Don’t Forget!! JOURNEYMAN’s Final Two Air Tonight & Wednesday!!

Published at:  Dec 17, 2007 6:51:30 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

From an Entertainment Weekly story titled “'Journeyman' Spoiler! Dan's Time Travel Explained in Final Episodes”:

... creator Kevin Falls made sure episodes 11 and 12 (airing Dec. 17 and 19) would address Dan Vasser's (Kevin McKidd) inexplicable ability to time travel. Those episodes, which fulfill the network's order, expand on Elliot Langley's (Tom Everett) experimentation on quantum leaping and introduce Dan to a fellow time tourist, who he finds in an insane asylum. “We felt like we started to see the handwriting on the wall, between the ratings and the writers strike, so we recalibrated how we would break the last few episodes," explains Falls. "We do answer quite a few questions so fans will get a feeling of closure.”

"Will Bionic Woman, which before the WGA struck was hoping to reverse its fortunes with a two-part January "relaunch," ever get the chance to fine-tune its engine? Although there were earlier reports (me: from World Entertainment News Network) that not only has the NBC series exhausted its supply of scripted episodes but it has been altogether scrapped, a spokesperson for NBC Universal Media Studios tells TVGuide.com, "Bionic Woman has not been cancelled. Production was shut down due to the WGA strike. In addition, we have not completed the initial 13-episode order, which will be the first order of business when the strike ends."

    Frakked up stuff.

    Best show this season...

    by executor

...if you only watch this and Cane. Journeyman was a decent show that unfortunately relied too much on the "time-travel-of-the-week" story instead of advancing present day plot lines and mysteries. At its best in the FBI/stolen money arc, but then went back to its averageness last week. Certainly nothing to wish the death of Zucker over. LMAO. How great did you really think this show was???

And as far as Bionic Woman goes...

    by executor

...there is more to the decision making process for cancelling/keeping a show than just the ratings. The network execs do more than scan the Nielsens when they make a decision. Cost of commercial time, demographics, contracts, relationships, and much more goes into the process. (for example, last year Studio 60 had such a cancellation penalty, that it would have cost NBC basically the same to NOT pick up the back 9 as it would to pick it up. Thus it lasted a year though everyone knew it was on life support.)
Point is, there are a lot of factors when it comes to keeping and killing shows. On the other hand, sometimes execs are just batshit stupid too.

    by chiahead

I second Node32774's sentiments. I really enjoyed this show from the get-go and saw a lot of as yet untapped stories in this potentially great premise. One of my favorites actually, the time travel thing. Personally I think Falls & Co.'s decision to not explain early on was motivated from their wanting the series as a whole to have a more consistent tone and was less motivated by the need to capture that audience right out of the gate. A gamble, yes, but had it paid off we wouldn't be cringing at Journeyman Season 1 DVDs the same way we do with say, ST:TNG Season 1. Excellent work there too, yes, but who can deny that as that series aged the episodes got more polished. Mind you i'm not making a comparison of tone, subject matter or style, but more of a comparison of storytelling choices. Those writers chose to populate their first season with a lot of... attention grabbing cliche sci fi isms. And only after they got our attention really challenge themselves and us to see something new and/or different. Personally I'm grateful when any writer trusts his/her audience enough to trust the story in their hands. Sadly this show didn't have as much "WTF did I just see!" fuel as say, LOST, another show whose first season had a LOT of self confidence. (again not a comparison of subject matter) and instead of lamenting over how goofy the first season of Jouneyman was to its subsequent, award winning second and third seasons, we're lamenting that we'll only get one at all. All the same, I'm grateful to have the 12 slices we got of this, despite still being very very hungry.

First, love this show now. Second, anyone read 'Replay'?

    by heckles

I am getting more into this show. I really hope it doesn't get cancelled, dammit. They are bringing things together, paying off storylines, it's just getting better. NBC needs to let this show expand. It's not a concept that can get running in a handful of episodes and be a smash hit. It will get there.

Now, I'm starting to get shades of a great book called 'Replay' by Ken Grimwood. If you guys haven't checked it, read it.

Regardless, save Journeyman. For the first time in my own personal geekdom, I am willing to participate in some kind of online campaign. With so much shit on the air, it angers me to have this show cancelled. So much potential. Damn shame.

Not that is a bad thing. They are kind of similar. Doesn't mean I agree with the re-skinned comment. However, going back in time and 'righting something that once went wrong' via time travel is a common thread in both shows. The similarities do end there, however.

We Should Try and Save This Show

    by average j.

I have never been involved in a 'Save This Show' campaign mostly because I just really don't care. Even for most of my favorite shows, I just don't care. But 'Journeyman' is an exception. It's the first show in years I actually look forward to watching. I love 'Lost' and 'Heroes' but if they were to go away tomorrow, I'd get over it quickly (though I would wonder what the hell the smoke monster was). 'Journeyman' is an exceptional piece of entertainment that just hasn't come along in years. The acting, writing, directing and overall storytelling so rarely comes together so elegantly, especially for a first season show. NBC just doesn't really know what it has and is throwing away. This is a show that needs an advertising push and a better timeslot. The ratings will be there. I can think of another incredible NBC show that was just thrown away and I'm sure with great regret now. That show was 'Freaks and Geeks' and it still stands as my #1 show of all time. Like 'Journeyman' it had the rare occurrence of everything working in its favor, but unfortunately aired on a network with bad eyesight. And just look at what happened to the team behind that incredible show. They went on to make some of the highest grossing comedies of this decade. Yes, 'Journeyman' is a completely different creature, but one where all the elements have converged to make it a fantastic piece of entertainment. So I say, lets tell NBC what they have on their hands and try and get this cancellation reversed. I'll be the first one in line to buy those DVD's as long as there is at least a conclusion to the story or at best a second season coming. Now, does anyone know whom we can email or write in order to get the ball rolling? 'Aint It Cool News' - how about a little help in getting this campaign in gear?

The only other thing it could be, IF Langley didn't recognize him, is that somehow Dan's travels changed the timeline, and they never met. Okay, I know I'm preaching to the choir, a suitable pun I think due to the lead in show, but cancelling this show would be a big mistake. It was good at the start, and is progressing to greatness. And why are they considering cancelling?

Because exec's pay/bonuses comes from instant hits. If a show takes a while to build, as di...oh...let's say Cheers (which premiered in last place), execs don't get their money.

    WHY Langely didn't Recognize him...

    by nrn

Simple as this... In a time travel show, do you really think the technology for that travel exists in the present? No. The Elliot Langley he meets and talks to contacts him the different time periods that he is in. Meaning its an Elliot Langley FROM THE FUTURE. This is why he didn't recognize him last night. He doesn't know him yet.

the guard said "another one mr langley?" meaning that its happened before. Everyone tries to contact the present him, but its the future him they've been in contact with.

    by chiahead

I've known of Emily Swallows work for a few years now. And out of respect for her hottness I won't make a [genuine] joke about shooting her in the face. That said, I took her being shot not to imply that it would cause future repercussions, specifically with Langley, but just that the bad guy gets it in the end. It was established, prior to her death, that she was the "other buyer" and was party to the kid's alternate timeline demise. to connect her with Langley... I don't think it's really supported in the text. But that's just my opinion.

    Langley DID know Dan

    by ninja nerd

He is being watched, perhaps by people involved with the FBI guy. He couldn't take a chance that someone watching or listening would be very interested that he knew Dan Vassar. The look at the door (Langley looking out at Dan) seemed to be "idiot...walk away, I'll call you later". I don't say it's not like NRN states...Langley is visiting from some future...but I think it's more likely that someone clued into the the "two events" the psychic chick (and she's smoking hot!) mentioned that were Livia's and Dan's births, from a scientific perspective. Langley was at NASA; perhaps he's involved in a Time Tunnel project and can "see" Dan and Livia's travels, but cannot travel himself. After all, unless he and Dan have the same birthday, he shouldn't be able to travel.

If he didn't know Dan he would have said something like "hey, the guy in the picture does look like me; where have you got this?" - or something like that. His reaction was too weird for someone who pretended not to know Dan.

    Re: Limey

    by iammrmonkey!

Is a term derived from the fact that British sailors used to eat a lot of limes in the hope it would ward off scurvy. As Scotland is part of Britain, a Scot *could* be called a 'limey' but it seems to have changed over the course of the years to refer more directly to the English. If you called a Scot a limey you'd probably get some strange looks. If you called an English guy a limey, most people would know what you mean.

    Another great episode!

    by big jim

It's a shame there's only 1 more. This has been my favourite show of the year. Most TV I record and watch later, Journeyman has become one of the very few shows I watch live because I can't wait. Like many here, I too was unimpressed by the promos NBC was running and almost didn't watch the first episode. In fact, I recorded it to maybe watch later. Same for the second, third, and fourth. Finally got around to seeing it and watched all four straight through. First episode, by the end I thought "I kinda dig this show" but I think it was the second episode, with the scene on the '70s plane that made me love it. Glad I didn't pass on what has become, for me, the best new show this year.Anyone who relishes the cancellation of Journeyman because they think it will get replaced by something "good" is an idiot. Either that or someone who enjoys AI clones and shows like last year's Punk'd Wedding, because that's what you'll get. I wonder, is Peter Graves the head of programming at NBC? "Billy, do you like shows about Gladiators?"

    Annoyed From Blighty Writes....

    by professor.heinrich.von.squawkencluck

The curse of Sky TV has struck again.. Once more the Mighty Murdoch's U.K. Televisual Empire picks up a show only to see it cancelled mere days later.

It is now reaching the point where it is seemingly an exercise in futility to like any show with a modicum of promise/intelligence as you know it's going to be flushed like the morning turd...

Are we doomed to a reality dominated by "Reality"? There are only so many Warhollian 15 minutes a sane and rational soul can take before He (or She) starts to contemplate a life shaped by firearm fetishism and an affinity for plastique.

The crux of the matter is that, no matter how mightily I would like to smite myne foes who control the broadcast world.. The simple fact remains that as long as the tabloid fed unwashed masses continue to lap up the effluvium gruel masquerading as "quality programming" that networks pump out (Yes I mean you "American Idol X Factor I'm A Celebrity Get Me Into rehab or resurrect my career whilst I prostitute myself shamelessly on a desert island singing off key in the shower whilst showing off my mammaries/pectorals to an angst riddled self loathing world...")

ratings.. that's the kicker.. column inches and advertising revenue selling a lifestyle you will never achieve whilst promoting the faintest scintilla of hope in youe self deluding soul that you too are a star yet undiscovered..

Journeyman was fucked from the start.

but then there's also other factors to consider: salary cap, expansion - dilution of talent...And in terms of viewing, instant replay sucks zucker dick. Talk about killing the flow of the game, and to what end? The refs are there for a reason, to call the game as best as they can. If you lose by a single call, you don't deserve to win. So rub some dirt on your dick and get back in the game.Node, you've got to be kidding. While every region has its "quirks", you can't make a blanket statement like that. Being from NC and travelling the better part of 25 years around the south, I can tell you not all of us have pick-ups, confederate flags, cars on cinderblocks in the back yard, outhouses, cousins as wives, shotgun racks, a 3rd grade education, and not all cattle are stump trained.

I thought you knew better. My car on cinderblocks is in the front yard, and we don't consider 2nd cousins actual cousins. Hell, I only stump train the female cows 'cause having sex with is bull ain't what it's cracked up to be. (In case you were wondering, stump trained is when you train a cow to back up to a stump...so you don't have to get a step ladder...those are dangerous.)

    by drath

or Bionic Woman, but I think it's relative lack of humor hurt it as well as being stuck after Heroes which doesn't lead into heavy dramas very well. Biggest problem was that NBC didn't get behind it and in failing that they let most viewers think it was just a Quantum Leap clone. I know people who dismissed it as such right out of the gate. Good word of mouth might have helped, but I still believe that very much has to be helped by a hype machine that was not at work on this show. Heroes was just a slow when it started, but it somehow took off for people. Probably it was helped by sexy young stars (and maybe that's the key to everything), but it took a while to really start working. I wish it was as easy as good show=good ratings, but anyone who thinks that's how it works is a blind ape.

Langley obviously still knew Dan and here's why

    by mazzke

Dan showed him a picture of a younger Langley with a younger Dan. Langley wasn't the least bit phased and fully acknowledged the picture. Without missing a beat, he then tells the security guard that he's never seen Dan before in his life. If that were true and he really had never seen him before, he would have had some reaction to that picture even if it were something as mild as "where'd you get that?" The fact that he was completely nonplussed means that the events in the picture were so known to him that he didn't even want to discuss it; thus, he knew Dan and was lying to the security guard.

So, if JM had 3.1 million households watching, and that number was 5% of the total households watching TV at that time, then the total number of households in front of the boob tube was 62 million? Although I have not been on the new one, the old one was nerd nirvana. Best part wasn't the ride itself but the part before standing on the bridge of the Enterprise with the crew members running around.
