in their mid to late 30s at least.

    The difference between Justice League and X-Men is that the Justice League's heroes are, for the most part, iconic individual superheroes of comic lore. The X-Men movies, while they did have big names like Wolverine, were always identified as being young and being more team oriented.

    So with JL, having Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash so young just didn't have the same feel. JL would be BADASS if these iconic heroes were experienced, scared (emotional in Superman's case), battle torn, etc. And shit gets so bad in the world that they have to team up. THAT'S the movie the WB should shoot for. Not some light, yay for youth band of twenty somethings.

    JL needs casting like Nolan has done for the new Batmans (Christian Bale, need I say more?) While Bale was only 29 in 2003 when he was cast, he didn't LOOK that young. Brandon Routh as Superman is borderline, age-wise, but at least he wasn't a twenty something that looked like a teenager (i.e. Brody and Hammer). Can you really believe Armie Hammer, who's 21 years old (!?!?), as Batman? I'm a Friday Night Lights fan, so Scott Porter as Superman was the only casting I did like... even though he plays a teen in the show. Regardless, I would still rather have an older Superman.

    I think this is a blessing in disguise for the WB. Hey, the writer's strike actually worked for the good of a movie in development!

    Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that Warner Bros. Pictures let the options lapse on Tuesday for the cast members, which included D.J. The studio cited script issues as the one of the causes and the other is that the project needed tax breaks from shooting in Australia.

A Superman who looks like an Alex Ross drawing from Kingdom Come. Wonder Woman could look like she was 21 because she never really ages anyway-just get a decent actress. Imagine how cool it would be to get a story not based on but in the same vein as Kingdom Come or The Dark Knight Returns or hell,even Batman Beyond...older experienced legends teaming up to train a new generation and save the world.

    The little wannabe rock star asshole narrating I AM LEGEND when I saw it also booed the RAMBO trailer and said "God, retire already!" I'm so sick of you little bastards having no respect for your elders. People making cheap jokes about Indiana Jones being too old – what, you never heard of CLINT FUCKING EASTWOOD? He's as old as dirt and can and will crush your skull with one hand while having a heart attack. So fuck you. Older people look more interesting, they have more lines on their faces and more stories to tell. I want to see action heroes with some experience, and some grit. So I'm with you nerds, they shoulda got an old guy to play Batman and not a 21 year old (which by the way is confirmed in this article, so congratulations, you now know one thing about the movie to complain about).
    On the other hand, read that kid's profile on IMDb. Motherfucker is 6'5, does magic tricks AND collects knives, and is the heir to some famous industrialist. Doesn't say if his parents were killed and he wants revenge but I'll bet you your Batman pajamas that Miller cast him based on his background being similar to the character he's playing.
    By the way, what's up with everybody complaining that they're "nobodies"? If they can't act that's a problem but who knows. You thought this was gonna be OCEAN'S 11 or something? You wanna see Nicolas Cage and everybody in there, new faces make you uncomfortable? I don't get that one.

    It's NOT the age that most of us had...

    by lance2769

    ...a problem with, it was the young appearance that the aforementioned actors had. We've said it a million times: Christopher Reeve, Linda Carter and Christian Bale were all young but had a mature-look to them that perfectly fit with the superhero characters they were playing. With exception of Megan Gale and Common, all the other actors for this movie were grossly miscast. They all look like freakin' kids, WB or should I say CW kids at that. The title characters are called SuperMAN and WonderWOMAN for a reason NOT SuperKid, Superboy and WonderGirl. That being said..if anything good has come from this ever-going writer's strike, it has been the hopeful delay and eventual demise of this movie and the one hour Golden Globes show.

    Farewell

    by dr uwe boll

    ...to the AVP of Superhero movies. JLA will return (of course) but by then with a bit of luck we might be gearing up for Iron Man 2 (God that teaser trailer is like every comic-geeks fantasy come true), more Incredible Hulk - if the first turns out well (and I'm sure as hell hoping it kicks serious ass) or the final Nolan Batman (if that is to be the case - wipes tear from eye) - there's plenty to look forward to in Superhero-cinema before this clunker farts out onto the screen and makes children the world-over cry (I don't have an issue with the ages of actors playing these types of parts as long as they're well cast, I just have an issue with JLA period - give me individual films - not a cash-in ensemble).

    Another thing people forget when it comes to casting...

    by f-1000

    Fans had been saying Christian Bale would be perfect for Batman before a franchise reboot was even being considered. Needless to say, look at that movie, it's not just a commercial success, but a great film. And with The Dark Knight, hopefully we are getting another. But what are the people involved doing right? 1) Considering what people who have vested interest in the property and material have to say. (You can't tell me someone smart didn't find out about fan boys talking about how Christian Bale would be great and then going with it later on.) 2) Taking not just the material dead seriously, but more importantly, taking the process of its translation into a more realistic world that an intelligent viewer can relate to; dead seriously as well.
    You can translate many comic book story arcs to film, even some of the more absurd ones, more or less faithfully, but it is this fine balance between respecting the source material and capturing its essence, and editing for the real world that is impossible for most to pull off.
    That being said...RYAN REYNOLDS IS THE FLASH! Please please please make it so! I think the Flash is easily the most bankable DC character after Batman and Superman, also the most easily recognized. Green Lantern is a close second to the Flash in terms of general awareness. Wonder Woman is of course probably better known than both of them, but unless that movie is done very very well (hard to do, as campy as Wonder Woman is) and has a BANGIN' female lead, who is also tough enough to make you believe that even a positive cup check wouldn't save your nuts from her cracker if you made a lewd remark about her tight ass. Tough to pull off, indeed.

    Cheap leftovers cast is dead? HOOORAYYY

    by live.

    Has WB woke the fuck up? Thank you striking writers, your sacrifice has not been in vain.
    I love how Herc doesn't mention the 21 YEAR OLD BATMAN! But I guess that would defeat his argument.
    The rest of the cast wasn't too young. THEY WERE TOO CRAP. Not only did they lack experience, but they were bland and charmless. They weren't just cheap, they looked cheap.
    Jon Hamm might be earning minimum wage, but he'd bring a nice classy buzz to Batman. He isn't cheap. Zac Efron might be despised by everyone over the age of 12, but he is a mega-star to the pre-teens and his price is currently almost nothing. Put him in the younger Flash cameo, and watch the tweens turn out. He'd be inexpensive, without looking cheap. Tom Welling is stuck on tv and probably would do the movie for free. He's already got a fanbase who can see him in the role. He'd be inexpensive, without looking cheap. Thomas Jane's last few movies bombed. At this point, he might even pay WB to appear in a hit. He doesn't cost much, but he ain't cheap. Those are just some of the hundreds of possibilities.
    An inexpensive cast doesn't mean it has to be a CHEAP cast.

    Is that Christopher Reeve, Lynda Carter and Christian Bale looked like adults when they began playing their parts (and despite his excellent performance, I still think Routh looked too young), whereas everyone involved in Justice League, with the exception of Common and the girl they got for Wonder Woman, looks like they're still pulling bits of umbilical cord from their belly buttons.

    Christopher Reeve and Lynda Carter look mature to us now because we were kids when we saw them in the roles of Superman and Wonder Woman. Back then I thought 14 was ancient. Plus, I really do think people grew up quicker in those days you know? Its the norm now for twentysomethings to cling to the trappings of their youth (skateboarding, converse trainers, comic book reading, wearing hooded tops etc). Back in the seventies, 24 was probably still quite a mature age.

    Oh, and for Man of Steel, they should replace Kate Bosworth with Zooey Deshaniel.

    by necgray

    "Smug jerkoff writers starving": nice attitude, dick. I hope you remember you said that if you're ever out of work yourself. The only thing worse than a smug writer is a smug nobody on a message board. I guess, too, you're one of these asses who's never met a real workaday joe writer (ie: the majority) and ignores the fact that most of the writers in the WGA are "starving artists" (to borrow one of your words) already. On a side note, have you paid any attention at all to anything besides your own opinion about writers? For starters, they're already getting what they want from individual studios and production companies. This myth of a group of "moguls" who collectively oppose the WGA is just that: a myth. Purported largely by the AMPTP, who WANTS everyone to believe that all the studios are in solidarity. Well it just ain't so, pal. Second of all, the WGA has been saying the entire time that while public support is important to them, it's not necessary. So I don't think they ever "believed" that the "general public" would "rise up". That was never their primary concern. Of course, they DO have a great deal of public support, which only increases with the increase of individual deals being made. Showing that in fact it WAS largely the AMPTP who were being unreasonable and/or uncooperative. My point being that while public support is great and helps forward their cause, your baseless and uninformed antagonism, shared by those who believe as you do that the writers are somehow to blame for this strike and/or are somehow inferior to your personal vision of what a writer "should" be, has little effect on their strategy or whether or not they are "winning".

    by pipergates

    according to Reuters/Hollywood Reporter: "Word leaked in the fall that the script, by the husband-and-wife team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney, was good but that subsequent rewrites, including the latest by Miller, had pacing issues and took the project in the wrong direction." Does that mean that it maybe was the studio that didn't like Miller's ideas? I'm all for fixing the weaknesses but it bloody sad this gets delayed or shelved.And that Gale girl would have been wonderfully sexy wonder woman.

    pay them much. Get some actors that can actually act. Gosling as Aquaman, Farrel as Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Reynolds as the Flash

    And Megan Gale (undecided). As looks go, she fits the bill but as acting goes?????????

    Herc, it wasn't age that bothered us

    by vadakinx

    It was the fact that WB were ushing the roject at all. I know a lot of peole didn't like Superman Returns, but Routh was generally considered to be a good Superman, who just needed more to do.

    What a lot of us wanted, was Routh and Bale in a Worlds Finest movie...or if WB wanted to go down the JLA route, then for them to get the Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash solo movies done first and in 5 or 6 years, take the actors from the solo movies, including Routh and Bale, and then do a Justice League, after the solo franchises are up and running...you know, the same thing Marvel are doing.

    WB would have then had established solo stars who had grown into their roles already and were known by the audience as well as some new stars for Manhunter and Aquaman, who would have been the ones to get spin-offs from JLA.

    Personally, I'd do it in 2 parts...with a Worlds Finest movie using Routh and Bale going up against Intergang, mostly as a way to introduce the "real" Batman into the sci-fi/fantasy world...and then follow that up with JLA, using Darkseid as the villain.

    Hey WB, make some short 5 minute Superman films with Routh. Make a couple of them similar to the classic 40's cartoons. Great way of instilling confidence in the filmed character. If SR was a nod to Donner, then these films would be a nod to the Fleisher films. These short films could be shown before kids movies. I think the gods are shining down on the fans by having his movie put on the back-burner. Time to find the right director (Jackson, Timm, FRANK not George Miller) and artists and writers who know the characters inside and out (Mark Waid, Alex Ross, George Perez, Brad Meltzer).

    Disappointed...

    by philvis

    I was really having high hopes for this film. My biggest beef was they were possibly not going to have someone who could fill the iconic boots of Supes and Bats. In a perfect world, Bale would have been Bats, but Nolan is not going to play ball, so that can be counted out. For Supes, it should have been someone like Welling or someone who actually could look and play the part. Cotrona, Porter, etc. were not Superman, nor could they ever be. If you do not have a good Superman or Batman, the film would be mediocre at best. Those two roles have to be good. I still have a feeling they can salvage this one and perhaps Welling will be freed up. Just need to locate a good Batman.

    AGE

    by ky-el

    It's not the actual age that's a problem. It's the physical appearance at that age. The only casting that I have real issues with were Scott Porter for Supes and all the names for Batman. And all those actors mentioned that have played the parts before looked much older than their age compared to this crop. I mean Reeve was 24?! Look at that movie and tell me he looks 24.

    Thank the good lord they didn't do this. It's like a SMALLVILLE version of JLA. Bad actors, who are too young and really pretty. What the hell is with WB? Do they think we want a feature film episode of Smallville CW actors? BAD BAD BAD BAD IDEA.
    How can they look at the success of BATMAN BEGINS and then claim that this is the right path.

    This is all stupid TRANSFORMERS fault. The fact that it was a hit proved to the "big wigs" that you don't have to have any respect for the source material and long as you have pop culture stupidities.

    by snookeroo

    Being a comic book nerd from waaay back, having all these characters actually come to the screen is gold to me. Yep, some of the super hero movies are misses, but some have been spot-on, too. Yes, it IS important for the writing to be the best it can be -- but let's face it -- we're not talking deep literature here. We're talking about buff guys (and women) in tights beating the crap out of each other; essentially, Championship Wrestlers who can fly. The Justice League Movie is something that I have waited for, for a long time. This movie had lots of promise -- I'm disappointed that it's postponed. I hope it's not canceled altogether.

    Ages of the previous versions..

    by zerocorpse

    1. Christopher Reeve, 24 in 1976. Yes, and yet he looked older, and though he wasn't my favorite choice for Superman in terms of looks, he was a great actor who carried the character to places he hadn't previously been.
    Lynda Carter, 24 in 1975. I"m sorry, but Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman sucked. She had only two things going for her, and we all know what they were because they were all we were looking at. Her performance was stiff, and the costume was ridiculous with its granny panties and puffy fabric. Besides, they couldn't decide whether they wanted 1940s Wonder Woman, or 1970s Wonder Woman. So this is hardly a good point of reference for Wonder Woman.
    Christian Bale, 29 in 2003. Oh, yes. He may be the best of this bunch. However, He was playing Batman in the very beginning of his career, and NOT Batman after having done the superhero thing for a decade, so it was appropriate casting age-wise. On top of that, Bale is a great actor who could play older or younger with little trouble.
    Brandon Routh, 25 in 2004. A crappy Superman, and not just because of the script. His entire performance was just mimicking Christopher Reeve. It was an impersonation of another actor playing HIS version of the character. Routh looked too young (Superboy, rather than Superman) and although he was excellent at playing Chris Reeve playing Superman, he didn't give us Superman as he has been portrayed in comics since the 70s. Superman is supposed to be an older, authoritarian figure who looks like he's got might AND wisdom. I wouldn't accept an under-30 Captain America, and I wouldn't accept an under-30 Superman these days, unless you were telling his origin story yet again.
    I hated this cast, and frankly, the whole idea of this movie is bad. They won't make something as good as what's been put into animation because they'll compromise the characters in every way possible.
    Wait and watch Marvel to see how a superhero team movie should be done, when they crank out AVENGERS, which I predict will be closer to ULTIMATES than classic 616 Avengers.

    Reeve, Carter, Bale and Routh LOOKED the part.

    by riskebiz

    One look at Routh and you think "Superman". Same for Bale as Bruce Wayne and the others. But this JLA cast? NOT A CHANCE. I don't care how old they are ... they look like a low-rent OC rip-off. Not a one looks like they are perfect for their part. NOT. A. ONE. Best thing that can happen is they kill this movie. Or cast Routh as Superman, Bale as Batman and recast those other parts.

    Routh was a good Superman

    by thelastcleric

    He has the potential to be even better if Singer can leave the ghosts of Donner and Reeve out of the sequel. I agree he borrowed some aspects from Reeve but it wasn't a complete rip-off and I think most of what he did borrow was due to the script and Singer's direction. Any guy willing to pack on 60 pounds of muscle for the role obviously takes the character seriously and I really want to see Routh in a sequel where he can do more of his own thing.

    Thank you GOD!!!!

    by nerosday

    These are iconic heros. Look at it this way:
    Superman = a near living god amongst us.
    Batman = the penultimate of human physical and mental conditioning and will.
    Wonder Woman = The distance of the immortal ancient gods from those they once oversaw and who have forgotten them.
    Green Lantern = The power and possibility of the human imagination.
    Flash = well, he's flash. He's the fastest man alive... cool in-and-of itself.
    Manhunter = the unbiased view of what we as mankind look like through eyes not our own.

    My point is this... Actors who play on television shows devoted to teens and tweens, who are more used to being pampered for their looks than their ability, and who look young enough to be a side kick, do NOT need to play icons. Seriously people, kill it. Let it die. Let WB get over their ego and let Dini have this script. Get another director who won't cast children. And actors who will embody these characters, not just loosely inhabit their costumes like my kid in under-roos running around saying, "I'm Batman."

    There needs to be a Superman/Batman crossover before there is a JLA movie. THe 2 characters are too important to share a team up with 5 other characters.
    I would really like to see Batman and Superman in the same film, treated realisticly. A vigilante meeting an alien. One uses peace to inspire, the other uses terror to intimidate.
    THEN have the JLA film.

    by oisin5199

    Even their rumored Maxwell Lord casting looked like a teenager. BTW, Batman Begins was 2005 and Superman Returns was 2006. Get it right. I still wish we could have seen a Joss Whedon Wonder Woman, or at least find out why the idiots at the studio didn't go for it. For once I seem to be in the majority here that are glad this JLA movie is on the rocks and think they should build up to a JLA movie with solo movies first, not the other way around. That's how it happened in the comics (for the most part). The only reasons to go their current route are impatience and greed. Not that I expect a movie studio to give a shit about artistic integrity. Having said that, Megan Gale would have had a great Wonder Woman look. Whether she could act or not is a different story. Something tells me that even if her option runs out, she'll still be available if they ever do this.
    Oh, and I'd like to run out her option! badabing!
