Josh Brolin joins Sean Penn in MILK!

Published at:  Dec 05, 2007 5:34:20 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The trades had a story today regarding Josh Brolin's next flick. It's about damn time Brolin is getting his dues as an actor. He's on an incredible kick right now, especially his fantastic understated work in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

He's just signed on to be the co-star of MILK, the Gus Van Sant biopic of the assassinated gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Sean Penn is playing Milk and Brolin will be Dan White, the San Francisco county supervisor who murdered Milk and San Fran Mayor George Moscone.

You might remember there's a competing Milk biopic project (like CAPOTE and INFAMOUS) to be directed by Bryan Singer with a script by Chris McQuarrie. That's exciting to me, to see those two work together again (that's why I can't wait for VALKYRIE), but word is McQuarrie didn't get his draft turned in before the strike, so I'd guess that one might not happen since MILK is going forward to strongly.

What do you folks think?

No, really, I mean he's actually gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    it was the twinkie case

    by troutpencil

I have always been irritated by the love for this Milk guy, because of the riots after he was killed by the gay community, because they tried to slant it like the twinkie asshole killed him because he was gay, when his orientation didn't matter. The tragedy is generic, he doesn't qualify as a martyr for the gay cause. And I don't like Gus Van Sant, but Sean Penn and Josh Brolin amounts to an impressive cast I think and I want to see it. I never thought I'd want to see a Harvey Milk movie.

I'd Rather See a Movie About Dan White

    by grungies

We have a million bio-pics out, even though having two by great directors like Van Sant and Singer sounds fascinating.

But I'm more interested in the concept of this all-American boy turning murderer sounds like a far more interesting film than just any old biopic. I mean, the guy practically gets off for murder, and then commits suicide. It's the real world Crime & Punishment.

    Sean Penn is horribly miscast

    by live.

This is casting for "coolness" and not fitness for the part. I hate this Hollywood thinking and thought Van Sant was better than this.

    by live.

Van Sant >>(x 100)>>> Singer, so I'm glad it's his movie that is getting made.

But Sean Penn is still horribly miscast.

    It took...

    by american mythos

...Josh Brolin getting cast for MILK to even make AICN? Milk was an important figure in American history, yet most people don't even know he existed. I'm 22 and I know all about the friggin' guy. And as for Singer, I knew Mayor of Castro Street (his competing project) would never see the light of day when I saw that he was attached. Singer is the most non-committal mofo when it comes to movie projects. He'll hold them down for years before moving on to something new.

    by dauphin534

it's one of the most compelling documentaries i have ever seen. that story is just so gripping. and the fact that they got an actor like brolin to play Dan White means they aren't just making a standard biopic about Milk. this will definitely be partially about White and what made him tick as well.

It starred Tim Daily, and even his sister Tyne Daily was in it.

Quint, you're being a bit liberal using the term "assassinated" here. The two were killed, or murdered; but assassinated?

Why is it wrong to say two prominent political figures were assassinated, especially if they were killed specifically for their politics/beliefs?
