The Producers Of ALEXANDER and TERMINATOR 2 Ally To Remake Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS!?!?

Published at:  Dec 10, 2007 10:02:04 AM CST

Merrick here...

This one's a tough one for me; METROPOLIS is one of my favorite movies of all time.

For those who haven't seen it...you should. There's a super-great restoration of the film, which is available HERE. It's a strange movie to be sure, but its thematic & aesthetic impact on the SF genre is profound & is evident in many "classic" entries...including STAR WARS (C-3P0's design, Coruscant in the prequels) and BLADE RUNNER. The list goes on, and is impressive.

Here's a trailer for a recent restoration of the 1927 film:

A previous restoration of the film was mounted by composer Giorgio Moroder back in 1984 , who (quite controversially) re-scored the film with a contemporary soundtrack (including tracks from Queen's Freddy Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, and more).

And now, it seems, we're getting a full-on remake. Producer Thomas Schuehly (Oliver Stone's ALEXANDER and THE NAME OF THE ROSE) and Mario Kassar (Executive Producer of TERMINATORs 2 & 3, RAMBOs 1 & 2, TOTAL RECALL, etc.) are teaming up for a remake.

"With the overwhelming role technology plays in our daily lives, the growing gap between rich and poor, including the gradual elimination of the middle class, the story of 'Metropolis' is a frightening reflection of our society that takes place in an all too possible not too distant future," said Schuehly.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

I'm really not sure what to say here: the Geek in me kind of wants to see this world realized via modern FX techniques (although I doubt they'd look half as nuanced and atmospheric as the original film's highly detailed & complex model work).

But a bigger part of me fears that...almost certainly...the thematic & spiritual heart and soul of the concept will be ripped from this project in favor of spectacle. "The city's gonna blow up because the workers overloaded The Machines - gotta stop the Machine meltdown!" (cue strobe lighted Michael Bayhem). "Gotta stop the rampaging/partying Maria android! Here's a special EMP gun! One shot..." You know, that kind of crap.

The System rarely (if ever) generates big-budget movies that hinge on esoteric issues like "class struggle" ...although I think a good writer could likely bend the story's conceits to match today's socio-economic landscape here in the U.S. - i.e. tweaking the film's "working class -vs- the elite" scenario into more of a NEW JACK CITY-ish "Republicans -vs- the poor" approach. I'm just using this as an EXAMPLE, but...whatever the case...I firmly believe that (for any METROPOLIS remake to work) it has to feel relevant, and not just be a pointless regurgitation. It has to be a project which encourages audiences to reflect what they're seeing back into the "real world".

But...WOULD this be allowed to happen? Would The Powers That Be actually bankroll a think piece/commentary whose budget would certainly surpass $100,000,000. Provocative and disquieting questions.

PROFOUNDLY interested in how this shakes out. If you know more,
WE'D LOVE TO HEAR IT!!

Metropolis came out in 1927 and it STILL speaks to humanity today. I dont think the remake would have endurance of 5 years never mind EIGHTY years. And just having the name of Mario Kassar involved makes think this will be an awful movie. Kassar never had a good idea he never wanted to destroy and turn it into a 70 minute cumshot of gunfetish. Nah. Wont happen.

The only way this could work is if they do it all green screen in a completely over the top steam punk world. It could be like Sky Captain but in black and white (damn I hope they keep it b&w). Oh and BTW, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" was remade in 05' in this green screen style too, also another good one is "Able Edwards."

    by cobbio

As well-intentioned as this seems, remaking "Metropolis" isn't feasible or even possible. I mean, it's possible, sure... but how do you sell it to the iPhone, network-centric public? The whole idea entirely falls apart.
"Metropolis" is a classic film, an iconic film, but the theme of class-struggle and a violent lower-class uprising in this corporately controlled world wouldn't fly to those in control. Not in any way, shape, or form.
    Guaranteed.
Which brings me to my next point: a remake wouldn't actually be "Metropolis," it would be a project with the same name but an entirely different plot. You'd have to add dialogue (hmm...), all kinds of modern tweakings and FX, and the product would emerge a silly, stale, meaningless farce that no one would want to see.
    This movie won't happen.

Merrick, you know the answers to your questions

    by badmrwonka

basically you're asking if any of us have hope that Hollywood is capable of remaking an iconic movie, keeping the heart and soul of the original without de-balling it or rendering it useless, keeping the spirit of inventive visual effects while updating them, all the while making a movie that's accesible enough to find an audience...let me ask you this...you think the Seahawks are going to win the superbowl this year?hollywood only cares about money. remaking a movie like this is merely a novelty, and whatever dog and pony show they trot out will have only a superficial relationship with the original, and the result will be a movie that may not be terrible, but certainly will not be a worthy remake on any level. why not just take the source material, flip it enough that it's not exactly a remake, retitle it, and let it stand on its own? using this title makes no sense to me. people that know the original well are jsut going to hateoyu, and people that don't, aren't going to know the difference.sigh...

Well, this is almost as bad as it gets.

    by redbox

I guess it doesn't matter. Nothing original is going to happen when Tool #1 and Tool #2 get together and try to recreate Fritz Lang. I'm sure it will fall into the same hole that the remakes of Psycho and The Manchurian Candidate did. But it's so sad that someone out there wants to remake it. Do they love it that much? No. Do they think they could do a better job? No. But they hope that some of the respectability, taste and visionary creative praise and stature of the original work will at least rub off on their marketing efforts. They will go on and on to anyone who wants to hear, about how much they were influenced by Metropolis and how much this new film is a tribute and an extension of the first film, but it's just the biggest bunch of Hollywood lies. The truth is, that Metropolis has already been remade. In Bladerunner, Star Wars, Terminator, The Matrix, Sin City, THX 1138, Soylent Green, Brazil, Logan's Run, Sleeper, Planet of the Apes, and a hundred other dystopian epics, Metropolis is the foundation and inspiration. So what can happen here? Probably nothing good. If by some small chance, they do make a quality film, I will be happy to see it. If not, I will be happy to see it fall back into the obscure world of remakes. Cheers!

Listen, I know you don't think you can enjoy silent films, but you can! I believe in you! First, we could get you into a reading for beginners program and then those words on the screen will make sense to you. It really makes a big difference in understanding the plot. Otherwise, you could have your Mom read the words on the screen aloud for you. She won't mind. She already transcribes your talkback messages for you right? Hey, you got a lot of support there buddy, don't worry. When you get further in your reading you can learn all about how cool silent films were and classic black and white films and even, these things called books! I know you think everyone in the world is just watching color action movies made after 1985 and playing the Super Nofriendo 360, but that's just you and the other 13 year olds you hang with. Reply to Talkback

  • haven't seen it but its in the queue. The only way a Metropolis remake would be worth considering would be if they gave it to a director that gave a shit. I say this could be the chance for Tom Tykwer to make it big in America. Or give Darren Aronofsky a chance to make a huge movie. Though hopes are slim for that to happen. So one of my favorite movies is going to bastardized. Plus this can't be a CG all the way it needs to have sets and models. I could however see Downy Jr. as the lead role? Man I would like to see this happen, but again I don't. This movie is by far the only silent movie that could probably be shown in theaters today and people would go.

With all the garbage that is remakes as Hollywood can't come up with an original idea, and not only doing remakes, but trying to remake classics and pawn it off as something great well I think Ted can be forgiven. Jack, your basic premise is flawed.

    by skeletonparty

You think Hollywood can keep the original themes intact. They can not. History has shown us they will fail so extravagantly that the remake will virtually erase all memory of the original. Or, even worse, render the original only viewable in the context of the remake - basically dragging the original down with it. The original will become "quaint."

You think the masses will seek the original if they are exposed to a retread. They will not. Most young people today aren't even aware that they are watching remakes.

However, if the public is exposed to a re-release, they will actually see the original.

    Democrats: Party of the rich

    by jbs0209

Democrats like to define themselves as the party of poor and middle-income Americans, but a new study says they now represent the majority of the nation's wealthiest congressional districts.

In a state-by-state, district-by-district comparison of wealth concentrations based on Internal Revenue Service income data, Michael Franc, vice president of government relations at the Heritage Foundation, found that the majority of the nation's wealthiest congressional jurisdictions were represented by Democrats.

He also found that more than half of the wealthiest households were concentrated in the 18 states where Democrats hold both Senate seats.

"If you take the wealthiest one-third of the 435 congressional districts, we found that the Democrats represent about 58 percent of those jurisdictions," Mr. Franc said.

Mr. Franc's study also showed that contrary to the Democrats' tendency to define Republicans as the party of the rich, "the vast majoritiy of unabashed conservative House members hail from profoundly middle-class districts."

"I just found the pattern across the board to be very interesting. That pattern shows the likelihood of electing a Democrat to the House is very closely correlated with how many wealthy households are in that district," Mr. Franc said in an interview with The Washington Times.

Are the Power centers way of distracting you from the truth... There are no real political parties. Oh there used to be.. A certian group of people who ideals were similiar to yours so you naturally gravitated to them.. That doesn't exsist anymore. Parties take you attention away from the real struggle, money, power and energy. the US has the power, China has the money and the middle east and south america has the energy.. Don't associate yourself with a political party in the US.. Your party should be "READING"... Read about how the wealthy countries are being destroyed by free trade and the developing world is reaping the benefits.. If the American consumer, who spends 13 TRILLION dollars a year stopped spending money, the whole system would crash.. It's all bullshit. Political parties take your focus away from unfair trade agreements, soft borders flowing drugs in, intercontinental superfreeways, worthless currency, poor credit ratings for your contry, constitutions being ignored, rights taken away in the name of liberty and "war of terror".... WAKE UP.. It's happening...

Do those of you who live in Los Angeles know that the Chinese are building a massive shipping port on the southwestern coast of Mexcio so that when the US is done building the NAFTA freeway (with Rudi Guilanni's law firm buying all the land and overseeing the planning), they will start sending all the ships there???? In effect, taking away 95% of all ships docking there??? LA will be crippled after that and the US will no longer control what comes into this country.. That is both parties pushing for that..

Also, they are now drilling for oil off the coast of CUBA, 75 miles from the US coast, in oil well reserves that run under what is now considered both Cuban and US waters.....

    Remaking silent films...

    by zerocorpse

This is usually a bad idea. One of my Top 10 movies of all time is Nosferatu, and the attempts to make a talkie version of it-- well, they suck. "Nosferatu the Vampire" was awful. It was true to the original, but mixed in elements of the Hollywood Dracula movies to get a weird amalgam that was just slow, dull, and annoying.
How would people feel if they remade City Lights, or Gold Rush, or any of the classic comedies? These would SUCK, because silent film is a different medium entirely, and the stories for silent films don't usually lend themselves to sound effects and actors who need to be heard. It will end up being too noisy. People will be talking constantly just to fill space.
Watch the original, and then watch Star Wars if you want a talkie.

    Re: Remaking Blade Runner...

    by zerocorpse

I don't think they would, as the FINAL CUT was just in theaters and did OK.
However, I would FULLY SUPPORT a new movie based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" that is a closer, more faithful translation of the book, with Mercerism, Buster Friendly, and all the characters and locales being what they were in the book. I want a "DADoES?" that has Luba Luft, and is based in San Francisco. I want the situation with Pris to be as tense and sexual as it was in the book. I want J.S. Isidore and Roy Baty instead of Roy Batty. I want the fake police station filled with androids. I want Buster Friendly and his Friendly Friends to be broadcasting Verhoeven-style between scenes. I want Iran to threaten to dial an argument. I want Rick to pine for that real animal, and lament his broken sheep.
Blade Runner is NOT "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" --- It's a gorgeous, perfect fucking movie, but it's a creature all it's own, with very little reference to Phillip K. Dick's original story. The book deserves to be seen by the masses in it's full form, with religious and social commentary intact, and none of this Ridley Scott belated "Deckard is a Replicant" crap (I love Ridley Scott, but his whole Deckard thing is just weird and not at all true to the book, original script, or original version of the film. It was a fucked-up afterthought that he ran with, and it's really annoying.)
Remaking "The Godfather" wouldn't matter much. The original was pretty true to the books-- Just distilled a bit.
Remaking Star Wars would be a bad move, but it might also be interesting if it weren't George Lucas (whom I respect and admire for giving us Star Wars in the first place) were not the director, and didn't write any of the dialogue. I mean, I'd pay to see a Star Wars remake directed by Peter Jackson or Sam Raimi. I'd say Paul Verhoeven, but he already sorta did that with "The Fifth Element"

It was a reflection of the times (Hitler actually admired the fil, but the director [Lang] defected to America. His wife, a Nazi sympathizer, remained in Germany). A film that is so flexibly (mis)interpreted will look, Hollywood-style, like Ron Howard's HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (pastels/MTV editing in lieu of Expressionism). I'm not usually too riled up by the thought of unnecessary remakes. It can be frustrating, but generally, I figure I'll always have the original and if the remake is at least popular with the masses, then I can hope that the new generation will be spurred to pick up the original and discover something special. But for me, there are some classics that shouldn't be touched. Some movies that I feel should be left alone. Metropolis is one of those movies. Updating that silent black-and-white world to one of colour and noise is a depressing thought.

just a post: A remake of this per se is not a bad idea- It's 80 years old. It isn't like remaking the HItcher from 1980-something. however, they will utterly fail to transpose anything that was good in the original and will turn it into a CGI wankfest starring Big Willy Style and SHia Lebeouf as "amusing sidekick bnumber 1" which makes it an awful idea. Scarface is a successful remake. Casablanca has been remade- into Barb Wire. It was shit. Why is anyone surprised at this?
