Early Test Screening Look At Demi Moore's PASSION OF MIND

Published at:  Apr 26, 1999 4:28:27 AM CDT

Since her breakup with Bruce, we haven't heard too much out of Demi Moore, hell... even before that. Once on top of the Hollywood Female Star Status.... She has since fallen film after flop after flop back down to Tierra Firma.... Will this be the film to begin her ascent once again... Or another nail in a career coffin? Keep in mind this is an early screening with all the problems that are mentioned in the First Paragraph, so realize this is a temporary TEST print of the film. Here we go...

PASSION OF MIND

I recently finagled my way into a test screening of Demi Moore's first
film in two
years, tentatively titled "Passion of Mind."

Before the screening, the host announced that what we would be seeing
was a
working print and featured temporary music and some color abnormalities,

but otherwise it seemed to be finished.

The film stars Demi as Marie/Marty, a woman who seems to be leading a
double
life, one in New York City as a high-powered professional and one in
France as
a book reviewer and mother of two daughters. Echos of Gwyneth Paltrow's

"Sliding Doors" can be found throughout this film, except Marty/Marie
actually
realizes that she is leading a double life and is trying to figure out
which one is real.
When she goes to sleep in New York City, she wakes up in Paris, and
vice versa. She has therapists in both places, who each try to convince
her that the
other is a dream. She can't figure out which one is real and which one
is the dream
because both seem so real to her. The best line in the movie comes when
a
therapist tries to convince her that the world he is definitely real and
she
replies, "That's what they all say."

It's not surprising that Demi was attracted to this film since it is
mostly a romance with
supernatural overtones, hinting of "Ghost." But I think this film may
be too bizarre
and slowly paced to be a hit. I know some people just hate Demi Moore,
but I
have liked her in certain things such as "Disclosure" and "G. I. Jane."
This is a fairly
challenging role for her, but she doesn't really make much of an
impression.

Demi has a romance in each world, the one in France with Stellan
Skarsgaard and
the one in New York City with William Fichtner. While not exactly lust
objects,
these guys provide the best moments in the movie with their wooing of
Marie/Marty.
Let's just say, pretty soon Demi is getting laid on both sides of the
globe (lots of
love scenes, but no nudity this time--sorry, fellas).

The biggest problem with the movie, besides the slow pace, is the
feeling we get
toward Demi's character. As the movie progresses, her condition gets
less and
less cute and it becomes obvious that the woman has to be, if not
insane, at least
profoundly disturbed. Then we come to the confusing and bizarre ending.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

At the end, Marty realizes that the life in France was a dream. Her two
girls are
actually younger versions of herself (don't ask me) and a confidante and
friend played
by Sinead Cusack turns out to be her dead mother (!) At one point, Demi
mentions
that her husband had died (she is a single mom) and that storyline is
sort of dropped
or perhaps Stellan Skarsgaard's character is her dead husband, too . .
.? Who knows.
I sure didn't. You're left with not really knowing what extreme thing
could have
caused her to form this dream world. And if it's just her mother dying
twenty-five
years ago, that's not enough. The movie ends with Marty (her real New
York self)
visiting her Paris home (apparently her childhood home) which now
appears to be
owned by other people.

All in all, the movie is going to need some major work if it wants to
draw in audiences.

first! and a coupla things about demi moore

    by moviemaniac

well, i never considered Demi Moore as much of an actress, but perhaps she has performed well in this movie. Bizzare movies like this one don't work out and movies with even slightly strange or bizzare endings don't draw in a crowd, no matter how good it is. (Yes! I liked Devil's Advocate..)
I agree with N.Onymous, they do need to give the flick some sorta solid ending to make it work.

I have no sympathy for these so called "movie stars" who think of nothing but concepts for themselves as grabbing as many magazine covers as possible then their career dies faster than a wop in a bar in Belfast when it becomes apparant they actually don't have any talent, unless you consider getting rid of stretch marks and changing your bra size from B to DD "talent".

    Demi Moore

    by 60091

I remember years back seeing GHOST with my girlfriend. A pretty good "date" movie. Thats where Demi Moore was at her finest "acting-wise" that is. I really believed the emotions she was expressing thru that character. My girlfriend was in tears at the end of the movie. Thanks to Demi, we ended up having great sex just to console each other.(God I miss those days). Anyway my point is this: She was more interesting with her clothes on. I say actresses who reveal "nothing" are way more interesting than those who show everything.

    Not AGAIN!

    by dolfanar

This sounds like a remake of the french film "La double vie de veronique". In the french film, the cities are Paris and Poland. The movie is in French (for the Paris scenes) and in Polish (For the Polish scenes). Why do I have a feeling that in this Movie the French will miraculously be speaking English (possibly with a bad accent), don't want to confuse people with lengthy subtitles do we? When will Hollywood learn that it's glossy, cheezy style DOES NOT work with interesting and quirky foreign films? Anyway I recommend "La Double Vie de Veronique", although if you've ONLY been exposed to US Hollywood films, you MAY find it a little slow (and the ending WAY too ambiguous for you)...

A better actress for this movie would be......

    by me2

.....Asia Carrera. She's a far more talented actress than Demi Moore. Plus Asia is a lot smarter, she can play piano, and she has lots of film experience not just acting but also doing work such as editing and writing. She should be a true star, not Demi, whose only career achievement was knowing which studio executives to give head to.

Asia rules, but none of you probably even know who she is because you're too busy watching rehashed trash like the matrix when you could be watching a real actress like Asia in great movies like Appassionata. But then, that film doesn't have any guns or explosions, instead it is a peroid piece with a great script. How 'boring' it must seem to you.

And instead of seeing her destined to be great Snow Leopard movie, you all be watching george revisionist lucas trashing the greatest film trilogy with horrible ideas in the new film. Did you know that in Phantom Menace he's going to have Midi-Chlorians be in a persons blood, and the amount that they have determines their potential with the force! HELLOOOOO, the force was always something spiritual, now lucas is going to make it something that is determined by a person's genetics! Plus he's going to have anakin make c-3po! And of course c-3po, for the rest of time, never even realizes this??!!?!! And did anyone notice in the second trailer when obi-wan and darth maul were dueling when they keep wacking away at each other and then seperate so that they can strike a ridiculous pose? What in god's name was that? I mean come on, in the original trilogy they had poster/lunch box cover moments, but this was ridiculous and hurts the movie! Not to mention the other shot that showed obi-wan doing a van dummy jumping splits kick! What was up with that? He's a jedi! He's supposed to be regal, and very samuraii like, not like jackie chan(who is cool but is no samuraii). And then, this whole conflict has the good guys fighting robots, not humans, not aliens, but friggin droids, and they all look exactly the same! I know george can be cheap but doing this copy and paste routine just so he can have a bunch of bad guys on screen is terrible! And all it takes is anakin firing some torpedos into a mothership causing it to blow up and all the robots flying in space and on the ground basically stop dead in their tracks? Laaaame! And I won't even go into Jar Jar and his whole "Look at me! I'm computer generated, aren't I the greatest? *giggle*" aspect.
    Barf.
So go, go watch bad actress's like demi moore, rehashed films like the matrix, and a trashing of the greatest trilogy of film ever made. Me and my friends will go watch real artists like Asia making great films that don't suck.
P.S. You people will act all surprised when Phantom Menace comes out and sucks, but remember, lucas, the revisionist from hell, made greedo shoot first, and if that wasn't warning enough about how he was going to screw things up, then you truly are a bunch of morons.

i was never a big fan of Demi but to me this movie seems ok. as it was mentioned it was the early draft, they still might cut and add something.
and to that dude with a HUGE problem with SW. 1st why on a earth did you bring SW in a demi chat(or responce book, whatever)? it seems you take episode#1 as a personal insult from Lucasfilm. 2nd who the heck is Asia something? i never heared of her...
3rd matrix doesn't suck and if you have a problem and a low level of imagination to watch si-fi movies, do us all a favor and rent titanic( but oops they still have FX)

    REMAKE

    by captblood

Yes, this is a remake of the Polish/French film described fairly well by the previous poster The Double Life of Veronique (US Release Title). It was directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, the same director as the Three Colors Series (Blue, White & Red), where most of us were first introduced to the babalicious Julie Delpy. I remember Demi buying the rights to this a while back and wondering what she planned on doing with them. Oh well, now I know. The main problem I have with a Demi remake is that the original star, Irene Jacob (who won Best Actress at Cannes for her performance), was both extremely sensual and very confused. The word that comes to mind when I think about both her and her performance is "soft". I don't mean in a bad way, either. It's just that her chacter was a female type we don't see much in American cinema; she wasn't a vamp; she wasn't a bitch; she wasn't tragic; she was fairly normal. I can't see Demi pulling that off. For that matter, I can't see American audiences showing up in any way what-so-ever, if they've kept as much of the structure intact as it seems they have. The fact that Demi does no nudity in this is a bit odd, too. The original certainly had it's share, and for once (for Demi), it could be non-exploitive and tastefully done.

    VERONIQUE/VERONIKA = TRUE IMAGE

    by methos

NOT DEMI! I've been AWOL for awhile, but I cant't resist this. The very idea of remaking "La Double vie de Veronique" with Demi Moore is so ludicrous that it's hard to believe it didn't come out of the void that is Jon Peters' mind. No, it must have come from Demi herself. Peters' couldn't be that moronic. What's next? A remake of "Decalogue" scaled down into 90 minutes?
Man, I'm looking at my british quad poster for "Three Colours: RED" that hangs above my computer for divine inspiration and as watchdog for shite movies like this Demi vehicle. I hope Ally Sheedy is out there somewhere laughing hysterically. It was all worth it.
As far as I'm concerned, Irene Jacob has more talent and acting ability in a single fingernail than Demi Moore. She's all natural. She's totally cool, too. Saw her when she was filming her stint in Chicago for "U.S. Marshals" in '97. I hope Irene Jacob takes one look at Demi, and we'll all witness Demi Moore's head explode ala "Scanners."

I hate Demi Moore as much as the next person but I can't wait to see this movie because 2 of the hottest talented guys are it. The second Stellan Skarsgard and William Fichtner get on the screen I will be a happy little monkey - screw Demi.
