Wait a minute... who's in STAR TREK now? The dude in the dress?

Published at:  Dec 30, 2007 4:06:01 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This is a notoriously slow news time... but the good people at UGO have a nice juicy rumor that I have to share.

Their source has a line on an actor, his character and a very interesting situation in which we'll meet this particular person. If you're worried about spoilers and want to keep it all a big surprise, then you might want to skip over this next bit.

Oddly enough, the rumor is that Tyler Perry will appear in JJ Abrams' STAR TREK. Out of left field, right? I know when I think of STAR TREK I think of Tyler Perry.

He'll be playing a man this time out and, according to UGO's source, he'll be the head of the Starfleet Academy. He filmed a scene recently with Spock and Kirk... apparently he's displeased with Kirk over the rigging of a certain test... Thaaatttt's right. If UGO's source has it right (and I don't doubt them) Kobayashi Maru will be dealt with in the prequel. I would describe it for those that don't know, but if you don't know what Kobayashi Maru is then Netflix WRATH OF KHAN...

Pretty neat, huh? That gets my geek up a bit... Don't know what to think about Perry... I honestly don't know enough about Perry's work to have strong feelings on it one way or the other, but I can say I like the scenario we'll see him in. What do you folks think?

unfortunately this movie seems to be just that. I was giving this whole prequel concept the benefit of the doubt, but casting Tyler Perry (!) and a bunch of smoldering soap opera stars is a bad sign. man, kirstie alley was super foxy in wrath of khan, as a side note. especially in the lift when her hair was down. I can't believe she got so fat. Her and kelly lebrock.

Dealing with the ramifications Kirk faces after rigging his K.M. test is very smart idea.

As was the suspiciously strategic "leaking" of this information. The film still has another year before release; but now it will be a year in which Trek geeks the world over begin anticipating the release, rather than decrying J.J.'s Trek 90210 casting choices. A very strategic leak indeed.

There is no way, EVER, that I will watch Starfleet Academy 90210. Who gives a toss abou a bunch of ensigns (no matter their names) running around, whining about girlfriends, grades, or the Dean putting them on double-secret probation? This will be akin to the dreaded Wesley Crusher episodes that were strewn about Star Trek: TNG. I'm forced to agree with Jack Colby: the references are overblown and lazy. Ah well, I stopped really caring about Trek after All Good Things...

    by prof. pop-cult

Perry is an actor, and he's been cast to play a small role. It's probably just for one scene, essentially a cameo -- like Christian Slater's appearance in ST-VI. It's stunt casting but I can more easily imagine Perry fitting into the Trek universe more so than Slater.

This may be inoffensive casting but still, how do we know that there won't be more - maybe JJ can throw in a Baldwin brother or a cameo by the Olsen Twins. I keed I keed, but still... Tyler Perry? This is a mite Gay'tarded. I'd prefer it if the New Trek didn't take the Rob Zombie Halloween path onboard as a template for its casting decisions (Oh look, isn't that Dee Wallace!). Not that I have any say in the casting anyway... ho-hum. Happy New Year talkbackers! (a tad early but I'll be flouncing about who knows where when the time comes).

STAR TREK Jumped The Shark When It Became Respectable

    by laserpants

Cmon, you all know that the best elements of Star Trek were the original super campy shows. When it started getting all serious and respectable and well written and well acted, it fell off. I mean, dang! Patrick Stewart is a respected Shakespearean actor! He's too good for Star Trek. Now Shatner, Shatner with his barely competent overblown method acting is what Star Trek is all about. Bruce Campbell should be the new Kirk -- he is much better suited to the role than Matt Damon. (It is Matt Damon, right?)
On the Tyler Perry thing... I'll accept it only if he dresses in drag and acts like a raging stereotype of a cantankerous old black lady. Perhaps the crew will reverse the power couplings and go back in time and crash into Tyler Perry's latest awful movieverse causing much slapstick, eye bug outs, and Perry's barely contained raging closet homosexuality.

You're obviously young. The camp only came later with age. And that is part of the charm of ST however it has always had it's serious side. It became respectable in the first year. The fact people still like to see Shatner chew up the scenery doesn't make the whole show campy. It became extremely respectable with " The Wrath Of Khan ". People also like to watch the over acting in that one as well " Khannnnnnnnnnnn! " just had to say it. However if you think that made the whole show campy you've missed the point entirely.

35 years young! Don't think I missed the point -- I know they were trying to be serious. The sad fact being that trying to be serious often results in unintentional hilarity -- the true strength of the original shows. When every week the crew has to visit whatever set is available -- western, 1930s gangster, et al -- you can't take it too seriously or you look silly. THE NEXT GENERATION was the first time it seemed like it wasn't a joke to me. I suppose the movies were meant to be serious too, but theres no way to get past the implicit humor of the cast and their universally bad method acting.

MARK my words this guy will do a good job... Yes I saw Diaries of a Mad Black Women had some decent parts and performances in it. Some parts were even funny. Of course the movie had the whole overdone racial stereotype thing going for it, but it actually wasn't that lazy just done pretty well(hated the inspirational music montage that every single African-American movie has lol, time to move forward please).... Oprah influence got my ex's mom to rent the movie so there you go( watching it was an extreme example of compromise). ANYWAYYSS, Tyler Perry seems like a pretty intelligent dude as well as a decent actor that I think will fit perfectly into the universe....It's a small role anyways, and I really don't know why you guys are hating on this movie so much. It seems to be shaping up pretty well.

The last ST series attempted to channel classic Trek, and look how that worked out. Remember when they mentioned the Clone Wars in Star Wars - and then years later they showed you the Clone Wars in the prequels? How many people here imagined something a million times cooler than what we saw? Sometimes it's nice to just drop little bits of info like that and then let the audience make up their own story behind it - you don't need to go back and show/explain everything in detail. If they wanted to return to classic Trek, they should have done a movie set in the same time period but on a different ship.
And hey, Jack Colby - don't ask for original content, because that's how you end up with stuff like "Voyager"...
    Haha! J/K! (not really)

    by grammaton cleric binks

and it was pretty good. I started to watch Madea's Family Reunion, and turned it off after ten minutes or so. Thing is you know that if a white writer producer director made that movie the NAACP would bea all over them. Stereotypes are only funny, and only allowed, if they're done by the race in question. Didn't hate reunion for any racism or stereotypes, just thought it stunk. First five minutes or so and some dude makes a special spa/bath morning for his fiancee after its hinted he beat the hell out of her the night before. So he's got musicians, bath attendants in their bathroom, and he disrobes her in front of them, and she slips into the tub. Boy, talk about geek fantasy that ain't even close to real life. Oh Tyler Perry can act, even without the makeup although he thinks he's a better actor in it. Maybe I'll rent another one, but Family Reunion just soured my taste. I would like to see Perry in another role just so I can see him in roles he didn't create himself.

    Unfortunatly they couldn't do a DS9 movie

    by i dunno

Way too much back story. Bajor, the occupation, the prophets, the wormhole...it's all too much. The only time there could have been a DS9 movie was Star Trek 9. It could have been about the Dominion War, instead of whatever the hell Star Trek 9 was about. It could have focused on the war and it wouldn't have been as necessary to introduce all the rest of the DS9 mythology. They could have made a kick ass Star Wars-type action movie before the prequels ever came out and it would have killed. At the same time they could have introduced the DS9 and maybe even the Voyager crew so they'd have somewhere to go with future movies. BUT NO! Here we are with Kirk and Spock. The only DS9-type movie that could work is a movie about Section 31. That would have been kick ass if done right. Think '24' meets Trek.

Trek has become so ridiculously PC, it's, er, ridiculous. Just to re-iterate, ANY time Pichard was contacted by some admiral to get orders, it was always a Female, and if it was a male, he was always Black. When the Admiral turned was white, they were either incompetent or had a hidden evil agenda. And that doesn't just go for Trek, it can go for just about any medium, and it is getting frustrating to constantly see this because in the real world, it ain't like that. That isn't racism, that's reality.

IMHO, this scene has always been a great off-camera moment. I hope bringing it on screen isn't Star Trek's version of midichlorians - then again - Star Trek has done plenty to sell out their own franchise in advance. I'm just nervous about anything that will make this reboot of the ST universe even worse than what it became of Berman and co.

    "Tyler Perry audience"-- bull

    by mgmax

"What does this mean for Trek? It means that "JJ Abrams just bought himself Perrys loyal army of followers. And that means a nice chunk of the black demographic, a demographic not counted on for movies like Trek." Obviously you don't know that the audience for sci-fi always skews more heavily black, that's why there was Lando Calrissian, black power Klingons in the newer Trek series, Pluto Nash, and so on. Adding Tyler Perry doesn't add anything that Trek didn't already have-- a strong black following.

You went from Lando Calrissian to Pluto Nash?!?! I don't think much of anyone from any race saw Pluto Nash. As for Star Trek, I don't think it's crazy to think having Tyler Perry in the new movie will attract that stars specific audience. The series was running tired for everyone including the single white male nerd. Perry just doesn't have the "black demographic", but more so the 30-40 year old women and their daughters who are usually black that go see his goofy family comedies demographic. That's an audience Star Trek never had and casting Perry could help. Who knows? I guess it's interesting none the less.

    Angry Black Man aka MRX67

    by smackfu

You're letting your Angry Black Man stereotypical personality cloud what Angry Mike is getting at. There IS a noticeable level of PC-ness in Hollywood and TV, where casting and story decisions are BASED ON RACE which is the essence of racism, is it not? A non-black example of it would be how in the past 6 years, every single tv show (ahem 24) that features an apparent terrorist attack by middle eastern terrorists, by the end it turns out that it was really evil white industrialists, or some former soviet sect that was behind it. Even that HBO series, Sleeper Cell featured a muslim terrorist group, that consisted of like 1 actual Arab, and the rest were all white, russian, french and black. Which is perfectly normal right? I mean you see terrorist bombings every day on CNN being perpetrated by Al Qaeda sells consisting of white guys, french guys, and black guys, right? You see the producers/writers don't want to be accused or perceived of being racist, so they always make the terrorists turn out to be a 'safe' ethnic group, by 'safe' I mean one that won't raise a big stink about it. There is no white irish lobby that is going to picket Fox because the bomber turned out to be an ex-IRA guy, so they go that route. It's the same with minorities in power in tv and movies. No one is saying 'white people should only be shown in power' on tv and movies, we're saying that it's peculiar and blantantly obvious PC casting, where execs are making casting decisions around racial quotas. It's the same on reality shows, every one has the exact same cast. In every reality show there must be: an equal ratio of blacks to whites, or failing that, there must be more blacks than whites. Because if there are more whites than blacks, that's racist. So there must be equal, or less white people present as compared to blacks. Also an equal ratio of women to men. There can be more women than men, but not more men than women. Because that would be sexist. There must be at least 2 asians, preferably Chinese but Koreans will do in a pinch. There must be at least one gay guy, one mom-ish middle-aged woman, and at least one grizzled old man, the kookier the better.
The point Mike and I are trying to make, which I'm sure will be lost on you, is that the very steps that Hollywood takes to make sure something doesn't appear racist, are based on race and are inherently racist. Not that any one race should be consistently prevailant, but that the decisions should not be made using this stupid, PC race quota. I would be just as refreshed if I turned on Survivor one year and saw that there were like 9 asians and 3 or 4 whites or blacks. Or all blacks, or all whites, something that would indicate that the casting was based on the people who applied, and not a check-sheet of racial quotas to maintain some kind of weird PC-equilibrium with all races equally represented.

    by mrx67

I don't know what reality shows you've been watching, but all I ever see are the token blacks. The shows you named all had token blacks (only Survivor had two). Let's break it down...Okay we know survivor had two, big brother had one, the amazing race two (which technically counts has one since they were eliminated together.) Need I go on? If there is PC in casting then I sure as hell don't see it. And if there is a quoto then someone should tell NBC, CBS,and ABC because not one of those damn networks have a minority in a starring role. Oh we got co-stars, but no starring roles.

Awhile back a sit-com came on the air called South Central. It was about a struggling single black mother trying to raise a family in South Central. That show was nixed because of ratings. Now let's see, the majority of the Nielson family (those folks who decide for you and me what we watch) are white. Of course they aren't going to relate to a show like South Central just like all of you can't relate to Tyler Perry. Thank God for cable who don't adhere to the racist Nielson Company.

Hollywood is full of left-wing nutjobs who worship at the PC altar... this is news?

As for Perry, he's getting a bit part of no plot significance. It's like casting M as a woman in James Bond. You have to keep the whiny libs happy so the movie crew will get invited to the parties.

If the movie sucks it won't be because of him. I'm confident that he can play soldier for his 5 minutes of screen time. Maybe he's always been a closet trekker and wanted to get in a film, who knows?

Harry knows his audience and if you bothered to read his post you can see he got them revved up by stating 'that gouy in the dress'. Attention talkbackers

    by systemsbroom

The term "politically correct" or "PC" was coined by right-wing radio host types as a straw man to help demonize a whole slew of behaviors that are otherwise pretty uncontroversial. There is no "PC agenda" or altar of PC-ness, as some random talkbacker above referred to. Just a realization, often driven by pragmatic business sense or just plain human decency, that it's a nice idea to try to avoid needlessly offending people. As for the news du jour regarding this star trek prequel thingy, my hunch is that Mr. Perry can neither help nor hurt this movie. It stands or (more likely) falls on its premise alone.

    by deejay

Harkening back to the Christian Slater cameo and considering Nichelle Nichols "history" with Gene Roddenberry, Perry’s minor role is likely to be a step forward. Not only does Perry bring-in experience playing multiple characters (via make-up) in one movie, his presence provides an interesting challenge to the science vs. faith argument that is sometimes raised in relation to works of science fiction. Still, JJ Abrams probably isn't likely to be "Golden Compass-ed," so it’s not unreasonable to consider the possibility of studio executives having crunched data that reveals many of Perry's fans to have an interest in sci-fi. While that may sound astounding to AICN posters who grasp onto an inane image of the Perry audience as a monolithic and sequacious cluster of African Americans, it actually wouldn't be surprising to anyone halfway informed. This discussion has been entertaining, though. Beyond the bad jokes, I’ve read posters like Angry Mike *slander* logic (by contradicting himself with his overuse of the term "always”) and Austistic License *emotionally abuse* data interpretation (you should change your handle to Regression Analysis, braniac). Smackfu… you do realize that it’s already silly to have so many humans in charge of an intergalactic Federation (which is propaganda at its best) and that a quick view of world demographics exposes the main shortcomings of Star Trek casting as the historic under-representation of Asians and overrepresentation of whites, don’t you? One might view Star Trek casting as being too “PC” if they believed the village of the future looked like an extrapolation of them and their drinkin’ buddies, though. Like it or not, folks, MRX67 brings up some valid points. Question; did Abrams' casting of Winona Ryder generate an entire thread on AICN?

Dude I can understand your anger against the talkbackers here, but honestly these forums are never pro/con black, white or any other race. Even JJ Abrams faced the wrath of the talkbackers when he penned the Superman script that had Luthor as a kryptonian, Krypton never blew up and a whole bunch of other funky shit that may have been better than Superman Returns. Remember when Harry "released the hounds" at one of his signings and soon after pulled his articles then bashed the talkbackers? Now that was some good times.... No actor/director/producer of any color is safe from the talkbacks. so what they make fun of perry, so what they make fun of him in a dress, so what they make fun of his films, tomorrow we can get a JLA announcement and this thread will be forgotten until a solid trailer comes out. Lots of people/films have been bashed in these talkbacks and a lot of their bashing was moot because a lot of films went on to success (Transformers 2007, i don't care what anyone says it kicked ass).

First... despite its utter silliness, I also enjoyed "Transformers." From a logistics standpoint, I think the movie was a wonder of filmmaking. That said, I hearken back to my question as to whether there was an entire talkback geared towards Winona Ryder being cast in this very same film. Ultimately, the issue isn't whether a man in a dress is a funny image... it's why Perry (who is to be in how many scenes?) having a minor part in this movie is seen as significant enough to be the source of an entire talkback on AICN. The concern is not with how people respond to the question, but why this particular question was raised in lieu of any related to the other performers tied to this project (most of whom will play a more significant role). How would you explain this?

... is that Abrams did this simply to aggravate people like Johnypannic. An added benefit would be to get the Johnypanics out there to reveal their true colors. I am certain there was a talkback on Wynona being cast. Anyone who was cast for this film had a talkback about them. There have been countless talkbacks based on actors/actresses either having major or supporting roles. Have you been reading AICN since the incarnation of star trek 11 was strewn about? As I recall most of the talkbackers wanted the series laid to rest for awhile and come back fresh. As I recall JJ was bashed for even thinking of a reboot. So don't try to make reason for this particular talkback, white/black/hispanic/asian actors and actresses have all faced talkback wrath so don't take this particular talkback to heart just because Tyler Perry is black. If any black actor needed saving from a bashing you should stand up for Michael Clark Duncan when he was cast as Kingpin. Nuff said.

Varakor... unfortunately, I've been around AICN for somewhere near a decade and, unfortunately, this entire exchange is nothing new. Still, how can you be so mendacious to claim that this talkback has nothing to do with race after you’ve lauded a comment where someone *specifically* besmirches "black people" in this discussion? If you have a moment, please re-read my posts. Before this response, *my* only reference to African Americans was saying that Perry's audience wasn't a monolithic Black group. The people who’ve insisted on making this a race issue, it would seem, are the very people (Angry Mike, Autistic License and Johnnypanic) you're defending by inference. While your civility is appreciated and you seem like a good person, your defense of their behavior only brings you to their level. Xiphos... okay, then where are the links to the Winona Ryder and Eric Bana-specific talkbacks? Perhaps they had "witty" titles that make them a challenge to find in the archives?

But if us Trekkie nerds have anything to worry about the casting of this movie its...Karl Urban. The more I've thought about that casting the more I realize its a horrible choice. I mean Bones is either kind of a background character or its a Spock/Kirk/Bones adventure. Hopefully JJ doesn't make Bones one of the main stars. I mean Karl Urban was good in LOTR and Bourne, if you even knew he was in those movies? I didn't. The guy is the most forgettable actor of recent.

Who are being cast for the major roles, Kirk, Spock, Mccoy? It seems to me for this to work, those roles would require big name actors, who can act. Otherwise, this will be tough to pull off. The original cast had almost perfect chemistry, never duplicated in the modern start trek series, probably because they never came up with better characters, and a better mix of characters.

So what? Tyler Perry is gettin ripped on? get over it dude. as I've said previously this will be old news in a day or 2 and someone new will be the brunt of insults. As for finding a specific link about Bana and Ryder, I'm with Xiphos it's been done and he doesn't have to show you specifics links because again by your own words you've been here nearly 10 years and you've seen worst. Let the Tyler thing go and throw out some jokes of your own. You wanna rip on a white actor, asian actor, hispanic actor. then go for it because if you don't someone else will.

    by laserpants

Umm, sweetheart, I didn't accuse anyone of racism for disliking Tyler Perry. I think he sucks too, but reckon he's competent enough to rattle off whatever 11th hour deus ex machina contrivance saves the crew from their latest transgression of the prime directive.
If you read my post, and, more importantly, understood it, you would discern that I made the comment in regards to Angry Mike's misplaced anger, delusion of oppression, hilariously disturbing white male angst, and sense of unease in regards to the fact that Star Trek dares to feature people of colour and women in roles of authority. The implied idea of a truly equitable future between all races and genders really freaking out present day racist angry white guy types who inexplicably see themselves as oppressed even though they still maintain the clear edge in the social order. Understand?
But then again, I get the sense that your not the type of guy who reads all that much; to say nothing of the whole crucial comprehension aspect. So, good luck! Have a great New Years Eve! Yay!

    by the founder

Serioulsy WHITE PEOPLE YOU NEED TO STOP IT. First off Perry's cameo isn't going to make his so called demographic of black people go and see Trek. Not all black people go and see Tyler Perry flicks. Infact the demographic is thought to be black women, but truth is it's both black, spanish and white women. Some guys, mainly black will see a Perry film due to their girlfriend, but not so much on they own. Also believe it or not black people who go and see Trek are fans of the universe and the ones who aren't go because they are going with a fan who happens to be black. If it were true that blacks go and see films due to some black star being cast then 50 Cent's pathetic flick wouldn't have tanked. White people know this, Black people go and see films for the same reasons you guys do. If it interests us, much like you people, then we'll see it. Yeah some films are geared toward a black audience, and it pays off in some cases, but in truth we black folk are a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, and with different tastes in music, art, culture, films and so forth. Just don't insult us by thinking that we all think in some monolithic fashion. STOP THINKING THAT WE ARE THE BORG.

Varakor... as neither you nor Xiphos has been able to produce any evidence to support your claims of "equity," I'll take your last post as a tacit admission that no equivalent talkback exists for Eric Bana nor Winona Ryder. With that said, the question remains as to why Perry warrants such special treatment for a bit part. As far as my being dissapointed goes, I think the old JLU talkbacks were some of the more insightful ones that I've seen. This one, however, hasn't so much had "commentary" as its had bad jokes and convoluted logic (with a few doses of reason here and there). The one bit of saving grace was the mini-thread about the Kobayashi Maru test, though. Never mind the fact that it seemed to occur by mistake. Angry Mike... I'll take your last post as a "yes" to my hornet's nest question, as I don't think it possible for you to be unaware of your contradictions. Whatever the case, Happy New Year, fellow AICN posters!

True bana's not so bad but Winona get's pretty ripped on. Now as to the question as to why Perry deserves the abuse? The man is famous for playing an old black woman and now he's appearing in a star trek film, which to geekdom is like walking on hallowed grounds. If it were Rupaul, Liberace (god rest is gay ass soul), Nathan Lane, or any other countless gay/transvestite men of any color were announced for a film on AICN they would get the bajeebies bashed out of them, especially if it's a geek film. Do you actually equate talkbacks headlined by "Learn Who Eric Bana Plays in STAR TREK XI!!" and "Pon Farr, Pon Schmarr!! Learn Who Plays Spock’s Hot Mom in STAR TREK!!" with one labeled "Wait a minute... who's in STAR TREK now? The dude in the dress?" The very titles take are radically different. As an aside, your characterization of Perry being famous for "playing an old Black woman" is not entirely accurate but *is* straight from the headline of this chat. It's also rather counter-intuitive, as many Star Trek actors were made famous for making themselves up with pointy ears, ridges on their forehead, nose prosthetics and other fairly outlandish characters. Your pseudo-elitism is not too unlike that of the prior Hollywood types who essentially dismissed Sci-Fi acting as the gutter of the industry. As an aside, your post omitted a couple of other options for people in this online community. One can accept foolishness at AICN (which you cited), leave (which you cited), countenance it (the way you did with JohnyPanic's racial insult) or express a different point of view. I've chosen the forth option, and it would seem appropriate. Especially when one considers its consistency with one of the *overarching points* made throughout the Star Trek universe. After all, rational people can--- and do--- change. That's why people made resolutions that were to begin today. Best wishes in '08.

Yea I'm gonna end it here

    by varakor

Because I think you missed the point entirely. It's not about the title of the article; the discussion is based on how the talkbackers "responded" to the article, because by the title alone you have no idea whose being talked about. You know how many guys are famous for wearing dresses? now if he said "that black guy who wears a dress" yea that kinda narrows down the playing field, but it's still pretty broad. (Flip Wilson was famous for wearing a dress, may his soul rest in peace) So Quint chose to use the words "The guy in a dress" and it just happens to be about Tyler Perry who is infact famous for wearing a dress in his plays and movies as Madea. Yes he's a playwright, producer, director etc but If Perry died TODAY, photos and video of Madea would be everywhere. That's who he is famous for and I'm sure even he knows it. What I ultimately did was give you proof that (once again and say it with me folks) "No actor/actress/dirctor/producer etc are safe from the blows of talkback insults. NO ONE!" (Uwe Boll is the daily punching bag around AICN, how's about defending that guy?) You can't say "oh it's the title that pissed me off" when you know in fact it was the comments left about the article. Now if your gonna take personal offense to what was said, something that's done almost daily here at AICN, then dude that's an issue you have to deal with. Nothin's gonna change around here and you'll see that as other casting announcements are made for this and other films. As for the Johnnypanic's joke, hey it was funny as hell. I laughed, i have friends who laughed... it was funny. Nuff said. If you wanna point out what an anonymous talkbacker said, whom you know nothing of his race, gender, or if he's a neo nazi or a black panther, then you may as well toss in Dave Chapelle and his Tyrone Biggums for lovin crack, Chris rock and his joke comparing Krispy Kreme donuts to crack, and Rick James and his "Coccaine is a hell of a drug" comment. Let's not stop there, we can toss in the hilarious "Friday" and the abundant weed smokin all about. It's not throughout the entire film, but it's there. Or Undercover Brother (Another classic I might add) which has a black character called 'the Colonel" who, not by choice, opens a chicken joint and has a special called the "nappy meal" which comes with... a forty! (40 oz beer to those who don't know). Black people make fun of themselves why can't anyone else? Oh that's right it wasn't so much what he said it was more about me commenting afterwards. Ha! I don't care, it was still funny as hell. So with that i'm done.

    FOUNDER...

    by seniorspeilbergio

I think you hit it on the head. I still don't think that's why he was cast. Everyone here is just assuming that. Trek already has a "built in audience" (in fact, I think the term was first used to describe Treks box office viability) so I don't know why these guys are assuming that's why he was cast. I think he got in there for the same reason most recognizable actors show up in Star Trek: they're huge fans and beg the filmmakers to stick them in there somewhere. You know, like Bryan Singer, Christian Slater, Whoopi Goldberg etc. I think (don't know for sure, just think) the real problem here is that JJ didn't have the balls to say, "hey, glad you're as big a fan as I am but I think your presence in the movie will be too distracting to the audience". But that's just my opinion. I've never been a fan of stunt casting on Trek. And the thing is, it has nothing to do with whether or not I like the actors in question. Imagine if George Lucas did that in the Star Wars prequels (I know, they sucked enough as it is) and we all had to watch Brad Pitt play Obi Wan Kenobi. I mean, I think he's a terrific actor but I don't need to see him with a lightsaber, you know? Neither do I need to see this guy in a starfleet uniform. When I see a starfleet officer in a Trek film I want to believe he's a starfleet officer and nothing more. Not "that guy who is synonymous with playing a character in drag".

Varakor, Please Try To Stay On Target

    by deejay

Let me point out that I never claimed that any individual was insult-proof on AICN. While I recognize that you're offering the stock defense used by your drinkin' buddies, it simply doesn't apply to anything that I've written. You continue trying to redirect the discussion in new directions, and this at least implies you're uncomfortable with some of the arguments that others have made in this discussion. As an aside, when Mania.com covered this story, they used a photo of Perry that's consistent with the majority of press shots of the guy. You may be amazed that, in it, he dressed as the guy he is, and not one of his fictitious characters. My prior post was consistent with the notion that there exists no equivalent AICN talkback that--- from its very first sentence--- was designed to rip-up one of the next Star Trek's bit players. While you fail to see how your very theory for why Perry would be assumed a safe target on AICN actually validates the majority of people who've criticized *former* Star Trek performers (which, in turn, invalidates the entire argument), I'll leave that be. Additionally, your piss-poor analogies--- which you openly admit incorporate incompatible sample populations--- will also be left alone. Why you continue to characterize my emotional state as "mad" or "upset" is beyond me, but your question/comment, "Black people make fun of themselves why can't anyone else?" is *more* than telling. Let's extrapolate that logic, shall we? The man down the street sleeps with his wife, so why can't anyone else? All types of people keep getting bundles of money from that bank, so why can't I go in and get some? That's the logic of a 5-year-old, fellow poster... and the same type of logic you're employing. After all, if this is what AICN was about, then what value would any of its talkbacks have?

You truly MUST be ignorant. Don't you get the fact that being racial-centric is to be racist? Mencia said it best: When you hear, "Black power", you think power to the people, right? When you hear, "White power", tell me you don't automatically think about Nazis, the KKK, burning crosses, etc.The fact is that people like you are the ones who perpetuate racism. If it wasn't for people like me and my race, blacks would have been persecuted on a larger scale in America, and many wouldn't have ever made it to Canada on the Underground Railroad. Which was mostly white people too, btw. Perhaps it's because my family has had so much involvement in this issue that I feel so strongly about these ingrates who keep the hate going under the guise of intellect. Quit trying to hide behind your false sense of pride and read your very own people's history so that you can get your head out of your ass and realize that the only enemy is ignorance and denial. First the entire discussion started because one talkbacker was upset that tyler perry was being made fun of, which i pointed out (with examples) that he's not the only one and i have stuck with that statement since. You from your OWN comment soon after asked "whether there was an entire talkback geared towards Winona Ryder being cast in this very same film." And you even asked for links, all of which had nothing to do with the title. (your words and you can scroll up) and i gave you proof that there was, with talkback insults intact. THEN you complained it was the title (((Do you actually equate talkbacks headlined by "Learn Who Eric Bana Plays in STAR TREK XI!!" and "Pon Farr, Pon Schmarr!! Learn Who Plays Spock’s Hot Mom in STAR TREK!!" with one labeled "Wait a minute... who's in STAR TREK now? The dude in the dress?" The very titles take are radically different.))) I didn't disagree with that, but i replied that from the title alone quint could have been talking about any number of guys who are famous for wearing a dress. So by answering your questions and sticking to my original statement, how is it that now i am the who is redirecting the discussion? Nice try trying to make it appear that way. But go back to my original statement to MRX67 then read what i've been saying there after. Thanks for the discussion its been fun, i know you're upset by all this but don't worry it will pass and we'll be making fun of the G I Joe cast in no time.

All This Over a "Bit" Part in a Movie

    by deejay

Before you provided links, I was very clear in asking for "similar" Winona Ryder or Eric Bana specific talkbacks. Do you at least agree that, while each cast member has been lampooned on AICN, not all Star Trek cast members have been attacked with the same degree of malice? Just look at the words of posters such as Angry Mike, JohnyPanic and CharlesUlyssess. One has implied Perry's casting is a part of a grand anti-white male Star Trek conspiracy, another has levied a wholesale attack on Black people, and another has somehow managed to inject the Underground Railroad into this discussion. Were each of the white Star Trek performers *routinely* criticized here on AICN based on their race, gender or cultural background? Are these criticisms complemented by disrespectful “jokes” about topics such as the Irish Potato Famine or the domestic abuse of women? We both know the answer… but a more salient question would be “why is that?” For the record, I don’t think anyone believes that Black performers are beyond reproach. Some of us just don’t think it’s valid--- or “cool”--- to attack them simply for being Black. We also find it strange that some here at AICN attempt to take stories about Black performers and use them as opportunities to attack an entire community of people. We’ve both read the comments during this discussion, and both know what they mean. Whether or not people like the methods used, posters such as MRX67 and the Founder both had the courage to raise the issue. Trying to dismiss them by saying “everyone” gets ripped-on here at AICN, however, is a convenient attempt to change the subject and *avoid* the issue. I’ve long viewed AICN consisting largely of creative types and die-hard genre fans that pride themselves on shooting straight. This has been one of those discussions that paints an entirely different picture of our crown, though.

... and the last sentence should have "crowd" instead of "crown" in it.

Not the biggest Tyler Perry fan however...

Why Did I Get Married wasn't half bad and he is getting better as an actor. He won't mess up and his part is liable to be very minor.

Just to insert my 2 cents here for one moment, the guy who played spock has been repeatedly slammed for his sexual orientation (wrongfully, I might add), so prejudice or prejudicial humor isn't solely restricted to black people and/or tyler perry. I think the main problem that started this whole mess is the fact that this "bit part" as you term it (which is a bit disingenuous-turns out Perry is the Dean/head admiral our to get Kirk) is obviously stunt casting--something that sends out warning bells to old fogies, such as myself , that dislike it when the mtv crowd is courted, trek nerds who dislike ruined "continuity" and the current, saved-by-the-bell approach, and, of course, prejudiced people who love to goad everyone else. Of course, I'm also leaving out those who are seemingly unable to discern honest criticism from biggotry, but hey, the night is long.

MoonDoggy... I agree with you contention that AICN slams are not exclusive to African Americans. It would also take a fool to believe that the slams are evenly distributed. Still, that doesn't change the point you made. On a different note, I don't see how you'd view the phrase "bit part" as disingenuous (it isn't as if I claimed he was an extra or would simply be making a cameo). However, if you think Perry will have more than six lines (the threshold listed on Wikipedia) in the finished product, please provide further info. I actually don't know how many scenes or lines he'll have once the movie is released. Finally, I'm also not sure how you can so easily label this as "stunt casting." Also by Wikipedia's definition, stunt casting involves putting "stars" in "bit parts." This would make your prior post contradict itself, as it couldn’t be stunt casting if this isn’t a bit part. Perhaps you're using a different definition than what's already out there, and perhaps the problem rest with the subjectivity in how many people have use these terms?

    JD Lawrence vs Tyler Perry

    by freepresslady

JD Lawrence Urban Theater’s New King of Dramedy
    By Gale Marano
DETROIT, Feb. 9 – Urban theater mania returned this weekend to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. Despite the inclement weather African American theatergoers attended the four-day performance of the hit stage play Rumors. Also in attendance for the first time, Caucasian patrons came out in groups to witness JD Lawrence the man frequent patrons of the genre, staff and media are calling Urban Theater's New King of Dramedy. Rumors has to be one of the few productions that consistently started and ended on time said one staff member at the Music Hall. The two hour and ten minute performance was cleverly written, unpredictable, entertaining, hysterical and ethnicity free. A winning combination that has not been witness on this circuit before. The show-starred Family Matters Darius McCrary and Telma Hopkins from Half and Half. Also added to the mix is platinum recording artist Leytoya Luckett who sings like an angel the songs, Torn and How Do You Love Someone. Written and directed by actor/comedian and singer JD Lawrence. The New York Telly Award winner and lead character or should I say character’s, played an eye popping five characters (Mr. Clarence the show’s narrator, Ms. Mary the usher from hell, Sunshine the outrageous chef, Ashad the Indian landlord and Rev. Dollar). George Smitt and his wife Denna from Detroit said they didn’t even realize until after the performance that Lawrence was the same person playing all five parts on stage in full costumes throughout the night. "They were all different from scene to scene the way they talked, walked and sang. It was like watching Eddie Murphy in the Klumps live" said Evelyn Rivers. The show-stopper of the evening was a hilarious duet between JD Lawrence as Sunshine and Leytoya Luckett as Michelle singing Bad, Bad, Bad that left the audience falling out of there seats. Several staff members and patrons at the music hall said so many plays come and they’re all predictable, there all the same mostly trying to be like Tyler Perry of course, but falling short. Mr. Lawrence genuinely has his own style of comedy and definitely a place in the hearts of Detroit and Toledo theatergoer’s black and white. Dale Murray from 94.1 who had a walk on cameo said "JD Lawrence's Rumors is the must see stage play of the year! Filled with thought provoking dialogue and witty one-liners the show has more twists and turns than the German autobahn. While oftentimes compared to Tyler Perry, JD Lawrence is a writer/director/actor and singer with his own voice". The show also stars comedian George Wilborn and Gary Owens in a hilarious bird fight scene not to be missed.
