Whoa! New Joker and Batman promo pics from THE DARK KNIGHT!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've been swabbing the deck of the Orca getting ready for the BNAT visitors. In my latest break I found a nice little email in the inbox from the guy who runs a Spanish Language site called Uruloki. It seems he has found himself some awesome promo images for THE DARK KNIGHT. But the owner of Uruloki has asked us to send y'all to these FLICKER sites: Pics Removed By Request of Warner Legal Dept. - so thanks to Felipe of Uruloki!!! The Batman image isn't all that amazing. Sure, Bale looks great, but it's definitely not as new as seeing Heath Ledger's Joker. I gotta say... it's a departure, but one I'm starting to really dig. Add on to that the huge amount of trust I have in Christopher Nolan and you get one giddy seaman. Okay, back to making the homestead presentable. Enjoy the pics below and click on any of the images to visit Uruloki.

    "Love that Joker"

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

Batman still looks a little robocop-ish but I do like the grey in the costume.

Batman looks lame. What next? Robin returns?

    Batman Begins is overrated

    by Amadeo Zeller

In my opinion, it was kinda boring and Christian Bale overly dramatic reading as The Batman, with that cheesy whispering was silly...And the last half hour completely falls apart.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:05 a.m. CST

I don't understand the thrill of Batman pictures

    by Bobo_Vision

Actors wearing make-up or the bat costume. So what? The best thing about the new Batman series is the story, acting, and directing. So I will always find photos underwhelming. And Ledger is extremely overrated as an actor, so I hope he can pull this off.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:07 a.m. CST

    All good stuff!

    by IAmMrMonkey!

I have no problems with these pictures at all. Ledger looks fine there and i'm sure Batman's costume will look great when it's set against the darkness of Gotham.<p>Bring on The Dark Knight and fuck off to the haters!

    So between Nolan and Burton...

    by greenstyle92

How did the Nolan Joker end up being the more Goth-inspired one? Who're they trying to impress? lame-os who are always bragging about how cool horror movies are?

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:13 a.m. CST

Ok, I was wrong about the armor.

    by I Dunno

When the first pics came out I defended the armor but I was wrong. It's totally gay. Well, not Schumacker-gay but gay.

Over-the-top joker has been done to death...

    by SantiagoAtez

...I was hoping for just a normal psychopath (pardon the oxymoron) without all the bright colors.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:14 a.m. CST

    Okay, about the Bat outfit

    by malificus

It's just too much. See that lighter grey tone on half the chest plate? The whole outfit should be that color, with black accent, like te cowel, cape, gloves, boots. Get rid of all the little plates and straps and simply have the outfit be that grey mesh you can see under all the stupid straps and plates, which obviously make it hard for bats to move! Light copper belt also looks like shite, should be dark copper, like a penny. SIMPLIFY!! Joker looks perfect.

Never understood the bright gold belt

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

Didn't they get rid of the yellow oval on his chest becauze it wasn't very stealthy? So why keep the belt some bright color? It's like he wants bad guys to shoot at his crotch or something.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:19 a.m. CST

    I agree, TruPhan...

    by tiredpm

...the white background (and full lighting) is lethal for that kind of promo pic. Especially the Batman shot, it just looks awful.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:19 a.m. CST

    White background

    by Harold The Great

That's amazingly stupid. Great costumes and make up, and then some moron just slaps them on a white background.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:22 a.m. CST

I'm tired of sequels and redos and unoriginality.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:28 a.m. CST

    by MartinX

The flat lighting in these shots isn't flattering to either costume, but my pseudo-movie-vision can see how they'll look infinitely better under grim, grimy, Gotham lighting. I must say, these are the worst shots of the Joker I've seen, and I've loved everything so far, in the one where he's holding up the cards he looks like he's wearing bad old school theater "aging effect" greasepaint, rather than psycho-clown-from-hell paint.

It's all about performance and cinematography.

    by Dokkalvar

The Batman suit has always looked like crap, even end game or whatever that cheesy Batman short was called, but it's always been digestible with the right amount of shadow. I think the Joker doesn't look that great, but if his character is more like Kakihara from Ichi the Killer then we're all likely to buy the look.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:33 a.m. CST

    by DerLanghaarige

    Great idea:

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:34 a.m. CST

It looked terrible in the new BTS video with Al Roaker but the suit itself looks much better for some reason in these pics. Probably the angle..... In the video it looked like Bats had a large alien head. <p> I'm trying not to judge the suit till I see it in the context of the film but so far I'm 50/50 on it.... <p> Joker looks great.. People need to remember that Nolan is playing up the psychopath joker. This Joker would make 89' joker cream his little panties!

I like Heath as Joker. He's schluppy. He's got kind of a degenerate slacker vibe about him. Unlike Nicholson who played Joker like some kind of wealthy gadfly eccentric.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 8:44 a.m. CST

    by Keith Maniac

I'm really happy with the direction they've taken here with the Joker. All the colours and sartorial elements are on the nose, yet the disfigurement is a little bit more in the real world.

Ledger's Joker still looks like crap.

    by TheGhostWhoLurks

The guy looks like the elderly Joker from Dark Knight Returns... DRUNK!<p>Sorry, but you can't put badly-bleeding clown makeup on a mediocre, balding actor and get The Joker. This is one casting mistake that can't be fixed, simply by having blind "faith in Nolan." I have faith in my ability to smell crap when someone tries to tell me it's filet mignon.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 9:04 a.m. CST

The Batsuit looks like it was designed by

    by I Dunno

a Hollywood costume designer. A gay Hollywood costume designer. Okay, that was redundant. But really, under what circumstances would Bruce Wayne design something like that? The Batsuit is for stealth and to intimidate criminals, not to make them think he's fabulous. And the bright yellow belt is stupid, unless he wants to get shot in the junk.

    by rbatty024

One of my most anticipated of 08. Ledger looks more interesting as the Joker with each new picture, and the armored batsuit is a pretty kick ass idea.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 9:26 a.m. CST

So is the Joker's smile cut or isn't it?

    by I Dunno

The very first picture they released it's obviously cut but in most of the others is just looks like makeup.

    Batman Ends

    by Mace Hindu

Really, could someone just have ended this series before it started. Batmen Ends was a TERRIBLE film. Christian Bale IS the weakest Batman EVER and the story and villains were pethetic and laughable. Oh and if I misspelled anything above let me know. Thanks. **shakes head at computer screen in dissapointment at all of you for liking Batman, turns computer off and fires up a bowl to forget about it.**

It's nothing like that Batman and Robin shite suit

    by KillaKane

The pictures are brightly light for clarity and detail, I love all that maesh and kevlar plating and the Judge Dredd style buzzknux, it's design by function and not that far removed from the last film - it's all in the lighting people, he's going too be saturated in blacks and shadows onscreen. Ok I'll concede the belt appears goldenly gay in that photo, and yeah it's not anodised matt black for a reason, mainly due to it being heldback from the comic/graphs, but it was intended to be a lighter more reflective colour so that old Bats could access his kit in the dark a bit more readily. Think about it, if he's all cowelled up and ready to break out the bat thermos during a nocturnal stake-out he couldn't see shit downstairs if it were an all black ensemble! The belt colour contrast enables him to look down and get a grip on whatever he needs! On film it'll look like a dark worn gold and less gay. A plain old rubber suit with sculpted musculature just does'nt have enough detail to translate to the screen, it's a similar rationale that's applied to designing a NPCs in next gen games, the clarity in design and execution of the texture/bump mapping etc brings out more detail, definition and enhances the sense of realism. It's more akin to Solid Snake and the US Military Stealth Suits that are no longer fictional design folly but practical 21st Century TAC Armor.

    Disappointed with Batman costume.

    by Buckys_Kick_Ass_Arm

It's not scary. He doesn't look creepy, scary or intimidating. He looks like a secret soldier dressed with a bat helmet. Joker's fine.

    by JDanielP

I can hardly wait... for that "IRON MAN" flick.

  • Dec. 2, 2007, 9:40 a.m. CST

Of course the outfit is impractical...

    by malificus

.. and I'm not advocating changing the basics at all. This is early Bat Man, Year One-style so in the interest of reasonable comic book accuracy the outfit should be grey with black, not bitch-whining about stupid little details or complaining just to complain, all the straps and buckles little plates are too damn much, although I do reaize that once they make the set dark as hell and get someone who's clueless about shooting action, which most photogs are, it will all be a black, indecipherable blur anyway and won't matter. Everything in the costume could be made logical if he used them for a specific purpose or simplified them somewhat. The cape doesn't need to be 12 feet long like in the comic, what works visually on the comic page wouldn't necessarily in a movie. Wasn't it the comic that had weights in the pointy tips of the cape and he used them to whip perps in the puss? I'd like to see a smaller cowel with stubby, drawn-back ears like in the really early days, like what you see with The Bat Man cartoon. Check out Bat Man Year One and you can see exactly what the outfit should look like, Mazzuchelli's(sp?) even drawn the wrinkles where they'll be, light, airy, functional and cool as hell. Point to the comic and tell the costume guy: "I want THIS, or you're fired." and watch the good things happen.

    The armor

    by Omar B

    Armour is overdesigned

    by Mistahtibbs

I'm pretty sure this film is going to rock our worlds. Love the look of the Joker. Very...sick. However the Batman armour is overdesigned. Like they felt the need to put all sorts of straps and buckles and armour plates. Almost like they were planning the toy design instead. It just seems...impractical. Certainly for someone as damaged as Batman is. Anyway, still gonna love this, sight unseen.

    by ThePilgrim

It was boring, and the villain's a fag. The Director's probably one too. Don't understand why Liam did the film. They must have paid him well to do that piece of shit! The voice modding Bale did as Batman made him laugh. Wisdom in age I tell ya! Looks like 2 is much of the same.

Bale is about 25-30 lbs. less muscular

    by picardsucks

suit looks baggy on him. One of the things that really worked in the first film is that Bale really looked like Batman in demenor and more importantly bodytype. He was muscular and lean now he is just lean skinny Batman in muscle suit doesn't work for me. I hope it does well I am not a hater i loved the first one but Bale should have gotten the "assistance" he used on the first one to grow back his Batman muscles. You know "personal trainers" like the "personal trainers" the cast of 300 and the WWE uses.

In Truth, My Pops's good people, loved by many, hated by very few. He has tons of black friends and is dating a few black chicks at the moment. The metro shit, too him means- The guy would rather jerk off while looking in a mirror- or he's half way out and just one dick away from being a queer. My Pop's finds overly feminine gay people annoying- Kinda like how Han is annoyed by C3PO. So, yeah I guess my Dad doesn't like guys who bugger. So what! At least he honest and brave enough to say so. He'll say it to your face on national Television! He doesn't like pedophiles either- Says they are diseased soulless creatures. He doesn't care that gays what to be gay, but one thing he doesn't like is that they wanna make it an issue straights have to back them up on. I can see him saying something along the lines of. "Gay, straight. I don't give a fuck. So as you don't push it in my face. I don't make who I fuck your issue, or your business. I don't wear it like a merit badge, nor does my sexual activities change how I present myself among others. Meaning I don't talk with a lisp or act like a giddy constipated chick. At least the closeted ones act like men"--------- Pretty sure he'd say something along those lines.

    by RobinP

Uh...why change it from the one they had last time. Okay, maybe it's got something to do with the plot...but I just hope they're not going the "we've got to have X number of different suits so we can sell Y number of action figures" route to pander to the kiddie crowd. Seriously, that suit look a hell of a lot like the "batsuit with sonar modifications" Val Kilmer wore when attacking the Riddler/Two Face base in "Forever" and we all know that's NOT the way to go here.... Joker looks amazing though.

    by axelfoley

Will we be seeing those duds in Target at a suggested $130 retail? I did like Batman Begins, it resuscitated Batman on the big screen and was a score for DC in their attempts at rivaling Marvel's film adaptations. I get that. But is it a written code that in every fucking superhero film sequel there flat out HAS to be changes to the lead's costume? I say this because Batman looks like Schumacher was brought back on board as an advisor. I agree with the poster who said it looks like they're trying to sell toys. That's basically the reason they do that with comic movies anyway; to cash in on kids wanting the upgraded action figure. This movie and Watchmen--should the Dawn of the Dead guy not fuck up--which im sure he will--will definitely be two more scores for DC. And no im not keeping fucking score in a notebook, im just a movie guy who read comics as a kid and "gets into this shit".

I'm still not a huge fan of the new bat cowl. "Begins" had a bigger neck for the mask, and with this new mask, the neck substance is completely gone. I believe it was Bale himself who, back in "Begins" said he liked the costume, because it was big, and made him look like a "panther." The new suit leaves the shoulder-neck area lookingly rather gangily and young, like a halloween costume. Oh well, still badass. Just hope they can cover it up with darker lighting or something.

was batman begins THAT good? I found it to be awesome the first 2 times but afterwards I cannot stand to watch the whole movie again. They played it safe and Nolan didn't really take any risks with the film. Christian Bale, though good, was really too "cheesy" most of the time, too much heroics and not enough self doubt. The final battle was not that interesting, asides from a few action scenes. I'll still watch TDK the day that it opens, but I really don't like the way the suit looks... it's too cyborg like, should be made darker, all in one really black tone.

Why is anyone expecting anything different. Maybe Miller's JLA Bat'z will be closer to the comic book look. I get what Nolan's trying to do, but the overall look is very ugly. The masks looked better in the first 2 Burton flicks. The suit in Nolan's has too much stuff going on, and it looks very poorly made. Nomex is sewn in under the fabric but this make believe armor stuff sits on top of it. It looks fucking ugly.

I understand he is comfortable but he is not scary. Comfort should come second to being scary. Its the reason he is a bat to begin with. The HAHAHAtimes also has 'i survived' marked by the water ad...i have a feeling the joker survived a trip through this water facility? coloring his hair and fucking up his skin a bit (because even out of makeup, his skin looks fucked in pics- his hands and fingers are pink/purple and scabby looking.

Seriously, there is a big difference between being a psychopathic, deformed criminal kingpin who likes to dress up like a demented jester and runs a gang and an all-and-out drunk leper like they're going for here in these pics. Most serial killers like Jeffrey Dalmer and Manson looked out to lunch, but they weren't rotting per se. Joker has to be mentally capable of running a complex criminal element in one of the hardest-knock cities in the country. The guy can afford proper green dye for his hair and proper white paint for his face. I don't care if it fades later on, but we haven't seen a starter pic for Joker and I doubt there is one. On the otherhand, Batman looks too much like the goddamn Punisher or something - he's like a Blackwater mercenary or something. If anything, I think Batman should look a little scarier this go round (it is the DARK KNIGHT afterall) and the Joker should look a little more professional. It's fine to be crazy as fuck, but you can connote that via facial expression and behaviour, not by making the costume as ragged as possible. To me, Batman has always been a ninja-type avenger, not some shit out of Project Grizzly, if you catch my drift. When I see Batman, all I think about is the "architecture" of his suit - I don't get any "holy shit, this guy is dressed as a bat and might be nuts" vibe that I was hoping they were going for here. Say what you will about Tim Burton's version, but Nolan is relying too heavily on Burton's Batman instead of making his own. In my opinion, going against the Joker always make Batman lose his mind a little - he has to get on that mind plane to compete and conquer. This costume is designed so that he can within hardcore gun fire and a grenade. Just because Bruce Wayne is a gazillionaire doesn't mean the guy has to be suped up like a goddamn action-figure. The whole point of Batman is that Wayne's is a little nuts and uses Batman to channel his demons while doing good. Back to Ledger, I just don't feel like the guy is a crime boss here. He's losing his hair and he's got forehead wrinkling and he looks like he slept in a trashcan. Compared to the villians in Begins, he doesn't seem together enough to be a viable adversary.

Where Nolan is fucking up with the Joker is in his misunderstanding of the character - borrowing from the two incarnations of Joker in the comic. Originally, Joker was a deranged serial murderer that would fall more in line with Heath's depiction and costume thus far. Where the problem lies, is that we've already seen pictures of the heist using Joker's henchmen in the film, and thus it is clear that the Joker in TDK will be the crazed criminal kingpin who plans complex operations and has plenty of men at his disposal. Here is the PROBLEM: You've got to choose one or the other, you can't mix and match and say: Well our Joker is both a mentally fucked serial killer and a badass mafia-like kingpin of Gotham and Batman's most fierce chess-like adversary. That's impossible. No leper (as Michael Caine has referred to the Joker/Heath in TDK) can run a mob-like organization. But Nolan is so obsessed with his "dark" take that he does it anyway. A PG-13 film can't show a rotting serial killer dressed up like a clown, so Nolan compromised and made him a rotting crime leader. It doesn't make sense, judging from the pics and plot we've seen and heard.

They hate them so much that on weekends they drive around in their pick up truck looking for guys wearing brightly coloured clothing or gel in their hair, and then they hold them down and fuck them in the ass to teach them a lesson while yelling, "Take that you faggots!" <p> They specifically hate good looking men for trying to turn people gay with their beguiling beauty, so they rape them whenever they teach them a lesson as well. <p> When they're not doing that, they are online bitching about men's fashion and costume design...for being too gay.

Ha. Okay, so in your opinion there is no such thing as a "great Joker" and a "mediocre Joker" because the director rules all and we must accept whatever he dishes out. That's obnoxious and pretty much against the entire premise of this website. How many rants and arguments have you seen on AICN for everything from Michael Myers to fucking Alvin and the Chipmunks? There is a correct/awesome way to do a character and then there is a way to do it that involves not fully grasping the source material/movie logic. In my opinion, Nolan is mixing the two best known incarnations of the Joker into one entity/costume, and I am explaining that this doesn't work. I have no doubt that TDK will be successful, and of course, I wouldn't write all of this if I didn't plan to see it. What would be the point of that? However, I see Nolan tweaking a character for his own vision in a way that will ultimately be a letdown to the potential he set with Batman Begins. The Joker should have the entire Web going apeshit with excitement. Instead, even sites like JoBlo are surprisingly skeptical about the pics we've seen thus far. There is a reason for this. Nolan's JOKER SIMPLY FEELS OFF AND STYLISTICALLY ASKEW.

TheDohDoh, Joker was always a goofball

by Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World

I love how people talk about how originally, Joker was some deranged serial killer that would make Hannibal Lecter need a night light to sleep or whatever and why can't these inferior directors live up to the Jokers TRUE character, but really, it's all bullshit. You, my friends, are seeing these comics through some glasses that I think might be tinted uh, a rose color if I had to guess. He's a fucking comic book character, much less one for the 30s or 40s or whenever, Yeah, in the beginning he killed people, then in the 70s tonned him down for awhile, but even when he was killing people he was a goofball. Because that's what comics are, fucking goofy, anything better from back then and it's your imagination. I remember when I finally got around to reading the much hyped Death in the Family storyline, and it's just some goofy bullshit with Robin getting killed in Saudia Arabia or some shit and Joker becoming an ambassador to the UN. Fucking Stupid. Batman has always been an awesome character/idea and a shitty comic.

    About "The Definitive Batman"...

    by rbatty024

There is no definitive Batman character. Take a look at the comics and you'll see how much the character has changed over the years. This isn't a bad thing. it is because Batman is malleable that he has lasted for seventy years. If he didn't change they he wouldn't be around. <p> There are some core elements to Batman's character (the death of his parents, ideas of vengeance, his aristocracy, etc.) and it is how each writer handles these core elements that makes the character. I like it when writers/directors take wildly different approach because it can show us a different side of the Batman character.<p> Having the killer of Batman's parents caught brought a whole new dimension of Bruce Wayne, which we have not seen before in film. I liked the Burton films but they were Burton's Batman as much as these are Nolan's Batman. They are not definitive and once you expect the final word on Batman you will immediately be disappointed. My personal favorite version of Batman is the Dini/Timm animated series, but I know that I'll always have that and I don't expect a movie to fulfill those preconceived notions.

Nolan is mining in the mother load here. This is The Batman that I’ve always wanted. Now there are two psychopaths in Gotham – one dressed as a bat who wants to make things right and one the personification of comedy being tragedy. Nolan and Ledger will make the most frightening sociopath that Batman has ever faced come to life on the screen and I for one can’t wait. I get the feeling that Alan Moore’s “Killing Joke” was one of their treasured tomes while making this film happen… just a hunch. I’m there opening day, no doubt.

The idea, given pretty explicitly in the teaser, is that the mobs of Gotham are disorganized after Falcone is sent to Arkham. They turn to The Joker (for some reason) for help...though there was also that spoiler about him holding the mobs' money until they kill Batman. Anywho, at this point the story details are fuzzy but The Joker is supposed to be exactly what you've described: demented serial murderer/kingpin of crime/nemesis of Batman. I don't see how any of those could conflict in the film. Especially if there's a transition into each.

You are correct raw_bean, and Nolan has stated that his version of the Joker is more serial killer (a la Joker in the first comics) than the "Killing Joke" deranged don. However, as we can see from the still image showing a large bank heist with goons in clown costumes/masks, Joker has a formidable crew working under him, rather than just him working solo and murdering people a la Patrick Bateman. Also, the Joker has been referred to as a leper on several occasions: at the end of the film, his skin condition is said to turn into a full-on pussy infection. This is an entirely new depiction. And personally, I don't dig it. As unhinged as Joker is, he isn't actually rotting. He should be a villian with longevity, even in Nolan's franchise and should not resemble motherfucking Darkman by the end of the film. I just disagree with Nolan's take so far, that's all. I have no problem with him being a mixture of Jokers-past, but I'm not convinced that this is a great take on the character, mainly the leprosy pisses me off. Also, there are few serial killers who run crime outfits, and in the comics Joker is rarely depicted as being both. He's usually one or the other. As for those arguing that I'm not the demographic, well I'm 20something, white, and male. That's pretty much in the demo for this film. That said, I think the negative buzz on Joker's appearance is building. Also, I think Nolan was told to spiff up the batsuit to sell toys. Look at the fucking batcycle for chrissakes. That thing is ridiculous and not practical. If Batsy jumps his batpod through that fucking waterfall guarding the batcave again, I might have to walk out.

    by performingmonkey

This is Nolan's movie, he can do what the fuck he wants. Batman's new suit is never going to be seen in that clarity in the movie. The Joker's look varies during the movie, and we won't be seeing him dancing around in front of a white background. I absolutely hate how all you cunts see these images and immediately judge the whole movie! 'Oh I can see now that it's gonna suck, the tone is just off, I hated Begins anyway!' Shut your fucking blowholes, idiots. You'll never direct a movie, let alone a Batman movie. You'll never be The Joker. You'll never get YOUR Joker onscreen (the one you masturbate over, the one who has an impossibly inhuman face that BELONGS IN A COMIC BOOK). Get a grip on your cock and jack off. Feel better? I hope so. Now make like a tree and get outta here.

Count me among the people saying these looks like shots to go on action figure packaging. But I will be counted in the "Bat bra" camp. Wouldn't he paint that suit black like he did in the first film? Of course, we've seen shots of the suit with Bruce standing by it, like in an underground bunker and it doesn't look as colorful. Have no fears, this movie will be great.

    The Bat Costume

    by jdl82

Hey, let the Bat go through some different costume stages, alright? Last time we had rubber armor, and now we have another kind of armor. Bruce is trying, arright? Besides, he wasn't the one who made it anyway; that scientist guy did. <P>The Joker costume looks fantastic, relatively speaking. He could use a haircut, though. <p>Speaking of the Joker, I have a confession to make. When the first TDK publicity site came online, I was the one who quickly made a MySpace page with that same page title as my URL and set up a Joker page. For those of you who don't remember it, it was the one that featured the song "Mr. Sandman" in the background, a red smiley face for a photo, and daily blog entries that, honestly, I had to stop writing after only a few days because they were starting to affect my personality negatively when I had difficulty separting myself from the character himself. <P> Having said that, I was amused when I later heard that Ledger was writing a Joker journal of his own to help him get into the part. However, I find myself concerned about his state of mind. I had to quit and remove the MySpace site after only about a week for the aforementioned reasons. I wonder how he's dealing with it, now after several months.

    i wondered/worried about heath's mind too

after reading what he did to 'get into the role'...but i thought it would be great if a hollywood actor were to snap because of a part in a movie.<P> to clear up about the joker 'rotting' or being a 'full on leper' by the end of the movie, well those were michael caine's exaggerated and colorful descriptions. what he actually said was once the joker puts the makeup on, he leaves it on, and throughout the course of the movie we see it degrade and bleed and run until we end up with the haggard ass looking joker that batman's beating up in those leaked pics.that's all. <P>what really has me worried is how AICN could all but totally ignore all the really cool photos and sitework for this movie, but then decide that it's these hammy publicity/toy box shots that have swayed their opinions to finally LIKING IT?<P> but, i should expect that from a site with ID4 wallpaper still tiled in the background in 2007.

Same goes for Captain America, and The Phantom. I'm sure there are others, but I don't read the silly papers. Batz has and will always be the comic book character even your Mom thinks is a closeted Homosexual. He a billionaire bitch who grew up crushing on himself. Sure he tells trusted freinds that he fell in the batcave, but the truth of the matter is this. He was looking for a secluded place to hide from Alfred so he could wack off into a mirror. They ALWAYS screw up Batman

    by Hervoyel

Seriously, Every single incarnation of Batman since the day movies and action figures came together to form the ultimate profitable symbiosis has been either totally fucked up from the moment it was conceived or well on it's way to being totally fucked up as soon as the sequel was greenlighted. The suit is always overdeveloped just like the big hardware (Batmobile, Batboat, Batplane, etc) because that's the crap they know will sell toys to rugrats. It's designed to be a toy and they change it with every version because if they don't then the kid will already have the toy and his parents won't have to buy another one. Why change the cowl when they made a point of saying in the previous film that he ordered something like 10,000 of them originally? What's Batman going to do? Scrap 9,988 of them because he thinks it would look better with ears set back a half-inch? Bruce Wayne won't be rich very long thinking like that.

As for the Joker - mute that sh!t. We know who the Joker is so don't "Howitzer" us with clown colors when one precise shot will get the job done. Again, less is more. I'm going to reserve my judgment until the movie actually comes out. In regards to Batmans suit looking "plasticky". You remember when all those pictures of the X-men outfits were shown on this site and they looked like something out of Elvira's S&M catalog. Anything that's (photographically) shot in that light, is going to look bad no matter what. Though in the movie, they looked more subdued. I'm sure, its going to be the same way in the Dark Knight. In response to the Jokers look. Listen, I've been a "die hard" Batman comic collector for a long time. Granted, Ledger doesn't look like the Joker image we all have in mind but that's okay. As long as the guy has a white face, a vicious grin from ear to ear, green hair and be a raving psychopath with a sick sense of humour, I'm fine with it.

    by WesReviews

I guess that's the kind of face we get with a "dark" and "realistic" Joker. I bet he only wears the purple suit in only one sequence, probably toward the end of the movie. Why not just go all the way, guys, and give him a complete leather suit. It made the X-Men look so hip, edgy, and "realistic".

The batsuit is lame, but so is every batsuit without a visible bat symbol. It's dark, it's is the bat symbol supposed to strike fear into the hearts of criminals if it's black like the rest of his suit. Again, LAME. It's a comic book movie, folks. We know it's a comic book movie. It won't hurt a thing to make it look just a little bit like a comic book. Jeez.

    by Abominable Snowcone

Way too busy...that's where the original movie series started going wrong. Too many lines, too many on-board accessories. You know, I'm all in favor of bringing back the iconic yellow bat logo on his chest. There was a reason Batman wore that--to encourage the bad guys to "shoot here" and let his armor absorb the impact. Batman Returns had the best suit. Just agree.

I think that the Joker's new look totally fits with Nolan's vision for a Batman universe that's grounded in realism. I think it looks terrible posed against a white background, but in the right lighting/setting, I think it will work. Just hope Ledger gets the persona right.

    Batman suit

    by templar

Listen people, it's a 30 year old guy wearing a suit that makes him look like the gimp. It doesn't matter if it looks like the original batsuit (like in the comics with some sort of material) or like in the Burton and Schoemaker flicks (a la Mr. Slave's House of Leather). Whatever the filmakers do, they will never be able to pull it off 100%. Why, because it's a comic book. But I do like how they've done the suit here. A little like the "Dark Knight returns". It'll probably look better in the film anyway

    I'm loving It!

    by crashbarbarian

The bat suit looks pratical to me considering it was originally a prototype military suit, it has to look somewhat prototype which i think it does well with the patch design, the bat symbol part looks like wayne would have had to had it made and fit it onto the suit... plus it looks more like what a futuristic soldier would wear ala halo so it feels more real to me. The joker... is amazing love the longer coat and the craziness to it... like a psycho punk genius killer... love it!

That looks like a pose we're going to see on a Taco Bell large drink cup, amirite?<p> Also, joker looks like a bad Dr. Who production. Oh that's right - They're ALL bad productions. Nevertheless, I will thumbs down yet another cartoon joker. If they were bold enough to re-invent scarecrow for the sake of 'realism' then why is the joker in a purple zoot suit and HOBO SHOES. You think he'd have time to dust off his rockports before putting them on.

A little better, but not enough...

    by Organs

Actually, I like the bright colors of Heath's costume and makeup. The Joker is supposed to stick out like a sore thumb. But his hair isn't uniform. It's like he dipped it in green punch at a party or something. Also, he does look aged and a lipstick smear is no where near as frightening as a massive, natural-looking, double-row grin. To illustrate my point, the *ONLY* human being to grin naturally, showing both rows, is Louis Armstrong. But I digress. Actually, let me challenge you a little. You know that photoshopped image of Conrad Veidt from a while back? The one taken from "The Man Who Laughs", that 1928 silent movie? Now the reason that picture was so popular is because that's what the Joker was based off of. I hate to phrase it this way, but that's pretty much what he's supposed to look like. I know everyone's allowed to do their own interpretation, and that's fine. My problem is they strayed so damn far from that original model. Nicholson's Joker was very much flawed, but at least they put effort into his grin (gee, I seem to be repeating myself). I'm not trying to change anyone's mind so much as make people think. Finally, I find it hilarious the fan boys are criticizing us critics because they can't handle the criticism (boy, talk about repetition, I know).

The batsuit looks fine to me in the pictures from the film, the grey bits are gone for a start. I'm hardly suprised how many people are bitching though, a lot of posters on this site seem to think that it's clever to insult and swear all the time for no real reason.

Hey, this is a geek talkbalk site

    by Abominable Snowcone

So of COURSE we're gonna critique stuff like this. It's a friggin' superhero movie, and these are among the first images of Bats in his new get-up. Yes, I get how all the "business" makes the suit look more real akin to SWAT tactical gear. But I feel they need to lose some of the complexity and play to Bruce's need for movement, flexibility, and speed. You can have an armored suit without it looking like a goddamn carcrash. That's why I like the suit in Bats Returns the best.

    Batman begins

A film thats overly long, dull, badly acted & pretentious as is all of nolans overrated films. ITS A SUPERHERO FILM NOLAN! People love it because it supposed to be a gritty realistic interpretation. LOOK Its about a man who wears a bat outfit and fights crime with a silly voice? Get some perspective. Ironically Insomnia put me to sleep also. The look of joker is good. but im avoiding the film like the plague.

Heath Joker's Hair Looks Like Scarecrow's Hair

    by That 70s Venom

From the comic books. Did anyone else notice that? And especially if you guys remember the Scarecrow/Dr. Crane from Batman the Animated Series, that's sort of how his hair looked. His hair needs to look more like Joker hair not Scarecrow hair.

    zombot and realseveren

    by ewokstew

Zombot, good idea of a covering that hides a more complicated structure underneath but is revealed at some point. That makes total sense. Realseveren is right, also. Concept artists knowadays seem like they're trying to outdo each other. More detail, more spectacle, more color...I'd pit a simple Joe Johnston sketch from a Star Wars sketchbook against 90% of what I see in movie concept design today. Too much technique and flash and not enough solid design work. to all who don't want people to complain...that's why it's called a talkback. Negative or positive, that's what we do. Okay...I'm done venting.

    Looks cool to me ..

    by ckone

These are PROMO shots, with WHITE backgrounds...The Joker looks like the Joker...He looks sick and twisted, kind of like what I would imagine Tim Burtons Joker would look like, if Nicholson didn't make it his own. I LIKE the New Bat-suit cause it makes sense. It looks like modern day battle armor, not some muscle suit or some goffy tights. He looks like he could be hit by a car and get back up. That's cool. Too bad anyone can put a bullet through his face though...Again,these are lit up imiages in broad daylight people, Batman is about mood and night. These are going to kick ass on screen.

Love the Romero Joker meets the dirty mental patient. Sure to spawn a lotta waek knockoffs come Halloween '08...but what more coulda ask for? I like the fact that it wouldn't be real cartoony & looks more outta Grandpa's closet, cause that's what the character would really look like. That Joker looks so lame.

    by Gremlin517

Basically he looks like a balding Goth-wannabe. I am losing excitement for this movie with every image we receive. I wish they would have used either some computer manipulation or latex and really would have made him look like the Joker, instead, he just looks like some fan at the movie opening for the first movie. Oh well, I thought the first movie was actually pretty boring and don't have high hopes for this one at all.

    Batman's head is too BIG!

    by batzilla

I saw a vid of a new scene and it was AWFUL! Batmans suit that is. He looks like a fucking BOOBLE HEAD! Now that the cowl is skin tight on his neck (the pic here doesnt really show this) it makes he head look gigantic! And goofy as hell! Also, in the clip, Batman looks skinny. So, he is too skinny with a big, HUGE head and pencil neck! WHat the fuck is wrong with these people? Also, IMO, the joker is kind of weak. I don't like the lip stick look at ALL! Very disappointed.

wait til you see the suit in action

    by zooch

And how much more movement Bale will have in it. You'll all change your mind. I will give you the '89 suit though, still the coolest looking one.

  • Dec. 3, 2007, 8:55 p.m. CST

    B89 suit was crap

    by the_scream

Batman Returns was better than B89. The B89 suit was so incredibly baulky, they set up most scenes to have Keaton standing still like when he sucker punches the guy at the chemical factory. Not to mention the super thick mask that was attached to the main suit so Keaton had to turn his whole body everytime he wanted to look at something. The Batman Returns suit was an improvement because it was streamlined. The Batman Begins suit was the best so far partly because of the improved cowl. Also because the belt and bat symbol no longer looked like action figure accessories. I'll wait to see how the new suit looks on screen. But, for now, it looks like a combo of mesh and rubber. I can imagine Bats will now be able to move a lot faster. And unlike every other suit, it looks built for action not style. Let's not forget that Batman, in the comics, occasionally donned armor in battle (see The Dark Knight Returns), hence, the term "Dark Knight" in this film. Nolan has him wearing an armored suit for that very reason. Lastly, Ledger is miles better than Nicholson who was fat, bloated, bald and just plain silly, not insane like Ledger's Joker appears. This is easily going to be the best Batman film of all time. It isn't targeted at people who are mind-numbingly anal about every detail that they can't accept any changes, no matter how kick-ass. Nolan is a fantastic director and he doesn't have a bad film in him. Have some faith in the man.

  • Dec. 3, 2007, 10:44 p.m. CST

Wow theres a lot of hate for Nolans films here

    by Lovecraftfan

I dont get it. I really like his films including the vastly underrated The Prestige.

  • Dec. 3, 2007, 10:53 p.m. CST

    the_scream nailed it

    by red_five

thank you. You nailed exactly why the suit is the way it is. I think it's silly how these guys are whining about the Batsuit being so non-traditional. Newsflash: Skin-tight spandex doesn't look good on a body unless you're built like a circa 1975 Arnold S. An armored suit is the way to go. It looks like Nolan got the right blend of armor and 'fabric'. As for the Joker, I think Ledger looks pretty much dead on. People still don't get that this film is supposed to be grounded in realism. A Joker that fell into a vat of chemicals and has a permanent grin burned into his face is NOT REAL. Yeah, I know it's still a comic book movie, but Nolan and Co are bending the rules and that is OK by me.

  • Dec. 4, 2007, 12:01 a.m. CST

    Um, what red_five?

    by Frankenbastard

You're right, The Spiderman suit doesn't work at all they should have amped Peter Parker up in some kick ass armor. It’s that kind of lame ass thinking that’s killing these comic book adaptations. God, just give me half the budget of one of these movies and I’ll deliver the (armor-less and crappy grease paint-less) goods. It’s not impossible and it could work.

Oh, and I'll probably just download Dark Knight...

    by TheGhostWhoLurks

...based on the crummy look of these photos to date and the info out there about this film. This production has had MORE than enough time to convince me that they deserve my hard-earned money, only to finance more mediocre or sub-par crap for a franchise that should be easy as pie to get right. They did well with Batman Begins, but this Joker really looks like garbage and Ledger doesn't have an acting credit to his name to make me even START to think he can do the character justice.<p>The preview comes out soon, so I'll make my final decision then, but if they DON'T hit a home-run with it, I'm just gonna watch it for free at home.<p>Any other fans tired of being taken for granted and being handed cinematic slop time and again might want to do the same. Trust your instincts... everyone's "Spidey-sense" about this flick is going off for a REASON.

i love it how the fabric naysayers scream Adam West whenever that's brought up, folks they were intending to make it all campy in that 60s show, if they tried to make a legitimate fabric suit and put some effort into it, it would be the best one of all. use your imagination.

    Just gimme some hair

    by Iowa Snot Client

I'm kinda warming to the idea of the Joker's roots needing a touch-up. I guess the chemicals turned his hair green, but enough time has passed since that his natural color is growing back out. Expect pages of "goofs" on IMDB where fanboys track dye-job continuity.

  • Dec. 4, 2007, 8:33 a.m. CST

    fabric over armor

i'll say it again- it would look traditional, and any attackers wouldn't know to 'shoot or stab between the armor plates' like this new outfit screams for them to do. How tough would that make batman be to get stabbed or shot in what looks like a normal chest only to have your knife tip bend, and he keeps coming at you maybe by part 3 he realizes he shouldn't announce to thugs 'i have armor on'
