just hasn't lived up to its pilot. I really want to love it but it's wearing thin already, only watched up to ep 6, have others downloaded and ready to roll just don't really care that much. So 30 Rock is good? I watched the pilot last year and found it so horribly forced. improved then? Maybe I'll give it another chance.

It's almost as bad as Californication in the dialog department. But, yes, Weeds and Brotherhood are wonderful, as is Pushing Daisies and Mad Men.

I love Tina Fey and Baldwin, but I just can't get behind this show, and people seem to be astounded by it now. Maybe it's because I'm bitter over Studio 60 still. And Dexter may ahve questionable acting, but the overall plot this season was fantastic, and one of the overall best seasons of a show I've seen in a while, and Hall's acting was fucking wonderful when he's on the phone, contemplating killing the guy who killed his mother, as well as when he's freaking out in the cabin (not with Doakes). Also glad to see Dirty Sexy Money on some lists, as they've been doing some pretty good work, but I just like how so frequently on the show, the relationships and roles each character plays are drastically changed.

CW fucking with the format for the last season did hurt them, but they still had some fantastic episodes, particularly the resolution to the rape arc. I need to give the 3rd season a second viewing I think.

Granted, a lot of the shows on these lists (Sopranos, Mad Men, Lost, etc.) are better shows, but they are consistently funny and well written, and they've tried a lot of different, more adult things in their latest season. I'm not surprised to see the lack of praise when considering the current TV landscape, but it'd be nice is all.

Their finale for 2007, The Platinum Rule was one of their better episodes. Flashbacks within flashbacks that didn't confuse the viewer and everyone's timing was pitch-perfect. A most underrated show.

the show was my #1 for the year too, so it's nice to see some critics share my thoughts. (incidentally, the wire topped both ew lists last year, and was my favorite of '06 too) i'd love to see things like this this translate to more viewers (ditto for that best comedy emmy), but i worry the show will go the way of Arrested Development sooner rather than later.

the whole aftermath with Ted and Robin I think is being handled very well (especially in the Thanksgiving episode), and is having pangs of Jerry/Elaine as opposed to Ross/Rachel. Also, are you aware that Rob Thomas had a second meeting with DC about a season 4 VM comic, which basically he said IS going to happen, as long as the WGA doesn't have a problem with him writing a comic that is based on a network property?

Or are you just fucking stupid? Also - fuck anyone who doesn't have Flight of the Conchords at the top of their list - they are fucking stupid too. The best piece of acting I saw on TV all year was when Jermaine was denying that he was a bit gay after singing a song to Bret which admitted that he put a wig on him and imagined he was a woman. "This is another of your weird songs Jermaine", "In what way?" Perfect.

I understand the argument you're making, but in your example, at least in my opinion, it doesn't work. I never was a big fan of Earl, and it seemed like people were just giving it support and saying it was "edgey" because Jason Lee was involved. I'd say it's as good as "Yes, Dear", however, in it's first season, I did see that it had a number of writing staff from Arrested Development, Sports Night, and Andy Richter Controls the Universe, so I gave it a shot, but I don't think they did anything nearly as good as they had in the past. My opinion not withstanding, I do respect their change of moving it to a prison this season (that is what they did, right?). I always appreciate it when a show tries a huge creative leap like that.

Probably to grown-up for the likes of the AICN crowd, but it was a great show. Also, I keep waiting for Earl to NOT be funny, but it just doesn't happen. 7/22 ep's of Lost were spectacular. And HIMYM is the funniest network show, edging slightly 30 Rock, though the single fnniest thign I've seen all year in any medium was Alec Baldwin protraying Tracey Morgan's entire family in a therapy session.

is that Baldwin scene online anywhere? I wouldn't mind checking it out. Also, the first book that the first season of Dexter was based on is much, much worse than the show. I was so surprised to find that the novel actually had less detail than the show did. They made a ton of creative changes, all for the better.

any pull, but based on what Thomas has been saying, it seems as if whether this comic happens or not is dependent upon their approval. I'm sure they don't control it, it seems like more of an issue of Thomas not wanting to piss them off .

I'm the wrong person to comment on it, but I will. I know very little about it, but I heard it was the folow up show that he people behind Sealab 2021 were doing. I was a big Sealab fan, so I checked it out. I've only seen the first episode, but I enjoyed it. Still fairly non sequitor like the majority of the Adult Swim stuff, and not as good as say Home Movies or Venture Bros., but not bad. From what I gathered, it's about a super villain named Killface who's trying to take over the world or something to that extent. I'm sure someone who's seen more than just the pilot could give you a better idea.

I hope Cartoon Network didn't give up on FD already. Sealab was funnier than Aqua Teen at a time when ATHF got all the attention, and now this new series from the same creative team seems to have been put on hiatus midway through the second season. I love the way it relies so heavily on its dense continuity as the basis for the humor in the show, yet how in one episode the direction of the plot can shift drastically. If you give it a chance from the beginning and watch them all within a short span of time it really is a great little show.

I agree. That Baldwin scene at the group therapy had me staring at the TV with my mouth agape. It was just brilliant. Sadly I am surprised to see no critic love for Milf Island.

The rest of the first season is great, you should check it out on bittorrent or something if you can. I think they're putting out a DVD early next year, but for now you can probably only find it online. Season 2 starts off in a completely unexpected place and goes off in a new direction entirely... it's pretty cool, but they only showed half of them and then stopped airing episodes.

And I apologize if I stretched the talkback out, but I very seldom post links here. Baldwin is great in it, and his Tracy Morgan is spot on, but I think this is a good example of a clip of why I don't like this show. Baldwin is terrific, and I like bits and pieces of the show, but Morgan's reaction afterwards is just too much. I know the type of character he's supposed to be playing, and the purpose of the group therapy, but he wouldn't actually believe that Baldwin has BECOME his father. -
What kind of idiots would do the things the characters in Dexter do? It's a show for kids whose parents won't take them to see real R-rated movies yet. Oh, and whoever said the dialogue is terrible was right about that too. Is anyone really surprised Dexter and Californication didn't make the critics' lists?

I agree with the comments made here regarding the first two episodes, and the characters were pretty thin. By the end of the season though, I was really enjoying it and actually gave a shit about the characters. The second last episode was particularly good. I might be in the minority here, but I thought the show definitely improved a lot, and found its footing by the end. And yeah, the creator's previous credit is on Dawson's Creek. I don't give a fuck. The writer of the Fantastic Four movies co-created Twin Peaks. Shit happens.

There are a ton more great shows out there that i like, but like i said this is just a top 10 list.
Shows Like Reaper, and Burn Notice, and Chuch, and Life. Just to name a few more. The rateings aside this had to have been one of the toughest seasons for my TiVo. And after january I am going to have to find room for the Terminator series and some other new shows that look like they are going to be really good.

The recent Christmas episode was a classic. I fear it will flame out soon, it is too good to last. I was glad when Arrested Development went away because it was starting to show signs of strain. I have the same fear for 30 Rock.

I love Deadwood, the Wire, the Sopranos, VM, Lost, etc. Just to show that I really cherish quality writing. How is Dexter poorly written? And for those making this argument, what the hell on TV is written well, if Dexter is a pile of dogshit? If you say Criminal Minds, I will mentally tear off your balls. And try to make the argument the Michael C. Hall is not a pure genius; your credibility will go out the window. He has perfectly encapsulated the psychopath.

Basically, you who say it was written by the people who created Charmed took ONE of the many writers of Dexter (and who hasn't even written very many episodes) who was also a writer on Charmed, and claimed this writer is directly responsible for both shows. That's some creative freedom right there. You are aware that producing is very different from the creative aspects of the show right? Are you the people who buy it when a commercial claims "from the people who brought you..."? If you can't tell the difference in quality between Dexter and Charmed, you probably want to find another site to frequent, cause you clearly have no idea about what makes TV or movies work.

I can't take anyone seriously who claims to have watched an episode of DEXTER and thinks that the writing is anything but excellent. The acting is great - particularly Michael C. Hall (hence his nomination) - and the plot is constantly twisting in unexpected directions, where Dexter is always one step ahead of the audience. Behind LOST, it's the best show on television. Why it isn't receiving more love on these lists is incomprehensible to me, but then, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSES JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD was hardly recognized on year-end lists either, and that film was fantastic. You can't please everyone, but people who bash DEXTER either don't watch much television, or have very poor taste. It really is that simple.

but my one complaint is that the pacing can be too damn slow at times, especially when it comes to character development. I wanna see more ruthness and cunning from Micheal and have him climb higher within the ranks of the Irish Mafia. The cliffhanger was lame with the exception of Tommy's "confession" to his brother. And the skank he was banging is FUGLY, Blake (Masters) need to cast better looking chicks for the next season.Other than that Issacs stood out as he would have made a great live action Punisher. (based on Marvel's MAX comics.) Speaking of live action adaptations, WTF happened to that planned HBO series based on DC's Preacher?I guess after the flop that was Ghost Rider, HBO nixed Mark Steven Johnson's project.

I haven't seen anything and it's possible I just missed it but does anyone know when Andy Barker will be released on DVD. I spent a Sat last winter watching those eps on NBC.com I think when they put them up before the premire episode, Great stuff, in my opinon anyways. See here's the deal with the "Top 10" lists, it's all subject to someone's opinonlike me, I know I'm not a critic (well not a TV critic) but if I made a top 10 list I couldn't put Weeds or Dexter or Flight or The Wire on there because I don't have HBO or Showtime and therefore can't watch them, if I was to make a top 5 list I would have to put on LOST, Andy Barker, The Office, BSG, 30 Rock

I thought all of those shows were either just mind blowing in their greatness, or they have some very good growth potential. There are some shows that just grow and get better over time, not every show out there can be like Heroes, or Lost. Some Shows just build slowly and with some good writers (Lets all hope the Writers Strike ends soon) and some really great shows. They can have some really great series. Everyone in the entertainment industry is looking for the breakout hit that grabs all the ratings. I look at what is good, could be better, but will grow into it. Which I feel really allows the viewer to grow and invest in the characters.

no, no there wasn't any sarcasm. I really liked Flash Gordon. I think it is really good, and has the potential of being a great show. I would admit there have been a few weak eps, but over all it has been a very good show. I mean take the Dresden Files that was on Sci-FI. I thought it was really good, and I have read all the books. I feel that was another show that could have grown into a great show, if it had been given some more time to do so.

DEXTER is one of the best shows on tv right now. Period. There has been no other show like it, so I can't see how someone can criticize the writing. If you said you didn't like the show because of the premise, I could give that to you. But to say the writing sucks is ridiculous. Lock yourself in a room for a year and you won't come up with anything near as complex as the first season, and nothing near as great as the second season. -

I watched Damages, and I felt that they may have over used the formula that they used with The Sheild and with Nip/Tuck which are both fantastic shows. I would also say the same with The Riches. They have gone to the well one to many times. but that is just my opinion.

I thought that was a fantastic show but it never seemed to get as much of a push as the way subpar "Dirt" on FX.
I also agree that Dexter was probably snubbed a little too much by some of these magazines. -
I ageee with other posters that South Park needed more love this year. Trey and Matt were definately back in form compared to the previous season. Furthermore, I think we'll see more animation on the list next year as these critics are finally seeing it's a valid medium on television AND since Venture Bros will be back for another couple seasons (unencumbered by WGA concerns, I might add).

Anyone heard anything official on whether Brotherhood has been picked up for a third season? If it's not renewed, I'm officially canceling my Showtime subscription. I've been hooked on that show since the first ep, and it's the only show on TV I MAKE time to watch - sorry in addition to LOST, which cannot come back on air soon enough. Recording is not an option for either show! Don't know why all the hate for Dexter. It may not be a masterpiece, but it doesn't suck. Michael Hall is adorably creepy.

In order for these critics' lists to have any credibility...

...they need to retroactively adjust their previous years' lists to put the first 4 seasons at the top of their lists or they shouldn't be allowed to compile "best of" lists at all. Actually, none of these shows even belong on the same list as The Wire. Comparing it to something like Dexter or CSI (seriously, CSI being on this list is itself enough to invalidate it completely) is like comparing Jaws to Anaconda. Seriously, there's TV, there's HBO, and then there's The Wire.

CSI had a renaissance last season; the Miniature Killer storyline was compelling as well as the fate of Sara and her eventual departure from the show. The clones of it can fade away in the next instant and TV would be better for it. The original, in this case, was and is the best of the CSI's. It retook Grey's Anatomy out to the ratings woodshed. That alone is enough to give kudos to it. But The Wire's catch phrase this season, "Read between the lines" is pretty much pitch-perfect.

They got screwed did rte. never produce a sensationalist program if you cant back up the claims. This summer a person that hardly anybobdy in Irish journalism called justine Delany wilson did to rte what andrew gilligan did to the bbc. She produce a shoddy book called High Society in which she had on record a catalouge of people who took drugs. these included a nun, an aer lingus pilot, a barrister, an irish court judge and former govt minister. Then along came the tv program and all hell broke loose. this was a drama documentary, so actors were brought into play the various characters in her book. Justine delaney wilson says that she destroyed the digitised recording of the poltician(the irish govt minister was dropped and an irish politician called robert was inserted). Justine Delaney wilson went to new zealand and is not coming back. Rte had its internal inquiry. Rte said that it will not be releasing that report to the public.The best line came from Matt Cooper who when questioning the RTE's Chairperson Mary Finan said that they had outsourced their reputation. When questioned about this they said they stood over the program which they said was true. Rte came out and said that they looked justine delaney wilson in the eye and told her they believed her story. they did no background checks, they did no rigourous editorial analysis of the program before they aired it. now they are screwed. Cecelia Aherne dad is in the shit in Ireland. When he was minister for finance he had no bank accountant. yet you have to sympathise with him because he couldnt divorce his then wife miriam, cecila's mother. Kidding! (This concept of rational, non caps talkback is an exciting new concept) For me, CSI makes the 60's Batman show look like a police documentary, but I suppose there's room for both (and more) on the TV schedule. I just can't take much network TV seriously anymore. Seriously.

I watch Flash Gordan and find it entertaining in an odd sort of "what the hell was that" way, but I just can't figure out any way to rank it among the best shows of the year. I mean even the original was deliberately bad (at least I hope that's what they were going for) in a comedic way. But I do completely agree with you about Dresden, I loved that show and wish it had gotten a better shot.

Take note, NBC: stop trying to shove this minor cult "figure" (defimnitely not an icon) down our throats. Hiring her as co-host of an SNL-Christmas special? Jesus. Monitor this weekly chestnut: Fey has not been on the show for 2-3 years or whatever. Take note: 30 ROCK isn't low-rated, it's practically invisible.

...is just further proof of how dead the sitcom is right now. Baldwin would be funny reading the phone book, and quite frankly would be FUNNIER reading the phone book than having to deliver some of the gawd-awful lines he's given on that show. And he's the only entertaining thing about it.

1.The Wire(they didn't have a season this year but the top spot is still held for them)
2. Lost(Specifically the last two thirds of the season. As far a great season finales go, no other show touched them)
3. Flight of the Conchords(I think I spelled it wrong but still it was a great show and very unique)
4. Dexter(I just like this show. Fuck the haters)
5. The Sopranos(I actually loved the ending)
6. Always Sunny...(Great show. You got to watch it just for Charlie and DeVito)
7. Veronica Mars(Guilty pleasure. And I don't feel guilty about it.)
8. No Country for Old Men(Wait...what list is this for again)
9. Prison Break(Huff some glue, smoke a joint, and turn on this show. You will at least be entertained)
10. 30 Rock(This show is great at times and brilliant at others. It's no Arrested Development, but it'll do.) -

I love that show! I like 30 Rock to, it has really grown into a funny show. BSG is great. I also LOVE Top Gear on BBC. I kinda dig Chuck and Reaper as well. Heroes has lost the magic it had last year...Its turning into 90120 with mutants.

to DEXTER haters. my second job is manager at a blockbuster store. ive gotten more people hooked on that show than i can count. going on my recomendation, most people watch the first season in a single day and come back singing its praises. some have even gone so far as ordering showtime just to see the 2nd season! it is that addictive. if you give it a chance, and not just passively watch an episode and say "its crap", you will be hooked too. the show is brilliant. great writing, great acting, and twist upon twist to make you NEED to see what happens next. if you dont like DEXTER, you've only seen one episode passively while wasting your time trolling the internet or looking at porn. season 2 was the best television i have ever seen...... oh, and FUCK "Lost". stop finding more people already, it's not called "Found". may they all be eaten by GALACTUS. The little woman and I have been calling Life the best new show on TV and we've converted a lot of people to believe it too. Of course, then we saw Yo Gabba Gabba and it almost took the title. (Seriously -- it's hard to beat Biz Markie teaching the littlies to beat box.)

That show is pure joy. I love that show so much. Too bad the Season 1 DVD was so barebones. Oh well, as long as season 2 is in the works.

The absence of Dexter is weak, but Frisky Dingo is a great addition. It's a little non-sequitur-y but next to the Venture Bros. it's by far the best thing AS has going.
