The series still had plenty of flaccid episodes in season three (Eko’s departure was awful and the Hurley-fixes-a-van episode remains especially disposable), but the show also saw Desmond somehow transformed into a seer by the Swan Station explosion, and the introduction of a giant invisible fence, a semi-visible Others leader named Jacob, fertility doctor Juliet Burke, and most intriguingly the ageless enigma that is Richard Alpert. Plus, the John Locke who liked to throw knives at the beginning of season one re-emerged. As the season roared toward its amazing third-season finale, it recaptured fan imagination and restored confidence to the franchise.
