Journey Over For JOURNEYMAN??

Published at:  Dec 12, 2007 10:38:33 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

NBC on Tuesday let its option on extending the first season of “Journeyman” lapse, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Now the time-travel series’ cast is free to seek work elsewhere, effectively ending the series.

The final two episodes written before the writers’ strike will air Monday and Wednesday of next week.

Read all of The Hollywood Reporter’s Wednesday morning story on the matter here.

Fans of the show are not yet giving up on it. From “yodaismyhomie”:

I didn't know who to send this too but decided to choose you since you did the report about watching Journeyman monday night. http://savejourneyman.net/ has decided to send Rice-a-Roni to NBC in hopes of saving the show. THey are hoping people will send a creative letter "from the future" to the show execs. Anyway, I was hoping you could post an article linking to their site or with the info available from it (you need to scroll down when you get there) so fans can act to save Journeyman.

    NBC is in trouble already

    by pound sand

The network is giving back money (not make goods) to advertisers for last season prime time ratings shortfalls. That's LAST SEASON, when they at least had a hit show or two. But this year, Journeyman, Bionic, Life, and Chuck were considered the "big four," and we're starting to see how well that plan turned out. Couple this with the writer's strike (I SUPPORT THE WRITERS ON THIS ONE, btw) and the peacock looks wobbly right now, which should make the haters rejoice a little.

After the disaster with Heroes this season, I think you'd be willing to nurture a show, but apparently not. like Jericho. Only before the network lets the regulars go. Poor Kevin McKidd, the guy can't win. He's been on two great shows and both of them got bad ratings and were canceled prematurely. at least Rome had a somewhat natural end. Journeyman might not get that.

    Don't send Rice a Roni

    by mel gibsteinberg

I think that is a dumb idea, it pales with the "nuts" campaign of Jericho, and just seems like a crappy copycat move. Letter campaigns sometimes work, but I think some sort really clever, grassroots guerilla tactics are in order here, if you want to save this show. I am not sure that in our day and age there is time to save a show like Journeyman. It almost feels like the execs basically roll up their sleeves, advertise the crap out of a lineup, and then after the season premiere if it doesn't score a 20, they sort lean back and say "well that didn't work, hmmm, let's try something else." The irony is, do they believe that anything else they put in that time slot is going to do that much better? Deleted scenes from Deal or No Deal are going to outperform Journeyman? Really? The what the hell!!!

I realize this is an afterthought, and it's just me being bitter that my favorite new show was canceled, but maybe you should have been throwing up talkbacks for this show everyweek... I think we went six weeks without one. Every little bit helps. I just find it frustrating that the crapfest Heroes gets another season (and a TB every week in which no one discusses how great the show is, but actually bitches about how terrible it is!!), but a truly great show is gone before it's time. How about the next time a show is on most of us love you give us a TB for it every week, instead of just at the beginning and end of it's run. Too little too late.

    Fuck NBC.

It will just stack up in the studio mailrooms next to all the stupid pencils. AlwaysThere is right. Use your time and money to send mosquito nets to poor kids in Africa or something. Studios won't save a new show with low ratings when they don't even know when they'll get thir writers back to work. Enjoy this Spring of American Gladiators, Deal or No Deal, and Law and Order repeats 24/7.

You have a valid point. I've been as vocal a proponent of renewing this show as anybody, and all for ssending a makeshift ketchup sandwich, some aspirin in an envelope or taking 10 minutes to jot down a letter from the future in garden-variety geekdom support, but the Rice-A-Roni thing does seem like a damned waste of non-perishable food that could be put to a hell of a lot better use. Gotta pass on that idea.

That would mean I said the premise sucked. I thought the sci-fi elements were awesome. Burying the ring, learning to carry different currency for each time period, etc was all great stuff! But the dialogue and how the people acted just ruined it all for me. I was intrigued by the ongoing story, but the episodic stories that were introduced and wrapped up within the hour were lame. I was just stating my opinion people, not trying to pour salt in your wounds. It's fucking T.V. Although I am kind of a hypocrite. If this happened to Lost, I'd be livid right now.

I hate the fact that NBC has the balls to go out on a limb for unique programming (occasionally), but never has the balls to nurture its own programming. I think the Nielson ratings system is no longer representative of the whole, and should be scrapped for a more complete system. Even the "Nielson +7" ratings are flawed!

Bionic Woman has no "audience" and is mess to boot. The talk-backs here said a lot. I have never seen more agreement on a topic in the years I have been reading stuff here.
Journeyman joins "Lucky" and "Wonderfalls" as great shows that never got a chance to get "an audience".

    by mazzer

...but networks only care about the ratings. Wake up to reality, folks. You can send DOZENS of letters to NBC, but what was really needed was for MILLIONS of people to actually watch the show. And that clearly didn't happen.

Still, I have to sympathize with the show's lousy timeslot. The show is better than most of the trash they broadcast mid-evening, yet they pushed Journeyman into a 10pm slot. A was struggling to stay awake. It may have done a lot better at 8pm.

    It was an okay show...

    by kid z

... but nothing mindblowing. Wouldn't use the dreaded "meh" to describe it, more like "eh, s'okay". This season has really been the Season from Hell as far as TV goes. I think, at this point, broadcast TV is within about a micron's width of being a dead medium. I know the strike has driven me to a Netflix account, reading and Tivoing the occassional interesting documentary on the History Channel. Oh, I'll still Tivo Lost this February, even if it will be only 8 measly episodes with a hastily slapped together "season finale"... I do hope it doesn't go all "Kring" on us and suck out loud, but I don't really have too much hope. As for when the strike ends... I think I'm done with broadcast TV and I'm not alone. I'm sure from time to time there'll still be shows that don't suck, but really, the format needs to just lie down and die already like silent films or pulp magazines or music CDs and any other outdated entertainment delivery systems that have outlived their usefulness.

I'm very sad theat they didn't move it to Sci-fi or give it a second chance to ramp up. ...by another network than it would any other tv season - the writer's strike is not only stopping production on existing shows, but it's about to the point where pilots for new series would start to get shopped around to the networks, and nobody's getting to write those either. by executor

Decent pilot, followed by a string of bad Quantum Leap "time-travel-of-the-week" stories. Then it got great for 3 or 4 eps. for the FBI-investigation/stolen money arc. Know why? Because every character had something to do that interacted with each other. The wife didn't just whine because Dan wasn't home. The brother didn't just shake his head and say "What's wrong with you Dan?" There was mythology building and drama and tension. And then that arc ended and we got another "time-travel-of-the-week" story this week. Except now Dan's brother's "he's on drugs" angle has been given to Dr. Girlfriend. And the wife is still whiney. And the promise the show had for a episodes is gone. Oh, and so is the show.

Normally I would see this as the end of a show, however considering the strike, there are no other shows for the actors to move on to, NBC knows this. Why pay to keep them around when there are no scripts to film? I suspect we'll see this with other shows as well. Hope it does come back, maybe with Scott Bakula as a guest star playing an 'evil leaper'.

I hope someone else picks up the show, it's solid and well-written, I'm sure it can find an audience on a network that cares for it. NBC certainly didn't. Maybe the networks should just give up the pretense and run nothing but quiz, talk and reality shows. Leave the creative stuff to cable networks.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Sure, there were something interesting takes on the time-travel genre, but there's only so much an audience is willing to take of Dan getting a headache and disappearing at the wrong time. When JOURNEYMAN played the card of Dan disappearing and his kid is left alone in a crowd, I decided I was done. Who honestly wants to watch that? Obviously, not enough people to keep the show alive.

besides canceling a great show like Journeyman, is the obvious product placement. Such as the color picture Olivia was holding up in the past with her and Dan holding up A&W Root Beer glasses in it. It was a terrible photoshop to begin with. At least 30 Rock tries to be funny with their product placement, such as the Snapple tie ins or GE products.

Journeyman is a FOX-production show that is airing on NBC.Now 2 weeks ago, a story was published saying there were concernes that the prime-time boss was being unethical, since he was showing favoritism to his old production house (the one that is doing the US version of "Ugly Betty".) A job he left to run NBC prime-time.Another layer to all this is that NBC News (through MSNBC and CNBC) and FOX News Channel and FOX Business Channel are at war. So on a boardroom politics front, having a show produced and technically owned by the enemy on your channel doesn't make much sense. A really great place for "Journeyman" would be FX. That would let FOX keep it in-house.-----later-----m

    by indyjonez100

about the turf war between Fox and NBC, it's becoming harder and harder to find shows produced by other companys appear on a competitors network. But this is capitalism at its greatest, where we are seeing fewer and fewer production companys and only a handful run the business and can pick and choose which shows make it and which ones get canned.

    silver lining

    by pviii

    check this from ew.com:
Although NBC isn't ordering a full-season of Journeyman, it hasn’t officially canceled the show either. In fact, there's a remote chance it could get a second season pickup if the strike continues through the spring, when the town is usually developing pilots for the next TV season. "If there is scorched earth and there are no pilots, then that’s a whole different thing," admits Falls. "There is probably a better than average chance that we would come back. But nobody wants that. I would throw my show on the sword if this strike would end beforehand. Too many people suffer from a long strike.”

They moved Criminal Intent to your sister channel USA, didn't they? Bonnie Hammer, don't you run both USA and SciFi?

    Is Network TV Dead?

    by tom reagan

If not, they seem to be doing their best to off themselves. The networks NEED quality shows like this (or Friday Night Lights) to maintain respectability (they're called loss leaders, folks). Otherwise your just an churning out the flavor of the week game show and reality TV--eventually that's all people will think of (when they do think of you) and they'll start skipping right over you on the dial (dials--remember those). More and more of the TV I watch is on cable and that's thanks to crappy network TV.

    by spank

J-man was dead weeks ago. If NBC owned the series they would have left it going, but nope- I'm afraid it's dead. It'll make for a great box set that I can give to friends as presents for years to come, but it's dead. I PRAY Sci-Fi doesn't pick this show up, especially after their "treatment" of Battlestar and Flash (Alex Raymond is SCREAMING from beyond the grave!) Gordon. It's BEST to leave some things short and great and ALONE! Sorry we didn't get more Dan Vassar because it's obvious to us few that had the sense to follow and wrap our brains around what was going on that there was a hell of a great amount of entertainment potential there. Sorry that NBC, whose GREAT idea for a Monday night escape was dogged by a weak adolescent Chuck and a surprisingly weak and redundant Heroes 2nd season, (because their initial programming resoning was sound) ends with them killing off the only true intelligent gem of the night this season. Sorry to see they couldn't hang on and allow the season to finish out because the WAS a destination the series was headed for, and it WAS getting better and better, and more and more interesting as it went along. BUT, on a net that rewards us not with second chances and additional showings in a time of strike to TRY to build a stronger word-of-mouth audience on work they've already paid for, they would rather WASTE their money, and our time and loyalty on more Deal or No Deal and the Spike oriented American Gladiators- well frankly it's their money to waste, but I won't waste my time watching that tripe- that's what cable and wrestling's for. FINALLY, sorry, to the many talkbackers here that never gave this show the chance it deserved, or the many fantasy fans desperately looking for good entertainment who so shortsightedly dismissed this show as a Quantum Leap rip, when it really wasn't, it was MUCH better. I was ALMOST one of you sad short sighted lot, but I'm glad I stuck it out and watched because, like Twin Peaks, Firefly, Profit, and even Jericho (oh yeah, THAT show's gonna see a 3rd season- RIGHT!), J-Man was a GEM you missed, but MAYBE you'll figure that out some rainy weekend when you have NOTHING left to do but watch that DVD set you got for X-mas from your buddy that knew better and gave you A set. It's all our loss that this show is gone, but especially you short sighted "sci-fi" loving talkbackers who close mindedly never gave this show a chance. You see, with your lackluster Chuck and your sad redundant Heroes flailing on this sad network (that's now paying back advertisers for having such a LOUSY sense in programming skill), all you're doing is convincing more net execs that QUALITY shows like this aren't worth their time and loss of money. Thanks guys, continue to joke about how this show is a pale Quantum Leap and keep wondering why in a few years there is still no real quality sci-fi on network television. Atta Boys!!

    About NBC/Universal...

    by ds9sisko

Like a number of other talkbackers, I was one who almost dismissed "Journeyman" and would have if not for the gentle prodding of some of my closest friends. And I gave the show a chance around episode 3 and never looked back. "JM" had become more and more tantalizing and engaging as "time" and each episode marched forward. The complications were enormously interesting as Dan's actions in the past affected the present in a very real way. Kevin McKidd was excellent as Dan and I believe too few have given credit to Gretchen Egolf who did amazing work as Katie. But the handwriting was on the wall for JM: from the weekly falling ratings, to the lousy 18-49 demo numbers, to consistently comign in thrid behind CBS and ABC, there was no way the show was going to make it given its increasingly complicated mythology. Having said all that, while I don't blame NBC for cancelling JM, a cursory look at NBC Universal's strategies reveal a certain level of insanity that cannot be easily explained by drugs. First was the widely reported decision to front load most nights in the 8PM-9PM slots with reality programming. Then was the nasty split with Apple over iTunes pricing, instead of staying and taking that money and STILL creating new revenue streams; instead, they have fractured themselves into dozens of pieces on the web with Hulu, HooDoo, Voodoo, Fanfare, and so on. They've over promoted many of their shows, engaged in hop scotch scheduling (remember that this season's original schedule was far different than what aired), saturated their ancilliary networks like SciFi and USA with repurposed airings (which actually serve to devalue a show in my opinion), and even showed agressive disdain for its daytime soaps...now numbering one. There is prudent cost-cutting and then there is paralyzing cheapness and greed, the kind of which hasn't been seen since the days when Larry Tisch decimated CBS News (from which it has never recovered) and Cap Cities took a hacksaw to ABC before selling it off to Disney. The only difference now is that Universal has turned into the equivalent of Jigsaw and the sadists from Hostel in terms of their absolute contempt toward common sense. There is something seriously wrong not just at the network level, but in the upper corporate echelons of Universal.

    by mrd

Seriously, the notion of a person traveling through time and helping people hasn't been new for ages. The main thing is how it's done - what's the hook. With QL, the hook was Sam's roleplaying, leavened with a good amount of humor via Al. Journeyman played it straight - maybe too straight; it could've used more laughs- and put it's own spin by focusing on the effects on his family, and the overarcing mystery. I have enjoyed the show, and I'll be sorry to see Kellerman and Verenus out of work, but I can't say I'm going to miss it either.

This episode SPOILERS featured the return of Paul Reubens' sewer dwelling character, resolved the cliffhanger from the previous episode (In which Chuck learns that ned accidentally killed her father), prominently featured the Aunts, contained a major revelation about Chuck's parentage and featured unprecedented (on this show) drug based hallucinations (an animated walking crab cake, a floating glowing mermaid) and a first mention of Emerson Cod's daughter, plus repeated uses of the word "cocks", and nothing. Or do we have to wait until that show's barely clinging to life support just like JOURNEYMAN? Ray Wise and Missy Peregrym's cute girl-next-door smile deserve some serious AICN pimpage.

Oh, and I'm betting NBC is quitely axing BIONIC WOMAN. The January series reboot is not going to happen.

    by spank

When you're making your list of series canned way before their run was over, how can you list Angel (2 GREAT years, followed by 2 mediocre years, followed by 1 messy scattered year), Tru Calling (stumble, stumble, stumble) or Drive (even Gumball Rally was better), when you've had shows like Twin Peaks (which was starting to stumble at the end- but still SO much fun to watch), Deadwood, Wonderfalls, Profit, Kindred, Space Above and Beyond (which like JM was getting beter as it was finishing up), Brimstone, Firefly, Miracles, American Gothic (though that was tumbling at the end as well) Crusades (which had maybe 3-4 eps that scratched that series potential), Space Rangers, the list goes on and on of net exec stupidity- not to mention the pilots that never saw airtime even in the last couple of years like Global Frequency, Mercy Reef (okay, that one maybe not), Return to Oz, Dark Shadows (vol 30...the lest just goers on. Most Network and Cable station execs have NO clue what makes quality long, lasting programming- just look at Andromeda, or the last 2 attempts at Trek (well, 4 if you count the movies)- If you ask me the good shows are the accidents, and great shows running past 2-3 season truly the exceptions. Ratings are antiquated at best and were totally unreliable back when there were only 3 networks, let alone cable, net, and recorders. That's every fan's frustration- all the execs can see are innaccurate numbers that they try to push into dollars- screw long term loyalty and quality, those aspects might make for eternal merchandising sales (that far outstrip the immediate advertising dollar), but it doesn't make the bank account grow IMMEDIATELY as much as spinning numbers in front of advertisers. BBC is learning. Out of all the "nets" I'm able to watch they're figuring out that long term loyalty to quality shows PAYS HUGE, and Dr Who (except for the lastest season- which was spectacular) has been one of the shlockiest shows at times on the airwaves. Now it's spawning a huge cash cow for them. I think it's AMAZING that NBC is running the remaining shows of Journeyman- if the strike wasn't on I'm willing to wager they would have cut this show off at the knees weeks ago. And yet flawed shows that they "own" get to continue, have new back talent infusion and exec loyalty that boggles the mind.

the new formula for a show's success. They finished a whole season, they didn't quite find a hit, but it wasn't the poorest rated show either...put it on DVD and see how it sells before you make any type of decision. I'm pretty sure strong DVD sales kept Arrested Development on for three seasons instead of less than two. Genre shows in particular seem to have much stronger life after initial airings, you might as well test those waters before you measure the success of these shows. You might as well run a marathon on sci-fi or some other station, maybe even make a bit more money off the show that way, and pull in new fans for a second season. I'm not even looking at this as a fan of the show, I'm looking at it strictly as a business decision.

The show actually go better as it went along. I Tivo'd them to watch when there wasn't much else on, and got hooked. It's too bad that NBC doesn't have the balls to let it stew a little more. Personally, I think it is the best new show of the year.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if Tivo'd programs are tracked, and is that information provided to the networks? DVR and Tivo have changed the way many Americans watch TV. We don't have to watch them when they are on anymore. I would bet that Journeyman finds a strong audience amony repeats, DVD and people who will watch their recorded shows when now that the new shows are going into repeat mode. Just curious...

There's certainly no reason NBC shouldn't be rerunning BSG in Prime-Time from the beginning right now. Especially during the strike... and trying to capitalize on the great word-of-mouth surrounding the show. There are lots of people who have heard about it but aren't ready to pay for Netflix/online/dvds yet or they don't even have Sci-Fi Channel or know where it is on their dial. I mean, what does NBC have to lose? They're just playing repeats and scrambling to come up reality shows anyway. Yeah, I know what some schmuck exec might say 'we tried that once and it bombed" Right, I'm a fan and I didn't even know it was on in that night fucktard. Play it from the beginning in a decent time-slot with some promotion/advertising (almost like it's a new show). With the strike going on it's a chance to have some quality programming in Prime-Time, and maybe gain some new fans in the process. Shit, it will at least spike DVD sales and help promote season 4.1! I'd play the show every night until the premiere in April. And just to stay on topic here...give Journeyman another shot too.

2 Hollywood Reporter paragraphs that says it all

    by rbrog77

The broadcast networks' trigger happiness when it comes to cancellations stems not only from stronger reliance on ratings than cable, but also from their management policies. It's a revolving door at the top of the broadcast nets, and most executives' bonuses are based on successful shows they've put on the air. So they have a strong incentive to try out a new show rather than sticking with a so-so performer that could eventually grow into a hit.

"The whole system is designed to undermine the creation of long-term assets," one studio exec said.

    by billypilgrim

about the system but does absolutely nothing about it. Every season we hear the same thing. This show or that show would have been great if it was just given a chance. Then some exec somewhere wrings his hands and wails is despair until he gets the check in the mail. What a bunch of spineless wimps. Gnats have bigger balls. Next time tell the truth and say you don't give a fuck about any cancellations as long as the cash keeps flowing in.

    Mr Saxon...

    by spank

Dr. Who has been at it's VERY best this last season- actually stretching the cliche'd "time travel story", but it IS all good, despite the foam rubber aliens, terrible modelling, and sometime HORRIBLE writing- "Schlock" can be entertaining at times and DEFINITELY has it's place. Now if only the BBC could get their acts together and revise Prisoner and Blake's 7 (or something just as space opera-ish)...there would be more great stuff to watch. I tell friends that IF they HAVE to compare Journeyman to something that it's like a few years in one of the Dr's (Pertwee I think...)incarnations when the Timelords "allowed" him to time travel as long as they went where they wanted him to go. One of the points I hope they make in the last 2 eps of Journeyman is that they were TESTING him earlier on and once they were satisfied he would work they (whoever is sending him in time) started putting faith into his instincts as a reporter and are now to the point with him that they are working with him to correct his mistakes (the 2 parter), and even help him smooth out more of his own private life (the latest ep)- plus allow Livia to start a life of her own in her own time period. Just a great show, and an idea that, if left to grow- which it won't- would have been landmark plotting and writing for an American time travel show.

Feel like I just had the wind kicked the shit out of me. Journeyman was my fracking favorite show this fall. I don't give a frack about what the ratings say about the show, It deserved better than to get canned like that without a little more fracking effort to keep it going. It would have caught on, and became a big hit, no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

    by spank

Don't worry about Friday Night Lights, if NBC treated it like Journeyman it would have been pulled after the first 3 eps. Really though, "quality" might not be the opperative word here as it's OBVIOUS that some exec in NBC somewhere LOVES this show. Personally, I was NEVER attracted to it, despite what critics might say, shows about high school life, unless they have a HUGE amount of adolescent humor or some over the top fantasy element (like Smallville did during it's high point), are DULL and will NEVER work on entertainment networks (unless they're low budget "reality" shows- those always seem to work no matter how silly). Even shows like Chuck and Reaper, ripe with adolescent humor possibilities (Reaper REALLY succeeds in this- Chuck...well not-so-much) feature leads that are over 21 and able to drink. If you want to see dramas about high school football just visit your local game and sit and listen- believe me it'll be MUCH closer to real life (lol!) plus the fresh air won't hurt either.
