Fidel Castro Has Discovered The Fountain Of Youth? Images from Soderbergh's CHE epics emerge!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Can't wait to see this two film epic from Soderbergh. I know the OCEAN films pay the bills, but this is the sort of material that really turns us film fans onto Steven in the first place. Demian Bichir looks fantastic as Fidel - and this is a production I think we'll all look forward to hearing more on as the year progresses, right? And remember, Castro wants you to vote Huckabee!

Hi Harry! Just wanted to pass along these new photos from the set of Steven Soderbergh's two-movie Che Guevara epic, "The Argentine" and "Guerrilla." These new pics were first leaked to BenicioDelToro.Ca. They show Demian Bichir in the role of Fidel Castro. Personally I preferred the original choice, Javier Bardem, who was originally cast but moved on when Soderbergh postponed "Guerrilla" to do "Ocean's 13." Still, the sets and costumes look amazingly authentic! If you use this just call me The Crawling King Snake.

    Castro Supports Liberals Harry

    by ViktorBC

He always has. It was never a conservative anchor that interviewed him after all. Always liberals. The liberal mentality is based on the same doctrine of socialism that Castro based his own government on. Don't forget: Che=homicidal murderer who killed his own people in cold blood! Not a Goddamn ati-hero! They were both badguys which all communists tend to be. Yeesh.

Is this film aimed at US audiences?

    by morGoth

Other than a few misguided wanna-be Kommies, I just don't see Che as a figure that people will pay good money to see in theatres. The Kommies lost the cold war because, as Frank Zappa once said, "The first word out of a child's mouth is MINE!" Really, who wants to see another film about some murdering ideological loser? I s'pose there are enough Komrades on the rest of the planet who may be interested but this movie is going to go straight to video in the US. Even then, I still won't watch it.

I'm sure Soderbergh is going to show the C.I.A's pivotal role in bringing down Che, and for that the Conservatives will be against it. Eventhough it's true.

    That ain't Castro!

    by TheBloop

Those are some shots of Rick Baker’s makeup for “The Wolfman”. You know what really ironic? The Hollywood elite’s love for Che (and all things communist), while they never really realize that their $20 million per movie lifestyle would be impossible to have under a Marxist system. Unless of course they were whoring around with some top commie government officials, who skim all the money off the top, secretly living the life of a rich capitalist. And at the same time they preach about peace they ignore the fact of the millions killed in the name of Communism. When is the last time a Hollywood actor protested for reparations for Pol Pots killing fields or Stalin’s round up and massacre of “dissidents”?

  • Jan. 4, 2008, 6:38 a.m. CST

EL CHE was a murderer who enjoyed killing, did it for fun

    by Orionsangels

He could kill you if you looked at him wrong. He even killed children without a second thought. As kid he killed cats for fun. Read a book! This is the hero of the extreme left. They wear him on T-shirts, get tatts of him. Libs only admire him because he went against the establishment, against the man.

  • Jan. 4, 2008, 7:09 a.m. CST

Info I found on Malick project

    by ViktorBC

For his fourth feature, Malick considered directing a biopic about Che Guevara, and wrote a screenplay for it, but later relinquished the project to director Steven Soderbergh. He chose to make The New World instead, the script of which he finished in the late 1970s. The film features a romantic interpretation of the story of John Smith and Pocahontas, filmed in the usual transcendental Malickian style. The film was scheduled for limited release on December 25, 2005, and for general release in mid-January 2006; it was nominated for an Academy Award and received largely positive reviews during its theatrical run. Over one million feet of film was shot during the isolated filming schedule, resulting in a final film which ran for 150 minutes before Malick decided to temporarily withdraw the film from release and re-edit it into a 135-minute version.

    by HarrysNemesis

Conservatives (and people of any intelligence) won't like the movie because it will be the typical hollywood glorification of communist murderers offering no real criticism of them, but holds them up as cli-che'd heros. It doesn't matter how many innocent people were killed and put in prison, these guys are 'heros' to the left. I can see why they would be if you're a communist, otherwise not so much. The actor does make a good castro though. The movie is destined to bomb though as liberals don't like to see political commentary movies unless they're michael moore documentaries (see all the anti-iraq war movies that have bombed in the last few months as example). Average americans won't be interested. Conservatives will threaten a boycott :)

    Commie lovin' hollywood stars

    by HarrysNemesis

It's not about being 'against the extreme right' -- these guys really are communists (Danny Glover, Sean Penn, etc) -- they never outgrew that high school phase of 'gee wouldn't it be great if the world ran this way'. Of course the only thing they wouldn't like communism is it taking THEIR $$$ away, but communism rarely works that way in the real world. The elites do well in communism just as they do in capitalism -- look at the old Soviets or even Cuba today. The elites always do well. Who suffers? The poor people who are 'lucky' to be equally poor instead of there being some haves and some have nots. You can't eliminate poverty by outlawing prosperity and preventing class differences goes against human nature. Those who hold power and prestige in society will always be elevated in class because they have the power to make it so. Does Castro live like his average citizen? Don't think so.

The other thing liberals love about communism is that communism has no tolerance of individual rights -- therefore as Castro did -- you can get RID of those who disagree with you -- the old fashioned way. Let's put it this way, if Sean Penn or Danny Glover had their way, about 40% of the population (AT LEAST) would be either in jail or dead for their political beliefs, and they would have no problem with the government trampling on our rights to make their political philosophy a reality. In the spirit of Castro, they'd love to see every elected republican strung up if they could because they're 'evil.' Interestingly, it is rarely evil to want someone else dead for having conservative political beliefs (to a hardcore liberal such as Sean Penn, Danny Glover, etc).

I will give this to Penn -- he does have balls -- going to Iraq and such. Can't say the same for Glover, who only hangs out with tyrants who wish to harm our country when there's no actual physical risk to him. At least Penn walks the walk even if I disagree with him.

    by 5thBusiness

Okay, i hate bringing the politics into this movie shit, but it's sort of unavoidable here. I'm a total left winger who believes firmly in a social safety net, universal healthcare, etc. Having said that, communism sucked. And Castro, while he did positive things for many of his people half a century ago, is a monomaniacal despot who has done, and continues to do, awful things to most of his people today. And don't get me started on "Che chic". Btw, has anyone seen the "Onion" world atlas? There's an awesome photoshop of Che wearing a Che t-shirt. Hey Soderbergh, you know what a real hero looks like? Try Lech Walesa or Vaclav Havel, men who tried to shine the light of humanity into the black night of Soviet era communism.

The only thing funnier than people who think it's cool

    by smackfu

to have Che Guevara on their T-shirts , are the people who invariably cry out 'learn who Che Guevara was, he was a murderer!' as though it's some kind of revelation. It's common knowledge. On a fundamental level, you are only saying this because in the ever-raging internet forum pissing contest, you feel this gives you a victory over your opponent, he thought he was smart for having a communist revolutionary on his shirt, you've proven you're smarter by correcting him and informing him that if he rose to your level of intellect, he'd see the error of his ways. Now I'm sure as you read this, you're mentally debating it, but here's the thing that proves it. How many times have you seen someone wearing a Charles Manson T-shirt? Did you stop to preach to them and educate them on the fact that Manson was a serial killer? Probably not. Because you assume that the guy wearing the Manson shirt knows exactly who he is, and you're not going to appear smart by 'informing' someone of something everyone knows. But with Che, you've assumed it's not common knowledge that he was a brutal killer, so by 'informing' people of that you feel you appear a little bit smarter. Only the thing is, Che's status as a bad man is very, very common knowledge. So you saying this in a forum is like saying 'Don't you know Manson was a serial killer?' to someone wearing a Manson shirt. Yes, they know, and you now ironically seem dumber for having assumed they didn't.

    People talk so authoritatively...

    by BrooseTheScharuk

...like they were there, or even alive when all of this happened. Either angle you look at this kind of subject from, you are going to see it through a haze of hearsay and misinformation, built up over years and years by those involved, those on the sidelines, and those who weren't involved at all but have opinions nonetheless. We're all just ill-informed wankers who talk a lot of shit we know relatively little about. Having said that, my belief -- as misguided as it may be -- is that the majority of misinformation and manipulation of facts and perceptions comes from the US government, or elements within it. Many will likely disagree with that, but I believe that history (both past and future) will prove this to be true. I don't say this to be gloating or vindictive; I'm not out to insult anyone. It's just a very very sad truth. The ideals and principals on which America was founded are truly great and noble, but I think that the rich are wiping their asses with that stuff now. That's who's in charge and has been since the country was sold out to bankers in the early 20th century: outrageously rich individuals who don't give a flying fuck about you or me, whether we speak for or against them. Or maybe I'm wrong. I don't think I am, but at least I'm willing to entertain the idea.

    pipergates, you ignorant slut!

    by morGoth

Hey dude, how's it going? Heh, believe it not, I do have a life (and knowledge of other things) outside LotR and now (yay!), the Hobbit.
So, did you actually read my post above? I do recognize that many other folks outside the US, particularly in South America, idolize Che. I guess being one of those Loathsome Baby Boomers kinda gives me a life-long disliking (see: hatred) of any and all things Kommunist. One possible exception would be Ho Chi Minh as he was a nationalist first and Kommie second. I read up on ol' Che and Castro when I were but a tween and, I agree, they both started out with noble intentions but murderous means will never, ever justify any end. Though I ostensibly agree with you about Bush, I hope you agree that the context is different.
In the context of a "revolution," atrocities certainly occur just as they do in traditional declared war. Most everyone can recognize it as a fact of armed conflict that any side will see their combatants do this. However, we are discussing a specific individual who not only ordered but actively engaged in pulling the trigger on his perceived enemies…not only on the battlefield but execution style. Would Bush, theoretically, have ever done anything like that? I contend that any human being on the planet has that potential but, of course, he never did (Cheney, on the other hand...) Are you saying we should go back to the type of conflicts where only the leaders duke it out? Wouldn’t that put, say, Bin Laden in the same boat as Bush then? After all, he sent his goons to do the actual dirty, and I mean dirty, work. Moot discussion anyhoo as that’s just now how armed conflict on a national level works…would that it did!
Finally, it were the Thingfish what said that, not Zappa (snicker).

I grew up around all this shit. My relatives were there. I know all the stories. I know the truth. You fuckin gringos just see it from a far. Communist aren't for the people. It's all bullshit. Hugo Chavez, Castro. These bastards live like kings while their people live like shit. It's all an act. The only people that get any benefits are the rich tourist and celebrities. Who bring in the Money. They're treated like royality. So of course Sean penn. Ed Asner, Robert Redford, all these commie lovin pigs, have nothing but nice things to say about these commie bastards. Funny thing is, Hugo Chavez is laughing at them behind their backs. You don't understand spanish. He says things about hollywood celebs and Americans that isn't registering with white America.

You don't like the rich becauce anti-capitalists have told you to do so. Actually, I should say convinced you of their "evil". It is not like in the movies. Liberal policy is, come up with a great idea that makes you rich and you will be punished for it. For every Lex Luthor there's 10 Bruce Waynes ot Tony Starks.

    Actually, Even Creepy Capitalists

    by kevinwillis.net

End up being restrained by the market, and end up serving the public out of their own self-interest, or die. They don't have to be inherently philanthropic (in fact, the big philanthropist tend to endow non-profit organizations that, within a generation, become staffed and run by academics agitating for socialism and against capitalism). The free market ends up serving the customer, and much of the "evil" of the free market are actually result (in one way or another) of government interference or legal regulation trying to "improve" on the markets. Attempts to control prices or prevent price gouging always result in what? Hoarding and shortages. Free market pricing (even gouging) results in supplies getting to where they are most needed the quickest. If gougers can get $10 for a bottle of water in a disaster area, that area will not want for water--and the huge influx of water-bearers wanting to make $10 a bottle on water will end up driving down the prices! But, no, elite socialists know better than the free market, so price cap flu vaccine, driving most of the makers of the vaccine out of the business so there are shortages--that are then blamed on the pharmaceutical companies!

    by kevinwillis.net

Could be (and may be) a selfish little shallow price, and the free market still works--because if they screw their customers, or just don't serve them as well as the next guy, they are going to be put out of business. When they want to screw the little guy (which big business often does), where does it go? To fat cats on Wall Street? No, my friends. Big business goes to Big Government when it wants to secure itself a monopoly or drive legitimate competitors out of business. If you're a (relative, but still billion dollar) small fry fighting a big successful company, nothing like bringing the DOJ in on an anti-trust case. When Pan-Am wanted a monopoly on air-travel, did it try to buy every other airline (well, yes, but not everybody was in the market to sell). So did it try to drive everybody else out of business with competetive pricing? Nope--it went to the government, and demanded that the government pass a law making them the only legal airline in America! Didn't work, but the hothouse environment of the heavily regulated air travel industry still makes that an unpleasant field to work in and with which to do business. But I digress.

  • Jan. 4, 2008, 2:36 p.m. CST

    Answer to seppukudkurosawa

    by ViktorBC

Not exactly. The model of a conservative is conserving the values this nation was based on. You have the right to say or believe anything you want. Many conservatives believe that Liberals want to change those rights by converting this "capitalist republic" into theocratic socialist dystopia one ACLU lawsuit at a time. Indeed, look out the ACLU is coming! They have defended known terrorists, child molesters and other predators for their agenda. Americans, despite having, for the most part, Judeo-Christian values, are unaware of this. The 1st amendment protects Americans, for example, from a National religion like the Church of England. There is no such thing as "separation of church and state" in the Constitution. Hugo Black created that term. A member of the Democratic Party, Black represented the state of Alabama in the United States Senate from 1926 to 1937, and served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. Widely regarded as one of the most influential Supreme Court justices in the 20th century, he was nominated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 63 to 13. Black became a member of the Robert E. Lee Klan No. 1, a branch of the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, in 1923. His hatred of emigrating Irish Catholics influenced him to "reinterpret" the Bill of Rights to fit his desires. Hence, seperation of Church and State.

The ones who are forcing campasinos to pay for privatized rainwater and have defoliated Peru so often that coca is now the ONLY THING that will grow there. I've been all over that continent; I've seen how those people live and I know that they know WHY. And they have every right to want to burn your smug State Department ass into the ground for what you've paid for and had done.

  • Jan. 4, 2008, 4 p.m. CST

    Sepulchrave...sorry amigo

    by Philvis

but you don't know what you are talking about. My wife is from Peru and there are not large areas deforested from DEA/CIA missions etc. making the peasants farm coca instead. People grow coca because it is profitable, whether it be for illegal or legal uses. South America has always been in shambles and will stay in shambles until everyone is educated there. The "leaders" there prey on the uneducated masses by promising this and that and in the end the people get more taken from them. It's the oldest trick in the book. The government comes in and confiscates land from the rich and redistribute to the poor. The poor who don't have the management skills do not know how to run farms, etc. and they take loans out readily given by the govt for equipment and such. Since their farms are doomed from the start, when it comes time to pay back the gov't, they are unable and the govt then takes the land, effectively taking from the rich through the backdoor. The corruption never ends. People like Che and Castro manipulate the poor just like scum like Chavez is doing now. They use the people to rise to power to help them out, but in the end, it is just to serve their means and the cycle never ends.

  • Jan. 4, 2008, 4:04 p.m. CST

    YOU GUYS ARE SIMPLIFYING.............

    by Alexander Luthor

...some really complex issues. Yes Che and Castro have killed people and yes Castro is a dictator and freedoms are limited in Cuba. BUT, look up Operation Condor on wikipedia. These guys came to power and led political and social (and yes, militaristic) movements against equally and in some cases more brutal authoritarian regimes that were supported by the US government either openly or covertly. Look at the assasination of Allende and the placement of Pinochet as an example of how this worked. Or look at the history of the Contras and the Sandanistas in Nicaragua, El Salvador etc. I was totally against most US foreign policy decisions over the past 50 years since my time in college and in grad school a guy that grew up in El Salvador during the war between the US backed, tyrannical Contras and the Sandanistas was going on. His monther was a supporter of the Sandanistas. She was captured by Contra forces and tortured. He told me of how they used elictricity to shock her vagina for god's sakes. He also told me of picking up dead bodies from the war in his neighboring villages and how the carnage was so total that you had to look down a dead body's pants to determine if they were male or female because their faces and physical features were either destroyed or burned off. His first memory is his mom teaching him to write and his village was attacked. The grenades and bombs going off and shaking so much that she told him to put his pencil between his teeth so that he wouldn't bite his tongue off during the explosions. Living in these areas of the 3rd world is hell for all types of people (conservative, liberal, authoritarian or communist). And that's when I realized, for myself, that the world is not simply right or wrong. It's a series of bad choices. There are no good choices or political philosophies that work 100% of the time. Communism did bring some equality to people's lives but it also took away a lot of their freedoms. Socialism spread wealth in some cases and was used as a cover in other cases to consolidate power ( think Hussein in Iraq). But socialism in western european countries had really changed people's lives for the better. On the flip side the fall of communism has totally changed many of the former soviet blocs for the better. Communism as Lenin and Stalin practiced it was clearly a failure. That said, my friend growing up in El Salvador was brutalized and so was his family because they supported a POPULAR and populist movement that was socialist and was much better in terms of treatment of the people in his home country then the right wing groups. And our government secretly supported his oppressors. All I'm saying is, we are nearly 20 years past the end of the Cold War . America is clearly capitalist. But it is also made of socialist policies. Social Security. the movement for national health care. Medicare. Medicaid. Hell, even our education system as well as most of our utility and road and highway systems are run on socialist policies. Worker's compensation, the right to form a union, sick days, protections against sexual harassment....all socialist in origin. Not capitalist. It's time we put those simplistic notions of politics and good and evil aside. Outside of clear demons like Hitler, Bin Laden, Kim Jong Il in North Koreain Iran and a few others that you already know there are mostly conflicted, complex, gray-area style political leaders in our history. This could be an interesting movie if it properly situates the communist revolutionary spirit of that time within the context that these people were genuinely rebelling against oppressive forces and in so doing became oppressive in their own right in order to hold up their high ideals. That is what is so interesting about power and ideology. So don't count a movie out just because it's about questionable people or people who's ideologies you don't necessarily agree with. Put it this way, if a movie about Hitler came out directed by PT Anderson and starring Daniel Day Lewis and it examined his life, the social, political and economic strife of early 20th century Germany and the xenophobia against non-whites and the birth of jingoism and how it relates to power, politics and society in general. If a movie like that came out and it looked cool and tried to be authentic then people would probably be something we would all line up for as serious movie fans. Some of you just need to get over it. I know socialism is still a 4 letter word to many of you but it is here in america and it's not going anywhere. My family and friends have personally benefitted from social security, welfare policies and job re-training programs run by the government (socialist). And the others of you who hate capitalism also need to get over it. This is a capitalist country and sometimes conservatives win and enact policies that you may disagree with (like limiting civil rights of homosexuals or starting wars preemptively on less than solid evidence). But I would rather then have their say then tell them that they can't vote or have any say at all and that anyone that questions what I believe should have to be imprisoned or not allowed to vote. What do ya think, guys?

The Rove/Coulter/Lumbaugh propoganda machine has totally brainwashed many people in the US. Che and Castro could've only dreamed of such power and Goebbels is happily and proudly watching it all from Nazi Hell.
And speaking of Fidel and Cuba, why don't we just drop the stupid embargo and let good ol' capitalism introduce democracry to Cuba? Hey, worked in the ex-Soviet Union, Vietnam and China so why not Cuba? Yeah, I know it's a stretch to call them democratic but I speak in relative terms.

Tell ya what I think A. Luthor...

    by morGoth

...the CIA's activites in Chile were done in the context of the Cold War. See my post way up about how things get justified (for good or ill) during war, cold or not. Not saying what the US did in Chile was morally right, in the absolute sense, but it was yet another example of collateral damage during the execution of a war. By comparison, would you call for Chuck Yeager to go on trail for war crimes? He mentions an episode in his first book where he and his wingman were ordered to strafe a column of French civilians just to clear a road for advancing Allied troops. Absolutely horrible and disgusting but that sort of thing just comes with warfare. I'm quite sure some of those surviving civilians hate the US to this day as a result but I hope they see that we helped drive the greater evil, Nazi troops, out of their country. I despise what we did in Chile and I won't try to rationalize or excuse it away but would you rather be living under the tender mercies of the U.S.S.R. today or still enjoying freedom? Tough call, yes? Though I daresay I know what most Chileans would answer...a very bad choice on the part of the US.

The original communism as conceived by Marx and Engels did not have any leadership. However, it was Lenin who came up with the idea of Vanguard Communism, namely, a ruling class dedicated to proletarian values. In theory, after the working class is enlightened, the vanguard can die away. Oddly enough, that has never happened. You should check out that link I posted. Every communist regime in history, without exception, has been an absolute disaster for humanity. Why? You can be sure it is not because Marxism is some benign ideology. It is real twisted stuff. People need to be clearer on what communism is. I don't know if this movie does glorify Che and Castro, but no average person would accept a movie that glorified or treating Nazism as acceptable, why do people consider communist things acceptable? As bad as fascism is, Communists have killed far far more people than Nazis. Another interesting note: talkbackers above have said that communism is not much worse than other types of ideologies. There have been brutal, authoritarian regimes that have reformed and moved towards a normal democracy, the KMT in Taiwan is an example. However, never has a communist regime ever done this. Communist regimes have only ever lost power when they collapse and the sooner the better.

Your point has little to do with Communism as most of the brutal communist regimes replaced more brutal fascist/capitalist regimes. For example, no one who knows anything would argue the Sandanistas were worse than the Somoza regime. Also, What Bush is doing in Iraq is worse than anything Che did. Just because he does it through beaurocracy and proxy does not mean otherwise. As pointe dout elsewhere a truly Marxist regime would be much more democratic than anything we have ever had in America. I don't agree with Marx's ideology on purely economic terms, but it is no more prone to totalitarianism than other Western ideologies.

Unlike yourself I actually keep track of global news not anti-American hyperbol. By the way, Reagan knew economics and how the world works better than anyone. He knew the Star Wars program didn't work and couldn't work during his adminstration. Recently released documents reveal that it was a plan to scare and ultimately bankrupt the Soviet Union. Guess what? It worked! We spent quite a bit on Star Wars, but the Russians spent many times more on upgrading their outdated military to compensate for the US threat from space. No more COLD WAR. By the way again... Reagan based his "Reganonics" programs on economics policies started by JFK. Kennedy was a huge tax cuts guy! You guys are pretty smart you just have a one sided view of reality. Seriously.

Left and Right alike crapping brimstone!

    by Jesus of Suburbia

As soon as I saw the headline, I knew the Talkback would devolve in this way. People condemn Che for supporting a brutal dictatorship that torments its people, forgetting that what he helped supplant was a brutal dictatorship that tormented its people WITH AMERICA'S BLESSINGS AND MONEY! I wonder who will respond in an outraged-blind fury at that?

    by seppukudkurosawa

You know, other than use every talkback as an excuse to pick his fellow talkbackers to pieces, rather than comment on the subject at hand?

You are outraged that we chose the lesser evil? Get a clue when it comes to foreign policy. We allied with the USSR in WW2 and Iraq in the early 1980's. You can't expect us to only ally with perfect and pure foreign powers; we would have no allies. Look past your idealism

O&A much? At least you have decent taste.
FWIW, I mentioned Nugent and Miller, WHILE EXPLAINING how they would be used against me. As explained for reasons IN THE SAME POST you replied to, they are the only ones that you were intent to focus on. Again, thanks for making the case for me. There are many more conservatives in the entertainment industry. Why should I bore everyone reading this with facts that can easily be googled? Why? Because it is so much more easy FOR YOU to divert the subject to a tangential. You are such the textbook definitive liberal. All high and mighty. Ready to claim victory.
Even here you are diverting the topic from where it originally was focused. Why talk about anything that ultimatley matters when we can instead blather about how many conservatives there are in the entertainment industry as well as how many tickets can be sold at the local fair they may figuratively be featered at.
You quibble about your own subjective skills of Miller and Nugent. Meanwhile, my son is a skilled carpenter, non-unioned, and can't find a job because of the illegal infiltratiuon. And you seek solace in a trial lawyer, or a WalMart board member, or an islamic school child?
...?
At least I can lay my head to rest easily each night. Yeah, even with the incredible huck.

There is a Left Wing In the US

The only have political power in certain urban areas and and in the judiciary. The major political candidates aren't radical lefties, as such--most are classical liberals or populists (though hardly center right). But who cares, this is a fucking movie sight.

Obama will be our next president. Mark my words.
