Aw Crap! HELLBOY 2 trailer goes live!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. A lot of what I saw on my set visit last October has made it into the trailer... my particular favorite being the new Doug Jones creature - The Angel of Death... You'll need to click on him to see the trailer for HELLBOY 2... I really dig the trailer, especially that great monstrocity at the end. Fantastic and a tad cartoony, but still somehow of that world. Enjoy the trailer!

haha suckers
-
Look's good!!
-
really looking forward to this.
-
Especially in japanese manga porn.
-
Loved the lovecraftian like creature at the end. Looks way better than the first.
-
Major motion picture geek-asms.
-
This has me creaming my shorts like a teen in a strip club.
-
...what?
-
You gotta love that guy!
-
tenticles....movie city mayhem...dying...bored.
-
very normal. totally ok. amazingly bleh. reminds me of the Mummy franchise. good but stupid and forgetable. Del Toro is massively overrated. But of course, i am a slave so i will be seeing this
-
Watching people get punched through collapsible walls got old after they did it a few times in the first "Matrix".
-
Hellboy II, The dark Knight, Iron Man, Hulk, Indy 4, Plus what ever else. Geek heaven.
-
Another movie to look forward to. I love the first Hellboy.

Damn aintitcool. Why didn't you tell me. I found by mistake. -
Cool. The first one was entertaining for the most part. But seriously, why hellboy? Isn't there shitloads of better and more original source material out there?
-
what the hell. I'll see it. Get it? Hell? Seriously, '08 might rival summer '82. I'm going to need several changes of pants for all the cine-spooge I'll surely be unleashing.
-
Raimi is good. THIS is the tits.
-
Hellboy will rule, followed by The Dark Knight.
-
dudes punchin stuff part nine. first one was was completely boring.
-
I realize that Pan's Labyrinth was one of Del Toro's most recent (and acclaimed) films, but was it really necessary to cite it at the beginning of this preview? Considering this is a sequel and not a "new endeavor," the need to give the movie "street cred" seems a little silly. On the other hand, if they're trying to entice the art-house crowd, I just don't think this is their kind of movie.
-
Just curious. And where's that Elric movie anyway?
-
Your telling me that after you watched Pan's labyrinth Del Toro is still massively overrated. Did we watch the same movie?
-
holy cripes! HELLBOY returns, with the all too cool Del Toro back back back to the top! I hope there are some scenes with LOBSTER JOHNSON. Hellboy came from the pits of hell, and RON PAUL is going to get this country out of hell, by GETTING RID OF TAXES!!! how? he will close down the fed, close down the IRS, and NO MORE TAXES! thousands of dollars of YOUR money stays in YOUR POCKET! he will end all foreign troop deployment, saving TRILLIONS from the military industrial complex! lets give a big hand for del toro for bringing back HELLBOY, and in 2008, Hellboy is going to dominiate the movies, and i am going to VOTE FOR RON PAUL!
-
...with Delo Toro being massively overrated. I don't think I've seen any film of his I would say is "Good". Jesus, not even well made. They all have a really overlit and colour timed look I seem averse to. It's strange though, I went to visit my dad the other day, who pretty much hates movies in general, and he asked me if I had seen Pan's Labrynth, since he loved it. I may just completely live on a different astral plane to Del Toro and his fans. Should not I'm not obese. Note, all these summer tent pole flicks you are geeking about are sequals, remakes or adaptations. Mostly sequal and remakes. So the coming summer will rival nothing. Thank you.

I enjoyed the first one...I like the looks of this one too
by just pillow talk
And Pan's Labyrinth was a fantastic movie, with what I thought was the perfect ending for what transpired before.
-
it's monstrosity, Quint.
-
Is Hellboy supposed to be the main character this time?
-
Loved the trailer. The first Hellboy was entertaining, but far from perfect. I loved the animated movies that I have seen on Cartoon network, especially Blood and Iron. Now if they can get that kind of a creepy vibe in the movie I'll be thrilled.
-
Fantasy, Action, and Adventure! How we doing on the Sci-Fi front?
-
love the "aw crap" at the end
-
Morn from Star Trek DS9 in the last few seconds there taking a swing at Hellboy?? haha. Looks pretty good. The bad guy sounds like Tom cruise and looks like Jeremy Irons in "The Time Machine".
-
I have high hopes for this one. His best work so far is the amazing 'the devils backbone.'
-
Wow. Your all right. Im 24, when was the last time... 89?
-
sounds like a fun place to hang out.
-
Freaking MySpace is block here at work. Lovely. Remember the good old days when a movie trailer wasn't posted on a social networking site? You know, like the quicktime homepage? And for the record, myspace is for 13 year olds. Grow up kiddies.
-
"From the Director of Pan's Labyrinth." Thought that was a funny touch.
-
Isnt that the UBER MORLOCK?
-
how the hell does Universal greenlight this for a sequel and NOT SERENITY??!?? I'm sure the budgets would be approximately the same.
-
Fracking 1,85:1 sucks.Best aspect ratio will always be 2,35:1
-
but i must admit, that trailer looked pretty damn awesome. can really see some self influence there in the character design....they look like left overs from his last film... and when your last film is pans labyrinth, thats no bad thing.
-
Hopefully this one is much better. Overall scope certainly looks bigger (which I know doesn't automatically equate to better). Still, they have my ticket money. I really like Perlman, and want this movie to be good.
As far as this versus a sequel to Serenity - in all honesty, I'd rather watch the first Hellboy than Serentiy again. I loved Firefly, but the movie wasn't good - it forgot to entertain. -
Just calm down, alright?
-
If you say so, my Lord.

Motoko Kusanagi, heh...
-
Really. marleen@paradiso.be
-
but what was that music? Awful choice for a trailer. This lil' complaint apart, the first Hellboy was fairly decent and I don't see how that one wouldn't be even better.
-
I couldnt count how many creatures were in that trailer. Hes like a songwriter but instead of songs he writes monsters and it looks like he's putting all of them on this album.
-
The orgin story of Hunter Rose is tailor made for the screen, as Matt Wagner has crafted perfect story boards in the form of the graphic novel. Who should direct it, hypothetically? Im thinkin Park Chan Wook of Oldboy/Vengance trilogy fame...
-
Looks like a blast.
-
Seriously, is the general movie-going population really clamoring for a Hellboy sequel? I was underwhelmed by the first one...some nice visuals, but he kept having the same stupid fight with that same stupid hell dog over and over again. In a summer where he's up against Indiana Jones, Batman and Iron Man, I'm not sure people are going to get all that excited about Hellboy.
-
He will get the government out of our lives so that vaccuum of power can be filled by THE PRIVATE SECTOR!! WOO HOO! I'd much rather have WalMart overseeing our schools than the government.
-
...I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of Elric. Is that Luke Goss? Isn't he in this movie? If that's him, he just crept onto a two-entry casting wishlist I haven't thought of since the poster for Clan of the Cave Bear, which gave me visions of a vocally altered Darryl Hanna in the role of Elric. It would have been a weird enough idea to suit the character and his world, I think. And since she just gets more masculine looking with age, she would be even better for the role now. Just a random thought, triggered by the sight of that vampire/albino/Jeremy Irons looking guy, who has to be Luke Goss. He seems like Elric combined with an improvement on Tom Cruise's Lestat. Or maybe how Legolas might have looked if he'd smothered Frodo in his sleep one night and taken the ring for himself. Or not.
-
given the absurd level of Del Toro asskissery on this sight: definately overrated. not his fault though. impossible standard. Pan's was pretty good though.
-
...had a couple of nice performances though, and this looks like more of the same. Not hating, but not loving either.

I demmand a Del Toro movie of "MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS"!

WITH CTHULHU!
-
AICN reviews treated Hellboy as though it were the second coming of Star Wars or something. completely rediculous. it was a good dumb early summer action movie.
-
I am usually bang on with trailer music, I know I know that music, but can't place it.
-
of this movie...
-
Chris Weisz was developing an ELRIC trilogy and so I'll tell you where that Elric movie is... It got flushed down the toilet the moment the opening weekend numbers for THE GOLDEN COMPASS came in.
-
Btw, in that on shot where they're showing Hellboy & Friends; who's the guy wearing the hat on the left? I don't read the comics, and I'm guessing he's probably in them. Just curious.
-
Indeed hellboy. Do better next time Del toro. I know the movie will kick the first one's ass since that shithead Agent Myers is gone though.
-
It sounds like a Rob Dougan, but I can't believe anyone would still use his stuff after the Wachowskis.
-
Whale sized.
-
When it shows Abe, Hellboy, and his woman standing side by side, who is that 4th guy on the left?
-
His visual style and sense of composition and dramatic tastes are his calling card, in the best way possible. I can't wait to see this movie. Hope we get much more Blair in this one than the last.
-
Looks like Forsakyn beat me to the question.
-
The fourth guy is Johann Kraus

Clearly Pan's Labyrinth turned Toro into something phenomenal.
by adrianveidt
The first half of this trailer could easily be seen as directly inspired by the vision and feel of Pan's Labyrinth - this is going to be a much, much greater movie than the first one.

Rob... Rob! Rob. Rob! Rob!!! Rob... It's Hellboy, It's Huge!
by adrianveidt
Just a thought.
-
The 4th guy is Johann Kraus. He was a medium who lost his body. So, he's like a ghost in a suit.
Say what you will about the first movie, but I loved it. The comics are even better, and this film looks like it's even more in line with Mignola's world.
All things considered, I'd rather see a new story than the Joker reinterpretated for hundredeth time. -
Did anyone else notice that they've changed HB's facial prosthetics? From the few lines of dialog we get from him it sounds like he's lost use of his top top lip.
-
OF course... man I frickin love Rammstein, like a German real life Dethklok.
-
Thanks guys. I'm not on top of my Hellboy stuff but I did like the first movie. Kraus seems like a great swap of Agent Myers though. He was trying to cockblock big Red anyways.
Fair trade, right???
Get a ghost, lose a goob. I'm just thinking that if they get more team members, they're more likely to kill one off this time. -
I wonder if we'll get to see the frog men??

WOuldn't that be a latteral move?

Not that that's a bad thing... but it's odd in a cool sort of way. Same white skin, same hair, same posturing. But there's probably more than just that. Neat.
-
I was thinking the same thing on initial peeps. That dude was a wraith.
Where's Colonel Sheppard!!!? -
Cuz I wanted it, and I'll go see it. I really enjoyed the first one.
-
this will win over the non-converts. It does show us some great designs. This is a nice action packed follow up to the thoughtful meditation on mythology that was Pan's Labyrinth. That was a truly wonderful film.
-
Damn. I still wish Del Toro could've gotten to make Blade 3 in between the Hellboy films.
-
Some directors really know how to use the 2:35:1 frame... Like Mr. Scorsese...

I got it free when I purchase my 60 GB PS3 at Fry's Electronics. Also, Casino Royale on Blu-Ray was included as well. Anyway, concerning the Director's Cut of HellBoy, just add in the deleted scenes where needed and presto! You can stop wondering now.

Hey Harry. Your brother is doing a great job with this movie
by ludmir88
fuck yeah!!!
-
second place goes to the Joker maybe.
-
Nice nodNice trailer tooAlmost TOO Del Toro but guess that's no bad thing! Love the music, loved the creatures, Love the look of this way more than Hellboy 1 which just didn't deliver 100%This looks bigger and better with monster knobs on!
-
I was talking about Wal-Mart v The government regarding the running of the educational system.
-
Hey Ludmir, don't get ahead of yourself. We still have Rambo coming up. You know Rambo can't resist one liners. HA!
-
The script is always a key for comic movies. The first one was tight and smacked of realism. From the little I gathered of the second, not as good. Hope I'm wrong.
-
And I found Quint's comments juvenile and offensive and not funny. And I don't even think he's seen the movie. And the camera was too shaky. And anybody who disagrees with me is an idiot who just doesn't get it. And I want my sippy cup.
-
Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but just in case you're not, the director's cut of the first Hellboy IS out on Blu-Ray (looks and sounds damn fine, too).
-
Looks as fantastic as the first one! What a concept, the characters once again actually look the way they do in the comics and still function in a “reality” (over used word to describe a comic book movie) based world.
Pay attention Nolan, your Joker is lame and your Batman is wearing action figure armor.
Del Toro, you rock thanks for delivering again and for not treating comic book readers as suckers.
-
Fry's is a Huge electronics store in the eastern Midwest (see: Indiana). Like a Walmart-sized Radio Shack or Circuit City.
-
What a terrible way to end the trailer. We had one in the lasst film, no need for another. The rest of it looked good though.

Legend of the OverFeind needs to be made live action. That will definitely freak the kidlings out who are psyched about Cloverfield. Possibly change the cinematic landscape of america.
-
It's true, I have no life...

Hellboy was an awesome film. Anyone attacking it is a bitter ass prick. You can't make a Hellboy movie into live action any cooler than these films have, who can complain? They're as faithful as you can get to the comic.

I wonder if he's gonna end up with the hobbit in his lap though...hobbit in the lap.

by godoffireinhell
All in all it seems like they still have no fucking clue how to market this.
-
Mcdonalds!!!
HA!
uuhh no? OK, sorry. -
It certainly had its share of cool scenes but repetitive monster fights (Sameal ad nauseam), origin story shenanigans and fucking Agent Myers ensured that it never rose above mediocrity. Let's hope they got a better and more interesting story this time and will keep the monsters nice and varied.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aAGQ7oh8Ms
-
....no fucking taste whatsoever..if Del Toro isn't one of the best out there and hasn't delivered with previous efforts - then whatever you think has is sure to be total fucking shit.
-
Yeah, don't just write 'Meh' and that's all.
If you're gonna freaking 'meh', back it up with your reasoning why, and all of the people who know the subject at hand will politely school you in why it is not meh. If you think it's 'Meh', then you probably want to go talk about another movie, right? Then go already. -
I liked the first movie, so
i'm interested. Plus, Pan's Labyrinth was flat-out amazing. -
People earlier were talking about GDT's movie The Devils Backbone.
I've never seen it and most are saying it's his best. I pretty much have liked every movie he's put out in the last decade on.
Definitely gotta check it out now. -
And there ain't nothing wrong with that.
-
Um... Yes, I agree that Pan's Labyrinth was troubled, largely because it looked at the Marco years of Spanish fascism through a very foreign lens, but you forget one thing... THE MONSTERS! Pan's Labyrinth is a good movie with men-in-suit, that uses the latex to actually heighten the storytelling. Of all the directors to use monster make-up, has anyone ever used it to such dramatic or seamless effect? THAT'S why people love Del Toro - it's the MAN-IN-SUIT love!
-
Devils Backbone is probably overall his best but Hellboy is highly fucking underrated. One of the few super hero movies that has a high rewatchability factor. http://tinyurl.com/pv8do

.................meh.

You guys. I'm gonna have nightmares of mehs now.
Sorry to all if I spurned this. Because you know this word switching can last FOREVER!! Ha!
Next post is gonna say something like "Cloverfield is a Meh!"
I'm out. -
LOVED the first movie even though in all honestly it hasn't aged very well but it was a good beginning. Now I hope they bring the goods!
http://tinyurl.com/yuu862 -
The narrator stunk.
-
i don't know what movie you think this is. but, fantastic and cartoony is EXACTLY the world of hellboy. sometimes i really wonder about the people on this site...
-
This looks in-fucking-credible. The creature effects look like a smooth combination of the first movie with a bit of Pan's labyrinth thrown in. I'm there opening night. Badass trailer.
-
hell yea.
-
sick of his boring turds
-
nothing about the triler blew me away.
-
But it showed enough for one to conclude that this is going to be mediocre, uninspired Hollywood crap. Does anyone here get anywhere near the buzz off of this trailer that they did with the one for TDK??
Three words: Direct To Video -
...which is a long and probably not as clever as intended way to say I thought Hellboy was trying too hard to be X-Men when it should have been trying to be the Devil's Backbone. If this turns out to be more like Pan's Lab, that's good, because the whole time I was watching PL, I was thinking, "This is what Hellboy should have looked like." Hellboy is 90% atmosphere, 10% actual plot. Or something like that.
-
And, please, there is nothing- nothing- mediocre about Blade Runner. Who gives a fuck if they come out with 10 versions- the least of these would be superior to Hell-fuckin-boy. Lame concept from it's inception, and now lame in celluloid form. Blade Runner= timeless art (PKD story, Ridley Scott's uncompromising vision, brilliant, prescient futurism). They'll still be talking about Blade Runner in 20 years. Hell Boy? Not so much.
-
the voice-over is john hurt. remember? father? obviously NOT hellboy fans!
-
the whole design element. you hit on something good, then, if you use it again, you're either lauded for having a style or derided for repeating yourself. i think del toro does a nice job of interpreting mignola's beautiful work, but, again, if he deviated, everybody would be yelling that he didn't stick to his guns. or something like that.

Okay, the next asshole who carps about aspect ratios gets bitchs
by lobanhaki
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE RIGHT ASPECT RATIO. It all depends on the intent and the style of the filmmakers. What is true, and should be considered is that different screen widths can have different effects on how a film looks, and how the compositions are arranged and perceived. That said, there are masterpieces in all kinds of aspect ratios. Practically anything before 1950 is 1.33:1. That's why we got the screens on TV we got. Then they went widescreen, to try and top television, which was eating into their market. That meant 70mm productions, that meant Anamorphic, that meant matted widescreen. Long story short, they found ways to broaden the screen past what the boob-tube could do. So what does this come down to? It depends. Widescreen does good landscape, epic action, that sort of thing. But if you want more intimate close ups, 1.85:1 is good. However, these aren't hard and fast rules. They're tendencies. There are great action movies and fantasies in 1.85:1, and there are brilliant movies of the same kind in 2.35:1. The creativity of the storyteller is what matters, more than the width of the screen.
-
way to go, Guillermo!
-
your box office might be in trouble. That there's some good writin'!! Mighty good!
-
And I approve of this preview!!
Why the intro- just run the fuckin trailer.
-
He has more scruples than to associate himself with this level of film.
And, lastly, the only good part of the soundtrack occurs 1/4 of the way in- a 2 part orchestral swell (after the line "It's not your imagination"): completely derivative (read: stolen) from the Batman Begins score.
-
I have a widescreen monitor and your post only filled in 75% of the width. Therefore, your post sucks.
-
I appreciate it's artistry. I respect it as an influential film. It has some amazing visuals to this day, but I dare anyone here to sit through Blade Runner and not got bored. If you say you don't get bored. You're lying.
-
People don't get bored of the Mona Lisa, do they? Ridley may not be Leonardo, but he may be the equivalent in the world of film. Just my opinion. Feel free to call me crazy :o
-
Count me in.
-
Wtf is a "weld"?

they should make that.

anyone else catch the "see you next wednesday" ref on the marquee at the beginning? Nod to American Werewolf in London?

Detailing that though Del Toro wants to do the film no one has offered him the cash he needs to do it. FANDOM and Fellow geeks! I think we need to find out how much Mountains of Madness would cost and raise those funds ourselves. I'm sure if everyone who gave a damn contributed 20 dollars to a film fund for that it may yet happen. As to the article, click here:

Movie looks awesome.
-
Comic booky enough to let that great Ron Turneresque monster at the end to be cool and campy at the same time.
-
yuck... that is all....
-
John Hurt was in the first movie, retard. That probably is his voice.
-
Anyone who claims they didnt like the first Hellboy is a fuggin' terrorist.
-
seriously, Pan's Labyrinth was not only liked by critics, most filmmakers came out and called it the best film of last year. They're right, you're wrong, get a clue.
-
Since when is being bored a valid aesthetic critique? Are you too big of a dumbass to be aware of things like Joyce's Ulysses in which certain sections are intentionally designed to bore you? Go and play your fucking guitar hero.
-
However, only a pussy refuses to use scope when needed. Even Spike learned his lesson. Anyway, I walked out of the first Hellboy after about 40 mins and I sure as hell ain't seeing this one!
-
directed by a brilliant autuer..get into it
-
What I liked were the cool sword fights. What I didn't like were the lines by the main characters. They seem to be maintaining consistency with the last film and presenting their characters as deadpan, dead-eyed inflectionless morons. Can Selma Blair express her inner pain in some way more interesting than staring like a zombie? Did they insist that Ron Perlman do all his voice work encased in that rubber head, so it was impossible for him to enunciate properly? The central characters need to be identifiable with. They need to show human emotions. I'm not seeing that here.
-
Terrorist, I tell ya.
-
To be entirely fair, I agree with you on the issue of Selma Blair. It's really bad when the guy in the fish suit seems more emotive than you.
-
It's like Spawn. It's like they took spawn and put hellboy's name on it and thought, hey, this will fucking sell.
-
That's just silly to say. One, it did; Hellboy made a killing on DVD.
Further, Hellboy is on almost every level better than Spawn...I mean, jesus christ, man. From effects to acting to story.
Are you really comparing Ron Perlman to Michael Jai White? -
This looks fun though.
-
...doesn't just scream Wayne Douglas Barlowe, then I don't know what does. Glad to see it.
-
Comparing Hellboy and Spawn? Did I miss a good Spawn movie that came out? Because the one I saw really, really sucked. I would however like to see the Hellboy crew take on a Spawn remake... that could be alot of fun!
-
Bring this on in GLORIOUS QUICKTIME!!!
I'm tired of watching these trailers in tiny frames with blocky stuttering images.
Quicktime Quicktime Quicktime!!!!
Why use anything else!?!?!? -
to a Hellboy movie. Must say, Selma Blair is looking mighty fine. Might-T fine.
-
i hope its more bloody than the first VIVA MEXICO CABRONES
-
Both fucking movies are mediocre shit with poor cgi fx but good make-up on the main characters. Both tamed versions of much more adult films and both have shitty little kids in them. What else do you want to know about my accurate comparison?
-
Okay he didn't, but it had to be said.
-
is that may Wu-Tang cd started up just as I started playing this trailer, with multiple uses of the N word, and I was like WTF? Interesting choice of musical score.
-
Did you catch the Romulan in the background at 1:41?
-
BLADE 4
I THINK THE BLADE SERIES ABSOLUTLY ROCKED. HELLBOY WAS GOOD. IBETTER THAN ALOT OF COMIC BOOK FILMS BUT HOPEFULLY HELLBOY 2 ROCKS OUT WITH ITS COCK OUT
-
why is it that most films lose originality. bring back films like Matrix, Shawshank redemption, Pulp Fiction films that are original and entertaining
the films for release in 2008 are indy4 hulk2 hellboy2. it seems sequels are the new music - sounds the same now as it did 8 years ago. i mean 2007 was what - pirates Shrek Spiderman Die hard and potter sequals and most blew
hollywood writers on strike - GOOD i say- harry should write scripts - hed kick ass -
...one of the more disturbing, nastier things I've seen in quite some time. I really liked the movie overall, but I still haven't gotten that one icky moment out of my head. Yuck. A lot of genius and craftsmanship went into Hellboy, but it ultimately was one single hair too much of a comic book movie. All of Del Toro's efforts (art house and commercial) are worth watching though.
-
Hellboy 2 looks pretty fucking good at this point... hell the whole summer looks fucking good next year!
-
...Thinking back to that year, I loved Children Of Men, United 93, The Queen, Half Nelson, and probally a whole host of others I can't remember. While I didn't mind Devils Backbone, but certainly wasn't that engaged by it, I really didn't like Pan's. It seemed so cookie cutter to me. I know that sounds strange, but the strict, tight laced step father villain, the kindly, but poor maid who of course had to have a brother/father/lover/whatever in the resistance...I don't know, felt really stale and uninspired. Even on a production level, it looked like plastic. Which is why I don't get Del Toro at all. Hey, maybe I just don't gel with spain, since I can't stand Almodovar either.
-
I can't imagine.
Enjoyed the trailer though. -
Awesomeness overload.

Original Academy aspect ratio is 1.37 not 1.33. 1.33 is TV. Idiot. And technically, anamorphic is actually 2.40 not 2.35. Moron. And Hellboy was a cool film.
-
Hated the end of Hell Boy 1 too much shoddy cgi del torro is a genius though and have high hopes perlman rocks my feeble world
-
For thar be no Transformers to ruin it.
-
But my god does all that look fake. Imo, don't release a trailer until you've got the effects finished. That last monster sequence screams halfbaked work, and backlot. Angel of Death looks awesome, Elric Goss looks great, and love that first line delivery- great spear/sword weapon too. WTF was up with that horribly awkward team line-up shot. Johann looks cack in that cheap diving containment suit.
Is it just me or is anyone else sick of that puce, bogey green filter Del Toro used in pretty much all his movies?? How about some blue/black/red like in the comics???? It's not damn chiarascuro enough, and I'm amazed Mignola doesn't slap him for it. -
If you think Blade 2 was anywhere close to being better than the original. That opening fight sequence wipes the floor with everything in Del Toro's effort. Like I said, he's got an immense imagination, but the dude needs to tie it to a decent plot, rather than shoehorning designs and character in just because they look good or make nice bangy noises.
-
Nice tip o the hat there (thanks FilmFunk for pointing it out). Not a great trailer but it's Del Toro and I expect there'll be a couple of Trailer Revisions with more plotty type stuff/action/better music. All in all, not looking too bad. Selma Blair (never liked her) does look quite the hottie in this.
-
so i noticed his name in the cast listing for this and now he's doing the voice over. since he died in the first, will this be some flasback or dream sequence sorta thing cuz if not, it'll be hard to believe he survived a blade through the skull. lol
-
Gotta love Guillermo.
-
Ron pearlman sucks as hellboy.if you know the comic he just doesnt catch hellboys personality...he just repeats hellboys one liners over and over, and abe sapian looks ridiculous! The 1st movie was awful!remember the pointless and awkward love triangle between hellboy, liz and that crappy fbi type guy?! worse thing was that mike mignola had a hands on role with that movie..and it was still awful!Del toro rocks but this sequel looks as bad as the 1st!Booo!
-
It's Generic-Hollywood-trailer-voiceover-guy #4.
Hurt sounds older, and has a slight British accent. -
...must be the coolest monster ever.

Look damn good, I can't wait

Isn't that one monster/demon dude with the fucked up head the same monster/demon dude from Pan's Labyrinth?

no it isnt. but thanks for playing.

... which is really weird because normally I eat most comic book-related shit right up, but I'm more of a Spider-Man and Batman fanatic. Hellboy is one of those superheros where I look at him and I'm like "You know... he has super strength and I guess he's kinda cool and everything, but I really wouldn't want to be him."
-
More giant tentacle monsters. Hellboy is crap.
-
Johann. The character designs look like the tits, but that's a given when you're talking about DeToro. I'm also pleased with the lack of CGI. Looks like a lot of practical effects. I loved the original, mostly thanks to the characters, which is what really justifies a sequel in my opinion.
-
Gotta have the Jazz Hands, yeah!!!
-
accents are funny. he talk funny. funny man sound funny when talking.
-
Which is mucho disappointing, since so many others really dig his work. He makes colorful movies, to be sure, but it all feels like buildup with awkward payoff.
-
i think del toro did exquisite work with pan's labyrinth and most storytellers should be so lucky to hit the nail on the head like that. i also think he's still got some development ahead of him and if he ever gets to 'mountains of madness' i bet it could be the masterwork of a fully-fledged director. he's got his team, he's got his style, he could finally fuse the greater subtlety of his spanish-language films with the more typically-done english-language films. and now i have completely overanalyzed the situation and will only now say that it is frakking john hurt in the trailer, i just listened to it again, he's listed as cast in the movie and i'd know that voice anywhere.
-
No, it's just a retread. Good call, all the same.
-
occula, I actually just think there is loads and loads of praise here in the talkback, but not with a lot of supporting reasons. I think we need people like Del Toro & Jackson in the industry, but at the same time think they need to mature even more in their delivery. Cookie-cutter was a description I read above, and it describes both of them for the majority of their work. The difference is, they are both very good at keeping the production design colorful and true to source, unlike most other cookie-cutter directors. Maybe maybe maybe.
-
yeah i hear you. i think a superhero movie is always a tough nut to crack; what if del toro hadn't done blade and hellboy? (OK blade isn't a superhero but you know what i mean) what if after 'mimic' he'd just done spanish films and become this auteur? everybody would kiss his ass, right? but he is actually sort of a cross-genre director, which is tricky. as a designer i know how hard it is to apply your own sensibilities to different types of work, based on people's expectations rather than your own desires. i do think del toro has it in him to be - as they call him in the trailer - 'visionary.'
-
Am I the only one who thought many of the sets/costumes in the original were horrible? A lot of the bad guys looked like Mortal Combat or Street Fighter rejects. The ensemble of heroes saved it though.
-
Take away the red makeup and horns, and you know it to be true.
-
yourself to whatever is there. I'll be there next summer for sure. Okay, since I don't read the comics, when we see Hellboy,Blue, and Blair, who is the fourth dude with them?
-
If you don't mind a spoiler here's his story. He used to be a medium for spirits and his spirit would leave his body while others used it to commune. However, one time when he left his body a bomb or something hit (I forget exactly why) destroying his physical being but since his spirit was gone he was, in a sense, still alive. He's kind of made up of ectoplasm and stuff and wears the suit to keep shape. It's a pretty cool idea for a character if you ask me.

stick to doing films he's emotionally invested in and not these hollywood hack fests. Granted they are quality hollywood films but still very commerciallized. I understand he needs to do these movies so he can afford to make his own but still, I want more Pan's Labryinths and less Blade2es.
-
That such a screwed up concept. I love it.
-
I've seen interviews where Del Toro claims HELLBOY is his most personal movie, that he relates strongly to Hellboy, etc. I enjoyed it the first time but it doesn't have much rewatch value for me. My least favorite of his movies, I think.
That said, you are still wrong, because BLADE II is a masterpiece. -
Add DVD and cable sales and so on, it probably turned a profit, enough so that a sequel got greenlit.
-
He'd be awesome!
-
I mean....everytime Del Toro releases a movie, theres so much hype around it. Everyone claims its his masterwork, its the best movie ever, Del Toro really pushed the envelope etc...IIt started with Mimic. I saw it in theaters...wish I hadnt. I actually liked the first sequel to Mimic better but I digress. Then came Blade 2...it got the same type of hype and Harry's infamous review. I found it to be not bad but not a single scene in it could even rival the opening ten minutes of the original. Then saw Devil's backbone....just stared at the screen completely unmoved. Then came Hellboy...it wasnt bad..just did nothing for me. Felt like a movie I had already seen. Never got around to Cronos. I was about to avoid Pan's Labyrinth but saw it for free and was pleasantly surprised, but not enough to understand the ever present hype around the guy. Granted I didnt see Cronos, but could someone please explain to me what the big deal is? Or is it just one of those either you get it or you don't deals?

It pulled a neat 99 Mill worldwide, in addition to another 60 or so in DVD sales. For a film with a budget of roughly 66 million, that's a decent enough profit for a studio to make the decision to greenlight a sequel.
-
..I consider a budget of 66 mill to be very lacking, because Mignola writes a large ammount of world-spanning, creature-filled, rich stories. In the current world of HUGE budget films ( I am legend cost 150 mill to make ), A sstory as huge as Hellboy needed something larger to be as good as it wanted to be. Of course, on the other hand, getting a third-string studio to even budget an almost unknown comic book character film, even in the current 'comic book movie boom' market, is a miracle on it's own
-
He's got no wonder. He takes everything in stride, punches it, or pulls out his gun and blows holes in it. That's funny maybe once or twice, but the joke gets old pretty quick. And if you pair him up with sidekicks that react even less than he does... you don't have anyone to identify with in the movie. Unless you root for the monsters. Again, I shudder at Selma Blair's dead face in this ... she's acting exactly the same as in the last flick. That agent with the flashlight in the trailer doesn't help either. What is he? He's got cracking walls, and skittering wierdness, and he doesn't seem to react until he's attacked? There's too much deadpan Coolness in this movie, just like the last one.
-
In spite of the fact that I like the creature designs, and the action (and I actually like the tentacled Beasty vs. Hellboy scene) the overall look of the filmed image is .... soft. The colors seem to be dominated by Red/yellow and Blue (with a bit of occasional Green). And none of the colors are vivid, or stand out. They are all muted, shadowed. This means that, no matter how cool the action scenes may be, the look kinda washes out details. I find it hard on the eyes. Dark muted colored charactes fighting against dark muted backgrounds. Muted Bluisness and Muted Reddish/Yellowishness. We are still in the CGI-friendly Dark Ages, folks.
-
People complained that the first movie wasn't as sock 'em dead as a lot of action films but, really, that's what Hellboy is. It's an odd, quirky (that word again), tongue-in-cheek take on superheroes, action-adventure, pulp stories and the occult. It's never really been about the payoff, more about seeing how wacky and loopy you can get with the whole brew from a stylistic and thematic standpoint. Well, specifically it's Mignola coming up with a bunch of stuff he thinks is cool (which I largely happen to concur with) and then just having fun with it. There's a distinct charm to the whole concept but it's not for everyone. Personally I think Del Toro did a great job making the first film as enjoyable as it was considering what a dreadful bastardisation it would have been in other hands. He was working within limitations (catering to a mainstream audience, keeping suits happy etc.) and I thought he did a fine job. Personally I think this one is gonna be even better because the hard groundwork has already been done. As for Skinjob and Blade Runner, fuck it, why even go there? Hellboy isn't Blade Runner isn't Star Trek. Why even compare them? If you can't see what a fundamentally awesome idea Hellboy is then you're imaginatively impaired in my book and I feel sorry for you.
-
Yeah, a good deal of the colors are muted, and the movie does look dark. It's the closest you'll get to a director trying to make an exact replica of the look/colors of a comic book source, next to going the Sin City route. I'm not saying the opinion isnt valid, but the comics themselves are dark looking and washed out. I've never seen an artist use so much black ink in a color comic book.
-
Until the big red guy shows up. First movie was mediocre, this one does look kind of better, but I think Del Toro's work is better when not constricted to a comic book character. The tentacle thing reminds me of Watchmen...
-
I'm not trying to hate or anything. I mean the guy seems to have a fan base, I just never really enjoyed any of his movies and I think thats because they are all hyped up as HIS BEST MOVIE EVER. Kinda like Eli Roth's made 3 movies and the first Hostel was noted as being so much of a director's evolution and the second one was considered even more of a growth...and we all know how that turned out. Not that I would ever put Del Toro in the same category as ROth no matter hoe much his films have never really moved me. And for the record...why does everyone think Blade two was so good? If you stop to watch it and think about it...its really only 3 extended scenes. The beginning felt like one long expository introduction, the middle was just a big fight at a vamp club, and the end was just the ending fight...but they were all really really long....just had to get that off my chest.
-
Kind of like the color of fire in King Kong, which was the color of... fire, right, Ringles?
-
...but I actually agree with ringy-poo about one thing, namely how utterly heinous Selma Blair is. She's cute as hell and hot (for a self-confessed chainsmoker, anyway) but she couldn't act to save her life. For some reason geeks have given her an eternal pass despite the fact that there has never been a cinematic example of her ever letting a single emotion register in her expression. In The Fog she managed to make the wooden duo of Tom Welling and that Grace chick seem like Tim Roth and Dame Judi Dench.

DRAGON BALL TEASER TRAILER. REMOVE THE SPACES. http://movies.yahoo.com/premieres/5590019/standardformat/
-
It's the lack of variety. But that's not really the problem ... I love properl filmed black and white .. What I mean is that the colors are insufficiently different from eachother in order to provide contrast with eachother. If all the colors are kinda dark and fuzzy it's hard to see details against one another. It's hard to tell the different colors apart. Makes the big action scenes a bit harder to follow. Now, sure, it all takes place at night, and in the dark, but plenty of movies have been made that suggest darkness while still lighting things enough to make them easy to see. EG: Raiders of the Lost Ark's night-time scenes. I don't know what would fix it... more attention to lighting effects? Maybe they are trying to avoid visual conflict between the CGI and the real characters, so they underlight everything so you don't notice that the CGI lighting effects don't look as good as the ones for the real actors. Oh well. Maybe it'll look better in the theater.

Doc, Selma Blair did the voicework for the Hellboy Animated.
by ringwearer9
For the Hellboy Animated film "Sword of Storms". Her voicework was just as dead, but the animators managed to inject some expression into the character's face, so the whole effect came off much better.
-
You may be right that they are trying to replicate the coloring of the comic book, however, the comic book used heavy black outlining to define the characters and objects in it. Also, the pictures in a comic are static, so the eye can pause and figure out the details even when he's being artistic and suggesting shapes rather than outlining them. In a live action film, though, that color scheme defeats the eye somewhat. For an example of a film that adapted the look of a comic book and still managed to make it watchable, see SIN CITY. An example of "Loyal to the look" but hard to watch would be "300". With the exception of the dancing oracle scene.
-
The main villain Rasputin sucked and was as dull as dishwater. Kroenen was pretty nifty, but still couldn't make up for how lame his employer was. If del Toro could have found a way for Hellboy to take on that malicious fascist prick from "Pan's Labyrinth", he would have had a perfect movie...
