JoBlo has the first look at the trailer for Will Smith's HANCOCK!!!

Published at:  Dec 18, 2007 4:27:25 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Over the last year I've heard nothing but good things about the script (surprising because there are more writers on this film than Oscars on Spielberg's shelf) and getting Will Smith to play a cranky, lazy superhero in a huge-budgeted comedy is pretty hard to mess up.

Now JoBlo got the exclusive to host the first trailer for HANCOCK and I gotta say... Despite a little evil inkling of similarity to the godawful MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND I had a lot of fun with this trailer and am looking forward to the powerhouse I'm sure the movie will be come next Summer. It's hardly my most anticipated movie of '08... or even my most anticipated comedy (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and YEAR ONE are), but it looks like a good time at the movies to me. What do you folks think?

YEAH, I KNOW... TONIGHT HE COMES WAS A BETTER TITLE, BUT HANCOCK SOUNDS JUST AS DIRTY... CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER!

Just pillow talk, I thought te dialog that it implied that it was a greenpeace boat that got hit. ( otherwise why didn't he say PETA? ) Greenpeace boats are like Ninjas...

"I thought [ninjas] just hung around airports and got sucked up into jet engines."

The trailer worked for me... someone who is not quite completely inept, but has no style or subtlety to his nature being a super hero. Seems like you could do something good with that. We'll see.

.I did love her mini-arc on Arrested. Five writers on a comedy ( including Akiva Goldsman, can Will Smith take a shit without this guy attached? ) is never a good sign. The last time it worked was, I think, Blazing Saddles.

Like the serious acting Tom Cruise musters in MI:Fill in the blank? If Smith loves the green, the green returns the favor. Smith's movies now average $120 million, topping Ford, Hanks, and Cruise. I know, popular and legit acting are two different things, but tell me he didn't act his ass off in I Am Legend....

    by annoyyou

As Carrey, Cruise and, yes, Hanks have proven, every "beloved, Teflon movie star" has their saturation point. Smith seems more immune than most because he's chosen his movies much more carefully that the abovementioned guys, but even he will top out at one point. However, as he has succeeded in serious roles and comedies in equal measure, it may be a very long while before this happens.

the Will Smith hate. Okay, so he has a tag line; Aw hell naw. So what. There was a certain actor who many thought could barely act, wouldn't make it, has no range, and he had a tag line. It went: "I'll be back" and Arnold was time and time again. Smith does drama and comedy. You may not like every movie of his, (I'm talking to you I,Robot haters) but regardless of how you feel about the movie, the fact is he can act everyone on this site into the ground. Seriously, regardless of how you felt about I Am Legend, is there anyone out there who can say his acting was not superb? The dog scene, alone with the mannequins, zoning out when he encounters people because he's forgotten how to interact with them? Okay Hanks did it better in Castaway because he had much more alone time, but Smith was was great in this role

Was going to be a Jazz Biography for Herbie Hancock. Thought that might be cool but mis-cast. Turns out it's something much worse. Hope Don Cheadle is coming along with his Miles Davis project. Perfect fit for Davis. Denzel would've made a great Coltrane if he was 10-15 years younger... WTF am I talking about and why did I just bring this up?

Smith does not say that line in every film he's in as you claim he does.

He never said it in "Ali," "Pursuit of Happyness" or "I am Legend." I don't even think he said it in "Hitch." But I'm sure you'd prefer that he had so you can continue being hip with the rest of the savy talkbackers who have trouble comprehending actual facts.

Reason for all the Will Smith hate....on AICN anyway....

    by kai_mah'gra

.....I'm just gonna throw it out there, but it's the truth so blow me. It's the black thing. Yeah, it is. Here's an actor who's refused to break out of the "urban" persona and lingo, for a good chunk of the characters he's played on screen, and yet has still somehow managed to not only remain successful through it all, but even now, as it seems, be the most bankable star working in Hollywood. And that just rubs a hell of a whole lot of the notoriously, how hall we say, prejudicially challenged, AICN talkback folk the wrong wrong way. Before you all jump on me, case in point; Nicholas Cage makes far worse movies on a far frequent and routine basis, and yet gets nowhere near the same crap Smith gets on this site. Watch and see if the National Treasure sequel talkbacks generate anywhere near as much hate. Ditto, Costner (when he was still making movies, which were, of course, mostly crap). Sorry, to say it, but the Will Smith hate thing is just a race thing,..... on AICN TB's anyway. Where the fact that a black, non-de-urbanified (if that's a word) or non-playing against (Stereo)type leading continues to attract crowds who can look beyond his race, and enjoy his movies, doesn't make sense to the anti-AW-HELL-NAW hordes. It must really suck to know that the guy is currently bigger than Cruise, Pitt, and even Hanks, in being as close to a sure thing at the Box Office as there is. Now pounce, Lemmings, pounce.....

    Lemming #1

    by t 1000 xp professional

I don't think he's a bad actor at all. He did an amazing job in I AM LEGEND...It's just his movies have mostly been mediocre. Well, the blockbuster ones at least. Independence Day in hindsight was borderline comedy. I give it to the man for knowing what sells. As far as the non de-urbanified character that you speak of, Will Smith is extremely de-urbanified. In fact he's gotten alot of flack for not acting "black" enough. The reason that all these actors are movie stars are because of lots time showing the public their personality which in result will make them likeable. AHHNULD, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt and so on have all done this.....We then start substituting the actor's character with their real life persona...How many times have you seen a movie and describe it to somebody by saying the actor's name and not the character?
Kai_mah'gra there's this movie called CRASH you'd love it.... ;) that was my cheap shot

.....even though, I realize you're supposed to hate it on this site. But then again, I'm not a Lemming, so what the hey. And people on this site don't hate on Will Smith because his movies are "mostly mediocre", but rather because he's Will Smith. He got just as much love (or is that hate?) on AICN, for Ali and even Happyness last year, - in those 2 mostly mediocre Oscar nominated performances in 2 mostly mediocre but generally decent, if not straight-up non blockbuster-type movies.

    by geraldbeans

You do know that what you're saying is absolutely ridiculous right? Let me throw out a few names for you. Brett Ratner, Uwe Boll, Tom Cruise. What color are they again? EVERYBODY gets roasted on this site. There is no prejudice in roasting here at AICN. Anybody who is successful and therefore has more than the people who frequent this site, are the enemy. Nicolas Cage? I can't remember the last time someone said something good about his acting. Not only on this site but anywhere. This is like when Donovon McNabb came out this year and said no quarterback was critized and scrutinized more than he was and it was because he was black. That lasted all of ten seconds before an announcer asked him, "Hey, doesn't Rex Grossman get critized more than you?" That shut McNabb up. Point is that race place a part in things - yes. But in this issue, not at all. I can see why people don't like Smith and his "I love everything about the world" peaches and ice cream approach to life. That grates on people. It makes him seem fake, like he's hiding something. I personally like him and most of his films. Oh, and I'm white. Go figure.

Although you may have a few racist dochebag TBers on this site, i doubt if the majority of the Smith hate is fueled by the fact that he's Black. Some just see him as a hack (Hitch, Wild Wild West & Bagger Vance) or the fact that he was'nt "Black" enough(from his rap career and "selling out") which is very fucking ignorant to make such an assumption. After seeing Six degrees, Enemy of the State and especially Pursuit, Will has range and may just earn his golden statue. Like one of the posters mentioned; Boll,Ratner,Anderson,Wiseman etc. have gotten their share of trolling and *Gasps* they are all White. To qoute that cheesy tagline from a certain Movie based on a certain survival horror videogame directed by a certain hack director: "No one is immune".

.......yes, it's funny to note that all of the examples you guys gave (save for Cruise; but then again he's gone batshit insane, and that's when his star began to fall anyway) are directors. None of whom appear in front of camera and for whom, of course, the colour of their skin isn't an issue affecting their marketability or "image", to the degree of someone who does appear in front of camera. All those supposedly lousy white actors out there and you could only come up with one example ( oh, and of course the Cage example which I had already pointed out)in comparison,- speaks volumes. Oh and geraldbeans, if you think there's no prejudice on roasting on this site, please come back and visit the next time a Martin Lawrence movie is reviewed or even any other black-themed movie (assuming it would ever get any air-time here, that is) and then visit the talkbacks and come back and talk to me about your "no prejudice" bullcrap.

being arrogant or egotistical. I'm not talking about his roles, but real life which is what you're accusing him of. Dude, some guy in Japan fell asleep at the I Am Legend press conference (no jokes please), and Smith is teasing the guy (no maliciously) and later they get their picture taken together. Smith later said it would be arrogant of himself to get upset at someone because they've put in hard day at work and nodded off, or something to that effect. This was very humble and classy on Smith's part.

I'm pretty sure I gave two examples of movie stars. Both Cruise and Cage. Apparently they're not good enough for you because they ruin your argument. So here's another one: Mel Gibson. "But but but". If every white actor I mention has an excuse for why they get attacked, there's no point arguing this with you as you're obviously not willing to admit that you're wrong. If the sole reason that a movie star would be attacked on this site is because, as you say, he is black, how come Denzel Washington does not get treated the same way as Smith? How bout Sam Jackson? Or Morgan Freeman? They're black, right? Oh yeah, or is it because they're more respected actors? The unfortunate situation with Smith is that he started his career out as The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. He was goofy, he couldn't act, and he had that song that none of us will ever be able to forget. It's hard for people to look past that and take Smith as a "serious" actor. Very simple. Nothing to do with race. But keep telling yourself that so you can keep the race war alive! Down goes Whitey!

.....If you read my first post on this train of discussion you'll notice that Nicholas Cage was MY example, not yours. You don't point out what someone else has already mentioned and then claim it as you're own example. Cruise was the only new example you came up with, and as I pointed out, it's because he's so obvious (in his batshit insanity - scientology-induced of course -) that it would be kind of hard (and ridiculous) to dispute the fact that he gets crap on this site - his race not withstanding. And no, Mel Gibson doesn't get nearly the same amount of crap that Will Smith does - his anti-semitism notwithstanding either. As for your "black" counterpoint examples, how often do you see Denzel Washington or Morgan Freeman playing the "stereotypical" black-guy/rapper or former rapper type role for which Smith supposedly gets lambasted for? Freeman and Washington are de fact leading men type in the mold of Sidney Poitier. Unlike Gooding Jnr or even Jamie Foxx, to recall 2 other black academy award winners. So there's no way you can give me a Washington or a Morgan Freeman and tell me that that's a fair or even valid comparison to a Will Smith; and you know this yourself. As for Sam Jackson ( yes, I hadn't forgotten about him, nor was I ignoring him), he's made a career out of playing a certain persona, not far removed from his own real life personality, of the big black badass yet cool angry black man. It works for him and it works for his movies and his place in pop culture. However, it also works against him in that you'll never see him heading a studios's Summer tentpole blockbuster ala Will Smith, because his appeal his likewise limited. So once again invalid comparison. In any case its a moot side-argument in light of the fact that at no point did I ever say that the only reason an actor, any actor, gets crap on this site is because of his race; I said the only seemingly valid reason that Will Smith, specifically, seems to get crap on AICN talkbacks specifically, despite his wide appeal elsewhere, both at the box office and in critics circles, is because of his race. You'll help yourself, and your arguments, a lot in understanding how that differs from your own distorted interpretation of what I was saying.

    honestly Kai, you're right - I don't know what you're saying

    by geraldbeans

Because you're twisting everything you say in each subsequent post. At the beginning of your first post I'm pretty sure you said, point blank, "it's a black thing". Pretty clear to me. That would imply that you meant... "it's" "a" "black" "thing". Meaning it's because he is black. So the other actors I mentioned fall under that category. They are black too. Are you saying that in order to be used as a black example you have to have taken the exact same career path as Smith. Have a hit sitcom, make the biggest movie in a decade, follow it up with a couple more blockbusters, get a chance to do some more serious work, etc., etc., Yeah because so many black actors have been afforded that path. I don't know what to tell you. Is it a black thing or isn't it? If it is (in your eyes), then Washington, Freeman, and Jackson fall under that same category. At least I think they do. As for Cage, he became my example because you were wrong. Cage gets blasted on this site. He's a joke actor now, an "entertainer", as Penn said. Geeks here feel the same way. If you're going to use an example, at least use one that supports your case. People don't like really successful people that are happy, seem to have it all, and, in the public's opinion, aren't that talented (an insinuation that Smith himself acknowledged about himself in a recent interview). So they complain and make fun of him. Big deal. It's not malicious at all. When Ben Affleck was the biggest movie star in the world and people started making fun of him, was it because he was black too? Oh wait, he was white. And he was still made fun of?? But how can that be? I thought that only happened to black actors because everybody here is racist. I'll say this for you one more time. Talkbackers don't discriminate. They make fun of everyone. I apologize but this topic is closed for me. I won't be checking it anymore because nothing you've said has had any legitmacy whatsoever.

yes, geraldbeans run........ run like the wind....

    by kai_mah'gra

......... can't put up a coherent argument so we run like a bitch, claiming the other person has no "legitimacy" (hint: you really should seriously look up the meaning of the word before you go mucking it up, trying to put someone else down). As for your other so-called counterpoints, to begin with, my argument was regarding Will Smith being a black actor, SPECIFICALLY, and not as a hard and fast rule regarding all black actors in general. Try to let that digest and sink in before you proceed any further, trust me it'll help. This means that, Denzel Washington is also a black actor but is not likely to fall to the same level of crap ( as Smith is given on AICN talkbacks) despite the fact that he's also black. It means that Sidney Poitier is not likely to fall under the same level of crap because he, like Washington, transcend the whole race thing in the minds of the same crap-issuers on this site because of their, respectability as actors and their breadth of their career works (which, obviously Will Smith does not have). Again, the "it's THE black thing" comment ("THE" black thing, not "a" black thing as you typically misquoted me) as I mentioned it was SPECIFIC to Will Smith, in this case and not a hard and fast rule. At no point did I state that this is the rule when if and when it comes to all black actors as I've already pointed out with the examples of Washington, Poitier and Freeman.Try to appreciate the difference between what I've just said and between what you're trying to convince yourself I said, and you'll go a long way in helping yourself not trip all over your perpetually convoluting logic. And when I pointed out Cage, I believe it was when I was giving a comparison of a crappy white actor who craps out bad movie after bad movie, and yet gets nowhere near the SAME amount of crap or hate that Will Smith does. Does he get crap? Absolutely. Does he get anywhere near as much as Smith does? Not even close. And that was my point, you genius. And as a case in point I told you to watch for the National Treasure sequel talkback and compare the hate on that TB to what Smith gets. How in world in your loony little mind is that a wrong example that doesn't support my argument? And then you go and give him as your example and claim it as one of the only 2 actors you could come up with. Reading skills are seriously under-rated. You seriously think talkbackers don't discriminate? that tells me you haven't been on these talkbacks or on AICN for very long. I'll say again just hoping it gets through this time; next time a Martin Lawrence movie or a black-themed movie, or a movie featuring a rapper-turned actor is released and reviewed on this site, visit the talkback and see if you can come back with your "Talkbackers don't discriminate" bullcrap. Oh, but wait I forgot, that's right, you're running, aren't you..........like the fine courageous little debater you are. So I guess we won't be hearing again from you anytime soon. Run cupcake, run. I weep for the human race.........

What is more like Will Smith would be...

    by stalkeye

starring in carefully picked scripts that utilize his acting potentual like Enemy of the state, Ali and Pursuit of happiness as opposed to dumb ass big budget movies like Independance Day, Wild Wild West,Bad Boys and MIB2. Smith has range especially for an ex rapper. Only a hater would typecast Smith in lame ass comedies. Oh and M-O-M, unfortunatly for you, guys like Gerrad Butler was unavailable to be cast as Neville, because he was shooting dumb ass chick flicks like P.S. I love you and dropped out of the EFNY remake due to "creative differences". (sarcasm intended)
