Merrick here...

I'm thinking THIS might be the place.

If so, seems Sunday will be the time.

Thanks to LA for pointing us this direction.

    by greenstyle92

I'm just waiting for the lengthy write up on the size of the various cod pieces the actors had on there costumes. Lord knows there were a lot of Cod piece stories for Batman and Robin in '97. (And that's actually, factually true. I saw the story in at least 3 places that Chris O'Donnell had a huge cod piece on his Robin suit, and an insulted and insecure Clooney insisted his had to be even bigger, even if it meant being stuffed with socks.)

    ...can't wait!
Nolan has proven himself worthy in everything he's touched - I can't see him screwing this gig up, either.
I still reckon David Bowie would've been a top Joker, though...

    Joker overexposure aside...

    by greenstyle92

TDK is at least one of the very few sequels that keeps it's promises to fans. At the end of Batman Begins, Nolan practically steps onto the stage, looks straight into the camera, addresses each audience member by name, and says, "In the next one, I'm going to use the Joker and it's gonna be cool. Scout's honor." 2.5 years later, and what do we have? More Coolness and Joker-ness than we can handle. I didn't agree with everything Nolan did on Begins, but I gotta give him props for kept promises.

Has me wondering what it is about the plot that makes Bruce Wayne uncertain about what he's supposed to do? Um, didn't we learn that in the last movie? Stop the bad guy? What are all these qualms? I do like Nolan / Ledger's darker Joker. Rings truer than Nicholson's clown version. You couldn't repeat that in this day and age and expect to be taken seriously.

This new Golden Age of Blockbusters....

    by dauphin534

is definitely coming to an end soon. I'd bet that after this big slate of 2008 movies, followed by the few that are already in production for 2009, we won't see many more blockbusters like this. The market is oversaturated, and there's no way they can all be successful. Week after week these big movies are tanking at the box office. There's no way the studios will keep investing in such expensive flicks.

This is Nolan and Ledger's Joker, not fucking DC. It's not as though the canon is so legendary it can't be touched. He fell into some chemicals ffs and suddenly he looks like The Joker. Hmmm, I'd take what Nolan is doing over that ANY friggin day. Just think yourselves damned lucky he isn't having The Joker being responsible for Bruce's parents' deaths.

and it was better. I saw it with I Am Legend (okay movie. Will Smith saves it.) I walked into another showing of I Am Legend just before the trailers began to play. ....all day, every day, by the hour, on the hour. Let the fellating begin. Oh wait,.......... it already did. AICN's oncoming Dark Night blowjob onslaught for this movie does not portend well for its fortunes at the Box office. History has shown as that whenever Harry and Co, start fellating a movie like this, it usually underperforms like saggy bitch. Exhibit A, B and C.........Golden Compass, King Kong, Superstalker Returns, Domino,........should I go on?

Ok, I've watched the trailer about 20 times now...

    by reynard muldrake

and I have to give major props to Ledger - I could get into all the little details about the slight inflections, the body language (there are definitely some small reminders of Nicholson, but nothing like THAT), the straight sinister seriousness of what he's about...but I won't , even though I just did. I think he's got something VERY 'real' about the 'real' Joker going on , if you know what I mean - the "who gives a fuck" serial killer made all the more fucknuts by the fact that he's the only one laughing - the way the Joker SHOULD be represented. And yeah, what Mirajeff said about them needing to focus on The actual DARK KNIGHT for 'The Dark Knight'...I trust Nolan...but seriously - this is part of a larger opus, and a trailer is a trailer in the end, let the product end up speaking for itself. End patronizing talkback post.

the only reason you think it's silly is because you see it from the point of view of a guy that lives in a world where comics exist and you know that batman is a superhero. put yourself in the Begins world. No superhero comic books. Criminals being assaulted by a guy dressed like a Bat who can fight, he swarms from the shadows and they don't know if he's myth or not, just that he can take anyone on, he's unstoppable and he scares them when they see him. That's not silly. That's wholy possible given the circumstances were different. I say you are not very intelligent.

Batman is generally pretty silly. Just like the majority of comic books and other *graphic novels*. I think the point is that the concept can/could be done in a serious, more sophisticated way. I didn't bother seeing Batman Begins, so I can't comment on whether that's the case in that movie, but there's no denying that a non-ridiculous batman movie would have to be selective and probably innovative about what aspects of the batman property were used.

Dennis O'Neil for getting rid of the Adam West Batman. He paved the way for Miller. Anyway, Burton had a larger role in changing the general public's view of Batman, you know the non-comic book reading populace. Remember, there was actually a petition before the Batman movie came out to cast Adam West as Batman again.

I'm actually think the old Adam West movie, in its time and place, was pretty funny. The problem was it was making fun of Batman, which is fine, but the Batman as buffoon shouldn't be the ideal character in the general consciousness.

Tim Burton's Batman was a critical and box office success, and remains a classic to this day. Batman Begins was as well. Whether you like those movies or not, they are widely considered "great" movies. As for the TV show... that's a camp classic, but very few people on this earth would say it's better than Burton's first movie or Begins. At least you're original, I guess. Tasteless, but original.

Ahem. The reason that I don't, as you suggest, say "I'm a fucking dumb cunt because I decide to weigh in on something that I haven't even seen" is because I *didn't actually weigh in on the something that I haven't even seen.* This is, in fact, obvious from the bit you quote from my previous post. In case you didn't notice during your copying, pasting, and profanity-laced pontificating, I said essentially that since I had not seen Batman Begins, I couldn't comment on it. The actual point of my post was something different: that if you look at the corpus of batman material out there (of which, take notice, I'll happily admit I've only sampled a small amount), there is a lot that is silly, trite, and ridiculous, along with the stuff that is or could be serious, complex, and meaningful, and as such, any film adaptation that aims to be serious, complex, and/or meaningful will have to ignore/junk a lot of the batman material out there. I didn't think that I was being particularly controversial, but having now read a bit more of this thread (and others), and seeing the disturbing number of posts that describe their reactions to the marketing of this film in terms of either orgasm or defecation (sometimes both), I can see I'm going to have to pick my words a bit more carefully. Apologies, messi. I did not intend to hurt your (or batman's) feelings.

Was not from the 70's but the '50's. The '70's were under the domain of Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams. Together they brought back the Dark Knight. Then Miller, with his "Dark Knight Returns" popularity, it got news coverage" was instrumental in getting Warner Bros. to produce a Batman movie.

Burton's first film was great, though I prefer Begins, but sadly "Returns" was pretty to look at but junky story.

I have high hopes for "The Dark Knight".

Oh the silly period was during the '50's when the Comics Approval Code was enforced. They lightened up Batman who in the beginning was dark.

No, I Am Bratwurst, you're wrong. Begins is a great movie. It's a great "Batman" movie. It is, in fact, bat-tacular. The Godfather is great, seeing as it's THE archetype example of a "gangster/drama" film. 12 Angry Men is a great "courtroom drama." Face/Off is a great waste of time. These things become more evident when you think about them and then talk them out. Logic rocks.

It has a big 8 and 28, so expect it at 8:28, Sunday. It's the same thing as Joker's bus, in the bank robbery scene having District 22 on the side. It's a nod to Two-Face and his vendetta against Harvey Dent.

    The Joker's end

    by jdl82

Oh I definetely expect the Joker to end up in Arkham at the end of this film. Personally, I found it quite arrogant of Burton to kill off two-thirds of the villains his films featured (Catwoman alone survived Burton's pen). Likewise, I was none-too-pleased that Shumaker killed Two-Face like he did. While it is, indeed, unfortunate that Harry Osborn died, I think that we can all agree that his death -- while contrary in many ways to comic canon -- was dealt with respectfully. And let's not forget that unlike Venom, his character was allowed to develop and mature over the course of not one or two but three entire films.
As for Raz'al Ghul, I, too, was disappointed that he died. And then I remembered that he is immortal in comic canon, and all became well.
My personal expectations for TDK, with regard to the way that it will deal with the Joker, are as follows: the Joker will kill someone dear to either Batman, Gordon, or Dent, in an effort to compell Batman to kill him. Batman will beat him to a bloody pulp, but will stop short of taking his life. Then the Joker will be thrown into Arkham, where the very best and brightest expert in abnormal psychology and criminal insanity, Dr. Harleen Quinby, will be assigned to rehabilitate him back to sanity.
My only fear is that, just like Burton's Joker, Burton's Catwoman, Schumacker's Riddler, and Shumacher's Two-Face, Nolan's Joker will succeed in his very first movie in learning Batman's true identity. That is such an old and used and -- to be honest -- shallow plot device, in my opinion. I truly hope that they decide against using it.

    Mask of the Phantasm

    by jdl82

I agree. It was the truest depiction of Batman on film yet. And, yes, of course Batman did a lot of crying. Big biceps are often filled not with muscles, but hardened tears. Batman is who he is because of the deep anguish concealed within him, not because of his finances. It's his pain that drives him to do what he does. He is a creature of darkness, angst and a rage so dense that there were only two ways to manifest it: destroy the world, or change it. He chose the latter. Had he chose the former, he would have become a menace to the world unlike any before him. In the end, what makes him so appealing as a character is that he is such an anti-hero: he is a terrorist who fights criminals, and a good-guy who dresses and acts like a villain.

If he had chosen to filter his rage in a destructive way, he would have become the very person the Joker would have nightmares about. Gotham would not have been merely his ward, but his playground. Nobody would have been safe from an evil Batman. He would be capable of raping, killing, stealing, and never getting caught. And lest you think that he surely would have met his end at the hands of the Justice League, remember that they keep him around because they know that he might be the only person in existence who could take each and every one of them down. He is a threat to society. He is darkness embodied. He is rage manifested. But he is good. And that alone is separates him from villainy.

    Identity

    by sovikos

Yeah learning of one's Identity is in most cases a killer in movies. I've rarely seen it done properly. The build up for Harry finding out who Spider-man was huge, but when the moment came it lacked almost everything.
Actually Lois & Clark seemed to do it perfect. The build up was great, and I think it went over 2 seasons before it was revealed to her.

    by w3bzpinn3r

How does he dress and act like a criminal? He dresses like a bat, sure, but criminal? um... no. Batman also does not act like a criminal. He doesn't kill. He uses only enough violence to get the job done. He uses brains and DETECTIVE skills as sharp as Sherlock Holmes (something no other hero in existence in Marvel or DC come close to). Batman actually has to study and FIND his foes, they don't just convienently show up on his doorstep like Spider-Man's.

The reason The Justice League keeps him around isn't coz he singlehandedly hands them their asses on a regular basis, but because he is so damn smart and resourceful that it'd be insane NOT to have him nearby. Sure he may not be Mr Personality, but if you put together the sum of the entire JLA members' IQs, it would still be less than Batman's.

    glasses? c'mon.

Batman, Spider-Man, Ironman, etc all change their voice when parading around in their costumes. Batman talks in a raspy whisper. Spider-man is semi-muffled. Ironman has synthesizers that alter his voice pattern.

Masks work very well in real life to make positive IDs difficult...

As for Joker being a super deformed freak show.... where/how does he live and eat, looking like that, and not attract attention? Can't exactly walk into Starbucks with a scar like that and not draw some attention to oneself...

    Re:W3...

    by jdl82

You're looking at Batman from a young pair of eyes, I suspect. When the modern Batman was introduced late last century, he was an astoundingly dark character compared to other superheroes. He broke people's bones just to get them to talk; he snuck into people's homes and spied on them without their knowledge; he forewent bright colors and dressed in dark ones; his war on crime was not one of justice, like others', but vengeance. He trusted nobody. He had no romantic interests. He rarely smiled. The very people he tried to protect were terrified of him, and that was by his own design.Nowadays, antiheroes are commonplace in the comics. But that's thanks to the likes of the original righteous bad-cops, such as Wolverine and Batman. They'll break you long, long before they read you your rights. So again, he's a villain who fights crime, a terrorist who fights criminals. As for the Justice League, what I said really is true. None of them trust him completely, and it's mutual. He even carries an arsenal of kryptonite with him, just in case.

Batman actually decided to reveal to Gordon who he actually was a few years ago at the end of the No Man's Land arc. Gordon turned his back, though, saying it wasn't necessary, and that he might already know his identity, thanks to his being a professional investigator and such. So perhaps he does know. It has been firmly established, though, that he knew Batgirl's identity the entire time his daughter wore tha cowl, prior to the Joker shooting her in the back and photographing himself raping her.

Oh yeah. That prologue has absolutely floored me. Nolan has payed close attention to what makes the joker compelling... His madness has a METHOD. I love how the clip showcases how he brilliantly flauts the 'rules' of the game. He's funny, strange, brutal, and smart.... and that's only the first three minutes of the fucking movie! Anybody can write 'funny one-liners' for the Joker. But it takes talent and brains to show how deadly intelligent he is... Color me motherfuckin impressed.

    by w3bzpinn3r

Actually, I've been reading batman comics for well over 25 years, and have read many of the comics before that.... And I wouldn't in a million years call Batman a villain. Cops spy on people all the time... it's called a stakeout. Also, the bat doesn't kill, rarely uses guns, and is far more cerebral than most other heroes. I would honestly say Batman is James Bond in tights without the Bond Girls. Even in the 80's with some of the darkest Batman comics to date, Batman still operated within his moral code.

Oh, and don't bring Wolverine into this. Wolverine is one of the most oversaturated unrefined characters in literary history.

    by mattmanreturns

Batman is constantly dealing with a corrupt police department and has allied himself with the one policeman who isn't corrupt. He strictly abides by his "no killing" rule. And I'm obviously not talking about the Burton Batman, who likes to blow people up or set them on fire... a clear departure from the comic book Batman. Batman refuses even to kill his arch nemesis. If you think Batman is even remotely a villain, you don't know the character.

and the music never let up for at least the first 30 minutes...SHUT the fucking Hollywood overblown SCORE up for fucks sake. It's irritating and distracting and KILLS drama (and often action) COMPLETELY. It's also another reason why the film completely failed to evoke a true re-invention of Batman. It's SO SO fucking cliched and is the kind of music that is killing films...its so wall to wall in movies like Pirates that its almost unwatchable because the sound is so fucking unlistenable with wailing choirs and every corny as hell cliche/melodic theme being dragged out for the infinite time.

    The whole "realism" thing...

    by prof. pop-cult

I appreciate the way Nolan tries to make his version of Batman "realistic". But there are a few points where I think he misses the mark. For one, the Batman outfit still looks quite similar to the previous versions in the other movies. Maybe this was a concession he had to make with the studio execs, who probably wanted to keep it similar looking. I would have liked a more "realistic" Batman outfit modeled after a combination of SWAT, black ops, Ninja style armor. As for the Joker, I can accept that he wears white make-up and that it's not his natural complexion -- but then, why doesn't he just wear the white make-up evenly and not splattered about over his face? He's an evil clown, so why doesn't he do a cleaner, neater job with his make-up?

Then Bruce Wayne would have been caught and arrested within hours of the Batmobile chase. Only a complete retard of a cop or Waynetech exec wouldn't have been able to put two and two together. That's part of the problem with Begins, Nolan works under the guise of realism, and then throws it out whenever he needs an exciting scene.

...he used to be known as "moviemack". Prior to Batman Begins' release, he spent a truly hilarious amount of time and energy telling everyone how much it was going to suck. After it opened to almost universal talkbacker praise, he more or less vanished for a very long time, undoubtedly hanging his head in shame and humiliation.

I'm not sure what it was that got him banned in the end, but he apparently thinks enough time has gone by that people have forgotten him and his zany antics and decided to resurface big time.

I am Batman/moviemack is one of the last true, red-blooded haters of AICN talkback. The guy is either utterly incapable of liking anything or unwilling to admit what he likes. I seen him being asked numerous times to explain exactly what it is he likes as opposed to what he hates and he fails to meet this challenge every. single. time. Oh sure, he'll throw a title like The Godfather out there but only as an example of a "classic", and how fucking safe is that?

    Regarding Green Lantern.

    by rbatty024

Apparently the Sinestro Corp story line is pretty good, although I haven't gotten around to reading it. The Green Lantern: Rebirth, when they finally brought back Hal, was a damn good story and a fine way of bringing Hal to his rightful place.

Anyways, with all of these superhero movies based firmly on Earth I'm really hoping they go for an epic space story. Harken back to the old Flash Gordon serials like Star Wars. DC has such a rich space mythology its a shame if it never makes it to the big screen.

Burton's Batman = Gay Goth Version of Original TV Series

    by laserpants

But not nearly as funny. I mean, yeah, as a camp object, as an object of ridicule, as a "so bad its good" grade Z unintentionally hilarious disaster, the Burton movies (and the multiple, even more awful sequels) are great. BUT, Nolan's take is actually an excellent film -- the kind of Batman movie I've been waiting to see since Miller dropped the genre-elevating Dark Knight. You could even make the argument that it way better then it needed to be; artfully done, smart, featuring excellent performances, AND really cool action. Not many movies achieve that. Superman Returns, like Burton's crap, on the other hand, was an utter disaster. It was overlong, it was clearly a reflection of the directors own raging gay emo messiah complex, and worst of all, it was BORING. I'd like to see someone step in and make a really great Superman movie, but I think thats unlikely given how badly Singer effed it up and basically ruined the character.

Batman has lasted for seventy years.

    by rbatty024

They can find something new to do with the character every so often so they might as well keep on putting films out there. The Adam West movie was a parody of superheroes meant to make fun of Batman, which is completely different from Burton's gothic comic book, which is different from Schumacker's campy return to the sixties, which in turn is different from Nolan's serious take on the character. All completely different takes on the same character. Not all of them are equal, and Schumaker's was easily the least original, but it just goes to show that you can do some truly different things with this character and still have it recognizably be Batman. This is one of the great aspects of Batman.

    by mrbong

was excellent for its time, but the years have not been kind to it, and Batman Begins kind of buried any claims that it had of being a decent or even the best Batman. still, it showed that there was cash in the comic book films, so without it being the colossal marketing machine that it was, there would have been no BB, no X Men, no Spider-Man. i find it impossible to watch Burton's effort these days, it just feels lame. sorry to all of those who still hold it dear, if it helps, yeah, i will admit, i was blown away by it at the time.

"Which explains why the next generation is so screwed up. No originality in the music and hollywood caters to their lost souls by force feeding them overhyped, unoriginal movies."

Um, no. You're only proving that your education system is an EPIC FAIL. No one is "force feeding" anyone anything. (Although that does sound like a wickedly cool dark Jedi trick...) Consumer demand is fueled by, yep, consumer demand. That can entail either stuff that [a] people want, or stuff that [b] people are willing to put up with. The American consumer is on average wanting or willing to put up with spending money on generic, mediocre crap. This is not, repeat NOT, the fault of the entertainment industry -- or of any other industry, for that matter. If they have "lost souls", as you tritely put it, then it's not up to the biz to wag a finger in their faces and tell them what they **should** consume. That's elitism, no matter how low or how high your standards are. (It's also colossally bad business strategy.) It's easy to want to blame everything on big bad corporations, but that's the easy -- not to mention stupid -- way out. The American economy as it is right now is precisely 100.00% the fault of the American public. There is no overt or covert conspiracy to force upon people stuff they find intolerable. (Even if there were a conspiracy, it's up to the public to generate enough outrage to uncover the truth. There currently is no popular outrage for corporatism, which proves my point about 100% culpability.) Corporations have either the consent or the acquiescence of consumers (or both), and either one of those two is enough to make money off of them. Today's yutes are "messed up" because they're being raised by yesterday's yutes, who have similarly appalling standards which they're only passing on.

    Sorry everyone

    by jdl82

I was drunk last night, and consequently failed in getting my thoughts across effectively. What I had been trying to say was that Batman is a unique character in comic book lore because he is fueled not by desires to right wrongs, but to prevent them and avenge their victims. Also, in comparison to other super heroes prior to the mid-1980's, Batman's costume in more similar to those of that period's villains than its heroes. Lastly, Batman is unique because he is willing to bend laws as a means to an end. For example, he does not acquire warrants before breaking into and entering another's abodes or implanting audio and video devices therein. Lastly, while he does employ a vast array of gadgets and martial arts when necessary, his foundational weapons-of-choice are fear and intimidation. In summary, while Batman is not a villain, he does, relatively speaking, exhibit unorthodox tactics that certain other heroes would consider beneath themselves.

OK Anthony Michael Hall, there was speculation he was going to appear in the film as "the Riddler" or the guy who becomes the Riddler "E. Nigma" or whatever his name is. And now he is playing a character named "Mike Engel" supposedly. Anyone know who exactly he is playing, and WHY THE HELL isn't he playing "The Riddler??!??" He seems he would fit the role perfectly.

My guess is, Chris Nolan didn't realize that you wanted Hall to play the Riddler so badly, hence he cast him in another role. If he had known how much it meant to you, I'm sure circumstances would be different.

    But The Riddler Is CORNY

    by laserpants

I dunno if he could fit in this new "realistic" Batman. You know what fellas, brace yourself for TDK being the ultimate Batman movie and part 3 being sorta on the 'meh' side. Seems to be the way for most of these trilogies, that the third is usually a disappointment. Maybe not a total disaster, but a disappointment after the emotional peak of the part 2. I dunno though, we still haven't seen this one yet so, who knows...

Yeah I could see 3 becoming shit like most of the others have.
Two-Face as the main villian, is too comical. Can anyone imagine someone like that? I guess it can be done, but it's the one thing that can go wrong with it. And what about Robin? Think he'll show up? Riddler/Robin/2Face/Penguin can all ruin this more realistic version of Batman. But I'd still love to see what Nolan can come up with if they get their chance.

. . . .It was a good trailer and I’m looking forward to seeing it, but some of you think it’s the second coming of Christ. The way people were hooping and hollering about the bootleg or when they saw it at a ‘Legend’ screening, I was expecting something grand! Sorry, it just a standard trailer, and it was anti-climatic. I have a feeling that this movie is going to be so over hyped that the level of expectation is going to be a major let down.

    Why re-imagine SO much?

    by emperor_was_a_jerk

The origin of Batman in Batman Begins was pretty much fell in line with the comic books (except all that long, drawn out, training stuff with Ducard spewing cliche lines for an hour) so why be SO unfaithful to the comic version of Joker here? Wasn't Joker a guy who fell into a vat of playing card ink (thus the name JOKER) and his skin was dyed white ,went crazy from it and became JOKER? Cutting smiles in faces, putting on white make-up to "scare" people... it's all just too much. Besides if he wants to scare people, just hold a gun to their head. I just don't buy it all. Sorry.

I am blown away by this.. Heath is going to steal this movie, no doubt. This movie is a bold move forward for the whole genre. 2008 is the summer of the bat. While "Begins" creaps up on you steadily for 2 hours, this one is going to smack you in the face and not stop.. This is what happens when studio suits get the fuck out of the way and let passionate creators do their thing...

    You guys make me laugh.

    by w3bzpinn3r

As if I could be intimidated, or even concerned, about you nerds is laughable.

Also, why attack me? I'm not the one calling batman a villain, or any of the other far more retarded comments in this forum. You guys attack me because I am right. Yup. You are all a bunch of insecure, overweight dumbasses that can't get laid, that have nothing to look forward to in life beyond Halo tournaments and WOW.

I feel sorry for you guys. I'm living a great life with a family, a good job, and have a future. You guys, well, you got nothing but cheetos stains on a white undershirt, chatting with Kevin Smith about how not to make movies.

    Peace out!

    PS...

    by w3bzpinn3r

It's sad when Harry can get married and get laid, and all you poor porkers can't even get a woman (besides your own inbred mother) to even look at you. Sad.

Watch, next even Quint will get married ... you guys will still be "lovin' the hand lotion"

    Also...

    by w3bzpinn3r

I never said I was a tough guy... I merely commented that I'm not a fat fucker like most of you and "Comic Book Guy" from Simpsons.

I actually can control my eating habits, and not pig out because of insecurities.
