    by playhouse

Can anyone who has seen this in an IMAX theater comment on the quality? We're obviously getting a distorted version caught at weird angles through vidcam phones or whatever. Is the sequence polished and "final cut" ready? It seems like it at points and then at other points it feels like it is still a working print. Can those that have seen this in person comment?

I've seen it in Imax. I don't think it's that bad of quality. It is the finished print since this prologue will be playing in front of something on Imax until the release in June. It is way better than the trailer quality that is going around but I would still tell you to go to Imax to see it if you can. It's honestly unfuckingbelievable in that size and quality.

same clown mask flaw in film already

    by thepilgrim

The clown that gets hit with the bus- his mask is used for another character- and whats worse that mask has the same debris shard hanging on the forhead. So it's not just the same style of mask- it's the same mask, but theres no way in hell that it's the same guy who gets hit with the bus. They need to fix that! Cause it's not supposed to be the same guy. Love this opener by the way!

A villian who actually does real evil on the screen. This certainly sets up the Joker as an intelligent, scheming, cold-blooded criminal threat. So many comic villians are portrayed as cute, costume-wearing, "dialogue-ing" wusses that one wonders if they are really dangerous at all. This footage leaves no doubt about Nolan's Joker- Kick Ass.

as long the entire movie works like a cat & mouse game between the creative joker and an even more creative batman things will work fine. And please, less "Rachel" this time please. And I would really love to see them break the mold by having Batman in plain daylight, a crime can happen outside at any time, Batman shouldn't be confined by darkness, otherwise he's just a supercop with shifted hours.

I am Legend was actually pretty decent, but I guess I went in expecting complete shit. Good pacing, seemed like it was 30 minutes long. The CG "vampires" were awful though, after seeing the initial workups I can't believe they didn't just scrap it and get real people.

Actually has kind of a nice 70s/John Carpenter vibe

    by kevred

There's something just a bit hammy & pulpy about the lines and the way they're delivered, which was kind of surprising. And that intersection of visual realism + blunt line delivery (and somewhat showy lines) reminds me, in a good way, of some of Carpenter's best early-to-mid-80s movies, or Dirty Harry flicks, or the like. I really enjoyed that quality of it.

Between the two clips we've seen here, this is starting to look like quite a good film--maybe even the most comfortable fusion yet between our reality and the comic book one.

I hope it's better than the last one. I like Nolan, Bale, Neeson, and the rest of the cast, but it bored me so much that I couldn't even finish it. And the origin sequences seemed like some other movie.

Looking at these new clips, I can now see Begins as just setting the tone and changing the expectations. I think the DC villain collection pales to that of Marvel, but this makes me think there is more good "re-imagining" material left for DC characters.

It kinda reminds me of a 6-minute teaser in the same vein as the Spider-Man WTC teaser. Nice little introduction to how the Joker operates, but nothing really given away as to the overall structure of the story. The only real spoiler here is that the Joker kills people. And I don't think that's much of a spoiler at all.

    by felix buckman

Agreed, kevred. Go back and watch 'The Conversation' or 'French Connection,' and you can see how it influenced this film as well as 'Heat.' I love the efficiency of the storytelling -- how much context they provide in such a short amount of time, e.g., how Joker set up this heist, who they're hitting, how entrenched the mob is in Gotham, and so forth. Frankly, I'm stunned at how good it looks. This clip totally cements my opening day attendance.

The only reason Joker would ever rob a bank as such would be to have money to perpetrate a scheme of his. Joker only commits crimes because he thinks they are funny. That's what's unique, and frightening about the character. He doesn't care about being rich, or having power, he only seeks those factors to have the ability to commit grand violent schemes just for the sake of his own morbid sense of humor.

That big cheesy subway scene from Begins wasn't done in CG. It was done using huge models (including the entire crash sequence) with subtle CG enhancement via Batman jumping out of it and the monorail tracks themselves; however a lot of the stuff with Bats hanging down from the cars was also real.

Oh, I know, you're absolutely right, I just meant that, I got tired of super criminals in comic book movies who just destroyed things. I dunno how things are now, but when I read comics, the villains (including the Joker) didn't have day jobs and they stole stuff and robbed banks, you know, to make money. But yeah to the Joker the money itself certainly would be a much smaller concern than raising hell and amusing himself. I guess therefore it's ironic that the first real "villain robs a bank" scebe in a comic book movie would feature The Joker. (I don't count Doc Ock in SM2 because he specifically was going to use the money to rebuild his thingamajig. Still not right... uhh... I'm tired of bad guys being good guys gone bad.

    by kafka07

Definitely has a 70's vibe. And love the way they portray him not only as theatrical, and psychopathic/homocidal, but also a cunning criminal mind. Batsy will have to become more of a detective in this one. Hopefully they'll release an official version of this online soon. Ain't no IMAX theater near me that I can see this on, sadly.

Burton's Batman films are still the benchmark for me- dents (no pun intended) and all. I just can't stand this "realistic" approach to a guy who dresses up as a bat. All the exposition and dull attempts to fold in political thriller or heist style film making only make more clear the faults of these films. With no sense of wonder, intrigue or even spectacle- they become rip-offs of better written films- only with weirdly dressed characters who feel the need to explain every action they commit. I for one am not looking forward to a batman film with a "realistic" anything. What's the point?

Something about that didn't flow right

    by chaseguy17

Obviously there is going to be bias because it's a videocamera recording, and the sound was muffled. It also could be a rough cut. it just seemed like they didn't get the message across as clearly, for someone in the general audience to fully understand what was going on. It was just too quick. If I hadn't read up on it, I wouldn't really found the scene very compelling.

They should have had a longer conversation with one of the goons, talking about how he got recruited...and then maybe some fear in his voice explaining..."he told me to kill so and so when he finished his job". The thug conversations in that cut...just seemed rather sloppy...and probably confusing. I didn't like how it flowed. Maybe i'm just weird.

    by industrykiller!

No he is not advocating a Joel Schumacher cheese filled cartoon. He advocating something with a little more life in it than what Nolan imbued. Something just a bit outside of our world, considering that Batman couldn't exist here and Batman Begins, despite what people like to think, didn't further the cause that he could.

    Thylacine is absolutely right...

    by hypnotron

Chris Nolan's attempts to make Batman seem like a realistic possibility make these new movies in many ways far sillier than those that have come before it.

Batman is a silly idea, there is nothing profound about it, its just about a weird rich guy who gets dressed up in a Batsuit and fights other weirdos in costumes.

The killing joke is about the most honest Batman comic because at least it deals with this issue...Batman Begins took itself so seriously it is pretty much laughable 'unless they have a microwave emitter powerful enough to evaporate Gotham's water supply'....I mean come on, thats not much more credible than the Anti-shark spray from the 60's film! Both are equally ridiculous, just one of them has a $200,000,000 budget! So this will have great stunts and effects, but so what, lots of films have that. But I guess the Freudian weirdness of Batman is a big draw for a lot of rabid geeks who don't see it as such!

Realism and Batman (re: Thylacine, IndustryKiller, hypnotron)

    by crestfallen

The (re)depictions of the Batman mythos necessarily requires fantasy elements; certainly Batman could not exist in the real, modern world. Nolan's first foray muted many of the explicit fantasy elements (Ra's Al Ghul's immortality; the gothic, ethereal atmosphere, etc.) but not entirely.

Most films and fictional characters require some suspension of disbelief; even Jason Bourne, despite the gritty "realism" of those films is ultimately implausible in reality.

It's a modern notion that fantasy must have some imbued with some realism in order for it to resonate with viewers. This may be nothing more than believable characters who respond in plausible ways to their atypical, fantasy situations.

Batman has always been one of the more "realistic" of superheroes, with little scifi or supernatural/paranormal elements. His motivation is clear and makes sense within its own narrative. Nolan respects the Batman mythos; in no way is the material taken lightly. It is played straight. Whereas, "Batman and Robin" seems created as a self-parody, inherently mocking the very story and characters it purports to tell.
Schumacher drifted towards the campy elements of Batman where Nolan has taken the recent serious presentation and gritty realism of the comics which place Batman in a society and world view much like our own. I personal prefer Nolan's take, so far, to that of Burton and most definitely Schumacher.

"Batman" is a silly idea. So is every other guy/gal who dresses up in a costume to fight crime or is born with a mutant "superpower".However, the fact that BATMAN BEGINS portrayed a legendary comic book character in a more realistic manner does not make these films "far sillier". In fact, quite the opposite. It's the realism that makes one feel that real consequences are at stake.Nolan managed to make a film about a "silly idea" that wasn't silly. He crafted an intelligent and emotionally involving story that didn't make (a lot of) people feel stupid about watching another goofball superhero movie. In the process, he overcame the god-awful taste left by the Goth-camp franchise that proceeded him. So, I'd say that most folks are looking forward to what TDK has in store because of this approach.

...Begins was the first and so far only Superhero film that worked for me. I don't believe they took it in a more realistic direction either, they just treated it like a worthy film concept. They put time and attention into the development of the characters and stories and created a world, that although closer to ours than those of the gaudy stage looking Burton flicks, was not in anyway realistic, but perfectly supportive of the character. Without having to resort to stupidity to justify it. I think Begins worked perfectly at making people like me, who detest comic book superheroes, actually get interested in one. Understandably fans probally don't agree, since they like their favourite characters to look retarded.

The "attention" paid to teh characters in Begins

    by industrykiller!

certainly didn't extend to the villains of The Scarecrow and Ras Al Ghul, who were treated as little more than window dressing. It also didn't extend that far into Bruce Wayne. There was nothing in the Begins origin story about Bruce Waynes character that one couldn't have easily devised on their own given the circumstances. The fact that He'll never get over his parents death and uses Batman as a symbol of justice are not anywhere near fresh ideas int he Batman lore. It basically spent an hour stating teh obvious and showing us a piss poor training sequence that couldn't in a million years resulted in Bruce Wayne becoming the greatest human fighter on the planet Earth, which he is supposed to be. It also neutered the fact that Bruce Wayne is also one of the most brilliant minds humanity has to offer.

As for Fox covering up for Wayne, dude Waynetech would have spent millions upon millions constructing a vehicle like that, there would be tons of engineers working on the technology to make it happen as well as corporate suits checking in on where the progress is on this thing they are investing so heavily in, not to mention the governments whose militaries would be interested in purchasing it and the people who originally rejected the design. There would have been tens if not hundreds of people with intimate knowledge on the Batmobile.

Ok Yack, on a metaphorical level I can see where

    by industrykiller!

you are coming from. Some of the themes it's working with are present, although Goyer drills the theme of fear into your head far too much. And I really should say before I go on that I'm harsh, but I don't think it's a horrible movie without any merit. But I think on an execution level maybe they tried to fit so much in that it becomes a master of none of it. The origin story is the best ever put to screen, it's also the only one ever put to the big screen. I think as far as smaller stories of young Bruce Wayne go the few episodes of the animated series in which it shows Wayne training with his former master are the best around. But in the film the actual training of Bruce Wayne is present but rushed, I would rather have it implied and fill in my own blanks than have a montage that looks like it took place over about a month of time and doesn't even come close to delving deep enough into the mechanics of how Bruce Wayne became the single greatest fighter of crime in the world. It's very very uneven. You speak a lot of Ras Al Ghul, I felt the character was done no justice in Begins. He exists solely as a platform for Bruce Wayne to leap from into Batman rather as a character with nuance of his own and one of the greatest villains in Batman's cache. Same goes for The Scarecrow. There is a reason why Spider Man and Batman are maybe the two greatest traditional superheroes, and a large part of that is their amazing rogues gallery. If you waste the villains, you waste a big part of the hero. There is a reason after all that whenever the Joker shows up in Batman's life he becomes the focal point of the story, and that is because he may in fact be more interesting than Batman himself. But that's up for debate.

    by industrykiller!

absurd things that conveniently allow Bruce Wayne to get away with it through a series of coincidences. I'm presenting the inner workings of every corporation in the world. Once is more logical than the other here. The point you haven't attempted to contend is the strongest point, and that is that hundreds of people int eh past would have seen this thing, that is just factually the way it would have gone down. Someone would recognize it considering there isn't another tank car with a rocket engine around. Also the cops would have had helicopters chasing him, which is standard procedure for any high speed chase. but then again I suppose I can't win because you will come up with some imaginary budget cuts in the police force that unfortunately made it a necessity to sell all their helicopters to Metropolis.

    the thing with the internet...

    by greenstyle92

is that it polarizes views. Begins is far from a bad movie. But it's not a perfect Batman movie sent down from heaven either. It's pretentious, but not nearly as pretentious as the Spider-man sequels are. (Raimi, if all you wanted to make were a couple of movies about a shy, socially awkward nerd who inspite of himself manages to date a Grade-7 girl, you should have just made that, instead of making those movies and trying to convince me they were Spider-man movies.)

Like it or not, you kind of have to think that the Batman franchise is using the "auter" approach. I know that's not what anyone intended, but that's just what's happened. If you want a perfectly made iconic, definitive Batman, that's the 92-97 cartoons. With the Batman films, you just have to know that every 2 or so they bring in a new director who's going to do a wildly different take on the character. None of the Batman films will be definitive and hit every fan's G-spot, but they don't have to be. Each interpretation has brought us something of value, and added to the overall fabric of the Batman myth.

For the sake of Geek Cred, my favorite Modern Superhero movies are X-men 1 and 2, followed By Begins. Then Spider-man 1, then X-men 3, then Spider-man 3, then Spider-man 2, and so on in that fashion...

It's a whole movie about Tobey Maguire staring blankly at the wall of his little apartment, looking like he's either about to cry or that he really needs to take a shit but is out of TP, as he mutters the name Mary Jane over and over again. The same Mary Jane who is a total selfish golddigger with desperate needs for attention, causing her to be a drama queen. Peter, Dude, I know that you got your first orgasm because you saw Mary Jane take her training bra off through your bedroom window and you starting yanking your crank, but it's time to move on to girls who aren't totally lame. aside from a little extra chunk, Gwen would definitely have been a trade up. Seemed she had a life that didn't totally revolve around herself.

    by space disc jockey

Too bad the video cropped the bottom, but damn that was fucking great! Reminds you of Heat, but I love what Nolan has done here. This is the evil Joker we have been waiting for. As for the complaints about it taking place in the day...um, I think that was a great move. Instead of having it take place at night, I think it's more interesting to have a "dark" scene, take place during the day. Yes, we have seen movies that have bank robberies take place, during the day, but this was a better approach, than having the Joker rob the bank at night.

I also noticed that the Joker didn't leave a card, but maybe he did and we just didn't see it. It would've been nice if he threw, or placed the card near or on William, before leaving.

    by greenstyle92

At it's very best, Dead end is like a decent fan fic. Better than you expected, but definitely not the real deal. Then the Aliens and Predators show up. And not just Aliens and Predators, (Excellent movies with shitty sequels,) but Alien VS. Predator. (Which is a separate franchise because it just sucks so much. If AvP were really part of the Alien Canon, it wouldn't matter how masterful the first two alien films are, you'd have to classify the Alien films as a franchise that by and large sucks.

    by thylacine

I guess I like my Batman more romantic, and a bit more thoughtful than what's been coming out since Burton left. The characters just weren't as interesting to me in Begins. The sterling moment in the Batman films, for me, is when Selina asks Bruce if they have to start fighting, when they realize who each other are. People who fight in masks, going to a costume party out of costume. The way they interact, and the situation that conversation takes place in, make the characters real- rather than just explainging where they buy their gadgets from. Burton was able to invest in his characters a sense of place, where Begins just takes a real world place, sticks some fake buildings in, and then proceeds to tell you where Batman got all his stuff from. If Burton's movie's suffer from anything- it's that they're dated firmly in the 90's, often relying on one liners (most of them very good) and stunt casting (most of them very good) that show their age.

About the batmobile in Begins. I was thinking those same points as I was watching the movie. Also, secret society of Ninjas engineering the fall of Rome, etc. went way too far. But you know what? Despite all that I still loved Begins. There were scenes that totally resonated with me. For me it was truly great from casting right down to its ubiquitous Fear theme. I knew it was the sign of a great movie when not even the row of teenagers in front of me paging and texting the shit out of their cell phones and making snide comments on the movie did absolutely NOTHING to ruin it for me. That's the ultimate in invincible theater experience right there. It was like the movie itself was batman, blocking and returning everything thrown at it. Truly one of the most memorable theater experiences I've had.

As far as BB goes, it was the closest summarization to Miller's Year One on the screen. But I agree with the other posters comments on not involving the elements of Batman's escape artistry talents by Zatana's father or the fact he has a background in forensic and chemical
sciences. Wayne/Batman is a great deductive thinker who picks up on the subtleties that others miss at a crime scene, murder investigation or etc. AND Cmon its fucking comic book movie, disbelief is needed but fuck me sideways I dont want another fucking BAT movie where he carries around a BAT AMERICAN express card or see some neo gothic SEAL embraced gotham city. I would have loved this movie to be a killing joke adaptation but i don't think it would work after BB as well as mainstream audiences could stomach it and there's obviously the Moore factor. All in all this movie will be a fantastic if not decent, please for the love of fuck sake stop the hating because if I ever see another fucking retarded singing MR. freeze or a emo version of SUPERFAG i'm gonna gouge my eyes

    How old are your kids?
Are they even old enough to be the key age for reading 'THE DARK KNIGHT' comics? The problem isnt with this version of Batman, this is the truest version of Batman that exists and the majority of fans realise this is the version that they expect and want - not because of the material, but because of the world they live in, this Batman reflects 'the real world' more than the 70's tv show and shcumacher's movies which are just laughable nowadays(If i had kids i wouldnt let them watch those because i would want them growing up with some taste).

There is no way you can be serious.... What incarnation of Batman did you think was acceptable? If you don't feel like this is appropriate for your kids then don't take them or complain about it either. Since when was Batman MRX67 Jr. friendly? was it when Batman took a gothic turn in film in the late 80s, or when the Batman villains were killing and raping in the comic books?Would you also rather Batman fight a missionary joker who donates to charity and leaves Christian message tracts wherever he thinks there's a need for God's love. Batman not fighting bad people is bad for film and bad for your kids. Kind of sends a mixed message 'ya know... Your decision as a father for this pretty good interpretation of how a Batman film should be is your own business. I can understand you choosing not to take them. You're the only one who knows your kids and what they can handle. I'm even going to help you out a bit on your decision and make you aware that it probably is going to be pg-13 for a reason( the same as the previous batman movies which seem your children are already fans of)....With all due respect your parental guidance according to your children's age and supposed maturity level are not the universal standard for this movie or any Batman stories, so please don't complain and ruin it for the rest of the class.

are welcome to their opinions, but I can't see how they arrived at them.

Begins was made by the director of Momento and The Prestige. It starred the actor from Equilibrium and American Psycho, surrounded by the BEST cast in any comic/superhero film...PERIOD.

And all involved did their finest work to make the most realistic, awesome, dark, serious version of Batman seen yet.

It may not be without plotholes or snags, but it's clearly the BEST version we've had to date.

If you're not allowing your kids to see a movie that you don't feel they're old enough to see yet then.... good for you! You're doing your job as a parent. You're kids aren't supposed to love you because you're their friend let's them do everything they want, they love you because your their (gasp!) Dad! I have kids. I'm so sick of the world being about just kids. It isn't. If you truly did read the old, original Batman comics, they were DARK. He was called the Dark Knight, for Christ's Sake. It wasn't the Adam West TV show. This is exactly what Batman is supposed to be, and if you don't think it is appropriate for your kids, then tell them so and don't let them watch. That's part of being a parent. It doesn't make you right. Kids aren't violent because of video games or movies. If you read the profiles of the kids that have been involved in school shootings, it's a pretty simple profile, and almost the same in all cases...absent parents who don't spend time with their kids and pay attention to them. Kids need attention. Take em to the damn movie and talk to them about it, and your kids will turn out fine. Man, I'm so SICK of the BS from all the whackos that think we can create some perfect world just for kids. That world doesn't exist, and you're missing what causes the problems anyway.

First of all, ignore the douches in this TB. I understand your problem, but I think you have to stop thinking in such black and white terms. You're a guy who clearly has an interest in this movie (that's why you're here talking about it) but you feel like it's not appropriate for your kids. Your kids want to see it because it's Batman. Fair enough. Explain to your kids that they can see it when they're a bit older, and placate them by treating them to something Batman-related that is age-appropriate - like a dvd of the animated series. Take them to see a different movie that they will enjoy. Take them to another activity. Get them some Batman comic books and read it with them. Play a game with them. Something. There's no need for you to be a bad father in their eyes, you just need to think it through a little...

The big question is: Why should Batman only be for kids? It's not like the subject matter can't handle stuff a little more weighty and interesting to an adult audience. Certainly stories that involve crime on some level have an adult appeal to them as well. There is no logical reason Batman can't be aimed at an older age bracket, and in the end, it's not yours or my decision to make. It's being made that way whether you like it or not. Balk at it all you like, it's not going to stop the movie from being released except to your tailored expectations.

    Batman Begins...

    by that 70s venom

... there were things that I liked and things that I didn't like about Batman Begins, just like there were things that I liked and things that I didn't like about Burton's films. One of the annoying things about Batman Begins was that redundant musical score that pulsed along throughout the entire movie. You know, having that musical score would've been nice, but in moderation. Is there even a single scene in the whole movie where you don't have riveting action music playing in the background? Hell, you can even hear it right at the beginning when Bruce is playing with Rachel as a child. I'd rather watch the movie with the volume muted and subtitles on. Nolan seriously needs to cut a Director's version of the film and tone down the fucking tedious music.

Well I usually don't get high and watch movies, so the steady pulsating musical score wasn't a problem for me.. if fact I kind of like it.. sort of reminded me of John Carpenter's movies.. by mistahtibbs

My 3 kids, 6, 9 & 11 love to watch the kids movies and I even took my 11 yo to see Transformers and found the horny Shia bit with the hottie and the parents mentioning masturbation to be unnecessary for a movie that kids will be watching. Having said that I'm looking forward to watching a whole slew of flicks with my kids when they're old enough where we can have a conversation, if necessary, and where their world-view is a little more firmly entrenched (yeah, I'm a Xtian)...if that makes sense. They want to see the Harry Potter movies, LOTR, those sorts of films and we'll watch them as they get older.
I'm a parent I have responsiblities. I'd LOVE to watch Nolan's Batman with my oldest but it's just too intense at this time. Mind you MY parents took me to see JAWS when I was 9 and the one-eyed head in the hole in the boat scared the bejeezus out of me and yet it's one of my favourite films.

    Batman

    by grendel69

I remember reading Batman comics in the 70s as a wee little kid that were scary. The Joker killed people. Batman went up against guys with axes and knives. Some of those 70s and even early 80s books bordered on horror. Although Fran Miller is often given credit as making Batman more serious, I think that bullshit. Look at the issues Adams and especially the Gene Colan era. Theres a axe wielding maniac on every cover. As for violent movies,I was watching violent movies at a very early age and Im not disfunctional or have emotional problems. As long as your kid understands that what hes seeing isnt real, it shouldnt be a problem. Not sure how old your kid is MX, but Batman will be PG13. Hell I was watching Halloween,Apocalypse Now,Dirty Harry,Death Wish, The Warriors, etc and dozens of violent kung fu flicks all before the age of 10.
BTW, the trailer and preview kick ass.Cant wait for June

    by grendel69

I also think its funny how people who grew up in a real age of freedom are so overprotective and restrictive nowadays. How many parents here that dont want there kids to see R or even PG13 movies used to go into R movies WITHOUT a adult back in the 70s or 80s? Back when theaters didnt enforce the age restrictions of the ratings system. And Im wrong, remembering where I lived at the time, I must have first seen Dirty Harry and Enter The Dragon when I was 7 or 8 years old not even 10. They had their childish batmans, let us have our Comics version now. Plus the comics code authority is such bullshit, they have no power whatsoever and are there for no reason, they can put the stamp that is barely visible on the cover so the standard comics reader who is over 18 can open it up to find batman at a crime scene with dismembered bodies everywhere.

The fact that Ra's is the most dangerous and powerful villain i've pretty much ever seen(not counting those with superpowers) but it's his mind, the fact that he is unstoppable and doesn't care, that he will kill you to do what he thinks is right and doesn't care if he dies in the process. that scene where he reveals himself to bruce and everything he says, i mean he's destroying a city, that is one of my favourite scenes ever. not just the way it was filmed and the music, but the dialogue, the acting. just amazing.

Yeah the "do it for the kids" argument doesn't fly

    by industrykiller!

If this guys 11 year old can't watch Batman Begins, a tame movie by any capacity when it comes to violence, then that is his kid's problem. I was watching far more brutal films than that when I was his age. I think we can all agree that much of pop culture these days is too watered down and the American public only gets more base in their tastes as time goes on, part of that problem is our ridiculous gladhanding of kids. When I was growing up they had films like Labyrinth and Legend, not to mention films by Jim Cameron and Ridley Scott or other sci fi/fantasy films in which parents of the day were far more apt to let their kids watch than today. Hell they even sold realistic guns in toy stores (oh my!). We need to stop raising our kids on banal tripe, kids like to be scared a little, I know I did. And if they don't understand it, maybe it'll make them think for themselves a bit, and that isn't a bad thing. Hell maybe they'll grow up with some taste and a personality. The kids today who are shooting up schools are the ones who just missed the violent films of the 80's and realistic toy guns. Violence has nothing to do with pop culture and if you blame movies and music for violence then you are taking the blame off the real problem, yourself as a parent.

    by industrykiller!

Take your kids to something a little more advanced. If you are on the fence, see the movie without them first and then decide. A Batman movie is not comparable to the entirety of the internet. Movies certainly haven't gotten more violent, with the exception of the occasional Hostel film. Hardcore porn and real life death and violence on the internet is much different than any incarnation of The Joker, no matter how dark he may seem. And just to put a prologue on that last post, I don't think Labyrinth and Legend are all that violent, but if they were released today parents would bitch about the scary images, which their kids would undoubtedly still love and not turned into a deranged killer from seeing.

Obviously inpired by Mann, has FEEL of "HEAT"

    by jdanielp

The people whom are comparing this opening to Michael Mann's style...and Mann's "HEAT"...aren't alone. I immediately had that impression upon watching this. And I absolutely LOVE that about it! And THIS is exactly what gets me fired up for "THE DARK KNIGHT", while not nearly as much upon seeing the full-length trailer. Don't get me wrong, as the trailer makes the flick look interesting enough. It's just that I feel that...while only judging from "BATMAN BEGINS" and what little we've seen of "THE DARK KNIGHT", there's a lack of focus on certain elements of Batman, mostly from a visual perspective. Yet, this sequel may give our title character more depth. (And that would be a good thing.) But there continues to be that artist in me that wants that visual pop, even while maintaining Nolan's more lifelike take. Batman's suit should be a knock-out of coolness,...while true to the basic/iconic image we know, and yet still be functional. (For the life of me, I don't understand the problem in design, despite the obvious challenges.) I really do love this opening....while I crave much more from our title character. (And by the way, those whom want to dissect this opening with film school reasoning, dismissing a connection to the work of Michael Mann, are getting it all wrong. This is about how it FEELS more than anything else. And in my book, you're not seeing the forest because of the trees. And I'd compare how a movie FEELS to the forest, while the techniques used are the trees, if you get my meaning.)

    On the subject of 'dark'.

    by mr gorilla

If a film is 'dark' that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Nuff said.

    Parents: Just Say No

    by asswhole

I have two kids, 6 and 4. My oldest boy (then 4) wanted to see Batman Begins but I told him no. I had seen a midnight show of Begins and saw some idiot parents laughing at their 4 year old shake and cry and scream when the Scarecrow pulled out his hallucinating shit. (The kid was covering his eyes, but his dad gleefully pulled his hands away, whispering, "Oh come on, watch, watch.") I was mortified. So yes, I was strong enough to be my son's bad guy and say no to his repeated requests. This argument about Batman being for kids is bullshit. Does that mean I should assume Will Ferrell in the "Land of the Lost" film version will be kid friendly just because the show I grew up with was? And who would be to blame if I haul my kids to said movie and my little ones witness Will mounting a female Sleestak from behind and grinding away? Being a parent sucks sometimes because you have to say no; with that territory may come tantrums, crying, etc. My kids want to see the Scooby Doo movies; I say no because I also don't want their brains to rot. You pick your battles. Be the parent and stop blaming the filmmakers for their adult treatment on your beloved nostalgic characters. In other words, grow up.

    Parents: Addendum

    by asswhole

Oh, and just because a company makes a movie tie-in toy doesn't necessarily mean that you, as a parent, have to buy that hunk of plastic. Nor does it mean that you have to force your kid to watch the movie if you have indeed purchased that movie tie-in action figure. I don't blame the companies for trying to make a buck. But I'd blame myself if I succumbed because I felt like I HAD to get that movie ticket or tie-in toy because my kiddo was inundated with commercials. Find the spine, parents.

Chief, I hate to flame, but "innocent" statements like what you make are what is wrong with this country....

Placing blame on everything and everyone else.....

    Do you have kids yourself?

Obviously, they did - since it's been pulled from YouTube. The reason why? Simple. WB also owns and stands to make money on I Am Legend, the movie which this clip is EXCLUSIVELY attached to. It helps to generate interest in I Am Legend, which, in turn, puts more money into the pockets of Warner Brothers (and their sister Dot).Marketing, my friend.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES opening day...Parents take pre-teen daughter

    by t 1000 xp professional

Crap i just remembered this horrible instance. When the movie came out this girl toddler was watching The hills have eyes sitting right next to me ..Every now and then after the not so bright parents slowly registered a strong scene(rape scene, dad burning at the stake) they would give a delayed reaction 5 minutes later covering the child's eyes, sometimes they wouldn't even do anything and be in shock themselves.( a funny/stupifying instance was the mom getting freaked out then jumping to her right hugging her also scared husband while turning her head away from the screen. Her daughter was to her left by the way). During all of this you can tell the kid was in shock with her eyes wide open not having a single clue whats going on the screen...Wow... those retards were bugging me so much that I ran out of the dirty guilt inducing looks and I arrived at the point of the burden being placed on me of actually telling this parentally impaired couple something. Telling a parent what to do with their kids is not an easy or tactful thing, so I was kind of dreading this. I leaned over and respectfully(the most I could) and humbily told the mom if she really thought her daughter should be here. She gave me this blank ashamed stare and nodded told her husband and left the theatre with the kid..... just decided to share that with you guys, and i'm also sure it bugs a bunch of you when you hear a young kid cry in some crazy R movie. "What the hell, a kid's in here?!"

Man, the whole kid thing ...

    by dr.poots

The problem with ratings on TV, film and music these days is that the people who enforce them fail to realize that you can't enforce responsibility. How anyone could think to bring a small child to The Hills Have Eyes is beyond reason. We're not talking Batman here; heck, we're not even talking Jaws. Hills is non-stop heavy stuff, from what I've been lead to believe. That some jackasses decided that a night of leisure was more important than properly caring for their daughter is evidence of the flaws of the ratings systems of all media.
