The DRAGONBALL movie has a lovely leading lady!

Published at:  Dec 17, 2007 11:21:21 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I honestly have zero interest in DRAGONBALL Z. Never got into that whole thing, but then again I've never been big into anime on the whole. I think I was slightly too old when it hit... maybe not old enough to find a sort of camp value to it and not young enough to actually dig it.

The movie is sounding pretty bizarre. Live-action flick with WAR OF THE WORLD's Justin Chatwin starring as Goku and James Marsters playing the villain, Lord Piccolo. Now they've added brown-eyed beauty Emmy Rossum (POSEIDON) as Bulma, the leading female character.

Like I said, I don't know this world very much, so I'll leave it to the fans below to discuss how good or bad this casting is. The only thing I find remotely interesting about this project at all is that Stephen Chow is producing. What about you?

Happy to see Emmy get more screen work

    by lex romero

She's gorgeous, happy to have her in anything. Not sure on the adaptation, i've never been a fan of the series, there's better anime out there (though the manga is meant to be better). However i'm intrigued to see how the super fights and dragonball world will transfer to the screen as i'm really not sure it will work. But if it does there's potentially for it to be amazing in live action.

    Piccolo?

    by johnny anarchy

When they said James Marsters as the "villain" of the movie I immediately pictured him as Vegeta. If you compare picture of Marsters to pictures of Vegeta you can see how that casting is almost perfect... but Piccolo? I'm praying that is some kind of mistake.

I agree that the show d r a g g e d things out but the pace of the manga was much quicker and if they give this movie the Sin City/300/Speed Racer artistic treatment it could become something that is visually amazing. I'm not holding my breath though.

    by zerocorpse

Crappiest "art" form out there. Static images with moving mouths and motion lines don't count as animation.

And yes, I used to be deep into anime up until I got wise in the early 90s. Now I realize it's crap, along with manga and most Japanese video games that use that same style of art.
This will be a B-movie that ends up having a SciFi channel direct-to-TV sequel the following year.

    I'm confused about this:

    by zerath

It's supposed to be Drabonball Z but they are casting a late-teen/early-twenties style character and they are fighting Lord Piccolo. So, it's set in the first Dragonball series and not Z?

You would think they would skip DB and start with the Saiyan saga (it'd do-able in 120 minutes) where Radditz comes to Earth. At the very end of the movie you see blips in space which would be Vegeta and Radditz. It would also end with Goku dying. Perfect way to set up for a multi-film saga, which, this should be.

I should be making this movie....ok that sunds like whiny fanboy talkbacker speak...but dammit I'd been working on this for a while. the movie had stalled, the hinted plotlines coming out of Fox were awful so i decided to take matters into my own hands.

I wrote and wrote and wrote and ended up with an awesome story. I even went to some of the hardcore fans to make sure i wasn't screwing it up.

And then, just as I was about to send it into Fox...bang the film goes into production, leaving me pretty much screwed.

And yes, I'm aware that you're wondering what makes me think my DB movie would have been anything special and anything resembling a good adaptation...after all I'm a nobody on a talkback...right?

Well, it had everything. I made some changes, sure. But the oozaru was there, Nappa, raditz and Vegeta were there, Piccolo had a badass fight with Goku at the beginning of the film (from the world martial arts Tournament)...it wasn't a perfect adaptation, i had to change things, like turning Snake Way into a never-ending desert, to make it more digestable for casual audiences, but it was close as, I think, a live-action film could be...no emo-teen Goku at school.

It won't see the light of day now, which frankly, has me kinda depressed...maybe someday i'll put my work on the DB saga online, but not for a long time, until I've gotten over it.

Seriously, I expect nothing good from this film, and I've been a DBZ fan from way back when. I doubt that even Mr. Chow can work his magic and pull it back from the brink of terribleness. What bothers me most is how it's set up. If they're using the DBZ storyline, how is Piccolo the main villan? By then he was just the guy that always saved everyone's ass and complained non-stop about doing it. Sure, he hated Goku, but he wasn't the villan. And honestly, do we want a movie where everyone stands around screaming? Let's not forget what the majority of the show was now folks.

Chatwin and Rossum are excellent but James Wong is a worthy member of the Hack Pack to begin with. And the first leaked pics are hilarious. A $100 million+ flick shot, edited and post-produced in merely 8 months: I thought only Joel Silver could hal-bake a Lethal Weapon IV that way.

Yeah, it was flawed by the 30 minute power ups and retarded filler episodes, but it had some of the most over the top ridiculoid fights. The Frieza saga... the Androids saga... The Cell saga... fun times watching that in Highschool and early college years back when it aired on Cartoon network in the afternoon. I can believe that your story could have been a great DBZ adaptation for the big screen, and I know exactly how you feel, because I have written a couple of adaptations with a good friend of mine, and one (written in the '99) was "Transformers", and while it wans't perfectly true to the cartoon, it was a damn GREAT movie (for me of course) and at least it had a plot! Everything was so good (well, the 20th version) that we were working already on a sequel, just to be sure it could have the same level of quality... So I'm sure you could have written a great movie based on DBZ...
    P.S.

    by vadakinx

Live action all the way. But you need the right angle to make it work. For the first film Dragonball: The Warrior Prince, the theme was Immortality. There was no lookout in the sky, no talking cats or dinosaurs, or pigs or anything like that. In a way it was like the Blade films, where you have the world we know, then another world behind the curtain. The oozaru was there, but I changed things a bit...would have had an awesome Oozaru vs Oozaru fight with Vegeta and Gohan...I even knew how it would be shot.

I had plans for 6 films, though the first two were the most developed, dealing with vegeta and Frieza...I trimmed a lot of the fat from the series..no body transfers from Ginyu for example, no Princess Snake...at least not in the form we're used to.

It's a shame really, could have been cool...guess it's back to writing dramas.

    Miyazaki Hayao

by just another useless chump with a microp

You know, I was just gonna read. I wasn't gonna post. But you always have to have some rabid fanboy throwing out the name Miyazaki, like it gives them some kind of cred because they "get it".

Let me tell ya something, Chachi. Miyazaki Hayao sucks. His films are complete shit that need to go back to the editing room. They are long, boring, and retardedly preachy. And I didn't just see one of his films...oh no, I'm a stubborn asshole. When I saw Princess Mononoke, and considered it to be complete shite, I thought "Well, wow, so many people love Miyazaki, this just has to be one of his lesser works." And I said that after Spirited Away. And I said that after Castle Of Cagliostro. And I said that after Howl's Moving Castle. And finally, after seeing Nausicaa: Valley Of The Wind, I gave up. I realized that this guy isn't a great, amazing director of art. He's a shitty artist whose work is so pretentious, people PRETEND to like his shit so that they can feel like they're a part of the "In" crowd. Like saying that you like Miyazaki makes you somehow "cool" and "cultured", instead of some fat greasy virgin who jerks off to Urotsukidoji hentai.

Yeah, I did my time. I used to be an anime fanboy when I was younger. Then I realized how anime is no different than American film. You have a couple of genres, and within each genre is nothing but a plethora of titles each ripping off the Next Big Thing. Something becomes popular, you get 50 Bajillion clones. So help me, I got so tired of seeing Harem Comedies and Thought-Provoking Dramas with Giant Mechas, or Super-Powered Ninja Battles. It's all the same shit, over and over again. Anime as a genre is more desperately derivative than anything you'll find in the US, but it's new to us, so we think it's amazing and innovative. It's not. It's just ripping off of the same shit, which just HAPPENS to be shit we may not have seen.

Miyazaki sucks. Dragonball sucks. Naruto REALLY sucks. Fuck you and your anime fanboyism.

Ravosyle - More like the WORST Cast EVER

    by filmstu2005

Seriously, thos are awful choices. Lu Kang as Goku? Have u seen that guy lately? Forest Whitaker FRreiza? Youve got to be fuckin me.

Only one that sounds even ok is Djimon Honsou as Piccolo b/c i can practically see him in that look. NO To everyone else.

I like the cast so far. Jamie from the Real world is HOT and will be even hotter as Chi Chi. Emmy Rossum, do ur thing girl. U too James mardsten. The guy playing goku? Eh, we'll just have to see.

    This has some (small) potential

    by veritasses

to be good. Dragonball is sort of a Chinese comic/Wuxia hybrid set in a fantasy world. The characters of Goku etc are essentially Chinese in origin to begin with. Now, if this had an American director and producer attached to it, I'd give up all hope. And although James Wong as director doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, hopefully Chow's influence will turn this into a Shaolin Soccer-like or better yet, classic/prime Jackie Chan, light kung fu comedy goodness. Granted, I wouldn't bet the farm on this being good. It's more likely that it'll be another Van Dammed/Street Fighter mess. But there is a chance that it might actually surprise us and be something pretty watchable.

    Actually

    by vadakinx

I'm not some whiney fanboy writing fan fiction. I'm about to go into production on a film. I'm not american-based so the writers strike doesn't affect me (though it would if I had gone for DragonBall. Sure, I'm a fan of the manga and the show, but I don't worship it. I see its flaws, and it was a challenge in some cases working around them.

I wasn't working on my DB proposal because of some fanboy dream. I had an angle that I thought would work and make for a kick-ass film that worked for both the casual audience and the fan, so I decided to go for it. Ultimately, time was against me and I wish the guys doing the film well, though so far I'm not liking what's coming out of that production.

Maybe i'm just comparing it to my own work and so judging it unfairly, in which case I apologise. But even if that's the case, it seems a lot of people agree with me about the direction the production is going in.

It goes without saying he's young and naive. You don't need to point this out and insult him to make yourselves feel better. He says he wrote a script, which is an accomplishment no matter how good or bad it is. It shows he is using his imagination to an extent that most people never will. So what do you do when a kid shows initiative and attempts a naive but creative endeavor? Shit all over him of course. Way to go winners.

    by tk 421

I always thought so! Thanks for confirming it! And my heart weeps for the poor little talk-backer who posted about this great script he wrote and then got shot down by other nasty, mean talk-backer(s). I bet 90% of people who post here wrote a piece of shit script sometime in their lives, including me. Writing a garbage script doesn't a life accomplishment make. You wanna put yourself up there like your shit doesn't stink? Fine, but expect to take some shots sunshine. That's part of life and you better get used to it. And if taking shots at someone else hits a little too close to home for you then more pity to you too jack.

    All the guy said

    by sick fixx

was that he spent time crafting his own version of a DBZ movie script. I see no sane justification for ridicule there. He wanted to share information that was close to his imagination and he has no obligation to 'take his medicine', tk 421, because you feel it necessary to dole it out. Sick of this fucking 'pwnage' society we're growing into.

    by vadakinx

Shot down by a fellow Star Wars fan...at least i assume you are given your username (TK-421, why aren't you at your post?).

I'm not going to respond with immature remarks that have no meaning whatsoever, i mean it's not as if you're my next door neighbour, so I can't beat you up...not that i would, I'm strictly non-violent.

You probably won't see my movie...there's no explosions (was that immature? maybe). It's an independant film, that may never be seen outside of festivals (though it's not arthouse).

Anyways, I'm well aware that coming on here acting like I'm the god of all things dragonball is just asking for trouble. And maybe I seemed arrogant, for which i apologise. Maybe my DB idea is crap, I guess i was just pissed off i never had the chance to find out. I can handle being rejected, the job comes with plenty...and to be honest my agent thought i was kinda crazy for even thinking about Dragonball. He thought i should be concentrating on so-called character studies and serious dramas.

I always knew dragonball was a long shot, but dammit, what's the point in having an idea if you don't at least try to follow through?

Anyways it's overwith now. I hope the movie turns out well.

    Oh and for the record...

    by vadakinx

i didn't actually write a script for the film. I did bits and pieces sure, but i wasn't stupid enough to write a script for a movie adaptation i wasn't involved with. The work I did was mostly on the pitch, with a lengthy treatment for 2 films and outlines for more, as well as some concept art a comic book artist friend of mine was kind enough to do.

But as I said, it's over now. I can get back to the dramas my agent loves so much (for money I'm sure :P )

    Peace.

Whoever the retarded fuck is who said earlier that James Marsters should play Vegeta instead of Piccolo... dude you're an idiot. For one thing, Vegeta is SHORTER than Goku, and James Marsters has at least half a foot on Justin Chatwin (Goku). Vegeta is a short muscular dude not a tall lanky dude. Marsters is good as Piccolo.

And have been for 25 years. Yet I still fail to see the appeal of the DRAGONBALL series. I've long felt his original series, the satirical DR. SLUMP was far better. Where else can you see Clint Eastwood as a barber, and Superman as a used tire salesman? Not to mention buildings which resemble BIC lighters?

    It would work as Wuxia

    by veritasses

or Jackie Chan style movie. I posted this above but the more I think about it, the more I think it's not all hopeless. And I agree with Starwolf. Dr. Slump was a better manga but it would be much harder to pull off in a live action format. Maybe someone like Tim Burton could do it though. And yes, the world wide DB audience is huge. You'd be surprised how many ordinary people in Japan know that show intimately. DB wouldn't make my favorite anime list but to be fair, the translation changes the anime and it's also a story that has a stronger cultural connection with Asian countries.

Sounds like Double Dragon or Super Mario Bros.

    by drath

Or other 90s shit fests like Judge Dredd, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter. I'm picturing lots of crappy sound stages and amped up Matrix effects to make it look cool (oh yeah and lots of nerds to remind us that the Warchowskis were basing the Matrix fights off of Dragonball Z so it CAN'T be a Matrix rip off). That anime just doesn't lend itself over to live action, and I think movie makers will trip over themselves trying to adapt it. I'm not that big a fan of it either, it it is very much a creature of the medium that is anime, and it doesn't have much of a plot to adapt--I think you'd have more luck adapting Fooly Cooly actually. I'd love to see Justin Chatwin, still living off of my good will for Chumbscrubber, to land a movie career and not be "the kid that shoulda died" for the online crowd, but this sounds like it'll do for his career what Double Dragon did for Scott Wolf. Maybe he can still get a role on a TV show or something.

    Fanboys?

    by ramiel

Man, I've ALREADY worked in the business, the most recent project I did was on a 3D animated movie, planned for a European release before the production company screw it up with their money issues (now that movie will be "converted" to a TV series)...
I'm NOT a writer (I mean that it's not my job), but I did a script with a friend of mine that IS a writer, and when we did it, we were just thinking: "hey, that Matrix movie was really cool, if the SFX will be better than this in the near future, they could do whatever they want on the big screen..." so we were thinking about the possibilites, and one of them was the Transformers.
We did a script, and few years later (we started the works in '99 and we finished in '04) there was a rumor about a possible Transformers movie, and we simply give it up...
So, it wasn't "fan-fiction" (which, most of it, it's better than some crappy movies that have seen the light of the day), it was just a script, done mostly for fun, but a script nonetheless... If you can do something productive other than "bashing" people, feel free to let us know.
And this is not an "angry" post or something, just a little explanation. There are a lot of people involved in a movie, I'm involved just in the pre-production stage, so my "connections" could be somewhat "weak" (speaking of producers), but if I really want to show a script to someone I have many ways to do it. With that project, we simply didn't have the chance, so I'm not complaining, I'm just telling you, that something similar to what happened to vadakinx, has happened to me as well (and if you are a fan of that particular "world", this could be a little frustrating, especially if you know that the actual script of the movie isn't true to its original source). That's it.
    Peace.
