The Fake BNAT 9 Line-up!

Published at:  Dec 07, 2007 11:31:16 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... this is the first time in the history of doing these pre-lists that I've been drunk... but I just came in from the BNAT 9 pre-party where I discovered folks that flew from Poland, St. Louis and Los Angeles - all for a chance at the STAND BY LINE. Holy fuck... There were attempted bribes with booze and alcohol - which I drank and then gave them a "MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU" in return... But they are in a Beagle and a Lil Heb's hands. Not mine.

So - now it is time to give you hints via an alternative list of titles that may - in some drunken delusional manner - relate to the films that may or may not be playing. Realize... I could just be fucking with you. So here we go...

1. ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976)

2. DUNE (1984)

3. KISS ME DEADLY (1955)

4. WAR AND PEACE (1956)

5. THE STORY DR. WASSELL (1944)

6. DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN (1972)

7. RAMBO (2008)

8. M (1931)

9. THE PHANTOM CREEPS (1939)

10. DEMON WITH A GLASS HAND (1964)

11. LE FIN ABSOLUE DU MONDE (197?)

12. FREEWAY (1996)

So there ya go... There's little treats inbetween and tons of fun spread throughout. This will be a very very fun BNAT - So sit back and enjoy the brain teaser that is this list. Remember - it probably only makes sense in my mind... but then, it's my party, my celebration of film - btw - there's one of the films in that list above - that I don't even know what is in the line-up. The first time I've had a legitimate surprise in the last 7 years of BNAT.

For you going for STAND BY. I wish you the very best of luck... remember - it's on you to get your ticket for the drawing... and there's no need to get there before 11am, but don't be late. And everybody else - 10am - we're going to try to get everyone in before 11am, so we can get all the standby seats filled before 11:30, because - the show this year kinda kicks into gear with stuff on screen at approximately 11:40. SO - LET IT BEGIN!!!

    by robinp

This has been going on for years...Harry holds his BNAT, and posts a list of movies that supposedly give those of us who can't attend a flavor of what they're seeing. Fair enough. Somehow, the list above leaves a sour taste because he says he COULD be fucking with us (okay - if he WANTS to, I guess he can)but drunk or not - he's coming over as gloatier than usual - which is strange considering he has the bare faced cheek to actually ASK for gifts, tributes, offerings...and "pwesents". Beggars normally tend to be a little more humble and a lot less elitist.

I mean, Trick-or-Treat's really the only stand out. ST and CW both come out in two weeks (and I've already seen ST). I'm sure it was a lot of fun, but that's definitely a weak line-up compared to the last two years. I was sure they'd get Pineapple Express, Be Kind Rewind, or at least Cloverfield. Not gonna lie, I would still go in a heartbeat, but it kind of takes away the sting of not getting in.

    by gah

Yeah, the exclusives were all kind of weak, especially since Sweeny Todd is almost out and probably four people in the audience had heard of Trick R' Treat. (I think they were hoping it was the 1986 version). Some of the older movies played well, but it was a pretty disappointing year consider what's on the horizon this Spring/Summer (Iron Man, Hellboy 2, Indiana Jones, Speed Racer, etc). Apparently the coolest part of this year's BNAT was that everyone got free HD DVD players. Holy shit. That's nice.

True. It's not 300 redux... but, they both have epic battle scenes and a side love story. Basically, I think someone who enjoyed 300 would like Mongol.

But, if you like Mongol, you very well might not like 300, as there is quite a bit more to the story and not just Leonidas screaming for 117 mins.

Warner Bros pushed it back to March, because they mistakenly thought a Halloween movie would do better in the spring than against the latest SAW installment.

So now it'll make 0 dollars instead of the modest amount it would have taken in during October. I was really into seeing it for Halloween, but it's not the sort of film I'll seek out in March, you know?

I'd place a bet that Cloverfield was shown though given that it's coming out in a month or so and test screenings have been reported. RodHolt: Liar and bitch.

    by some dude

Weird, despite all the tough talk from RodHolt, Eli Roth's "Jew ass" made it through the show entirely unkicked. I am shocked that someone on the internet would claim to be a tough guy and then not follow through. Poor form, kid. Other than that little "disappointment" the show was awesome. It was really a fun line-up. The new flicks were all pretty good, with "Charlie Wilson's War," "Mongol" and "Trick R Treat" (Go NYU) being my favorites. Very surprised at the amount of arterial spray from on-screen wounds in "Sweeney Todd." The Rambo clip featured top-notch mayhem. Was very pleased to see "Goodbye Uncle Tom" on the big-screen - what an ending! (that theme really does sound like the title sequence music from Commando) The only stinker was Teen Lust, but that did have some jiggly blondes in it, plus a George "Buck" Flower role, so it wasn't all bad. Also, I never before noticed that the trailer for "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" uses the MediaBreak music from Robocop. Thanks, Toshiba, for the free player. Will send in a proper write up when I get home.

    by 433

Everything was great up to "The Poughkeepsie Tapes", which was pretty meh. Then Tim League's pick, "Teen Lust", which had some pretty old teens and not nearly enough lust. "Trick 'R Treat was damn good. "Sweeney Todd" was also good, and "Charlie Wilson's War was excellent. Add that to "Pickup on South Street", plus some Preston Sturges and some Kirk Douglas made it a really fun time. Not as strong as the near-perfect last two years, but I'm always very happy to attend. It was a blast.

One of the lucky five. I think you'll hear a recurring theme of the night. The first two-thirds of the lineup was AMAZING. Every movie was good and had something to say. Definitely the tone was more somber, but It was just great movie to great movie to great movie and then...The Poughkeepsie Tapes sucked all the positive energy out of the room and the sado-masochistic march to the end began. By the time Trick R Treat came around, the movie would've had to suck absolute and utter ass to end the fest on a negative note. It didn't and was pretty much the perfect end note for the brutal second half of that lineup.

How you think Harry is some kind of magician when it comes to this shit. He's not.

He's cozy with a couple of studios, really just one, but I'll give hime some credit.

And if you look at a lot of the sneak flicks from Fantastic Fest, BNATs and Alamo screenings, you can figure out which one real easy.

I was angry I didn't get in for a second year, but how mad can you get? It's the dude's birthday. He can do what he wants.

I just can't believe he used Carpenter and Kurt Russell but apparently didn't screen anything from either. Lame!

Where the hell is the Austin John Carpenter film fest? Let's have one and get him here before he's "unavailable"... you know?

I am VERY glad I was not chosen to attend this year's BNAT. If that was the real lineup, I would have been disappointed to spend close to a grand in airfare, hotel and such to see it. The HD-DVD player would have been a sweet grab but prob not worth the expense of the trip. But, here's hoping that some year in the future I'll be able to go. But, the odds are never in our favor.

    BNAT 9 was incredible.

    by stubbadub

The presentation on HD DVD was fun. They showed off some of the special features on the discs, so now I know that if I want to know what type of plane is best for running drugs, and which route is best to get back from Columbia to Miami, I'll need to pick up Miami Vice on HD DVD and all that info will be there.

The Great McGinty was very funny, and seemed to play well to the crowd at large. That one was about a corrupt guy who becomes a politician and tries to do something right for a change. That sequed well into Charlie Wilson's war, a film that was completely off my radar, but was my favorite film of the night. It was another one that seemed well received. Philip Seymore Hoffman was so perfect in that role (no surprise).

The message I got from Pick Up on South St was that you have to beat someone into loving you. It was pretty good, but far from my favorite of the night.

Mongol was excellent. Amazing battle scense and some truly interesting characters. It ran a bit long, but that is a minor quibble.

The abominable Dr Phibes was another of my favorites of the film. Not many people around me seemed to like it, but I'll probably be running out to pick up the DVD.

Sweeney Todd was everything I'd hoped it would be. Fan-fucking-tastic!

Lonely are the Brave was a good movie that was a little too slow for watching at 1:00 AM after all the other films.

Then came the dreadful Poughkeepsie Tapes. This might have gotten a worse reaction than Farewell Uncle Tom. Before the movie we were told the filmaker's were there for a Q&A after the film, but afterwards Tim League came up to announce that there had been a mix-up and they had to leave early (no one was buying this). "Let's all try to put that behind us and move forward."

Teen Lust was a really bad teen sex comedy that had me giggling constantly. Horrible, horrible movie, but it was welcome after the painful poughkeepsie tapes.

The episode of Star Trek is definitely a classic, but I'd seen it a bunch before this.

Right around breakfast we were given a medical surgery video to watch. Nice shot of them cutting around the anus, pulling up on the penis, and pulling out the urethra with plenty o' blood and flesh, all the while playing some kind of crazy music over the top. Mmmm, those eggs were yummy.

Farewell Uncle Tom was completely unbearable. By this time I'd lost all hope in humanity, so Trick R' Treat was a welcome end to the festivities. I enjoyed the hell out of that movie, and it's probably one I'll be seeing again in the theater come next October.

As weak as the schedule might seem compared to past BNATs, it was clearly in the spirit of what BNAT is supposed to be, and I'll be just as happy next year if the night is anywhere near as good as this one.

    by stubbadub

First, thanks for the tip George.

Second, film geek does not mean the only thing you like are unreleased genre pictures. This fest not only gives us the opportunity to see films before the general public, but it gives us the opportunity to see older films that are worth seeing. Until things turned ugly with the Poughkeepsie Tapes every single thing was well worth the price of admission. Trick R' Treat was a great end, and there were other moments in between that added to the night. Certainly Farewell Uncle Tom was an experience that I'll never forget.

I see the overall festival as a 24 hour cram session on film. We get an opportunity to see many of the high points through the history of cinema, and a few of the low points. If that doesn't float your boat then we'll have one less person competing for the prized slots in next year.

    by shiftyeyeddog2

pathetic. we already knew they bought off Paramount and Dreamworks, we knew Harry was their shill, and now they give out hundreds of free players in exchange for getting to do a whole sales pitch to a captive audience. Pathetic. I guess it was only a matter of time until BNAT became outright corporate sponsored, as opposed to them donating "promotional gifts" for the goodie bags

    Taking nothing from BNAT 9

    by mel gibsteinberg

But you know how I know this year was a bit dissapointing? Because it's already late Monday, and there has been silence from everyone at the site. In years past, the writers couldn't wait to comment on what they saw, like the year they had Return of the King and Passion, the site was a buzz with positive feedback and stories of a mindblowing event. But give Harry credit, a lesser mortal would have said "Damn! Can't top that, guess I should just roll out on a high note and stop doing these." But at least he tries.

    by hippolyta

The line-up did need a little more action or comedy, and a lot less misogyny. It was obvious something was wrong since the BNAT lineup is always like a carefully planned mix-tape. When a studio pulls a film at the last minute there's not much that can be done. I still enjoyed the whole experience as usual and I know that no one can understand that but my fellow BNATers.

two of the 5 I talked to were from Austin, and they got everything. The two guys who waited in the lobby for 12 hours were from LA and had to sit on the stairs the whole time (and did so happily). They got a gift bag, but no HD-DVD player

my bag has a lot of stuff I could really live without (books and blah looking DVDs). The few movie things I got were a I AM LEGEND medical bracelet, a key for THE ORPHANAGE, and a kite for some kite movie. I also got some pliable cuffs for Grand Theft Auto. The guy next to me got a hat. The food tie-ins were my favorite. During Sweeny Todd they brought out lil' meat pies and during trick 'r treat sack o' candy!

You're entitled to your opinion, but what self respecting film geek wouldn't want to see Sturges, Fuller and Vincent on the big screen; Goodbye Uncle Tom is pretty legendary among the "so-bad-it's-good" crowd; and the new movies (minus Poughkeepsie Tapes which was awful) were all home runs. Really, when full reviews start coming in, you will read the same thing over and over, "great lineup until Poughkeepsie Tapes".

It's Monday night folks, and still no report back from BNAT 9? Hmmmm? What could be the reason? Could it be dissapointment, frustration, the AICN team heading out on a peyote fueled road trip to escape what they just had to experience? No, I am sure it wasn't really like that. But I do wonder if there is just a legitimate feeling of 'sigh' not quite good enough, to make the writers feel like posting right now just isn't worth it. I'll tell you one thing, if the first thing we here from Harry is some apoligist bullshit like "You know for me, this BNAT in many ways was my favorite, for blah...blah...blah" then you will know this site has gone into full on coverup mode.

    Son of Rambow

    by bob loblaw law blog

Just got back from the post-BNAT SoR screener at the Alamo South Lamar. Great film with lots of hilarious moments and loads to love for fellow geeks who grew up in the 80s.

As for someone who asked about Portland, I believe my wife and I were the only ones from Oregon... but we were on the list. Still, I feel for those who did come standby... I think they had a great time, as did pretty much everyone.

Sure, it would've been cool to see some more exclusive, unreleased stuff, but it hardly made a difference. The atmosphere, the people, the food, the caffeine, the vintage trailers, the awesome new films (Sweeney Todd, Mongol, Charlie Wilson's War), the crazy classics (The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Great McGinty, etc.) and the downright weird (Teen Lust and Farewell, Uncle Tom) made the event for me. I'm definitely hoping for a return trip soon.

Even the worst film -- The Poughkeepsie Tapes -- was interesting enough, if only to see how people react to a move that seems to have zero value (and by seems, I mean, "doesn't have").
Tonite, Harry said Rambo was supposed to close out BNAT, but Sly said the Romanian effects company hadn't turned in more than 100 effects. So, a no go. It would have been cool to follow the new Rambo with Son of Rambow. Oh well.

Cheers to all those who made it in and came... and enjoyed. I hope those of you who would have loved it get the chance to go sometime soon.
Those of you who badmouth or throw insults at those who came -- especially the guys who came in hopes of snagging a standby seat -- probably aren't the right crowd for BNAT anyway. It's a helluva fun, albeit crazy, weird party, through and through... and I loved every minute of it.

*heh* Do folks really reload the site all day looking for BNAT9 stuff to update on the main page so they can start blathering in each one of those posts too? With every refresh is disappointment, so they're keeping this open in the background and posting here instead. I guess it's a way to kill time or something.

Every year since BNAT5, basically, a few kids that have discovered the site waste their time wailing about the "weak lineup" compared to "last year".

BNAT9 was great. Many of us who go mostly look forward to the old stuff anyway, so this year was particularly good for us with the inclusion of a Kirk Douglas classic with b&w widescreen and Dr. Phibes with a new print. Of course, we also paid dearly when Farewell Uncle Tom hit the screen.

Trick r' Treat was a big surprise because I'd never really heard of it, and it turned out to be a fun little love letter to the holiday of Halloween, in they way that a love letter to that particular holiday should be written.
Charlie Wilson's War was definitely one I was dreading but ending up being pleasantly surprised by in some ways and unhappy about the heavy handedness of it in many other ways.
Teen Lust - a.k.a. as "Rapetown, USA - THE COMEDY!" Man. What was wrong with people in the 70s? Ditto for Farewell Uncle Tom.
So, premiers were fun and fine, but the old stuff was really the fun stuff this year for me, as it often is in the years I get to come. I probably would have never heard of The Mutations (a.k.a. The Freakmaker) without BNAT6.
