‘This Ain’t Aruba, Bitch!!’ THE WIRE 5.2 Hits HBO!! THE WIRE 5.3 Hits On Demand!!

Published at:  Jan 13, 2008 7:01:33 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

What to expect for 5.2, hitting HBO tonight (beware the spoilage):

* A very hot girl talks about making and breaking rules in front of a bunch of other addicts, Bubbles among them.

* Lester Freamon explains why investigating Maryland state senator Clay Davis is more fun than staking out the corner kids, then returns to watching Marlo’s crew.

* Marlo Stanfield, believing the cash-strapped police have finally abandoned surveillance, makes plans for his enemies, including the “dicksucker” who robbed him last season.

* The homicide detectives consider other employment as McNulty considers the sad state of the motor pool.

* Carcetti considers what to do about council president Nurese Campbell now that the Sun has exposed her real estate misbehavior.

* The Sun’s executive editor decides who will write the paper’s Pulitzer-bait series about the Baltimore school system’s failures. But the same reporter has difficulty finding a hard-core Orioles fan on opening day. (Want to see a great movie about the ethics of journalism? Check out “Shattered Glass” (2003).)

* In the morgue, McNulty discovers an interesting physiological phenomenon.

* In stir, Barksdale brings together fellow west-sider Marlo with Sergei as a conduit to the Greek suppliers.

* Thanks to Carcetti refusing to play ball on the Davis matter, the feds refuse to help with the Marlo case.

* The commissioner refuses to help Davis.

* McNulty, Bunk and Lester consider the value of young black males versus a white cheerleader gone missing in Aruba.

* Snoop and Chris continue Michael’s education.

* A very small witness to Marlo’s misdeeds emerges.

No Carver, No Herc, No Valchek, no Bunny, no Parenti, no Prez, no Beadie, no Mello, no Royce, no Omar, no Prop Joe, no Cutty, no Mouzone, no Vondas.

For the return of at least some of these characters, we may look to 5.3, allegedly hitting HBO On Demand at midnight:

Episode #53: "Not for Attribution"
Debut: SUNDAY, JAN. 20 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Other HBO playdates: Jan. 20 (10:30 p.m.), 22 (11:00 p.m.), 23 (midnight), 24 (10:00 p.m.) and 25 (8:00 p.m.)
HBO2 playdates: Jan. 21 (10:00 p.m.), 24 (1:45 a.m.) and 28 (9:00 p.m.)
Carcetti's master plan for the police department is leaked to the press, sending the brass into a panic. Marlo turns to Proposition Joe to help with an enviable problem. Whiting and managing editor Thomas Klebanow (David Costabile) drop a bombshell on the newspaper staff. Michael (Tristan Wilds) finds temporary respite from his life on the corner by taking Dukie (Jermaine Crawford) and Bug (Keenon Brice) on a trip. McNulty shares some inside info with Gutierrez, but her subsequent story doesn't cause the splash either envisioned. Undaunted, McNulty looks for a new ally in Freamon.

Teleplay by William F. Zorzi; story by David Simon & William F. Zorzi; directed by Ernest Dickerson.

After 5.3, only seven episodes left.

    by eggbeater

I think Lester will die of something like a heart attack. I think Bubbs will go back to drugs and OD and die and the newspaper will exploit it and carcetti will catch shit for it. McNulty is cracking. Bad. Marlo will continue to reign. Omar will be killed by Chris. But I really hope that doesn't happen. This is the best show of all time. I can listen to Bunk for hours.

    Predictions

    by funketeer

I think Omar's going to bite it as well but I think it's going to be Michael who does it. Last season, they showed Chris teaching Michael how to aim under where a man might wear a bullet proof vest. That same episode emphasized the vest the Omar wears when he goes out to work. It seemed like some pretty awkward telegraphing to me which is unusual for this show. There's a great article in the Chicago Tribune today (posted on their web site) about David Simon and the show. Make sure to read it off the blog instead of the main page so you can get the full text of her interview with Simon and his former editor. It's especially fun to read because, while they don't really make a deal out of it, Simon has long blamed the Tribune company for what happened to the Baltimore Sun.

I'm just glad Herc (and by extension AICN) finally jumped on the Wire bandwagon, even if it is a few seasons late. The best thing about this writer's strike is that there are fewer useless cookie-cutter network shows (ie; Desperate Housewives) to compete for the attention that should rightly be given to the last season of this series.

She's the same girl who was buying dope in Hamsterdam in season 3 (the one in the car who doesn't want to make smalltalk with the drug dealer), and then in season 4 she's in Old Face Andre's store buying Newports for her pimp. I love how even these minor extras are given their own story arcs, if you're paying enough attention to notice them.

    by turketron

The HBO HD channel doesn't broadcast the show in HD, but in 480p, if I'm not mistaken, with the bars on the sides. I might be mistaken, but I thought it broadcast in HD last season. And to those saying "What's The Wire"... sigh... go and watch season 1 and you'll see why a lot of us regard it as one of the best shows on TV. This is the 5th and final season of this great show.

Anyone else not impressed by last night's ep?

    by rickey henderson

I thought last night's episode was way the hell too contrived. Jimmy McNulty rearranging a crime scene to make it look like the work of a serial killer? A Jason Blaire inspired storyline about a reporter fudging a story? Avon Barksdale suddenly showing up out of nowhere? Reporters sitting around having a very meta conversation about how “Dickensian” the Baltimore education system is? Yeah, the writers have gotten a little full of themselves all of a sudden... The writers need to dial down the didacticism and get back to that brooding urban environment that made the show so great in the first place.

    by rickey henderson

I'm just not digging the idea of McNulty going down in flames over tampering with a crime scene. It's a pretty stupid gimmick. And it breaks up the Bunk/McNulty dymanic that makes the show so much fun. The less said about the newspaper preachyness, the better. But yes, the show is still the best goddamned thing on tv, and after four seasons of excellence, they've earned my time every Sunday night from 9 to 10 no matter what.

I had that didac-dick in my ear feeling while watching last night, too, but mostly when Lester was explaining to Sydnor why following the money up the ladder was more real than following the gunshots through the vacants. But then I thought, "Maybe Lester would get preachy from time to time." The reporters didac-Dickens conversation, though, made complete sense to me because the writing was supposed to expose the latent narrative-chasing/creating obsession in the top dogs at the newspaper.
I'm sure the writing will warm up once the newcomers are caught up and the themes are fully introduced. It always takes two or three eps to really get crackling (too bad that's a whole 30% of season five's ten episode truncation).

    McNulty's story

    by bizarrojerry

I have to say I was very disappointed when in the first episode we see McNulty's drinking again and ignoring Beadie. Even with his smaller role last year, I loved the fact that he decided to put on a uniform, not care anymore and just be with everyone's favorite dock cop. Yes, you could argue that it's the job that makes him drink and that deep down he missed detective work all last season... but can't a person turn their life around? I know The Wire is often all about sad realities of life, but can't we have one positive thing for a character?

No mention of the copier/ lie detector?

    by bizarrojerry

That lie detector / copy machine bit was also used in a early first season episode of Homicide. But it doesn't count as ripping the show off. As many know, Homicide was based on Simon's real-life book detailing the Baltimore homicide unit, and the copier trick was in the book as well. Just found it interesting that nobody minded using it again. Though this version didn't have Richard Belzer scaring the suspect with "We're gonna neutron this little bastard!"

My 2 cents on the reporters' Dickens discussion

    by jeffthx

As I watched that scene, it seemed to me to be a commentary on the entire previous season. "You don't need a lot of context to examine what happens in a single classroom." "Really? I think you need a lot of context to seriously examine anything." After recently rewatching season 4, I think that this exchange really describes that season. Instead of simplifying the problems of inner-city schools, S4 showed all of the context that creates the situation (bad parenting, drugs, politics, apathy, etc.). Later in the scene, the head editor (?) says, "I don't want some amorphous series detailing society's ills. If you leave everything in, soon you've got nothing." I viewed this as a swipe at the typical TV viewer (not of this show), with the editor representing viewers who are might be too challenged by this show to stick with it and give it the attention it deserves. Or maybe I'm overthinking it. This is my first post on AICN (although I've been a reader for many years). While I've watched The Wire for the past several seasons, I've been on a big Wire kick lately, which is why I decided to throw some commentary into the mix. I'm happy to see a talkback for this excellent show.

About new eps showing up late OnDemand...

    by bizarrojerry

Now, I'm only familiar with my own cable company and its equipment, so I don't want to make people fuck up their system, BUT... I've noticed that there are times when my system doesn't always update when it should. I'm guessing its some setting the viewer has no control over. Anyway, I find that if something doesn't show up OnDemand when it's supposed to, I can just unplug the power to the cable box completely. Then plug it back in and let it go through its startup -- which sometimes takes up to ten minutes, I'd guess. Once it's back, the scheduled show is now on the list. It's basically what happens if you have a power outage, anyway. NOTE: I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF THIS SCREWS UP YOUR SYSTEM. I'm just telling you what happens with mine.

    You Are Correct!

    by vod_guy

BizarroJerry, You are absolutely correct. I will try to give you a brief breakdown; it all depends on whether you have a Scientific Atlanta Box or a Motorola Box and where you live.
    1. The Set-top boxes have anywhere between 8MB of memory and 64MB of memory on it, depensing on model etc etc.. On the boxes that have lower memory after days of downloading new Guide Data (for your channels) along with the VOD guide information it will tend to simply stop updating thus requiring a reboot..
If you have one of the newer boxes.. HD or DVR boxes with the 64MB memory it can go for weeks and weeks without requiring a reboot... If you do have one of these boxes and are constantly having to boot it, it's probably an RF problem.. your losing 2 way connectivity with the plant and your box is losing it's IP address.(Check your fittings,Check your Splitter and look for cracks in your line), if problems persists schedule a service call. Most Cable Companies usually go through and reboot old boxes with low memory in the early morning hours in sort of a round robin every few weeks to clear up these issues.

    Missing 5.3

    by amadeo zeller

I co-sign with BizarroJerry. In fact a couple of weeks ago, i posted the same solution/remedy on how i solve my cable box problems. It's all about the re-boot. I live in the So. L.A. area and also have Time Warner Cable. So far, i haven't had any problems with their on demand system pertaining to The Wire this season...Now last season, was a different story. I was experiencing the same issues that some of you guys are going through now, so i feel your pain.
