And Now - For the Next Strange Weird Foreign Thing That Harry Loses His Mind Over... CJ7!!!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2008 4:12:11 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... wow... I'm not entirely sure how Stephen Chow continually creates things of such awesome splendor that my mind goes into Robby The Robot spitz and cracklez - but he does it. Chow says that he loved E.T. as a kid and was inspired to make his own run at that type of thing. And here is what he came up with. It looks spectacular and the creature is so incredibly cute. And the best news - we get it stateside on March 7th! Woo Hoo!!!

STEPHEN CHOW HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN

    by halsolo

Not once. In fact, his movies are too all over the map to EVER be a great trailer. Things I saw in there that I loved: Alien kicking dog in head, parody of MI2 exploding sunglasses, class conflict, Stephen Chow getting smacked, kids fighting in playground in over the top wire fu ... I mean, GOD OF COOKERY, SHAOLIN SOCCER, KUNG FU HUSTLE - he hasn't dropped the ball yet, don't think this is gonna start THAT trend.

    As for "bad" CG...

    by halsolo

Few directors allow CG to go where Chow takes it in terms of entertainment, humor, and cinematic flair - if its not perfect that's a sacrifice I'm willing to accept for hilarious visuals. That melting creature is AWESOME. Besides, he chucks tons of VFX per film now, I'm sure there's more scope to this than we know. Better than the ball sof blurry mechanical parts that were Transformers...

Stephen Chow is brilliant and ambitious. He makes movies no one else would even try to make and he takes chances no one else ever would. Stop being so goddamn negative. The man's films are nonstop insanity. So what if the CGI is bad...it's what he does with it that counts.

Chow's CG usage always looks awkward and insane. But it's only a movie people, since when does it have to look like star wars? When did seeing movies become such a chore? Why do they have to look like something we've seen before? It is so hard to give movies a fuckin chance? Christ...there are a lot of people on these talkbacks that need to leave because they're bringing everyone else down with them.

    Subtitles

    by spiegeltrui

Agreed, Simplisico. If a kid's old enough to read, he should be old enough to read subtitles. If a kid is too young to read it doesn't matter either because kids at that age don't really watch movies for the dialog anyway, but for the wonderful pictures, which is exactly what Chow is good at, which is why this film will be fun for people of all ages from all countries! Go Sony, go! (And release it in the smaller cities in the Netherlands too this time please, you owe me after Kung Fu Hustle!)

Love Stephen Chow King of Comedy is his best

    by picardsucks

King of Comedy, God of Cookery , Tricky Brains are my favs. Chow also introduced some of the hottest Chinese ass to cinema in his films. Cecelia Chung and Karen Mok are about as fucking smoking hot as it gets. Once you get the hang of the subtitles( any moron should be able to do so)you really get hooked into Hong Kong cinema. Stephen Chow, Johnnie To, Shaw Bros. films, Younger faster more badass Jackie Chan, John Woo (his great work not his shitty American work) There is literally a whole amazing world of cinema way better than most of the shit hollywood churns out now days. I started with Stephen Chow and own about 15 of his films, then the Shaw studios library (The 5 Deadly Venoms -bitches!!) Own about 150 Shaw films, Own about 20 Andy Lau and Johnnie To films. I know many of these films are hard to rent but they are pretty cheap to purchase. HKflix is a good source, Ebay for cheaper bootlegs.

Chow's best for me is still From Beijing With Love, if nothing else then for the hilarious "special magic jumping box" sequence, but all his stuff is gold. The goofy CGI is definately part of the fun and I don't think Chow's really aiming for realism in a movie with a hyperactive flubber clone. I loved the part where he couldn't get the kid to shut up, so he just locked him in the cupboard. Good parenting 101!

...Down under. Saw the trailer a couple of times. Sorry, but I don't know who the hell its for...Little white kids won't read subtitles, and its clearly gonna be hard to take for the over 12's. Although all the honkie girls giggled up a storm when the trailer was on, so, I guess it wouldn't hurt if you were dating a vapid collection or hair and fake nails. I'll still get it on DVD, since his other work has been so much fun. Been a Loooong time between flicks for this guy.

    Subtitles

    by deandome

You guys are high. While this movie certainly looks to be a true family-flick, the 5-13 y.o. set seems to be it's wheelhouse. 12 & up, yeah....they can handle subtitles, but my 3rd grade-level reading 1st grader wouldn't give it the time of day.

Subtitles whiz by, and young kids can't keep up and/or pay attention to the movie & words at the same time.

This movie won't fly as a teen-adult comedy, it is made for, and NEEDS, young kids to be a success.

No subtitles = no YOUNG kids....period.
