Saturday Brings A Moment Of Kandor With Brainiac 1, Clark, Violet And THE LEGION!!

Published at:  Dec 02, 2007 4:19:07 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Corey Burton, who gave voice to Brainiac in “Superman: The Animated Series,” returns to the role Saturday morning for “Message in a Bottle,” the new Kandor-themed episode of “Legion of Super-Heroes” premiering on Kids WB.

(Note the Fleisher-era mechanical man, still dwelling in Superman’s fortress!)

Brainiac’s the mean Coluan who shrank the capital of Krypton and stuck it under glass In Action Comics 242 (July 1958). Superman promised to restore it to normal size, but the episode summary suggests he never quite got around to it:

Superman and the Legion must venture into the legendary bottled city of Kandor in order to stop Imperiex, who seeks an advanced Kryptonian technology believed to be hidden inside. In order to help the Legion and clear his “family” name, Brainiac 5 must delve deep into his memory banks to access information from the original Brainiac.

Junior petite legionnaire Salu Digby (introduced in 1961’s Action 276), whose superpower is usually getting teensy, discovers that down amongst the Kandorians she’s less like Fay Wray and more like a hot, miniskirted Kong.

11 a.m. Saturday. The CW.

Ever since the first WB era Batman in the early '90's (yikes) to the stuff now this has been some of the best looking WWII era-style mixed with anime animation. The Max Fleisher stuff will always rule.

I rarely post, but yeah whenever I see something DC related that doesn't suck ass (Hellooooo..
Smallville) I have to chime in.
And yes, LEGION, like the awesome DC stuff (TimmToons?) before it, doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator. It's a show that's not out to sell toys, but to tell a story and gain viewers on the merit of that alone. Good stuff.

    by tristeele

This show just fucking ROCKS! First season was just ok. Second season is insane. I continually get amazed at some of the stuff they pull. These stories truly do have a epic feel this season. The best part is having an overall arc with a "big bad". The final fight last week with Kell-El & Imperiex Vs The space bounty hunter was just nasty. Truly anyone ripping on this series isnt giving it a shot. It blows Titans away and is nearly as good this season as JLU. Fuck the haters.

You and the others are right - Legion kicks ass - it's great fun to pick out Legionaires in the background we haven't seen in action yet, and the stories and characters are top notch - love the Superboy/man clone from the distant future! And Legion predates Titans, Pipple - get your facts straight, lad.

    WB should be ashamed

    by spank

Both The Batman and Legion are some of their best cartoons and they toss them after such HORRIBLE drivel. I was amazed that they added Titan reruns to their line-up, but still show those horrible "thumb wrestling" spots during their finest young adult/adult animated hour. I am a LLOONNGG time fan and reader of DC and it took me a few seasons to come around to the anime mutation style of Titans, but Legion (which refines SO much the Titan's animated style) is just incredible to watch. Folks who pass this show off, and yet enjoy comics, ought to be ashamed of themselves. WB/CW could tighten their continuity and up grade their writing slightly on this show and easily have it lead off ANY night of CW programming. It's way past time that fans recognized the quality of the Legion show and actually THANKED and encouraged the progtramming execs to give us more. The Legion and Batman shows (despite some infantile and way overly simplistic plotting at times)are PRIME examples of what "cartoons" are possible of as far as being aimed at a more adult, intelligent audience, and how WAY past time it is for some SERIOUS animation on prime time to be tried. I mean, outside of a few try-outs of the first WB Batman Animated the last SERIOUS cartoon series in network prime time was Jonny Quest. Think of a Dark Knight, or an animated series written on par with Watchmen in prime time- the audience has only grown for that kind of entertainment. Finally, I think it's way past due that AICN included a little "heads-up" for Legion- it's MUCH better than most folks think.

    by rbatty024

Legion of Superheroes, the second season is an improvement. Having a single villain for the entire season is a great idea and a nice little throwback to days of old. After the Dini/Timm DC Animated Universe it's kind of difficult to come to terms with the fact that these cartoons are geared more towards kids than adults, which wasn't true for B:TAS or Justice League Unlimited (superheroes were shacking up for chrissakes!). Although, THE Batman still kind of sucks. Not as bad as it did in its first season but still pretty damn bad.

Wow, nicely put. I've rented the Legion DVD on Netflix when it was available and thought it was a lot better than I thought it'd be.

I think part of me would have really loved to see Timm's version of the Legion but I can live with this one.

Btw, Brainiac comes off as so damn adorable. I want one.

    Not a kids' show?

    by magnum opus

Anyone claiming this is not a children's show must not be an adult. The simple-minded plot lines are clearly drawn up to keep those with the attention spans of 10-year-olds engaged. I'm not saying the program is without merit, but I don't see how an adult could actually watch more than one or two episodes.

    by chrth

The author pointed out that Kandor made no sense (among his top 5 things that make no sense in the Superman universe). Just because they're small doesn't mean they can't populate their own (hopefully devoid of large predators) planet around a yellow sun. I apologize for not remembering all the points of the argument.

I was surprised at the more 'adult' theme this season.

    by darth_nader

The first episode of the season killed off one of Triplicate Girl's sides, making her Duo-whatever. Then later in the season Lightning Lad had his arm blown off and replaced with mechanical one. Of course I thought he went into "Wow Cool!" mode too quickly. And they showed how his sister was 'killed' when they were kids. It's pretty obvious that Brainiac 1.0 is going to appear again.

I remember canceling my DVR for it but after catching bits and pieces. It's good brainless fun to watch the over the top fighting and zilch storytelling. They even kill people every once in awhile or rip their arms off replacing them with more powerful arms.

    Legion vs Farscape

    by tvguy returns

Legion is to americanime as Farscape was to post-DS9 Star Trek.

It is a radical step forward in quality of story-telling that won't be recognized as such until later because it is still being confused with other drek, like Teen Titans.

Also, Legion super-heros have always been the chosen realm of the real comic book geeks. Posers can't get past the standard canon of Batman-Superman.

    by hextexly

Seriously, this is the worst super-hero cartoon I have ever seen. There is no "adult" themes...only whinny kids. Same prob with THE BATMAN cartoon...waaaaay to much kids stuff. And if you think the shrink-y girl is "hot" you need to step outside and look at a real (3-d) woman. They are way better
