MCI getting ready to pull out on THE WILD WILD WEST
Ok folks here's an ALLEGED report that IF TRUE could spill some truth into the negative reports we've been hearing on THE WILD WILD WEST from the test screenings. If this is true, then it doesn't bode.... well. I HOPE the reshoots can fix the problems... but ya know... I don't think this is a project that's gonna be saved. But keep your fingers crossed.... Perhaps a miracle can happen... The following is a RUMOR, I'm attempting to confirm it, so until then... put this in your little can of possibilities..... Ta ta...
Guys,
I work for a division of Time Warner and in a meeting the other day, I heard
that MCI, one of the major corporate sponsors of Wild Wild West is trying to
pull the plug on it's involvement with the film.
As you can probably imagine, lawyers are being called out. I get the feeling
that WB is going to make sure they take everyone with them if the movie
tanks as badly as people expect it to.
Thanks.

Ha-ha!

Mmm-bop!
-
a television show that should have stayed there. Oh well. can't help that. It's gonna tank in a major way.
-
They shouldn't be able to pull out. They don't know for sure its going to tank, and that is a risk they have to take. They shouldn't be able to just pull out just cause there's a chance they'll lose some money. Besides, how much money could they lose?

D'OH!

...I hope this sucks!! The revolution wont start until these ultra-big-budget movies start bombing. Back in the sixties, Hollywood couldnt make anything except ugly musicals, which kept bombing, which paved the way for movies like THE GRADUATE and EASY RIDER. We'll have another revolution (hence, another period like the seventies of good films) but not until moives like WWW bite the big one like they deserve. TITANIC could have been the movie to sink (get it? I made a boat pun! Arent i original? i should be a journalist!) the studios, but it had Leo. Maybe WWW will be the studio killer ive been waiting for.

Looks like the 3rd time (July 4th weekend) is a bust for Big W.
-
Rest assured, MCI is still one of the sponsors. There's a pivotal scene towards the end of the second act where Will Smith shoots Kenneth Braunagh right in the face. Then he turns to the camera and goes...."Well shiiiit, MCI sure saves me money on long distance." No, it doesn't make much sense, but damn, if it won't make me switch over from Sprint.

Listen: I am one of the only few people who actually liked The Avengers - I wasn't actually expecting it to be the best and it wasn't. But it sure was better than some of the other shit they put out last year (Snake Eyes, Deep Impact, Patch Adams, Faculty, Mighty Joe Young, ISKWYDLS, Soldier, Apt Pupil and the list goes on). Anyway, I think the main reason people stayed away from THAT flick was cause all of its bad publicity. WWW looks better than alot of movies that have come out so far (eg. Pushing Tin, Lost & Found, At First Sight, In Dreams, etc) but with the help of all this negative publicity, it looks like it will bomb big time. Oh and I actually liked the official trailer - that Will Smith song rocked, IMHO !!!!
-
Why the hell shouldn't MCI be able to pull out? YOu ever hear of a free market? If you tell someone you're going to buy a car, and it turns out to be a lemon, don't you want the opportunity to return the piece of shit before it sucks you dry? I say drain the sponsorship of this shitstain before they get the idea that it should be released into theaters. -Loki
-
I want to see the look on Will Smith's face when he learns how shitty WWW performed on his "Big Willie Weekend" of July 4th. Austin Powers and Big Daddy instead will be the big winners climbing over, conquering and saving the weekned. Smith no doubt knows what a stinker WWW is so he should stop all the trumpeting and just lay low.
-
Are you kidding me? WWW looks like complete crap. How many of Will Smith's fifteen minutes are left? C'mon, a huge mechanical spider? I'm sick of studios using special effects to sell bad movies. If I was MCI, I'd be jumping off this sinking ship.
-
Look the rest of those shows were not necessarily great - but anything was better than Avengers. It truly was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. With the possible exception of WWW.
-
You can't always get what you want, but you get what you need. For anyone who thought making this movie was a good idea, you are about to get what you need -- a bitch slappin'

"Shut your pie-holes" Sure, I'm sick of the lack of originality in Hollywood but even if WWW tanks that doesn't give anyone the right to pull out on anything if they've willinglt invested in it. That's the gamble you take and if it weren't for those stupid test screenings they would never have even known about it's potential failure. Further, am I the only one who thinks WWW 'Won't Suck'? Granted, I've never seen the original show to compare it to but isn't that better. Everyone was wooed by "The Fugitive" and "Titanic" and those were the most un-original ideas ever. The whole look and feel to WWW already has me waiting and can I say what I'm about to say w/o being pointed at and called gay? I think that if Clooney had agreed to take the role it would be better. I can totally see him and Smith strolling around as a couple of bad ass gun-slingers. Anyhoo, all I'm saying is that as much as I hate remakes, we're going to have to accept them and if we just expect some half-assed movie we might be pleasantly surprised. *(Note: This does not apply to that unbelievably horrific thing they dared call Godzilla)
-
In regards to earlier mention about the web poisoning peoples mind about The Avengers.. the trailer did that. I remember seeing a wooden Steed and a frigid Emma Peel, thinking the soundtrack was going to rock, and honestly, the only reason I wanted to catch the film was to see Eddie Izzard( extremely funny guy. Buy his album. Now. He needs more frocks)
But I didn't, because the trailer didn't sell me, and the fact that it was opened with a whimper and without reviews confirmed it for me.
The advance hype for Wild Waste hasn't won me.. I think it showed a little too much in the way of the fx, and I'm not a big Fresh Prince fan. So I won't go see it.
But for all the people mentioning the movie as this summer's Godzilla..remember Godzilla made money, and last I heard, they were planning a sequel, above and beyond the lame ass cartoon which really copies the old NBC cartoon..just that you have a 'cute' robot instead of a 'cute' Gadzookie. And the only thing stopping a second MIB is that Smith and Jones want to damn much money to do it.. so I don't think if this one flops, it will stop Hollywood land from putting out bas sci fi flicks. C'mon, they got away with the Matrix and Godzilla.. they're probably going to get away with this one -
It's up to us NOT to see this damn movie. Resist the temptation - if for whatever reason you have some temptation. We can make it happen - we can make it bomb. Geeks unite. Unite and aim all of our vitriol at THIS MOVIE!!!!!! LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!!
-
WB can kiss my hairy arse, as far as I'm concerned. I'm GLAD they've been taking a beating in the box office because THEY DESERVE IT!
As many before me have pronounced, The Matrix was a FLUKE and is NOT ENOUGH to redeem Time/Warner for their ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVABLE atitude towards film-making, and to the entertainment industry, in general.
Don't think we've forgotten what a bunch of C###S you have proven yourselves to be in the past WB - your time has passed, and desperately throwing remakes at us in the hope that NOSTALGIA might be enough of a vehicle to keep you afloat will NOT help you....
DIE HOLLYWOOD SCUM!!! DIE! DIE! DIE! -and take your filthy westerns with you! -
I'm gonna say the unthinkable here... Yeah, WWW is going to fail, but it's not even going to fail in grand tradition. It's gonna go down as a lukewarm, not-a-bomb but not-a-blockbuster sort of release. Mark my words, even though the steaming Avengers fiasco is still fresh in our collective nostril, WB will hype the Sonnenfeld / Smith connection enough to get big opening numbers. Then the movie can slip comfortably into oblivion, but remember I said this: it's not a studio killer and it's certainly not going to stem the evil tide of tv-to-movie rehashes. Seen the Caddyshack Anniversary video yet with Jon Peters' smarmy little tidbit in the 'documentary' thereof? Come now, people and feast on the reality of WB's surroundings. Where most of the participants were marginally lucid (even Chevy!), Peters dangled precariously on the edge of incapacitated and just plain incoherent, the stereotypical Hollywood burn out. But he must be hooked up to the same powers that be that keep Keith Richards dithering and twitching year after year. Unless Chris Tucker can put out a movie that same opening weekend, all of us hopeful killjoys are going to have to suck it up and face another (yuck) Big Willie Weekend...
-
We all know how ugly it gets with rival studios wanting to bomb a movie before it even comes out. Does anyone know where this info came from? I'm not saying anything about WWW, but I think putting stuff like this before it has been confirmed is unfair. Don't get sucked into this crap Harry!
-
DIE YOU, BASTAGES! "BIG WEENIE WEEKEND!"
-
Now WWW might very well be the ol' stinkerino that everyone seems to be praying for. However, why not wait for the movie to come out before judging it? I saw a test screening of "Titanic" five months before it came out (saw it in Aug?, I believe, at the Cinemopolis in Anaheim Hills, Orange Co., CA.) And the movie was booooooring. Slow and tedious. Did not like it, no siree bob. When the movie came out in December, some friends dragged me to a showing. I really, really did not want to see it again. And you know what? It was really good, I was suprised. The movie had been trimmed by about 10-15 minutes. Scenes were not cut, just trimmed, adding a brisker pace, etc. Now you might be saying, "Yeah, but the movie still sucked." Oh yeah? You should of seen the version I first saw. The moral of this story friends is... just wait for the &^%$!! WWW to come out, then you spend all your precious summer hours destroying it. And if it really does bite the big one, I'll join you.
-
Now that I think about it, how do we know all these naysayers in "Talk Back" aren't from rival studios. We might all just be pawns of a few knuckleheads from a rival studio (Paramount, Fox, MGM, Universal, etc...), whose bosses instruct them to send really negative e-mails about the WWW. How do we know these people are just average movie geeks and not corporate punks, trying to ruin a competitor's movie? Never take a person, or an e-mail, at face value. That's all from the conspiracy theory end of things... the truth is out there.
-
I read JaneDoe33's thing about the scene where Smith turns to the camera and says the thing about MCI after he shoots Kenneth Brannagh......what in the sweet bloddy FUCK is that supposed to MEAN? Who wrote that trash? I hate Will SMith. I hate the Canadians. And I hate Warner Bros, regardless of THE MATRIX.
-
I'll admit, I want TPM to stomp all over this thing, but, seriously, that would just be greedy and selfish. So, its a kiddie movie, big deal, besides, I happened to like Men in Black and this seems like the same bunch, correct me if I'm wrong. What in the heck is wrong?! sheesh, we don't have to ALL be cynical bastards, y'know. . .PS- I remember a LONG time ago, Harry posted something like "With Eyes Wide Shut, Green Mile and Wild Wild West, THIS could be the turnaround year for Warners!" What happened to that optimism before, big guy?
-
"...'how do I know you're NOT sick, you could be some deranged LuNaTiC'...shut-up toots! My name is the Prince, besides WOULD a lunatic drive a Porsche like this?"
-
To certain parties:
SHEEEESH!!!
I've been a lurker here for a VERY long time, and so far, I've kept my trap shut. No more.
Do you people know any other way to express your dislike/disapproval of something without using obscenities? Every Talkback section has at least one post (usually more) that has more variations on the "f-word" than anything else. If you want to criticize somebody's work or opinion, you could at least show some intelligence and think of something helpful. Otherwise, all you are doing is showing your ignorance, crudity, and lack of imagination.
I await with interest what will probably be an echoing silence...
-
Well,
George Lucas said it right out of his own mouth. " The studio execs don't know what movies are, they have focus groups so other people can tell them what movies are." That pretty much sums it up. The old formula is not working, give us substance or give us death.
James Prater -
OK, I was just kidding.... I agree w/ you to an extent. However, I do think the "f" word is sometimes an effective way to convey your vehemence, anger, surprise, or whatever. But when you use it more than once or twice, its effectiveness really goes downhill in a hurry. As to the conspiracy theories, I think it's a real possibility that there are posters out there who are from the studios or that give Harry "negative" reviews of the competitor's films. As for myself, I'm just sick of Will Smith, and I'm pissed that the trailer for a western has rap in it. You're right in that it could very well be a good movie, but that's just not the vibe I'm getting. In fact, I thought the trailer looked really, really, lame. I'm just going to wait for the (hopefully honest) spy reports and we'll see how the movie is progressing.
-
I really hope this movie bombs. Will Smith is so in love with himself. Plus, I am so sick of Hollywood making movies out of old TV shows. I am saving my $8 for something more deserving. Big Willie Weekend? Shove it up your arse.
-
Pretty much sums it up.
-
the preview looked good, but i noticed they did keep that giant spider thing out of most of it.
-
As far as I've known, Will Smith has decided to focus his rap lyrics on "party" and "dance" styled songs as opposed to the all-too-common fatalistic style. As far as I know, he's known as a passionate workaholic when he's on the set. As far as I know, he's a committed husband and father in his personal life. Maybe he has been somewhat overexposed during these past few years. However, I don't see where this makes him full of himself or any less deserving than other performers in Hollywood. Nobody is required to like Will Smith, but it does seem as if there are other performers more deserving of the contemptuous vibe that it seems some people are eminating towards him...
-
Will SMith is the cockiest, most annoying idiot working in movies today. Every time I see him doing that stupid, smug smile, I want to smack his ears straight. Everytime the guy wins an award, the first person he thanks is himself. And his whole BS line about being a father, etc is just that...BS. The guy is a blowhard and a disgrace. He has talent, but he chooses to use it in a never-ending quest to annoy the F-CK out of me. In the words of Yoda: "Ego leads to disgrace. Disgrace leads to hate. Hate leads to.....SUFFFFEEERRRRRINNGGG!!!!!!!
-
"Sounds Polly wolly crappy!"
-
Even if it's only big for a week and a half then it'll still probably bring in 100 million, factor in foreign, video, m'dise, CD and there's no way it will bomb. Sheesh. (Note that not for a moment did I say it would be good.)
-
Nancy: "SID! You just put your cigarette out on my leg!!"
Sid: "Oh, all right..."
Well, I'm not going to say that I'm not going to see WWW (I probably will since I can get into movies free, and I'll see ANYTHING for free), but all of this slobbering overpraising of THE MATRIX is, well, quite frankly, BAFFLING.
I went and saw the movie, being a big fan of BOUND and sci-fi, and I can honestly say that the movie LOOKED amazing. That's it... there was nothing else extraordinary about it. Lousy script, only so-so concept, the acting of Keanu is enough to make me want to retch (luckily, though, I don't eat or drink at the movies... it distracts me). In any case, I'm willing to say RIGHT NOW that the WWW script is probably on par with Matrix... I bet if you guys just picked up a copy of the script and read it, you'll wonder why the Brothers even bothered to make the film... -
There is no way in hell that this movie won't make a shitload of money on opening weekend for two reasons, whether it sucks or not (Personally, I think it will be entertaining). It is 4th of july weekend, and it is another Will Smith blockbuster. Most of you film geeks hated ID4 and MIB, but did that stop the rest of the movie-going public from going to see Will put his thing down? NO. So even if it is not the best of Big Willie's Blockbuster blasts, it will still make a killing. I will guarantee this film will be the second highest grossing film of the summer, right after The Phantom Menace at No. 1, and Austin Powers will come in at third. EWS won't even make the top 10, especially with a NC-17 rating.
-
Maybe you are just jealous of his success. Maybe you are racist and hate to see a black man do something positive with his life, and that has positive effects on young people of all color. Maybe you can't stand to see a black man show something other than how to be a damn gangster. Who the hell knows? All I know is that Will is one of the most charismatic, postive, all around cool guys in the business right now, and I will support him in anything that he does. As far as some of you saying he is full of himself, get a damn life. It is called comedy, and Will has always had that quirky comic attitude. It is part of the reason why he is as popular as he is now. Maybe some of you should try to rid yourselves of your hated attitudes and learn something from Will, and that's how to be positive and have fun. Just because you are frustrated at the progress of your own life, do not take it out on people who are successful. Jealousy and immaturity will lead you to being old, alone, and unhappy. Will, keep it real!
-
MCI is gonna pull out like a Catholic on Prom night, huh? Oh well. Que sara, sara. Maybe they will learn to stick to their stupid ads with Al Bundy or whoever they use. I can't tell the long distance carriers apart anymore so screw em. By the way, anyone who thinks Pushing Tin sucks can kiss my ass. It had one or two little problems but it was a fuck lot better than any Adam Sandler bullshit. I saw the poster for Big Daddy (Adam and a kid pissing on a court room door??!!!) and I wanted to urnate on it. Thanks to all you dumb fucks that made Waterboy a hit by the way. Thanks to you morons I have to deal with this Adam Sandler shit for God knows how long. Yes, I know I don't have to go, but I still have to hear all my friends and co-workers doing lame impressions of it and telling me how it is "SSSOOOO FUNNNNYYY!!"
Thanks a lot. By the way, why not just shove white hot sewing needles through my eyes? -
Last night I watched Falling Down (great film) on HBO and thought "what happened to WB?". When did they give up on movies. As far as I'm concerned the Matrix was a fluke in an otherwise festering heap of shit. (Although... humans as batteries? Come on! We only generate about as much as a nine volt dry cell and we consume most of that ourselves. Why not breed a "human" with the mentality of a cockroach and forgo the matrix all together? But I digress...) We've been battered by crap like Congo, Species, Broken Arrow etc. for too long. WWW might be an exception to this but from what I've seen so far the chances are slim. I'll be delighted if it surprises me. We need another over hyped, big budget, eye candy, poorly written, no plot "summer blockbuster" like we need another top heavy, over priced, "luxury" truck that handles like a waterbed.
-
doesn't mean they are racist, moron. I happen to enjoy watching actors like Morgan Freeman, Samuel L Jackson, Denzel Washington on film. I could go on too. However, they are "actors". Will Smith is just an over-hyped, slicked-up star. I don't consider him an "actor". This is apparent in his need to star in special-effects laden, over-hyped movies.
-
All I have to say is go watch the fresh Prince episode where he gets shot, and Carlton gets a gun to retliate, and then come tell me if you think he can act or not. Also, I think he has done wonderful job of acting in all the films he has been in. just because you haven't seen him in a lot of movies that calls for drama, does not mean he cannot act. Hopefully they will get this Muhammad Ali picture made, and you will truly see his talent.
-
Lets not forget that some recent oscar winning actors started off in quirky comedies or action comedies. Does anybody remeber Tom Hanks and Robin williams. One day you will be seeing Will Smith's name under the nominees for an Acadamy Award.
-
Just a couple of comments on Will Smith, aka "Fresh Prince," aka "Big Willie":
For those who said that Will Smith is "the cockiest, most annoying idiot working in movies today" (I'm looking at you here, MythMakerII): Will turned down a scholarship to attend MIT as an engineering student to pursue acting.
For those who think that Will Smith "is just an over-hyped, slicked-up star. I don't consider him an 'actor'." (I have turned my head and am now looking in the direction of Efihp): Rent Six Degrees of Separation--it's not academy award winning stuff, but it's definitely not a performance from a slicked-up hollywood image monger.
And for those who think Will Smith is cocky : He might be, I've never met him, but probably neither have you.
Sorry for the long message. Mmmmmmm, words. -

WWW is from the evil and pathetic Time Warner Conglomerate of CO
by 20th century fox
Guys WB has been turing out CRAP for years. in the last 6 years they lucked out by having good trailers in front of movies that were hits think of it this way ANALIZE SHIT was WB first hit in a while yet look what kick ass trailer was on it the MATRIX thus people went oooh ahhhh and they went to see matrix (a good film imind you) Now in front of MATRIX we see WWW and poeple are saying IT SUCKS this movie will tank TW stock holders should fire Ted,Barry and bob and stop these losers from runing what was once a great stuido...
Yes Ted Turner you suck... -
My dislike of WWW (based in part on the trailer) has nothing to do with Will Smith. I like Will Smith, as a person, as a role model and as a performer. I wish him lots of success, and if he does win an Oscar, good for him. But I'm sick and tired of a creativity bankrupt Hollywood recycling old TV shows looking for hit movies. I watched the original WWW as a kid -- not the re-runs, the original episodes. It was one of my favorite shows. I have good memories of it, memories I don't want ruined by a crappy, FX-filled big screen adaptation. The only reason I will go see it is because I'm required to go as part of my job.
-
Laugh now while you can, because soon you will eating your words when you see Will on stage excepting his oscar. Will is a great actor and soon will be proving it to everyone. Like JJTBone said, watch six degrees of seperation and you will see some great acting. Just look at Jim Carry. 2-3 years ago if someone said that he would someday be oscar material, everyone would have laughed and said impossible. Then along comes The Truman Show, and suddenly it is not so unbelievable anymore, especially with The Man on the Moon coming out. So don't be so quick to make judgements on Will Smith, because he will get there.

Anything that humiliates Jon Peters is good enough for me!
by kingkrypton
I would SOOOOOOOOOOO love to see MCI pull out of VILE VILE WEST, if for no other reason than to see that retard Jon Peters get knocked off his high horse and exposed for the stupid jackass he really is. Nothing against Will Smith and Kevin Kline, I like them both. But after what Peters did to Superman and Sandman (and now he has Wonder Woman, too), I want to see him suffer. And if it means Will taking a minor setback (trust me, he'll rebound from this stinker), so be it. I just wanna see Peters look like a fool.
-
To those who are pointing to "Six Degrees" as an example of how Mr. Smith can be an Ack-Tore, I say this: LICK MY MULTI-VEINED ROD. ...You evidently are unaware that Smith signed up for the role knowing he'd be playing a homosexual, and that the part called for a guy-guy kiss -- it's in the script, it's in the show, that's the way it's done. He said, sure. Then he got halfway into shooting, and when it was too late to replace him, he "changed his mind," compromising the integrity of the production because he was worried about his image. That's not responsible-actor behavior -- that's a self-obsessed star throwing his weight around even when he's (in his own mind) "slumming." He even bragged about it later, boasting about how he was able to get it changed because he didn't want to do it. Me, I would have fired his ass and sued him for breach of contract to recover the cost of production up to that point -- but if the Jon Peters legacy proves anything, it's that assholes don't, unfortunately, finish last.
-
Great piece of "reporting" about Will Smith's "Six Degrees..." situation, but what you failed to include with that little tidbit was how much Smith was disappointed with himself for not playing the homosexual scene completely. He has mentioned this in two specific magazines:"Vibe"(something you probably don't read) and "Premiere",in both articles Smith remarked that if he had a choice to do it over again he wish he would've been more mature to deal with those themes at the time(pretty amazing confession for a conceited person, huh?).And what is this crap about Smith being a self-obsessed star?At the time "Six Degrees" came out the multi-million dollar movies that have become his trademark weren't even on the boards. He was a tv star, which doesn't mean much in the film section of Hollywood,my friend, needless to say he wasn't calling any shots. His movie star career started with "Bad Boys" and continued with ID4 and the former didn't come out till a few years later after "Six Degrees...".Lastly in an age when actors routinely use body doubles for stunt work and love scenes since when is it an insult to the acting profession?
-
..but I think The Daily Show made that joke before American Dad did.
