Cloverfield could possibly be my favorite film of recent times. Then again it could suck, but unlike the rest of these mooks I'm giving it a chance. I'll be there when it opens in Aus, which by the way is on the 17th, which with time differences is actually MORE than a day earlier than the States, so we'll probably be the first to review it.

The campaign is a great exercise in marketing but I'm sick of it already and have no intention of seeing the movie. My prediction is this is going to be another "Snakes on a Plane" -- lots of internet hype, dismal ticket sales.

I don't know about you but in a movie like this you have to root for someone even if that person does die in the end like the Wicker Man for instance. Since we know the chief characters are going to die who is there to root for unless you're a sick individual and just want to see this monster eat people and destroy things. It was truly fucked up marketing but I gaurantee you we won't see them make that mistake again.

I don't know about you, but if I was sitting down to a monster movie, I'd want the monster to win. In fact, even if it was set in Dublin (where I'm typing from) I'd still want it to win! I'd even give it a list of people I'd want it to f***ing exterminate! It's been a long time since we've seen an apocalyptic ending in an American movie and I don't mean that as an offensive thing. It's different so why not? -

That was one hell of a monster movie, especially because what made it good wasn't even the monster but the family. And by the way I loved that facetious post in the VvAvP:R TB.

Put it totally out of our minds for the next almost 3 weeks, and that'll give it the best chance of having a real impact on us as possibly a good film. Because just given the mounds of hype it's had with it for so long, that's the way to go. Enough already with the preamble. Just quit it, or give us the whole thing.

The great thing about THE HOST is that it really is all about the family; thats what makes it so unique and special. The characters are likable and you actually really feel for them. I got a little choked up myself at one point. But then again its also very funny and very scary. Its like they took an indie drama/comedy about a fragmented family, and smooshed it together with a really scary / tense / suspenseful giant monster movie; resulting in a wildly entertaining, surprisingly smart, cool, emotional movie thats much better than it may seem to at surface value.
This CLOVERFIELD thing looks pretty cool, no doubt, but I don't see it besting THE HOST. For one, I'm already completely annoyed by those who I assume are the main characters. But, again, you never know how it will come out. It could be really great/cool/smart and surprise us all. -

It's weird, all they have to do is put a few extra snippets in and it seems "new." This entire campaign flies in the face of modern advertising in many ways (compare the COLVERFIELD trailers to nearly every film trailer in the past 20 years...you know, the ones that show you everything). I'm a big fan of the comics and Tom Jane really grew on me. Punisher 1 (2004) was heavily flawed for story reasons and because John Travolta just wasn't right in it. Now the second one is trying to start it off again with a new Punisher and it's starting to look a bit messy for the Punisher franchise. Bad tastes are forming already in peoples mouths... -

this movie, but the ads (and the people in them) make me hate it. I got psyched to see Host but the dull weight of the anti-American metaphors balanced out the good parts of the family dynamic and there just wasn't enough monster so that one ended with a solid meh. I get the same sort of vibe from this thing; to much time invested in "Real World" type hipster love lives--not enough monster.

If Bad Robot and paramount came out and said our movie is about X. IF paramount showed the monster from day one ie only cut to trailers that gave the movie away people would saying" thanks a funking bunch paramount thanks, for ruining the movie fuckers" instead they kept schtum and we had to work out what the hell was going on. some people Hate that type of thing. I think they want to know everything about the movie straightaway. it gives them a reason not to go. But its not just cloverfield, the same this will happen over and over, during the rest of the year. I loved the indy gags by the way. and of course I will be there on opening day for that film. I am really excited about this summer and I have a feeling this one is gonna rock. I cant wait to See cloverfield. I am dying to find what is all about.

it's more or less the same. except a couple new shots, like a girl saying, what the hell is that?! this one also ends with a zoom in on a ship buring and headless statue of liberty, and the male lead saying, people are gonna wanna know how it went down.

Hype has always existed since Hollywoods inception. Its a bit too late in the day to start complaining about hype. Hype is used to pull people into things. Like the star of a Us Sitcom who who makes his or her debut in the west end or JK using it to kick off the publicity for her new book. or john Wayne using his name to promote the bomb that was the alamo to make sure that oscar voters took note and acted accordingly. I dont know where all this anti hype stuff is coming from. maybe its just another aspect of the movie business that some are using as a punching bag.

you might be on to something. The same people who produce lost are involved and its written by Drew goddard. It has been reported widely that the slusho reference is from Alias. SO that begs the question is there a tenous link between alias, lost and Cloverfield. I think there is a week between this movie and lost returning to our screens. but In the UK lost doesnt return to uk tv untill feb. and you dont see the monster in lost either. intriguing. American studios dont really give a shit about the rest of the world. They think New York is the world, but there is a wider world outside the US. Not that american studios give a shit. really. That is why NYC will get blown up. The studios believe that NYC is the world.

I liked Host, but there is no way it was scary. It's was a good monster movie and the family angle was great.
Cloverfield... I am looking forward, I hope it is cool. I'd even accept an updated version Godzilla-type moster movie. My home run would be that this movie ties in with Lost and that this is actually happening in New York while our intrepid castaways are trying to get off the island. Or at least some kind of parallel universe that was affected some how. -
It is being written by comic book artist called Kang. Takes place three years before the original events of the first movie took place. There are going to more monsters in this. So says Dark horizons.com

Was it really six months ago that I gave a crap about this movie? Ah, those were good times, but for some reason I didn't really think opening day would arrive. I'll be studying for the bar anyway and won't get to see it :-)

But I think the more I know about a flick, (behind the scenes, outtakes) it becomes a bit less of a movie experience. It might be fun, however it's also amazing how upest people on here can become over not seeing it yet. Get a date, go out on a Friday and see a flick and disect it AFTER you've viewed. And if Cloverfield sucks, well, then hey, there's alot of good movies out. No Country rocked.

is 1 hr 30 mins long. Doesnt seem to me like there is much to this movie. except lots of death and destruction. I thought that people here would like that. but i was wrong. ie a movie with lots of action and no story.

on page 60. on one side of a door you see Robert Hawkins and his girlfirend beth and she looks infected with what appear to be claw marks on her upper arms. it looks like they trying to barricade themselves into room after being chased by something and you can see that somethings eye on the bottom left of the page.

that something looks an outer door handle. but Rob and beth both look panicked and she looks she was attacked by one of the medium sized monsters. Rob is trying to push a very heavy door closed and to stop them both from being attacked.
