About that screening of STAR WARS EPISODE 1 at CANNES...
Hey folks, here's where the technology gets showed off first. Personally I'm curious to see your reaction to this....
I work at a Radio Station in Los Angeles and just received a fax about a
digital screening of Star Wars at the Cannes Film Festival some time
between May 12 and 22. The fax read as follows:
Digital Cinema in Focus at Cannes;
Historic Screenings, Cutting-Edge Product Demos, Conferences
During Film Festival At New High Tech Pavilion, May 12 -- 22
LOS ANGELES, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In an historic first, an
all-digital feature motion picture will screen during the 52nd Cannes
Film Festival 1999, highlighting the theme of Digital Cinema at the
MITIC pavilion (Marche International des Technologies et de l'Innocation
du Cinema).
The Cannes event will pre-figure the digital projection of George
Lucas' "Star Wars" by several weeks, using some of the same technology,
but adding digital compression and satellite delivery to fully
demonstrate the future of motion picture distribution.
A panel discussion on the impact of Digital Cinema on the
distribution and exhibition sectors of the motion picture industry will
be part of the MITIC seminar series. Other seminars include:
-- "Shooting for the Digital Age," featuring top cinematographers
-- "Beyond Rockets and Monsters; Visual Effects to Enhance the Art
of Storytelling"
-- "New Digital Distribution for Cinema Art"
Conferences, screenings and product demos will take place at the
Variety Pavilion, the MITIC Club and theaters in Cannes.

There is more to this fax--mostly discussing the other people and
companies at the festival as well media contact information.
Hope this is of interest,

Maybe I'm a little behind, but last I heard digit screening was of a very poor quality. That they seem to be pushing it before it's ready doesn't seem like a great idea.
-
erm, is it just me but the fax does not at any time say that there will be a screening of that whats his face, thingy, space wars movie doo dah
-
I'm seeing TPM on the 5th of May. Who cares about Cannes?
-
C'mon, it only says that it will be several weeks ahead of the limited digital presentation of Star Wars, not that Star Wars will be digitally screened there. For all it tells us, they could be screening a digital print of Leprechaun. Now, I'd pay to see that.
-
Has anyone heard where/if there will be a digital screening of ep 1 in the New York area? I'm planning to see it straight away, but I wouldn't mind seeing this much lauded digital transmission with a film I care to see. As for the quality, I recall Harry posting an article where someone (maybe even he, who remembers details) saw the process in question, and deemed it good. So I'd like to see it as well, to make the comparison.
-
does anyone know when the phantom menace soundtrack/score is out in the UK?
-
Plan on submitting a review on that screening? Let us know how badly JarJar ruins the movie.
-
Why is everybody dissing Jar Jar like that? I've always thought that Jar Jar kicks ass. He sure as hell seems cool in everything I've seen him in. You guys hear him say like one line, and you go "Aw, fuck it. This guy's annoying!" What the hell?! You haven't even seen the movie yet! But the bad thing is, that even Jar Jar does kick ass, you guys are gonna come out of the theater saying "Jar Jar ruined it." anyway. You've already counted Jar Jar out, so there's no way he's gonna make it for you. Just let go, Luke. You must unlearn what you have learned. Just forget about all your pre-concieved notions. Personally, I think Jar Jar will kick the shit out of Chewie. What the hell did Chewie ever do? He growled and howled every now and then. I don't hate Chewie, but at least Jar Jar talks! And with Obi-Wan's snobby attitude, we have to have some comic relief anyway. Jar Jar provides enough silliness (combined with Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon humor) to round out this Star Wars movie. And I think that Jar Jar looks cool, anyway.
-
...on the dates for the digital presentations of TPM. i really want to see one of them.
-
Is it just me or did anyone else hear that they would not be screening Phantom Menace at Cannes at all, and that Lucas would be test running the new digital format in Texas in June. I heard that in many different sources. Can anyone confirm what I've heard?
-
According to the HMV listings, the soundtrack is out on Monday 3rd May!!!!
Surprisingly early, considering the actual release of TPM is July 16. But who gives a toss, I have -

that whirring clicking sound only a movie projector makes when your sitting in the quiet dark. Room full of people sometimes no one speaks and the screen is silent. Just barely audible in the background, the projector. I'm gonna miss those big, clunky platters I'm gonna miss getting my money back when the film breaks half way through and then still getting to watch the rest of the movie. Digital is coming boys, and nothing will ever be quite the same.
-
Having a passion for cinema-technologies, I've read just about every press release regarding digital cinematography and digital projection. I've witnessed a demo of Texas Instruments much lauded digital light projector a couple years ago. The picture quality and brightness compared to the large projected image was astounding. And that was everyday 720x486 NTSC, definitely nothing special. One of Harry's concubines attended the demo at ShoWest and stated that Hughes/JVC projection system was very flat and ultimately disappointing. However, the Texas Instruments demo was breathtaking. Personally, I cannot wait to see TPM projected digitally. Also, according the Lucasfilm, the digital projected version will incorporate a "special" sound-mix. I'm not sure what that means, but I can't wait to both hear and see it. On another note, I suspect that both Lucasfilm and TI are working on a projection system with much higher specifications (even higher than HDTV's 1080i system). Sony's press release on the digital cameras being developed exclusively for Lucasfilm are encouraging. It's a 24fps camera capturing high-resolution electronic images at 1900x1040 progressive scan (non-interlaced and uncompressed). At first, I thought these numbers a little low. But, when I considered how many generations a traditional 35mm print goes through before it's image finally graces your local cineplex, it's gorgeous resolution is dessimated. With the digital image remaining in tact throughout the post-production process, coupled with the fact that your eyes will be viewing an exact replica of what the camera recorded, the image should (in theory) blow 35mm out of the water. The quality, of course, is dependant on whether or not Texas Instruments or Hughes/JVC can deliver the goods on today's largest screens. This is no small feat I might add. The larger the image is projected, the magnitude of digital artifacts and squarish pixels becomes glaringly evident. Considering that there are a lot of advancements made in line-quadruplers over the last ten years, I think this will probably be a non-issue. But, I will be there, third tow center staring at the picture resolution praying it lives up to the hype. I think the first couple years of digital projection will be marred with many problems. This is no different than the first couple years of digital sound. Remember when the SDDS digital sound would crap out and a horrendous SCREECH would pearce your eardrums; or Dolby Digitals sound would constantly rock back and forth between the digital track and the analog track; or worst yet, T2's Cinema Digital Sound would just stop and there'd be absolute silence while the movie played. These types of issues will definitely arise with the first introductions to digital projection. We have to keep one thing in mind: digital artifacts and hiccups are no different the broken film splices, dirt and hair in the gate and worst yet, an overprinted, washed out grainy print.
-
Now, I'll admit that the first time I saw Jar Jar in the first trailer back in November I thought the same thing a lot of you did. He looked like a dipshit cartoon. The more I started to think about the whole scenario of a Puff the Magic Dragon kind of appearance to the movie the more it pissed me off. Then I thought of one thing. When you first saw Yoda, what did you think? You thought "That's a fucking muppet." And now we look at Yoda and think "That's a fucking muppet," the thing is we don't care anymore. Give Jar Jar a chance.

The music in PHANTOM is gonna be the same as STAR WARS so only morons are gonna waste money on the new soundtrack!Isn't LUCAS rich enough already you moneywasters!. As for digital,LUCAS Knows PHANTOM lives & dies by the ACTION & SFX, thats why he's so obsessed with picture quality. This is gonna be the most ACTION PACKED movie yet,so only the SFX and action matters. The storyline is the same as JEDI,SO FORGET storylines. The POD RACE,SPACE BATTLE & GUNGAN/BATTLEDROID SCENES are the most important.Storylines & characters are for GIRLS!!!!!. MOVIES are for ACTION,BOOKS are for stupid STORYLINES!!!!!!!!!!!

Although I don't know exactly what theaters will have the digital projectors, I DO know that 4 theater is NYC will be installing this. This is the only place in the entire fucking world!!! I cant wait. Also, EP1 will be shown in the digital theaters roughly a month or two after the inital release. -

Hey Bombay!! How are you? I was ind of wondering if you have heard the music from The Phantom Menace..Cause I have heard one full track..Duel of the Fates which you can get through me (members.xoom.com/darth_maul69/)
And I think it is very different than the original trilogy and I like it better than some of the original stuff...As for Jar Jar complainers..Who cares? He's a cartoon and George wanted him that way so who are we to argue...Now if he is as annoying as Robin in Batman & Robin than I could see a reason for getting rid of him but let's just wait till the movie comes out. Then we can have real honest opinions of Jar Jar, music and the storyline... -
VIOLET, PHANTOM is a STAR WARS movie,so that means STAR WARS music.ALL the other movies in the trilogy had the same music,so will this.SAVE YOUR MONEY!,it's a con.EVEN the movie is gonna be a remake of JEDI.The beginning is gonna be a rescue mission, the ending is gonna be a spacebattle, lightsabre duel and groundwar. All this happens in JEDI!But who cares,as long as the ACTION & SFX rock,we'll all be happy.Remmember ALL the biggest hits of the 90's have been ACTION SFX movies!Storylines & characters are for boring idiots like SCORSESE! he's got no movies in the top 20 list and he never will have!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Everybody' knows the STAR WARS music ,so who cares,it's not gonna be nothing new. Also LUCAS did an interview in the NY TIMES where he said STAR WARS waS popular cos of emotion, who the hells he kidding, and if he's right why has he made PHANTOM the most action SFX packed movie of all time.He knows full well, without action STAR WARS is the same as SESAME STREET.LUCAS is obsessed with SFX & Action. Why do you think BLADERUNNER was a critical and B.O. flop, there was hardly any action innit, that's why it's the most BORING sci fi movie ever made.Don't be fooled by LUCAS'S lies,he knows if there WAS NO action in PHANTOM,no way will it be a hit.

First of all thank you Alderaan for the very informative post about digital projection. I found it very interesting. And as for Bombay, take it easy on him folks. He was injured in an accident much like Phineas Gage, although in Bombay's case I think it involved a toilet, a plunger and a match. But in any case Bombay's accident severed most of his cerebral cortex from his brainstem. The only part still connected is his Broca's Area, the part which controls the speech muscles. He must have someone else type his random verbage for him.

I've heard rumours that Lucas has relinquished and allowed advance tix. While I am against the idea of someone dialing a number and getting tickets, I figure if you can't beat them you better fuckin' join em, at least if ya wanna see Star Wars while it's still the 20th Century. Here's the rub, and the rub is this: the theatres in my area are all tight-lipped (and tight-assed, for that matter) about Star Wars. They won't say nada. Does anyone know when Lucas will allow tix to go on sale? Or is it a theater decision? Who makes the rules here? If there is any benevolent soul out there with answers, I would really 'preciate. Thanks.
-
This has nothing to do with this topic, but I had to ask this. I missed Harry on Siskel and Ebert and I was wondering if anybody happened to tape it. I would gladly buy a copy of the show from a fellow AICN fan. Please e-mail me if you're in the know.

I agree with Foster about Bombay's unfortunate accident. And Yos
by violet fire
Yeah Foster, Bombay must be the result of all that stuff...By the way Bombay, maybe you should go look at #15 of the AFI's 100 Greatest List..I believe that it reads Star Wars. If I am wrong please correct me...And if I had more time on my hands I would look for more lists that it is on but I am sure that you could do that.
Um does anyone out there have the Naboo theme Mp3? I've been trying like the dickens to find it but it is not to be found...Please direct me to a URL...
And about advance tix..I work at a movie theater and as far as I know it is in the end up to the owners and managers if the theater sells advance tix or not...I'm pretty sure most will. -
Tickets go on sale May 12th at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time, limit 12 per person, L8ter.
-
Lucas has said that they will allow advance ticket sales starting May 12th. They specify that there can only be 12 tickets sold per person. They also said that after the 12th, Theatres will be able to implement thier own advance ticket policy (meaning when they will start selling them) I have heard that some theater chains are planning to only allow ticket sales 2 days in advance. The theaters I have spoken with will not announce plans until May 1st. So you should call them then for details.
-
Almost forgot, stupid people: Shut up until you see the movie for yourself. George is pretty good about telling a story with as little extra fluff as possible. I am sure Jar Jar will have his own needed place in the story or he wouldn't be there. He is supposed to be the Chewbacca type character of this tilogy. I have to admit, I would think that character type would be better played by an alien with no human speech (like Chewbacca) but then again, I am not the one making this movie, and I have no idea how he will fit into the film. If this is really bothering you, make your own Star Wars movie and do what you want. But do not make money off it or you will be sued I am sure.

Most people here like to complain about jar jar becauses he's totally cgi. Personally I find that complaint a bit wrong, because cgi is just a tool, same as a foam rubber body suit, or muppet. And all that really matters is what they do with a tool. Look at yoda and the ewoks. They were both muppets, yet yoda was handled in a great fashion and he really came to life and all the fans love him. And the ewoks were those damn cutesy f***ing muppets who were only there to sell more toys. So complaining about jar jar using the fact that he's cgi as your reason is a bit off. Instead, what bothers me about jar jar is how they use him in the movie. To illustrate my point let's use the special editions, remember all that cgi footage that they added of all these different types of animals and living creatures? What did they have them do? They constantly talked, or made moo noises, or growls, or any type of noise, just so audiences would notice them. It was a "look at me! Look at me!" thing that really hurt those additions, if they would've toned that down it would've come across a lot better. Now with jar jar, he seems to have that "Look at me!" thing going on full force. He is constantly talking and never shuts up(if you've read the novelization, which hits stands on about may 3rd, you'd know this) and never seems to calm down and stop bouncing all over the place. Just from watching trailer's a, b, and c(fan made combination of footage shown on the news, available for download at countingdown), you can see jar jar sticks out like a sore thumb because it's like he's on crack all the time and can't stop bouncing around and wigging out, and let's not even discuss his voice 'accent', ok. And you can't blame this on the fact that he's cgi, because watto is cgi and he looks quite excellent in the shots that they've shown. The idea of jar jar is fine, it's the execution that sucks. Kind of like that jedi duel at the end. Come on, admit it, darth maul looks plain f***ing cool, and ewan looks great as a young obi-wan and probably plays it as well as can be played, but just think back to trailer b and the shot of them dueling and seperating to strike one of the most ridiculous poses around. Star wars movies have always had their 'moments', where you could take a shot and make a poster or a lunchbox out of it. But that was sad beyond belief, the poses they struck had no fight value(any martial artist can see this instantly), also it looks just plain silly. And try to explain to me how you can be fighting a guy, a guy who just watched kill your teacher, and you're going to seperate from him and strike a pose instead of continue whacking away at the bastard???? Again the idea is great, it's the execution that is off. Plus, has anyone else noticed how no 'good' jedi's can defeat 'evil' jedi's without turning, however briefly, to the dark side? At the end of star wars obi-wan can't win so he lets vader kill him. During the end duel in empire luke can't defeat vader so he jumps away. At the end of jedi luke gives into his anger and goes nutso at vader and finally whacks off his hand. And now we have phantom menace, where darth maul kills qui-gon jinn, and then obi-wan goes nutso(remember the "noooooo" at the end of trailer b?) and obi-wan gives into his anger and then defeats darth maul. Plus, PLUS, obi-wan was an apprentice in the beginning of menace, yet at the end they make him a jedi knight because of his actions in the conflit(which included defeating a sith). Excuse me, but should the jedi council be quick to promote people who give into the dark side so that they can win a fight????? I'm not even going to get into the midi-chlorian bulls***. I love the original trilogy and believe that it is the best film trilogy ever made, and I hate seeing lucas be a revisionist and screw around with something that was great. Instead of making something on a quality level close to the original star wars(or empire), he's giving us a movie closer to the special editions, where greedo can shoot first and miss at point blank range(guess he hadn't been a bounty hunter very long), and luke can scream like a baby when he jumps from vader, and jaba can have an excrutiating song and dance routine in his palace. I wish I could believe menace will be good, but when everything that comes from official sources is turning out screwed up, it's hard to keep any faith at all.
-
I wholeheartedly agree and what's more, if it's evident that I enjoyed the movie and someone in my party felt disappointed for one reason or another DON'T FUCK WITH MY AFTERGLOW! Keep it to yourself for a while about how this or that didn't make sense, or that was fakey or this was too silly. I'M NEVER GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE THIS THE FIRST TIME AGAIN! My mom may fly in to see it with us and even she will get this same speech - verbatim.

I have read the fucking script, okay. I know Jar Jar's dialogue. This "Please kill Jar Jar" bullshit is sickening. YOU HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THE FUCKING MOVIE!!!!!!!! YOU SEE THE CHARACTER FOR LESS THAN ONE SECOND IN TWO TRAILERS, AND YOU LABEL HIM AS "ANNOYING BABYSHIT"!!!!! What the fuck is wrong with you???!!! The funny thing is, even after you've seen the movie, you'll still think that Jar Jar sucks. You've already labeled him, and he HAS NO CHANCE of survival. Read my next post.

At the end of TPM, Jar Jar is made a general in the Gungan army by Boss Nass. He will definitley be in Episode II and III. Well, I don't think I can assume he will be in Episode III, but he will definitley be in Episode II. By the way, I run a website called "Prequel Spoilers" http://fly.to/prequel-spoilers If ya wanna know the plot, check it out.

For all the people bitching about Jar Jar and Ewoks, *you* need to grow up. Star Wars is a modern fairy tale for kids. A long, long time ago is pretty much another way of saying Once Upon A Time... Star Wars is for the kid in all of us. R2-D2 is damn walking trash can. Yoda is a muppet who sounds exactly like Oscar the Grouch from Seasame Street. But hey, do ALL of us a favor- instead of bitching for hours about the movie, DON'T GO SEE IT.
That way there will be a few fewer people in line to contend with. Go see Wild, Wild West or The Mummy instead, but quit it with all the bitching. It's more annoying than hearing Fran Dresher and Celine Dion singing a duet (shudder). If you want to complain go make your own movie and have it take in $1.8 billion at the box office. Then come back here...because right now none of you dickwads have seen more than 8 minutes of the film, so your little criticisms carry about as much weight as Kate Moss. -
Never happen, baby! No way are they going to screen TPM in Cannes! Maybe some clips of the FX work, but that's about it! Don't be duped into this mass media marketing scam! Alezvou faire futa!

Does anyone know when the CD is going to be released with the new music? Duel of the Fates is pretty cool... it's not the main theme though is it?
-
i listened to duel of fates recently and really liked it. however when listening to it it reminded me more of the kind of music you'd hear in a barbarian type of movie. not necessarily a conan movie, but a movie in that genre. it didn't sound very star wars or sci-fi oriented to me. but i still liked it anyway. anyone have any idea when duel of fates plays during the film?

Duel of the Fates is not even in the movie. It's like a sampler. Taking themes and melodies from the full soundtrack and combining it into a four minute tune. And the "Naboo" music is 100% fake.

Beware this post contains reference to a major spoiler, though not specific, it will ruin something for you..and i'm mad about it too...
Dont know about you guys but i'm just a little miffed Lucas is releasing this soundtrack on tuesday without a warning label. Anyone who reads the listing of the CD's tracks (SEE CDNOW.COM if you want to see for yourself)is alerted to a MAJOR MAJOR PLOT POINT, the demise of a certain character, who most of us guessed was buying the farm from the trailer, but to have it confirmed there right on the back of the ole cd was a little bit of a bummer for me....yes i know mr. williams wrote a lovely piece of score for his funeral, but couldn't they named the track a bit more obscurely than xxx-xxx's funeral?
Makes me MAD! -
Get a life.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was the first time I was really let down at the movies. RETURN OF THE JEDI was the only time I felt as if I had a big, fat "sucker" stamp on my forehead (and I saw HOWARD THE DUCK). The more you try to duplicate the magic of a masterpiece like STAR WARS, the more elusive it will become... and I think I know why. You can't create the universe twice.

This is kind of off topic I know, but I only want to type this once and I figured you'd all come here! I've been spammed by some company called "insight" and this is the only public forum I post to with this e-mail address, those there trawling these talkbacks (it's not only sentators, hollywood execs and the crowned heads of Europe who come here it seems). probably all of you have been bothered by this, so could we petition harry to modify the talkback feature so that we could modify how we want our e-mail address to appear on the page, e.g. and if we want to email each other take out the anti spam line manually. If you haven't been bothered by these arsehole holes yet, add the addresses home_office@insight.com and eCatalog@insight.com to you block sender list before they get around to you. Thanks for your time.

Have any of you downers out there seen the film yet? No, you haven't so keep your opinions to yourselves until you have seen it! Me, I can't wait and we (New Zealand ) get it on June 10! >:-(

I think that page was meant as a joke. If you would actually look at the trailers yourself, there are no hidden ewoks anywhere. Lighten up :-)

I am calling it right now, Qui-Gon is Anakin's father!

One thing we know about Qui-Gon: he's gullible. He was completely taken in by that "immaculate conception" story Anakin's mother told him.
